Watson Saga Ends, Baker gets the nod, Good news / bad news for Dallas, Brady is back
Transcript

The axis of football is back for another week of exciting headlines to talk about we're one week closer to the start of the season. Char I'm looking my chops, but until that moment look some updates on the Dashaun Watson front. He's come to his settlement with the league. We'll talk about the details there and what that means. Some interesting themes with star quarterback, switching teams and facing their former team out of the. What did an NFL hall of fame legend have to say about how the nine are handling. Jimmy G will go there. Brady what's going on with the goat. Is he back? Is he not? What's the status, some updates on that front and look some good and bad news for the Cowboys char and I will weigh in an injury, but a potential find in preseason for them, all that and more up. Char let's kick this thing off with you know, what is it? The the, the 38th time we've talked about the Sean Watson. This is it. This is the final settlement. It's come to a head Deshaun Watson suspension. Now officially 11 games. Of course, the news drops as soon as we've basically published our, our pod last week. So we haven't talked about it for a week, but it's, it's 11 games. It's said it's done. Any thoughts here, char it was gonna be maybe a, a year indefinite from the league's perspective. You know, Sue Robinson said six, it landed on 11. What are your thoughts now? That it's six to 11 games and not that full year suspension that Goodell was seeking out the gate. Remember, last time you spoke about this last week, I said it stink. And I, I said, no matter what would've happened, I felt that the league was going to appeal it. And it, it just, it just something stink about it. Do you recall that? Absolutely. I think we, I think we both agreed. Regardless, just for the sake of the court of public opinion, the league was gonna appeal it one way or the other. It, it stinks. It stinks even more. It it's like, you know, you, you're cleaning out your storage space and, and, or your garage or your attic, whatever. And you're like, God, there's a ran that smell. I can smell it somewhere. Like, you know, it's fainted first, but then when you close in on it and you're like, there's a big, giant rat, some. And you found a dead body and, and it totally stinks. This totally stinks because what are the odds by the way? What, what, you know, that was a very specific example. Is that, is that from experience or No. No. But, but you know, I've back in the day, I, I had worked in construction one of my summer jobs in college driving big trucks and stuff like that. And, you know, you would find cats. Stuff like that in old pipes and, and so on and so forth. So anyway, okay. Got it. Got it. Makes sense. Anyway, this, this, this totally stinks. This totally stinks. It makes me believe that from day one, they knew it was gonna be 11, you know, 12, 12 games with the, with the BI week and, and him coming back against his old team. I mean, come on. What are the, what are the odds of that? Well, and, and, and they've also shown the propensity of doing that with, with with baker Mayfield and with Russell Westbrook. So come. It, it seems to high heaven. Yeah. Yeah. What, what, what shark's talking about is, is, is a broader theme. That it's very interesting, right? You've got, you know, Deshaun Watson, Russell Wilson baker Mayfield. All switch teams. And now with this 11 game suspension for Dashaun Watson, what this means is that the first game for all three of those quarterbacks will be against their former team. So we'll, we'll get into that more you know, final thing that I'll say about the Dashaun Watson situation. Number one I'm, I'm glad that it's over. I, I wanna stop talking about it. There's finally clarity here. At least the Browns we'll get to see him play this year. You know, he's still. Maintains complete innocence. Hasn't shown a ton of remorse. I get from a legal standpoint, as we talked about char logically. That makes sense. I hope at some point when the dust settles and, and maybe this, I think there's one last settlement that that's being worked on right now, perhaps when, when that's in the books. Deshaun at some point just comes clean and, and shows some remorse. Again, I know that there was no assault involved in all of that, but obviously there's some concerning behavior here regardless. And so hopefully there's a bit of remorse shown there from his side is, is I think would, would bring ultimate closure to this at least from a, a public opinion standpoint. But look, we're, it's done. Behind it moving forward, he's gonna face the Texans and his first game back. And by the way that game is in Houston. So, I mean, look, the, the, the one game that Daan started in preseason, I mean, there was, there was let's say to say there was profanities being uttered from the fans would be an understatement and that was a preseason game. What do you think it's gonna be like in Houston? And his first game back. I mean, I'm sure the signs are gonna be creative. I'm sure the comments are, I mean, there's gonna be trash talk to the high heaven, in my opinion, for that one, it's gonna be one of those games where the cameraman's gotta be careful to, what's not accidentally pan to an inappropriate sign or something. Right. Because I I'm guessing those fans are gonna come out in full force. Your thoughts on Deshaun's first game being at Houston. Well, it it's you know, it's, it's easy for me to quickly jump on the back of NFL and say, this was all an optics thing. Shame on you NFL for doing this, but then I'm further thought I'm like, you know, This is all to justify all those freaking Karens out there that have tried to change the culture of the NFL into a normal civil society, which we know it's not as a bunch of animals running around in the jungle. It's it wasn't enough that they made grown men wear. You know, for a month or a game out of the year, so, you know, I, I guess I can't blame Roger for doing this, you know, phenomenal, phenomenal Rouse to get the chance to finally shut up. Well, okay. To be fair. Sure. The you talking number one? I mean, obviously. Deshaun Watson did do things. He, he shouldn't have done. Right. And so that's why I was saying, I hope he special his remorse eventually, you know, and to be, we D what he did, what he did, assuming assuming 24 people weren't all lying, but, but you know what, though? There wasn't a single, there was a huge investigation done that there wasn't a single criminal charge brought up against him. Right. But I think we both agreed. He's probably at least a major pro he's a Perver. Yeah. Right. And so, and he's stupid, I think. Well, I think when you're an NFL quarterback, a high profile player like that, a face, a face of a multi-billion dollar corporation, you have a responsibility on your self image, I think. Yeah. Yeah. On that. There's something there. the pink thing. I mean you're talking about, I think October being breast cancer awareness. That's optional, man. No one makes the players wear pink. Look, Theo Williams mother. He lost his mother to breast cancer. He wanted to wear. And I remember actually my mom, my mom almost died from breast cancer. I'm I'm not sitting here fleeing breast cancer, but my mom went through two sets of chemotherapy in, in 2007 and then she got a double mastectomy. So I understand breast I'm fully aware of. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. Hear that. I I'm glad she's doing better. Yeah. And, and you know what? I never once made my football kids wear pinch. No, one's forced to wear pink. No, they're not making a more pink if they don't. OK. Like I was personally affected by breast cancer. I thought I was gonna lose my. So I'm not sitting here making fun of breast cancer, It's ridiculous. It's just like, it's, you know what happens it and, and it's usually the upper middle class is they don't have, they don't have anything important going on. They start watching a football game and they, the city's giant. Animals and yes, animals, animals running around trying to take each other's heads off and like, oh, let see. I think there's injustice being done there. Let world of you I'm so sick this bullshit. So the, that this is, this is now concluded, at least for now. Thank God. I'm so sick and tired of it. Deshaun Watson is guilty of being stupid. You're a goddamn starting quarterback out of an NFL franchise. You're an MVP type quarterback. You have to resort to getting massage therapist from Instagram to get women me at age 52, let alone a young man at the peak of his. With millions of dollars. So he's stupid, right? That's what Deshaun wa let's, let's get real here. People, the Sean Watson is, is guilty of being stupid. That's what it is. Okay. Let's not forget about it. The Sean Watson needs to get on stage and said, I am so sorry to my family, to my loved ones, to the people, my fans, that support me, the organization that I represented for being stupid, but he hasn't even, he hasn't even done that. He that's the point. He, he hasn't even done that because, because you know what the legal system, unfortunately, and anything you say can, can, and will be used against. So let's, let's, let's hold our horses and you know what, maybe he needs to go on Twitter or, or whatever, just say I made wrong choices. Well, what about, what about, what about there were women he actually negatively impacted. I think he owes it to them first. Do not fall for the pre of the white 45 year olds. Char. Alright, don't fall. Pray for it. True rush. First of all what did you have this morning? Cause I, I want some of that you're, you're clearly on a, on a tear. I'm just because you know what it really set me off and I was about to go on, on, and I started thinking about I'm like, I've done this same exact thing. I would've came out cause you know what? This is, Roger. Good. You know what? Kudos to Roger goodo. I was gonna start off by saying, you know what? This is bullshit. Now I understand. You earned your$40 million a year because you know what? You got a army of 30 million Karens out there that are relentless. We should send those Karens to Ukraine. Putin would surrender immediately. Well, I don't even know how to respond to that. Let's just leave it at that and say we're thankful. We can move forward. It's finished. Hopefully the next time we talk about the Sean Watson it's in relation to football games and look, he's, he's playing the Texans in that, in that, in that first game, that'll be intriguing. And again, like I said, I'm interested to see what those fans do in Houston week. The other side of that charge, you alluded to baker Mayfield. Now a fishing named to starter in Carolina. Sorry, man. Your boy, Sam Arnold looks like he's going to be number two for now. My prediction was. Whoever's name is starter. I don't see them holding onto the job necessarily, so I could see a reality. I think Sam, be's probably gonna get some playing time at some point, but at least outta the gate, it's gonna be Bick, which means he'll be up against the Browns week one, which of course will be now without Deshaun Watson. We know this for that he'll be Jacobi Perce, seemingly those first 11 games and then Russell Wilson week one also against Seattle. Now the difference between this situation char and Dashaun is Deshaun's first game. Is at Houston, whereas baker and Russell are going to be playing host to their former team. So perhaps not quite as hostile, but nevertheless, maybe a bit of added pressure, a bit of added meeting. That's your first game with this new team is against your old team. Any, any thoughts on those? Yeah, my, my first thought is I'm not gonna let you get away with this. I'm not gonna let you get away with this. You're talking about what did I do? Your boy, Sam, you like Sam, Donald. He's a, he's a, he's a, he's a SoCal guy. He's an SC guy. You like Sam? Darn. All I said about Sam Donald is that he's a first round draft capital. And I thought, I thought that because of Adam Case, there was a chance that his talents were being utilized properly and that instead of wasting, instead of wasting a top draft choice on an unproven questioned talent, which we see right now, we see right now, how great is Zach Wilson? Okay. It, it seems like Zach, Wilson's going through the same situation that Sam Donald was going through. All I said that the jet would've been better. Going with a generational tackle, like pane se and giving Sam darn one more year. That's all I will say. Then when Sam got traded to to Carolina, I was like, fantastic. A second round draft choice for a draft. The potential. Yeah, potential. Fantastic. Now. Sam to me. Now, this show Sam Donald is finished as a starting quarterback in the NFL. The fact that he couldn't beat baker Mayfield. Look, I, I have respect for baker Mayfield. He's got a lot of qualities in a quarterback that I like. He's feisty. He's FIY, he's emotional. He's a winner, right? He has limited. He has a lit and here here's the thing. Who's more, who's got a better arm strength who who's a better quarterback process. May I think every intangible. Sam darn has it, you mean every tangible, every tangible, the intangible is what he doesn't have. Excuse me. The, the, in terms of like, Right. Moral strength. Those are tangible things that you can measure. Yeah. Every measurable Sam, Donald has AB absolutely. But baker the fact that, okay, and here's the thing, Sam, Donald's been with that offense for a year. Now this was his team. This was his job to lose, even though it's open competition. I guarantee the first time they went out and practiced Sam Donald was with the first group because it, with the nature of things. Right, right. Of course. OK. Of course. So the fact that Sam Donald lost. To a quarterback who is less talented than he is, who's smaller than he is. Okay. In his own system, in his own offense, in his own home, in his own backyard, Sam Donald's done. Yeah. Either, either because he never had it either because he never had that intangible that you can't measure the, the, the, the greatest asset of Tom Brady. Or, or he just, he's just mentally, emotionally screwed, which, which, listen, listen, I, I, I understand that can happen. But having said that I'm not gonna let you get away with things that all I said is, is that you should always go through all your options before you listen, sir, I think you owe to our listeners just to answer this question, who is more your boy, Sam darn, or, or or drew lock that's. That's what that, that's what we wanna know who is more your boy. Drew log. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Fair. No, because I actually like drew lock's demeanor on the field. I don't like Sam Donald's demeanor on the field. Okay. Gotcha. All right. Well in any case anyway, so let, let's get back to the point. What was the question that I let's get back to the point? Oh yeah. Like just initial thoughts. Like, I guess let's talk about baker and Russell. Who is under more pressure you think going into their first game against their former team in, in, in week one at that, right? Like who's, who's under more pressure baker baker, because baker Mayfield can be benched Russell. Wilson's never gonna bench. Number one. Number two, Russell Wilson is a. He's he's in a stack team. And I think, I think, I think that might be a blowout by the way. I don't know what the, I dunno what the spread in that game is. If it's, you know, I'm not a, and I'm not a betting man, but if it's more than, I mean, if it's less than like four points, I think it's a no brainer. Oh AB absolutely. It should. It should be, it should be like a 10 point 10, 12 point spread, but it's not gonna that's that's I think that's too rich for week one. I don't know, but that seems like a, like a, like a too large of a gap for, for week one game. Here's the thing. If, if, if Russell Wilson goes out there and stinks it up, People are gonna say, okay, you know, they got him, Pete Carol knew him. They're gonna give oh, was an emotional thing for Russell. He's not nowhere. He's not losing his job. Baker Mayfield could actually lose his job if he goes and takes a shit out there. Yeah. So at the end of the day, at the end of the day, the pressure of losing your job is the greatest thing that, that you can have in the NFL. I think there's a greater compounding pressure in general in Carolina, because Matt rules in the is in the hot seat. There's no secret. Absolutely. Matt rule has to perform this year. Maybe not playoff he's, he's gotta finish above 500, right? Or like, I think they have a good chance of doing that. If baker plays like baker can with the running game. And, and, and I think about the division. It's it's, it's gonna be Tampa and new Orleans at the top of that division. So I guess there's a reality where they could finish third in the division and still finish above 500. Yeah, I guess I don't know how likely that is. Well, well, we already talked about the, the Tampa's gotten worse. Oh, for sure. But Tampa's gotten worse that doesn't, that doesn't really matter. I mean that right. And, and, and we know we've seen James Winston throw away games. That's true. No, we, we saw Jim Winston throw away. How, how many pick sixes did he have? Was it three years ago when he was with Tampa? Yeah, he had, he also had, he was the first quarterback, 30, 30, 30 touchdowns in 30 years. And he was one of the most poetic things I've ever seen, not just in football, in sports, in my life that his final. Throw in the final regular season game was a pick six in overtime that got him to that 30th interception. I mean, what a way to get for the 30 and 30 regular, right? That was unbelievable. I'll never forget that. I could not believe that's the walk off play for that season for James. Unbelievable. That sealed him with Bruce airs. Remember that field, but it would take a massive regression from how talented new Orleans and Tampa bay still are in comparison to the division and a massive progress. From Carolina at the same time. I, I just, I don't see it. I think Matt rule's in the hot seat for a reason. And I wouldn't be surprised, like I said before, if Dar at some point he is back back in the driver's seat this season, but, but who knows, you know, but Baker's got that great. He's got those intangibles, as we said, maybe he hangs onto the job, but in any case, sure. I can't remember a time where we saw this many quarterbacks on new teams. Have their first game be against their former team. I, I wish we had a research department here are the axis football passes off to our intern or something. But I, I don't know that it's ever happened before. Can you think? No, not, no, not, not, not all at once. Not all at once. I mean especially, I mean, especially under first games, I, I don't recall. I mean, we know Brady went back to New England. But that was like, you know, was like week, week eight or something. Right. Right. And, and so, so yeah, I, I, I've never seen it like this before. It's fantastic. And look, the NFL is a, is a fricking billion dollar multi-billion dollar entertainment. So, it's it makes sense. And to your point, I mean, is it crazy to say obviously the schedule makers perhaps. The the week one games for baker, excuse me for, well, actually, no, that that's, that's actually a coincidence because I was thinking maybe they did it on purpose, but no baker was just named the starter. He baker was still brown when the schedule came out. So this just kind. It just kind of worked out right. Just, just kind of fell. And then the 11 game suspension from Shaun Watson just happened. But you know, that, that one is that is that 11, because game 12 was against, was against Houston. I don't know. But it's, it makes for great stories, right? Yeah. So, no, it's come on. It's and, and, and the NFL With, with Russell Wilson, you know, you know, that's specific. So what, what could, what could have happened is that the look, the schedules are said that the formula first schedules are said, but I know in each schedule there's, there are games out there that you can fudge that you can move around. This guy plays this just, just an off, you know, of, of schedule game. But but certainly you know, the question is brought up. The NFL knew what they were gonna get with the suspension. They knew what they were gonna get. And, you know, they, they just play the Karens and I freaking love it. I've I, I like, I've never had an emotional shift like this before, where I went from calling it that it stinks and I was pissed off about it. I love it because I realized why they had to do it. So yeah, I mean, going back to the Carolina and, and baker though, I don't see him, honestly, if they put baker underneath the. And do not force him into a situation where he's in the shotgun and you run the play action past your feet. McCaffrey, you run the play action. You hit those quick receivers. You know, the, the is it DJ Moore? Yeah. DJ Moore. Yeah. Moore. Yeah. And I'm interested in seeing what, what, what happens with Robbie? Cause here's the thing. What people don't understand. People think that because bakers small, he doesn't have a strong arm. Baker has a. Baker baker has a cannon. So I wanna see if is gonna be a resurgence with Robbie Anderson, you know? So it it'll be interesting to see. I think, I think Carolina is quietly gonna be a lot better than people giving credit. We'll see. We'll see. I mean, Matt, Matt rule had the success at Baylor. Hasn't quite translated over to the pros yet, maybe baker and a healthy McCaffery gives him the opportunity to turn things. While he was in the hot seat. And I think, yeah, going back to just Russell, going into the Seahawks, it's, it's less of a story. I think it's gonna be, it's gonna be, I don't wanna say an easy win, but I think he's gonna, he's gonna show why he left town for greener pastors in Denver. Oh, Seattle. Seattle is, I mean, it's, it's it's this is the, this is the, I would say this season for Seattle. Is exactly the textbook definition of what a rebuilding year looks like. And I think we're gonna see that from that team this, this season, it's just there's. Yeah, absolutely. And, and honestly, Kru is they don't have a quarterback. They have a, they have couple of good runners. You know, young runners, but they don't have the offensive line. They don't have a line, they don't have a quarterback. They, they don't have much on defense. And, and, and here's the thing. So, you know, you have Juno Smith starting out there, their best chance for any kind of a success is if drew lock, figures it out because drew lock has the, I mean, drew lock, drew lock was supposed to start game to the preseason. Yeah. A couple hours after it was announced, he tested positive for COVID. So unfortunately Geno had to play and Geno. I mean, he stunk up the joint. He was awful. He was, he was, he won against the, was it the, who did they play? The jets second team defense. And they couldn't move the ball against the second teamers. Yeah. So that is, that is not a good sign. I think maybe still by default drew lock will be the starter there, but in any case, our. Let's move to some unfortunate news that is a little more near and dear to my heart. And that is yesterday. Cowboys left tackle all star pro bowler tore his left hamstring on a seemingly routine running play. He was going to engage Laton VRE and just pulled up and went to the ground. And initially. Reports seem positive. They said as ACL was intact, he left the training facility without a limp and it seemed fine. But Hey, the ACL was intact. Unfortunately, the hamstering is not, they're saying at the earliest he's coming back in December. I think you can pretty much say at this point he's done for the season. You mentioned in the production meeting show, if the Cowboys aren't winning or, or anything, you know, why even bring him back? We'll see. But listen from one left tackle to another, I'm sure. You know, the, the, the, the loss, this is for Dallas. Oh, it, especially when they lost Collins to the agency. And this is why you don't trade like Lyle Collins. Why? Yeah. Why? Yeah. It's it's and now bro gets better. And we did draft the kid, Tyler Smith in the first round this year, he's actually shown some nice raw ability, but, but I thought he's a guard. I thought he's not a tackle. No, they moved him to tackle. He's a tackle. Ooh. But, but who was a guard college? I think they're gonna move in tackle. Yeah. Okay. I not too often. And again, this is not being beat, not me being the snobby type. No, but you're right. That transition. General a lot easier for now rookie coming in. I don't know. I mean, I it's, people are speculating this, right. Obviously this news just dropped, so we don't know what online you got guys like Eric Fisher, former first, first overall pick of the chief. He could, he could be a good, yeah. Put him free agent, right? Like they might, they might do that. The Cowboys literally hate free agency. So, you know, they don't really go to FRA agency unless they absolutely have to, this might be the absolutely have to situation, but who's out there. I, I think Eric Fisher's out there. I couldn't really, there's a couple other, but I think Eric Fisher cause besides him who who's really out there. Yeah. I mean, look, I mean, if you're any good at this point, you're gonna be on a team. Right? My, my phone's are in kuru. Oh, Hey. It's no, I'm kidding. but no. Hey, Hey char, we're wondering if you can come down to Dallas here and uh, yeah. Come try out for us. Yeah, exactly. With all these, with all the metal pins and, and plates in your pelvis and, and, and the five, a cable that's holding your shoulders together. Yeah. That's, that's fantastic. And that, that might be better than than a rookie guard. Who, who knows. Here's the thing to, to this day? My claim to fame is that I'm the. Out of the phenomenal offensive tackles that we've had play from Nevada in the NFL. And two of them right now are Joel Baton. One of the best offensive lineman in the NFL and Austin Corbit. Who's the solid, solid ion who go into Carolina, protecting baker Mayfield, which is you know, which he started off in Cleveland. So he's familiar with baker, but my claim to fame is that I'm the only guy that. Been a starting left tackle that played left tackle in Nevada and done that. So the, the it's much easier to take a tackle play guard because your space that you're responsible for is much smaller, is much more condensed, left tackle out there. You it's you are, it, it is, it is heart wrenching, how much responsibility a left tackle has. And, and and it, I would highly recommend for them to go get Eric fishing, highly recommend. It's just, you know, he's not a stud, but he's at least he's, he's been there. Right. What's you know, you know what what's, what's the cap situation. For, for the Cowboys, they're under the cap. They're under the cap. Okay. They should go and get that pro bowl left tackle from he's still in his mid thirties. Used to be a pro bowl with, with Indianapolis Costanzo was a Costanzo. Oh yeah, yeah. Frank that retired. He, you know, he's only couple years moved from it. You're assuming HES gonna want. Now look you remember though, remember last year. And the Cowboys. They also have your boy, the guy you like last year, Terrence Steele. He stepped in admirably and, and filled in it. Right? Tackle. He's gonna know how need to be the full-time starter. I dunno if they'd swing him over from right to left. But again, All very experimental. I feel like when you're talking about left tackle, you want an adult in the building, right. But look, I think guys like Jason Peters, Eric Fisher, there's some guys that are out there that the council, like I told you. Right. But I think he's got, he's gotta wanna play though. Well, right, right. Jason Peters, they have to beg him to to come in and play. And, and he's look, he's 41 42. And, and last time I saw him, honestly, God, he did not have an athlete's body. He didn't like, I'm like, oh my God, this, like, how's, how's the studio by the way. How about, how about Nate's solder? He's another free. He's he's long time starter went to the giants place. That would be a good guy to bring in because he's capable and he's competent. You know, the giants put him at right tackle, which is a mistake. Nate, solder's a port typical guy. Who's not gonna open up running lanes for you and you can still depend on him to do a decent enough job pass blocking. Right. So that's, that's a guy to do it with, or, you know what trade, if, if, if my look Mike McCarthy, if he doesn't wanna playoff game, he's gone. I yeah. Agreed. I mean, he has to get me to play out first, but yeah, let alone win one. He's his mom, you know, so, so that's that, that's tough at the same time, char the Cowboys have, have been without Tyran Smith for the past few years. Now, the thing is though you had Terrence steel step up and play. Well, you also had Layo Collins, so. You know, without wild Collins, this kid, Josh balls in there, it's a bit of a crapshoot. Are they gonna put Tyler Smith, the rookie, the raw rookie guard? Are they gonna move him there? Are they gonna bring in competition via, you know, Jason Peters, Eric Fisher. Brian Balog is out there as well. Nate soldiers out there, like, I, I don't know. You need to bring, you need to bring in somebody because when I saw Terrence steel play, he was playing right. Tackles. If, if I recall, yeah, you're right. You're right. Okay. Listen, and it drives you mad. I, I freaking heard. Some announcers calling, oh, what's the big deal. What's the difference between left tackle and right tackle. And I swear to God, if I could have jumped through the freaking radio well, and that wasn't even radio through my computer, the disrespect, I wanna rang these, the disrespect. It's not even that. I mean, I've played it. I, I would, I mean, how many different guys. Have started lots of games on both sides and, and, and, and I remember being shifted from left tackle to right tackle and right. Tackled to left and, and it's a completely different position. It it's like, come on. So yeah, it's look, they need to, maybe if, if Mike McCarthy has enough pool to say, look. I know you're gonna, I know if I don't want playoff game I'm gone. Got here, go, go get me an Orlando brown Jr. Via trade, you know, who who's not happy in Kansas city or, or, or do do something, but then again, this might be Jerry's way of bringing, you know, having an excuse to bring in bringing Sean Payton. Right, right. Exactly. And that, that would make co still happy. So in, in, in the long run, it would be a good. Shark let's let's shift to some better news. I gotta say, you know, preseason doesn't carry a lot of meeting, but we do know there's guys in the fringe that often make the team because of how they play on special teams. And it looks like the Cowboys might have found a guy to provide a spark for them on special teams. And that would be kick returner wide receiver Kavante Turpin. Now this kid went to TCU, flashed a lot of ability. Went undrafted bounced around to a bunch of semi-pro leagues pro leagues. Most recently he was in the USFL was the MVP of the USFL played phenomenally while there was returner Cowboys, give him a chance to come to camp. And what does he do in his first game? Returns, a kickoff and a touchdown back in the same half, excuse me, returns a kickoff and a punt return for a touchdown in the same half. I believe it was 90. And 81 yards, respectively, the kid looks electric. We were watching the highlights before the episode show. I know it's preseason, but it looks like this kid is mans up the team and the Cowboys. I can't remember the last time the Cowboys really had a difference maker after return man's spot. They've had to put like CD lamb in there. They put Des Brian in there a little bit. They had guys, but just a, a pure returner who that was his craft. I can't remember the last time there was a good one. I think a personal Walker, maybe back in the day. The kid looked interesting, didn't he? No, he, he was great. And, and you know what, I, if it wasn't for the fact that this is such a great story with with this kid that has that has gone through the, you know, Basically having to play into minors and coming up, which obviously has a special place in my heart because I, I took the same route. I, I would've called you out on the facts, you know, asking me if this is a Cowboys podcast or not, but, but cause you can't help yourself. It it's. It's electrifying, man. You don't see when's the last time you saw a guy run, two returns back and a half of half of football. I mean, it's agree. Agreed, agreed. Fair. Fair enough. But, but no, it's, it's amazing. And and you know, the kickoff return, the blocking was phenomenal. And the best thing that I can say about the kickoff return was that. There's a thing to be said about runners, putting their, like the way they're running and the lanes that they're taking, putting their blockers in a better situation to block by forcing defenders to go in one direction or another. But that punt return that punt return was, was legendary. So it's it's it was a phenomenal, phenomenal punt. And, you know, pairing it off with the fact that it's, you know, he's trying to make the team, he just made the team. He ju he just made the team. He's gonna be on the team. He's gonna be the, he's gonna be the return man for the for the Cowboys and, and what a great story. Great story, and look. And the other part of it too, is man charger, special teams. I mean, geez, Louise, these guys that seems like they can never, as, as long as I've not as long as I'm watching, but, but I feel like since the early two thousands, the charges have had this problem. Which is bad, special teams play, whether San Diego or LA, no matter who the coach is, it's just been an issue for them. And I'm sure, you know, after allowing two returns in one half football, whoever was in the field for those might not be, you know, might be looking for a new job pretty soon too. Listen, here's the thing. This is, this is why analytics. I mean, you know, you have, you have a poor, typical coach that's analytics based. We saw how he lost two, three games last year because of analytics. And how about the most important one when the playoffs were on the line? Exactly, exactly. And, and, and, and the problem we have with analytics is that it's such a dynamic situation with, with special teams that you really don't have. It's so situationally based that you really can't give numbers. And, and you can't really, you can't really say, oh, analytics say, do this, do that. It it's special teams is, is more like a game of soccer. It's more of a food situation. You, so that that's really the only part of, of the game. That's still very similar to rugby. Where it's just, it's just, you're running, you're running and you're going until you're not. So, and, and this is a problem with analytics coaches. They, they don't pay attention to special teams. They forget that it's one third of the fricking game that's and, and, and, and, and that, this is why, you know, when you have coaches that say, oh, I'm not gonna kick field goals. I'm gonna go for it. Cause my offense needs to be on the line because they don't put enough emphasis on special teams. Oh, my best. I'm gonna let my best players. Do their thing. Well, you know what? Special teams is very important. So I, I look, I picked the charges to win the division. Honestly, God, if they don't win the division this year, that coach needs to go. I don't think I, I mean, I don't think they would, but you might be. No, they're not because, because you know, it's only year two. And, and, but, but come on, how often do we need to, and, and again you know, everybody knows, I live with a bunch of chargers here and I run into'em. They come to my store and I talk to'em how much more do we need to see the charging charges, coaching, staff, blow games with their decisions, whether it be Anthony. So Anthony Lynn do it too. Yeah. So like how much more do we need to see of that? Well, look, I mean, Michael Lombardi talks about a good. Is, you know, who's evaluating the evaluators, right? Maybe there's a flaw in how the charters for an office is evaluating coaches as well. Right? That, that that's a separate topic altogether. Yes. Any case that's, you know, we'll, we'll see how that all goes. By the way something we were talking about. That's hilarious. So Cowboys and chargers, having joint practices, obviously the Cowboys being the, having the. Half of their training camp in Oxnard, California SoCal has the largest concentration in cowboy fans in the nation, outside of the state of Texas. So they're there every year. Practicing with the chargers, the quarterbacks on both sides had a friendly little target practice competition. They were standing about, I wanna say, 25, 30 yards away from a target. Basically going back and forth in terms of seeing which group of quarterbacks could hit the target. And then that more often, and, you know, surprisingly, you know, Dak Prescott did. Okay. Justin Herbert did was, I don't think he, he got, he hit it once and the Cowboys won off the back of Ben DCI. This is so Ben deci hit like four of them still disgusting and he put the Cowboys over the top. so how about that? I mean, Not just in Herbert, not Dak Prescott, not chase Daniel. Who's been in the league for a while, but Ben UCCI who put this thing away for the Cowboys, Cowboys win the competition, target competition. What are your thoughts about quick char on Ben? DeNucci getting the win for his team. Okay. If I, if I, if I had to play game of horse, And, you know, I had a buddy of mine who couldn't move. He had two knee replacements and he couldn't move, but that dude, I could never beat him in a game of horse. I mean, this dude would do trick shot after trick shot and they would go to play half court and he just absolutely shook the bed. So what you're telling me is that, is that the Cowboys and the chargers decide to play the football versions game of horse and your boy Ben Dani bought. Gucci wanted fantastic goes to, goes to show you how, you know, the, the drills that they were doing, how re relatively important they are to the game of right. Best quarterbacks in the, and you have a perennial. League, you know, starting quarterback and Dak Prescott, not even come close and boy, our boy Ben deci won. Fantastic. Okay. Next you're gonna tell me that played a game of shoots and ladders and bend deci came in first. Congratulations. Well, you know, he like likes play chess too. Yeah, sure. He does. But that's a good analogy. Ben the Nuci's good at horse, but he can't perform in the actual game of basketball. So exactly. But I thought it was just hilarious that he, he was the one that put it over to the top and it was actually Dak and, and Herbert that contributed to the least of that, to that competition. So to your point goes to show you how critical that is. Last thing I'll say what the Cowboys I'm excited. Kivan Turpin. Good returner Cowboys punter, pat anger was the pro bowl punter for the NFC last year, coming off for great season, a kicker I'm concerned at kicker. Brett Maher who was on the team two years ago was just before Greg Z line was just awful. I mean, this guy, he would nail a 63 yarder against Philly, and then he'd miss a 32 yarder. I mean, he was all over the place. He's their only kicker on the roster right now, which I'm bummed about. There was a kid named Liam high LA, who, who was really good. He made every kick. We asked him to make last year when Zion was hurt, some reason. Brett Maher beats him out. Apparently. So I'm, I'm I like the special teams that I'm not, I'm concerned at kicker. So anyways some something to watch there. When, when did we decide to do a, I thought we already spoke about the Cowboys on moving on. I'm I believe in Jim, Jim bones, fossil, one of the best in the game with special teams turn this thing. Let's go from, from the unknowns of you know, Ben UCCI and Liam hybrid LA. A very known NFL world. Ty, that would be Brett Farve recently weighing in on what the Niners are doing with Jimmy Rolo and he to put a bluntly disagrees with the way the Niners are going about their quarterback situation. He said, quote, what Jimmy has done is win and win and win. And letting him go to me is absolutely crazy. Your thoughts here? Sh I'd be curious. I, I, I, I heard this quote and I also couldn't help, but wonder. And think that Brett Farve is maybe applying a bit of his own personal experience to this, because you think about Brett Farve, you know, Aaron Rogers had to wait in the wings until he was ready to retire. And even when he wanted to come back, they said, no, you know? Right. So you gotta think, you know, he's looking at it from a personal standpoint and, and weighing in on, on a veteran who's won has a good track record. Any validity here to Brett far, or he just kind of taken this too person. I think, I think he's taken it too personal. Because here's the thing we saw. We saw the 49ers lose a super bowl that they should have won. And why can't they hit it? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Because why Jimmy G couldn't hit a very easy post pattern to, was it a manual Sanders? It was a manual Sanders. I wouldn't say easy, but it was the throw you should be able to make as a starting quarterback. It's it's, it's a throw it's it, wasn't a throw where it was a pure timing throw. That was wide open because I remember watching that game. And as soon as that throw was made, I remember saying, oh, game over. I said, game over, assuming he makes a throw. Right? No, because I, I saw, I saw I was the way I watched football. I, I, you know, I, I watched it as from a. From a player's perspective. I, I, I saw the way the zone was going and, and, and I saw him splitting the safeties. I'm like, oh shit, it's done. Just hit him, just hit him, hit him. And he threw it. I'm like, oh, game over. I'm like, are you kidding me? He just, he just overthrew that. And if you, if the 49ers don't believe that Jimmy G. We'll take him the next step over and above of where a guy like Deshaun Watson, a guy like, you know, Patrick Mahomes, a guy like Aaron Rogers could do. I don't blame him for making that move. Yeah. I, I, I really don't. The only thing that I would say to that is I understand that it's like this guy took you. We say this guy took you. I mean, obviously it's a team effort, but he was the quarterback of a team that was in the NSC championship. And I actually had control that game for. A long time. And if, if it wasn't for like a Jimmy ward dropping in a, a very routine interception that you, you don't even get that kind of a shot in practice. I mean, it was a duck of a ball that's all right. In his lap, nines might be the ones in the super bowl. Maybe the nines won in the super bowl. So, you know, Jimmy, Jimmy had left. Yeah. But who jar? You could say that about Jared go. Jared Goff was in the super bowl also. And, and look what happened with the ranch. I, I agree. The only nuance there char is that is. The Rams got Matthew Stafford to replace. That makes a ton of sense. Right? Right. Whereas the Niners getting trail Lance, he's obviously not Matthew staffer. We don't know what he is. Right. He might be Jewish. He might be better in the next 10 years than Matthew Stafford. He might, he might, he might. So we'll, we'll we'll see. But, but look, legend, wave zoom. We gotta talk about it. You know, I personally trust the miners in this one. I think that right. Shanahan knows what he's doing. He's not on the hot. By any means he doesn't have to be, make a move. Maybe like Matt rule has to do in Carolina. So if he is making this decision, I think it's cuz he, he sees something that maybe the rest of us don't see quite yet in trade lands. It's it's look, if, if they believe that trade is gonna be their quarterback of the future, they're gonna get him for four more years on a rookie contract pay pay guys like, you know I mean, how much is the trade lines is making 5 million. I mean, like I forget. Yeah. It's the trivial, right. Something trivial. It's not hit, it's not heading to cap R and what we have to remember too short is, you know, even in Brett FARs time, which wasn't like that long ago, but we're talking, you know, like a decade ago, right. The idea of quarterbacks coming and playing as fast as they do now, it wasn't really that prevalent. Right. So it was very much this, like antiquated. Come in learn the ropes, like the Troy Amans and PA Mannings of the world coming in from day one as the number one pick and starting, that was like weird. That was an anomaly that didn't used to happen. Yeah. But, but they also, they also failed, paid Manning was three and 13. Troy Aikman was, was one 15. Yeah. He was one 15. Right. And it's like, so, so it was just different. It's different now. They're they're coming. Knowing much more ramping much faster now. Well it's you're right, but it's not because they know much more it's because NFL offenses have become more like college offenses to where to, to where quarterbacks are coming a faster. Yeah. You know, and also the rules are more favorable for offenses. I there's a lot that goes into that. Absolutely. So in any case, that's the deal, but I think ultimately it's your point, sir? I agree. Niners are gonna be better off long term going this direction. Hopefully Jimmy gets a fair shot somewhere, wherever that might be. From one legend to another. The goat, Tom Brady. He is back at camp and apparently sure there was rumors thought, what was he doing? What was going on? Why was he out? People were saying, was he on the mask singer? There was rumors about that. like, no, he was just taking a vacation with his family. You just want, he, he ahead of time. He said, Hey, I wanna take this time with my family before, before summer's over. He spent time with my kids. That was really it's, you know, and it's like kind of making a mountain out of a Mo. Apparently we were even talking about, well, he wanted to go to Miami and then, you know, he, he, you know, he got Bruce S reassigned and he's doing, he just wanted, he just wanted go the Asia with his family. It's it's, that's not a sin. And we said when, when you've been in the league, as long as Brady has he's on that. Right. Do you remember, do you remember the story I told you about my buddy, Dan Turk? Yeah, he was the 14 year vet was hitting golf balls when you guys were all sling away and, and, and look, and, and I, I, I'm not gonna say I hate being right, because I love being right. But that's, that's what I do. I mean, come on, it's Tom Brady, like, and I even said it, I, I said, what did Tom Brady, all of a sudden, he is gonna forget how to throw the ball after 23 training camps. It's it's not even that. I think, I think it's just the optics, right? In light of the Miami situation. Right. Okay. Fair. So I think, I think that's when you combine those things, is there as you wanna be here, but look, it's it's, I think it's behind us. You know, some people will actually hypothesizing, is this another way that Brady's trying to get a leg up on people? Like, why don't you underestimate me? Right. Like he, he, he sometimes plays ch I shouldn't say so else. He plays chess. A lot of the time, all the time, you know, he, a couple years ago, he came out and protested these training camp practices, more of them being mandatory, anything it's not right. The players should be able to have more, you know, OTAs and not have to show up. And Troy Aikman came out and said, oh, don't fall for it. He's doing that. Cuz he wants less people to report and prepare more while he's doing it twice as much. He doesn't give, he doesn't give Dan about the players. He wants, you know, like, and it's like, damn, Troy, you kind of nailed that, bro. I didn't even think about that, but he is right. so, absolutely. So, so how do you know this? Isn't Tom Brady, maybe just posturing in some way too, to make us think, oh, well he's not, he doesn't really wanna be there and he's taking time off and you know, maybe he's at San Cole, blood assassin. I, I, I think, I think really, you know, Akins, Akins, razor, where, you know, the simplest solution is, is usually the right solution, correct. The fact is that, that he probably, when he retired and we know that there's been issues that he's spoken around publicly about his family life and the importance that he needs to show his family life. And he told his wife and, and what I told you, I said, listen, his life's not gonna be that much different. It's just basically four months outta the year and wanted to deal was we want to take a family vacation the summer with the kids. Okay. I'm gonna talk to the Tampa bay backers. Hey guys, I'll come back, but I really want to have a shortened training cap. No problem, Mr. Brady, as long as you come in and, and, and like, you know what you come in, when you think you're ready, right? You wanna, you wanna show up week, week one go. That's it. That's it. Yeah. Well, look, he is going to start the final preseason game. This. At Indianapolis. So we'll see how that goes. That's Saturday night, he's gonna be playing in that game. I'm guessing maybe he'll get a couple series and and get outta that. You know, when I was surprised our, the chiefs have played Patrick Mahomes, they've started him for the first couple series of, of both games so far and interesting there, they're just trying to get the reps out. Same with the bills and Josh Allen and vote. I tell you. Both us look like they're picking up. They left off. I mean, these guys both look very impressive. I'm more surprised about the bills doing that than I am. With the, with the chief, the chiefs, they have all new brand new Tyre isn't there and right. And most important thing. The most important thing for receivers and quarterback is, is timing. And, and you need to have live game situation with, with guys trying to take your head off in a game. To work on that timing. So I'm not, I'm not surprised at all by Mahomes and his cause. Look, his top two receivers are, are transplants are, are imports. Yeah. You know, Juju and you have MBS. So I'm not surprised at all. Funny enough too, you know the chiefs tonight are playing the Packers. And I think, I think those actually see both sides play starters because Aaron Rogers like the chiefs and ma. He's gotta slew new targets as well. And I think it's absolutely he hasn't played yet. I would think at some point he's gotta get a couple reps in there with, with, with the new guys he does, except except that the court like, like the veteran receivers on his team are guys that he knows. You got, you got Randall, got Randall co there. Right. You learned a Lazard. So so yeah, so, but, but when, when you are starting receivers are gonna be a combination of, of brand new players and draft choices. You have, you have to play, you have to play and therefore you're gonna have to play your old and, and, you know, to, to, to protect him. So you know, and hopefully for us, that means selfishly tonight, we get to see a little bit of. Rogers and Mahomes. Absolutely. That's but yeah, Brady's gonna be back, man. It's just, it's just this, this week of preseason games. Right. And then we're we're I think we're, we're what we're, we're a week off and then it's off to the races. So yes, sir. I, I finished sure. Two weeks from today, we're gonna be talking about Rams bills, the start of the season. I mean, my goodness. This is gonna be, yeah, this, this came out. I tell my wife. It's almost football season again, she's like, I didn't even know it ended. Did it end gives, gives you an idea of how things are in the Sava household. Oh yeah. The Persian, the Persian lasagna that she makes for you for Sundays. That's fantastic. yeah, exactly. Exactly. Well, listen Dallas does both the third, the third highest Persian population in the country. So we, we gotta come correct over here. That is, that is true. That is. But in, in any case, man hard knocks this week, I know we, we didn't get to it as much. There was a lot more to talk. I wanna let, to get your thoughts. I'm at a point with hard knocks and I know I've talked about this before. I like Dan Campbell. I'm botted on Dan Campbell. I wanna see him manage the strategic side of the game. I know you've said, well, look, he's got other coaches that can do that. Here's the issue. All the other coaches are also former players, right? Like, like where is the adult in the room? On the strategy side on, on his staff. I'm not saying he can't do it. I'm just saying I want to see him do it at some point. You've gotta go beyond motivating the guys to being able to manage the game situations, play situational football, have a strategic point of view. And I, I, I'm not saying it's not there. I'm just saying, I, I don't quite see that yet. It might be there and I would love to see him take that step, but I'm just getting the point where, okay, he's a motivator. There's no question about it. He's gonna get the. but that in the NFL, that has a runway that has a runway and he's gotta get better at the chess, chess side of the game. I don't expect to see that. It's it's a fair look. It's a fair question. It's it's a fair question. But the answer to that I think is gonna be him. Right. And we're not gonna get that answer in, in, in preseason, but, but, or via hard NOGS and again, I have the concern, like for example, you had Sean McVay when he got hired by the Rams. He's an offensive guy. And he took that offense. He got the most, he could get out of Jared Goff and he transformed them. The smartest thing he did was bringing Wade Phillips to say, listen, Wade, you're a veteran. You run the D I'll run the offense. And I've got an adult in the room. I, I don't know who he has. Who, who Dan Campbell has in a similar fashion. That can be, Hey, you're the motivator? You're you are a leader of men, but who can I actually. That's gonna be my right hand on, on the strategy side. That's that's what I'm that's my question. I think McVey did a great job of kind of recogniz. Where his potential flaws might be in covering it with a great hire, like Wade Phillips. What is, what is Dan Campbell doing in a sense? I think he, himself being, haven't been a interim head coach and being in haven't to make those decisions. I saw, I saw it in hard knocks. Here's the one that decided to go for it on fourth down, which by the way, great, great call in preseason. You wanna put your, you wanna put your team in stress, situations like that to see how they'll handle. Yeah, and, and good story. We talked about David bla last week, fumbled the game away in, in, in the, in the first game. This time he comes back and ends the first half on a touchdown drive to put the team up. So, so good, good showing there from him. Good to see the, get back on the saddle. Anything else standing out to you at this team at this point? No, I just, the more, the more I see, the more I like it, I like it. You know, the, the it's I really like almond Ross, Saint brown. I, I saw him. They didn't talk much about him this, but I saw him running running routes and man he's out on a vengeance. Yeah. He, he is playing with a chip on his shoulder. And the thing that I saw, remember how I said Jamal Williams was talking maybe too. Right. Those are guys that you kind of like, kind of like, okay, you're, you're talking a little bit too much. Look what he did. He, he came out there and he, he was arguing with everybody. And as soon as live drill started, he, he dropped the ball. Yeah. You know, so it it's, it's one of those guys that dude, you, you, you need to, you need to like really focus on what's important and that you're talking about. There was, there was a sequence there in, it was live drills, joint practice with the Colts. Yeah. I think it was, I hear Alexander who was guarding. And I think, you know, they, they were both getting really, really scratchy. And I mean, there was some next level, I mean, a lot of trash talk happening there was like, dude, you gotta break it up, man. This is, you know, and I think he dropped the ball, but then I think Z Alexander did hold him as well. He just didn't hammer. Here's the thing act always. Russ SCRM said this to me once he said, act like you've been there. Like you freaking caught, you caught a pass on one on ones, Jamal, and, and you're supposed to be kind of like the, the, the leader of this offense. And then he caught the pass and he spiked the ball and, you know, yeah, you you've, you've been in, you've been in NFC championships and, and so on and so forth. And you are celebrating, catching a one-on-one pass against yeah. In a drill and look, I mean, I mean to, to, to compare it to. Another lion's running back the, the great one, Barry Sanders. I mean, they, they, you know, and he was notorious for this. I mean, he would go hand the ball to the ref when he's scored and they asked him why he sick. Cause my father told me act like you've been there, act like you've been there. And and look, I mean, he's Jamal man learned from a fellow line running back, maybe maybe not, not, not to that extent, but a little more humility, right? No, but, but, but it goes to show you though it it's like it's like the, the, the euphemism of, of the bark being louder than the bite. I mean, like you were talking all this. I like Jamal. I like Jamal as a, I do too. He's a solid running. He's a solid number two running back. But, but yeah, I mean, you wanna see more, a little more composure in a leader and a veteran of the team. Right? Right. But in any case, man, we'll be back next week. Talking more current events. These hopefully in these games, we'll have more talk about shark, cuz we'll get some starters actually playing in these games. Praying for no one, please. No more injuries, please. Let's go on the season. Healthy let's let's avoid this final leak of preseason with no major injuries. No one wants to see that no matter what. Absolutely. And and yeah, man, two weeks away, two weeks away, baby. No, sir. It's it is getting closer. My friend. All right, buddy. Look looking forward to it, man. And look just letting you know, I'm, I'm leaving for Vegas today. Really? Yeah. I finally decided to partake in the reunion for the Raiders. All these years I've been getting the invites and, and and I always felt bad about doing it because, you know, I said, I always tell people, I didn't play with the Raiders. I got hurt with the Raiders, but I'm, I'm taking one of my boys to the and they're gonna take us all around the stadium and, and, and who knows what they have planned for us for four. So for the next four days, I'll be I'll be watching training champ and and dude, and hanging out with the Raider. Take, take some insights down first, man. You know, tell, tell us what is that, what is that Devante, Derek? Absolutely. You know, I'll be watching for that. So by the way, something that I was surprised about, they were asking like, Durwin James, about who? The hardest people to guard. He mentioned, he mentioned like keen and Allen Devant and then he goes hunter Renfro, and oh yeah, I think it was Ryan Clark was talking to him and he goes, you you're talking about the encyclopedia salesman, hunter repro and, and Durwin was like, bruh, have you, have you watched a tape? Like put on the. Put on the tape, you know what I'm talking about?
