Chasing a massive goal entirely by yourself isn't brave—it is a fast track to emotional and operational bankruptcy.

Fear, doubt, and uncertainty possess a highly sophisticated psychological superpower: they convince you that you are the absolute only one struggling. The moment you buy into that lie, your nervous system slips on an "invisibility cloak." You retreat into isolation, overthink every structural metric, and transform a normal, heavy day of business building into a paralyzing, lonely downward spiral.

In this transparent episode of the Living Lucky® Podcast, Jason and Jana pull back the curtain on what it looks like to perform brutal, microscopic work beneath the surface of a company. When you are digging a deep tunnel to your gold, the shovel gets heavy and progress can feel deceptively slow. They expose why "hunkering down" out of pure ego will cause your feet to get permanently stuck in the concrete of your own over-commitment—and why scheduling intentional play is the exact business strategy required to bring your courage back online.

What you’ll discover when you hit play:

  • The Long Runway Matrix: Why a wide, deep operational foundation matters infinitely more than immediate speed when building a massive jet.
  • Two Climbers on a Rope: A mechanical breakdown of healthy partnership boundaries, including the adaptive elasticity that can catapult you forward.
  • The Box Label Trap: Why it is neurologically impossible to diagnose your own structural blind spots while you are sitting directly inside the box.
  • The Multiplication of Energy: How to emulate the aerodynamics of geese flying in formation to systematically distribute stress and switch leadership leads.
  • The Age-50 Friendship Deficit: A blunt look at why highly ambitious adults hide their true feelings, bury their dreams, and fail to build a circle that tells them the data-driven truth.

Stop carrying your emotional and financial liabilities alone. If your current strategy relies on isolating your struggles from your peers, this conversation is your definitive signal to step outside your own head.

Listen now, subscribe, and trade your lone-wolf isolation for an unstoppable team.

NUGGETS

  • Isolation turns normal signals into permanent defects. Fear, doubt, and uncertainty are universal human inputs, but facing them alone tricks your brain into thinking you are uniquely broken.
  • Play is a high-yield performance asset, not an avoidance strategy. Refusing to step away from the grind hardens your stress into concrete, while intentional play unlocks creative problem-solving.
  • You cannot read the label of the box from the inside. No matter how self-aware you claim to be, you require an objective outside lens to map your true coordinates and spot your hidden wins.
  • Energy multiplies; it doesn't just add up. Building a team with shared values acts like geese in formation, reducing structural friction and allowing you to trade off the burden of the lead.
  • Hiding your true dream is a symptom of deep unworthiness. Carrying your emotional metrics alone keeps your runway short. True scale requires letting a trusted partner see your blueprint clearly.

Questions:

Why does fear, doubt, and uncertainty cause professional isolation? Fear, doubt, and uncertainty trigger a protective psychological mechanism known as an invisibility cloak, where an individual falsely believes they are the only person experiencing structural struggle. This distortion induces deep shame and anxiety, driving the individual to conceal their problems, avoid direct communication, and isolate themselves from their peers.

How does entering a state of intentional play improve business productivity? Intentional play improves business productivity by functioning as an emotional and psychological pattern-interrupt to chronic burnout. Stepping away from microscopic work allows the executive functioning of the brain to decompress, which lowers nervous system friction, activates latent creative problem-solving, and restores long-term consistency.

What does the "two climbers on a rope" analogy represent in mindset coaching? The "two climbers on a rope" analogy represents the interdependent relationship between high-performing partners or coaches. It demonstrates how individuals can trade off leading and anchoring positions, utilizing the elastic tension of shared values to stabilize each other during setbacks and safely catapult each other toward the summit of their goals.

  • overcoming isolation in entrepreneurship
  • managing fear doubt and uncertainty
  • partnership dynamics in small business
  • how to break a business doom loop
  • benefits of play in professional burnout
  • psychological cost of lone wolf mindset
  • why entrepreneurs get stuck in their own head
  • using the two climbers rope metaphor for success
  • how to build deep friendships as an adult
  • finding an outside perspective for your business growth
  • why building a wide foundation takes a long runway
  • how to stop overthinking your next professional step
  • sharing your goals with an accountability partner

  • The 16th Birthday Breakdown: Tracking the biological origins of your emotional spirals Jana reveals a raw childhood memory of crying on the couch to Wind Beneath My Wings. Discover how your long-term relationship with emotional static dictates how you process business friction.
  • Microscopic Excavation: The unglamorous reality of digging a tunnel to your gold When you enter the deep operational trenches of your company, the dirt gets exceptionally heavy. Turn here to find out why most ambitious visionaries quit right before they strike their massive vein.
  • Stuck in the Concrete: Why your "hunker down" work ethic is a multi-thousand-dollar mistake Refusing to pause your labor isn't discipline—it's a psychological deficit that turns your stress into permanent cement. Learn why scheduling intentional play is the ultimate blueprint to unlock revenue.
  • Paving the Parking Lot: The strategic logic behind a multi-year long runway If you look back on your timeline and feel intense frustration over your speed, you are misinterpreting your data. Discover why a wide, massive foundation is required to launch an elite jet.
  • The Rubber Band Catapult: Navigating the dangerous elasticity of elite partnerships Climbers use static rope for a reason, but humans default to elastic bands. Access a hilarious and strategic breakdown of what happens when one partner sits on a ledge having a snack while the other shoots for the summit.
  • The Invisibility Cloak: The terrifying speed at which uncertainty breeds total aloneness When the big three—fear, doubt, and uncertainty—infiltrate your mindset, you instantly default to a private defect loop. Learn how to diagnose this hidden retreat before you become completely unreachable.
  • Reading the Box From the Inside: Why your self-analysis is completely compromised You are trying to evaluate your company's performance and life direction while trapped within the exact parameters of your own bias. Learn how to objectify your life like a movie to finally see the label.
  • The Geese Formation: Automating your momentum through strategic energy multiplication If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together. Learn how to engineer an inner circle that systematically cuts your friction in half by trading out the burden of the wind.
  • The Age-50 Disconnect: The literal blueprint for making friends when you think it's too late If you are carrying your heaviest financial and emotional feelings in absolute secret, you are actively capping your scale. Jana and Jason issue a direct, face-to-face invitation to join the ecosystem.

Welcome And Song Banter

Jana Shelfer

Are you ready to create a life you crave? Let's spin that doom loop of negativity into an upward success cycle and start Living Lucky®.

Speaker

Good morning! I'm Jana. I'm Jason. And we are Living Lucky®.

Jana Shelfer

Isn't there a song that goes with that?

Jason Shelfer

We go together like shoe.

Speaker

I'm sure we don't want to be changing.

Jason Shelfer

Chang chang, changity chang, enough.

Jana Shelfer

Enough.

Jason Shelfer

Enough. Get out of here. You're killing me, smalls. There's a I know there's other songs about that.

Jana Shelfer

Yes.

Jason Shelfer

Stand by me.

Jana Shelfer

Oh, that's a good one. Or lean on me. Lean on me. That's kind of uh everything's better together. Yeah.

Jason Shelfer

You're the wind beneath my wings.

Jana Shelfer

Oh gosh. That song makes me cry every time. I still remember on my 16th birthday, I watched that movie and I just sat on the couch and cried. And my dad came out and he was like, Are you okay?

Jason Shelfer

And depressed.

Jana Shelfer

And I snapped. And it was the first time.

Jason Shelfer

Get out of here, old man.

Jana Shelfer

I'm like, I'm fine. And I snapped, and he was like, Whoa, teenage hormones.

Jason Shelfer

She started her period.

Jana Shelfer

Yeah. Stop. Everything's better with a friend.

Why Teammates Keep You Going

Jana Shelfer

Jason and I, as you know, if you've been listening, we have been diving in and really doing some hardcore microscope work microscopic work on our business.

Jason Shelfer

And I'm glad we're doing this business with you.

Jana Shelfer

And that was my point. Is if I was doing this alone, I would not have, I would not still be doing this. It's and that that's that sounds bad. No, it's I have so much fun with you.

Jason Shelfer

Well, it's a there's a long runway here, and there's a lot, there's a lot going on. There's so many people that stop early. It's it's digging a deep tunnel to the gold.

Speaker

Yes.

Jason Shelfer

And the shovel gets heavy, the dirt gets heavy. It's a it's a long tunnel to dig.

Jana Shelfer

And if you don't have someone helping you, if you don't have a coach, if you don't have a teammate, or someone who seriously believes in you more than you believe in yourself.

Jason Shelfer

At times. At times. Right. It's one of those things that says, okay, well, how can how can I help have someone else that puts the wind beneath my wings when I don't have enough momentum on my own?

Jana Shelfer

Because we all have those moments. They're it's called being human, right? Where maybe doubt starts to creep in, fear, uncertainty. Those are the three big ones. Yeah. And sometimes for me it's doubt.

Jason Shelfer

It's just not not knowing what is that next step, and where do I go from here? And getting someone that says, hey, let's just go play.

When Play Gets You Unstuck

Jana Shelfer

Let's just go play. You know, because sometimes it's literally just which I can tell you is not the best business advice. Right. Because Jason and I, that is our our thing. However, that is what gets us unstuck emotionally and psychologically.

Jason Shelfer

Is it not the it's you we say it's not the best business advice? And sometimes I would say sometimes it is the best business advice. But so oftentimes we just ignore it altogether and say hunker down. Like, and oftentimes what happens is if we don't just go play, our feet end up getting stuck in the concrete that we've just laid.

Jana Shelfer

Okay, so I would I would argue that maybe there's a happy medium there.

Jason Shelfer

I will say sometimes I want to go play too much.

Jana Shelfer

We both do. And maybe that is is why our business sometimes has taken longer than I believe it should have.

Jason Shelfer

Well, I think what we've done is we've just we've paved a lot of parking lot. We've paved a long runway, just means we can build a bigger jet. Oh it's all good. I'm excited about where we're going.

Jana Shelfer

Do you do you look back

Building A Foundation That Lasts

Jana Shelfer

though and think, oh my gosh, I would have done it so much differently?

Jason Shelfer

You know, I I thought.

Jana Shelfer

Or do you think we've done it exactly the way God intended?

Jason Shelfer

I thought about that very deeply the other day. Actually, I guess it was over the weekend. So we're at Wednesday now. I thought about it over it was over the weekend, and I was thinking, would I change anything? Like, there are times like of course I there's like I wish things had gone quicker, but also I look at the the foundation of everything, and our foundation is wide and it's deep. So as we build up from here, it's gonna be like massive. So right now we have it is massive, like it is massive now, but it it it can go up forever because of the foundation that we have. Okay, and that's incredible.

The Two Climbers Rope Analogy

Jana Shelfer

Well, our topic today is everything is better with a friend.

Jason Shelfer

Yeah.

Jana Shelfer

Well, I think I just want to say Jason and I have often said we're like almost like two climbers. You know, if you ever have watched climbing documentaries, or maybe you are the brave one that has gone out and tried climbing, we've tried it a few times. It's not really my sport.

Jason Shelfer

Yeah, and I'm scared of heights.

Jana Shelfer

Okay.

Jason Shelfer

I still do it. Like when we go up in the hot air balloons and stuff, for some reason I've had this, there's a call from the void that makes me want to jump out of hot air balloons.

Jana Shelfer

Okay, let's let's don't go there.

Jason Shelfer

Right.

Jana Shelfer

However, it feels like when we are doing anything, it's almost like we're two climbers. And it's it's like we are attached with a rope somehow, and one of us lets the other climb slightly ahead, and then they reach back and say, Okay, come on, it's your turn. And not only am I pulling you up, I'm I'm gonna pull you or help you climb to where I'm at, and then it's your turn to go even further.

Jason Shelfer

Go further, and I'll help push and you climb.

Jana Shelfer

And I'll hold the ground.

Jason Shelfer

Right.

Jana Shelfer

At times, though, we have uh often laughed at ourselves because it I'm like, you know what? You're part of the rubber band is holding me back.

Jason Shelfer

Or like one of us is sitting on the ledge having a having a snack.

Jana Shelfer

Or it's catapulting the other one forward to the to where they're not ready to go yet.

Jason Shelfer

Because there's a elasticity, and it's like, I'm out, I'm gone. Like I'm I just I'm shooting to the the summit right now.

Jana Shelfer

Which is probably why climbers use rope and not rubber bands.

Jason Shelfer

Right. That's funny. Yeah, we we're using we're not using elastic here, we're using something that's it feels though that you and I we use we tend to use the rubber band. But you know what? I like the elasticity of what we have. And it I think it works well for us because we're we are adaptive and we see where we stretch each other. And that gives us more uh I think more flexibility in where we're going and how we get there.

Jana Shelfer

But this podcast is not about us.

Jason Shelfer

That's right.

Jana Shelfer

We're talking about how everything is better with a friend. We often use our own experiences.

Fear Doubt Uncertainty Feel Lonely

Jason Shelfer

The thing is, you when you when you talk about everything's better with a friend, and then you talk about the the fear, the doubt, the uncertainty, it's those three feelings, I think a lot of time that make us feel alone. You know, and when we feel alone, when we feel the fear, when we feel the fear, say that five times. When we feel the doubt, and when we feel the uncertainty, we feel like it's ours.

Speaker

Yes.

Jason Shelfer

We feel like it's ours and it's only ours. So it's almost like this invisibility cloak that we jump into and we say, This is mine, no one can see me in it. Yes, I'm gonna create my aloneness in it. Yes. And when we're doing something alone, that even makes us more isolated and alone.

Jana Shelfer

Oh my god.

Jason Shelfer

You know, so there there's a difference there. But when we're doing something with a friend, the friend can say, No, I see you.

Jana Shelfer

Exactly. So there's pop out of it.

Jason Shelfer

And I also can see where you're winning that you may not see that you're winning.

Jana Shelfer

And maybe you're making this into something bigger than it really is.

Jason Shelfer

Yeah, because you can't, it's back to where you say you can't see the label because you're inside the box. Uh-huh. And so it's like, hey, let's get let's get back here and look at this like it's a movie instead of being so in it because it's important to us, you know? And sometimes we both get in it because it is so.

Speaker

I'm like, come inside this box.

Jason Shelfer

That's right, come inside here. You don't want to see that label. Come inside here.

Jana Shelfer

But if we when we Let's play Doctor, let's go.

Jason Shelfer

Time to sign off.

Jana Shelfer

I'm joking.

Jason Shelfer

Oh, boo. But when we then we when we both take that time out and say, let's let's jump out for a minute and look at this objectively, look at it like a like it's a movie, then we can say, okay, it's different. Then we're not alone, and we get to kind of examine that fear, doubt, and uncertainty.

Go Fast Alone Go Far Together

Jana Shelfer

There's an old saying that says, if you want to go far in life, go or if you want to go fast in life, go alone. And if you want to go far in life, go together. And I just uh this really struck me this morning because it feels to me when I develop a team around me who have who also have the same goals and dreams and values that I have, it does feel that we can almost help each other.

Jason Shelfer

100%.

Jana Shelfer

And there is kind of a first of all, it's it's more fun.

Jason Shelfer

It's more fun, it's a shared vision, it's a it's it's a beautiful there and the multiplication of energy. Oh yeah. Yes, I love that multiplication of energy. It's geese flying together. You're breaking the you're breaking the wind in front, which creates less friction behind the first one. Then you're just trading out um trading out the leader.

Share The Dream With A Friend

Jana Shelfer

Okay, so if you're listening to this right now, what is it in your life that you are trying to do alone? Maybe it's just carrying your feelings.

Jason Shelfer

Ooh.

Jana Shelfer

Maybe it is Maybe you're hiding your dream. Oh share it with a friend.

Jason Shelfer

Share it with a friend, share it with a trusted friend.

Jana Shelfer

Share it with a trusted friend. And if you you're like, I don't have any friends. I'm I'm 50 years old. I don't make friends very easily. Call Jason.
