EP#47: Preparing Athletically for the Rigours of College Sport with Stewart Briggs, former US College Strength & Conditioning Guru and Founder of Acceleration Australia
In this episode, our director Chris Bates sits down with Stewart Briggs, who started Acceleration Australia in 2000, after working as a strength and conditioning coach across NCAA D1 as well as the NBA. Tune in to gain a WEALTH of knowledge from Stewart, an industry leading expert who understands the nuances of the US approach to strength, conditioning and general athletic training and how to best prepare your body to hit the ground running once you arrive on your college campus.
Stewart says, "the little bit of the issue with the Australian focus is we're probably not strength focused enough or not preparing the body for the level of contact or the athleticism that they're going to experience in America. So we as Australians, need to sometimes get a little bit more strength focused and size focused, depending on the sport and what the athlete's goals are."
When speaking about his Acceleration Australia athletes getting ready to head to start their US college journey, Stewart states: "...the other one thing is prepare for the differences. So, when we work with athletes leading into college, I know what they're going to experience. So therefore we lift them somewhat similar to how they're going to lift in college, even though we'll still have the individualisation and so forth, but we're going to lift them the way they expect to lift when they get there. That way they're also prepared physically..."
