The Insight Out

DISASTER RELIEF WITH FILIPINO BUSINESS ft. Ainna | E06

Jealdrin Madrid Season 1 Episode 6

"Would you rather get Ube Pandesal from the bakery, or the buns that your Lola has just made?" (Escueta, 2021)

Definitions:

  • Ube = Purple Yam that originates from the Philippines; earthy and starchy flavoured;
  • Pandesal = Common Filipino bread using local flour, making the bread softer from it's inspiration, the French baguette;
  • Lola = Tagalog term for 'Grandmother'

Ainna Escueta is a junior-year Philippines university student that had returned to Hong Kong due to the COV19 pandemic. Her connection with her home country amidst its struggles, mixed with eagerness to help had conceived "The Phil-Kong Project": a filipino-for-filipino community that aims to support the social mobility of both Filipino and Hong Kong small businesses that are forced to limit operations. Ainna and I revisit how she started this project and explore how charity/ social work is facing negative feedback due to a skewed perception.
