Speaker 1:

This is PGA Tour Countdown. Welcome in everybody. It's Frank Bassett joining you for PGA Tour Countdown and Sanderson Farms is in the books. We've left Jackson Mississippi Dog on it. Love it down there. Great golf course too and a great tournament this past week.

Speaker 1:

Luke List is your winner and a big playoff I mean a shootout playoff which was really good and exciting and congratulations to Luke. He spent a little time here in Nashville, tennessee, I would think, kind of Vanderbilt type guy, and it's just great for he and his family. He's been through a lot. He's had some injuries, he's back. His wife and two beautiful children were there on the green with the trophy in his hands congratulating him and it was very touching, especially when you kind of know some of those guys. So let's get right to it. We're going to bring you some brief interviews not long form, but brief interviews from the playoff participants and let you see what you think. The last one you'll hear will be, of course, luke List, and then we'll kind of wrap this thing up and put a bow on it and get ready for this next week on the PGA Tour as we count down our way to 2024.

Speaker 4:

Henrik, you've talked all week about how you've been on top of your game and you felt good and you put yourself in that position and you got into that playoff and when it's a five man shootout, it really is.

Speaker 5:

It's a third time in a five man playoff One's on this tour and one's on the cornfair tour.

Speaker 4:

Sea Island and Vichita, and then here. Where was the one on the cornfair?

Speaker 5:

tour Vichita. I won that one though.

Speaker 4:

So what was that experience like today, finding yourself.

Speaker 5:

I mean I had a lead. I know that Just got stuck two days in a row in 14 between two clubs. Yesterday the two ironed, tried to hit it too hard and pulled it, unfortunately, and then today I couldn't get two ironed, there Three wouldn't hit a pretty good shot, it just didn't cut. But I mean it happens.

Speaker 4:

You said that was on 14 or five.

Speaker 5:

Yeah, I had an aster two days in a row, but you know I made some serious butts this week. I had some unbelievable shots. I fought hard. I got tied after the bogey on 16 and I had a terrible drive. I got lucky kicked out in fairway and then I had a terrible second shot in the left bunker the only place you can hit it and probably the best bunker shot of my life. To get that up and down. And then part 18, he played hard and you know I'm super proud. I went from thinking I wasn't good enough to play this tour to actually believe I can win out here. So things happened. It changed quickly.

Speaker 4:

Well, you've been smiling during this interview, so obviously there's a lot of positives to take out of this.

Speaker 5:

I mean, it stinks not to get this one, but Luc List, I was glad that he was the one that got it. We played golf every day when we were home. He's a great friend, he's a big inspiration. I mean we help each other a lot and you know I wanted to win. But if someone else is going to win, I'm happy for Luc.

Speaker 4:

Appreciate it. Thanks for coming back. Keep it real quick. When you finished at 18 under, you know everybody thinks they have a chance. You know, and how was that situation for you? Hanging around?

Speaker 7:

To be fair, I thought whenever I was on the golf course that 18 wasn't going to make it. I figured I was probably going to need to get to 2021 to have a reasonable chance. But you know, it ended up the way it did and I was very fortunate for that. But you know, congrats to Luc for the last part. It's unbelievable and you know, cute us to him.

Speaker 4:

Assuming you've never been part of a five-way playoff before. No, I'm not. What was that experience like?

Speaker 7:

It was cool. I mean, we played a lot of five-somes in college, you know. Just our buddies got out playing and you know it was a cool experience for me. I feel like a lot of these things that I'm doing at the moment are kind of the first time I'm doing it, so hopefully I'll be able to learn from it and, you know, next time I'll be better off.

Speaker 4:

And next time might come soon. How good will it taste, how good will it feel when you finally get there.

Speaker 7:

Yeah, I mean absolutely. I mean I think playing those last couple of holes when you're in contention, when you're closer to the lead or chasing down the lead, it's the most fun you'll ever have on a golf course. And it's very true. I had that experience in Switzerland a couple of weeks ago and I just want to do it again, and again, and again. Hopefully I'll be able to do it soon again. But first off, congrats to Luke and hope he celebrates accordingly. I appreciate your time.

Speaker 4:

Band 9, it's a tough way to finish, probably a lot of disappointment there, but you still got to be pretty satisfied with the entire week.

Speaker 8:

Yeah, I just got a little loose out there today. It was a grind pretty much all day. I didn't really have a ton of control. I kind of had a little spark there in the middle. I had some good up and downs on the back nine to kind of keep myself in it. It was a little disappointed. I missed a left on 18. I hit the wrong shot at the wrong time. I needed to keep it low with the wind up there and I chose a club that I was hitting it high. I wish I had maybe taken a little bit more time and really thought through the shot. I felt like maybe I didn't think through it enough. So it's a bummer. I learned a lot from Bermuda and I thought I was going to still be able to get it done today. It just sucks. That's all it is. I get to play golf for a living.

Speaker 4:

Just hitting that one shot at the wrong time. That sounds like the main thing that you learned today. Was there anything else during the round that you had some feelings inside that you hadn't experienced before?

Speaker 8:

Yeah, not necessarily. Obviously there's nerves. It's Sunday. Your body always feels different on Sundays, but I felt like my golf physical standpoint. I was still in a good place. I just didn't hit very good shots pretty much all day. I got out of position a lot and I saved bogeys when I needed to. Maybe I got a tough break here there with Plugged Live. Whatever it may be, it's hard closing out on the PGA Tour. I should have got it done. It's a bummer, but I'll be back.

Speaker 3:

So much to be proud of and look at.

Speaker 9:

Can you share, maybe one thing that you are proud of.

Speaker 8:

Yeah, my name is on top of the leaderboard for a good chunk of it. There's a lot of positives, but it's a 72-hole tournament every single week. It really doesn't matter what happens until the finals scores get posted on Sunday. Yeah, a lot of positives. My game is in a good spot. It's rewarding to know that this offseason wasn't as bad as I thought it might have been. From getting ready for a tournament per se, I felt like last week I grinded pretty hard, but I've got the game, I've got the talent. I just got to be really strong down the stretch moving forward.

Speaker 5:

And just one more for me. You had some of your support system here when you came off the green. What does it mean to you to have them here?

Speaker 3:

and just be able to embrace them and see them after this.

Speaker 8:

Yeah, it's just emotional. They wanted me to win more than I probably wanted to. It's just a bummer, but I'm so happy to have everyone, all of them, in my life. They have my back and I know I'm going to be back.

Speaker 6:

Thanks. Okay, we'll get started. We welcome the champion of the 2023 Sanderson Farms Championship, luke List. Luke, what a day that was. If we can get you to recap the day and what's going through your head right now, yeah, it's been an interesting last hour.

Speaker 9:

You know, starting the day I kind of had a number in mind and I think that kind of hindered my play early on. So then I tried to just free it up and my ball strike really wasn't there this weekend but I was able to really scramble nicely and make some putts. And then I was just mentioning it's very challenging to win out here and you know, ben played great but 16-18 were playing difficult. So just to have the opportunity to get in the playoff, I felt like, wow, okay, this is a gift. And then my mindset just switched into okay, let's try to make birdie anyway. I didn't hit the best iron shot, but I told my caddy I was like I'm making this and it just somehow rolled it in.

Speaker 6:

And take us through the playoff. Just that one hole with five players.

Speaker 9:

Yeah, I was in the playoff a couple of years ago in Torrey Pines, so I'm familiar with that and was able to kind of harness my emotions and hit a nice drive. I felt really comfortable in that moment. And then, just once you get on the green, I mean I've been rolling it well and I hit really good putts in the last three in regulation. So to kind of just pick my line and just kind of get in the moment and just trust the line, it was awesome to see it go in.

Speaker 6:

You won first time on the tour in 2022. Now again, just talk a little bit now about what this does for you, and then also just your plans now for the rest of the fall.

Speaker 9:

Yeah, it obviously opens up a lot of doors. You know the Century and Maui and Augusta and some stuff. So I was just really happy with the way I hung in there mentally throughout the weekend without my A-game per se golf swing. Usually in the past I would kind of fold up and get a little frustrated and I was able to just hang in there. My caddy did a fantastic job on keeping me present and I'm just very fortunate to come out on top.

Speaker 6:

I think you even gave your hat away after regulation, so you really were not thinking playoff was in your future.

Speaker 9:

Yeah, no, then I kind of heard Ben Medabogi, which is tough, on 16 and he had a heck of a week. So yeah, just I was not expecting it when I posted 18 under and you know, hinderic Norland was one of my best friends and he hated to see you know he had a great putt on 18 and he played well all day. So to see you know him playing really well again, I'm happy for you know again, but it's a tough game and I was happy to come on top.

Speaker 6:

And before questions I know winning this tournament too, steve Jents tournament here means a lot to you as well.

Speaker 9:

Yeah, I mean I've always liked this golf course. I've had one other good finish I think it finished second the year, time for second maybe the year Cody Gribble won and then a couple other decent finishes. So I love the golf course. It's always in fantastic shape and Steve Jents is just such a fantastic guy and he does work so hard to get the field as good as it could. And this tournament is so sleepy under the radar and I think it's one of the best tournaments to play all year.

Speaker 2:

Alright, let's start with questions. I'm curious if you could just take us through kind of your emotions there, after everyone's done with their putting you know your family runs out onto the green what that moment was kind of like for you.

Speaker 9:

Yeah, you know, I think all my emotions kind of came out after that punt and then it was just shock really still. But to have them there means everything. And you know the last one, my son was a little smaller and he's starting to get into golf a little bit. But just my wife, she's incredible and her steadiness and perseverance to keep me level and positive is a job in itself. So you know, at 38, I'm not that young anymore and I feel like I do have some good golf within me and it's just tough sometimes backing myself and she's always got my back. So it was really special having her and my kids.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, kind of to follow up on that too. I mean, you know your story is well documented about. You know what you guys went through with your son as well, and this is a tournament that works. You know really closely with your children's hospital, mississippi. Just how much does it mean to you know win specifically at this event for that reason.

Speaker 9:

Yeah, it's fantastic and I know there's some. You know the RSM does the breeze for love and the charity you know, and that's why we play, you know, to give back. I mean, the game gives us so much in these moments and this platform, but ultimately, you know, it's using our exposure and our platform to give back to those that need it and for this tournament to have a charity like that it really rings home for me just having, you know, both our kids in the Chones Hospital of Georgia and in our hometown of Augusta. So there's a lot of families that need our help there locally and we're trying to give back as much as we can.

Speaker 6:

Any other questions? Yep, let's go right over here on the left.

Speaker 3:

Come over here and congratulations, luke, thank you, just wondering. When you're playing, you know, golf a lot is a long game, four rounds. Is there any kind of mentality or quote or thought, that kind of sticks with you, that just guides you, and especially when you get to a playoff at the end?

Speaker 9:

Yeah, I mean it's once you get inside the ropes it's you kind of switch on because you've got too much to work. You know focus on. So I think you know I was a little antsy a little bit Friday night playing well and knew my game was in good shape and maybe left a few out there. Yesterday and today I was just like okay, just free it up as much as I could. But you know, got a rocky start, a little bit bogey in two. But you know, I think my mentality is just put one foot in the front of the other and just keep going and try to birdie the next hole. And you know, you never know what can happen. Obviously, watching how it unfolded I mean, like I said, I never thought I was even gonna make a playoff, so to be sitting here is pretty unbelievable.

Speaker 3:

Mississippi is a state that I found is known for its baseball and football. Obviously, this is a big golf event that puts it on the map too. What do you like about this course specifically and stands out to you when you're playing, maybe compared to others?

Speaker 9:

Yeah, I mean obviously the green standout. They're probably the most pure Bermuda green soup play. So this time of year, pretty consistent, you know, they usually have a little bit of rough. That makes it makes it premium on hit in the fairways, and then the weather's nice too. So we, you know it's such a, it's such a consistent, well run event and to have the charity and the fan support and then just the overall experience is just such a great, great one. For me personally. Now it's even better.

Speaker 2:

We were talking to Mackenzie Hughes earlier this week about the conversation starter in his house that that trophy is, I guess. How excited are you about and how unique is that to add your collection?

Speaker 9:

Yeah, I'm very excited Cause my daughter's been kind of on me, it's time to win another trophy and she really enjoyed the surf board, tori Pines, and I told her earlier in the week there was a rooster chicken or whatever you want to call so it. She's pretty excited, so I think we'll have to get her a little mini version of it too for her for that. But it's nice to have your kids present and old enough to kind of appreciate it and then share with them, and I'm very fortunate.

Speaker 6:

Yeah, let's go over here to Chris.

Speaker 9:

So I'm interested about the hat exchange. Did you sign the hat when you gave it away? Well, the first time, no, I hadn't. The kid had just said can I please have it? I'm kind of a sucker for kids saying please and thank you. You'd be surprised how often you don't hear that out on the road.

Speaker 9:

But usually in the south you get some good kids. So the young kid I told him. I said hey, but I'm sorry to have to get this back. I think there might be a chance of a playoff. And even when I said it then I didn't really believe it. I just kind of go through the motions going down there and then when he hit it just in the rough there on 18, I was like okay, maybe there's a chance. So I did find him right after the playoff or after the trophy presentation, was able to give him the hat back. So I didn't sign it yet. If you know, I'm afraid I can get him a signed hat later. What would have been the contingency if you hadn't found him? I've got another hat in the locker room so it would have been into the world, but that one did me right. So it was nice to have that one for the playoff.

Speaker 6:

And then you talked a little bit about the playoff. Just take us, what did you see exactly in that putt? It's one you'll remember for a long time.

Speaker 9:

Yeah, I hit it shorter off the tee than in regulation so I actually had a better number and didn't hit his. I actually had a really good shot in regulation and it was long, so it was a perfect number and it was kind of pin highish. But my speed's been really good all week. I think maybe I had one or two three putts, but just really good speed and just really dialed into my spot and that's all I did. I was thinking about rolling it over that spot and it was downhill and the greens were so perfect, breaking right to left and hitting my spot.

Speaker 6:

And now you're heading to Vegas. What is your schedule the rest of the fall?

Speaker 9:

Yeah, I'm not really sure what changes as far as that. I'll definitely go to Vegas because I like that golf course too and it's a phenomenal charity. Again, I like that tournament and I like my chances there on that golf course. So I'm going to go try to give my mind right and compete and enjoy this for my time being and then play Vegas, and then we'll reassess from there.

Speaker 6:

Okay.

Speaker 3:

One more question, just one more. I'm on this side this time. I'm graduating from Vanderbilt, is that correct? That's right, you know SEC, obviously big in the south here too. What do you remember? Maybe something you learned from playing at Vanderbilt in the SEC and everything that still helps you today as a professional?

Speaker 9:

Yeah, I learned not to get my hopes up for football, but you know, tongue in cheek. It's such a great school and we have a lot of other programs that are easy to root for for the wins. But you know, coach Lee did his fantastic job. I obviously still root for them. It's just a tough, tough conference to compete in. As you guys all know is Mississippi State Ole Miss guys. It's a challenging conference. But yeah, I love my time in Nashville and wouldn't trade it for the world, and their golf program now is fantastic Top five consistently. Coach Limbaugh does a great job, so I love following them and supporting them as well.

Speaker 6:

Alright. Well, luke, we appreciate your time and congratulations once again.

Speaker 9:

Thank you guys.

Speaker 1:

So there you have it. You've heard from them and we are ready to roll on down the road to the next PGA Tour stop. Pga Tour Countdown will join you later this week with a PGA Tour Countdown show, as opposed to a wrap show this week and then wrap it up again. A lot going on in the world and we want to wish everybody safe travels all over the world, wherever you may go. God bless each and every one of you. We really appreciate you listening to PGA Tour Countdown and please, if you haven't downloaded a hundred times, come on, let's beat this thing up and really get it kicking. Get it going.
