Hello, and welcome back to the Hannah London podcast. So now we're nearing up to the end of January. We're going into February, many things coming up in February Lauren. So we have Valentine's Day. And one of the topics of that is Lips, lips, Lips, lips, Hannah London, we have many offers, including this lip filler offer that we're pushing for this month. You're joined once again with me Rion the Front of House and our Operations Manager, Lauren.
Lauren 0:25
Hi, everyone. Thanks for having me back.
Reon 0:28
Perfect. So I definitely think I don't know, I think we were speaking about this earlier, Lauren, where we were talking about planning for the month of February. Valentine's Day on lips.
Lauren 0:37
Absolutely. I mean, I got mine done two weeks ago by one of our amazing practitioners. And it does get you feeling like all kissable lips, you know, ready for this season. And so it is a very opportune time to be talking about lip fillers today.
Reon 0:53
Definitely everyone wants that perfect pout. So when it comes to lip fillers and just sort of any augmentation when it comes to face, one of the most common questions we get is what exactly are lip fillers.
Lauren 1:03
So what I would say is lip fillers are injectable treatments using hyaluronic acid based product, we use a range of different services and products in the clinic. So for example, we do use Juvederm, we also use Teoxane. And depending on the look that the patient wants to go for, we ascertain exactly how much filler out we would administer. These are always administered by medical professionals. And we would say for example, for myself, I wanted something subtle, but hydrated and plump. So I went for half a mil. Some people who want something more pronounced, may go for up to one mil. But as a clinic, we don't offer anything above one mil in one sitting, we believe that you should allow it to settle. And if you feel you need any more, then we would address that at the time.
Reon 1:54
Definitely adding on to that. So as you mentioned, we do offer a range of hyaluronic acid fillers. This is something that's obviously within the skin, it's very natural. There are other fillers on the market that are calcium based, they're more permanent. The reason we don't choose to use these, they can last up to two to five years, but they aren't exactly reversible. So obviously you may be trying lip fillers. And one thing that we think is a benefit of having you know, lip filler treatment is that you know, you can try it out maybe if it's not the right look for you. It is reversible, we do have something to you know, reverse that and give you the natural lips back. However, if you were to go to maybe another clinic, whether you want something a little bit more permanent, you possibly stuck with that look, or you will have to surgically remove that. So that would be definitely something and we've had a quite a few horror stories. Yeah, in clinic, probably for be for a different podcast. But also going back on to what you said about how much we offer. We've had people coming in wanting to mil three mil loads in their lips. And adding on to that the reason why we don't like to overfill the lips is the lips over on the faces of such a small part. If you overfill this area, the filler has nowhere to go, it will migrate. And I think that's what we're seeing a lot more of these days, these sort of kind of overfilled pillow face like you have a shelf of filler above your lip. I don't know if you've seen it. Lauren, what are your thoughts on this?
Lauren 3:20
Absolutely, there's a huge amount of migration within the industry, which is why it's so important to choose the correct injector. And also to not allow the customer to sway you as a professional, they may want more and more and more. And a lot, we see a lot of patients now who went for quite a lot of filler built up over time coming to us getting them dissolved and refilled because they want to go back to zero. See how their natural lips looking. And then it get a more natural, youthful, plump pout without being overfilled.
Reon 3:53
Yeah, I think that's definitely what we're all about Hannah London is not about making a different person. It's just you know, you're beautiful the way you are, but these little things can just be something to improve that. So moving on, how long would you say that lip fillers last?
Lauren 4:05
So it really depends on person to person. It depends on your metabolism. It depends on the product used, but what I would say is 6 to 12 months. It depends on for example on me I have a slow metabolism. So mine does last around 12 months however I have some colleagues that actually find theirs dissolves I mean within three months because their metabolism is so fast but they also do things like regular use sauna and steam, which we know does make your filler have a much shorter shelf life.
Reon 4:37
Amazing. And another question are lip fillers permanent?
Lauren 4:42
Nothing is permanent, even if it's promoted as permanent. So we don't want anything to be permanent. That our body is changing all the time. Our body is a living organism. Our skin is forever changing. You know our bones are adjusting, our ligaments, our tendons, nothing is permanent. So we would never want to put something in the body that we were considered to be permanent. Because you don't know how, as you age, your lips are gonna change. So I would always advise, never go for an option where they tell you it's permanent. So definitely not permanent and definitely reversible.
Reon 5:22
Definitely, that's a great thing to keep in mind. So in terms of the pain, how would we say if lip fillers are painful? Or are they not? So I know loads of people, they want to get their lips done, they come into branch and the first question we get asked after exactly what they are, Is it painful? Is that a lot of blood? Am I gonna be you know, screaming in the chair. What would you say? Lauren, you said that you had your lips to what was your experience with this?
Lauren 5:46
Absolutely. So we do use filler, after we have numb the area. So we have EMLA cream put on the area for at least 10 to 15 minutes to make it quite numb. Because there is a level of discomfort you are using a needle however, it is manageable. What I would say is and we do advise to our patients that they take an aspirin afterwards and maybe use some Arnica gel to minimise discomfort and reduce bruising. But it is manageable. I believe with any kind of aesthetic treatment, they are all manageable. I mean, I know for myself, I wouldn't want to go for my lips, if it's my time of the month, because it will make me more sensitive. But I mean, I have a stress ball in my hand. It didn't make me cry didn't make me shout. I was absolutely fine. So it depends from person to person. I'm somebody who gets inflammation after my filler. And I would say that can be a little bit tender. But honestly, I wouldn't keep coming back if it was that painful.
Reon 6:46
Definitely. And I think also as a clinic, we make the conscious effort not just to have the topical anaesthetic we also do by our fillers actually do have lidocaine in them as well. So even though the first injection site may be a slight scratch or maybe a bit of discomfort throughout the procedure, the pain does subside as the Lidocaine does kick in. So, are they safe? I think this is one of the biggest questions everyone you know, you get, you know, on this is a big, big topic. You have people that are like, you know, very much No, do what you want to be happy. But then you have people that think they're super supernatural, and they think this is almost poison. I've seen article that if you've seen them as well, that they're saying, What is this? What are you putting into your face? What would what is your take on this, Lauren?
Lauren 7:27
Okay, so the filler that we use is hyaluronic acid based. And hyaluronic acid is actually a property that is found naturally within the body. Which is why when we say that if you dissolve your lips, you take away a bit of your own natural hyaluronic acid. It is a property that is found in the human body. So I would say yes, it is safe provided you do not overfill your lips and go to an injector that doesn't use reputable products, is not properly trained, is not a medical professional. So if you go to a qualified person, they're using a reputable product, they're aware of your anatomy, you are being sensible and not continually filling and filling and filling your face, then there is no reason with any kind of medical aesthetic treatment, there are always potentially adverse reactions, but that we do make our patients aware of this. And it is rare, it's not the norm. It's very, very, very unlikely that you will be allergic to the filler. So you're not running too much risk. All we would say is you get some inflammation and potentially a little bit of bruising afterwards. But yes, they are FDA approved.
Reon 8:46
Definitely, Lauren, I agree with you definitely with all those factors that you said. So things such as not just the product, but you know the injector, so loads of people may come in to us and also ask about price. You know, you're not just paying some people may be able to find these products that either if they're not even if they're using the same product that we use, that's one but you're not just spending money on the product you're spending on the expertise, the time and I believe it truly does show you can give someone any sort of filler, but it's the technique that's used to and then that is the result because there's many people that they say they've been injected with the same product, and they've had horrible experiences and I think that's what comes down to obviously, us having in clinic medically qualified and trained practitioners. Perfect. So granted, I've come in and I've had lip treatment done, as going on to aftercare. How long could I wait till I apply lip products? Or if you're a female? When can I apply makeup? This would be a great question for you, Lauren. How long did you have to wait to apply lipstick on?
Lauren 9:42
The same day.
Reon 9:43
The same day really? Haha Lauren is very very glamorous guys. So I know this is why I'm asking all the questions.
Lauren 9:51
The same day. I mean, it's up to you. You've got the injection sites which you have to be a bit mindful for and if you're feeling a bit tender then you might not want to however I always want see the real result. Which I don't really see until I put my lipstick on. Some people could say 24 hours, but honestly, you don't have to wait.
Reon 10:10
Perfect. That's great. And what benefits would you say that you received after having this treatment? Was it something to do, obviously, there may be a certain confidence aspect. But in terms of just general like lips, because we are, as you said, hyaluronic acid is something that is, you know, present within our skin and the makeup of our skin. But there's many reasons that we do actually get lip fillers. So it could be for maybe if you're youthful, and you want to more, you know, pout. Or as well, as we're older, you know, our collagen starts to break down as we age, and the lips actually do get thinner over time. So sometimes adding a bit more of fullness in the mouth can actually make you look more youthful. But back again, with your experience, what was it that you found that you experienced?
Lauren 10:52
So I like the idea of having more surface area for my lipstick. And also, I just like the fact that if you have any slight asymmetry in your lips, naturally, this can be adjusted, you know, most of our faces are all asymmetrical, you know, there is the Golden Triangle of beauty. And a lot of us are not that close to that, unfortunately, but correcting mild asymmetry. Or if you've got like, for example, a very full bottom lip and a slim top lip. I've seen for some of our more mature clients, it's been amazing for lines around the mouth. So you know they've got smokers lines, we can really help to smooth that out. And you do lose collagen as you age. So yeah.
Reon 11:36
It is really interesting. Sometimes you normally just think about lip fillers as just, you know when you think about celebrities like Kylie Jenner, but on our older, more mature patient, who is you know, obviously going to the ageing process, how they're almost just gives so much juice back to their face. Absolutely crazy. But moving on from there, obviously, how long would this treatment take? So, you know, loads of treatments have been compared to like a lunchtime appointment or this will take a long time. In your experience? How long would you say this would take.
Lauren 12:05
So we book Between 45 and 60 minutes. 45 if you're a repeat customer, 60 minutes if you're a brand new patient to us. And in that time, we would do a full consultation, we would assess exactly what it is you're looking for, so that we can select the exact right product for you, we would then apply the numbing cream, and then take your before and after pictures. These are not for us to post, these are so that we can show you it's confidential. But to show you where you started to where you ended up so you can see the real results, then we would apply the filler. Afterwards, we would make sure you're feeling very comfortable. You'll have a look in the mirror and fall in love with your results and give you all your full aftercare.
Reon 12:50
Amazing. And what about the side effects? With any procedure? There is of course many side effects. But pertaining to lip filler directly. What would you say were there anything that you experienced such as side effects, or anything that a client potential client coming in should be aware of.
Lauren 13:06
So one thing I would say is with lip filler for me personally, I do get bruising, and I get swelling. I believe every patient gets inflammation, but not every patient bruises, it just depends on your vasculature. But for me, I would say one of the main side effects that can be treated is we would advise taking aspirin just to ensure you know, you're keeping the blood a little bit thin when you've had those areas injected. You can use Arnica gel to reduce the bruising. And they can be little bit tender, you can also get some lumps, which tend to resolve themselves within six to eight weeks. But for some people, it resolves quicker mine are almost completely resolved and my lip filler was only done about two weeks ago. So yeah, then the main side effects, there are very, very rare side effects like vascular occlusion. They say 1 in 1000. Yeah, it's quite rare. It's quite rare.
Reon 14:04
But I think that comes down to also the injector going back to the practice. So if anyone doesn't know what vascular occlusion is, it is when filler or some sort of blockage is injected into the blood vessel, which obviously causes occlusion which prevents prohibits the blood from passing, obviously, blood is circulating around our bodies. So the area this would be injected. So for instance, lips, that would obviously cause tissue necrosis, which means as the blood can't get around the vascular system, the tissue begins to die. And as this begins to die, you know, it can be treated within a short amount of time, maybe within the first 48 hours, which is when we put the enzyme of hyaluronidase in there, and we can reverse that. But in very serious cases, you could actually end up losing the tissue. And there's many ways to mitigate this, which is what we employ in clinic. All of our doctors and practitioners they aspirate. So this is before every injection sight, we're able to check your foot inside a vessel to ensure that we do not cause this not everyone does. As I said that this is why it's very, very good that you thoroughly vet who you're going to see.
Lauren 15:11
Absolutely. So it sounds like what we've been talking about is a little bit scary. But I think it's better that as a reputable clinic, we are aware of the risks, and we do everything possible to ensure that you love your lips, and you never experience anything like this.
Reon 15:27
Definitely everything is not perfect and Babila. But we obviously try to make things make you aware and make sure that you go into a treatment, knowing about all the side effects. Obviously, we try our best to make sure nothing happens. But I feel like full disclosure is something that we have responsibility to do as an aesthetic clinic.
Lauren 15:44
Absolutely.
Reon 15:46
Perfect. So going on to cost. How much would you say prices are around for lip fillers in London? I think they can vary. It actually does depend on the clinic. So I've seen anything from I'd say maybe 350 onwards to maybe even 800 from some clinics.
Lauren 16:06
Absolutely, it depends on the reputation of the clinic, or it depends on what they think they can charge, I would say I think we are priced pretty reasonably.
Reon 16:13
Exactly.
Lauren 16:14
And if you're going to somebody and they're offering you something with bargain basement prices, you will do always have to ask yourself, Is there a reason for this? Are they fully qualified? Are they using the correct product.
Reon 16:27
And I think that's something that we're used to going back to seeing in clinic, we've had countless of you know, young girls coming in here that they've obviously, when you're younger, you're not able, you know, you may have a part time job. So you're not able to obviously afford certain prices. They've gone and got sometimes even these packages, and they're left absolutely distraugh. Yes, like either it's gone wrong, and they look heavily overfilled. Or they've even had vascular occlusion where we've had to come and treat. And obviously, you actually end up paying maybe three or four times the price because you have to dissolve and then you have to get it done again. So if you actually get it done and just pay at the regular price, you actually end up saving money, wrong way around. So yeah, I think there's definitely some food for thought there.
Lauren 17:09
Absolutely. And we do sometimes do offers. It's not that regular because it is such a popular service. But we will be doing some around Valentine's just as a treat for our clients.
Reon 17:20
Of course we love you all and obviously when we get a chance we'd love to obviously put some offers on especially as we said Valentine's Day. Lips, I feel like everyone is welcome around here with nice big pouty lips. But yeah, that has been the Hannah London podcast and we've been speaking about lip fillers today. If you guys had any other treatments that you were maybe thinking about or have questions, please feel free to send them to us and we look forward to seeing you next time. It's been Lauren, and Reon.
Lauren 17:44
Thank you so much guys. See you next time.
