Low voter turnout is expected in a special election on Tuesday, Aug. 11, to determine the Republican candidate to face Democrat incumbent U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell in the Nov. 3 general election. Neither Ammie Akin nor David Perry have held elected office. Akin describes herself as an entrepreneur, an educator and an advocate for individuals with disabilities. Perry is a retired pastor and ran unsuccessfully for the Republican nomination for a state school board seat. Sewell is seeking her ninth term.
