Aloha. Today's episode is sponsored by the Livestock Extension Group out of the University of Hawaii, Manoa College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resilience, the Center for Ag Profitability out of the University of Nebraska Lincoln.
SPEAKER_01:Aloha, and welcome to the Livestock Fala Ow, a podcast aimed to provide educational support, information, guidance, and outreach to livestock stakeholders in Hawaii and the rest of the U.S. We are your hosts, Mele Oshiro and Shannon Sand. And today we're going to talk a little bit about what's going on this month in our mini episode. And I think we'll start with some of our Hawaii program updates. So we just recently completed an online webinar series hosted by extension agent Yunwen Bostamanti, who is based in Oahu County, focused on poultry basics for backyard production. And any of our really our poultry producers out there covering some topics about poultry health and disease, selling eggs and food safety, chickens in your garden and environment. Our guest speaker, Dr. Gregory Archer from Texas AM University, was there to give us great information. He's a poultry specialist specialist with them. And it was a great time for us to really talk story about certain things regarding poultry health and husbandry and everything else under the umbrella for them. But the recordings are now available on the UHC Tar Livestock Extension Group YouTube channel. So there's three different uh series or parts, I should say, from that series. So go check it out. Um and you could reach out to Univastamanti if you have any questions about the webinar series. Uh this month, uh, we are also hosting another series online, and it is in work safeguarding Hawaii swine and building biosecurity and for an animal disease preparedness across our island systems. We hosted the first webinar series of this five-part and talked about the sort of introduction to the program, what the grant is about, and really what we are looking forward to in sharing in the different next four series that are parts of this webinar series. And one of the things that I wanted to share about the grant is that we do have a portion of it that we are looking for producer participation in it. And really the res sort of expectations if you want to produce, uh uh participate, you know, directly with the program, it's to help producers sort of build animal health support with them, uh, looking at different things as far as establishing a VCPR and having more access to veterinary services and resources that are out there with the participation. If a producer wants to participate directly with the program, there are some responsibilities or things that we kind of have expectations for. And part of it is just to attend the five-part webinar series that's going to be offered online. Um, and second is to participate in some on-form visits and the in-person workshops that's going to be conducted next year, early part next year. So it's, I think it's I feel like it's a great opportunity for producers that want, you know, sort of to make connections with veterinarians. There are two veterinaries that are part of our project team, Dr. Gabriella and Dr. Thomas Petsnick. And Dr. Thomas Petsnik has worked um with producers here in the States. He's a swine specialist.
SPEAKER_00:I think we've had him on here before, haven't we?
SPEAKER_01:Yes, he's been on his podcast. Yeah, podcast before. Um, he's actually in Nebraska. That's where he's um his practice is, but he is licensed to practice in Hawaii as well and has worked here as well as in the Pacific Islands on many projects with other extension specialists and agents in the past. So he's quite familiar with um the Hawaii system and industry here. So it's an opportunity to be able to meet with him and you know have a herd evaluation done next year as part of a participating producer, you'll have access to those types of things. So I will link more information about how you can participate in that project. Um, if you are a producer that wants that's interested, um, and you can always contact myself as well for more information. And Yunowin Bastamanti is another um co co-investigator on this project. So she's on Oahu. So for those that want to get in contact with her, you can also reach out to her. Um, and if there's producers that want to meet with us one-on-one in regards to the project and sort of what it all entails, you're more than welcome to reach out to us and we can set up a time to meet. So, as I mentioned, it's a five-part webinar series. We have completed the first part and it was just an introduction, really an overview of the project, and we'll post a link to the presentation that was given on that so you can review that as well and some information about how you can sign up to be a producer that participates directly with the project. So we have four more parts to the series. Um, the next, and it's gonna be every Wednesday in October from 5 to 7 p.m. Hawaii time. Uh, there's different topics every night, and it's sort of gonna be an informational one where we talk about the topics and the different things that you need to put together a biosecurity plan, uh, secure pork supply plan, and really the end is uh last webinar series is the U.S. SHIP Um Program, which is the U.S. swine health improvement plan. So if anybody's familiar with the poultry improvement plan, which they have, the NPIP, it's a you know, sort of a process where you go through to ensure um the safety of the transportation of um pork and whatnot through the state. So yeah, is it it's gonna be a work through webinar series in a sense, because e different webinar series is a different sort of information that we provide for you and then help you work through whatever papers or programs that you need to get to be able to use those, use that information. So I will post more information about that for sure in our description um for this episode. Uh looking forward to this. I think it's a a great opportunity for us to share and bring some expertise in. Uh, Dr. Gabriella Sai, who is our other project team member on this, is based in Oahu as well. So she is a local resource that will continue to be able to help with our hog producers in the state. And lastly, I think I have is the Hawaii Cattlemen's Council 2025 convention and annual meetings going to take place at the Marriott Wyalea Beach Resort on Maui, November 13th to the 15th. Uh, so if you have not registered and you are uh wanting to work more with the cattlemen and whatnot and learn more about some of the um beef information that's out there. We do they have cattlemen's college on the first day, which a lot of informational educational um presentations, and they will have a workshop that precedes the conference on the Thursday before. So uh that will have some live demonstrations. But I believe their registration is still open. So go check it out. We'll put the links for that there. And I one more thing, I guess there is also a reminder from um now called the Department of Agriculture and Biosecurity. Instead of Department of AG, they are uh DAB, right? Department of Ag and Biosecurity. Um, just reminding livestock owners that they must re-register their brands between September 1st and December 31st of this year, and that helps to protect their rights to their brands. Um, brands are required and used to identify livestock um to their owner and must be registered every five years. So uh there's the link in our description box on where you go to um, you know, regist re-register your brand or register your brand, period, if you have not done it um in the past. So I think that is all for our Hawaii updates.
SPEAKER_00:Nice. So in Nebraska and the rest of the West, as you like to call it. Um, so I'm gonna start off with things that are happening later down the line, but that you can go ahead and sign up for no matter where you're at. So Ag Smart Money Week is a virtual week in November. It's November 3rd through the 7th, and it's focused on uh ag finance, ag money, basically. That's why we called it Ag Smart Money. But we're gonna have various different webinars available discussing a variety of ag money topics, including things like uh projected farm income, estimates, leasing, cash flows, budgeting, income statements, all of that stuff. So, and that is free and open to the public. You just have to go to cap.unl.edu, pick the days you want uh and the webinar you want. And if you cannot make it because you're in a different time zone, I was like, you still want to go ahead and register because you can you'll get the recordings afterwards emailed to you. So um, so that'll be coming November 3rd through the 7th. And then livestock risk insurance webinars are available for free and they're up and out there. So if you're interested in the new WeenCalf risk protection, which is being piloted in the planes right now, uh all that information is available and out there as well as your typical livestock risk protection AFN um PRF as well. The egg budget calculator, the livestock version, is now available for free and to the public for use. If you want to learn how to use it, how to set up your own account and stuff, because right, getting started is half the battle on October 20th at 6:30 p.m. Central Time, that's 1.30 p.m. Hawaii time. There is a free how-to online webinar. There are also tutorials that are on the website. But if you want help, kind of like and you're going through this process, I was like, Glennis and I will be available and be online for however, pretty much however long it takes or until we're tired, one or the other. So that will be available October 20th. Online farm finance and record keeping program is now online for both Quicken and QuickBooks, as well as like if you're trying to figure out just how you want to do record keeping or how to do basic record keeping, that program is also available online. There are fees associated with that, but you can look that up on cap.unl.edu. Um, the one big beautiful bill discussing specifically those ag related topics and how they affect producers everywhere in the U.S. We have a policy specialist, Dr. Brad Lubin, who's very smart and has been doing this for a few decades. That webinar is available for replay for free either on the YouTube channel or again, you can go to cap.unl.edu and go to the webinar archives and it's up there. Um, we have this is our second, we're going into our second year for the Organize This program. Um sign up begins in October. So Organize This is just a program between the University of Nebraska, South Dakota State, and North Dakota State. You don't have to live in those states to participate. You can be anywhere. But it basically is focusing on getting our important life paperwork together as well as making sure that we have a backup person in case something happens to us and we cannot pay our bills, for example. Or, you know, I don't know about y'all, but I do enjoy my streaming services. Netflix is, you know, not sponsored. But I'm just saying, I was like, you know, again, if you have a family, they're gonna be awfully upset when, again, the electricity's got to stay on, even if, you know, Melee or I are taken out for a week or two or something, if something happens. So you've got to have a backup, you've got to have a plan, basically. Or what we are suggesting is having a binder in a specific location that you and whoever again is your backup know where it's at so that you can, again, so that they know where to go in order to be like, okay, we need to pay the utilities, we need to pay the water, we need to pay, you know, whatever else. So again, so that's kind of what that program is focusing on. That there is a fee for that, but you can again go to cap.unl.edu to sign up for that.
SPEAKER_01:So thanks, Shannon. Yeah, and you know, of course, we're always gonna have our full episode coming up this month in a couple of weeks. So stay tuned to hear more.
