Well, hey there. Welcome to the Business of Ergonomics podcast. Here's something that might surprise you. The average office ergonomics assessment takes about 45 minutes to complete, and in those 45 minutes, you can generate anywhere between 300 to a thousand dollars in revenue, sometimes more. The single biggest source of callbacks, complaints, and failed recommendations in the office. Ergonomics assessment isn't the chair, it's not the desk, it's not the monitor height, it's the mouse, and if that surprises you, stick around. Because today I'm gonna share 15 facts about office ergonomics assessments that most practitioners have never heard, facts that could genuinely change the trajectory of your career and your income in 2026. In this podcast, I share what other healthcare professionals are already doing and being with ergonomics assessments and how to land those clients that you dream of. Without further ado, let's jump into this episode right now. So today we're doing something a little bit different. Instead of our usual deep dive format, I'm gonna rapid fire you with 15 facts, things I've learned from over a decade of doing assessments, training practitioners, and frankly watching people make the same avoidable mistakes over and over again. And I've gotta tell you, some of these facts lead directly into an announcement I'm really excited about. But more on that in a bit. Let's get started with this. Shall we fact, number one. There are only about 1200 board certified professional agonists in the entire United States. That's it. 1200 people. Now think about how many workplaces there are in the us, how many offices, how many people sitting at desks right now with wrist pain, neck pain, shoulder tension, The demand for qualified office ergonomics practitioners is absolutely enormous, and supply is tiny. If you are a healthcare professional, listening to this, whether you're a pt, ot, chiropractor, safety professional, kinesiologist, massage therapist, this is not a crowded market. This is a wide open field, and most companies are desperate for someone who actually knows what they're doing. most corporate ergonomics programs are run by people with zero formal training. I see this constantly. Companies assign ergonomic assessments to HR generalists, safety coordinators with no ergonomics background or worse the office furniture vendor. And look, I get it. These are well-meaning people. But they're often just following a generic checklist they downloaded from the internet. They adjust the chair, raise the monitor, and call it done. That's not an assessment. That's rearranging desk chairs. The real assessment starts when you understand the biomechanics tissue tolerance and how to match equipment to a specific person's condition. Fact number three. A single corporate contract for office ergonomics can be worth between $10,000 to $50,000 annually, and most practitioners don't know how to land one. A company with 500 employees hires you to do ongoing assessments. Maybe they pay you, let's say, $200 per assessment. You do 10 a month. That's $2,000 a month, or 24,000 a year from one client. And it scales fast. But most healthcare professionals never even pursue these contracts because they don't know the business model exists in the first place. They're stuck thinking, assessment by assessment, patient by patient. The real money is in reoccurring corporate relationships. Fact number four. Workers' compensation claims for computer related musculoskeletal disorders cost employers an average of 30,000 to $60,000 per claim. That's per claim, per person. Now, I want you to think about this from an employer's perspective for just a second. If they're paying you three or four or five. Or even more for a proactive assessment that prevents even one of those claims, the ROI, the return on investment is huge, right? This is the argument that you make to land contracts and provide value so that you're not a cost here, You're actually an insurance policy that has a return on investment that can help with productivity at the same time. So you're kind of like the cheapest risk management strategy that they'll ever buy. And when you can articulate that value proposition in a way that they really connect to, then there's tons of potential. And you can land your foot in those doors. Fact number five, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics Projects that workplace wellness and ergonomics related roles will grow 13% through 2028. That's faster than average. And here's the thing, the projection was made before the hybrid work revolution that we see and love everywhere really took hold. Now you've got millions of people working from makeshift home offices with terrible setups. the demand curve has steepened dramatically. Companies are now responsible for remote worker ergonomics in many jurisdictions. Okay, so I wanna pause here for just a minute because those first five facts all point to the same thing. All right, let's keep going because the next batch of facts is where things get really interesting. If you catch my drift. Fact number six, pointing device recommendations are the number one source of failed ergonomic interventions. I am not exaggerating here, y'all. When I survey practitioners about their biggest pain points, mouse selection comes up more than anything else, more than shares, more than sit stand desks, more than monitor placement. The mouse is where it all falls apart, and the reason it's simple. There are at least seven fundamentally different categories of pointing devices, each designed for different conditions, different hand sizes, and different use patterns. Fact number seven. There are seven distinct categories of pointing devices, and most practitioners can only name two or three. Okay? Let's go over these. You've got your standard mouse, the vertical mouse track balls, centrally located pointing devices. Touch pads, pen style devices and roller bars. Each one has a specific biomechanical purpose. Each one is better suited for certain conditions and worse for others. If all you know is standard mouse and vertical mouse, you are working with about 30% of your toolkit here, and that means that you're gonna get it wrong for a lot of people. Fact number eight. Recommending the wrong mouse can actually make a client's condition worse. This is the one that should scare you. And I'm not into scare tactics, but like straight up, this is a red flag moment. Let me give you an example. Someone comes in with the corbins and that's inflammation of the tendons on the thumb side of the wrist. A well-meaning practitioner recommends a track ball. That requires constant thumb movement. What happens? The condition gets worse. The client loses trust. The employer loses trust, and now you've created a bigger problem than the one that they hired you to solve. And that's the number one thing as ergonomics practitioners. this is why you need a clinical decision matrix, not just a product reference. Fact number nine. The adaption period for a new pointing device is typically two to four weeks, and most recommendations fail because nobody mentions this. Here's what happens. You recommend a vertical mouse. The client tries it for two days, Because it feels weird and goes back to their old mouse. They tell their employer the assessment didn't work. The problem isn't the recommendation. The problem is that nobody set expectations. No one told the client, Hey, listen, this is gonna feel awkward for like a week or two. Your productivity might dip slightly too. That's normal with this push through it. If you set that expectation in the first place, your success rate, skyrockets fact number 10, hand size measurement is a critical variable in device selection and almost nobody does it. So I'm talking about taking this actual measurement. hand length from the wrist crease to the fingertip. this measurement directly determines which device will be comfortable and which ones will cause strain. Why? Well, it's straightforward here, and you can probably guess what's gonna happen if a large handed person is using a small mouse, then that person will probably develop finger cramping If a small handed person is using an oversized vertical mouse, then they're gonna have grip fatigue. this measurement literally takes 30 seconds to measure, and it changes everything about your recommendation And most people skip it entirely. Fact, number 11. The most profitable ergonomics practitioners don't sell assessments. They sell ongoing retainer agreements. This is a business model shift that changes everything. Instead of selling one-off assessments at $300 a pop, you approach a company and say, let me be your ergonomics partner. handle all assessments, follow ups, consultations, and training for a flat monthly fee. Now you have a predictable reoccurring revenue. You're not chasing individual bookings anymore. You are a trusted advisor. And companies love this because it simplifies their vendor management and gives them a consistent point of contact. Fact number 12. Remote and hybrid workers are now covered under employee ergonomic obligations in many jurisdictions. This is huge and people don't realize it. In Canada, and many US states and across the EU, employers are increasingly on the hook for ergonomic safety of the remote workers. That means that every person working from their kitchen table technically needs an assessment. The addressable market just exploded, and most employers have zero infrastructure to handle this. They need you. Fact, number 13, a proper ergonomic assessment should take 30 to 60 minutes. If it takes less than 20, something is being skipped. I see practitioners rushing through assessments in 15 minutes. A valuable assessment includes a client interview, task description, measurements, equipment evaluation, a root cause analysis, changes being made immediately when appropriate. And a written report with specific recommendations. If you are doing this all in like 15 minutes, you're really doing a disservice for your client because you're not being thorough. It's impossible to be that thorough in 15 minutes, and if you're not being thorough, you're missing the things that actually matter, which often includes doing a deep dive into that pointing device. fact number 14. Most ergonomics training programs teach you about chairs and desks, but barely mention pointing devices. This is the gap. I've reviewed dozens of ergonomics, training programs, continuing education courses, and even university curriculum. The amount of time spent on pointing device selection is almost zero. Maybe like a slide, maybe two slides, maybe a passing mention. But when you look at the actual complaint data from workplaces, pointing devices are consistently in the top three sources of discomfort. there's a massive disconnect between what people are being taught and what they actually need to know in the field. Fact number 15, practitioners who. Can confidently recommend pointing devices, get more referrals than those who can't? This is something I've observed over and over in our community. When you nail a pointing device recommendation. So you solve someone's chronic wrist pain or thumb pain. By selecting exactly the right device and setting proper expectations. That person becomes your biggest fan. They tell their coworkers, they tell their manager, they tell HR One great recommendation can cascade into five, 10, or 15 more assessments from the same company. Your expertise with pointing devices literally becomes your best marketing tool. if even two or three of those surprised you, then I think you can see why this is such an incredible opportunity. The market is wide open, the demand is massive, and the one skill that separates. practitioners who thrive from the ones who struggle is their ability to get the details right, especially the details that everyone else is getting wrong.
