In this week's episode Pastor Josh sits down with Robyn brown to talk about Matthew 6:5-13. What does God say about worry and anxiety?
What's going on, y'all? We are back with another episode of the Bible study podcast. We are excited for this one. We have uh a scripture verse that we're gonna dive into in Matthew uh chapter six, um, verses twenty five through thirty-four. I was gonna have Robin read it, but so I'm gonna read it. Anyway, uh this is a good verse we're talking about um just being anxious and worrying uh about other things, and God encourages us in this. So we're gonna talk about it. Let's read it though, starting in verse 25. Therefore, I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body what you will put on it. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air, they neither sow nor reap, nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly father feeds them. Are you not more valuable than they? And which of you, by being anxious, can add a single hour to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow, they neither toil nor spin. Yet I tell you, even Solomon in all of his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so closes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you? Oh you of little faith. Therefore, do not be anxious saying, What shall we eat, or what shall we drink, or what shall we wear? For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Last verse in 34, therefore, do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. All right, Robin. Give me your thoughts. What do you what do you like? What do you don't like?
SPEAKER_00Sometimes you hear it and you're like, We know, don't worry about it. Like you always say, Don't worry, don't worry. But it's actually like, don't worry about it because you're supposed to be trusting God and have faith that He's got you. So there's no need literally, why worry when God's not worried? Like it's I don't know. It's always just why are you worried? Why are you? Which obviously there's deeper things to it, but I just every time I read it, I'm always like, yes, I need to. I'm clearly not fully trusting God if I'm this concerned about all the things that I know he will continue to provide because he's never let me down once. Right. Um and also in here, there's somewhere in this point, I think at least I wrote it down, about like worrying doesn't add to your life, it does nothing for you at all. Which is sometimes like you worry about something, you stress, stress, stress, and then it the situation happens, and then you're like it ha it happened the way it was gonna happen. So, what was the point of me stressing and not sleeping for the past three weeks about it? Right. Um, yeah, honestly, it takes away from your life because it just creates stress and then it's not a well and you're worrying about something that's not even in your control 90% of the time. That's also the thing of the control thing.
SPEAKER_02Like well, and I love how he compares um well, talks about birds, then he talks about the grass of the field. And like when I read this, I actually been reading through Matthew the last few weeks or this past week, and when I read this, the thing that stood out to me is like it's very true. Like, if you think about like birds, when you see a bird, like we used to have a bird nest in our garage, it fell, unfortunately, during a storm, which is kind of sad. That is very sad. But anyway, there's this bird nest, but they always it always they had everything they needed, right? Right. The mom we all would always see the mama bird and the data bird go leave and then come back with stuff. Like they were always getting what they need, right? Like they weren't worrying about it, right? And so if they provided, if God provides for the birds and if he does that, then how much more will he provide for us when we need it? Right, right, because he loves us, he created us in his image. Right. And so I love how he uses that analogy um in this on how much would he clothe us, how much would he feed us. And so being anxious about tomorrow or being anxious about whatever it is that's in your life, there's no point to be worried about it because God is in control and he's gonna provide us with everything that we need. Like it even says there at the end in verse 32 for your heavenly father knows that you need them all. He knows that you need food, he knows that you need stuff to drink, he knows that you need clothes to wear, he knows that we need all these things, and so he knows he's gonna give it to us. But then I love what this, and let's talk about this part. It says in verse 33, and I don't know what your version says, if you can tell us what your version says, but verse 33 says, But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all of these things will be added to you. What is your what does your version say?
SPEAKER_00The same thing, other than it says, seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you. Provide for you. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02See, and I love this because it kind of gives you um an order of what you're supposed to do things. So most of the time we like to worry about things, right? Right? That's what we all do. We worry and we stress and we panic and we freak out. We do all that first, right? But I love how this says, but seek first the kingdom of God. So first have a relationship with Jesus, spend time with him, pray about it, go to him first, and then he says, I will add all of these things to you, or I will provide all of these things to you. But so often we do it backwards where we figured it out ourselves, it doesn't work out the way we want it to. Then we go to God.
SPEAKER_00Where were you?
SPEAKER_02Should it come to me first? Uh but I don't know. Yeah, give me your thoughts on like verse 33 and how how's this applied to you in your life and how do you for sure.
SPEAKER_00I think also because I also wrote this down, it's like just talk to why are we not talking to God? Why not talk to the provider? Right. Who's gonna continue to provide? Why are we going to just we don't even go to anything else, we just sit there and let the thoughts go and go and go. Right. When it's like, if you would just come and talk to God first, just to get it out, because talking to your friend who can't provide it for you is not gonna do it. Oh, I'm struggling with food. Your friend, I mean, maybe they can help a little, but in the end, they're not gonna do everything. Right, they can't keep doing it for you every week. But when there's a whole provider sitting waiting for you, um, open to listen and can handle the burden of it, why not just go to the provider? And I think I've learned that just over the years of you sitting in your thoughts, me sitting in my thoughts does nothing. Like I'm just gonna continue to spiral because that's the worst part of it all. And then you're just now I'm digging myself out or trying to dig myself out. But yeah, just go into the provider and just go to him first, right? And let him let him cook. Let him cook. Let him cook. And sometimes it's like it this also reminded me when I I went to Vu conference and the like the service at Sunday, they talked about the daily bread and the importance of like God's gonna get you what you need today. Right. And we don't need to worry about well, how am I gonna pay for this in three weeks? Doesn't matter. That's too far away. It says don't worry about tomorrow. Don't worry about tomorrow. Like, literally, worry about did God wake you up this morning, got it, you had food at some point today, you got clothes on your back right now. What else is there to worry about today? Right. Tomorrow is a whole nother day that you don't even know what's gonna happen. Right. So what's the what's the point of it?
SPEAKER_02Literally no point. Yeah. Well, and I love how in the Bible too it talks about pray about everything, worry about nothing, right? And that's just another advocate for this of like we should be praying first and then worrying nothing. And I like how you said that you'd like sit in your thoughts because I feel like for me recently, like the Lord has been convicting me, and he's done this in the past, but like I like to pray about like the big things, right? And also I pray for my wife and my marriage, right? I pray for my kids, I pray for my ministry and the youth, the youth here. Like I pray about the big things. And if there's something big that our family is like struggling with, but there's not much right now, I pray about that. Right. But then there's like the little things that I'm trying to figure out on my own, like you know, money issues if we have any, like I'm trying to figure that out on my own, or something even at work related, like I'm just trying to figure out how to do something on my own. And I think the Lord has just been convicting me about that too. Like, bro, you're worrying about these things, trying to figure out how to do it, trying to figure out how to manage it, and it hasn't been working well. Right, you've seen it not work well, and so yet you're not praying about it, and you still won't come to me. Like, you need to come to me first, right? So I think one we could be in your heads like you. You said I'm in my head. For me, it's just like I just don't acknowledge God in these things, and I just try to figure it out on my own. Not that I don't think God can handle it or that he can do it. I just I'm just like, I'm gonna do it. Like, that's my motto, like not my motto, that's my like what's the word, like my lifestyle, I guess, is like I've always been a person that's just gonna get it done. Yeah, figure it out. Like, I like asking people for help, and if I need to, I will, but for majority of the time, I'm just gonna do it myself. Like, I'm just gonna get it done. I'm gonna set it up myself, I'm gonna do it all, like I'll figure it out and we'll make it happen and it will it will get done, right?
SPEAKER_00You know, because it's time and time again, it ends up working out.
SPEAKER_02Right, exactly. So, but that's always just been who I am, so I've gotta learn to like even in the little things, like I know God wants to help me, but I need to bring him into it. Yeah, because I can't just expect him to do it right. Right.
SPEAKER_00So and even like with little things, sometimes we take for granted for all the little things that we don't even see God doing in our life. Like it sounds crazy, but you naturally somehow woke up today. Yeah, and you're breathing, and you don't have to think about that. So if God can provide air in your lungs without you having to do anything, why can he not provide for anything else that clothes? Like you can find like some clothes, but air? Like that's insane. So it's just things of like and asking God like for the small things, or even God give me patience, give me from a point A to point B safely. Like we just forget sometimes that we don't have to worry about literal we shouldn't be worrying about litter or anything.
SPEAKER_02Well, I think even too, like most of these things are little things. Like I guarantee most of the people that are listening right now, they have food. At some point you ate today, you have something to drink today at some point, and you had clothes. So like you gotta think too, like with the scripture verse, we we see those three things, but what are the other things that you're worrying about? You know what I mean? It's like what you just said, hey, is my car gonna make it to work today? Is is my mind gonna lead me astray? Whatever those things might be, it's might not be physical items, but it might be like what you said, you're sitting in your thoughts, um, worrying about situations that don't even aren't even gonna happen, but you're worrying about the possibility of those situations happening, right? Like, what is this person gonna think? What is this person gonna say? How are they gonna react to this situation? You know what I mean? We're we worry about all these things that we don't think God cares about, but it's like, no, God's like, bring those to me, I'll handle the situation and I'll give you the words to say, I'll make that person react the way that I want them to react and all those things, but we just forget to do that because we don't think we need God for it. Yeah, the small things matter.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's good because I'm always like you just naturally you're just like, Oh, it's not that big of a deal. Or like the small, small thoughts that come through your head all day end up building like growing, like everything just piles and piles, and then all of a sudden you're exploding on something that right. But like everything God cares about everything that you care about. Yeah, all the small things, all the big things. It's He cares about it all.
SPEAKER_02Well, and see that's even for me, like one of the things I've been praying a lot more recently is the dad of two is just energy. Like, yes, I can drink energy drinks, but like there was one time, there was one time uh a couple weeks ago actually. I think I just I think the Lord dropped in my heart. He's like, You're relying on like energy drinks aren't bad, they give you energy, but he's like, You're relying on that, and you haven't even asked me to give you energy. And so I legit was like, All right, Lord, I I need you today. Give me some energy. And it was like after I prayed that prayer, like I had energy for the rest of the day. Like normally by the time I get home, I'm like tired, but you gotta play with your kids, you gotta take care of a baby. And it's like I had this energy that just came out of nowhere. Like, I didn't have an energy drink that day, but I had energy to like do what I needed to do, and so God will provide those things if we ask with a heart that is willing to receive, right? Right. And so I think this is a big thing that everyone struggles with, everybody deals with, you know, and I love how it just ends. Therefore, just do not be anxious about tomorrow. Right for tomorrow, it's like what we said, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself, um, which just tells us like, don't worry about it, right? You're you're gonna get everything that you need today for when you need it. And so um, I guess what's one thing, Robin, that you would want people to take away from this that they can be um encouraged with, but also how could we apply this? Like, what's a way we can apply this to our life, like daily?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I would say use God. Use it like he's here. Obviously, don't uh use and abuse to a certain degree, but like you have such a weapon that can just carry you through everything. So he's literally here for you, and he's on your team and he wants you to win. So, like why why which obviously life is just life, but why take those weird avenues that you don't even have to go down or trying to find the resource when the source is literally the stars made you like you're he's your best friend, he's your provider, he's your father, he's everything that you could ever want or need. So, like use him, right? Talk to him, build the relationship with him. It is which we say every I feel like we say this every day all day, which is just true. It's very simple. Talk to him and read your Bible. Just start I don't want to read five, just talk to him, like build that relationship with him so you can understand and learn his voice, right? And so then you can hear him, you can trust him. And I mean, some people are like, well, he's you felt like you've been hurt or whatever. But if you count up all the blessings that you have compared to the things that didn't work out, I can guarantee you there's a lot more blessings than you will ever have it, things that aren't great.
SPEAKER_02So yeah, just use them, talk to him. Use him, let him cook. Let him cook. As Robin would say. No, that's good. I love it. Um, thanks y'all for listening. Episode six of the Use Bible Study Podcast. We'll see you next time with a special guest named Libby. Libby.
SPEAKER_01Anyway, see y'all later.
