5 Minute Friday: Focus Beats FOMO
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Feeling “behind” can feel heavy, like everyone else found the fast lane while you hit every red light. We take that story apart and rebuild it from the ground up: what if the sensation of lagging isn’t about time at all, but about attention? When our focus fractures across comparison, milestones, and constant noise, progress stalls. When we reclaim attention—even for a few minutes—the path forward clears and momentum returns.
We trace the way early-life benchmarks morph into adult scorecards—schools, jobs, travel, houses, cars—and how those social markers keep us chasing validation instead of traction. Then we get practical. We walk through a simple five to ten minute focus ritual designed to cut through distraction, reduce anxiety, and produce a tangible win today. Whether you choose a quiet walk to reset your mind, write a few gratitude notes to shift your mood, or sketch the contours of your dream life to restore direction, the goal is the same: one clear action that actually moves the needle.
This conversation centers on self-leadership: choosing what matters, saying no to what doesn’t, and honoring the limits of your attention. We share how short focus sprints build the muscle for deeper work, why comparison fades when progress becomes personal, and how small, repeatable actions compound into meaningful change. The takeaway is simple and liberating—you’re not behind; you’re overloaded. Narrow the inputs, choose one task, and create proof of progress you can feel.
Try the 5–10 minute challenge today and tell us what you did and what changed. If this helped, follow the show, share it with a friend who needs a reset, and leave a review to help more people reclaim their focus.

Hey, it's Jordan Edwards here and it's five minute Friday. And what we're going to be discussing about today is that you're not behind. You're just distracted. So when we think back in my life and I start to think about these moments of like, what is truly behind? Originally in our life growing up, it was are we in the same grade as the people or are we ahead? And then it's like, what middle school are we going to? What high school? And then it was what type of college are you going to? And that was always the ahead nature, the behind nature. Then it was, as you get into your later 20s, it becomes these social constructs of what kind of job do you have? Where have you traveled to? How big's your house? What kind of car do you drive? And we always have these inclinations of feeling behind. But the truth is, feeling behind usually means attention is scattered. It means that we're not focused on the right things. Because our focus is going to be hustle every single day. The hardest thing in our lives right now is for us to focus. There's so many distractions. There's so many things calling for us. There's so many things stopping us from reaching the true life that we want. So to reclaim our focus is an act of self-leadership. Why? Because what is this really going to do for us? It's saying no to the things that don't feed you. It's saying no to the things that think the things that don't help you. So I want you to start to realize and reclaim this focus for your life and take over this focus in your life because there's too many of us that are just distracted. We're just moving on from one thing to another thing to another thing. So I want you at the end of this podcast to pause, put your phone down, set a five, 10-minute timer, and do work that is meaningful to you. Do something that is actually going to move the needle forward for you. Whether that's going on a walk by yourself, whether that's writing gratitude notes, whether that's writing out your dream life, whatever it is, I want you to take that action. I want you to put the phone down and truly focus. Use the skill, build the muscle, and realize that you're not behind. You're exactly where you're supposed to be. We only feel that inclination to behind when we're distracted. So when we focus, we start to realize that we are in the right place and we are doing the things that we're supposed to be doing. So I tell you this because I really want you to make a true difference for you. And I want you to shoot me an email at jordan at edwards.consulting and tell me what you ended up doing with your five or 10 minutes. Tell me what you did with this focus time and tell me the impact it had on you because I know it did have an impact. So I want to thank you and I hope you have an incredible Friday, and we'll talk very soon. Have a great Friday. Thank you.
