F1 Hungarian GP: Get out of the Way!
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
The Formula 1 summer break is here, but not before one final dose of drama from the Hungarian Grand Prix!
This week, the team break down Lando Norris' first victory as the reigning World Champion, but it's Oscar Piastri's controversial clash with Carlos Sainz while lapping the Williams that steals the headlines. Was Sainz to blame, or did issues with the blue flag system play a bigger role? The team debate whether a race win was unfairly put at risk and whether F1's blue flag procedures need a rethink.
Elsewhere, we dive into Max Verstappen's spectacular overtake on Lewis Hamilton, discuss whether Formula 1 is at its best on circuits where overtaking is a challenge or where passing comes more naturally, and assess Aston Martin's impressive recent form. We also look at Williams' worrying slide down the pecking order and what it could mean for the remainder of the season.
To round out the episode, we react to the breaking news that Sepang is returning to the Formula 1 calendar in October and share our thoughts on what fans can expect from one of the sport's most beloved circuits.
Join us for all the analysis, debate, and plenty of F1 opinions before the championship heads into its mid-season break!

Welcome
SPEAKER_02Hello and welcome to Drive to Describe, a Formula One podcast all about the fantastic Hungarian Grand Prix. With me, well, not as usual. He's also whinging every single lap about how shit his car is, but yet he still comes second. It's Taylor.
SPEAKER_01Yes. Uh well, that's what you get when you drive a Master CX5.
SPEAKER_02Hello, everyone. It's it's good to have you back, friend, my friend. It really is.
SPEAKER_01It's good to have you back, James, and I would just like everyone to know that James has now more professional cat photos than Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen have combined world championships.
SPEAKER_02Professional cat photos?
SPEAKER_01Well, yeah, we're going to be.
SPEAKER_02Very good.
SPEAKER_01That's what it looked like.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah. Well, we I do have no kids and two cats, so my phone is just pretty much full of uh screenshots of Formula One and pictures of my cat. So yeah, other than that, we're good. And uh pushing the buttons and keeping everything um going as smoothly as possible as it possibly can. But I'm pretty sure he's about to unleash an almighty tirade against Carlos Sainz. It's Sage.
SPEAKER_05I will temporarily hold fire, but you are correct. He qualifies for numerous awards today.
SPEAKER_02I'm guessing none of them are in the positive.
SPEAKER_05Correct. Oh, okay. We're gonna beep, are we?
SPEAKER_02We're for a good start.
SPEAKER_01Taylor's about to crash. No, my car, my car beeps when I go over 120 kilometers per hour.
SPEAKER_02So gotcha. Gotcha. Responsible YouTubers. Yeah, yeah. I was gonna say the uh yeah, responsible, responsible side of motoring in the UAE. Anyway, the foot the Formula One race is run one and done with Lando Norris taking his first win as world champion this week. What do we think, boys?
Race Review
SPEAKER_05I mean, Lando was the fastest driver over the weekend, so he's a deserving victor. Um, there are other things that are of more significance to me from this race weekend in general. But uh I forgot what it's like to be invested, to be honest. I was you know, I I just watch the races for the for the fun of it. But when Oscar's leading, I I get significantly more emotionally invested. And when it's 1 a.m. in Australia and things go tits up, I do not react with the maturity of a 44-year-old.
SPEAKER_01Um yeah, I thought, man, uh for the Hungaro ring, this was a phenomenal Grand Prix. Uh, lots to talk about. Uh and one of those me and Sage might be in disagreement here, but one of those rare uh moments where Lando Norris said something on the radio and then he was in fact correct. Um so you know, it was it was pretty good. But all in all, um this was a phenomenal weekend for my boy as well. Um well, not a phenomenal weekend, I should I should paraphrase, a phenomenal Sunday. Um yeah, to see to see Max really fighting and he was he was just as shocked himself to be on the podium. So uh yeah, I thought this was this was pretty interesting. Lots to talk about, lads. Lots to talk about.
SPEAKER_02Well, James, what did you think? It was another one of those races, kind of like last weekend, where I was enthralled the whole way through and couldn't take my eyes off it, but it wasn't an amazing race. It was just you just it was one of those things that that promised so much, and it if if you could only have even a 10% chance of overtaken at the Hungara Ring, this could have been an absolute classic because there were so many people stuck right up the chuff of somebody else for for countless laps, but they just couldn't get past. And so um, yeah, it had the makings of being something absolutely fantastic, but it would it it flattered to deceive a little bit if you when I look back on it now. I was invested and enthralled at the time, but when I look back and and the actual action that happened was all through stupidity, not through great racing.
Track Preferences - easy or hard to pass?
SPEAKER_01Can I ask a question of you both? I think we've maybe never asked this question of each other. Um do you prefer a track like Hungaro Ring that allows for good racing and interesting racing and really pushes you, pushes the driver to take these risks when overtaking, or do you prefer a track like Spar where it's just madness and it's just full full speed, let's go?
SPEAKER_05Maybe something between the two. I I feel like it just lacked uh real How's how's the weather up there on the fence? Yeah. Um no, I like strategic racing. Uh one of my favourite races of all time was the 2010 Hungary Grand Prix where Seb got a penalty and then Mark went flat out for about 20 laps to build a pit stop gap to him after the safety car. So you know, I think it you do have to drive a really strategic, well-thought out race to make the Hungaro ring work for you. So I just like that it it produces a different style of racing and it is more a track for the cerebral assassins.
SPEAKER_02Maybe that 10% easier to make an overtake. I don't like tracks where you can purposely drive three seconds a lapse slower and people still can't get past you. And that and and the Hungaro ring is one of those one of those tracks. So it it's um like when when Lewis was on the softs at the start and he was all over Verstappen at the back, they just couldn't get past. I don't think I subscribe to that, James.
SPEAKER_05Um Max Max showed us you can pass.
SPEAKER_01There was there was a lot of Max in that, not a lot of Hungaro ring. I think I think James, just quietly.
SPEAKER_02Oh, I think um yeah, but then but then you could look at Lando behind all the time. He would have been well for the same for the same thing. If that was Silverston, he would have been passed and and away, yeah. Because it it it's it to me the and again you're gonna give me grief for for it being the the only British track on on the calendar, but the Silverstone is is racing perfection. It just really is, it allows for everything.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, well, we weren't there, so you know, each track being different makes the championship much more interesting.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, exactly right, exactly right. And you have to win on all of them if you or you have to be competitive on all of them if you're gonna win a world championship.
SPEAKER_05So that that's but I do I do take your point, James, because I think Lando behind Oscar kind of proved that as well, right? Lando definitely was faster. I mean, I'm not even gonna pretend to deny deny that's no question. Um but in any event, you know, it is it is a tricky track to pass, and you've got to be clever, you've got to be smarter, you've got to get a little bit lucky. And I it's all colours of the rainbow, right? Like I don't want every track where you can pass them down the hanger straight and job done in 30 seconds. Like that's not as there isn't as much strategy or thought, or even like working your way through how can I pass them, where can I make a move and and all that sort of stuff. So I I kind of think it it delivers something a little different. It tends to deliver a pretty good race. So I I take your point, James, because there wasn't a lot of you know what we would call quote unquote action on track. But at the same time, it was enthralling because you're thinking, huh, I wonder what they're gonna do to make that work. I wonder if Hadger's gonna hold them up. What how's this gonna all sort of come together? And I thought it was really certainly the most invested race I've had this year, but not necessarily because it was the best race, but at least um I was definitely invested in this one. It took Jamie Chadwick to calm me down after the race. Thanks, Jamie.
SPEAKER_02She does that to tends to do that to most people. Yeah, she's she's fantastic again this weekend. And we're probably not gonna have a commentary corner um this weekend, but uh she was she's just she's just a breath of fresh air in formal one.
SPEAKER_05This is much ado about nothing. But did you catch Martin's gridwalk where some dude pulled him up and said, I'm glad you're feeling better, and Martin's like, didn't know I was didn't know I was sick. That was so weird. Uh anyway, all right. Shall we get into our segments? Oh, I suppose we should we should I haven't even touched on where we're where we're sitting with the the championship. I'll put
F1 Standings - Can George bounce back?
SPEAKER_05the the points up on the big screen there. So Kimmy does extend his championship lead with a podium uh kind of out of nowhere. Uh he now has a 50-point two-race gap to Lewis Hamilton. Your boy George James is uh boy George. He's heezing on Struggle Street.
SPEAKER_02He just got unlucky again this weekend, didn't he? It's going to anti-stool off the grid.
SPEAKER_05Don't you say they run out of talent? Isn't that what you call it, James? Running out of talent.
SPEAKER_02Well, no, that that was a uh software issue that put him into anti-stool. He then maximised what he could get out of the weekend, didn't he? Pretty much overtook every car in the field apart from the top six.
SPEAKER_01I mean, he's in a Mercedes. I think George, the the this break could not come sooner.
SPEAKER_02At a better time.
SPEAKER_01For one for one GR. He is really I've never seen him like this.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I agree with you.
SPEAKER_01He's spooked. He's spooked. And um, yeah, I I hope for the sake of racing, he gets his act together on over the break. But yeah, well, he's uh he's really rattled.
SPEAKER_05I was gonna say before you before we carry on with the George conversation of this we missed it last week when we'd recorded the radio that he was playing on Sky Sports F1 Germany. He unloaded on his team. Unloaded, James. I don't have the audio ready, but I wish I did now that I thought of it immediately right now. But unacceptable, what the F. Like he was he was not uh sweater vest wearing.
SPEAKER_02He had just crashed a Formula One car, so I dare say the adrenaline was pumping.
SPEAKER_05I'll also say he was right.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, he was right. He was right, yeah. More of that. We will see what happens because obviously he had to stop in quality this weekend as well, didn't he? And they had to put a new engine in. Luckily enough, he has one of his allocation left, so he didn't take a penalty. That's right. But um it's it will be interesting to see if if this new engine, because he he seemed once he got going this weekend, he seemed reasonably well able to pass the the the car, the slower cars, which is which some people were struggling with. But um I don't know. We'll see. We'll see next we'll see when we come back from the thing. Hopefully, a good reset and a good uh break on a yacht somewhere will will do him the world of good and he'll come back. But the one thing we've also seen this year is is that points leads don't really you'd like to have one, but right now you're only a DNF away from being right back in the mix of things, and and DNFs are coming thick and fast this year.
SPEAKER_01Oh, how much a yeah how much a year has changed, James?
Papaya Rules - Was Oscar screwed?
SPEAKER_05Let's get to it. Let's get to our tweet length reviews of the race weekend. Taylor, why don't you kick us off and then James and myself?
SPEAKER_01Well, this is maybe too cerebral. Uh satisfied is what I was gonna say.
SPEAKER_05That's it, and one word.
SPEAKER_01Well, because you know, hungry, hungry, satisfied.
SPEAKER_02Oh my god.
SPEAKER_01No?
SPEAKER_02Nice. You've had too much time to think about that. He's back. I am. Um mine is a bit more um sarcastic, which is a huge surprise for me, obviously. Um is I can't wait for the Aussies to try and show me how McLaren screwed Oscar this time.
SPEAKER_05Well, James, you lead me in nicely. My tweet link for you is I've hated McLaren since the 90s, and it remains true.
SPEAKER_02So, all right, so we're gonna go here now, are we?
SPEAKER_05I hate 'em.
SPEAKER_01Sagy, come on.
SPEAKER_05Seeing an Australian and McLaren hurts my feelings. Get him out of there.
SPEAKER_01Okay, can I can I play the James card? I'm gonna play the James card.
SPEAKER_05I'm ready.
SPEAKER_01Okay, walk me through how Oscar didn't snooker himself this weekend.
SPEAKER_05Uh walk me through it. Uh geez. I didn't say it was a rational take. I'm not uh this is this is a deep-seated 30-year hatred. Uh look, I think Oscar's radio spoke exactly how I felt when he when he post-the Science incident, which we will obviously get to, was probably one of the defining moments of the race in any event. But I mean, they play these papaya rules more broadly to such detriment to just making good strategy calls. And if they had given Oscar all that information, hey, if we pit you, um, yes, we've got to worry about the undercut from Lewis. But here's my take on it from a McLaren perspective, not Oscar, because Oscar lacked pace. I'm not even pretending that's not the case. But if you're gonna play Fair's Fair all the time with everything, pit Lando the next lap. And if you're not playing Fair's Fair, like and Oscar said in his post-race interview, I kind of hope the team might go, you know, we'll leave Lando out a couple more laps because that wasn't fair to Oscar, which we've seen them do weird shit where Lando had a slow pit stop, Oscar let him through, like that kind of thing. Now would he said himself, I don't think that's fair or rational. But he hoped for it, and I guess they've kind of snookered themselves in the sense of their their propensity for fairness sometimes puts him in the puts him in the mud. Did Oscar know he was going to come out in a bunch of traffic? I don't know. Maybe I don't know. And and maybe he did make an informed decision, but on the radio he sounded pretty pissed that he ended up in a bunch of traffic because he said, I suppose you all accounted for that too. So what do you say? He didn't he wasn't fast enough anyway. So Lando deserved the win. No. My issue is this this team, sorry James, this team's insistence on this stupid fairness shit when look, if Lando wants to pit two laps earlier and Oscar doesn't want to pit in that moment, pit Lando. That's fair, isn't that fair? Because Lewis is on the radio with the full hindsight, right? Lewis is on the radio going, am I gonna make it to the end? So here's their Ferrari, like we just had to cover off Max, they're not thinking about the McLaren. Why are they worried about Lewis?
SPEAKER_01I've been saying this for years. Uh, I don't I don't understand the Pyre rules at all. So I agree with you here 100%. And I actually think competing garages, or at least, you know, you make the decision and you have that that dominant garage. I mean, for God's sakes, Lando Norris is the world champion. Now, I give him an asterisk next to that world championship, but he's still the world champion. So he's your number one. Like, what why? I don't I I don't understand why this is and he's just faster.
SPEAKER_05He's just faster.
SPEAKER_01He was way faster this weekend. Watching him behind Oscar was like it was painful. I was like, what are they doing?
SPEAKER_02Like he was amusing himself by driving off and then catching back up again.
SPEAKER_01It was almost it was so comical. I was like, this is a waste of everyone's time. And like, yeah.
SPEAKER_05And they were leaving themselves open to that having to make undercut decisions that they shouldn't have had to be making.
SPEAKER_01This is the thing, is they they left it so long that something could have happened which could have really compromised Lando's race, and that would have been completely unfair. I'm not the biggest Lando Norris fan, but he deserved this win by a country mile. And yeah, they they're just playing with fire. They did it last year, you'd think they would have learned, but especially when they're not fighting for screwing an Aussie.
SPEAKER_05Not on this weekend, not this weekend. Yeah, I can. I'm still angry. If Oscar's angry, I'm angry.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I just don't I don't see how McLaren they had to cover off Hamilton because it was difficult to pass on this on this track. There was only what three passes for meaningful positions that weren't people on tire dev uh tire offsets. And yes, it it was shit that he got put back into traffic and and all that kind of stuff, but and and it was so unlucky the fact that Carlos didn't have the blue flag warning on his steering wheel and he wasn't showing blue flags and didn't see him coming. And he just it it it just that's I'm gonna talk about that in a minute, but it's been pr it's been no James.
SPEAKER_05No, we'll talk about it in a minute. We'll talk about it in a minute. Yeah, we can get to colour signs. Oh well, we're we're gonna we're gonna have more colours. That was our tweet length review. We actually go through our segments. Let's do our our favorite moment from the weekend.
Maxs Epic Pass
SPEAKER_05So we've got our uh yes, yes, yes segment for our favorite moment, and I'll run with that sting immediately. Taylor, what have you got? What was your favorite moment of the weekend? We will get to colours.
SPEAKER_01So easy, so easy. Maxwell and Lewis. Holy Christ! Holy Christ! Yeah, what an overtake. If that is not the season, I don't know what is.
unknownIncredible.
SPEAKER_05I have the exact same one. James, do you have anything different?
SPEAKER_02Um, I have all the snaps and the mistakes. These cars are difficult to drive, but my god, they'll they'll bite you if you try and step out and line with them. There it's they take a bit of driving now, which is Formula One cars haven't done that in a long while. It's good, isn't it? So it it's um yeah, it's fantastic. It's um but um so you so you're really loving the fact that Max's push button overtake was the best overtake of the season? Dude, dude.
SPEAKER_05You just said there's no passing on this track. Come on. That was a ripping pass.
SPEAKER_01The line the line that he took was insane, insane. You're crazy if you think that was a push-button overtake. Oh, he ran out of battery. Lewis ran out of battery.
SPEAKER_05Lewis ran out of battery, Max didn't do a push-button overtake.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, come on, dude.
SPEAKER_05And Max would have no idea he's run out at that point. None. He just went for it. Other than the fact he was waltzing past him, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Waltzing past pro you're just trolling at this point. Yeah, you're trolling.
SPEAKER_05That was this is a troll.
SPEAKER_01There was no gap. There was no gap, and somehow, somehow Max made it. It was it was it was nice.
SPEAKER_05I don't want to.
SPEAKER_01In fairness, and overtake takes two. That could very easily have become the incident of the season, and instead it was the greatest overtake of the season. So, you know, uh Max complaining about Lewis's jink. I don't know. Uh whatever. To me, it didn't seem didn't seem like breaking uh moving under breaking too.
SPEAKER_05Agreed. I think Lewis was just going for the corner at that point. I just don't think he thought Max was coming. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I think he was I think he was like, holy shit, Max Verstappen's here.
SPEAKER_05Agreed. Uh
THE Carlos & Oscar Clash
SPEAKER_05I'm desperate to get to know Mikey No, so let's do it.
unknownYeah, let's do it.
SPEAKER_01It pissed me off, right, that George Russell was able to do what he did uh whenever a couple of races ago with the uh double waved yellows and single waved yellows, right? Right. But it was masterful driving and a man at the top of his skill and observation, and that's what I expect from a Formula One driver. Carlos Science does not need to have some kind of automatic blue flag system to know that Lando Norris in an orange McLaren is behind him.
SPEAKER_05You mean Oscar, but yeah.
SPEAKER_01Sorry, what did I say, Lando? This was fucked. Don't try and like don't try and explain it away by saying, well, they have these really fancy automated systems and it wasn't working, so now they're on manual blue flags. Yeah, guess how long they've been on manual blue flags for? Like uh 40 years? Fuck off. Fucking give me fucking excuses for Carlos Science. He was an idiot this weekend. Idiot.
SPEAKER_02You go Sage.
SPEAKER_05Oh, I will. Carlos Science is my no Mikey no. He will win some other segments as well because fuck this guy. He had, as Ant showed it, I don't care about his dashboard, there was five different occasions that a blue flag waved on circuit in terms of the electronic boards, blue flags constantly. He was radioed by the team as it's now come out saying Pias 3 is approaching, you'll get blue flags. There is no excuse, no excuse for a guy racing for 18th to find himself hitting the leader off track, the net leader, excuse me, at that moment. That is just so ridiculous. And yeah, Oscar's gearbox gave up in the end. But if if Oscar doesn't do that shit and he comes out a second in front of Lando at the next stops, because he didn't go through all this shit and his gearbox doesn't give up, he wins this race. He wins this race. And so the fact that a backmarker with five blue flags at that point just ignored them and then hits the side of the race leader and a guy of colour signs experience. Are you kidding me? This wasn't like a Franco Colapinto or a Nikita Mazapin. This is a guy you guys rate better than Charles Leclerc at different times through their careers. I never have. And every time he's involved in an incident, he sooks up and makes excuses every fucking time. This he's he's a recidivist. He does this constantly. I want to play a little bit of audio because I do want to get into um how pissed off Oscar was in this moment as well.
SPEAKER_02Our contact! Unbelievable! Oh, get out of the way, Carlos Sainz. What's he doing? Get out of the way, oh my god.
SPEAKER_00I had no idea if yesterday was. No idea. Impossible to know when I'm fighting a lot of support to know that.
SPEAKER_05Yes, it was that impossible to know. Give me a fucking break. This was deplorable racing. I'm going hard on him, but I mean he's too experienced to be this shit. Me too. Alright, James, over to you. Do you have a no? Sorry. That's okay.
SPEAKER_02In response to that, I just even McLaren came out and said, look, we know that Carlos Sainz is not a bad person, so he he didn't do this on purpose. But it's um it's unforgivable, isn't it?
SPEAKER_01What does purpose have anything to do with? Who cares? Like incompetence? This is what I do. This is you know what? This like we're all best friends in the paddock fucking nonsense. Like, no, McLaren. Couldn't say it is unacceptable for a driver of Carlos Sainz's tenure to make a mistake like that. Right. Like, why is that so fucking hard to say? Like, if Max Verstappen did this, if Max Verstappen was rolling around in 18th and then bumped into whoever, doesn't matter who, everyone would be like, oh, he's it's the red mist and Max just can't can't give up. It's Carlos Sainz. So, like, oh yeah, look at his luscious hair. Isn't he such a nice guy? Fuck off. Just fuck off. This is fucking incompetence. Like, I'm so angry about this. Like, he should miss a race, two races. Fuck you, Carlos.
SPEAKER_05Just off. Which does bring us to the next part of this. And sorry, James, I will come to you for yours if it's if it's any different. But sorry, James. A five, a five-second penalty is ridiculous. He ignored blue flags, he ignored team radio, he cut back across Oscar's car and put him off track. I'm sorry, Lewis Hamilton gets five seconds last week for a little understeer in traffic on lap one. The same penalty for the back marker not giving way for blue flags is absurd. So bad.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, um, no, well, mine, no, Mikey, no. It's and it wasn't just Carlos. There was one point there where Esteban Ockham was racing the race leader. It it the other that there was something wrong with the blue flags or something this weekend because it was across the whole grid. There was people just not quite getting sorry, having cat problems. Yeah, this card's relentless. For those not on the YouTube, James's card is determined to be on this podcast. Yes, yes, we had a couple of cat in uses. Yeah, um, it's there were there, yeah. Uh I think uh Ollie Behrman did the same, and there was a couple of times the Alpines were in the way the whole way around, and it it's just get out of the way. Get out of the way. The other option we've got is is is no blue flags. You have to overtake people.
SPEAKER_05No, don't, no god. Oh that's a disaster, James. Come on. That can't be a serious FIA for an aid's again.
SPEAKER_01The thing is, right, is and look, maybe, maybe I'm holding holding some of these drivers to a higher standard that's unacceptable. But you have drivers like Alonzo, Lewis, Max, who are driving around, you know, battling their own races, and then say, Oh, by the way, what happened in uh between P6 and P7? I just saw an incident on the uh on the big screen. You know, like there are there are guys with pure racecraft who know exactly what's happening at the track at any time, and then there's this. And you can't tell me that Carlos Sainz did not know that he wasn't racing the McLaren's this weekend. Like that that is just the the guy knows knows racing too much. And yes, maybe there were some technical issues, maybe the you know, whatever this system that they had, which was you know has helped them for years or whatever, but come on, we're racing, these guys have raced their whole life. These are supposed to be the 20 best race drivers on the planet.
SPEAKER_0222, but also well, 21 in Lance Roll.
SPEAKER_05Well, for those who haven't watched the race, there was apparently Gremlins, is what they've called it, in the uh flag system, the automated flag system. So the blue flags were showing on track with the Marshalls, of course. The blue flags were showing on the electronic boards without the number of the car that was behind them, but I don't think that fucking matters. And it wasn't showing on their dashes, they took them off because there were some erroneous blue flags appearing on people's dashes. But goodness me, like they showed the replay of Carlos. There was so many obvious blue panels for him to get, it's just it's beyond ridiculous. I'm sure Taylor will be back with us in a moment. He's disappeared off my screen. I'm talking about yours, James. But uh just you've just got a picture of uh Oscar's helmet. Just Oscar's helmet. But look, it was uh incredibly uh an incredibly frustrating situation, and I felt for Oscar, and there's obviously there is some uh I'm not sure if you caught this, James. There is some online prognosticating that this was a Carlando help help a brother out kind of move. Obviously not, he's just incompetent. Yeah. Have you noticed though, James? Sorry, just have you noticed Carlos has this habit when he fucks up of blaming everyone else.
SPEAKER_02I think that that's every single Formula one driver that ever lived, though, isn't it? No, he he's at a level that's just like just say my bad. Yeah, yeah, maybe maybe he he messes up more so he has more chances to blame other people as well. But uh it it's um yeah, anyway. All right, it it's yeah, it was crap and it's the Bullflakes in general were the guys failed and miserably bought a letto was another one that blocked uh excessively uh at one section of the and especially on a track like this where it's so difficult to pass, it it's um you you kind of have to rely on the backmarkers to have their wits about them and and get out of the way, which didn't happen a few times here, did it? Let's face it. So it's certainly yeah.
SPEAKER_05All right, let's move on. We've got our W14 letter of apology. Someone needs to apologize over the weekend, James, and uh we'll see what we've got for that one. Michael, this is total. Go ahead, Total. Uh Michael, I just send you an email. James,
Williams are Terrible
SPEAKER_05who needs to send an email?
SPEAKER_02Um, I've got Williams.
SPEAKER_05Oh I went a week early on them, didn't I?
SPEAKER_02Oh boy, yeah, yeah, they were terrible. Um, yeah, it's and although this B spec car from Aston Martin did not turn out to be their saviour, they got out of Q3 for the first time but still went backwards pretty quickly from there. Um Williams just the as you said last week, they've got away with a multitude of sins this year purely because of the fact there are two teams that are worse than them. That's right and quite how I do not know. Um is yeah, and and Alex Albon is just it's like a what's what's the word they use for just a player in a video game that's uh just like a a background character? He's just that he's a background character.
SPEAKER_05An NPC is what they call it, James. A non-based.
SPEAKER_02An NPC, that's what that's the word I was looking for. Well that yeah, um, he's he's just he's just there, he's not really doing anything in, is he? Yeah, at least Carlos Science is bashing into the leader of amount of people that he's there, at least yeah. Albon's not even yeah, Albonne's not even not even making a noteworthy. I can't even remember him being showed on the on the coverage all weekend.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, well, he was. He was he was shown after his quality lap where to your point about Williams, James Vows came on the radio and said, It was a good lap, Alex. The car's just all over the place. I'm sorry, why? Why? Yeah, sort it out. What is happening? Aston Martin have gone past them. Aston Martin might be the worst team on the grid since like Morussia.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Yes, Virgin Racing back in the back.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, yeah. Name your shit team. Yeah. They uh Yeah, yeah, yeah. They've been that bad this year, and they've just leapfrogged them. I expect them to leapfrog Cadillac, but Jesus Christ, what are Williams doing? Years, years of prep for this car. Big old fun noise. Yeah, yeah, definitely, definitely. Who gets a little win out of this? And I know that's not our segment, but Adrian Newey, there is some, you know, now it's the engine upgrades next at the sandwort. So that's but 16, a whopping 16 component upgrades for Aston Martin. Jeez, it it it uh it saved them quite a lot of embarrassment, didn't it? They are now not going to be talked about as the worst F1 team in history.
SPEAKER_02They won't be too far off.
SPEAKER_05For half the season, they were terrible. Um, I don't know if Taylor's gonna be joining us again. He hasn't bought the own from here. He's at work, he might be heading up to the you know sometimes when he hangs around. He might be in the toilet, yeah. Yeah, that's what I was gonna say. He sounds like he's in the toilet, but uh yeah, yeah, yeah. Anyway, he's uh he he will he may or may not rejoin us. Um in terms he just he just takes it, I can't get back in. Uh just try again, buddy. Um, okay. Uh we move on. You gotta do your W14. Oh god, it's Carlos Sainz. Fuck this guy. I'm unrelenting this week. Carlos Sainz is winning all the awards. All the awards. Uh yes. Well, the bad ones, anyway. All the bad ones. Okay. That takes us, James, uh, I believe, over to top five drivers. Oh no, Pusy. I know. We've got to do the PUSI. The Clive Pusy Memorial James hashtag. He's not dead. He's not dead. Well we hope. All right E. Who have you got?
Max's Complaining
SPEAKER_02Um I had a sneaky feeling Carlos Science would would show up a lot in this one, so I will I zigged when everybody else zagged. Okay, who you got? I've got for snappin'. What? Why? Stop fucking whinging. Are you serious? He did not stop bitching the whole way around. The car's crap, can't can't do this. My tires have gone two laps in, can't do this, can't do that, can't do what. Your second dude. Just can't like we all know that Former One drivers are whingers, and as a George fan, I'll I'll take on the chin the fact that he gets that that world-class Winger label, but they're all just as bad as each other. He did not stop bitching about the car the whole way around, and he was doing alright. So um, yeah. Pull your head in.
SPEAKER_05Okay. I your hate knows no bounds, my friend. Knows no bounds.
SPEAKER_02It just it didn't it didn't sit well. It's just pull your head in. It's yeah, your second. It's not like in a car that's probably the four fastest car on a grid.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, but you gotta remember they they they choose what they broadcast, right? I mean, we didn't hear George's tirade last week, so sometimes they go with what the people want, and uh Max tends to be a relatively popular figure. I don't know if you've noticed. Uh anyway, um my pusy is going to shock you, James. Shock you to your core. Really? It's colour. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Then it doesn't.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. I'd just like to add for the third time, fuck this guy. Do better. Uh all right, so we know your your deep-seated hatred of spoiler alert for you, he's not in my top five drivers. Really? Wouldn't have made my top 21.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Because yes, he wouldn't make you 22. Um
What could McLaren have changed?
SPEAKER_02so getting back to the your McLaren rant earlier. So is it is there anything they could have done differently? What what if you had the bet well now you have the benefit of hindsight? What what if you're his engineer? What do you do differently? Who are you talking about, Oscar? Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Uh, I don't know how much look, I mean, they're racing at however gazillion miles an hour they are, and the TV takes away so much of our ability to really appreciate that, I think, sometimes until you get, you know, an onboard or something. Uh-huh. I just think it's like, here's what we can do. And and the other thing I didn't even mention, James, is they worry about this undercut. This is the same team who's also pitted the guy in second first to assist with not getting undercut and then swap them back when appropriate. So the fact that they went with Oscar first is I don't know whether it was Oscar's choice. That's a whole different kettle of fish. I don't know.
SPEAKER_02I think that's it may be, it may be, right?
SPEAKER_05But you know, was he informed enough that you're going to come out behind six cars in in battling for position, you know, and and do you want to do that or do you want to you want to let Lando go for I don't know. I don't you don't you're not privy to everything, right? So, you know, but the fact that Oscar came on the radio and said, I don't suppose you factored that in as well is probably an indication he had no idea he'd come out in amongst so much potential traffic on on his laps.
SPEAKER_02On a track where it's terrible.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, correct exactly on a track where it's notoriously difficult to pass, and therefore these guys don't want to give up, they don't want to give up the spot in a position on track that's not particularly palatable palatable, excuse me, for them. So I don't know. The the answer is I don't know. The the bottom line is he wasn't fast enough. That's the truth. Yeah. Yeah, but I don't think I just wonder if they operate in a functionality that makes the most sense to get the best results. I don't always believe they do. It's just why I don't like them.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I I just don't I don't because Lewis, when he pitted and went back in, he'd just gone two seconds faster in that previous lap that that he pit on his outlap. So they they had to make a snap decision and and and that that was the snap decision they made. And and let's face it, if he doesn't if he doesn't get hit by Carlos, then he probably regains the place and goes on and wins a race. If his gearbox holds out. That that that's just I I don't think you can like you can give McLaren any grief for what happened this weekend. I think they they they did what they had to do. They had to cover off Mercedes, they had to cover off Lewis. Sorry, and they had to cover off. They didn't have to, they were faster. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. Oh Lando was. Lewis was in that same traffic. Oscar came out well in front of him. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Yeah, but it caught him up pretty quick. Yeah, so it's I think I think Lewis had a faster car this weekend than than Oscar.
SPEAKER_05I may grant you that he had a faster car than Oscar, but I won't say you had a faster car than Claren, if you will. Um Oscar missing P1 probably didn't help his cause for the weekend, which we haven't even talked about because they did the driver change when they got the young driver in. Yeah. That's part of the sport, it is what it is. I think they have to do no qualms from me there. I'm just saying it probably didn't help him come to terms with all the upgrades and everything in as fast a fashion as Lando. That said, then we've got news media here in Australia saying that he's been shafted because he got kicked out of the car. You just don't know the sport if you think that's a shafting. Exactly right. That's jumping. Exactly right. It's it's Lando did it a few records. Tentationist journalism. That's the way it goes. Clickbait bullshit, I think they call it. Uh James.
SPEAKER_02Yes, yeah, very true.
SPEAKER_05I don't think Taylor's rejoining us. He's having some issues with uh the the UAE. Yeah, the Chinese are quite money. That's right.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that's right. Yeah, deep cut that one.
SPEAKER_05Uh top five drivers, who's your number five?
Top 5 Drivers
SPEAKER_02My number five for this week is Lewis Hamilton. Um, I very nearly gave George one point for the drive back through the grid, but uh, even I was struggling to give him anything this weekend. Um Lewis just in that on that first in on the soft, he made a soft work and and was was basically glued to the back end of of um of Max's car the whole way around that first in and and just didn't let him out of sight and didn't give him a moment's a moment's peace. So um, yeah, it was was was one of those threatened to give us the a classic but didn't quite materialize because the people couldn't quite get past. But uh yeah, Lewis Hamilton number five for me.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, my number five is the guy who jumped off wholeheartedly last week, Nico. Uh Q3 appearance and points. So, you know, uh he's on the board for the season, so I don't know, whatever. Happy for him, I guess.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I he didn't didn't make mine apology as well.
SPEAKER_05I mean, he did he did all right, he was he was up there with the racing bulls who have been the best of the rest for a portion, if not all of it, with Alvin right there with him. So, anyway, it was a good race by Hulk.
SPEAKER_02And uh little note for the uh racing bulls as well is they were so busy racing they didn't realise Max was there and they were cutting him up and not letting him through.
SPEAKER_05It was a brutal, brutal blue flag race. Yep.
SPEAKER_02Yes, yes. Um, having said that, number four for me is the aforementioned Max Verstappen. Um don't want like the pass was great, don't get me wrong, but was a little lucky to inherit the position on the grid that he did with the two penalties that he kind of got double bubble on those penalties as well. So um, and as uh a great co-host who we'd be missing this week, obviously, because she's actually doing some real work for a change. Um, Jackie would say he it was a bit of a tootlin race, didn't really see him too much, but still good enough for fourth.
SPEAKER_05Fair enough, he's in your top five. It's all subjective at this point. See how that goes, James? You don't have to agree to besmirch someone's character over their selections.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, but uh that's it's there's agreeing and there's putting drivers in just purely to bring a reaction out of another person, is is that wait for my number one gets the reaction.
SPEAKER_05Number four for me is Mr. Kimmy Antonelli to get back on the podium after his penalty, so seventh to third, I think is pretty pretty impressive. Yes, he inherited Oscar's spot. Uh got a little lucky with you know, I don't know why Ferrari pitted Lewis. We can talk about that too if you want to, but I didn't think that was a necessary pit stop. He was what second on track at the time? Third, second or third. He was right with Matt. Third, I think. He's wound up uh what fifth behind Chuck in the end as well with the five seconds.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, because he gave his penalty five second penalty.
SPEAKER_05Like this this stuff could matter at the end of the season for the championship. Lewis is one of the guys in the running still, and uh it's felt like a faux pas. I like that Ferrari are being aggressive, I will say that, and I think they are. I I this was a balls up, not the right time for that. It was a virtual, not a full. Yeah, just keep him out, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, a little bit, a little bit too aggressive with their speed pit lane speed limiter as well. This was the third time it's been pinged for speeding in the pit lane.
SPEAKER_05One kilometers per hour, anyway. Um I didn't put Lewis in my top five, but yeah, he was he was fine. I'd say he was fine. He was fine, but yeah, uh number four for me is Kimmy. So you're number three?
SPEAKER_02Yep. Number three for me is Oscar Piastri. Um it's I kind of had to give him a bit of a pity vote for number three this week, is because I just felt so sorry for him. He he had a bit of the George Russell's about his little look of resignation that he had last that George had last week about him. So um, yeah, number three for me, Oscar Piastri. Um, very, very close to a very good weekend, but unfortunately, not quite.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I think it's fair to say until the point that he couldn't, he was maximising what he had, what he was able to do with that car, let's say. Uh my number three is Max Verstappen. I'm not that different to you, really. I think he had the pass of the weekend, obviously. And he just found like that shouldn't have happened. Lewis fell asleep a little bit, I think. But yeah, but I mean it did, and it's a great move. It's it's it was a great move into turn one. And by the end of the race, he was still a good few seconds ahead of Kimmy and these other guys who were faster than him. I think that's fair to say. Red Bull weren't even top three in terms of teams, but he's finished second, so he he's a guy that will find a way when given an opportunity. I don't think he did anything spectacularly, but in the end of the day, he was second and his teammate was down in seventh.
SPEAKER_02So yeah, you know, yeah, yeah. A little bit of a concern about um yeah, old Isaac as well. He's we were giving him big props earlier in the year, but he's uh I'm not that concerned.
SPEAKER_05I think he was used as a block after the first pit stops, and it kind of compromised his race. So I don't read too much into that for Isaac this week.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, my number two this week is Kimmy Antonelli. Um, same same reason as you he's he's the the boy just has something. Don't know what it is, can't put my finger on it, but he just has something. And um, well, now he's gotta be old-song favourite to win the championship this year, isn't he? So yeah.
SPEAKER_05Well, he's got a two-race gap at the summer break. So that's uh that is a that is a pretty handy handy buffer. Uh my number two, I'm gonna call an audible. I didn't have him at two because I was feeling infuriated when I wrote down my top five post-race. I'm gonna ease it up a bit. Number two for me is now Oscar Piastri. That wasn't what I wrote down. Was he your number one?
SPEAKER_03Yes.
SPEAKER_05Uh he will be on number two. But I thought he uh to his credit, he wasn't fast. This in fact, this season he's kind of reminded me of his rookie year, James, where he just didn't quite grasp the tyres. There was a few things that weren't quite working for him. It's a new era of the rules and the and the cars, and I think he might just be one of those guys who he just takes a little bit to find his groove.
SPEAKER_03Yep.
SPEAKER_05There's no doubting the talent. I think you know we all agree Oscar's hugely talented. Is he as fast as Lando right now? No. I mean, clearly not. Uh, but he led every lap he could in the car that was available to him. He didn't really put a foot wrong. It's not his fault that someone who's completely overrated at the back of the grid sideswiped his car. And uh that put him in a tedious position in terms of holding his lead, which he was unable to do, uh, as I think a direct result of that. He clearly had the ability to keep Lando at bay with on a track such as this, uh, to that point. And he would had his gearbox not given up and signs not sideswiped him, I think he wins this race. Uh, in the end, his gearbox gave up, so none of it matters in terms of the actual result. Um, but gee whiz. I mean, he he drove the best he could with what he's able to do at the moment with his familiarity with these with this car, which Lando's just got better at, which is who we're gonna talk about next, I I would imagine.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Um so we'll move straight to that. Your number one is, or our number one.
SPEAKER_02He's London Norris, but just before we get that with with the Oscar thing as well, is he's never driven a non-Ground FX Formula One car. This is his first time driving something like this, so it's gonna take him a little bit longer than than people that have driven in 2021 and before. So um, which all the people around him at the front of the grid other than Kimmy have done. So it it it's it's a new frontier, it's a different, it's a different world, yeah. It's it's um it really is for them. But yeah, but yeah, my number one this week is Lando Norris. He it's um if he doesn't have that snap of of oversteer and going into the new Hamilton turn, which is what it's called now at the Hungarian turn for. What was it? Car park turn or something was was one of them. It was ridiculous.
SPEAKER_05Turning school driving school turn or something.
SPEAKER_02Driving school, that's right. Yeah, just ridiculous. Um, but if he doesn't do that, this this is this is then potential grand slant weekends. He was that much faster than everybody else this weekend. That's true. He was uh yeah, and and as Taylor uh alluded to earlier, with the he he is famous for saying I'm faster, then gets in front and doesn't actually pull away, but he was he was rapid. I think he pulled 10 seconds in about eight laps on on uh on everybody when he got in the front.
SPEAKER_05So I I agree just I agree he's way faster this weekend. What I would say is there is an element of once Oscar was done in terms of beaten in that moment. There's I wonder how I'm not saying there's a big amount, but I'm gonna give it a uh let's say two tenths a lap where you're just like fuck this, you're just angry, you're not driving, you know, your normal style, you're just not present, you're pissed, and he was pissed. Don't fucking talk to me. Yeah, we never hear Oscar do that. So, you know, he he knew he knew he had a a track where he could do drive the slowest and still win the race, right?
SPEAKER_02Which we've heard a million times in this sport, and that's what he was on the way to doing until he wasn't, and so you know it's um yeah, the it it's it is what it is, but yeah, it is what it is. Lando was exceptional. But as as we said, we're we're we're we're talking about Norris here and not Piastri. You're right. Um correct. I reverted back, yeah, yeah. Yeah, but it it's he was he was imperious this weekend. It was it was Norris first and daylight second this weekend.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, Lando was the best driver of the weekend. It would have been interesting had Lewis pipped him for pole just to see how the race would have sort of mapped out from there with Lando on the dirty side. But these are all things.
SPEAKER_02And not got the penalty, yeah.
SPEAKER_05But these are all things you can't you can't relitigate. They are what they are. Uh he in the race trim, my god. I mean, he was just as you say, impervious. He was the fastest guy out there. Um, I don't love his whinging radio, but I in this case I I think I think it's there's some valid some valid feedback to the team uh in those. Uh in any event, Lando was exceptional. It's great to see the the the world champion win a race, which is yes, is always a good thing. And uh he is a likable character. He is.
SPEAKER_02I I it's yeah, I've I've obviously gone the gone the number four today. UK, yeah, yeah. The the Lando hat today, just of just a and uh although I say I'm a George fan, I'm a I'm a British fan. I I'd like to see all of them do well.
SPEAKER_05So it's you and Crofty, my friend. Dear Lord, yeah.
SPEAKER_02I didn't yeah, I didn't see it this weekend.
SPEAKER_05They are fucking awful to listen to when they're getting their pro-Britch earring on. Oh, it's brutal, really brutal to listen to. I may have been annoyed in any event. We
Sepang Returns
SPEAKER_05uh we are at the summer break now, but there was some big news. We are we are there's some big news over the weekend, which is the return, James, of the I guess Bahraisian Grand Prix. Bahrainian Grand Prix, Bahrain Sapang, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Malaysia uh I do believe well the great news is that that people that haven't watched Formula One since 2017 are gonna get to watch Formula One cars go round the grid, go round the track at Sepang in Malaysia, which I hope it's an absolute ball terror, like it always has been at Sapang, and and people realise what they're missing and then think, all right, we've got to have this track back on the grid on the grid permanently, on the calendar permanently, because it was just and is just spectacular. But there's rumours that more are on the way because obviously there's Abu Dhabi, there's um Bahrain, there's Qatar, there's the the makeup ones from Saudi and uh the um yeah, we'll see. Let's just focus on Sapang. It's um yeah, so there might be some more classic tracks coming back, which is good.
SPEAKER_05Phenomenal circuit, sapang. Uh yes. Immediately I I held in some flights on the on the weight on ticketing and what uh what they do with that. Malaysia is traditionally one of the most affordable, I will say, most economical tracks to visit. But that was different ownership, that was a different era of Formula One. I sincerely hope, given the lead time, that they do consider keeping the prices at a level that make it uh an exciting venture, let's say. Will they? I don't know. I don't trust this group. It reminds me of all the American greedy companies that just want to rake as much money out of people's wallets as humanly possible. Nevertheless, it's great to have the track back on the calendar. I'm I'm uh I'm super excited for Sepang, and we get a triple header with Azerbaijan, Barraza, and Singapore.
SPEAKER_02Barraja. I was reading some things the other day that um that Lewis Hamilton, if he gets poll there, gets the record for getting pole at Sepang and Bahrain at the same time. Does that is that how that works? I think they're still calling it. If he gets poll yeah, go on. Yeah, if he gets poll in this one, then obviously because it's technically the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia. So yeah, he he holds he'll then hold the record for pole positions at Sepang and hold the uh record for pole positions in the Bahrain Grand Prix at the same time.
SPEAKER_05It's weird that they're still calling it the Bahrain Grand Prix, it'll be in it.
SPEAKER_04There's a lot of money in Malaysia, it doesn't make any sense whatsoever.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, but I'm just I am happy that they've filled that filled that gap there. Yep. I think that's fantastic. So the biggest thing for Formula One though is uh if you weren't aware, it's because if they don't have 21 races minimum, they've got to pay the broadcasters back their fees to a degree, which obviously in a money-driven company, uh, they will not want to be doing that. So they're gonna want to make deals with that. We would have been racing around the car park in yeah, in Las Vegas. In Las Vegas, yeah Jesus Christ. If you're not sure, that's literally what they do.
SPEAKER_02Yes, yeah. But uh it it's it, yeah. If I wasn't going to um if I wasn't going to Austin three weeks after that, I would be I would be there with you holding in flights. How exciting for you, my friend. It I think it would cost me one wife if I decided to say, yeah, I can kind of go. Yeah, two weeks before. Yeah. Yeah. I've got I've got a bit of a uh travel heavy uh six months coming up as well. So if I tried to add in another trip, I think it would would push her over the edge.
SPEAKER_05You might uh you might lose you might yes you say you might uh might cost yourself a wife for the fun and fun and giggle of uh of going to a formula.
SPEAKER_02Well, she's very understanding, and I'm very lucky, but uh yeah, she's yeah, she'd kill me.
SPEAKER_05All right, we are F1 drive to describe you find us on the tickety tick tick tock, the Instagram, the YouTube, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, wherever you find your podcast. We are there. Uh
Where did Taylor go?
SPEAKER_05this has been me, Nathan, James Taylor's gone. He was here with us for about half the podcast. It was a joy. It turns out for those of you who wonder why he never returned, he I'll share because it's funny. His work in the UAE has banned the site we use for recording. Secondly, he didn't have enough data on his Chinese phone to rejoin us. Uh spend some money, you thrifty prick. Come on, come on. Deal with that.
SPEAKER_02That's probably what it is that yeah, you can only come on three times a year now. That's right. That's why he's never here.
SPEAKER_05Um, anyway, we have the mid-season break coming up. We'll probably be back to talk about this, that, and the other. Just keep your eyes peeled, obviously. Subscribe, uh, like, comment, all that good stuff.
SPEAKER_02Because comment comment the big one, get involved, and we'll um we'll be checking the comments every other day.
SPEAKER_05We want to know what you think of Carlos Science.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Get angry, yes, get amongst it. Especially if you're Spanish. Yeah. Come on, somebody come and it's got a defending.
SPEAKER_05Help us, yeah, help us. Call it Duolingo comment section. Let's go. Break out the Google Translate to insult me. I'll be ready. I'll be ready to say things, Capraan. All right. Yeah, yeah. Uh with with all of that said, we don't know any Hungarian words. There's no race to talk about, so see ya later.
