This week on the pod, we're gonna play you little snippets of conversations we had with Jackie that are from our YouTube exclusive video where she's playing clips, we're reacting to them, we're guessing what it is, we're talking about what it meant to Formula One history. So we are F1 Drive to Describe. Thank you for listening. We will play portions of what we're able to put on YouTube because it's a lot of video requirement and image requirement. You either have to guess what racetrack it was, what's significant about the video, when this occurred, how it might have caused a ripple effect through Formula One, but I'll prompt you as to what it will be.

Yep, well, he knows that because he's on his way in already. Looks like teammate Fisher Keller just in front of him. And I think that McLaren Toyota, there's the pulse to Yamano Trulli pouring into Pits. And just listen to the crowd. I'm open.

Winner stands. Two from Harris on pit straight. Will it be two Jordans and two Minardis? Some talk the Minaris won't do it. There's a Jordan. And ahead of him is a Minardi. So all the Bridgestone runners are going down to the grid. Kultar was making a late bid to let me go racing. I want to race. I'm prepared to take the risk.

That's the famous Indianapolis, I think it's 2006. 05. 05, where um we had what? Um Bridgestone and Perelli. Oh not Perelli. Um Michelin. Not Purelli, um Michelin. And uh the Bridgestone runners ran the race and the Pirelli didn't deem it safe enough to go around the corners at that speed.

And by Perelli, so you mean Michelin?

Michelin, yeah. Yes, yeah, sorry. The French tire company deemed it not Cowards not safe enough to go racing. And so they uh they they pulled all their runners and um we had the most farcical Formula One race probably in history.

I think it's um And that is literally the grid there. The six cars on the grid plus the safety car at the back, that is the grid for the championship race.

Yeah, so I think this this race, um this is a fun one to talk about because we don't often go down memory lane, but I mean uh the there was obviously the Ferraris wanted the points, they were the big stickler in in the weeds here in this particular scenario where there was talk of adding uh I believe it was a chicane on the bankment, right? Uh some sort of a slowdown moment because the tyres couldn't take the load. Um, and Ferrari absolutely know we've bought the tires at work in these conditions where we're not allowing that. And therefore, we ended up with this farcical situation. Not only was it a farce of a race, the damage this did to Formula One in the US market was massive at the time. Absolutely massive.

Do it, just imagine it happening now. You could just the the how it would be dealt with and what would be we'd we'd just it would just be diabolic.

It'd be tied up in lawsuits now because of championship points and cost caps and being out of race and whatnot. But it was interesting going through these clips and the voiceovers, and uh it was said in that clip actually. Coulthard was arguing to still go out despite it being a safety risk. He still wanted to go out there. So that almost goes back to the old days of we know we could die out here. Oh well, let's go.

I was gonna say though, you gotta consider like think about traveling from here to I don't know, for us it would be like Singapore, right? For them to get to Indianapolis from the UK. You put in all your practice sessions, you do your quality, you get to race day, and then they go, nut. Nut yeah, and you're like, oh what really? Well, I'd wanna I'd wanna go. You put in all that sweat equity, you want to you want to go racing.

And it was back in the day as well where the cars weren't completely foolproof as well. It was clearly, yeah. Yeah.

And it wasn't points to 10 places back then either. Only six. So it's not like Cool Fard could have done an Alonzo and just shuttled around in last place three laps down, still wouldn't have got points.

Yeah. For anybody that's a relatively modern Formula One fan, is just to go back and listen to those engines again and look how good the cars look.

Say, well, you know, you've got the top three teams, they're spending all this money. Why do these guys bother? You know, they're never going to win a race, but today's like today make it worthwhile.

Indeed. I mean, they're in business because they love Formula One, but also they have to make it pay. And those two points are the most valuable two points Paul Studdard has ever earned.

And on top of the desk, uh Mark Weber went up on the podium, finishing fifth in a Minardi. Uh, it was Michael Schumacher's request that he go up there. Obviously, you don't finish top three, you don't go up on the podium in normal circumstances, but this was Weber in a Minardi holding off Mika Salo over the closing lapse of that race until Salo ran out of talent and had a little spin.

That was it, and the first points for Minardi and at home in Melbourne in Australia.

I think if you like for those who don't follow the sport back then or weren't alive or whatever, um, this is like this is like Cadillac finishing fifth in a race today.

Yeah, I remember watching this one live. It was it I'd just moved to Australia. I'd only been in Australia 18 months, and so uh actually got to watch an Australian Grand Prix in prime time, which was uh a rarity for an Englishman back in the day. Of course, yeah. And it was yeah, and so um it was the old Channel 10 coverage, and it was uh it was fantastic to watch. And uh I was a bit of a Weber fan back then as well, so yeah.

Would have been like days of uh Alan Jones and Rusty and all those sort of guys.

And Minardi didn't have any champagne, all the other teams provided the champagne for the celebration.

Didn't it that happen recently as well, wasn't it, when Holkenberg was on the podium, his his uh Kick Salba didn't have any any champagne, and so Mercedes sent a couple of cases down for him.

You could argue this was Weber's best Australian Grand Prix, despite all the years in a red bull. Yeah, yeah, probably was. Probably was, yeah. Crazy. That wasn't that crazy.

Yeah. So speculation over whether it was trying to get Barrichello the win, but he was definitely after the photo finish, and it wound up being 0.011 of a second between the two of them.

Pretty spectacular, actually, watching them come down like that. I watched a few of the different replays of it. It was a bit of fun. And not something you'd really see now. A driver backing off to try and get a can I just say a photo finish.

Some seriously dominant, like we when I think of dominant years, Seb in what was it, 2011 comes to mind or 2013, whatever year it was, he won nine in a row, and this Ferrari car, this thing was just untouchable for three years. It was it was brutal viewing, even as a Ferrari fan at the time. Yeah.

Well, we were Ferrari. This is when you and I first met and we were the only Formula One fans around. It was just all Ferrari the whole time and always shoemar. Barrachello played his place nicely as second driver. It was always very dominant shoemarker.

As Hamilton came from his pit stop, rejoined the racetrack. Lando Norris was ahead. And in their desperation to stay ahead and to get ahead, the two championship protagonists have taken each other out of the Italian Grand Prix!

I was always a bit torn on it. I don't know if I can actually fast forward to the point here where he goes through. I don't think Hamilton actually gave Verstappen enough room as he's coming through. I think he has cut the chicane that little bit too much. It's his corner.

Um but that's just another that's another almost to the point where it's an intentional crash. He knows he's crashing there. Do you think so? He knows, yeah. I don't think he thinks that at the point that he's entering the chicana. Yeah, Lewis would do exactly the same as what he would do, and and there's no way that he he he doesn't crash there.

It was a weird season, too. They had the some cars had the curs, some didn't have the curs. Like it was it was a wacky year and blown double diffuser.

Yeah. It just I don't know. It was a weird year for the sport. And it was kind of the coming out party for Red Bull. If you look back at it, they were second, I think, in that championship. Um it was it was a strange old yeah, yeah.

Yes, yes, it was it was a great year. Obviously, it's it's um that how dominant they were. They would nobody's been that dominant as as far as the first six races is how fast that form was.

Yeah, brand new. We we did a um episode uh some time ago on the worst the worst world champs of the 2000s. I think Taylor and I think Taylor and I voted for Taylor tried. But to be fair, if Felipe Masa had a beaten Lewis, he would have he would have taken the crown.
