The Clarke County Parents as Teachers (PAT) program is reporting progress in early literacy with support from the Ala Tom RC&D Council. The funding has helped families across the county read more often and build strong learning foundations for children through age 5. PAT provides families with high-quality children’s books, literacy kits and hands-on parent education to encourage daily reading. During home visits, parent educators delivered books, modeled reading strategies and showed parents how to make reading part of everyday life. “The importance of reading begins long before a child is ever born,” Clarke County PAT coordinator Donna Nelson said....
