Speaker 1:

You've likely noticed that I have taken a recent interest in promoting skin health and appearance. With the launch of the gut-to-glow oral Nutri-cosmeticae formulated something the world has never seen before an oral formulation with wonderful effects on skin. I've therefore been seeking out other people in the skin world who have novel approaches. I came across esthetician Rachel Varga, founder of the School of Radiance. Rachel advocates a clean approach to skin products, urging her followers to avoid synthetic chemicals like parabens and phthalates. And she is especially unique among her colleagues in advocating a holistic approach to skin health and appearance, counseling people on lifestyle issues diet, sleep, how to minimize oxidative injury to skin, even biohacking. These are typically outside of the practices of most estheticians. So in this episode of Defiant Health, I have a free-wheeling conversation with Rachel, who shares her unique views on her holistic approach to skin and overall health.

Speaker 1:

Later in the podcast, let's talk about Defiant Health's sponsors that include Paleo Valley, who provides fermented grass-fed beef sticks, bone broth, protein rich in collagen, organic supergreens and low-carb superfood bars, and now 100% grass-fed and finished pastured meats. And Biodiquest, who provides unique probiotics such as sugar shift to support healthy blood sugars and simple slumber to assist in obtaining healthy sleep Probiotics crafted with the unique property of combining synergistic microbes. Rachel, thank you for joining me. You know I've watched your work and I've been impressed that you're not just the usual esthetician, or a nurse for that matter, that you've carved out a unique path. So of course I talked to some estheticians as I've gotten more interested in skin health because of some of the products I formulated. But I've noticed that you have really carved out a unique path, very different. Can you tell me how that came about, how you got away from just the usual pedestrian things and into this more unique world of your own?

Speaker 2:

Oh, absolutely. Since 2011, I've performed 20,000 rejuvenation procedures, written research articles in the space of skin and longevity, as well as teaching other doctors and nurses and clinic owners how to provide powerful, consistent rejuvenation. I would say in about 2016,. So a couple of years into my career, and I'm a double board-certified esthetic nurse specialist. So what that means is I have my registered nursing degree and then I got a separate board certification as a certified esthetic nurse specialist. So it's kind of like an esthetician with all the health stuff too, but very different.

Speaker 2:

However, what I noticed in 2017, some of my patients were just recovering very quickly and I barely had to do anything for them. So if I'm going to think of a few of my lovely patients over the years aged 60 to 95, they would come to me with me either online, like this, or in the clinic, because I had people flying into see me from all over the world when I was 28 years old. What's unique about me, the way that I operate. Then I figured out what that was and we can talk about that, because it's very relevant to this too. But some people would just float into the treatment share or we'd connect online and I could just tell that they were already doing body, mind, spirit, energy work. They were looking after themselves, they had a beautiful family unit. Most of them had some type of faith and they would say to me Rachel, I would just love to look as good as I feel. And these were the individuals that recovered very quickly. So, say, for example, skin resurfacing or pigmentation reduction with lasers and things like that, they would heal in about three days, compared to other people that would take five to seven days. And I couldn't help but wonder what was going on. So at a pretty early age in my career, I sort of became a researcher and observer and now I've been able to put it all together, basically the subset of patients that just have the best results, the best skin, the best energy, the best relationships, the best life. They had a reduction of their oxidative stress and for you, being an expert in health, wellness, gut health, all of those things, it's a huge component because the skin tells us so much about what is going on internally. So if you have a week of treats or more alcohol, or more dairy and gluten and things like that, your skin will tell you in just a few short weeks. So if you're worried for going through more stress, you might experience some accelerated aging almost overnight. There's hormones as well that contribute to that, even hair loss.

Speaker 2:

And then I started to take a different approach to what is beauty, not just being able to recreate the foundations in people's faces with medical aesthetic procedures, but really get this transformation from the inside out and emit this glow. So a few months ago I was reading a book and it was actually an Ayurvedic text, and I clued into this whole radiance thing. Some people have it, some people don't, and they don't look like the traditional beauty, societal norms it changes every decade, but they have this essence to them. So in Ayurveda, to define radiance and what I love to study and help cultivate it myself and others will talk about my weight loss. That came with that too.

Speaker 2:

It's the electromagnetic projection of all of your other body systems. So body, mind, spirit, energy. Radiance is the 10th body in Ayurveda, so there's some deep things that go along with that and also some very practical physical things that I know you are an expert in. That I'm excited to get into. And then in my research I identified a few really key environmental things that impact the skin and those are toxins in air, water, lighting as well as electromagnetic, so wireless cellular radiation, what that does to the eyes and the skin, and of course, different microbes, pathogens and toxins like yeast, fungi, parasite, heavy metals and mold. So we reduce those, we in essence can reduce the oxidative stress and you get better skin and better rejuvenation outcomes.

Speaker 1:

So let's say you do I know you do a lot of individual counseling. So you've got someone, let's say, who's 60 years old and struggling with skin health and perhaps other aspects of health. Can you give us a sense? I know you can't give your entire approaching program in a nutshell, but can you give us a sense what that may look like, say, for Mary Jane who comes to you for the first time?

Speaker 2:

Yes, well, I do have another few clients named Mary Jane, and, in fact, one of them. She has done the work. She has a regular type of physical fitness routine, eats really well, and just notices that she's lost volume in the face. She's experiencing some sagging to the jawline, changes to the eyelids, maybe a little bit more dryness to the skin, a little bit of redness from sun damage, maybe some broken capillaries, and there's so much that we can do with that. But I always love to start with what can we do at home, first, to lay the foundation, and so what I would like to do in someone who's 60, which is primarily the age group I work with, 60 and up is start with the home care foundations, get on a really good, non-toxic skincare routine that I provide guidance with.

Speaker 2:

This isn't going to be what you would expect, though. It's actually really simple cleansing, moisturizing, sun protection, gentle exfoliation with products that are the final formulation is actually research to work. It's not just using something that's trendy or a new product that came out or something that people are being heavily marketed to. So start on two weeks with a basic skincare protocol, then start to integrate actives like vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, which I know you're a huge fan of taking internally. You can do that topically and internally, and internally is going to have beautiful impacts on the skin hydration and things like retinol but you want to introduce those after the foundations. It's like your gut health right, getting your foundations right with the foods that you're eating, to support your skin from the inside out as well.

Speaker 2:

And then maybe look at things like at-home peels, at-home dermal rolling and micro-needling which I've worked with and learned alongside one of the initial researchers on and then get into potentially some in-clinic rejuvenation and what that would look like would be very unique to the individual, based on their values, what they want to do, what they don't want to do and also their lifestyle right, do they have the opportunity to potentially be down and out and have a red face for five days or not?

Speaker 2:

There's lots of different options, so it just comes down to a customized approach, which isn't really happening in the medical aesthetic space. It's very cookie cutter. The reason why this is happening is the medical aesthetics industry is a multi-billion dollar industry and a lot of med spas are actually being bought up by corporate conglomerates and investors to diversify their portfolios. This is actually why a lot of you listening are seeing advertisements for specific rejuvenation technologies that, in my opinion, are not the best. In fact, the best you probably never even heard about, because those companies that make the tech put more energy and resources into their research and development as opposed to marketing.

Speaker 1:

The Diviant Health podcast is sponsored by Paleo Valley makers of delicious grass-fed beef sticks, healthy snack bars and other products. We're very picky around here and insist that any product we consider has no junk ingredients like carrageenan, carboxymethylcellulose, sucralose and, of course, no added sugars. All Paleo Valley products contain no gluten nor grains. In fact, I find Paleo Valley products among the cleanest in their category. One of the habits I urge everyone to get into is to include at least one, if not several, servings of fermented foods per day in their lifestyles. Unlike nearly all other beef sticks available, paleo Valley grass-fed beef sticks are all naturally fermented, meaning they contain probiotic bacterial species. And now Paleo Valley is expanding their Wild Pastures program that provides 100% grass-fed, grass-finished, pastured beef and pastured chicken and pork raised without herbicides or pesticides. And they just added wild-cut seafood caught from the waters of Bristol Bay, alaska. Among their other new products are pasture-raised fermented pork sticks, chocolate-flavored grass-fed bone broth, protein and grass-fed organ complex and capsule form, and new essentially electrolytes in powder form to add to potassium and magnesium intake, available in orange, lemon and melon flavors. And for the fall and winter season they've brought back pumpkin spice superfood bars. Listeners to the Defiant Health podcast receive a 15% discount by going to paleo valley dot com. Backwards slash. Speaker 1:

I'd like to welcome Defiant Health's newest sponsor, biodicuest. I've had numerous conversations with Biodicuest founders Martha Carlin, an academic microbiologist, dr Raul Kenno. They have formulated unique synergistic probiotic products that incorporate what are called collaborative or guild effects, that is, groups of microbes that collaborate with each other via specific metabolites, potentially providing synergistic benefits. They have designed their sugar shift probiotic to support healthy blood sugars. Simple slumber to support sleep. Ideal immunity to support a healthy immune response. Heart-centered that supports several aspects of heart health. And antibiotic antidote designed to support recovery of the gastrointestinal microbiome after a course of antibiotics. The Biodicuest probiotics are, I believe, among the most effective of all probiotic choices for specific health effects. Yeah, I don't think I've ever met somebody in the aesthetic space who does what you do, that is, doesn't just confine their practice to micro-needling or red light therapy or filler injection those sorts of things You're actually diving into health and to other aspects of radiance and the spiritual aspect of appearance. How did you get here?

Speaker 2:

I sort of fell into it. My mother's a nurse, and so I thought out of high school it'd be a great idea to have a very practical type of job, and so I did that. So after a nurse's, I was like I'm not quite done yet. So then I actually went on to do my medical school prerequisites and then thought to myself do I want to become a physician or do I want to operate in a way where I can really support people's skin from the inside out in a way that nobody's doing? And so I sort of fell into a bit of a leadership role. I had done the work myself and people just were telling me originally you're the first person to blend things like biohacking and longevity into skin and rejuvenation, and so it was very humbling when I kind of came to that conclusion.

Speaker 2:

But the other thing is I know we've talked about this as well that I was in two car crashes and when I was in the first rear end or back end or on my way home from the clinic, I worked in an excellent oculoplastic clinic for 11 years with an incredible surgeon. We saw a lot of skin cancers actually around the eyes eyes age first. So I went on this whole journey myself of what can I do to reduce pain, because I didn't want to go on prescriptions and things like that. There must be things that I can do to reduce inflammation. And then what happened from that? I got the best skin in my life and I noticed in my skin I was having to laser red acne spots and pigmentation almost every month, and now I haven't had a laser session in a year and a half. So it's like what's going on here. So I sort of stumbled on it myself through my own work in self-discovery of technologies and methods to reduce oxidative stress, and a byproduct is great skin.

Speaker 1:

Now. So, aside from the corporate consolidation of the industry, where do you see your field going? Is it going in the direction that you're kind of pioneering? That is, the combination of surface and exterior practices, but combined with other practices.

Speaker 2:

I would say it comes down to the passion of the provider. So some providers they learn the bare minimum for what they need to provide, whatever they're doing, whatever their tasks are. And then other people have this passion for learning wellness for themselves and for their families and for their communities. So where I think that the medical aesthetic space is going well, we're already seeing it. We're seeing these longevity clinics pop up all over the place. So I've been saying this for years probably about three, four years now that the future of medical aesthetics is a place where you're also getting your gut analyzed right and maybe getting an introduction into sauna use and cryotherapy and all of these different modalities, lymphatic drainage and energy technologies all in one place, and we're seeing this more and more.

Speaker 2:

I was actually at a grand opening with a medical aesthetics clinic. I loved the doctor and his wife behind the team. She's also a registered nurse and they see this too, so they're bringing in all these incredible recovery type of technologies or biohacking technologies into their clinic too, and I just think this is a win-win for everybody, because to get excellent, powerful rejuvenation, the best hair scannels of your life, great sleep, balanced hormones, a healthy gut people look at the superficial. They see things on their skin and it bothers them. And we're in a click society. We want fast action. We can go online and order anything we want and it's on our doorstep in two days. But some people see the real value in the approach of doing more than just a skincare product, doing more than just a laser session, doing more than just, say, eyelid surgery, but other things along the way too, which everything will have a percentage type of impact.

Speaker 1:

That's so refreshing because I'm so used to the micro-needling and red light therapy and this and that topical things. But you get into health Now. You made a comment last time. We talked about how you found that you are, I won't say impervious, but much more resistant to sun damage. Can you tell us about that?

Speaker 2:

Yeah, well, it's funny you mentioned this. I was actually playing pick-a-ball with some ladies earlier today. They're all retired. I've tend to get on well with people who are decades more wise than I am for some reason or another. I love to listen and gain wisdom along the way.

Speaker 2:

Actually, after the car crashes, I started to employ very specific protocols that were actually used to support our body to become resilient to things that were going on in the world. What I did was I bumped up my antioxidant use and, in particular, nac, q-satrin, green tea extract, zinc. I bumped up my use of Omega's collagen, introduced cold therapy for pain, things like red light and then, of course, the air purification aspects. What I noticed prior to the car crashes is I was actually in a second T-bone on my way to the beach to do cold therapy at sunset again for circadian rhythm and recovery. This was clearly a sign I wasn't on the right track. I listened to that.

Speaker 2:

It's on this jet-set lifestyle of going here, presenting there, flying all the time every two weeks. That's flying is really hard on your system. Once I slowed down and took really specific nutrients and reduced oxidative stress, I wasn't burning in five or 10 minutes. This was previously up north in Canada I would burn so fast Then after I would probably say maybe nine months after specifically doing parasite cleansing as well.

Speaker 2:

On top of all of that, I just noticed I could be outside now here in the South as far south as I am in North America I can be outside pretty much all day. Then it led me to this understanding that in my research LEDs, blue light, are actually more damaging to the skin right now because we're getting so much of it than UV light from outside. When we do all these processes in our lifestyle behind the scenes to reduce oxidative stress but, yes, do wear mineral sunscreen on the high-relisted areas face, neck, chest, hands. Every day I can be outside and enjoy life outside and not be so concerned about burning or pigmentation because my internal mechanisms are able to manage that radiation essentially.

Speaker 1:

Are you actually having your clients and patients have stool testing done?

Speaker 2:

This is a huge part. Gut testing is massive. I work with a lot of different companies, depending on what someone's needs are. I know you do a lot of this as well, because the gut can tell us so much, even from an epigenetic level, what foods we should be eating. Back then, I was also eating the wrong foods. I was eating a lot of bell peppers. I was eating a lot of kale. I was eating a lot of peanut butter. These are highly inflammatory. Peanut butter is a lot of mold in it. Actually, once I started to get quite specific with food choices after gut testing, then I also noticed a difference too, not only just with how I looked, but how I felt and how I slept and hormones and just how I was in relationships and communication and connection with others.

Speaker 1:

I've heard my audience is largely female, which always mazes me. It's the wives or female partners who prod the guys into doing something for their health, and they sometimes do it, sometimes don't. I've heard you say that you're starting to see that men are beginning to embrace some of the things you're talking about. How have you done with that? Do you have a specific formula for appealing to males?

Speaker 2:

Well, men don't like pain, I'll tell you that right away. They don't usually like to do things that require some downtime, so a red face for a couple of days. They don't like pain, they don't like having a red face. So there are some different approaches I like to take. But you know what I really feel for the men? Because women it's praised in our society to use beauty products and make up. Most of them are toxic because they contain parabens, phthalates, sulfates, artificial dyes, fragrances which is the irony of it. Right, women do all these things for beautification spray the perfume right over their thyroid, containing phthalates, which contains hormone disruptors. So the irony is not lost on me. And then men they kind of never get the guidance of how to care for their skin. So I actually really love working with men, especially in an online setting like this, because it's very discreet and then I can provide guidance of some things to do.

Speaker 2:

But here's the interesting part is that when partners a really great marriage is a partnership, it's teamwork. And so if one partner values looking good, having great skin, full hair, a great body, but the other doesn't, there's going to be a mix match of values as well as doing all this health stuff. If one person is more on this train than somebody else and they're not going to get it, they're not going to do it. There could be a mismatch of boundaries and I'll be totally honest with you. In a previous 12-year marriage I had this and I actually had a previous partner unplug air purifiers around the home during renovations in a 1930s home. So of course, mold and things like that were things on my mind, especially in preconception years, being very diligent with that. But really, my clients, they get the best success. They're doing it as a team with their partner. They're doing their at-home dermal rolling together. They're doing their skincare together. They're sharing their products. They're both eating great foods, they're both exercising and doing things that are fun with the whole family. The whole family is doing it and there's some deep psychological things that's also going on here.

Speaker 2:

A lot of ladies who are listening. You might feel also that you're the leader of the household and you have to do everything and what this does is actually age women. So there's some programming also that needs to be looked at. For deep, lasting beauty, longevity, great relationships, radiance is how can we really look after ourselves in the way that feels right for us and really go through this journey with our loved ones, take them along through the ride, share the knowledge, but not be like a preacher on a soapbox about it. I'm sure you've seen those since your clients too. Once they learn all these things, they just want to tell everybody about it, and so there's some ways to navigate that as well. But when you mention wives and partners and men, it's really great when both parties do it together. So I actually love to even do couples one-on-one guidance for at-home and in-clinic rejuvenation too, which is really great High success rate.

Speaker 1:

Great, rachel, and by no means, as you know, a skin expert. That's why I talk to skin experts like you, especially ones with novel ideas. My entry into this world of skin has been through this notion of nutric cosmetics, that is, sending things you take orally for systemic effects, including on the skin. So I was so impressed when you brought that up without my prompting. Can you give me some thoughts on how you manage this, the whole notion of nutric cosmetics?

Speaker 2:

Absolutely Well. Yes, we are in a highly novel time in human evolution. By the way, in case you haven't noticed, there's always something new coming out all the time, and when it comes to nutric cosmetics, I've actually worked with ingestible products and have done research for multiple companies, using photography to analyze the before and after. So I'm really looking forward to utilizing your product as well and seeing this for the benefit in my skin too. So what's really interesting about the nutric cosmetic space is there's a lot of really heavily marketed products out there, and this is really important, because it's always my aim. How can we become more conscious consumers and not buy things out of fear? And a number of years ago, there was a gummy that was on the market and it was dyed blue which, of course, is already about done and you had all these celebrities on social media marketing this all over the place, and a lot of people felt prey to this. But what happened was a third-party lab passed to the product and you'll never guess what they found. So it was recommended to have two of these gummies a day. Consuming two of those gummies a day went beyond the daily allowable limit for lead. Yeah, ironic, right. So we've seen a lot of these big beauty products not be so good over time. So that's why it's so key to work with third-party, independent, lab-tested, neutral cosmetics, which I know you're fully aware of, because there's always these trendy things right for hair growth, for healthy skin and nails but a lot of times they'll say manufactured in North America, but the ingredients are actually coming from across the globe, and I mean, I don't have to be. It's pretty obvious where some of the ingredients that were tainted with lead was coming from, and it was probably coming from the orient somewhere. So you just want to watch out for that too. And another piece of guidance is to get to know the people behind the companies. Is this like a multi-entrepreneur kind of thing, or is this a practitioner, or is this just a big company that wants to make a lot of money? So that's how you can become a more conscious consumer as well.

Speaker 2:

And getting back to specific neutral cosmetics, I love neutral cosmetics that contain antioxidants and omegas and support the gut, because then you're daily getting all of those good things, which for myself and my clients, just makes a massive difference over time. And in fact, in some of my research and this study was done concurrently with a surgeon on the East Coast I was on the West Coast at the time in four weeks we saw a reduction of redness to the skin. Pigmentation started to fade and the eyes actually looked less dark and less red and less puffy in four weeks. And I didn't believe the company's claims. They were like, oh yeah, it does all this. I'm like, yeah, sure, right, sounds to you good to be true. But then I actually looked at the photos myself and I was like whoa, these things are going to be powerful.

Speaker 1:

So part of your one-on-one counseling is to steer people in the direction of safe topical products as well. That is, in a way, from things I know I've seen reports of containing yes, lead, mercury, of course, parabens and fat phthalates and those kinds of things. But is that part of your process too?

Speaker 2:

Oh, 100%. So I sell about 250 personal care products, from skincare, makeup, hair care, grooming products, dermal rolling options, and so I really just started selling everything I used. And because it's hard for people to find Like, I do have a year of biochemistry under my belt as well, so I love NgenKem and OrganicKem and I love to nerd out on ingredients, and it is very difficult for the consumer to really glean which ingredients are snuck in that are not so good but are good. But there's something to also cover here, which is greenwashing. So a lot of products are said to be all natural or eco-friendly or green. You'll see this marketing every look now.

Speaker 2:

But the thing is with or chemical free. Right, they have a claim that says chemical free on the packaging. So let me break this down to you. Anything that's from planet earth is natural, and the last time I checked, petroleum was not great for the skin. So there's that. Anything that says all natural, forget it. The other one is chemical free.

Speaker 2:

We all drink water, right? I have a tall glass of filtered structured water right here. I didn't ionize it today. There's lots of things that we can do to water. That's pretty cool, but water is a chemical. But it's a good chemical. We want to avoid the bad chemicals.

Speaker 2:

So if you pick up a product, you look at the ingredients but it says chemical free on the front label. The first ingredient is water. That's a chemical. But most people say, oh, it's all natural, it's chemical free, it's got to be good for me. But I mean, the regulations on this stuff is pretty poor.

Speaker 2:

So that's why I love to help out and not only find clean products, but also products that are going to deliver.

Speaker 2:

So I primarily work with a lot of practitioner grade skincare products that the companies have done a really good job at creating an excellent formula that asks things like caleronic acid, vitamin C and peptides. But they've also researched the final formula to make sure it's stable and that the vitamin C isn't going ranicin and things like that. I'm creating my own behind the scenes too. I'm doing some really cool things with that. That's been a few years in the making, to do it right, do it well and not work with investors that down the line might want to say, oh, let's start adding canola oil into the product to make it have better margins. And I'm actually seeing canola oil in a lot of clean beauty products that actually in the past were pretty good, but it's just that's why I love one-on-one sessions, because I go through all my the products that my clients are using and give them the yay or nay of things that they should get rid of or that they can carry on with.

Speaker 1:

Rachel, thank you so much for sharing your novel ideas. It's really so refreshing. Is there a message? So my audience is mostly interested. They're searching for health solutions, not so much skin solutions. But because it's so female dominant, a lot of them really catch on, latch on to that skin message. Is there anything you'd like to add in closing?

Speaker 2:

Yeah, well, that's just it. I get people. People get drawn to me for the skin stuff. Little do they know I'm going to be unpacking a lot of things behind the scenes that they probably just didn't know about. So in closing I would reference my recent research paper that I wrote. I've written multiple papers, peer review, journal board member, all that stuff on oxidative stress status and its impacts on the skin. So my closing words is to not get overwhelmed with all the things you could do. It's just every day and throughout the day.

Speaker 2:

Take a step in the right direction to clean up your lifestyle, and by starting with purifying your air, reducing LED lighting which is actually why I'm wearing these glasses too as well as reducing the exposure to electromagnetic, so turning the router off at night. Actually, underneath this beautiful dress I'm wearing, I'm even wearing EMF protective shorts over my gut and on my bed behind here I have silver threaded blankets. You know, I don't hold my phone to my ear. I don't use anything smart, I mean smart technology, I think, is killing us these days. It's not making us any smarter, but just little things like that can really make a difference, as well as purifying the water and not drinking tap water anymore and then starting to do some detoxing, so all of those things can sound really overwhelming, but I do make it super simple to begin with, that and my research paper is open source, so it's great for clients, but also clinicians as well.
