In this episode, Naziaty shares deep concerns about the future of architecture education, drawing from the Substack article and recent discussions on AI literacy. They critique the International Union of Architects’ vision, which shifts schools away from foundational manual drafting, observation, and problem-finding toward AI prompt crafting, systems logic, and positioning students as high-level directors of technology. UIA refers to a research article proposing an imitation-exploration-creation model for AI in design teaching, thus speculatively approach treat AI as a shortcut rather than a tool built on strong cognitive foundations.
We see architecture education has distinct aims from industry practice and risks producing graduates skilled only in prompting rather than resilient, critical, and creative architects grounded in core competencies. Learning requires friction and time; abandoning early manual skills and contextual design thinking for premature AI integration threatens the profession’s identity and value. We call on schools to resist these trends, preserve thoughtful teaching practices, and ensure students develop genuine architectural understanding before engaging advanced technologies.
