- This is Katrin with Disability Rights New York. Welcome to our podcast, Empire State of Rights, where we bring you information on the most relevant topics regarding disability rights and advocacy. Today, we welcome Kirsten Sweeney, accessibility and inclusion manager at Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. They're here to discuss the importance of and growing need for accessibility coordination positions in the workplace, their career path, and future steps required to improve inclusion and equity for the disability community in the arts. Kirsten, thank you so much for joining us today.

- Thank you for having me. I'm excited to be here.

- Great. And before we start, we're going to give our self-descriptions. I am a woman in my early 50s. A white woman with brown, wavy hair. I have light-colored eyes, and I have on some pink earrings and a pink t-shirt today. Kirsten, would you be able to do the same and give a self-description and share with her audience a little bit more about yourself and the work you do?

- Yeah. So hi, I'm Kirsten. I'm a white, non-binary person with short, dark-colored hair. I have red-framed glasses on, and I have on a sort of forest green sweater today. And I work as the accessibility and inclusion manager at Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, which is a museum on the upper east side of New York City, one of the only Smithsonians in the city. And we are the only museum in the nation that focuses solely on historical and contemporary design. So as accessibility and inclusion manager there, I sort of touch every aspect of what the museum does, ensuring that our exhibitions are accessible as possible, ensuring that we have programs running for disabled visitors to come and access all that the museum has to offer, et cetera, et cetera. I also currently volunteer as one of the co-chairs of an organization called MAC, the Museum, Arts and Culture Access Consortium. And we are a collective of folks working across arts and culture in New York City. So in museums, theaters, other types of performing arts organizations, libraries, gardens, all of that. All folks who are interested in accessibility and disability activism, et cetera. Just sort of a place for folks to come together and learn from each other and share resources. So yeah, that's me.

- Thank you so much for all that information. And I feel like I want to like, pick apart each part of what you said so we can learn more about it. And if we can, let's start off about talking about your career path towards becoming an accessibility coordinator. Like, first, what attracted you to this type of position? And also, how this type of position actually came into being, right? Because not every industry or employer has this position. So talk to us a little bit about that.

- Yeah, so starting with sort of my own path, I, you know, from a very young age was always in love with the arts. I started doing theater at a very young age, and I knew that was something that, I sort of wanted to be a part of my life forever. I also, you know, from a very young age sort of knew that there was something different about me, but didn't at the time have language to really identify or describe what that was until as an adult I received an autism diagnosis. So as I was going into college and wanting to sort of work in the theater industry, and then after college entering the arts workforce with this sort of new disability identity, my main priority was ensuring that people like me who felt sort of marginalized or excluded, where like, arts spaces maybe weren't built for them, were able to engage with arts and culture, which is really something that I believe at least is a fundamental human right. To be able to participate in culture as fully as anybody else. So my first sort of accessibility focused role was at an organization called the Alliance of Resident Theatres in New York, which is an organization that provides a whole suite of amazing services to nonprofit theaters across New York City. And so through my role there, I was able to educate folks who were members of ART New York about what it meant to create accessible and inclusive theater environments, and got to connect with a lot of disabled artists and people across the field. And then it was through that that I got involved with MAC, got connected to folks doing this work in museum spaces, and found my way to Cooper Hewitt.

- Kristen, sorry, I wanted to stop and ask you something about what you just said, where you said not all spaces are necessarily built for accessibility, or for people who may have disabilities coming into them. Can you just expand a little bit on that? I feel like when we're talking about accessibility and we're talking about accommodations, there's often this, the way that the conversations are going are about, how can we make this space accessible for this person, as opposed to things maybe being built in an accessible way to begin with? So can you just talk a little bit about that?

- Yeah, I mean, I think, you know, looking sort of historically, disabled people were not considered really in any way in the physical design of our buildings, or in the sort of creation of the social spaces or the interpersonal spaces that we were in. You know, historically, disabled folks have been very much excluded from society. And I'm sure that's things that other folks have talked about on your podcast as well. But I think, especially being in New York City, just thinking about the buildings and the streets that are here, they are not built, for the most part, with accessibility in mind. And then the ADA came around, and folks started to have to make changes. And, you know, newer buildings maybe are a little bit more sort of up to code, at least in terms of base-level compliance, but I don't know that, beyond compliance, there is in a lot of spaces a real sense of like, an inclusive culture and a real understanding that people with experiences different from your own will be in the space that you're in. And so when non-disabled folks are almost always the ones in power, the ones making decisions about how spaces both physical and sort of social are shaped, and just sort of by nature, of their own lived experience, they aren't necessarily thinking about disabled people's experiences. So yeah. And I think that's also something this question of sort of changing existing spaces to make them accessible is one I've been thinking about a lot because I think that's great and really important. And also, what I've started to become really interested in is sort of exactly what you were saying, which is just generating spaces that are by default for disabled people. So that's what I'm really interested in and where I sort of see the field going as more people are starting to become aware of these kinds of conversations.

- I think that's such an important path and direction for the conversation to go in. And I think that will really tie in nicely for you to talk to us a little bit more about how you got to Cooper Hewitt, but also the role of an accessibility coordinator in and of itself, and why it's so important. Because as I said, initially, not necessarily every organization or every employer has one. And as you said earlier, people who are either making decisions or in power, people who are in the space that need an accommodation, and I would even, you know, I would even pull back from saying, a certain number of people, if we are building for accessibility, then it is accessible for everyone. As opposed to building for an exclusive part of a community now, and then accommodations are necessary. So to your point, if we don't have these accessibility coordinators in every industry or employer, how are those conversations going to be fully recognized? How are they going to be fully seen? So if you can talk about your experience and the importance of having an accessibility coordinator so that everyone really can have access.

- Yeah, I think this is like, a really complex question. So on a base level, yes, I think having at least one accessibility person on your staff, hopefully more, you know, someone whose role is 100% dedicated to accessibility, not accessibility and something else, which is also something that tends to happen to a lot of folks at arts organizations, in particular, where accessibility is sort of tacked on to everything else they already have to do. But when someone is truly dedicated to only doing that, and when your organization or your company is dedicating a salary amount of your budget to accessibility, like that, I think, just from the baseline, speaks to what you are valuing and prioritizing as an organization. Because a budget at the end of the day is a reflection of your values as an organization. And so I think just putting the money to it in the sense of we're gonna hire somebody to do this, I think, signals something to everybody else, both within your organization and outside, that this is something that we have a deeper commitment to. And then, of course, there is then somebody on the staff who can sort of maintain like, a bigger picture view, of what's going on, and sort of dream big about larger-scale accessibility projects. I find when there aren't accessibility staff at an organization, there might be a couple of staff who are just sort of individually passionate about making things accessible, maybe they're writing some alt texts for images or things like that, but it's hard to sort of create lasting, systemic change that way when it's just sort of little pockets of people. And I will just add sort of a caveat, which is that I do find accessibility coordinator positions sometimes to be a little bit of a double-edged sword, in the sense that when somebody is hired into that position, it can give everybody else at the organization permission to sort of step back and be like, "That's not my job," when it comes to accessibility. And so I think hiring that person, while also ensuring that there's buy-in across the entire organization that accessibility is everybody's responsibility and it's part of what we all do. I think when those two things can be married, there's like, real potential for great things to happen.

- I agree with you. And you talked a little bit about budget. You talked a little bit about systemic change. And both of those things are impacted by budget, right? I mean, if someone doesn't have the ability to hire a dedicated person to really be looking at accessibility and being an accessibility coordinator, as you said, really making sure that accessibility is an organization-wide or industry-wide thought process, you know, for me, it brings me to the place of the DIE space, right? And how there are a lot of organizations and employers who are bringing in consultants, or ensuring that they have some form of DIE coordination within their entire community. And oftentimes, disability is left out of that. And so one of the things that I've been interested in and really wanted to ask you about, considering this is your role, right, like, as an accessibility coordinator, this is your role, how is it that we can encourage employers to really start including disability in these conversations so it still is part of the thought process? It's the overall feeling and importance for the entire organization. What are some steps that employers can take on a small level, if they're a small company of 5 or 10 people, and even larger organizations? How can our organizations really be thoughtful about disability, especially when it comes to the inclusion conversation? If they feel like they don't have the budget to do it, how are some ways that we can look at doing that on a granular level that will have systemic change?

- Yeah. You know, that's the million-dollar question, for sure. I think everybody wants that perfect $0 solution to making things, 100% inclusive. And I think the place to start is within and like, really working from the inside out. And starting with conversation. And starting to build that buy-in and just that sort of level of understanding and just comfortability amongst your staff and the folks at your organization about even talking about disability. Understanding what it is, about understanding how prevalent it is. I guarantee you have disabled folks working at your organization. You know, whether or not they feel comfortable disclosing that I think speaks to potentially the level of inclusivity internally at your organization. Not that anybody ever has to disclose disability. But I think that as folks start talking to each other and learning more and really understanding that disabled people are not just like this, you know, minority, minority, who you never see and who never walks through your doors, if you're not seeing disabled folks walk through your doors, it's because you're not accessible. So I think building some of that buy-in organically is a great way to then make, just sort of start to shift the values of your organization from the inside. And eventually, as those values shift where you prioritize putting your money and spending your time applying for grants and things like that, might shift as well. But yeah, I find that in my work, one of the biggest barriers, and, you know, other folks who do accessibility work probably tell you the same thing, is lack of buy-in. So I think as opposed to, I mean, you know, starting with some of the small stuff, like getting alt text written for your images that you post on social media, and making sure you have accessibility information listed on your website, all of that is great, and you should do it, but to really, you know, have a holistic approach to inclusivity and to, you know, starting to foster like, a disability-affirming culture, that has to start from the inside, and people at your organization have to understand why they're doing these things. Yeah. I don't know if that answers your question.

- No, I think that's a great answer. And of course, I'm so glad you're here to give us the answer to the million-dollar question. And as we know, like, it's not that simple that there's just one answer, right? We're talking about people, and we're talking about organizations. And really, how you create a culture of buy-in is going to be also specific to the organization itself. And as you were talking, I was thinking about the reality of how a lot of people who maybe aren't necessarily familiar with the disability community, when they think about accommodation, they're thinking, "Oh wait, we need to put a ramp outside or something." Like, the go-to idea. Where when we talk about accessibility, especially now with technology really running the show, right? Like, technology is moving at such a high pace, and we're all trying to keep up with what's happening next. But if we aren't having alt text in images, and we're not making sure that our PDFs are readable, or how accessibility is, it's a such a large and vast industry that it's not a simple, okay, check the box here. It's how are we really making sure that every person has access to spaces, information, the ability to even Zoom, you know, I say Zoom, but the platforms that are out there to have virtual meetings? We saw that in the shutdown, right? When the pandemic happened, there were several other platforms that were being used, and I'm sure there still are, but there was definitely a lot of platforms that didn't have accessibility features built in. And now we see them really racing to, whether it's closed captioning AI that is becoming incredibly accurate, ensuring that there's a way to change contrast on your monitors or on your visuals of these. So as we think about accommodation, and we think about accessibility, this is a very large body of work. It's a big subject area, and it requires education. So I really do appreciate you giving your experience in this. As well as the bottom line is, people need to start really paying attention to and getting educated on how vast of a subject area this is. And so you have a very unique position in what you're doing with accessibility, because art in and of itself is presented through a multitude of mediums. And accommodations we were just talking about have to be diverse, and they have to adapt, and you don't want them to conflict with the artist's vision. So this is a really tall order for you. And I would love to hear you talk about that process and how you're really incorporating accommodations, as well as really thinking about the artist's vision. Talk to me about how that works and what your process is like, and how the success of that really has changed the way things are being presented.

- Yeah. It's definitely, yeah, a really tough, a tough question. And I think everybody who does accessibility work that also interacts with artists in any way, it's always a constant conversation. And I think for me, it really all goes back to buy-in, first of all. Like, I just can't sort of come blazing out the gate to all of these artists and curators that we have to do this, this, this, this, this thing, because then that makes accessibility feel like a burden. It feels like constraint. It feels like, oh, this is something we have to do. Like, it is not setting us up for success. Because then, you know, I'm gonna spend more meetings arguing with people about why we have to do simple things. But I try as much as I can to present accessibility to people as something exciting. Something that fosters creativity and like, it will allow us to think about the way we're presenting work in new and exciting ways. I think especially Cooper Hewitt being a design museum, I think we're in a really unique position because accessible design is good design. And, you know, like, let's think about really exciting and cool ways that we can showcase some innovative design that is also sort of radically inclusive and really welcomes people into an experience regardless of how they are accessing that experience. And that's sort of the blue sky, like, you know, ideal way that it will go. In reality, it's not always that perfect, that people are just like, "Yeah, let's go." You know, we're working on, often, quite a tight timeline when we're putting up exhibitions. And artists, rightfully so, do have a very specific vision about their work. And I am not one to tell somebody they have to fundamentally change their piece just to sort of make it accessible. So I try to understand what the artist's vision is and then talk through a variety of solutions. You know, if we have an artist who has a lot of video pieces that are going to be in exhibition, our sort of guidelines are every video has to have captions and audio description. But the way that we deliver that can change so that we make sure that we are still upholding the artist's vision. Instead of just having the sort of black bar, white caption at the bottom of the screen that, you know, maybe an artist might see as ugly or intrusive to their work, can we design captions that sort of integrate artistically into the piece? I've involved artists in drafting audio descriptions so that some of that language comes from them, and they can be describing their own work. And then, you know, that ultimately, now that artist has a greater understanding of accessibility, that they can move forward into their work and their career sort of beyond just working with us. And so, yeah, I do realize that I have a lot of responsibility in sort of helping people understand why this is important and how they can apply it to what they do. But when it sort of clicks, and we can come up with something really exciting, that's the best feeling,

- I can imagine that it is. I am thinking that, really, you're creating separate pieces of art as well, right? So if there's, especially when you're talking about closed captioning, and if there's a way that you can create something that maybe goes with the piece itself that is new or creative, I mean, you're furthering the way that art is also created. So I think that's just extraordinary. And I would love to hear maybe some from the artists, too, to see how they've felt about the process. And I wanna come back to, you know, at the beginning we talked a little bit about your path. We talked a little bit about how you got to be the accessibility coordinator, and you started to talk about MAC. And if I get this right, it's the Museum of Arts and Culture. Is that the acronym?

- It's the Museum, Arts and Culture Access Consortium. Really, it should be MACAC, but it started just as the Museum Access Consortium, and then when the group expanded to include, like, all of the arts and culture field, they kept the acronym, so yeah.

- Okay. Well, thank you for the correction on that. 'Cause I wrote it down, I'm like, "That can't be. I know that's not everything that she said it was." So-

- All good.

- And so if you could, please, talk about your work at MAC, and share with us about its mission and how really this mission has been part of your experience.

- Yeah. So MAC's mission is really to foster a more accessible, inclusive, disability-affirming arts and culture space in New York City. The organization started 30 years ago just as a small group of museum access workers, who came together to meet monthly and share resources, talk about their experiences. Just sort of be a community together. Because often this work can get very lonely. You know, I am the sole accessibility person working at Cooper Hewitt. Some museums, larger museums, might have larger staff. Some don't. And so it's really nice to be able to share with other folks, you know, other peers doing this work. And then over time, the group has grown in scope significantly. Of course, now, we're not just museum-focused, it's arts and culture more broadly. We still, you know, try to maintain that sort of spirit of connecting accessibility professionals to each other and being a space where folks can share resources and ideas and just sort of commiserate about the kind of work that we do. But we also try to do a lot to support disabled folks specifically working in the field, disabled artists, and especially folks who are trying to enter the field and enter the arts and culture workforce. Because I think that it's really important for disabled folks to be making these changes to the arts and culture field, and to have the power to, you know, to lead this sort of new direction that the field will be going in. And so we have a program at MAC called Supporting Transitions that specifically supports adults, who are autistic or have other intellectual developmental disabilities, to enter the arts and culture workforce. And the reason to really focus on sort of this community specifically is because of sort of what's called the services cliff that a lot of these folks face when they leave school. So a lot of folks with intellectual and developmental disabilities receive a lot of services while they're in school. Might also be in the school system a little longer than their non-disabled peers. And then once they graduate, all of the services they receive just stop. And that's the services cliff that we're talking about. And so Supporting Transitions really sprang into being as a way to support that transition. To sort of build a bridge across that cliff so that folks can leave school and have a pathway to entering the workforce, if that's something that they're interested in doing. So we have an internship program that pairs, you know, interns with arts and culture organizations. Those interns receive a one-on-one job coach and training and things like that. And then the organizations also receive training on how to foster an inclusive workplace, and how to, yeah, just be more accessible and welcoming. Because we're not trying to place folks into an environment where they can't succeed. We also have a program called the Self-Advocate Corps. Corps, C-O-R-P-S. So a group of folks who have been trained to essentially be professional self-advocates. So to become consultants and to be paid to speak about their experience and help other organizations improve their accessibility work. And yeah, lots of other little things. I don't have to give the whole spiel. But yeah, just doing what we can to make sure that the sort of new generation coming into the workforce is equipped with the skills to succeed.

- And we will put the contact information in the notes of the podcast so people can reach out and connect. What a great organization. And I wanna just finish off. I wanna hear if there's anything else that is going on at Cooper that you wanna talk to us about. But we talked a little bit about technology, we talked a little bit about the shutdown, and we talked about education mostly, right? And how really helping the general population become more aware of the disability community. Have you seen, say, you know, if we say here, you know, in 2023 we've been maybe out of the shutdown, post shutdown for maybe 18 months, it's hard for me to even say because there was such a wobbly line, really, about what the shutdown meant for a lot of people. But, say, we're post shutdown for even a year, we could say it was even a year. In your experience, have you seen any awareness that has improved since then? Or has it been very obvious that there are areas that still require education? And just from your experience. It's something that I find very interesting, as we saw an entire globe become very aware of accessibility and being able to work from home, as well as being exposed to sign language on a regular basis. So just from your experience, have you seen any areas that have improved, or some that really still need a lot of education?

- Yeah, I mean, there's definitely been improvement. I think, like you said, people are just generally more aware that disabled people exist and what accessibility is. I think the need for things like captions and ASL interpretation, like you said, alt text on images, the kinds of things that are very sort of visible and straightforward, people sort of know that those exist. Beyond the sort of surface level, I think a lot still needs to be done. I don't know that a lot of people are really in the place to think about what an inclusive world would truly look like in the sense of doing anything that actually disrupts sort of the status quo that they're used to. And we've seen this over the past few years with the public's response to COVID. You know, everybody was all-- or not everybody, but a lot of people were ready to wear masks, ready to meet virtually, work from home, et cetera, for, you know, a year or so. And coming out of that, it's like, oh, we could have learned a lot of great public health practices that made our entire world more accessible for folks who are immunocompromised, who maybe are housebound, who can't, you know, who for decades and centuries prior had been asking for these kinds of things and weren't receiving them, and how quickly all of that disappeared when non-disabled people got tired of it. And yeah, so I don't know that people are yet sort of ready to be uncomfortable and to like, make some of the more meaningful changes that are actually needed to build like, a truly diverse and inclusive society. You know, change is slow, and the needle has shifted a millimeter to one side or the other. But yeah, I think-- I think it's true for all sort of anti-oppression movements that like, the folks who are in the positions of privilege and positions of power, and I don't just mean like, leaders of organization, I mean position of power in the sense that being non-disabled is a position of power in itself. And like, folks need to, I think, get a little bit more comfortable with being uncomfortable and with understanding what it means to accommodate others. And to not just have every space accommodate 100% your needs, but to really be thinking about other people's needs as well.

- I really appreciate that. Thank you so much. That's a really well-thought-out response. I really appreciate being able to look at it from that perspective. There's so much that we can look back on and observe as, you know, if everyone maybe had the awareness that they had at that initial moment and carried that through, maybe we would see a little bit more of long-term change. And so before we do sign off, is there anything that's happening at Cooper Hewitt that you wanna let us know about, or at MACAC, and I'll just say that now, that you wanna let our audience know about? And we can put links in our notes to any events coming up. Is there anything you wanna talk to us about today?

- Absolutely. Yeah, I'll start with MAC, actually, because we just spent the past couple of years sort of throughout the pandemic really undergoing a deep strategic planning process and rethinking who we are as an organization to hopefully start to become a more equitable, sustainable organization, and most importantly, to stop relying solely on volunteers to run our organization. And so we've just sort of newly announced ourselves as the new and still becoming MAC, but we are looking for more folks to join our community, to get involved, whether, you know, just as a member, to sort of access our services, or to join a committee and have a little bit more involvement in our programs and our advocacy and things like that. So yeah, I'll share a link that has some more information about ways you can get involved. But if you are somebody who has a connection to New York City and is passionate about disability in the arts and culture space, I think MAC is a really great place for you. And yeah, Cooper Hewitt, we have a couple of great accessible exhibitions up at the moment. One is called "Give Me a Sign: The Language of Symbols." It's open through September 2024. And lots of great tactile elements built into that exhibition. We have a descriptive audio tour, and it'll take you through how 2D symbols have been designed. Our other exhibition that's open right now, "A Dark A Light A Bright: The Designs of Dorothy Liebes," open through February 2024, explores the life of textile designer Dorothy Liebes. We have a couple of verbal description tours coming up for that show. You'll have the opportunity to feel some fabrics in the style of Dorothy Liebes. I will share the information with you, Katrin. So the dates and links and all of that will be in the description. And then on November 18th, we have a brand-new exhibition opening, "The Atlas of Es Devlin," which explores the work of sort of legendary stage and spectacle designer Es Devlin, and is a really cool, immersive experience. Yeah, that's what we've got going on.

Si podemos, empecemos hablando de tu trayectoria profesional para convertirte en coordinadora de accesibilidad. Primero, ¿qué te atrajo a este tipo de puesto? Y también, cómo se creó este tipo de puesto, ¿verdad? Porque no todas las industrias o empleadores lo tienen. Háblanos un poco al respecto.

- Sí, comenzando con mi trayectoria, desde joven siempre estuve enamorada de las artes. Empecé a hacer teatro desde muy joven y sabía que era algo que quería que formara parte de mi vida para siempre. También, desde muy joven, supe que había algo diferente en mí, pero en ese momento no tenía el lenguaje para identificar o describir lo que era, hasta que de adulta recibí un diagnóstico de autismo. Cuando me disponía a ingresar a la universidad y quería trabajar en la industria teatral, y después de la universidad, entrar en el mundo laboral de las artes con esta nueva identidad de discapacidad, mi principal prioridad era asegurarme de que personas como yo, que se sentían marginadas o excluidas, donde espacios artísticos quizás no estaban diseñados para ellas, pudieran participar en el arte y la cultura, lo cual considero un derecho humano fundamental. Poder participar en la cultura plenamente, al igual que cualquier otra persona. Mi primer papel centrado en la accesibilidad fue en una organización llamada Alliance of Resident Theatres en Nueva York, que es una organización que brinda una amplia gama de servicios increíbles a teatros sin fines de lucro en toda la ciudad de Nueva York. - Sí, creo, que es algo muy complejo desde una perspectiva histórica. Las personas con discapacidad no fueron consideradas de ninguna manera en el diseño físico de nuestros edificios ni en la creación de espacios sociales o interpersonales en los que nos encontrábamos. Históricamente, las personas con discapacidad han sido excluidas de la sociedad. Estoy segura de que esto es algo de lo que otros han hablado en tu podcast también. Pero creo que, especialmente estando en Nueva York, al pensar en los edificios y las calles que existen aquí, en su mayoría no están construidos teniendo en cuenta la accesibilidad. Luego llegó la Ley de Estadounidenses con Discapacidades, y las personas comenzaron a tener que realizar cambios. Y es posible que los edificios más nuevos estén un poco más actualizados en términos de cumplimiento con el código, al menos en cuanto a la normativa básica. Pero no sé si más allá del cumplimiento, en muchos espacios existe una verdadera sensación de cultura inclusiva y una comprensión real de que personas con experiencias diferentes a las tuyas estarán en el espacio en el que te encuentras. Cuando las personas sin discapacidad son casi siempre las que tienen el poder, las que toman decisiones sobre cómo se configuran los espacios, tanto físicos como sociales, y, simplemente, por la naturaleza de su propia experiencia, es posible que no estén pensando necesariamente en las experiencias de las personas con discapacidad. Así que sí. Y creo que también esta cuestión de cambiar espacios existentes para hacerlos accesibles es algo en lo que he estado pensando mucho, porque creo que es genial y realmente importante. Y también, he empezado a interesarme realmente en exactamente lo que mencionaste, que es generar espacios que sean por defecto para las personas con discapacidad. Eso es lo que realmente me interesa y donde veo que se dirige el campo a medida que más personas comienzan a ser conscientes de este tipo de conversaciones.

- Creo que es un camino y una dirección muy importantes para que avance la conversación. Y creo que esto se relacionará muy bien contigo al hablarnos un poco más sobre cómo llegaste a Cooper Hewitt, pero también el papel de un coordinador de accesibilidad en sí y por qué es tan importante. Porque, como dije inicialmente, no necesariamente todas las organizaciones o empleadores tienen uno. Y como mencionaste anteriormente, las personas que toman decisiones o tienen el poder, las personas que necesitan una adaptación, e incluso retrocedería al decir que un cierto número de personas, si estamos construyendo para la accesibilidad, entonces es accesible para todos. - Sí, creo que esta es una pregunta realmente compleja. En un nivel básico, sí, creo que tener al menos una persona de accesibilidad en tu personal, ojalá alguien cuyo rol esté 100 % dedicado a la accesibilidad, no accesibilidad y algo más, lo cual también tiende a sucederle a muchas personas en organizaciones artísticas en particular, donde la accesibilidad se añade a todo lo demás que ya tienen que hacer. Pero cuando alguien está dedicado a hacer solo eso, y cuando tu organización o empresa está destinando una parte de tu presupuesto a la accesibilidad, eso, creo, desde la base, habla de lo que estás valorando y priorizando como organización. Porque el presupuesto al final del día refleja los valores de tu organización. - Sí, esa es la pregunta del millón, sin duda. Creo que todos quieren esa solución perfecta de $0 para hacer que las cosas sean 100 % inclusivas. Y creo, que el lugar para comenzar es desde adentro y trabajar desde adentro hacia afuera. Y empezar con la conversación. Y comenzar a construir ese compromiso y ese nivel de comprensión y comodidad entre tu personal y las personas de tu organización sobre la discapacidad. Entender qué es, entender cuán prevalente es. Te garantizo que tienes personas con discapacidad trabajando en tu organización. Si sienten o no se sienten cómodas revelando eso, creo que puede hablar, potencialmente, del nivel de inclusión interna en tu organización. No es que nadie tenga que revelar la discapacidad. Pero creo que a medida que las personas comienzan a hablar entre ellas y a aprender más y realmente entender que las personas con discapacidad no son simplemente una minoría, una minoría a la que nunca ves y que nunca cruza tus puertas, si no ves a personas con discapacidad cruzando tus puertas, es porque no eres accesible. Así que creo que construir algo de ese compromiso de manera orgánica es una excelente manera de empezar a cambiar los valores de tu organización desde adentro. Y eventualmente, a medida que esos valores cambien, es posible que también cambie la priorización de dónde destinas tu dinero y el tiempo que dedicas a solicitar subvenciones y cosas por el estilo. Pero sí, en mi trabajo, una de las barreras más grandes, y probablemente otras personas que trabajan en accesibilidad te dirán lo mismo, es la falta de compromiso. - No, creo que es una excelente respuesta. Y, me alegra que estés aquí para darnos la respuesta a la pregunta del millón. Y, como sabemos, no es tan simple que haya una sola respuesta, ¿verdad? Estamos hablando de personas y organizaciones. Y cómo se crea una cultura de compromiso también va a ser específico de la organización en sí. Y mientras hablabas, pensaba en la realidad de cómo muchas personas que quizás no están familiarizadas con la comunidad de discapacitados, cuando piensan en la adaptación, están pensando: "Oh, esperen, debemos poner una rampa afuera o algo así". Esa es la idea predefinida. Cuando hablamos de accesibilidad, especialmente ahora que la tecnología es la que manda, ¿verdad? La tecnología avanza a un ritmo muy alto, y todos estamos tratando de mantenernos al día con lo que va a suceder. Pero si no tenemos texto alternativo en las imágenes y no nos aseguramos de que nuestros PDF sean legibles, o cómo es la accesibilidad, es un campo tan grande y vasto que no es simplemente un proceso de marcar una casilla. Se trata de cómo nos aseguramos de que cada persona tenga acceso a espacios, información, la capacidad de incluso Zoom, digo Zoom, pero las plataformas que están disponibles para tener reuniones virtuales. Lo vimos durante la pandemia, ¿verdad? Cuando ocurrió la pandemia, había varias otras plataformas que se estaban utilizando, y estoy segura de que todavía las hay, pero definitivamente había muchas plataformas que no tenían funciones de accesibilidad integradas. Y ahora los vemos compitiendo realmente, ya sea con inteligencia artificial de subtítulos en vivo que se está volviendo increíblemente precisa, asegurándose de que haya una forma de cambiar el contraste en tus monitores o en tus visuales de estos. - Sí, definitivamente, es una pregunta difícil. Y creo que para todos los que trabajan en accesibilidad y que también interactúan de alguna manera con artistas, es una conversación constante. Y para mí, todo se reduce, en primer lugar, a obtener la aprobación. No puedo simplemente llegar a todos estos artistas y comisarios y decirles que debemos hacer esto, esto, esto, esto, porque entonces la accesibilidad se convierte en una carga. Se siente como una restricción. Se siente como si esto fuera algo que tenemos que hacer. No nos está preparando para el éxito. Porque entonces, pasaré más tiempo discutiendo en reuniones con la gente sobre por qué debemos hacer cosas simples. - Sí. La misión de MAC es realmente fomentar un espacio de arte y cultura más accesible, inclusivo y que afirme la discapacidad en la ciudad de Nueva York. La organización comenzó hace 30 años como un pequeño grupo de trabajadores de acceso a museos que se reunían mensualmente para compartir recursos, hablar sobre sus experiencias y simplemente ser una comunidad unida. Porque a menudo este trabajo puede ser muy solitario. Soy la única persona de accesibilidad que trabaja en Cooper Hewitt. Algunos museos más grandes pueden tener un personal más grande. Otros no. Y es realmente agradable poder compartir con otras personas, otros colegas que hacen este trabajo. Y con el tiempo, el grupo ha crecido significativamente en alcance. Por supuesto, ahora no estamos enfocados solo en museos, es el arte y la cultura de manera más amplia. Así que en MAC tenemos un programa llamado "Apoyando Transiciones" que apoya específicamente a adultos autistas o con otras discapacidades intelectuales y del desarrollo para ingresar a la fuerza laboral de las artes y la cultura. Y la razón para enfocarse realmente en esta comunidad específica es debido a lo que se llama el "abismo de servicios" que enfrentan muchas de estas personas cuando salen de la escuela. Muchas personas con discapacidades intelectuales y del desarrollo reciben muchos servicios mientras están en la escuela. Es posible que también estén en el sistema escolar un poco más de tiempo que sus compañeros no discapacitados. Y una vez que se gradúan, todos los servicios que reciben simplemente se detienen. Y ese es el abismo de servicios del que estamos hablando. Así que "Apoyando Transiciones" surgió como una forma de apoyar esa transición. Construir un puente sobre ese abismo para que las personas puedan dejar la escuela y tener un camino para ingresar a la fuerza laboral, si eso es algo en lo que están interesadas. Tenemos un programa de pasantías que empareja a los pasantes con organizaciones de arte y cultura. Esos becarios reciben un entrenador laboral personal y capacitación, y cosas por el estilo. Y las organizaciones también reciben capacitación sobre cómo fomentar un lugar de trabajo inclusivo y cómo ser más accesibles y acogedoras. Porque no estamos tratando de ubicar a las personas en un entorno donde no puedan tener éxito. También tenemos un programa llamado Self-Advocate Corps. Corps, C-O-R-P-S. Un grupo de personas que ha sido entrenado para ser autodefensores profesionales, para convertirse en consultores y ser remunerados por hablar sobre su experiencia y ayudar a otras organizaciones a mejorar su trabajo en accesibilidad. - Sí, definitivamente ha habido mejoras. Creo que, como mencionaste, las personas en general son más conscientes de que existen personas con discapacidad y de lo que es la accesibilidad. Creo que la necesidad de cosas como subtítulos e interpretación de lenguaje de señas, como mencionaste, texto alternativo en imágenes, cosas que son muy visibles y directas, las personas saben que existen. Más allá del nivel superficial, creo que aún falta mucho por hacer. No sé si muchas personas están realmente en posición de pensar en cómo sería un mundo inclusivo de verdad en el sentido de hacer algo que realmente interrumpa el statu quo al que están acostumbradas. Hemos visto esto en los últimos años con la respuesta del público a COVID. Todos, o no todos, estaban listos para usar mascarillas, listos para reunirse virtualmente, trabajar desde casa, etc., durante un año o algo así. Y, al salir de eso, es como, "Oh, podríamos haber aprendido muchas prácticas de salud pública que habrían hecho que nuestro mundo fuera más accesible para las personas con sistemas inmunológicos comprometidos, que tal vez están confinadas en sus hogares, que no pueden, que durante décadas y siglos habían estado pidiendo estas cosas y no las recibían", y cuánto desapareció todo eso rápidamente cuando las personas no discapacitadas se cansaron de ello. Y sí, no sé si las personas están listas aún para sentirse incómodas y para hacer algunos de los cambios más significativos que realmente son necesarios para construir una sociedad verdaderamente diversa e inclusiva. El cambio es lento, y la aguja se ha movido un milímetro hacia un lado o hacia el otro. Y no tener cada espacio acomodando al 100 % tus necesidades, sino realmente pensar en las necesidades de otras personas también.

- Lo aprecio mucho. Muchas gracias. Esa es una respuesta muy bien pensada. Realmente aprecio poder verlo desde esa perspectiva. Hay mucho en lo que podemos reflexionar y observar, y es que si todos tuvieran la conciencia que tenían en ese momento inicial y la llevaran consigo, tal vez veríamos un poco más de cambio a largo plazo.
