Luxury and Tranquility - words with /r/ and /l/

Today we’re back with our two consonant sounds of the season, /r/ and /l/, for one last time. It’s going to be quite a short one today, where we’re just going over some words with both /l/ and /r/, to really workout these sounds!

As with last week’s clusters, this is a great review of the two ‘l’ sounds, l and dark l, as well. 

Let’s start with some words where we have both ‘r’ and ‘l’ sounds, but they occur separately. As you listen and repeat, think about which type of ‘l’ you’re making as well.

1. Brazil
2. crazily
3. drizzling
4. frazzled
5. grizzly
6. larynx
7. luxury
8. mozzarella
9. pulverise
10. really
11. reflux
12. relax
13. rely
14. tranquillity
15. unrecognisable
16. unruly

…And let’s try a couple of sentences with some of those words.

1. We really relaxed in the luxury and tranquillity.
2. The unruly grizzly was frazzled and acting crazily.
3. We really rely on luxury Brazilian mozzarella.

And now let’s move on to some words where the ‘l’ and ‘r’ sounds appear together in clusters. These are always in the order /lr/ in my English, because if we find them in the order ‘rl’ that is always a non-rhotic r. The ‘l’s are also all dark, because they’re then appearing before that consonant ‘r’. Rhotic varities of English have plenty of ‘rl’ clusters, where the ‘l’ is light.
