Camp Wins, VBS, And Summer Chaos
SPEAKER_05Well, I am excited to be in the podcast room with the females of the LCC staff. I feel like this is actually my first She Wakes podcast. And so here we are. Jody and Matea and Casey. I'm in Pastor Kelly's chair. Well, we're going to bring Pastor Kelly into this. Oh, I like the same. We're going to call her, see what happens.
SPEAKER_04I'm so glad to be with Casey and Matea. I wasn't scheduled to be with them at all this summer.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, we haven't sat here in a long time. Kelly with bio.
SPEAKER_05Are you guys still not doing, you're not doing she wakes over the summer?
unknownI guess not.
SPEAKER_02I guess not. I don't know if it was the plan. It's just not happening right now.
SPEAKER_05I mean, there the I think a lot of your ladies are listening to this. So it's been gone. Speaking of gone, we've been going to a lot of camps. Like I was loving the, you know, Sunday, Shell and I talked about the fact that we had like almost nearly 400 kids at camp this summer. 180 adults to make it happen. Between VBS, you know, obviously there's some overlap, but that's incredible. So share us with us your favorite. Like I know most of you, Jody, you were involved with VBS One Life and Kids Camp. Yes. Let's go.
SPEAKER_04Yes, and I did do one day visit at Teen Camp just to see if I was missing out. And I determined I wasn't.
SPEAKER_05You were good.
SPEAKER_04Oh, Teen Camp's the bomb. Team Camp is the bomb. I was like, you know what? These kids have grown. And I loved seeing like the ones that I've known since kids and seeing them still there serving and worshiping. And you were there when we slayed. And I was like, that was the only day we won. We need to tell them that. We also hung out with the boys and they did not win. No, we did not. Jamie Texas.
SPEAKER_05He's like, hey, I hear that you guys are getting like it's really hard for your team because like you've won two years in a row and the staff doesn't really want you to win. I'm like, well, Jamie, you gotta win things to actually win. So they might not like us winning, but we are we're not winning.
SPEAKER_02There's a tiny bit of that, but then there was also just a tiny bit of losing. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Well, I mean, for those listening, obviously Matea and Caleb, they've won the last two years of camp. So they were coming back as targets on the targets. And on the first day, I could feel it. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03I'm like, Wow, yeah.
SPEAKER_05I'm on the team to beat.
SPEAKER_03Well, there was another church that came up to one of our students, and they were like, so you guys, I heard you guys like have like uh what was it, like military training, like military training for camp. And I was like, oh well, I guess that's how we're gonna start this year. Mega church.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I was like, when the girls told me that, I was like, Yeah, you should tell them we do tryouts and not all the kids make it to camp. We're like, you didn't make the cut for camp. Like you're not.
SPEAKER_04That's something we don't do that just so everyone knows. I feel like everyone should have won just because of Katie's decorations. Everyone should have won. Oh, I don't want to talk about the room.
SPEAKER_05I get it.
SPEAKER_04Her room was decorated so my room looked cute. So good.
SPEAKER_05Guys, I'll be honest with you, I am just very impressed that Casey loves camp so much because as a teenager, she did not have the same passion.
SPEAKER_02That is not true. You know what? You're thinking of overnights.
SPEAKER_05I did not like eating the squid.
SPEAKER_02I was on the front scene, she was gathering all the girls. She's like hitting the channel. She loves it. She's yelling the cheers. It's the one time of year I'm um competitive once a year.
SPEAKER_04It was a different side of you. Oh, yeah. She's like, go crazy.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I'm just gonna be able to do that.
SPEAKER_04Um but anyway, VBS was amazing. I knew I'm feeling actually like if I could get to this day, July 15th, I was gonna be okay. It has felt like since vacation Bible school till this moment, nonstop.
SPEAKER_05You've been living with kids.
SPEAKER_04Nonstop. Like the schedule has just been hecka. But anyway, VBS back there all the way in May. All the way back there. It seems like yesterday. No, it was not yesterday.
SPEAKER_01It was like a year ago. Yeah. Sure.
SPEAKER_04But it's been wonderful. It was wonderful. Like the team was amazing. The amount of kids that came out was amazing. Yeah. Um, and then the amount of kids that went to breakaway, one life awesome. Like it just felt like a really good thing.
SPEAKER_05Maybe real quick, just share your favorite moment. And then, too, for everyone listening, if if uh why you should send your kid to either you know be a part of VBS, team camp. Obviously, One Life's a little different, you know.
SPEAKER_04But my favorite moment was working with Caleb and Matea at One Life Camp. Oh, yeah. Like we just felt so professional. I was like, man, we kind of know what we're doing here. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05I heard it was legit.
SPEAKER_04It was legit. But favorite moment, you guys, maybe you go first. I might need a minute.
SPEAKER_05Favorite moment or why someone like should send their kid to either team camp or something. I'm gonna tell you why you should send your kids to team. The why. Give us the why.
SPEAKER_04If you want your kids to love Jesus and like this is important to you, then you need to send them with kids who are pursuing Jesus as well. So good. You know, so like sports camp, okay, yeah, great. But like, what is my ultimate goal for my kid in life? Then surround them, set them up for success with that. And I'll tell you honestly, like, I would have been the kid who I mean, I would the first time I went to camp, I was in my 40s. You made me go to camp, Pastor Sean. I know. You were like, you and Jeff need to go to camp. We're like new campaigns. I was begging. We don't know that. We don't do that quite.
SPEAKER_05But Casey and I were the first ones to go to camp here. I think I think you were coming with me. I well no, it might be I was thinking you came even with me with teen camp before.
SPEAKER_02I was purple capped in that year. I dyed my hair purple and it failed.
SPEAKER_05You were actually even on status.
SPEAKER_02Of course it failed. You have black hair. I understand that, Jody, but the hair lady didn't tell me that. She just tried anyway.
SPEAKER_04No. Anyway, it it would it's important just because of camaraderie, friendships, and like if you want that deep connection, you gotta play together.
SPEAKER_05I mean, you get uh which I'll I'll answer after. Who else? Why or why or what? What's your what was your favorite if you have one and or why should we send kids?
SPEAKER_03Well, I was just gonna say what I saw this year, and what I've ex I've experienced by going to camp is the bond that you have with the youth. And like, I mean, it's just like you spend a whole week with each other, and it's like people that you don't think you would bond with. It's kind of a force moment sometimes that no, I see what you're saying. And then you get to know who they actually are, and you're like, oh, they're actually cool. So I love seeing like kids that they wouldn't and from different schools too. We have Freeburg, Columbia Waterloo.
SPEAKER_01All over.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, Brother Bell. Yes, and it's just beautiful. Then now they're like collected. And it's yeah.
SPEAKER_04And it builds relational equity for like the rest of the year.
SPEAKER_03Oh, yeah. Because they're experiencing a spiritual thing together. Yeah. Like that's something that brings people closer.
SPEAKER_05You're able to cover so much ground in five days that you can never cur you can never collectively, you know, do in one night at youth group or one morning on a Sunday morning. So yeah, it's incredible.
SPEAKER_02I had two girls in my room this year who I've known for years from here. And I've always viewed them as very sweet, very quiet, very reserved. And I learned this week at camp that they're actually best friends. And I didn't even know that. And so I had the two girls that I thought were so quiet in my room together. They were hilarious. Not quiet, not reserved, so funny and like such deep thinkers, so connected, calling each other out, whether it's an outfit or something spiritual, like whatever it was. Like it was so fun. So just to agree with Matea, you get to see real sides of students that you don't get in passing on Sundays. But also I what I loved about camp when I was a teenager, because I also grew up in a town, uh, but I went to church in a different town. Um, so I wasn't always doing my faith life among my peers at school. I had some Christian friends at school and I I stayed true. I stayed the course. But when I was at camp, it was like the majority of us were like worship and like talking about the altar time the night before. It builds your worldview of T, oh, teenagers are like living for Jesus in like a radical way, not just like, oh yeah, my family goes to this church or that church, or I I have a couple Christians in my class at school. But I feel like when I'm home, and then I also did, you know, convention and the other extracurriculars you can go to. But so then when you're home and you feel lonely at high school and like none of your friends understand, you remember being surrounded by a thousand other students that are probably going through the same thing. Yeah. And so I just think for them to see a broad, a broader picture, like it's not just me by myself.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, and I I would say if you're an adult, you should go to you should at least do one year at camp. Yes, yes, yes. Listen, I I don't know this. I I feel like this would be like my first year where I got to go and just be. I just got to be a part of the camp. And as an adult, guys, listen, it's so refreshing for your spirit. And so like, I loved what you said Sunday.
SPEAKER_04That was really sweet. You got choked up about it.
SPEAKER_05I did, like, it was so good for me. And I then I, you know, this whole week or this whole last week, I thought to myself, like, how can we create this experience for adults? Obviously, you can't take adults going Monday through Friday to a camp, but you we can do it Friday through Sunday because there's something that happens like when you get in a place for 48 hours or you know, for some time, like three solid days with a group of other believers, and you just allow God to do. And there's just a lot of things that get removed, a lot of things that you struggle with that change. And I'm thinking, man, why did why do we stop doing this with teenagers with at teenagers? Why are we not doing this uh collectively with adults, like outside of just a Sunday morning service? You know what I mean? We need to have more environments. Well, I absolutely loved it. I've already signed up for next year. Yeah, you guys. For team camp, Jody. For team camp. Well, guess what? I just realized. And I want the juniors and seniors, but it's okay because they've got to camp with us next year. Oh, she knows.
SPEAKER_04I wonder if her mom wants to be a counselor.
SPEAKER_05Oh.
SPEAKER_02Oh no.
SPEAKER_05On the spot during the podcast, it smells like a great place for a transition.
SPEAKER_02She's excited because she thinks Natalie is fine. I always thought that her first year able to go would be Nattie's first year old enough to go as a helper.
SPEAKER_05Is that true? That's the year that Natty's gonna go.
SPEAKER_02She'll be s well, she'll be seventeen. She'll be seventeen.
SPEAKER_05She'll be close.
SPEAKER_02Oh no, she'd be right before 17. Yeah. I mean, when I go desperate, I pulled it seventeen because I'm not sure. Her aunt works in the district office.
SPEAKER_05I think we could pull some strings.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, we could pull
Calling Pastor Kelly From Jamaica
SPEAKER_02the strings. Anyway.
SPEAKER_05Anyways, we camp was incredible. So glad our church does camp. And that we have so many kids going. But so we're in 1 Corinthians. Nine. Uh so nine. So chapter 8, chapter 9, and chapter 10 kind of work together and uh in regards to talking about like freedom and rights. And so let's dive into chapter 9. Uh but we're I'm excited about this Sunday. Uh the person that just taught, because this obviously comes out on Monday, would be Kelly. Oh. So she just got done teaching, and uh, I'm sure she killed it. And so I thought it'd be good. She's actually I'm sure you guys all know this, but she's uh with her daughter on vacation. It's a senior trip, right? Yes, senior trip in Jamaica. So should we see if we can get her live from Jamaica?
SPEAKER_02We wake her up from a nap or something.
SPEAKER_05Let's see, let's see if she's studying and we'll call her right now. And so let's see what happens here.
SPEAKER_02How do phones work in Jamaica?
SPEAKER_05If you guys had phone headphones, you could actually hear her talking, but you will not be able to hear her if you don't have headphones. Oh, we should have. Hey Kelly, how are you?
SPEAKER_00Well, I'm fine, but guess what, Sean? I'm gonna send you a picture.
SPEAKER_05No, no, no, hold up just a second, real quick. You are live on the podcast. I want to make sure you know that before you start sending me pictures.
SPEAKER_00I'm gonna send you a picture. There's a guy in the pool that looks like a very rough Sean Williamson. Send me a picture. We'll link it to the podcast. And you know, so like I have there's people here that go to our church. I'm like, you guys, look at that guy. Doesn't he look like a rough Sean Williamson?
SPEAKER_05I feel like all summer everyone's been sending me pictures of me from camps.
SPEAKER_00I am not in Jamaica rough, rough years. Oh no. I'll send you a photo. Even the way he throws a football.
SPEAKER_05I'm like, I think he's talking about it. You watch me throw a football?
SPEAKER_04Like you know what? We were in kids' camp. We were at kids' camp and Duncan said, Jody, look at that guy. He looks like a tatted Pastor Sean.
SPEAKER_05I got a photo of him. So I was like, Well, I'm everywhere this summer. I wish I was.
SPEAKER_04Okay, are you sitting in the sun preparing um and talking, thinking about chapter nine?
SPEAKER_05Kelly?
SPEAKER_04Did we drop a uh oh no, she's she's sending you the photo.
SPEAKER_05Hold up, Kelly. Let's see if we can get her back on. She she just hung up on us, people.
SPEAKER_04She can't do it. It's because she's in the phone. She doesn't know how to do the phone and send a picture.
SPEAKER_01Let's see if we can get her back.
SPEAKER_03I was a little scared at first, but she was gonna say, I was like, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
SPEAKER_04Did you get the picture?
SPEAKER_05I don't think so. She goes, I lost you. I know. Trying to get you back.
SPEAKER_03She's just on an island.
SPEAKER_05There we go. There we go.
SPEAKER_00Hello.
SPEAKER_05You're back. We lost you.
SPEAKER_00Oh, lost you. I lost you.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. All right. So are you ready to do this podcast? You just got done preaching, chapter nine. Everybody's excited. And so we thought maybe you had some insight on chapter nine for us.
SPEAKER_00Wait, are you recording right now for real?
SPEAKER_05Right now, you are on the podcast. It is recording.
SPEAKER_00Oh.
SPEAKER_05This is all on the podcast. You sending me pictures, you of me.
SPEAKER_00I cannot wait to send you. I'm gonna take a video.
SPEAKER_05I'm excited. I'm excited. So uh Jody just asked, are you like next to the pool studying?
SPEAKER_04I was like, listen, people call people in for podcasts all the time. Let's call her.
SPEAKER_00She's oh that's true. Yes. Yes, what do you want? So I'm in the pool, but I'm not studying, but I have my computer with me. So I can. There you go.
SPEAKER_04Not with me at the pool, but well, we won't make you hang with us the whole time. But if there's any something about chapter nine.
SPEAKER_00I mean, did you start already? How far into this podcast are you?
SPEAKER_03Oh, we've been talking about camp so far.
SPEAKER_00Oh, you're just chatting. We're just chatting. Who's in there? Who's here? Casey, Jody, Sean? Mateo.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I'm I'm actually my first She Wakes podcast. I actually had to schedule myself.
SPEAKER_00It is She Wakes. I mean, 100%.
SPEAKER_04We'll change the music.
SPEAKER_00Okay, so do you just want so okay? So I've already preached it, so everyone's already heard it.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, just give us something. Give us a nugget. Give us a nugget.
SPEAKER_04Don't give yourself a nugget this podcast after all. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00This is gonna be our um yeah. So it's it's obviously it's about our rights as Christians, and that we don't actually have the right to like impose them on people. But where I have already taken you is uh Lila. I think you can't think clearly on this. I cannot think clearly. Um you know what? I'll just go to where I end because this is the most important thing. I think that Paul Paul's life reflects so much how diligent he is in following the Lord because he had an encounter with Jesus and he kept encountering Jesus, and so that is like something that we should follow is if we've never encountered Jesus, we need to be praying for that. Like if we want our life to look like his, we have to encounter him because otherwise you can't follow something that you don't encounter and that you don't know about. So learning who Jesus is and then continuing to encounter him throughout our life.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I love that, Kelly. Continuing to encounter. So Paul had an encounter, but it wasn't just like this happened to me one time 20 years ago, and that's all I'm talking about. No, I'm continually encountering him fresh. Yes, that's beautiful.
SPEAKER_05It's very good. Well, thanks so much for taking some time out of your channel.
SPEAKER_00Hopefully, everyone loves my preaching because already thinking about it. Oh, I'm excited.
SPEAKER_05Yep, that's gonna be good.
SPEAKER_00So all right, you guys have a great time. Sean, thanks for taking our calls. She wakes. She wakes a bowl.
SPEAKER_05I made my first She Wakes podcast. I'm coming back. All right.
SPEAKER_00See you, Kelly. See you, Kelsey. And Sean, Sean Dibelginger is taking a picture of us right now. So I'm seeing the photo of them.
SPEAKER_01See ya.
Encountering Jesus Beyond One Moment
SPEAKER_05It's perfect.
SPEAKER_04That just got creepy now. That guy's taking a picture of him. Yeah, is that what she said?
SPEAKER_02I like how she said continually, but I would also add intentionally encounter, because I feel like there's a lot of people sort of maybe new in their faith, but they're waiting around until it gets serious for them, or like something compels them to go deeper or live different. Or like, I know we've talked about this several weeks. I just don't feel convicted on that. And I think Paul's whole thing is like encounter Christ intentionally stay there, pursue him, walk with him. And he's saying a lot of this from prison. So I think too, when we walk through the valley time. No, I know, but like a lot of the New Testament, he's like being beat, he's in prison, and he's still choosing to encounter and pursue Christ rather than those being why weren't those like his break? You know, like, oh, I'm in prison, this is a break. Yeah, I'm not on fire right now.
SPEAKER_04Not at all.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, so this is just obviously a continuation of the the second question, you know, out of the list of questions of should we eat, eat uh from you know, that's been you know, uh given to idols kind of deal. And then he goes in with an illustration of like uh him getting paid. And so, like, do I not and so uh he's obviously starts chapter nine with this thought, am I not free? Am I not free? And then, you know, what is it that we do with our freedoms? You know, we see he says, I do not do I uh don't we have the right to, don't we have the right to, don't we have the right to? And he's talking about I think it's him and Barnabas, right? Uh that's like he's saying, like, we're doing all this. Do you find it comical, like as you guys read through this, like he has to continue to prove himself to the Corinthian church? No, I know. So they don't like it.
SPEAKER_04They're also like embarrassed of him because he's not a polished, good-looking speaker like Apollos. And so, like, hey, our rhetoricians, like, they have patrons, they're not making tents. Like, you're doing you know, manual labor. Yeah, like no, no, no. The higher ups, they're like getting paid by patrons, they don't have to do that kind of stuff. And so it's kind of an embarrassment to them. And he's like, Listen, I am so free that I'm free to not get paid by you. Yeah, and now I'm not beholden to you either. So, like, I am, you know, you can't um take what is it, the the the word the saying when you're like you're not getting paid, so like you can't, oh I'm I don't know the thing. Never mind. You can't do it. You can't lose what you didn't get paid for. Like, oh, like our volunteers, you know, you can't fire me. You didn't even pay me. I feel like that would be a good thing for politicians. Right. Like they're beholden to so many people. And like they're getting paid under the table, over the table, beside the table. And so like they're beholden to strings attached. There's strings everywhere. There's no strings attached. Yeah. I'm saying these things freely.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, and his primary purpose for making sure there's no strings attached is just for the sake of the gospel. Right. This is his point. Like, hey, what uh what do I I'm free to do all of these things, yet at the same time I'm not gonna do all these things because my primary primary goal is that you get just the gospel and the gospel only.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_05And so if if I'm if you're paying me, there's potential that you you know, that there's like you just said, there's strings attached.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_05You know, and um, you know, kind of thing. Uh but other people are paying him.
SPEAKER_04Right. Not the Corinthians, though.
SPEAKER_05Yes, not the Corps.
SPEAKER_04You know, so like he is getting so he's not saying like you shouldn't fund your preachers.
SPEAKER_05Yes.
SPEAKER_04You out he says don't muzzle the ox. Like that guy's working for you, feed him.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, well, I like these. I mean, this is not necessarily the point, but I do like these side notes, like who plants a vineyard and does not eat its fruit.
SPEAKER_01Exactly.
SPEAKER_05I I still remember Jody, and I thought it was such a profound thought. And this is about if you're attending our church and you're part of the faith family, so don't take this the wrong way if you're listening. But I I'll never forget when you had mentioned uh we were talking about tithing. And you had mentioned you and Jeff were going to uh church in St. Louis Destiny, which is now uh I forget the name of it. Alive. There we go. Fully alive. And you were like, We weren't bought into Christianity yet, I think you said, right? But you said we are benefiting from the church, and so we are going to like pay it. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Like our gym fee.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. Well, I I had said to a group of people It's our church fee.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_05A class that I was teaching, Discover Life, and my wife is like, I can't believe you just said this. I'm like, but it's true, right? Like I looked at home and I'm like, hey, so any of you like live in your home and don't pay bills? Nope. Oh, any of you go to the gym and don't you do you go to the gym and work out and not pay for it? That's perfect. Do you ever go to the grocery store and benefit from the grocery store and not pay for it? Like now the goal obviously is that like that's we're not paying for a service like to be one with Christ or to be in Christ. Yet as mature believers, we understand that like this is part of our responsibility.
SPEAKER_04And as adults, we realize things cost money. You know, like I love the library, it's free. Well, not really. Not really. Freedom to go here. Yeah. But you're doing it to build the kingdom of God, not because it's a routine of the yeah. But what Pastor Shawne is saying early on, Jeff and I did not have the correct motives. We just were like we know this is a law. I'm Catholic. You're like, okay, I know I'm supposed to bring a tithe, you know, so I'm gonna give my one percent.
SPEAKER_01Yep.
SPEAKER_04That's like the Catholic way. But I mean, we did know about the 10%, but we were doing it because of rule following. Because you're like, we do love these benefits. We do like bringing our kids here. We do want our kids to have an alternative to Halloween. So we should pay.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. And I think as like to what you're saying, Mate, as we're this is not a conversation we're having with brand new Christians, but as you're growing in your faith, as you're becoming a disciple, these are things that you need to start processing and considering. They're not, they don't give you access to heaven. Our work doesn't give us access to heaven. It's only the work of Jesus Christ, you know, uh that gives us access to heaven. But why is it do you think that Paul used this illustration in regards to like is it well, I have the right to get paid, but I am not requiring that you do that. Like, why do you feel do you have any thoughts on that or no?
SPEAKER_04And that's a random question, but I don't know if I'm following your question exactly.
SPEAKER_05Aaron Ross Powell Like, so he uses the fa I mean he's using this illustration like this is my right.
SPEAKER_04I have a right to get paid by Trevor Burrus, I think he's saying I am so free. I am free to decline. I am so free and I love you so much, I will give up my freedom to eat meat ever again. That's how free I am. I'm so free that I can relinquish my freedom. I'm in charge of that. Yeah. No one's thinking about it.
SPEAKER_03At the end of the day, that does that doesn't matter to him. What matters is you in encounter with God and yeah, and and you look at the people who are not going to be able to encounter with God. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Like I'm most concerned about you, like where Shelly and I've talked about knowledge and love. A lot of us, some of us want to operate just in this idea of knowledge, yet and operating just in knowledge, like Paul his knowledge would be, I have the right to get paid. If I just operate in that, I could be harming you from m moving in the gospel, even though this is not a commandment, it's not a do-or-die situation, you know, kind of thing.
SPEAKER_04Which I think is a real thing. You know, like there's definitely people who think, you know, outside of the church and they look at church people and they're like, oh, well, they're just in it for the money. You know, so like and I I was thinking of that when I was thinking of Paul and being a tent maker and being, you know, uh an apostle, and thinking how they were embarrassed of him doing that, and thinking of all of us with other jobs. It's kind of like the same thing, you know, like I work in the salon, you work on a bus, Pastor Jamie is a is a soccer coach, you know, Caleb cuts trees. Like that could be embarrassing, but then it also shows like, listen, we're not just getting all of our money from the church. Like, yeah, we're not beholden to you. We actually do make an income, and it's you can't say, like, oh, you know, they're just in it for the money, where you see like the preachers with the you know, very expensive tennies or whatever it is. Yeah. And like they're just in it for that. Like, no, we're not. We're in it for you.
SPEAKER_05We're in it for you.
SPEAKER_02I also think Paul is always inviting people to live Holy Spirit-led lives rather than getting because we're always stuck in the weeds of like, well, I used to do it this way, or those that church is doing it this way, or this and this, and like what's right and wrong. And my brain is a little more black and white. I just want a list of what I I want a list of what my kids cannot watch. As a Christian mom, just tell me the no's and tell me the yeses and I'll do it. But um, and then whenever like, you know, a different family has different standards than I do, I tend to struggle with that sometimes. I'm like, wait though, like for me it's a no because of this verse and this verse and this verse. And I think what Paul is asking of me is like, yes, there's these freedoms, yes, there's all these options. Are you loving the body of Christ and are you being spirit-led in every decision making in every area of your life? Is it to honor him and to love people? And like we may land in different places sometimes, but if our aim is not selfishness, not pride, not division, then you just be as spirit-led as possible.
SPEAKER_04Like land his others led. I mean, he says that more than once that he is um doing things for other people. And I think it's so hard for us in this country because we are so, these are my rights, this is what you know I do, this is what I'm free to do, I should have this freedom. And I'm just like wrestling with chapter eight, chapter nine, chapter ten. Like, do I, you know, I do know the freedom that I have, but does me going to this concert, or me going to this movie, or me going like, how does that affect the people that are I rub arms with? Or do I even rub arms with people that it is affecting anyone?
SPEAKER_05That's so good.
SPEAKER_04You know, so it's like I think we're living such individualized Christian lives that we just it's not affecting.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, is the spirit of God leading us just to affect us, or is the spirit of God leading us to also affect other people? Like because oftentimes, like you said, we're just thinking about insulated. Yeah, I mean, I think even like Shelley and I, when we were really processing through the application of chapter eight, the only solution we had was our conclusion, because you didn't want to throw anything on the table, was what you just said. You have to be spirit-led. This is a spirit-led situation. If if not, like you really could like. I mean, I remember one time I was eating, uh, I went out for pizza with uh an individual that like very much follows, he's not like true Jew, but like very much follows Jewish culture. And my wife's like, You're getting pepperoni pizza? And I'm like, heck yeah, I'm getting pepperoni pizza.
SPEAKER_04I'm my right.
SPEAKER_05I'm free, it's my right, right? Which was is the wrong. That I'm in the wrong. That's not that's what Paul's saying is like, hey, dude, you're thinking about you. You're not thinking, you're not thinking about them. Like, I get that you know that it's okay for you to eat pepperoni pizza, right? But he's not there. Like you should have, you should have gotten, you know, vegetarian pizza. Yeah. Yeah, but no, it's my right, man.
SPEAKER_04Like I'm thinking when we were in the culture we live in, too. That's the culture we live in. Exactly. Selfish. I'm thinking when we're in India, you know, like the culturally it's different. Like we are free. I'm in shorts and a t-shirt right now. Well, if I want to like present Jesus to anyone in India, that is not gonna work. Yep. I've got to
Practicing A Spirit-Led Daily Life
SPEAKER_04cover my legs. I've got to cover although in that culture you can show your midriff, you know, you're a married woman. But you know, like what I'm saying, so for them, I'm going to dress the way they dress.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_04You know, as long as it's not gonna harm my own faith.
SPEAKER_05What what do you how do you guys answer this question? Like, you know, the the thing that you bring up, Casey, in regards to you've got to be spirit-led uh for this to like for you to process this to move forward in regards to yourself and other people. What does it look like practically? And I know this is a loaded question, but I know someone's answering the question, how do I move forward in a spirit-led way?
SPEAKER_02Well, I I actually got this from Matea, I think. It was you. I think you said you just started asking the Holy Spirit stuff throughout the day. Like, do you do you want to say here or not? And just all the time. And so I started doing that, and I got I got answers. Not all the time, but sometimes like I thought that was weird noise. I had asked I had asked the Holy Spirit, do you want me to say something to that person? I love it. And that I wanted to say. Oh I wanted to ask a question or whatever. And so I was like, Holy Spirit, do you want me to say that? And immediately Hayden had leaned over and said, Hey, we're gonna leave early. Like, let's go. And we left the place. And I was like, Oh, he said no. And so, but there are times like just throughout the day, and I forget a lot of the time. I forget, but when I re-remember, I'm like, oop, I forgot. I return. Holy Spirit, do you have an opinion about this right now? Like, whatever it is, it might be something silly, but I just want my brain to know that he can have a say anytime. Excellent. So that's what I do. I just start saying, You have a say in all of this.
SPEAKER_05Well, and I think of like Teen Camp, you know, I think Chris Stanley, he's one of the guys that spoke at Teen Camp, you know, and he talked about like this idea of like uh him and his wife talked about this idea of living in holiness, and one of the keys, and we all know this, living in holiness is to live as a dead person.
SPEAKER_01Right?
SPEAKER_05Like so and that case is like who's making the decisions? Is Sean making the decisions or someone else making the decisions? And so am I going through all of my life saying what you just said, like, Holy Spirit, what am I doing? You know, what am I not doing? And I think oftentimes we we think I've made the decision, I've given my life to Jesus Christ, but after that now there's a life of holiness uh, you know, that we're supposed to uh move towards not for salvation, but we're being sanctified, so we're moving towards holiness, and we can't do that without living a spirit-led life.
SPEAKER_04Which is where he goes in chapter 10, he talks about this word um koinania many times. Participation. Are we what are we participating with? Are we participating with you know the ways of the world? Are we participating with Christ? We can't do both. And so I want to participate. And that's the exciting part. It's not like I've decided to follow Christ's end of story, he'll see me in eternity. Yeah, I'm participating with him and the joy of bringing other people into this kingdom, which you know, the saying everybody keeps saying now, make heaven crowded. Like it's not just about me and I made it. Now the participation, the koinonia, like let's do this with Christ.
SPEAKER_05Which makes me think of back at chapter eight. If we're not participating consistently with Christ, we're gonna be doing things uh to offend our brother in Christ, which means we are now sinning.
SPEAKER_04Participating against Christ.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, 100%. Yeah, because I think so many of us, like I mean, it's part of why I'm like, I get down with team camp and I'm like, okay, we have to do adult camp.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_05Like because Sunday mornings are not enough. Like they're just not enough.
SPEAKER_04Didn't you tell me or Shelly tell me that they used to do family camp there?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, that was that long time ago, Shelly grew up like, but I mean, yeah. Which is larger than any team camp or interesting. Yeah. But like, yeah, yeah, yeah. Side note.
SPEAKER_02Well, and I think what if if you're listening and you're like, okay, Sunday's not enough, I can't go to camp, whatever. What I tell, especially I tell the worship team all the time, I'm like, we're not going anywhere in public that we haven't gone in private. And so don't expect some new fun magical thing to happen during Sunday morning worship if we all haven't cultivated that in private by myself at my house. And so that's not just for ministers and serve teams. That's for your, like, you're the pastor of your kids. You know, you're the pastor of your kids. Or yourself. Yeah, yeah, and yourself. Like, we don't influence you as much as you influence you. And so at home, at home, like have encounters, be ready. Don't come dry and hungry on Sundays. Be ready to share in like us blessing the Lord and I don't know. That's what I'm like, just do it at home. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03And then bring it here. That's what I believe like we need to do better at is like you need to uh feel the Holy Spirit the most in your home, in your car, than expecting something. That's what the kids at camp, I feel like, was so good. This camp, it was uh the sermons were very straight to the point. Yeah. There was no like not a lot of emotional pulling pull. Yeah, pour your heart out. And which there's time for that. But every year on Thursday night, there's like an emotional service. And the kids they don't wear mascara, the girls don't wear mascara, they're ready to be a sort of thing. They're ready for it. They're not a man. They're ready for it. They want it.
SPEAKER_05Boys, we don't have these conversations.
SPEAKER_02Oh, they do too. I two of them told me that they're not. They don't wear mascara? No, they've told me. Like, I haven't cried once. Like they were saying they it wasn't they're like, I guess I'm not getting it because I haven't even cried. And I was like, I haven't cried either. Like we talked about holiness. What are you talking about?
SPEAKER_03And it was, but I think it was so good for them to see of like, oh, you can feel the spirit of God without crying or without the emotional pool. Trevor Burrus, Jr.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, because how do you do that in your everyday life when you're driving on the street?
SPEAKER_03So it was so good seeing. And I had a student that she she was having like a couple weeks of just not, you know, her idea of like she wasn't feeling God, wasn't feeling the spirit. And she was praying. She was like um on her knees or sitting in a weird way or something, and her knee was hurting. And so she prayed to God and she was like, um, Lord, heal my knee so I can focus on like you and worship. And she said the Lord spoke to her and said, um, just get up. Like you're sitting. Like there's there's some things that I can put my hand in, but there's other things that like you have control over your body. She's like, he was like just stand up. And I feel like sometimes that's like us two that we're just like great illustration. Come on, God, like do it, do it. And he's like, open your Bible. Like pray. Do it. Yeah, like right here. You have a job to do as well. Like you have the autonomy to move yourself.
Run To Win: Discipline And Disqualification
SPEAKER_05On that note, can I read these verses and let's continue to talk about this? Uh verse 24 through 27 read this way. Don't you know that the runners in a stadium all race, but only one receives the prize. Run in such a way to win the prize. Now everyone who competes uh exercises self-control and everything exercises self-control. They do it to receive uh a crown. But we uh in uh imperishable uh but but we in an imperishable crown. So I don't run like one who runs aimlessly or boxing uh beating the air. Instead, I discipline my body and bring it to under a strict control so that after preaching to others, I myself will not be disqualified.
SPEAKER_04I'm glad that you brought that up because this is in Corinth. And so let me just preface that 2,000 years ago, you know, not everyone got a prize. So there were a lot of losers, only one prize. Yep. But they're in Corinth. And so Corinth has there's um or on that island, there's an Isthmus, and the that's where the Isthmian games were, and they happen every two years. And so you had to qualify to participate. You had to be free, you could not be a slave. So at the time of the games, you have to be a free person. You have to have trained for 10 months, you have to abide by the rules, you can get disqualified for unsportsmanship, you know, like conduct. Well, there'd be many people who would train and then get disqualified. And so Paul is saying, like, don't train, don't do this in such a way that you get to the games and you're disqualified. And this is a real visual image for them because it's happening every two years. It's only five miles from Corinth. And so I love like he's like seeing these people training for it and then walking away, not even competing. Don't do that.
SPEAKER_05Don't do that. And I mean, specifically what he's saying in this text is what disqualifies us is obviously our lack of discipline, but what disqualifies us is how we're interacting with other believers in the body of Christ.
SPEAKER_04Using abusing our freedom.
SPEAKER_05It's not necessarily how I'm sinning towards myself, but how I'm sinning against others. Others. Yes. Which has, you know, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Which I think we don't really think about. We think of like, I'm not gonna cuss, I'm not gonna steal. And you're like, no, you are eating that meat and you're sinning against your brother.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_04You're free to eat that meat, you're sinning against your brother.
SPEAKER_05Yep. Yep, so good.
SPEAKER_02Oh, a little plug, Matea and I are in, it was kind of happenstance how we met them, but we're in a Bible study on Tuesdays with women from First Baptists, which was sort of an accident. I I was met by them at preschool, and I don't know if we didn't know each other, we didn't know each other, even had churches or whatever when we now we're together. And I think that when you're thinking about, yes, our church too, but like the church of that we the unseen church, like the body of believers, it's good to have conversations. Like there are things that we see differently with the women that we meet with. And I my goal is not to, well, our goal should not be to prove them wrong and have our understanding, you know, like the way you observe different things or the way you think of different words in the Bible, like all of us have a heart to know him and to follow him. And I feel like young on fire for God, Casey. I wanted to convince all of my Baptist friends and my Catholic friends that they were wrong, so I could like witness them my way. And it's just bridges and stuff. Yeah, so it's maybe look for unique ways too to make connections. And I saw on Instagram the other day, this stuff makes me so angry, especially in the worship world. It's a guy, his whole entire Instagram page is picking apart theological errors and worship songs, and people are like, Yeah, my church sings this song. I hate it. And some of the lines, I'm like, okay, technically, yes, if we broke down that verse, that's maybe not exactly what it's saying. But the song in and of itself is not unholy. I just think we look to split hairs. We look to be offended about something, or we look to be like, oh, that pastor quoted that one verse wrong. Like that church is so it's a heretic church or whatever. I don't know. Like, just quit quit being a fan of failure. Yeah, we're talking about little sloppy wet kiss. Oh, I know. Well, that one's in there too. We that has even been a discussion backstage on our own team. People have we're all there's different camps of that song too.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I mean, I think one of the things that we need to start processing, you know, as we're listening to these three chapters is how are we denying ourselves to benefit someone else for, you know, the gospel being promoted. Trevor Burrus, Jr.
SPEAKER_04Well, I was thinking about, you know, Paul and Timothy, and Paul is telling everyone, hey, listen, you don't have to get circumcised. We're free to do that. That's good, yeah. But then he tells Timothy to get circumcised because they were going to be preaching to the Jews. So he's so free that he will do this to himself, even though he does not need to. You know, like that's how much he loves you. He's willing as a young adult man to be circumcised so that there's no barrier between us about you hearing the gospel.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. I just I I um chapters eight, nine, and ten, I think out of you know, all of all of the I mean, we're not all the way through the book yet, but like I've just thought to myself, like, as a body of Christ, if we could actually grasp what's happening in chapter eight, nine, and ten and actually apply it, like how big of a change. What what are the things we might see, you know, that we don't because we're so, like you said, Matei, we are so self-centered because our culture is so self-centered. Everything's wrapped around ourselves. And I'm not saying it's bad. Self, you know, self-evaluation is really good. Yeah. Uh, but self-evaluation
Unity Over Hot Takes And Preferences
SPEAKER_05in regards to thinking of people around us, uh, you know, we need to stop praying, Lord, you know, what do I need to change? It did. What do I need to change?
SPEAKER_04This is a very communal society. You know, like we're really not. And so for him to be going to be a very good thing.
SPEAKER_05But do you think it's because the old old world and new world are in this moment in Corinth? Yeah, like these two worlds. He's talking to Christians and these two things are combining. And so pagans. Yeah. Because I mean, you take a I mean, it's it'd be kind of a little thing like, I mean, obviously I don't um let's take a Christian Christian that duh uh thinks it's okay to drink alcohol, 100%. And I'm not saying that it's not okay to drink alcohol. But then if I have a brother or sister in Christ and I'm going to dinner and I'm like, and I'm like, hey, I'm gonna order a beer, but I have a a brand new brother in Christ that isn't that is freed from alcohol, has had an alcohol lifestyle. If I have that beer in front of them, there's a good chance. I'm like, dude, it's really okay. You can do this. Like he's gonna return back to his sinful life. You know what I'm saying? Like the bondage. Yeah. So I mean, I think this is what's happening between people that are like maturing in Christ and figuring out figuring out that, hey, not all these things apply the same way anymore. If I'm correct, right? Correct me if I'm wrong.
SPEAKER_04Well, I guess what I'm just surprised at is that this is a community, you know, they think of them, this is how they live life is thinking about the community, what's best for the community. And we don't live that way anymore. But Paul is spending a lot of time telling them to think of one another. And it just kind of surprised me because I feel like that's kind of built into their society already.
SPEAKER_05Aaron Ross Powell Well, probably I mean, obviously because like because of things are changing, uh there's it's causing lack of unity. And what we know, the most important thing in the body of Christ outside of the Jesus Christ is unity. Trevor Burrus, Jr.
SPEAKER_04So whatever's happening, he's like, all right, we gotta tighten up all the gaps here. You guys have forgotten your unity in one another.
SPEAKER_02Trevor Burrus, Jr. They were also very divided by like wealth too. Like they isn't is Corinth who gets in trouble for the way they're doing communion because they're like, we brought up a big fancy dinner and the happening.
SPEAKER_05100%.
SPEAKER_02I mean, even in pagan worship, a lot of that was tied to like family businesses and stuff too. Like you have to associate this way to be in this business ring or that. So it could, I don't know, it could be other status lording or something too.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. So you're right. Their business is booming as a city, and so they're probably feeling all of that too. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. And every ceremony, there's pagan worship. Every I mean, you don't eat a meal without pagan worship.
SPEAKER_02No. At all. That's true. Okay.
SPEAKER_05That's what's addressed to changing your whole world?
SPEAKER_02I can't remember which church. It's not Purgo. It's one of the churches, one of the seven letters in Revelation. And he talks about that, like not participating in these things. And at the time that would have meant meant them not even moving yourself from society. Yeah, like your whole you lost an entire family business. You know, don't have any income anymore. If you can't go to these rituals and participate in the goings-on, you can't. The social part of it. I can't remember whose letter that was. No, but you're right. Not there. We're not there. We'll get there.
SPEAKER_05Any closing thoughts?
SPEAKER_03I was just gonna say one thing I love about Paul and Paul's letters is that he's writing, like every letter is a little different in their own way because he's writing to groups. Yeah, yeah. And I think we lack that sometimes of we just assume everyone's like stories or because this person told me about this person, now I have a view. Instead of just knowing the people in in our church, outside of our church, and listening to their stories. So then you understand of, oh, that person has you know had alcohol problems. So I know to be careful. So I think just learning to um be more intentional with relationship, because that's the goal, right? Is like having relationship with people to build the kingdom of God. Together, Matea.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. I was thinking of someone, you know, um encountering one of our kids who doesn't know their background. And then when I was like, hey, they come from a really troubled background, it changes their whole viewpoint of how they interact with that kid. Now they love that kid. Yeah, because they have compassion. Exactly. Which is how I've been viewing Paul during these um reading this, is because you're right, he is their pastor. He was with them, started this church, lived there for a year and a half. He's writing this letter and he knows exactly who he's writing to because he cares for them. I mean, imagine our pastor Jamie, he knows every single person in our congregation and he knows their story and he cares about them story. So if he's writing them a letter, it's gonna be because he loves them and he wants to steer them correctly. So good.
SPEAKER_05Pastor Paul.
SPEAKER_04Pastor Paul.
SPEAKER_05So true. All right, Mateo, you want to close
Closing Prayer And Final Charge
SPEAKER_05this out?
SPEAKER_03Sure.
SPEAKER_05Day with girl.
SPEAKER_03Dear Jesus, I just thank you for this. Uh the time we had and this conversation we've had. I just pray for um anyone listening that uh anyone and everyone listening, Lord. I just pray that the Spirit of God will just uh pull on their heart, touch their heart while listening to this, that um that they will just become hungry to uh read more of what you say, not just hear what we have to say, but um search for themselves. Lord, I just pray a blessing for everyone listening. And I just pray that you you help us, um, Lord, just please help us be more intentional with our relationships. Um, give us compassion for your people, Lord. Um we just give you all the glory in Jesus' name. Amen.
