Skip Nipper’s Nashville Baseball Podcast

Author Keith Wood and the Memphis Red Sox, Part One

Skip Nipper Season 3 Episode 47

Keith Wood landed a position in the Memphis City School District at Sheffield High after college. He moved to Millington Central High School in northwest Shelby County while completing his master's in history at the University of Memphis.

Currently teaching at Christian Brothers High School in Memphis, that role allowed returning to grad school and completing a history doctorate. When he began his search for a unique dissertation topic, he decided on local basketball icon Larry Finch after initially considering the Memphis Red Sox, the city's Negro Leagues organization.

His dissertation, "Larry Finch's Memphis," later became his first published work, Memphis Hoops: Race, Basketball, and the City, 1968-1997.

In this podcast episode, part one of our two-part conversation, Keith explains the strength of Negro Leagues baseball in Memphis as published in The Memphis Red Sox. You will enjoy hearing about the team’s owners, the Martin brothers, and the stadium they provided for their team to play in.

Thanks for listening!

Note: Part Two will be published next Monday, February 10…
