We also unpack the near-disaster between the Ferraris on lap one, before diving into the battle — and subsequent team radio drama — between the McLaren drivers.
Elsewhere, we marvel at Pierre Gasly’s incredible pole lap and debate the controversial stewarding decisions that saw Gasly stripped of his Monaco podium months after the race.
Finally, we look ahead to Formula 1’s inaugural Madrid Grand Prix next week — or, as we prefer to call it, The Mad Ring!
Join us for another packed episode of Drive to Describe as the championship drama continues to heat up! 🏎️💨

It was it was fantastic on your own at the end when you realize, oh crap, I've got to talk on my own now for five minutes.
SPEAKER_08And if you're tuning into the audio version only, James did do an intro. I just didn't press record. But we're here. The F1 Drive of the Scrooge podcast.
SPEAKER_02See, things like this don't happen when I'm pushing the buttons, people.
SPEAKER_05No, yeah. She it's well, we've only ever known Sage pushing the button, so we we thought he was just fantastic. Turns out he's slab bang average.
SPEAKER_02But miss a week, and I'm completely that job though, I don't want to completely out of form with a week off.
SPEAKER_08But uh here we are the F1 Drive to Describe podcast, James, Jackie, Nathan, Italian Grand Prix.
SPEAKER_02It is nice to have you two boys back.
SPEAKER_08May I may I say Yeah, say Taylor's a dick. Yeah. I'm no I'm I'm really curious what you guys think. This was my favorite race of the year.
SPEAKER_02It had its moments. I was I was watching the whole thing. You couldn't look away. You couldn't get up to get a coffee.
SPEAKER_05But what happened to George is just put a sour note on it for me.
SPEAKER_02Uh two minutes 30 seconds, people. That's how long that took.
SPEAKER_08Or a minute 18 on the pot.
SPEAKER_05I've used this this this before, but it was like watching somebody beating a puppy to death with a bat. Oh, come on. It was yeah, it wasn't right.
SPEAKER_02He's the only driver without a dog, isn't he?
SPEAKER_08That's not Jackie, who cares? Uh James.
SPEAKER_02Moving on, he did look very sad and very defeated.
SPEAKER_08You reckon?
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_02Oh, watching him in the the media pen at the end, he was very much thinking of his words more than he normally would. He is always very well versed, chooses his sentences carefully. This was another level, and he was emotionless. He was trying very hard to put the smile on. I'll give him credit there. He was trying to do everything right, but you could see he was just flat. He just wanted out to me.
SPEAKER_05What else do you take from that? He was behind anyway. We'll we'll get through get into it on the show. But um it it it's it it was and it you're right, it was a great race, and it just marred it for me. It just wasn't shouldn't have been right. There should have been a battle for the win at the end.
SPEAKER_08If you're if you're neutral, as far as the Mercedes battle is concerned, and uh of which I am, seeing a guy go from 19th in his home Grand Prix, the first Italian to win Monza in 60 years, from 19th to first, is pretty extraordinary a race to sit there and watch. And it was yeah, I f I I mean I felt I no, I didn't really feel for George. I just thought it was really I just thought it was a really great race. I it's not like a previous race where I felt like George got kicked in the balls by his team. This I felt like was a literal 50-50. Well no, don't you think that was literally a 50-50 call at that point? These are short labs.
SPEAKER_02But shouldn't George have had the call?
SPEAKER_08I agree with that. I do agree with that.
SPEAKER_06Would George have taken it, do you reckon? Yeah, I think so. I guess we'll have to do that.
SPEAKER_02There's been a question about what ties he had available, so I'm not sure if he would have.
SPEAKER_05Oh, we had a set of medium that'd have done four laps at the start of the race.
SPEAKER_02Oh, is it only four laps? Okay.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, we'll never know. The red flag was up to four laps, yeah.
SPEAKER_08We'll never know. So the um the one I'm certain got kicked in the balls by his own team was Lewis. Why on earth did they not pit him? Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Because it's Ferrari.
SPEAKER_08Now, granted, he wouldn't have had the full benefit of the virtual because he was down the road from the other guys who got out of the pits as it ended. So he would he would have lost a bit of time in that respect.
SPEAKER_05So you can a couple of seconds, he still would have had way a way bigger benefit than a penalty.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, that's true. Anyway, uh lots to talk about. So as we touched on, Kimmy Antonelli comes from 19th to win the Italian Grand Prix, the first Italian to do so for 60 years, leading home George Russell and Max Verstappen rounding out the podium places, with the McLaren finishing 0.1 second apart in fourth and fifth, respectively, with their number one driver fourth and their number two driver in fifth. We will talk more about McLaren as well. I have some thoughts on the radio messages. Um, Pierre Gasly, who was our pulse hitter, which also we haven't talked about yet, but we will. Incredible. Umished in seventh behind the game. Oh, massively. And Lewis was sixth. So that kind of rounds out your uh top of the pops, if you will, Charles Leclerc and early incident uh that we may as well show, right? We may as well just show that off the bat and talk about Shuttles. Yeah. Uh very short, very short, very short, but very uh prominent uh race, I think it's fair to say. So here is Shunnels is lap two crap.
SPEAKER_01For Oscar Biastri can't find his way back, and Sean McLaren's open into the wall! Sean McLare into the barriers and out of the race! And most importantly, safely out of the car, just a little bit wider, and as he gets on the power, lights up the rear. For Oscar Biastri can't find his way back!
SPEAKER_05Big accident, that one.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, that aerial hit that aerial shot really like really shows the smash.
SPEAKER_05Basically, he's there one second, he's gone the next.
SPEAKER_02It's uh yeah, and the speed coming through that turn. Before anything happens, they are at pace coming through that turn because it's a big open turn, it's not a tight one.
SPEAKER_05It's parabolic as one of the most famous corners for being the fastest corners on the circuit.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, and for movie enthusiasts come up for movie enthusiasts, that's where they had the car flip over the wall and catch on fire. But Brad Pitt was there to rescue him, so it was all okay.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02You know where that came from? That was actually from a real race.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, it was F2 race, wasn't it, a few years ago?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, Formula 3 2019. It was an Australian Alex Peroni. They had these silly little speed bump sausage curbs at Monza for a couple of practices. He hit one on the outside of Parabolic art and he went airborne. And that's where it came from for the movie.
SPEAKER_08And Brad Pitt saved him. Brad Pitt called it.
SPEAKER_02There was no flames for Alex Peroni, luckily. There was a few broken vertebrae, but there was no flames. But he was stuck hanging from the fence upside down. Car didn't make it to the ground.
SPEAKER_08Like a cow.
SPEAKER_02So there is speed there. So watching Charles have that back end come out and just go sliding, like that's gonna hurt.
SPEAKER_08Well, how about we talk about Charles' very limited race? Less than two laps, because holy shit, was he did he make those two laps eventful? Uh, I do want to talk about the Ferraris, started third and fourth. They were very tightly contesting corners one and two, which ended with Lewis in the gravel, and then in tenth by the end of the next straight, literally. What did you guys think of that? Nico Rosberg and Martin Brundle had very differing views on whether that was on whose fault that was, I suppose. So what did you think, James?
SPEAKER_05Um, by the letter of the law, it it's a penalty all day long. He's Lewis is ahead at the apex of both corners and needed to be given room on the outside and wasn't. As to whether in the in the court of public opinion it it it's still that way, I what is it second lap as well? Yeah, I it it's yeah, I think it goes either way. It's a flip of a coin, I can see why it didn't, I can see why it did. I think it's yeah, I think it helped. I think he had more chance of taking a penalty if he was still in the race. If he if he hadn't crashed, I think he would have taken a penalty, and the fact he crashed made it made it easier to not give him one.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so he'd be a point by then.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. Jackie? Which is wrong because he would take a grid penalty in the next race if he didn't.
SPEAKER_02No, I don't there should have been room. There was room.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_02It shouldn't have occurred the way it did. Lewis should have been fine to keep going and not pushed out.
SPEAKER_05You you disagree by the looks of your face, Age?
SPEAKER_02Now, viewers can actually see what we're all thinking at the same time.
SPEAKER_08Do I disagree? Uh no, not really, but I do I do accept that Charles got a small switcher on as he came into or out of uh turn two, which would have limited Lewis's amount of room on the outside at that point. Uh, but it's still his fault in that respect, even if it's a switcher. I just don't know if it's penalty worth it.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, that that's that's the thing, is everybody keeps saying nowadays that oh he he pushed on or he got a snap of oversteer or did this he's still in control of the car, so even if it's not his like he's not in control at that point, it's still his fault. Yeah, you're right.
SPEAKER_08There's there's been penalties where they say you lost control of the car and that's driver error. Uh I just think they're more lenient, lap one, race one sometimes. Yeah. And I'm hope I'm okay with that being play on. Yeah.
unknownFor me.
SPEAKER_02Have we noticed a pattern where this is happening with Leclerc, but it's only ever against Hamilton.
SPEAKER_08No, LeClaire's an aggressive defender, regardless of who it is. He's shown that multiple times.
SPEAKER_02Is it standing out to me just because they're both red?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, he's he's he's always he's stepped over the line a few times in the past as well. He's uh hungrier a few years ago. He nearly put somebody in the wall, didn't he?
SPEAKER_08That's uh he's an aggressive defender for sure. Yeah. Um well, all right. Well, sometimes we've got a bit to get through. James wants to talk about people kicking puppies. Um, Jackie, I'm sure, will somehow mention Aston Martin throughout this podcast.
SPEAKER_05And a few girlfriends, yeah.
SPEAKER_08And I will certainly be talking about Oscar Piastri. So without further ado, we will start with our uh When does the Fashion on the Field come into it? Beg your pardon?
SPEAKER_02When's fashion on the field?
SPEAKER_08Oh my lord, never, never ever. Yeah. If there's listeners out there that want a YouTube shorts exclusive, which is just Jackie talking about fashion and girlfriends, we we can make that happen. I will play no part.
SPEAKER_02And we need a puppies one now. We need a puppy podcast.
SPEAKER_08No, we do not. Now tweet length review, ladies first, Jack. What have you got for this uh Italian Grand Prix?
SPEAKER_0225 overtakes will always get you the win.
SPEAKER_06James.
SPEAKER_05Um mine is I should be way more excited about a drive like that from Antonelli. You should.
SPEAKER_08You look like you look like someone kicked your puppy. Uh mine is two words. Championship over.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_06Oh, it was over last week.
SPEAKER_05It was over in Danfort. As soon as they as soon as they put him past it, but that's the first one. No, come on, dude.
SPEAKER_08I mean, Russell was second, Antonelli was 19th. This was his this was his chance. And he's finished behind him, which is extraordinary.
SPEAKER_05But it's uh to give you the the listeners a glimpse behind the curtain. We had a few technical issues, and Sage had to log out earlier. And so Jackie and I had a five-minute chat with that, with just Jackie and I. And it it's I don't think he wins that race if they both pit or both don't pit. If if they're given the same treatment by Mercedes, then then he doesn't win that race. He couldn't get past him. He couldn't stay past him, that's for sure. Well, hang on a sec. I just I actually disagree with that.
SPEAKER_08Here we go. You not disagree with that, Jackie. He they were he couldn't.
SPEAKER_05He could stay past him. He could get past him, but he'd spend too too much of his chocolates.
SPEAKER_08You could say that about both of them, they were told to hold.
SPEAKER_05But George was always get getting like getting back until they were told to hold.
SPEAKER_08You could say the exact same front at that point. You could literally juxtapose that sentence and it would make no difference to what was happening in the race.
SPEAKER_05No, yeah, but it it at that point he could not stay. Yeah, it's even towards the end when he had a much faster car with the the threshold tires, he he nearly binned it coming around turn two. Yeah, but that's because the track was falling to pieces, which is crazy.
SPEAKER_02Okay, yeah, but that was also bad driving. You you don't try and go that maybe it's a discussion for later. Yeah, no, no, you should have just sat behind him through one and two.
SPEAKER_08It's a whole conversation. I I don't disagree with you. All right, so that's our uh that's our tweet link for views.
SPEAKER_02One week off and he's out of practice.
SPEAKER_08We I know literally. I've got to bring up all the stings now, too, because I'm just so not ready. I've got nothing prepared. I'm a literal idiot today. Uh, we move on to our yes, yes, yes, which is our favorite moment of the Grand Prix weekend.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_08That was Pierre Gasly's radio after qualifying and Kimmy's radio after the race, but uh both very orgasmic. James, what was your yes, yes, yes moment of the weekend?
SPEAKER_05Oh, we're changing order now, aren't we? Mix it up, yeah. Mix mixing it up, keep everybody surprised. Um, I had the the battle at the front between George and pretty much anybody that tried to overtake him at one point was was just fantastic watching that first few laps were were amazing, and um it it's yeah, I I had until he had George keeping everybody behind him until he had no choice but to let somebody through. Yeah, you're not gonna change my mind on this one. You're not gonna make me think I'm a I'm a George Nuffy on this one because he it it's if they are given the same opportunity in this race, then George wins. But he was not given the same opportunity to win the race.
SPEAKER_06Jackie.
SPEAKER_02Mine was just Kimi Antonelli's win. An Italian at Monza for the first time in forever. Um cool that summed it up nicely, actually, even it was outside of his lifetime. That is something I think is special, especially if you're there at Monza, having the Tefosi going absolute bananas for an Italian that wins. He was so excited, it meant so much to him. Should he have got it, should he not? That's a discussion for later on. But the end result is that, and I think it was just amazing. The whole atmosphere at the end of it, just how much he loved the fact he's got Monza now. I like that. We know I get a bit sentimental on these things.
SPEAKER_08Now, this has nothing to do with my yes, yes, yes. But David Coulthard bringing up LL Cool J to a 19-year-old was not the right chance.
SPEAKER_03You handed him, no, no, mate.
SPEAKER_07Jesus, David was a 90s LL Cool J song as well.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, it did make me laugh though. Um, yeah, my yes, yes, yes, I'll go different. I had Kimmy, but I actually want to change it. I'm gonna go Pierre Gasly's poll. I would never have picked Alpine getting a poll in dry, competitive, fair conditions at a Grand Prix. I mean, that is we we talk about like even last time we talked about Lando's best race of his career. This has to be Gasly's best quality lap in his life, in his life to pull to pull that out. What an incredible result. Yeah, he didn't have the race pace. We all knew that was probably where it was gonna go in the end, but I mean, he'll always have pole at Monza, and it's not like when he won and exactly, yeah, in a fair fight. So, I mean, just incredible, and I mean it shows the divergent career paths of him and Ocon since they split ways. Yeah, like Ocon's one of those guys we go, why is he here? And Gasly's like a grizzled vet in some ways, which is quite an extraordinary place to find himself.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, but you give him a sniff and he'll he'll perform. Yeah, yep.
SPEAKER_08So Pierre Gasly is my yes, yes, yes. We move on now to our least favorite moment of the weekend, which we call James.
SPEAKER_05No, Mikey, no.
SPEAKER_04No, Mikey, no, no, Mikey!
SPEAKER_08Uh, Toto. James, what was so not right?
SPEAKER_06Yeah, you're not gonna like me for this.
SPEAKER_05You're not gonna like me for this one's sake. Um, Oscar Piastri and that block.
SPEAKER_08Oh, that was come on horrendous. Horrendous. That was horrendous. Couldn't disagree with that.
SPEAKER_02I think there's some British bias in this one.
SPEAKER_05Big time. No. No, like you I like Oscar. I think he's I think he's a great driver, but that one was was double move, full, yeah, on full beans, and and didn't leave enough room for the side.
SPEAKER_08Well, if it's a double move at the ground, hang on a sec. If it's a double move at full beans, it ain't a double move, buddy. That's just moving. You're allowed to move.
SPEAKER_02Lando did say in his presser that it was fine.
SPEAKER_08He never got alongside, he never even got his rear wings alongside the front tires or the rear tires for that matter. But he was, yeah, it was it was dangerous. No, it was dangerous to Lando to put his car there. No. It was a closing gap. He never got near him. It was it was silly. But what was more silly, you're gonna leave me into my no mic, you know, very nicely, James. Thank you. Instruction from the pit wall, Oscar. Clean racing. My immediate reaction is You did nothing wrong. Guess what my immediate reaction was verbally? Two words.
SPEAKER_02See you bye.
SPEAKER_08Fuck off. Fuck off, leave him alone.
SPEAKER_02Same same.
SPEAKER_08Ridiculous.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that was rough because he didn't deserve that. He hadn't done anything to instigate that. They treat him It was just because Lando immediately jumped on the radio, right? Which he's then said afterwards was it's just heat of the moment racing. No, it was nothing.
SPEAKER_08They treat Oscar like a child. It's not the first time they've done that. They did in Austria too, remember when you locked up, didn't hit him, and then he's like, oh, Oscar, careful, you know, careful driver.
SPEAKER_05That was more by luck than judgment, though, that he didn't hit him that time. He had all four words locked up going in the turn up, turn one, yeah.
SPEAKER_08I just don't like the way they treat him. I uh I'm telling you, I wish he got out. I wish he got out. I hate McLaren, and they prove every week not obvious, it's every week why I hate them is proven more important. The most anti-Australian Formula One team of all time.
SPEAKER_02Oh, come on, there's Red Bull still.
SPEAKER_08Nope, don't care.
SPEAKER_05Oh what you think what they did to Weber 21.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, any other race with Weber, they mentally destroyed treatment in the end, yeah. And we know I'm anti-Australian and even I'm trying to defend a meeting.
SPEAKER_05To like this blithering mess in the corner.
SPEAKER_08I hate McLaren. Bunch of pricks. Jackie, what's your least favorite moment of the weekend?
SPEAKER_02Uh Kimi Antonelli.
SPEAKER_08What? Your least favourite?
SPEAKER_02Lap 49. Yep, when he's tried to get around George Russell through turns one and two there, and he's put it out into the the gravel trap. What are you even trying? No one gets through there safely. And if you're a smart racer, you bide your time and wait, which and it might come up later. Lando Norris did the exact same thing to Oscar Piastri in the last lap. He waited it out and took his chance when there was no time left for Oscar to fight back. Kimmy just needed to wait it out. Who tries to overtake through turns one and two when you've still got three laps to go on a faster car and better tires?
SPEAKER_05Did you just call him trackers falling to pieces in lap in turn two? Did you just call him dumb?
SPEAKER_02I didn't say it. But if you if that's the implication you took, then okay. Why why would you? I mean, those turns are already tied in opposite ears. There's been plenty of radio chatter about that corner ripping up. Like, what's he thinking? If you're not trying to take George Russell down that start-finish straight, why would you try through turns one and two? That's where he's still young, and that's bad racecraft.
SPEAKER_08I mean, shit, if that's the biggest strike against him at the moment, he's doing pretty bloody well. Alright, we move on to our apology letter for our least favorite moment of the weekend. Michael. That's not right. Someone who needs to apologize, James. See, I'm really out of form. Someone who needs to apologize, James, for their behavior.
SPEAKER_00Michael, this is total. Go ahead, Toto. Uh Michael, I just send you an email.
SPEAKER_08Oh dear.
SPEAKER_05Um Mercedes need to just come out and say that Kimmy's their number one driver.
SPEAKER_02Okay, so we're back to me not calling Antonelli dumb, but if that's how you want to take it, you can. We're kind of at that spot with Mercedes.
SPEAKER_05All right, talking about it's it's plainly of blatantly obvious to to everybody knows that if you're the lead driver, then you get first call on pit stops. Always has done, always will do. And they didn't even offer the pit stop to George. George, they just went straight in to uh to give it to Kimmy. And once you done that, and once you he came out and he was a second lap quicker on his new tires, it was just a matter of time. There was no way to not just stack the cars. If you're gonna do that, then George had his tires from the first from the first in were only four laps old. Put them on the same tires and let them race to the end and see what happens. But they didn't, and they it it's like I you know me, I'm not I've been one that's not famously not called this kind of behaviour forever. And it it's now it's just too obvious that you can't not not call that that um that Mercedes are in the Kimi Antonelli business.
SPEAKER_06Jackie?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, okay. We can't argue that. That's there. Um my letter of apology is a little bit it's definitely off track, but it's very off track, is actually Flavio Briatore.
SPEAKER_03Oh he's a break.
SPEAKER_02We've had some there's many things about Flavio. Uh those listeners and watchers that have been following Formula One for many years will be well aware of Flavio Briatore.
SPEAKER_05No, they shouldn't be because he's got a lifetime ban. So yeah.
SPEAKER_02But he's back. Um going back to Monaco, there was all the issues with speeding through the pit lane. Uh Alpine put in a protest. Pierre Gasly was awarded a podium for Monaco after the fact. Everything's fine. It went off to the Court of Appeal. The result for that came back over the weekend, just before Pierre Gasly got poll positioned. Keep that in mind. And the ruling was that no, Gasly will actually lose his place, the penalties for Monaco will stand. Ria Torre then came out at a press conference and had quite a dig at McLaren, stating basically that one of the judges was being paid by McLaren. Um, I think the actual quote was something about a working relationship with McLaren. Uh nearly caused a bit of a fight with him and good old Stella uh during the press conference.
SPEAKER_05Wiry, wiry guys, Stella. You wouldn't want to fight him.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I don't think you want to cross that guy. He comes across quite nice, but I don't think you want to cross him.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_02But I just felt it wasn't the time, the place, or the comments, which was pretty rotten. Uh, but also it's Briatore. Are we supposed?
SPEAKER_05It's especially from Briatore, is those in glass houses, mate. You've literally been caught and getting a lifetime ban for cheating. And and you're then just basically throwing any shit at the wall and see what sticks. Devil's advocate.
SPEAKER_02But maybe cheating's okay. You do it rather than bribing a judge. Maybe that's where he draws the line.
SPEAKER_08Can I devil's advocate?
SPEAKER_05No, he'll just put put the safety of his driver at risk by telling him to crash on purpose. May I now devil's advocate?
SPEAKER_08Go far away. Come on. What if he's right?
SPEAKER_02Oh, you don't seriously think they're bribing a judge.
SPEAKER_05Mind you, you if you'd have said that they were they were spying on Ferrari, you would have said that's just as a preposterous.
SPEAKER_06Right. But they didn't because it's Mario Boratory. He's an idiot. Takes one to know one.
SPEAKER_02Oh, come on. Zach Brown does a lot of things. He's not off bribing judges.
SPEAKER_08He was just hanging out with Donald Trump. Again, we're not a political podcast. Might have taken some lessons.
SPEAKER_02Look, I like that's a whole nother level.
SPEAKER_08Can we can we though can we address this changing of the rules? Because I think if Taylor was here, he would want to talk about this. How is this sport officiated like this? Seriously.
SPEAKER_02Oh, it's a nightmare. There is no consistency. You don't know what's going to happen next.
SPEAKER_08We just we just learned the results for a race from four months ago on the weekend. That that is changed twice already. Yeah, it's changed twice. What the fuck are we dealing with? One of the most technologically advanced sports that already has in its rules that you they have the right to investigate after the race, they can look at all the vision, they can interview people before they make a decision. Every sport in the world makes calls there and then. Soccer, football, AFL, cricket. Like you've got seconds. This sport gets.
SPEAKER_02The golf is within 24 hours.
SPEAKER_08Okay, so but still, I don't know.
SPEAKER_05But even all those world bodies, they're all as corrupt as each other.
SPEAKER_08Right. No, I mean probably the worst.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, the worst, absolutely. But then that that's that's the issue, isn't it? Is when there's so much money involved, corruption is just it's just there to be for all to see, isn't it? Like the the fact that FIFA changed the rules of a red card for somebody in the World Cup because Donald Trump asked him to, is concrete with the most bizarre things I've ever seen in my life.
SPEAKER_08Um well, let let me lead into my apology because it's going to be the stewards. I remain really confused by Oscar Piastri's three-place grid penalty when within the rulings itself, and I will read it verbatim because I think that's the only way to do that. The driver of Car 81 stated that he was not alerted to the fact that Verstappen and Lawson were on push laps, but realized as he was almost at turn one that Verstappen was on a push-lap, he slowed significantly, he almost stopped, and kept to the right to allow Verstappen to pass, but was unable to do anything to avoid impeding Lawson, who was close behind. The stewards accept that with the information he had and the situation he was placed in, the driver of car 81 had at this stage no other options available, and hence inadvertently and also unnecessarily impeded car 30. If he stops dead on that corner for multiple seconds, which is what the only other alternative here, he has about eight other cars following him out of the pit lane. He's gonna cause some sort of a drama, regardless of what he does there. He had nowhere else to go. Why is that penalty worthy? And and he impeded a car that was gonna start from the back of the grid.
SPEAKER_05You can't you can't not penalize somebody for that. It's the same as saying, well, you can never impede an Aston Martin because they're gonna finish last anyway. No, fine. All right, take that part out.
SPEAKER_08Their own ruling said he had no other option, no other viable option.
SPEAKER_05He he could have been not in that, yeah, been slower into that corner and and just avoided it completely. It's it's a team penalty, it's not his his fault, it's his team's fault for not telling him to look to his two people on push lap, get out the fucking way.
SPEAKER_02If he stops that's where my issue is, he shouldn't have been released in the first place.
SPEAKER_08They were all released. It's a line coming out of Pit Lane.
SPEAKER_02If he stops dead, but he was released into the moving traffic, he was released into the flying traffic. To me, it could have been avoided by that. They all that's what's created the problem, and they've had to put a penalty somewhere.
SPEAKER_08Okay, so you guys are you guys agree with this penalty? Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02But I do agree with the penalty because I don't think he should have been there in the first place. So yes.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, so you think it's the team's fault for releasing him where they released him?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, I believe it's the team's fault. They shouldn't have released him when they're gonna be. Yeah, wait till they're passed and then go.
SPEAKER_05Wait till they're passed and then then warm your own. Yeah, okay.
SPEAKER_02I accept your And I think it was made worse by the fact Max got round and then Liam didn't. I think if both got blocked or both got passed, different story and different outcome.
SPEAKER_05I'm actually going to accept your version. I still think I still think yeah, I still think he's uh it's a penalty worthy. Yeah.
SPEAKER_08I'm going to accept that. But there's still my apology letter because this farce about Monaco is worthy. Yeah, completely. Oh, it's ridiculous. That's where I stand with it. Just unbelievably, yeah.
SPEAKER_05The the the the law the technology was either faulty or it wasn't, and it was incorrect or it wasn't, that and that by now they would know what's going on, and the the race should have been decided a long time ago.
SPEAKER_02But is this now thinking outside the box further? Law around the Western world is based on precedent. Things that have happened in the past and results and rulings then get repeated throughout history from that. Are we now starting to see in Formula One that decisions can be overturned three or four months later? Is this going to start opening the door? And for the most obvious example, is this going to open the door for Lewis Hamilton to actually dispute 2021 and we can have a championship overturned years later?
SPEAKER_08I mean, Jack, we've kind of got this going on with Felipe Maso.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, he's still standing as well. That case is still going on. Is things like this where it is taking months after the fact, is this going to then create a precedent for these more long-term issues to raise their hands?
SPEAKER_05But that's just the world we live in nowadays that everybody's so litigious that that it there's nothing.
SPEAKER_02But this is sport, this isn't civil action just to get money. Well, does money then get paid back? I mean, trophy's gonna have to be handed back again now.
SPEAKER_05I don't, yeah, I I don't really have an answer to what you're saying, but it it's just the world we live in, and it it's it's only gonna get worse as well. I think it's it you get to that point, is people just need to show a bit of and and uh it's actually a good time to bring up 2021 this year because uh Chocho actually came out this weekend and said he's accepted it and uh he'll uh he'll move on now, which is he's been doing a good thing.
SPEAKER_04He may not take interactions, yeah.
SPEAKER_05Five years, Toto. Move on, buddy. Yeah, yeah. What the hell? Yeah, yeah. So bless him. We might have to change the uh uh the no micino to something else next year because he's moved on now, so we don't want to bring it up every week.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, um, all right. Did you guys want to touch on anything commentary corner wise? I do not, I just don't. It was good to have the real commentators back. Oh no, I've got one thing. I've got one thing. I've got one thing. Actually, no, I'm gonna make it my poozy, so we'll just go to Poozy. Is that alright? Alright. Let's go. James? He's not dead. The Clive Poozy Memorial Award. Hashtag he's not dead.
SPEAKER_05He's very much not dead at the last time of June.
SPEAKER_08Well I go first. I may as well. It'll bleed into what I was about to say.
SPEAKER_05You've you've preempted it now, anyway.
SPEAKER_08Crofty is my poosie. Crofty. Crofty gets my poosie.
SPEAKER_02Okay, I might know why.
SPEAKER_08Pretty sure this had to be a driver, but yeah. No, it's Crofty. Now, he's my poozy, and um, Karun agrees with me. So he came over on the commentary with the suggestion for Kimmy not to challenge George. And Karoon, unbeknownst to us, and they gave us a peek behind the curtain, was immediately in his ear off air, going, What are you talking about? They cannot ask Kimmy not to go for the win at his home Grand Prix, and then they brought him on air to say exactly that. Crofty, the British bias stuff. Sometimes I'm joking, and then sometimes you say dumb shit like that that pisses me off. Just don't do that shit. It's a ridiculous country.
SPEAKER_02I actually wonder if he was ill or something. Yeah, if you listen at the start of the broadcast, the start of the race broadcast, he was actually pausing, he was stuttering, he was getting teams wrong.
SPEAKER_08I mean, yeah, and he kept getting passes wrong too. He's like, oh yeah, passing.
SPEAKER_02Half the Cory was back out on track.
SPEAKER_08He kept thinking people were passing Max, and it's like, no, that's just Oscar holding off Lando. Like he was all over the place.
SPEAKER_02He's had a bit of a rough weekend, I think.
SPEAKER_08There was a lot of action though, in fairness to him. I will forgive it, because when you're watching about five battles all at once on your screenslash on the screen, timing screens and the screen, I can understand getting confused. But the suggestion that Kimmy doesn't attack George is just come on, mate. Like, be serious. I'd be okay with it.
SPEAKER_03Of course you would.
SPEAKER_08For reasons. All right, James, who you got? Who's the poo's? Um Charles Claire. Who's the Poos? I like that. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_05Oh wow. You can't tell, mate. Honestly, you didn't look about as happy with yourself as you've ever been in your life. Who's the Poos? Um Charles Leclerc. He was racing for four laps, ran his teammate off the road, and then ran himself off the road into the wall real hard. Charles Leclerc, well-deserving poozy this week.
SPEAKER_08You gave him two extra laps, and he actually did.
SPEAKER_02Well, there was a warm up lap.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, sorry. Yeah, we had two laps into the safety car before they red flagged it. Yeah. No, but he wasn't there. He was out. No, that's what I mean. That's what I mean. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Well, he had the formation lap, and then he had to get round to park on the grid before the formation lap. So there's your four.
SPEAKER_05Also, oh Yuki. Whoever parked in the wrong frickin grid's.
SPEAKER_07Come on, Yuki.
SPEAKER_05Come on, you're gonna be a little bit listening anymore, dickhead. Yeah.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_02Lance troll. Four being first driver to hit 100 Q1 eliminations.
SPEAKER_08Poor.
SPEAKER_02The record nobody wants.
SPEAKER_08He's got it.
SPEAKER_02All I can do is probably not, because you think about it. If you're driving that badly that you're not getting out of Q1 that often, you're not keeping your job.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, exactly. Right. Never be broken.
SPEAKER_08I I uh I channeled my uh Kimmy there and just went, poor. Yeah, he 100 Q1 eliminations. That is that is a that's impressive. That is a damning statistic. Yeah, because that car, it's dreadful today, but come on, mate.
SPEAKER_02It hasn't always been dreadful. Fernando Alonso was doing podiums in it a couple of years ago.
SPEAKER_05Four years. That's the thing with with with Lance as well, is is when he first came in, he was a good driver.
SPEAKER_02Um he won he worked podium in his first year in Azerbaijan. He deserved his place when he first came in.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, it it it's but he's just he's basically given up, isn't he? It's just basically daycare from his dad that keeps him out of trouble, yeah. Yeah, go away.
SPEAKER_08It's a good call, Jack. Any week that's a good call. We move on to our top five drivers of the weekend where we rank our five drivers and then they go into a blind spreadsheet, and at the end of the year we get a top ten, then there is every chance in the world, James, that Daniel Ricardo will still make my top ten drivers.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, not been on the grid for two years, but yeah. By the end of the year, who cares?
SPEAKER_05Okay, just imagine if we'd have done this podcast when Mark Webber was racing.
SPEAKER_08Oh, yes, driver of the year for four straight years.
SPEAKER_05Many, many years championship every year, and Mark would have still been so used to.
SPEAKER_07Oh, anyway.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_08Number five, let's do it. Jackie, who you got?
SPEAKER_02I really struggled with my top five this week. Um, probably three, four, five. I struggled with actually.
SPEAKER_08Great story. Needs more dragons.
SPEAKER_02Right. Moving right along then, because I've been told to. Number five is Franco Colapinto.
SPEAKER_05Oh.
SPEAKER_02I thought the Alpines have actually had a pretty decent weekend. He started seventh.
SPEAKER_05Didn't he? Sixth or seventh, yeah.
SPEAKER_02He was pushing the start of that race. He got past cars and he was having a crack. It was really impressive.
SPEAKER_08And then he ran out of talent, as James says.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, he did a little bit, but he still put a car in the 17th at one point after he put it in the dirt, in the gravel, he wound up 17th and got it back to ninth in a mid-level car from a driver we don't give a lot of credit to.
SPEAKER_08He's part of the car. Yeah, gonna say it's all relative. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Uh I thought it was a decent weekend for him.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, busted watch is what right twice a day. So yeah. This is his twice a day for the year. So Colopinto's my number five twice as well.
SPEAKER_08High praise, James. High praise. Uh, my number five is my boy Oscar Piastri. I thought B he was some very good racing.
SPEAKER_02Yes, it was an honorable mention for me.
SPEAKER_08Very good racing.
SPEAKER_05Anyway, close to mine.
SPEAKER_08Out did Lewis Hamilton comfortably on talent, and then was challenging Max Verstappen on much better tires, and even took the position back from him there for a hot minute. Eventually lost out to Lando because the team forced him to move aside. But uh, aside from that, excellent racing.
SPEAKER_05So Lando's in your top five?
SPEAKER_08No.
SPEAKER_05Okay.
SPEAKER_08Boom. Number five, Oscar Piastri. Gotcha. Lando took forever to pass Gasly. I I know he got fourth in the end. Like it was fine. I just you know, from the heights of last race, this didn't this didn't blow me away.
SPEAKER_06Number four, Jack.
SPEAKER_02Uh number four for me was Arvid Lindblad. Uh quiet achiever this race. He only picked up one position. Very quiet achiever.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. Very quiet achiever.
SPEAKER_02I'm really enjoying watching him race this year. He was out there. He did get some screen time. He's just slowly making his way through. You've got to remember, he's in the second team. I think it's starting to put some together some really consistent results.
SPEAKER_08That's true. I think it's important though that you use his correct name. Constantopolis Jones.
SPEAKER_07I've got that written on my notes at the very top, so I never forget it.
SPEAKER_05Um, my number four is Max Verstappen. Um, yeah, that car's nowhere close to being in the place it was, and he he drove it very well this weekend and threatened to be a little bit higher at one point. So, but yeah, Max Verstappen number four for me.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, that's fair. I've got Pierre Gasly at four. The quality lap was incredible. Top five isn't a bad place to be. You might have him higher than me. That's okay. Pierre Gasly, number four. Excellent.
SPEAKER_02For those listening, go to the YouTube clip just to look at James' face right now. That's probably a screen up for Instagram later.
SPEAKER_08An incredible poll app, and then he went from first to seventh in the race. So it's fine.
SPEAKER_05No, yeah, the poll up is worth way higher than that for me.
SPEAKER_08You may be right. I disagree.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_05Jack.
SPEAKER_02George Russell. I think he was hard done by. He actually had a half-decent race. I'm not much of a fan of him. Um, but I think he did drive really well and was stuck in the circumstances he was given.
SPEAKER_08James, you've created this, you know, where we backhand compliment people because of the way you've treated Max Verstappen for four years on this podcast.
SPEAKER_02I'll try to be more positive moving forward.
SPEAKER_08That we've all become into this habit of going, this guy, I don't really like him, but I think that's to differentiate between our biases.
SPEAKER_02I don't like him, but I'm still putting him at three. Versus I could have put Fernando Alonso there, because you know he made it round two laps. That's more than LeClair.
SPEAKER_08It's quite the achievement. Go on, James. Who's your number three?
SPEAKER_05I think this is where I uh lose some credibility. Um, Kimmy Antonelli, number three. If he doesn't get the favor from Mercedes, he doesn't win this race.
SPEAKER_02He still would have got second.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. I think he could have. He was at the end of the second lap, he'd gone from 19th to 12th, and he didn't really overtake anybody in anger. He just drove past them.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, but it was Lance Strong on Fando Alonso.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, but there wasn't anybody to it wasn't he didn't go beat them on the brakes at the inside, he just drove past them on the straight. It it wasn't they weren't really overtakes, they were just driving past people. It's a very different, different art, I think. But um and then the red flag came out and which really helped him, obviously, because he wasn't so far like he caught back up again to the the the field spread that didn't get him, and then uh yeah, it it's then got the preferential treatment. So it it's to go from 19th to win the race is still a very impressive thing to do, but it's the least impressive version of doing that that you could do for me this weekend. It's still good, and it's still top three, but yeah.
SPEAKER_08It was only number three sixty to ninety seconds ago. You were scoffing that I had Pierre Gasly, the guy that went from first to seventh in my top. Goodness me.
SPEAKER_02Well, tell me it's Bernando Alonso.
SPEAKER_08Jackie, who's I do have a question though, three.
SPEAKER_03Racing. What?
SPEAKER_08What just happened? What did you say? Sorry I missed that.
SPEAKER_02I'm just wondering if Valtery Bodas and Sergio Perez were there because I didn't see them at all this weekend.
SPEAKER_08But they I mean they were, but on a weekend like this, why would we want to see them? Like we had such great racing up and down the grid, and they weren't part of that. Yeah. So fuck 'em.
SPEAKER_05There goes our G-rating this week.
SPEAKER_08Number three. Who's last year? Number three, you're number three. Georgie Boy. Pretty good weekend. He drove well. Not well enough to beat his teammate who started 19th, but he did well.
SPEAKER_02Right. Look at the podcast. It was um I just noticed.
SPEAKER_08It was sorry. It was interesting that he um that Max got back past him though, don't you think? Like I didn't expect that to happen in the early battles that they were having. So I just don't think he's quite uh like even if Kimmy wasn't there, I don't think he was driving at a level that Kimmy's driven at. Do you get what I'm do you get what I'm saying? Like consider the fact that once Kimmy.
SPEAKER_05But I I I don't think I think he wins that race if Kimmy doesn't pit. So uh I think he was at a level he is on an edge all weekend.
SPEAKER_08You may be right, but if they start say first and second, I'm Kimmy's beating him.
SPEAKER_05No, I don't think he is. I think he had the he had the edge on him all weekend.
SPEAKER_02I think George still drives a bit too safe. If we go head to head with those two, I think George still drives.
SPEAKER_05But then I don't think Kimmy is a great head-to-head, like one-on-one battle racer. He's fast, don't get me wrong, but I still think he makes like the mistake he made in turn two this weekend. James.
SPEAKER_08I don't think he's he's are you really suggesting that the guy who started 19th and won, if he started second, he wouldn't have won? No.
SPEAKER_05And I had the same the same tactics or the same yeah strategy as George. I think George wins that race. Well, that's certainly an opinion. And I don't think it's a shock to say that, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_05He was faster all weekend, he was faster in P2 and P3. Uh everybody was a bit P1 was a bit messed up, but uh, and then faster in quality and then and then uh yeah. And the start but the point where they were battling where they had the same tires, George was ahead. Until they were told to stop racing and get gap um max. I mean they're switching positions every lap, but sure.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, but I still think Kimmy would have been able to get around him.
SPEAKER_05I yeah, I don't think so. But then that's it.
SPEAKER_02If all things were equal and he hadn't hit, I still think he would have got around George.
SPEAKER_05I don't think he does. Not this weekend.
SPEAKER_08Okay.
SPEAKER_05Number two. But then then it it's like with the the culmination of of Zan Vaughan now, it's to do what they've done to George. It it it's you could see why he's now just in he's basically resigned to the fact he's gonna come second this year.
SPEAKER_08This doesn't this isn't just a bit for you. You genuinely think Mercedes have decided we're out on George.
SPEAKER_05What what what in the last two races makes you think that that's not true? Um he was asked to move aside for his teammate, and then he was given the guy was given a superior strategy at the same time when they could have double stacked. Well, he wasn't asked to move aside, he was asked to the end.
SPEAKER_08He was asked to look after his tires.
SPEAKER_05But no, in Zanvol, I'm talking.
SPEAKER_08Sure. The evidence to the contrary, James, would be you know, they used, and I know Kimmy had penalties, but they did make him work for George throughout all of qualifying. Um, they asked him to hold.
SPEAKER_05But then they he didn't actually do it. Yes, he did. In Q2, but in Q1 he pulled off because Max snuck in that. They didn't want to give a toe to Max as well. Come on, dude.
SPEAKER_08Like, I mean, he was he was following instructions. You you can't claim he wasn't. Um and then in the race, he was asked to hold, and he even said on the radio, you want me to hold behind him? Like he he followed all the instructions. I if you think so. There's some element that you could say the team instructed him to stay behind. You could mount that argument. Do I think George should have had first right of refusal for the pit? Yeah, of course. That's that's standard fair. I'm not sure George would have taken it.
SPEAKER_05But we'll never know because he's we'll never know.
SPEAKER_08But I'm just um maybe he was asked and he said, No, I'm good, my tires are fine.
SPEAKER_05George has said that a lot of times over now.
SPEAKER_08But he said that would be.
SPEAKER_02No, he wasn't given the option. I'm just saying that in the media then.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, but I'm just saying, had he been given the option, it's not out of the realms of possibility to think George would have said, My tires are fine, I'm good.
SPEAKER_05Uh yeah, under a virtual safety car, I don't think anybody doesn't pit there if they're offered it. Okay, well, we'll never know. If if they say, uh especially if they say, well, Kimmy's pitting, do you want to pit?
SPEAKER_08Well, they couldn't put both, they couldn't stack them, that would have cost too much time. They could. It wouldn't have been sense. What three seconds? Yeah. It just wouldn't have made much sense to do that.
SPEAKER_07Uh anyway.
SPEAKER_05But yeah, I I just don't I don't see I don't see how the last two races. Yeah.
SPEAKER_08I mean, I created this conspiracy kind of as a joke.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_08And it seems to be coming to life in your mind more and more. I feel like I've brainwashed.
SPEAKER_04You're the only one that created this.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, but you know, you know me, so I don't go down the rabbit hole very often. I'm normally pretty straight straight ahead, but there's too much evidence to say that he's not.
SPEAKER_07Oh, Jackie, you'd be the deciding vote.
SPEAKER_08Do you think McClare Mercedes uh favoring Kimmy?
SPEAKER_02I said back, I think it was race three, that if Kimmy got another win, that Toto would jump on that bandwagon and flog that horse. That's on record races ago.
SPEAKER_08Do you think okay?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, absolutely. Toto Wolf will favour Kimmy Antonelli to get Kimmy Antonelli the championship over George Russell.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, right. Poor George, poor Oscar. Just getting screwed over all the time. Uh number two.
SPEAKER_02And we were talking that um, as you were having your technical difficulties, that George Russell has been in all the wrong places at the wrong time, and he's done everything right through his career. He spent his time at Williams in the feeder team, doing everything right that he should, then got the job at Mercedes just as their car took a turn. Wrong place, wrong time, much like Fernando Alonso, but he created his own problems. George hasn't created his own problems. Oh, he's just not good enough against his teammate, correct. But he's now getting no support from the team to compete against his teammate.
SPEAKER_08No support?
SPEAKER_02Not the level of support. Okay. All right, number two, yeah.
SPEAKER_05He's not getting the rubber the green. I agree, I love your own luck.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, yeah, exactly. There's elements of both, right? And I think I if I cared about George, I'd probably feel much more strongly. As it is, I just it's kind of an amusement to me. Um, but I think Kimmy's better.
SPEAKER_02I like that if you cared about him.
SPEAKER_08But I think Kimmy's better. So I don't think it makes a big difference, is sort of what I'm more suggesting. But James, you may be right. George might have won if he pitted, who knows? We don't we'll never know. Yeah, we'll never know.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, exactly. But that's the biggest issue for me is we'll never know because he wasn't given the opportunity. All you want the teammate is to be given the same opportunities as your teammate.
SPEAKER_08So you would agree that Oscar wasn't given the same opportunities last year, right?
SPEAKER_05As uh I don't think yeah. If you could look at it that way, I quite agree with you.
SPEAKER_08But it it's I don't think But you think Lando's the better driver, right? Yeah. Right, and I agree. And I think Kimmy's the better driver than George.
SPEAKER_05Uh, but then your your your evidence is only what from China on this year, up until that point, George would have been quite markedly the better driver. Last year he was head and shoulders above head and shoulders above Kimmy last year. You you both can't disagree with that, if not that's recently.
SPEAKER_03But it's the first year.
SPEAKER_08You know what? Yeah, though it is it is in more broad terminology, it is super hard to ascertain who is really good and who's just doesn't suit a regulation, right? Look at Lewis in in in the Mercedes after 2021. We thought he'd lost the ability to drive. Clearly not the case. No, you just don't know what how like Oscar's clearly taking longer to come to grips with this kind of car. I think there's really promising signs this weekend, to be honest. I thought his racecraft and his ability to stick, you know, because there was races where he's falling 20-30 seconds behind Lando, like he's nowhere. Yeah, but this race weekend wasn't one of those. So we'll see. We'll see what happens going forward. But um, I'm worried for George. I just we've seen it, haven't we? We've seen it with Weber, we've seen it with uh Felipe Massa, we've seen it with like where guys just get beaten into the second place, and that's where their career sits. And he's and that's that's what I'm worried about. David Coulthard, another great example of that, right? And so we're getting really close to that zone if he can't turn it around a little bit soon and he needs to turn it around soon.
SPEAKER_05But this weekend, like he was faster this weekend. He was faster all weekend until he wasn't, until he got the breath French retired treatment. Until he wasn't.
SPEAKER_08Yeah. Anyway, anyway, we digress. Number two. Number two. Yes. Yes. Long. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Pierre Gasly for me was number two.
SPEAKER_08Can you say it correctly?
SPEAKER_02No.
SPEAKER_08Come on.
SPEAKER_02You do it.
SPEAKER_08Pierre Gasly.
SPEAKER_02Yes, that guy. I don't do voiceovers, people. Um we've already discussed it. That is never on a recording, my singing. Thank you very much. Um, it was just an all-round good weekend. That qualifying for him was amazing, and I think very well timed after the Court of Arbitration hearing. His race result wasn't up there, but it was up there. He was best of the rest. We know his car isn't fast enough in a race condition, and he had some really good driving. He held his own, he tried to block the cars out where he could, and I think he did a really good job. And I thought he had a really great weekend.
unknownYep.
SPEAKER_05George Russell's my number two, as I said, fastest weekend until he got shafted with the strategy from Mercedes. We've gone over that. We don't need to do it anymore.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, George and Kimmy's got the bulk of the uh attention for sure. Uh my number two is Max Verstappen. The fact that he was hanging on to both of those guys for so long in a car that's clearly not at the level was pretty good, and he left he left Liam Lawson kind of nowhere, which we expected, and Liam was starting from the back, but you see the variation between Kimmy and Liam, and you see the variation in ability. Uh but I thought the fact that Max hung around so long, even retook the lead at one point, like, and uh then it was weird. His pace on the mediums after the pit stop was just odd. Oh, he's on the hards. On the hards, was he? Sorry, yeah. So he just didn't seem to have the same light difference between the two. No, but he he, I mean he was notably slower on the second phase of his race. And the fact that Oscar got past him again on 30 lap older tires was a bit odd, but then he broke away and it was he was fine for third from there. But it was overall, I think to get a podium with the two Ferraris, the two McLaren's, I think everyone thought they'd all be a bit faster than Red Bull this weekend, and Max proved it proved it the other way. So pretty good weekend for Max.
SPEAKER_06Number one, number one, Jim. Number one.
SPEAKER_02My number one, 25 overtakes to go from 19th to first, Kimmy Antonelli.
SPEAKER_05Touche, agreed. Um for me, the bigger upset for the weekend was Pierre Gasly put it on pole. If you if you if I'd have said to you at the start of the weekend Kimmy comes from 19th and wins the race, or Pierre Gasly puts it on pole, you'd be more surprised and you'd think that Pierre Gasly going on pole is a bigger upset than than Antonelli going from 19th to first.
SPEAKER_02No, I needed Kimmy to be a top 10 star to switch my one and two.
SPEAKER_08Uh no, I agree with you, James. I wouldn't I'm I'm more surprised by Pierre's poll than Kimmy going from 19th to first, especially when you go throw in a red flag where he gets a reset. Yeah, then it's totally achievable.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_08Yeah. So I will grant you that. Yeah, that's a fair one. Uh maybe I gave Pierre at four a bit rough. But um I I put more weight on the race, I guess.
SPEAKER_05Maybe I shouldn't. It's the biggest quality shock since since he won Monza. Stroll George, what about Turkey? Oh yeah, George second and spa. Quali shock. That was weather affected. True.
SPEAKER_08So was Turkey though, right? Yeah. That was slippery conditions of Stroll got pole. Yeah. Stroll on pole. Yeah. So is your poos? Stroll on pole.
SPEAKER_03That's never going to be used ever again. Yeah.
SPEAKER_07Strolls pole.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. Oh, let's not talk about Lan Strolls Pole. Thank you very much.
SPEAKER_07We are F1 driving.
SPEAKER_05If you ever need to like and subscribe, right now is the time movies. It's just like we talk about Strolls Pole.
SPEAKER_08Um, we do go to straight into the first Madrid Grand Prix. You guys looking forward to that?
SPEAKER_05Yes, Madrid Ring.
SPEAKER_06Have you looked at the circuit?
SPEAKER_08Isn't it called Strolls Pole in the Madrid Ring?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, the Mad Ring, I think it's called. The Mad Ring. It's kind of like uh if you've had a good curry the night before, you've got a mad ring.
SPEAKER_03Oh, it's not getting better.
SPEAKER_07Strolls pole in the mad ring. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Uh it does look like an interesting track. Um, I haven't seen any recently.
SPEAKER_05The thing I'm looking forward to most about it is nobody has any data on it whatsoever because it didn't exist last year. So it could could throw up a surprise. You never know. We don't know what kind of thing.
SPEAKER_02Sector one looks like it's coming pretty quick.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. And uh we will we will see from there. But um I'm looking forward to next week, and hopefully it's a reasonable time for us, another 11 pm start, so you can get it get it in. Did you guys watch last night? I just hope I hope. Yeah. Yeah, me too.
SPEAKER_02I made it to lap 31 and then watched the rest this morning. Tap down.
SPEAKER_05Uh I at the start I was nodding about it because I was jet lagged from from New York, and so it's um yeah, I I was struggling, but I managed to push through because I knew if I didn't watch it, I wouldn't watch it before we recorded the pod, and then I'd have to make it up.
SPEAKER_07What was the worry? So I think you put Lawson in there one week, and I'm like, you finished 12th, dude. What are you doing?
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_07And I only watched the highlights.
SPEAKER_08Well, F1 Drive to describe on the tickety tick tick tock, the Instagram, and of course the YouTube if you're here, or Apple Spotify if you found us there. We appreciate any likes, ratings, subscribes, all that sort of stuff, comment, etc. Um, we will be back next week following the Madrid. The Mad Ring. Mad Ring. The Mad Ring Grand Prix, go on, Jake.
SPEAKER_05If you're watching on YouTube, have a comment to see who you think was the biggest shock. Um Kimmy Guns from 19th the first or um Gasly's Pole. Uh Gasly's Pole. Gasly's poll this time, not Stroll's poll. I've heard Gasly has a great pole work, so yeah.
SPEAKER_08Oh dear. Okay. That's interesting. F1, drive to the scrive.
SPEAKER_07Hashtag Stroll's poll. Yeah. Hashtag Mad Ring. Arriva Derchie.
SPEAKER_03Bye.
