#17 The Healing Industry Is Making You More Anxious — Here's Why
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
You’re not crazy. You’re just stuck in a system that profits from your panic.
In this fiery, long-overdue episode, Jenny rips the bandaid off a truth no one in the healing world wants to say out loud: both the medical and holistic spaces — yes, even the well-meaning parts — are accidentally keeping you anxious. If you’ve been buried under protocols, obsessed with triggers, or terrified to miss a supplement, this one’s for you.
We’re pulling the curtain back on the fear factory disguised as wellness. Inside this episode, you’ll learn:
- How “root cause” culture is often just another fear loop
- Why more tests, labels, and protocols aren’t helping — they’re hurting
- What actually creates safety in your body (and it’s not another detox)
This episode is your permission slip to stop micromanaging your body and start building trust again.

I've been sitting with this episode for a while because it names something no one in the world wants to admit. It's long overdue and it might ruffle a few feathers. But it needs to be said. It's time we talk about the elephant in the healing room. Yes, the healing world. Yes, even the well-meaning parts is making you more anxious. I know that might sting, but if you've ever found yourself more overwhelmed after seeking help, you're not crazy. By the end of this episode, you'll understand. Number one, how both the medical and holistic models accidentally reinforce anxiety. Number two, why more labels, more testing, and more protocols are not the answer. And number three, what to focus on instead, and how to start feeling safer in your body again. So if you're feeling that pit in your stomach, the one that says healing shouldn't feel this hard, you're in the right place. Let's pull the curtain back on the fear factory, disguised as wellness, and finally name what's really going on. Welcome to the Rebellious Healer, where we ditch the fear, decode the symptoms, and take healing into our own hands. I'm Jenny Peterson, a former holistic practitioner, turn symptom-free mind-body rebel. I help women break free from protocols and step into trust, confidence, and full body healing. If you're done with the rules, restrictions, and outsourcing your power, you're in the right place. So let's play out a story that might sound and feel a little familiar. You wake up already feeling a little off. Your heart's racing a little. And your stomach has this flipping feeling after breakfast. And your mind goes into scan mode. You wonder, is this something serious? Did I eat something wrong? You try to shake it off, but by midday, even the next day, the symptom is still there. Maybe it's even gotten worse. So you book an appointment. They run some tests, maybe you get a diagnosis, IBS, anxiety, autoimmune something or other, you get handed a prescription and told that it might help. And you take it. Maybe it helps a little bit, maybe not, but you still don't feel right. So you start Googling, reading blogs, watching reels, and you find the holistic world. You think, finally, people who get it. But instead of answers, you get more labels. Now it's mold toxicity, Epstein Bar, your MTHFR gene is mutated, you have trauma stored in your fascia, and your food sensitivities are off the charts. You go from taking one pill to swallowing 27 supplements a day, tracking every bowel movement, and being terrified of your own kitchen. And with each protocol comes a new layer of pressure, new rules, new fears, and a growing sense that if you miss one step, you're sabotaging your healing. This doesn't just create overwhelm, it creates deep decision fatigue and a body that's constantly bracing for the next fix. You're not actually healing. You're just managing your way through a to-do list labeled as wellness. Does this sound familiar? Here's the truth. Most healing systems still teach you to fear your body and that there is something wrong with it. They say, you're broken. Here's what to fix. Now they mean well, but the message your nervous system hears is you're still in danger. Before I dive deeper, I want to be honest about something. I was once a part of this fear-mongering healing world too. As a holistic practitioner, I told clients to avoid certain foods because they were labeled indigestible. We ran test after test to see what was wrong with them. And while I told myself I was just helping them make informed choices, the truth was those choices were rooted in fear. I thought I was empowering people, but in reality, I was reinforcing the idea that their body couldn't be trusted, that they were fragile, broken, or always one trigger away from crashing. It took my own burnout and years of trial and error to see it clearly. I wasn't guiding them to safety. I was guiding them deeper into fear. Functional and holistic medicine love to say that they get to the root cause. Their root cause is always something that is outside causing your issues or that there is something wrong with your body. They don't see your body as it's biologically designed. It's basically a natural spin on the medical world. Because what they're calling the root is often just another layer above the actual root. Your subconscious patterns of survival. Say you're told you have a genetic mutation that affects your detoxing, which many people are told this. You now believe your body can't detox on its own. So you start scanning every environment for toxins. You fear your own body. And this belief creates more sympathetic dominance, the very state that blocks healing. Now you're treating your detox pathways with liver support and binders. But the real thing clogging your system? Old subconscious patterns. It's not the liver, it's not the mold. It's the fear, the beliefs, the traumas, the stress, everything that is held within the subconscious that is telling your body that it is not safe to heal. And it also is going to impact the general basic functionings of your body, which includes detoxing. All of these underlying subconscious patterns say, I am not safe here. Those subconscious patterns don't get cleared by protocols or supplements or detoxes. It gets rewired by presence, repetition, and safety. Here's something else most people don't realize, especially if you've spent years inside this fear-based healing loop. Before you can even begin to rewire the subconscious patterns connected to your chronic symptoms, you have to unlearn the beliefs and rules you've absorbed from these broken systems. In fact, the deeper you've gone into the protocols, the more unwinding you often have to do. It's not your fault, it's just the reality. The body that's been micromanaged, feared, and misunderstood doesn't just switch gears overnight. It needs a clean slate, a chance to remember what it feels like to just be without being monitored. And ironically, someone who hasn't been through this maze of do more to get better might have less rewiring to do because they haven't been conditioned to see themselves as broken. So if you've been on this journey for a while and it feels hard to trust something simple, that makes sense. But that's also why this work is so powerful. Let's take this a little deeper. What happens emotionally when you're told you're hard to heal? You're sensitive, your nervous system is dysregulated, you have faulty genes. It's like someone hands you a manual for a machine that they've already decided is defective. So of course you panic. Of course you obsess. You're trying to manage a body you no longer trust. And here's what's even more dangerous. Over time, those labels become your identity. You don't just have quote unquote bad genes, you become the woman with bad genes. You're not just sensitive, you are the sensitive one. Fragile, cautious, needing special care. These beliefs stop being diagnosis and they start being definitions. And without realizing it, your entire nervous system starts organizing around this belief that you are broken. And that belief alone keeps you stuck in survival. And here's something most healing spaces will never mention. Your subconscious can become addicted to the chase. Your brain doesn't just expect symptoms, it expects the sprint to fix them. It starts to believe if I'm not doing something, I'm failing. So you loop, you obsess, you micromanage, and healing becomes your full-time identity. This is survival disguised as self-care. And then there is the diagnosis dependency. You go from medical diagnosis to functional diagnosis to spiritual diagnosis. You start identifying with your symptoms, your sensitivity, your trauma, your blocks. But here's the hard truth. You can't heal while reinforcing the identity of someone who's broken. Your brain creates what it expects. If every day starts with a checklist of what's wrong with you, your brain will find more wrong. So let's pause and really get honest here. So what are you doing to heal every day? Really think about it. Is it a smoothie, a meditation, a supplement pack, some tapping, some affirmations, maybe journaling? But here's the harder question. Do any of those actions directly address the subconscious patterns that are keeping your body in survival mode? Most people are doing a lot of what they think are healing activities, but very few are doing the one thing that actually gives the body permission to heal. Creating safety in the subconscious. Let me give you an example of how these false identities that I talked about can play out in real life. Josie was one of our students in our eight-month evolve program, and she had every label, including Lyme and mold toxicity. She was the queen of trying everything. The mold protocols, the antivirals, the binders, the five different types of magnesium, you name it. She tried it all. At one point, she was even sleeping outside in a tent to avoid the mold she was told was the cause. Josie was smart and she did the research. She fouled every expert. But her body was still in a constant state of fear because the message she internalized was my body is broken, I don't feel safe, and everything around me is a threat. When she came into our program, we asked her to do the scariest thing of all: stop trying to fix everything. No more stacking protocols, no more chasing triggers. Instead, we had her start showing up to make small shifts, one subconscious pattern at a time, one message of safety throughout the day. At first, it felt wrong, almost dangerous to do less. But over time, something shifted. No miracle breakthrough, no heroic effort, just a quiet, steady return to trust. And for the first time in years, Josie's nervous system started to settle, and she felt safe. And that's when everything changed. Her chronic skin conditions, edema, anxiety, and more all disappeared. So if you've been nodding your head this whole time, let me remind you of the three things we walk through today. The medical and holistic world often fuels anxiety by giving you more fear, not more safety. Labels, protocols, and even spiritual bypassing can keep you stuck if they never touch your subconscious patterns. Healing begins when you simplify and shift daily these subconscious patterns, not when you do more. And if this is all resonating, it's because your body is already asking for a new way. Just remember, you're not broken, you are not behind, you've just been overwhelmed by a system that profits from your panic. This is your invitation to stop outsourcing your power and start leading your own healing. And if you're ready for guidance and a clear path for doing the work that actually resolves symptoms long term, instead of trying to piece this all together on your own and getting short-term results, you can apply for the MBR Evolve program using the link in the show notes. Because healing doesn't happen when you keep searching for the next answer. It happens when you decide to step in and become the person who leads it.
