Avoiding Babylon
Avoiding Babylon was started during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. During these difficult and dark days, when most of us were isolated from family, friends, our parishes, and even the Sacraments themselves, this channel was started as a statement of standing against the tyrannical mandates that many of us were living under. Since those early days, this channel has morphed into an amazing community of friends…no…more than friends…Christian brothers and sisters…who have grown in joy and charity.
As we see it, our job here at Avoiding Babylon is to remind ourselves and those who enjoy the channel that being Catholic is a joyful and exciting experience. We seek true Catholic fraternity and eutrapelia with other Catholics who, like us, are doing their best to live out their vocation with the help of God’s Grace. Above all, we try to bring humor and joy to the craziness of this fallen world, for as Hillaire Belloc has famously said:
“Wherever the Catholic sun doth shine,
There’s always laughter and good red wine.
At least I’ve always found it so.
Benedicamus Domino!”

Meat Cleaver Road Rage (LOCALS Only Show)
This episode is only available to subscribers.
Avoiding Babylon +
Access to the FULL show on audio!A “road rage” headline is easy to skim past, until it happens on your block, in front of your job, and the footage lands on your phone. We talk through a brutal Queens attack involving a meat cleaver, what our coworkers actually saw, and why the news framing doesn’t always match the reality on the street. The dashcam video leads to the question everyone asks but few can answer honestly: if you’re unarmed and untrained, do you step in, or do you step back?
We get into the bystander effect without pretending it’s simple. There’s shock, confusion, fear of getting hurt, fear of legal consequences, and the very real possibility that you’re walking into a dispute you don’t understand. We also pull something practical out of the horror: what basic first aid readiness looks like, how to think about personal safety, and why de-escalation and road rage avoidance are underrated self-defense skills in New York City and anywhere else people drive angry.
Then we pivot into the broader culture side of the show. We react to a critique of Fulton Sheen that leans into modern “purity tests,” debate Americanism and evangelization style, and question whether nitpicking public figures helps anyone build a healthier faith or a clearer moral compass. We close with a heated reaction to a viral divorce and marriage rant, plus straightforward advice about choosing a spouse, setting expectations, and talking before resentment becomes your whole relationship.

Cold Open And Chat Loyalty
SPEAKER_03Very cold show. Very, very cold. It'd be fitting.
SPEAKER_04Fitting for the Asian on Asian violence I saw today. Well, I didn't actually see it. I wasn't actually there. I was at the other yard. Like the all right, so we have two offices in Queens. So like the what where it happened was right in front of like the main yard where all our equipment is. So like you guys are gonna see the video of all of like the workers at the company, like the foreman go to a different yard where like our office is. Um, but like my my brother Joey's in the video and stuff. But uh before we get to that, um I gotta rip into Ocean a little bit. Like Ocean, when you're in our chat, it's like cool that you break our bowls and stuff. But if I'm on another show, like I don't have access to highlight your comments and like make a joke about it, so it just looks like you are shitting on me, comment after comment, and you just look like a dick. Like it's not funny, nobody's laughing. You're just being a dick to someone who's like been nothing but kind to you. Like, we give you a free locals membership and all that, like you're supposed to like big your brother up when he's on another show. Like, you can't just always, always, always be shitting on me. Like, there's never a positive thing that ever comes out of your freaking mouth, and it gets very tedious and annoying at times. Like, it's cool to like occasionally break my my balls and like make jokes, especially on our show, but like if I'm on another channel, you're not supposed to just shit on me for an hour and a half. Like I'm sitting there looking at it, and I'm just like, what is this kid doing? Like, you're supposed to like be like like I don't like you're one of ours. You don't go onto the onto Tim's chat and go, I thought they had beef together and like blow my spot because I've said things on locals that maybe I probably wouldn't say on YouTube, like just shitty things, man. Like I just don't get that. I know you're young and like you're like I'm just gonna say, like, as a rule, like when when I'm on another show, it's not the same show as avoiding Babylon, like the sarcasm isn't the same, the humor isn't the same. You gotta chill out a little bit, and you're supposed to compliment me over there and like make me look good. Like it, Tim's thinking, like like you like people hate the show because of the comments you're leaving, like you don't say a single positive thing about me. I'm watching like tons of our other listeners were in the chat, and they're all like, yo, Anthony's cooking right now, this is great. Not one positive thing comes from Ocean, and I'm just like, dude, like I thought you were our boy, like you don't have to every single thing throw shade at me. Not cool, man. I know you, I know you're young and like you're you know you're trying to figure this stuff out, but like like there men breaking each other's chops is fine, but like you have to show some love on occasion, like it can't just be non-stop ridicule, eight million comments about my red face. Like, I get it, dude. Cool, like it wasn't even like other people were interacting with it, it was just him shitting on me for an hour and a half, and I'm just like, I thought, like, don't use one of ours. Like, you're supposed to be looking out for me when I'm on another show. Really got under my skin last night, man. If you couldn't tell, yeah, I don't know. Like, I like I I expect loyalty to me from our listeners when I'm on another show. It's like it's one thing we have our thing over here, right? Like, we do our thing here. You guys can shit on me all you want when we're here, but like if I'm on another show, you're not supposed to do that, like you're supposed to look out for me when I'm on another show. You idiots didn't even leave comments on the freaking video.
SPEAKER_03Whatever.
SPEAKER_04I'm cranky.
SPEAKER_03I mean, it's just another they've heard it a million times on this channel.
SPEAKER_04Like, why would they well? Yeah, but Tim's never heard it, and Tim's audience has never heard it. So, like, the show was actually very interesting because when you're talking to somebody new about this stuff, it's like you you remember things from that we haven't talked about in months and stuff. Like it really was a good conversation that I had with Tim because it's it was covering stuff we've covered for the past year basically. But um, like Tim was like, I I think Tim actually really did enjoy the conversation. So, um,
A Violent Attack Near Work
SPEAKER_04but yeah, so I go into work this morning, and um we I get we get a phone call in the in the main office, and and they're like, uh, we just witnessed a murder. And I'm like, wait a minute, what the hell happened? Joe Boca is at the at the yard with the guys, and and he sees it. He texts me, he's like, Holy crap, what's going on? And uh did you ever see you haven't seen Goodfellas, Rob? No, you've never seen Goodfellas, no. Like when I went out to my job this morning, I saw everybody and they're all standing around, everybody's like talking about it, and like, oh my god, talking about what they saw. And I'm like, I'm like, what do you guys have? PTSD? Like, get to work, what are we doing? I don't understand. Like, there's one another billion Chinese are coming over in the next 10 years, guys. They'll be okay. Don't worry about it. But it was pretty actually wild what happened this morning. So the news is reporting it as uh a road rage incident, but from everybody at my yard that I talked to, they're saying this thing seemed like it was like a targeted attack. Like this guy, they didn't. I mean, there could have been a road rage altercation before they got onto our block, but these guys came onto our block and the one guy ran his car in front of the other guy to stop him. They both got out of the car and the one guy just started running. And the guy that was chasing him had a meat cleaver and just immediately started butchering the guy. So we had CCTV footage, which kind of sucked because the whole attack happened behind a bus. But then one of our pickup trucks were parked right in front of the incident, and we have dash cams on every single pickup truck. So I think I think we should start playing the news story, Rob.
SPEAKER_03Are all your dash cams on your trucks as blurry as that one?
SPEAKER_04Maybe the front view. I don't know. I mean, he sends me videos of me like touching my phone every once in a while.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, those are always those are always in 4K, it looks like those things are always perfect.
SPEAKER_04But uh, so well, the thing is it's blurry because I zoomed in on it.
SPEAKER_03No, even the one that wasn't zoomed in was well, no, even that one is zoomed in.
SPEAKER_04Oh, is it like the the full video shows the interior and exterior camera? Oh, okay. So I cropped it to just show the exterior camera, so even that one is zoomed in. Like when I watch it on my iPad, it's actually kind of clear, it's not it's not that blurry. But uh play the news report first just so people can see what the news is reporting.
SPEAKER_03The which news report? There's two of them.
SPEAKER_04I sent the YouTube video.
SPEAKER_03Okay, there we go.
SPEAKER_04Um, and there's probably going to be updated uh videos on this because when my crew got back to the yard this afternoon, the news crews were waiting at the yard, like waiting for us to get back to from from work. And one of my coworkers was like interviewed by like three different news news networks. Like he's gonna be on like ABC tonight and MBC tonight. But yeah, just play it, play the YouTube
News Report Versus Eyewitness Details
SPEAKER_04video. It's a it's a quick thing. No, no volume.
SPEAKER_00Other news this afternoon, police in Queens investigating a brutal attack that they say stem from road rage this morning. They say a man got out of his car and stabbed another man with a meat cleaver several times and then took off. Eyewitness news reporter Shantae Lands is live at that scene in College Point, Queens.
SPEAKER_04Look at that knife. Who carries that in their car?
SPEAKER_01Well, Sandra, that scene just cleared, but what started as an argument quickly escalated between two drivers, one of them being stabbed in his head, chest, and also in the arm. Like you mentioned, that weapon was a meat cleaver, and our cameras captured detectives actually picking it up on video, not too far from the victim's vehicle, which was a minivan. This all happened around 5 35 this morning here in College Point, near 126th Street and 26th Avenue. That call came in uh shortly after this happened. The victim's vehicle, again, was that Toyota?
SPEAKER_03Doctor, quick guy, someone pull it up and see you exactly what camp of the company Anthony works for.
SPEAKER_04126th Street and 26th. That's literally my work address. Right on the corner.
SPEAKER_01Police are describing this as road rage. The man stabbed was rushed to New York Presbyterian Queen's.
SPEAKER_04I I think issue with with them saying stabbed. Yeah, he's you and wait till you see the video. He's not stabbed. This guy is butchered. Like he looked, the guy looks like he's he's a homicidal maniac. Like there, this guy clearly intended to kill this guy.
SPEAKER_03Like it's it now the guy had a meat cleaver in his vehicle because he's obviously um Chinese animal control.
SPEAKER_04I think he no, like in all seriousness, though, I think he I dude, this could have been like a Chinese mob thing. This could have been a gambling thing. Like the Chinese love to gamble.
SPEAKER_03This could have been a meat cleaver.
SPEAKER_04I don't know, man. They like to send the message. I don't know.
SPEAKER_03This guy could have could have I mean I I think putting a dozen holes in someone with the gun sends a message too, honestly. But yeah, but I don't know.
SPEAKER_04I mean, the Chinese are vicious, man. They and guns are hard to get in New York, maybe. I don't know. Like what why would somebody carry a meat cleaver? Not at that address, they aren't, or at least but why is somebody carrying this cleaver in there? All right, play the rest of the report because they talk about his victim uh hospital in stable condition.
SPEAKER_01No arrests have been made, but police say the suspect is described as an Asian man wearing a white shirt and jeans. No word from police on the type of vehicle he was driving.
SPEAKER_03All those flock cameras, and we don't know the type of vehicle he was driving.
SPEAKER_04Well, the thing is, okay, so I'll I mean I'll tell you the whole story. What happened? Like the guy abandoned his vehicle. Like he winds up abandoning his vehicle, and then my brother Joey goes on a ride with the cops this morning for like 25 minutes, trying to search for the guy because my brother was an eyewitness and he knew what the guy looked like. I mean, but in reality, all Chinese people look the same, so I don't know how my brother was gonna point him out.
SPEAKER_03But Joey's like, it was that guy.
SPEAKER_04They're like, wait a minute, that guy's Vietnamese, not even Chinese. And the thing is, like uh uh College Point is all Asian, like all Asian, like flushing flushing queens, where this is, it's all Asian, so it's like they would have blended right in, whoever it was. But they had choppers up in the sky, right like 10 minutes right after the whole incident happened and stuff. He rook like a man, the one with the slanted eyes, he he uh looking like a discs. Oh man. All right, so all right, do you want to play? You want me to keep playing this? Nah, you don't have to play the big video first, and then I sent you a zoomed-in video.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, now just forewarning everyone, like you don't see blood or gore. Yeah, you don't see too much detail, but you do see someone swinging on someone.
SPEAKER_04It's it's I mean, it is vicious.
SPEAKER_03With the victim is expected to survive, right?
SPEAKER_04Which is nuts because my my brother told me the guy had a hack, like uh he must have like hit it on an angle. The the guy the back of the guy's head was like peeled up, like my brother.
SPEAKER_03Everybody there probably hit the back of the skull, right? And slid down and kind of just peeled the skin away.
SPEAKER_04Now, everybody I showed this video to made the same comment. They went, Why is nobody helping? But we'll get into that because I think that's actually the interesting part of this. Like the reaction of all my workers not helping, okay?
SPEAKER_03They're not even thinking to you like, hey Ann, you're gonna ask all your guys why the heck they didn't do anything.
SPEAKER_04So, yeah, but watch.
Dashcam Footage And Bystander Freeze
SPEAKER_04I mean, we'll get into this because this is actually like where the conversation can be. Because even you said you're like, none of these guys did anything, or it's like, let's just think. So the guy walking up to this, this is his pickup truck. This is my friend Billy, and now you see the two guys running right next to the van right there. They're and everybody thinks they're just fighting. Everybody thinks they're just fighting, but he is hacking him with a meat cleaver there. That's my brother Joey that just walked in front of the pickup. I want to yell at these guys. Get out of the way, you're ruining the video. He's stupid, move. So now the guy goes to leave, and that kid in the yellow right there, that's my friend Mike. He sees him going to leave and he runs over to the truck and starts punching the window. He broke the guy's mirror off his car. Like he's smashing on the guy's passenger window right now, and the guy just takes off. They're all trying to stop the guy from leaving.
SPEAKER_03Well, yeah, except this one who jumps up on here in case the vehicle to get the hell out of the way. The vehicle comes at him.
SPEAKER_04So the guy takes off and he just peels off and gets out of there, and he abandons the car a block away. Now, everybody I showed this video to look, they all walk away. Nobody even wants to be involved. So when I said Rob the video, Rob's like, why did nobody do anything? Now they did help the guy after, like, they they did render him first aid and stuff like that after they all slow slowly walk away talking. Eventually, they went to somebody eventually does go over and render aid to the guy they did call 911, but they thought it was just a fist fight at first. They didn't realize the guy was like hacked apart with a meat cleaver, but also like why wouldn't you get involved? Dude, I'm telling you, you see two guys that you have no business with getting in a fight, like I'm not I'm not getting involved.
SPEAKER_03I'm not personal, especially if you see it. I'm kind of just busting your balls in that message this morning. Like, well, one, if I don't have a gun and I see a guy with a knife go hacking on someone else, probably not doing I'm not gonna self-preservation.
SPEAKER_04Like, you don't know these two guys, you don't know how I mean, clearly the guy doing it is mentally unwell, right? I mean, they really are just leaving this guy to wallow and die there. Oh my gosh, these guys are terrible.
SPEAKER_03The longer Ant watches, the more it's like, okay, I actually are awful.
SPEAKER_04They're just standing there watching the guy bleed out, and they're like, Well, sucks to the M.
SPEAKER_03Holy crap. They look like they're on a union break watching the guy.
SPEAKER_04Dude, these guys are terrible. Not one person goes over to put like pressure on a wound. Like, how wow, these guys really are terrible. I mean, and you guys have to have first aid kits on all your equipment, I bet, right? Not one of these guys goes to like actually help this guy and like see if he's okay.
SPEAKER_03Well, is that he's putting cones out, he's putting cones out. Well, that is what you guys are trained to do first, I'm sure. I think one of them wants to get chalked.
SPEAKER_04Holy cow, I didn't watch this full video.
SPEAKER_05I did not watch it.
SPEAKER_04I did not watch this, but look at them. They're just going about their business like nothing happens. Like a guy was just mauled with the city. They're all they're all just calling the cops right now. I think everybody was kind of just like in shock at like what just took place. That might that might be Joe Boca right there.
SPEAKER_03Where which one? The one pulling the connection.
SPEAKER_04So now the guy Billy gets in his pickup and he just leaves. So the video kind of ends. So there is somebody assisting, but they're not like helping helping. Look, the guy is still moving. No, there is no one there assisting. No one's actually assisting, they're just calling the cops. All right, all right, these guys suck. Holy cow, man. Um, you want to do the zoomed in video?
SPEAKER_03The cones, man. The cones killed me. Look, safety. You gotta send that to your uncle and be like, look, look at these guys.
SPEAKER_04First thing they thought was put con and safety out. They want to make sure they don't want to go to safety violation for the murder victim on the floor.
SPEAKER_03Uh when when I was when I did tree work, you know, the the the corporation we worked for would every once in a while send a guy by like clandestinely to see to check off that all that you followed all the safety procedures. And one of the things that no one no one almost ever got right was putting cones out at the right intervals and stuff like that. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_04We are very well trained in putting cones out. But Bobby said, uh, I agree in principle, but it's a serious question. What do you physically do to render aid? Do you have any medical training? And also, they uh they like they said they thought he was every single guy that came out to my job today when I met them, they were like, This guy's dead. Like nobody thought the guy lived. They're like, bro, this guy hacked him with a meat cleaver. His head was like hanging off, like the guy wasn't like moving, you know, and they just thought he was dead. Uh so just so go to the zoomed in video, man. The zoomed in video is pretty wild. Um, which five-inch gas do we put pressure on? I don't bro, this is just kind of kind of crazy, though, right?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it is for sure.
SPEAKER_04Um never a dull moment. Somebody said to me, somebody's asked me today, like, how do you always have good stories? And I'm like, Well, he works in New York City. I work in New York City, like I work in an interesting place, man. There's always some crazy what's crazy is this is like the third murder attempt I've witnessed. That's like in it since I've been working, you know, over the course of 20 years. I watched one guy get shot one time. I've told the story, the guy jumped on the side of my pickup that I tried to kill myself because he was attacking me, and I tried to ram him into the freaking into the pole. Um, I've and then uh what I know I saw.
SPEAKER_03It's like the parable of the Good Samaritan, just without the Good Samaritan, and with traffic cones instead.
SPEAKER_04I can't get off of the cones put cones out. That's Walter.
SPEAKER_03That's one real pot sticker, not gonna lie.
SPEAKER_04That's Walter putting cones out. That's too funny, man. Uh all right, so let's play this one, the zoomed in one. Like you really, you really see this guy going out on holy cow. Dude. How did this guy survive? Like, how did he not hit an artery? That must have been a dull blade.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I mean, well, also chances are being uh looking at the cleaver, it looks like it wasn't indexed very well. So when he would hit something, it would probably turn in his hand a little. Yeah, so it's probably only cutting a little ways, you know.
SPEAKER_04So unless you really get a big artery, like sure, eventually the guy could have bled out, but uh it's just not it's well the the thing is I don't blame any of them for not getting involved, like I really don't. Like I would personally would never if I see a guy attacking somebody with a knife, like I'm not no, I'm sorry. It's different if it's one of your friends, yeah, or if it's somebody you know, like then
When Not Helping Is Rational
SPEAKER_04yes, you get involved.
SPEAKER_03Even you know, even if you're there armed with a firearm and and could safely stop the guy, you know, intervene, you don't know what you're getting in the middle of. Is the guy with the pedophile? The cleaver, yeah, is he is or is he in the middle of trying to defend himself?
SPEAKER_04Now, obviously, if the other guy's on the ground and he's hacking into his head, no, but Rob, what if you now entered into a gang war? Right, exactly. Like you kill somebody, and now all of a sudden they're looking for you. Like you don't you don't get involved. I'm telling you in New York, man, you don't get involved. You step back, you call police, and you let them handle it. Like you just because I showed the video to my wife, I showed it somebody, they're all just like, Why is nobody helping him? And I'm like, You you think about that? You want me to get involved and stop a guy swinging a freaking hatchet at somebody? Like, really? You want me to get involved? Get myself in the middle of that situation. I'm not getting in the middle of that situation.
SPEAKER_03You know, um, one of the big subjects they warn you about, you know, when you start to like, you know, conceal carry is one of the most dangerous situations to put yourself in is in a domestic dispute. You know, you you might see uh a male beating on a woman or even stabbing her or something, and you you shoot that guy thinking you're saving the girl's life. They say even if that's the case and you and she, you know, he really is attacking her, and she, you know, he really was gonna kill her, there's like an 80% chance he like turns on you and blames you for it, and you go to jail for shooting a guy. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it's I don't know, man. It's uh it's a it's a dangerous, it's a dangerous thing to get involved in other people's disputes, man. Like if you're not trained law enforcement, like you don't know what you're getting yourself in the middle of. Like that that really could have been a gambling debt unpaid. That could have been some kind of gang thing. Like the Chinese gangs are no joke, man. They're like the freaking the Japanese gangs. Yeah, like they're like they're no joke, man. You don't want to get in the middle of some crap like that, and then all of a sudden you you attack somebody, and now they're coming for your family and crap. Because those people, they're you know, there's no lacoaster notion of women and children will stay out of that stuff.
SPEAKER_03But the one, I mean, what I think one takeaway that everyone could could could use is be at least better prepared for first aid.
SPEAKER_04Better prepared for first aid and better prepared for self-defense, because that could have been if that is just a road rage incident, that's what I'm telling you, man. When I watch people get crazy in road rage in New York, like I never get road rage. Maybe in my car I might yell something, but like I'll never do that thing where like people speed up in front and then they slam on their butt. I'll never you have no idea who you are messing with. I've seen some crazy stuff of road rage incidents, man, and you just do not know what the hell you're dealing with. And one you know, you think you're just you see it as a car, and you think you're flipping out on a car, but meanwhile, it's some lunatic behind the wheel of that car, and you pissed them off in the wrong way, man. And it's like you entered yourself into some crazy thing that you don't want to get, you know, deal with the consequences of. Um, we have uh I did have that other um that video of that woman ranting today that we could talk about
Changing The Show Schedule
SPEAKER_04too. We're gonna keep it in an hour today. Oh, we also should tell everybody what our what we're planning on doing.
SPEAKER_03Well, we might have rethink what we're planning on doing.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it's not it was just an idea today. Um, first of all like I I don't know how you do guns and rosaries because I streamed with Tim yesterday, and I I'm just exhausted from doing two consecutive days. Like, it's hard to do three days in a row. So, like today, the reason we didn't do YouTube was because it's just a lot of work to like come up with a topic that's sustainable for YouTube where you have to kind of like YouTube's different than over here. It's like uh people people's attention spans are different. Uh like you guys coming here, you just want to hang and BS with us. But YouTube, you have to have like a very polished product that you're putting forward, and you have to have commentary on the thing, and you have to have something to say, and Rob has to make a thumbnail, and we have to make sure the title is consistent with the theme. And I it was just a lot. And I said, Rob, let's just do locals tonight. We'll just hang with everybody a little bit. And Rob's like, that's kind of like a good idea for the future, maybe. It might be maybe we do the Tuesday show where we do YouTube, then locals, and then the Thursday show we just do locals.
SPEAKER_03And the problem is then uh where can well uh is is the sponsorships.
SPEAKER_04That's yeah, that's a problem. Yeah. Um, or maybe we'll do a short YouTube. Maybe we'll just like pick one topic to do on YouTube and we just do that as a lead in to locals, and we do 20 minutes on Thursdays or something, half hour. Yeah, I think that's maybe we'll do we'll do a half-hour show on Thursdays on YouTube, and then we'll come over here and we'll do an hour over here. And then we'll always have the option to go the hour and a half if we want to. Yeah, like we'll we'll keep the two-hour window open, but we'll try to keep it because it's just it's a lot. Like, especially if I do a guest spot on somebody else's show, because Tim's show took a lot out of me last night, man. Like, I got to sleep late and stuff, so I was just I I I tonight was just it would have been too much to do YouTube and then come over here, but I still do want to like hang for everybody. So um Harbor Freight. No, it was funny watching Tim do his ads last night because Tim's got like gold companies as his ads and stuff. It's so boomer-ish, man. Uh but I'm just sitting there, I'm like, man, I love our sponsors. So like I I really do love our sponsors. Like, I look forward to doing a knickknack ad, you know, it's like we try to make them humorous and funny, and it's just it's so so different from other people.
SPEAKER_03And we actually like we we actually like and use our spot our sponsor.
SPEAKER_04Well, every sponsor we've ever had, we've never taken on uh we've never taken on a sponsor we didn't like really, really love. Um, I
Fulton Sheen And Purity Tests
SPEAKER_04saw American Reform did an article on Fulton Sheen today, yeah. And for integrity, and I love American Reform, but I wanted to like we're doing an episode on uh Fulton Sheen next Thursday, and I read through American Reform's article and I was waiting to see some like crazy modernist thing or something, and it's like there's nothing to it, like and like the purity spiral, like the purity test that that some trads have for people at this point. I'm just like, like, are you really like Fulton Sheen? We're going after Fulton Sheen, like he's not like barren, you know what I mean? Like Fulton Sheen was was I don't I don't like is that really where we have to go out? I don't know, man. It's like the purity test that these guys hold now for people. Um I just don't get it. Like, I just I don't I don't understand it. Yeah, Anthony is a knickknack success story. And Anthony uh switched his identity, changed his identity on Twitter, and uh his girl's pregnant. Happy for Anthony. Um, but yeah, like the I I read I was reading the article on the Jarian 2, but I was waiting for the um the article on Fulton Sheen to like have some. I'll I'm actually gonna bring it up. Let's go through it because we're doing an episode on Fulton Sheen next Thursday.
SPEAKER_03And uh Yeah, because some never mind.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's we're doing it as a as a as a favor, but um so alright, so Fulton Sheen's America. You want me to send it to you so you can pull it up? Sure. Uh let me s uh open it for um yeah, we'll go through it because I think this is just uh a purity test that is unreasonable. All right, I just sent it to you.
SPEAKER_03So unreasonableness from from integrity magazine.
SPEAKER_04Well, from American Reform, who I do like.
SPEAKER_03Um I do like him too, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Fulton Sheen, the Americanist, the critical examination of his remarks on church-state relations relations, comparing his views of the Catholic Church in the uh United States to those of Pope Leo the Thirteenth. So in the English language, we use the term sacred cow as an idiom for a belief, custom person, or institution considered to be immune from criticism or even mild questioning. Today, aside from a few notable exceptions, there is no better example of this phenomenon than Fulton Sheen, a prelate beloved for his charismatic delivery, breadth of knowledge, and embodiment of American exceptionalism. Sheen has become especially untouchable in light of the beatification attempts coming up. All right, we'll go. All right, so for starters, he was among the most enthusiastic promoters of the Second Vatican Council and his revolutionary reforms. That's true. Notable among his exploits after the council include, but are not limited to actively participating in a Jewish Sabbath service. That's not great. But I think that was kind of like just in the air after the World War II and the council. Like it was just kind of in the air, and I think so many people were susceptible to that. I'm not endorsing it in any way, and I do think it's worth criticizing, but uh praising the notorious neo-modernist Taylor Deschardin, founding ecumenical seminaries, denouncing the SSPX as schismatic, and not to be overlooked, frequently reducing his message to meet the demands of non-dogmatic pre-Christian philosophy. So that's what like the pre-paragraph. So now I'm waiting for like the substance of it in the next part, but he doesn't like really get to anything. Um uh scroll down to imbibing the American spirit because there's not really anything.
SPEAKER_03Exposed the cult of Fulton Sheen, yeah. The Saints, I mean, there's Saints are supposed to have cults, yes, exactly.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah. All right, Kirk Hansen has also exposed the cult of Fulton Sheen in a recent integrity essay. He detailed among other other troubling facts about his ecclesiastical career, including an appearance on Robert Schuler's uh Hour of Power at the Crystal Cathedral, when Sheen told a room full of Protestants they that they were spiritually inside of inside the Church of Christ. I I would need to like see that, see the consequences.
SPEAKER_03I guess as they say, we're seeing a lot of claims, but nothing behind them.
SPEAKER_04Sheen's efforts did not come without worldly honors, uh, which I don't think is necessarily a problem. In 53, he won an Emmy Award for most outstanding television personality and affectionately related to reporter Bob uh Consodine that at least one Jewish admirer referred to him as Rabbi Sheen. I'm not a fan of the Jewish stuff, you guys know that. Uh Sheen's heterodox tendencies were most visible in his method of evangelization, a method similar to what Pope Leo the Thirteenth authoritatively denounced at the turn of the 20th century before examining what Sheen called his new method, some background on this topic. So uh Leo the 13th condemning a vague and elusive body of doctrines known as Americanism, uh described both then and now as a species of American exceptionalism in religious, moral, and political matters, typified by those who, in Leo's words, conceive and would have the church in America to be different from what is in the rest of the world.
SPEAKER_03I don't see how that has anything to do with his method of evangelists.
SPEAKER_04Right, and also what Fulton Sheen says. So while originally addressing James Gibbons, an American uh American uh par excellence, uh notion uh benevolent, all right. We got you gotta go past this. All right, the underlying principle of those new opinions is that in order to more easily attract those who differ from her, the church should shape her teaching more in accord with the spirit of the age. So, like, that's what he's criticizing. Like, because I don't want to I want to get to what he actually claims Sheen said. Um all right, so this is what he claims Sheen said on television. I was no longer talking in the name of the church under the sponsorship of its bishops, Sheen said. This new method had to be ecumenical and directed to all people of goodwill. It was no longer a direct presentation of Christian doctrine, but rather a reasoned approach to it with something common to the audience. Now, I personally, when I am talking to atheists, do not go in and teach Catholic doctrine. Like, like you're you have to think of how Sheen is on a public network, like he's on a cable news network, right? He his show was on like NBC or something, right?
SPEAKER_03Something like that, one of the one of the big channels.
SPEAKER_04There's only a couple of television networks back then, and he's not just talking to Catholics. So instead of explicitly teaching Catholic doctrine, he's approaching it from like philosophy and things like that. Like when I speak to the atheists I'm at work with, I'm talking about like the problem the evil, I'm talking about like uh, you know, as as we see like Aquinas of Five Ways, you know, yeah, things like that. Like I'm not going explicitly into Catholic doctrine, so I don't actually see a problem with that, right?
SPEAKER_03I mean, unless they can point to specific things Sheen said on television that contradicts that contradicts Catholic doctrine, right?
SPEAKER_04Which he doesn't. So bear in mind that Sheen was serving as the U.S. director of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith at this time, thereby only adding to the scandal. I guess it isn't a scandal. It should be no surprise then to learn that Sheen told Protestants in 58 that though they are separated from the rock upon which the church was built, they are not separated from him, Christ, who laid that rock. Now, this is after the Second Vatican Council, and we just get the document where it talks about the church subsisting in the Catholic Church.
SPEAKER_03No, no, no, no.
SPEAKER_04Okay, yeah, yeah, that's true. Um okay, that is a problem, I guess. Uh, one cannot help but wonder which spirit America's or Christ Bishop Sheen was more afraid of offending. I still think, like, I need to see the context of how he's saying these things. Uh, in 1952, article for St. Louis Review entitled Bishop Sheen says no church, state union wanted in this nation, Sheen lamented that there was a lie abroad that accused the Catholic Church in the U.S. of perverting the nation, raiding the treasury, and wanting the state to be subservient to the church. Bishop Sheen responded to these charges in a lengthened sermon by stating that's not true. But that's not true.
SPEAKER_03I mean, look at the next sentence.
SPEAKER_04While Sheen was correct to say to say that what he should have done. Like, you can't do that. My wife does that. My wife, this is female reasoning.
SPEAKER_03You can look at the greatest saints of the church and point out in specific scenario scenarios that they should have done more.
SPEAKER_04You're saying basically what you're saying is what I would have done is like the I'm sorry, or what I would have done with perfect knowledge of what exactly was going to happen. Yeah, and I'm like, this is it a 1952 article. This is before the count, this is pre-conciliar Sheen. Come on, saying that there's there is no plan to raid the treasury or wanting the state to be subservient to the church. Like, there is not, that's not true. Like, so while Sheen is correct to say that, what he should have done was to next was to affirm that the state has a duty and principle. Like, you can't do that. Like, we don't you can't really do that. Um, but owing to contingent circumstances in the United States, namely religious pluralism, it was neither practical nor expedient to effect this ideal arrangement. Consequently, prudent, like you I'm sorry, American Reform.
SPEAKER_03Like, you don't get to I mean, we we could we could look at what he said on our channel and point out things maybe he should have said you could have said this better.
SPEAKER_04Or even you can't really do this. Uh this is a this is the famous thesis hypothesis distinction regarding the church. Like you yeah, I'm sorry, I'm not going for this one. Uh instead of doing that, however, sheem exclaimed, We are not in favor of an established church in the United States, we do not want an established church in the church, established church in the United States, we do not want an established church and have never wanted it. We are loyal to the United States, and we propose we remain loyal to it.
SPEAKER_03No, see that that is an issue.
SPEAKER_04I mean, that that's you don't need to go into what he should have said, you could have just led right into this, like but but even that, like I like the church was not in favor of like the church, but the church should have been, it should have been, but the church was not, like Sheen is not stating a lie there. He's not saying stating a fact, he's merely stating a fact. Like, I don't know. Like the church is not looking to make America subservient to the church, like they just weren't. Um at best, Sheen only stated the hypothesis and stated it so forcefully that it sounded as as it was the ideal rather than the actual thesis.
SPEAKER_03Like, this is what I think.
SPEAKER_04Um, now an objector may retort by noting that a single sermon that can be interpreted in an orthodox manner is not something to take issue with. Fair enough. But Sheen made other remarks indicating that he tended towards obscure. But the like this whole thing, this is what I mean. Like look, well, he made remarks obscuring and saying he tended towards yeah, like he might he might have had, I mean, look, he's an American archbishop. Like, I don't I don't know, man. It's uh it's just seemed very nitpicky to me.
SPEAKER_03Plus, I mean, like you said, this is 1952, this is 70 years after after Leo's Immortale Day, like by this time, Immortale Day had failed. Yeah, it had failed entirely, not because it was wrong or bad.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I just think like American reform is like going through a lot of critique of the US right now, and and look, we see all these problems too, but I look, like I said, I just don't know why we're waging war against against Fulton Sheen. Like he wasn't, he was I don't know, man. Like it's just the it seems like a silly war to wage. That's all. Like, I I don't know. I I I've read um what was it, the The Life of Uh Christ by Fulton Sheen, I think. Um, I've given that book to people, it's an amazing book. Um I think he was a powerful witness to Christ and his church. Uh I think he should be beatified. Or canonized at this point, right? He's already beatified.
SPEAKER_03No, he's going to be beatified.
SPEAKER_04Okay. Um yeah, I don't know. I don't take issue with Sheen. I'm sorry. I don't know. I can't, I can't, I can't jump on board with some of these trads sometimes, man. Like they just it's like they have this purity test that is like, um, I don't know. I mean, I I guess he's playing devil's advocate here, and there's no devil's advocate in the church. Like, I don't know. You think the devil's advocate would find these things as just cause to not canonize? Maybe, maybe before the council, maybe. Uh I don't know. But like, compared to some of the other, like, compared to freaking, what's his name? Your favorite scene? Carlo Acudis? Carlo Acutas, like, we're gonna complain about Fulton Sheen being canonized, and we're getting Carlo Acudis. Come on, guys, chill.
SPEAKER_03Was Sheen's favorite movie, Euro Trip?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I'm sorry. I'm not I'm not going for this one. Love you guys, but we're gonna have to agree to disagree on this one.
Divorced Mom Rant And Marriage Realities
SPEAKER_04Um, all right, you want to play this insane woman? Let's play this clip of this insane woman. That last uh trad wife clip did really well. Yeah, it did. It did like 20k, right? Something like that.
SPEAKER_03No, it's um it's like 30k.
SPEAKER_04Is it? And that like with no advertising or anything like that, just naturally did 30k.
SPEAKER_03No, you told me to put hands on it.
SPEAKER_04Oh, you put hands behind it? Oh, I didn't know you did behind it.
SPEAKER_05Oh, here we go.
SPEAKER_02Sometimes there's two options. It's either be a married single mom or a single mom. And I bet you that while you're a single mom, you'll have a lot less on your plates. Okay, when you are a married single mom and the entire household is on you, right?
SPEAKER_03Hold on, hold on. Is she a midget? She looks like a midget. I have no idea, but I don't think she looks like she's got the proportions of a midget. Yeah, she might, but I don't I don't think she is.
SPEAKER_02You never get to clock out. Dad's over there, like, oh I mark. Oh, you poor thing. Did you get to go and get your hair cut on your lunch break? Did you get to eat your lunch by yourself? Did you get to go to the bathroom without anybody playing with your toes? Oh, you poor thing, you had to go to work with me. Would you be worried?
SPEAKER_04Oh, you poor thing, you had to be around your children. Oh, you poor thing, you had to be around your children.
SPEAKER_03I I have to be around children, adult children that are not mine all day.
SPEAKER_04Like the absolute audacity of this woman. Oh, you poor thing, you went to work, you provided for our family, you poor thing. You sat home with your children. Like you're complaining that a cute, adorable little three-year-old wants to paint your toes while you pee. Oh my, oh, oh my, how do you survive? The things women complain about. Like, it's just insane. Keep going.
SPEAKER_02Would you be working if you didn't have a family? Would you be working if you like what the I'm so sick of hearing that, okay? Because that man would have the same mouth to feed, the same things to do at home that you're doing all the time, the same bills to pay if you weren't there.
SPEAKER_04So yeah, he would not, he would have a job and he would have a ton more money to not have to spend on the ridiculous crap women want men to spend their money on. Like the insane statements she's making. Oh, you'd still have to go to work. Yes, we would go to work, but we would come home. And not have a complaining idiot annoying us when we get home. Telling us we have to go on, we have to go to this thing, and we have to go to this thing, and we have to go to this thing, and we have to go spend money on this, and we have to get that. Well, this we have to get this for the house, and we have to get this for that. And I'm I'm not, I'm just saying, like, this is what this woman clearly was like when he got home, this poor guy. Yeah. I'm not saying all women are like, I'm saying this woman was clearly like that. Like, like this is what this poor guy is.
SPEAKER_03Is she a single mom because her husband offed himself because he couldn't stand it?
SPEAKER_04Well, she's a single mom now, she's divorced, and she's trying to justify how much her life's totally better now without her husband. Because she divorced her husband because of this. Let's keep going.
SPEAKER_02Maybe a little bit more, okay, a little bit more financial burden of like having a family because that's what that's what he signed up for.
SPEAKER_04And you know what you what the hell did you sign up for? Yeah, what did you sign up for? You sign up literally giving your body. Look at look at she she views she views intimacy with her husband as signing up, literally giving your body. Oh my gosh. What did he oh okay?
SPEAKER_02Sign up for literally giving your body, like your health, your life, your mental load. The happiest people are divorced women and married men. The people that live the longest, married men and single women.
SPEAKER_03And hey Anthony, who's got a whose body is more shot between you and your wife?
SPEAKER_04I bet it's yours. By far mine. By far. Like the like just just even working the the job I work. Like it's yeah, the amount of strain I put on my body. So it's I'm just I I swear I watch videos like this, and I am just like the reason I actually do enjoy watching videos like this is because it makes me so grateful for my wife. Like, I really like when I watch videos like this, I I I'll finish a video like this and I will call my wife and tell her how much I love her and how grateful I am that she is not like this because there are so many women like this. Like, you all need to be so careful in how you choose your spouse because you can get you can get caught up thinking, oh, this girl's pretty and this and that, and then you get married and she's just a miserable one. No, we're finishing that video. But you dare take that down. We are finishing this video.
SPEAKER_03I was really trying to slide.
SPEAKER_04No, no, no, no, no. We are finishing this video.
SPEAKER_02There is a reason for that. So just know, like when you are like your mental load is so strong, you feel invisible in your own house. You feel like you are doing fucking everything that they can go to work, clock in, clock out, and when they come home, they're done. That is such bullshit. And let me tell you that when you become a single mom, it is so much easier. And I used to think to myself all the time, I used to think to myself all the time. When I would like beg for help whenever I had the baby, I had the baby, I'm a two-year-old, and like it'd be like about like work or whatever.
SPEAKER_04She's complaining about two kids when I would ask for help because I just couldn't handle it. You're two kids. This is this is too much for you. You're two kids, you have a baby, and you your husband walks in the door, he just put in a 10 or 12-hour work day, and he sat on the couch for five minutes, and you just I've I've done so much. You sat on the phone with your friends all day. You sat on the phone with your friends all day. You're you don't hate your husband, you hate your children because that's actually the case. Like, I remember being home with the three kids, and my three kids, I you could literally sit kids in front of a TV. You sit them in front of a TV if you if you really have to do some stuff, and the TV is fine. You put a cartoon on, you want to let them watch blues clues, and the freaking you could go do whatever you want while the kids are watching blues clues.
SPEAKER_03I don't know what the hell the kids are watching these days, but plus, I mean, like, are we like we know we know this woman didn't homeschool her kids, so so I'm sure they got sent off to school. She probably had a no pair, like oh well, and like, yeah, of course, now being a single mom's easy for her. She sends the school the kids off to be raised by someone else while she goes does does a fake fake woman job, you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_04Like, and he's literally still paying for her lifestyle, yeah. Like she gets all the benefits of marriage without having to have sex with her husband, is what she's saying. Okay, she literally had to give her body literally my whole mental capacity, my mental load.
SPEAKER_03Trust me, there's not much there.
SPEAKER_04None, freaking airhead. Finish it out.
SPEAKER_02I want to see oh, whatever. I'm like begging for help because it's 11 o'clock and I still haven't showered or whatever. And in my line, I kept it.
SPEAKER_04I'm having you showered by 11 p.m., you lazy, lazy woman. You're gonna tell me you don't put the two-year-old and the baby down for a nap at any point to jump in the shower. You have no time to yourself with two kids. These they're insane, absolutely insane. My mother, I remember that at one point she had five kids under the age of seven in the house, and she never bitched to my dad. She never did, like she really never, like my dad, my dad would come home from work, my mom would have dinner on the table, and my dad would be able to like de-stress from the day he had. And she was support, and like, I mean, he would take the young, he would take the toddlers and he would have like, you know, because as after like after he decompressed and he took a shower and he had dinner, then he would play with the kids and take them off my mom's hands, and my mom would get the the kitchen cleaned, and the older kids would help, you know, whatever. But like this woman complaining about two children. She left her husband for voice of reason. Yeah, entitlement. Like, just I don't I don't know what I don't know what modern women are looking for, man. I think they see Instagram videos of other women who have au pairs and they think that their life is just supposed to just be everyone catering to them and everything's supposed to be easy. It's like life is hard, it's difficult. Marriage is hard, it's difficult.
SPEAKER_03I'm telling you, once we get rid of the 19th Amendment, what we immediately have to do after that is make it illegal for women to have social media.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it would change so much. It would change so much. But uh it uh it is it is uh hard uh to just live a normal life, like it is, it's tedious. You have a lot of days that are like Groundhog's Day, and you do get tired of the mundane every day is the same thing. Both men and women deal with this. Men suffer it a little bit better and they don't complain as much, but it happens just as much for men as it does for women. And the and these two clearly just stopped being attentive to their relationship. That's what I mean. Look, I'm not even you have no idea what the husband was like. He could have been coming home and not paying his wife any attention. I highly doubt the husband came home and didn't help her with the kids, though. Like, dads are just in tune to their kids when they come home, they want to see their kids when they come home. I don't believe this woman, like at all. I don't believe her. And at 11 o'clock at night, you still need help with the kids because you haven't shout. Like, why are the kids up at 11 o'clock at night? Why are they not in bed? I like I don't modern modern women, man. Gents, choose wisely. Choose wisely. Ladies, you too, if there's any ladies in here, choose wisely. Like you do you do have a choice in the type of spouse you marry. Make sure that you guys discuss these things before you tie the knot. Make sure you guys settle things beforehand, talk them out. If you're feeling neglected, make sure you have conversations with each other. If she's feeling neglected, make sure you guys have conversations with each other. See what you guys need from one another because you don't want this resentment being built up, and then all of a sudden it explodes, or one of you goes and looks somewhere outside of the marriage. Like this crap happens all the freaking
Choose Wisely And Communicate Early
SPEAKER_04time.
SPEAKER_03Uh Jim, he does have uh, yeah, he's got a single sister that has eight and a half fingers.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, nah, no, no single sisters, but uh Wagner O'Pair.
SPEAKER_03Does Wagner have an OPER? He probably does. No, no, he uh has a thumbnail of one of an au pair? I'm I don't know, I'm guessing.
SPEAKER_04People that have an au pair, like that's insane to me. Like you let some young Irish girl come abroad over here and live in your house.
SPEAKER_03What you need is a mean old Irish hag as a maid.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, something like that. I could see. Like these people look at like a 22-year-old au pair living in the house. Like, why would you ever, ever do that to yourself? I don't know. People are nuts. Um, yeah, I don't think I saved much else. I figured we would do an hour tonight because I am exhausted. If you guys are avoiding Babylon content, you guys can go check out my my uh show with Tim from last night because that was pretty good. Uh it's probably stuff you guys have all heard me say before, but it was fun to say it to a new audience. Um and uh yeah, we got we got it. I we I we did kind of cover some stuff like that I don't think I've ever worked out on air, or maybe it was like sporadic in different episodes and kind of all came together, so it was a good conversation. But we're gonna call this one uh a night. And uh we gave you guys the hour. We weren't really up to it tonight, but we didn't want to cancel on you guys because you guys keep the lights on for us. So we will be back on Tuesday. Are we doing RAM? The the conclusion of our we're gonna go through.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, let's actually let's actually go through the uh encyclical.
SPEAKER_04So we're gonna do Rarum on Tuesday, and then Thursday we have Fulton Sheen. We actually have our shows planned for next week. I don't have to think. I can't wait to get home from work tomorrow and not have to look at my phone. Like the past three days of just like looking for stuff to talk about, trying to figure out what we're gonna do. Like, I I it gets to be too much sometimes.
SPEAKER_03I don't I remember the last time I had a free weekend.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, you've been at it every weekend.
SPEAKER_03So I'm gonna get home, throw my phone here on the desk, take the kids out on the four-wheeler.
SPEAKER_04You don't have to travel anywhere, right? No, yeah. I have some stuff I gotta do in my backyard, but I enjoy that.
SPEAKER_03Like, I enjoyed I was gonna say I have some chores I need to do Saturday, but I like tinkering in the yard.
SPEAKER_04Like, I've uh we we have my daughter's party coming up in two weeks. My daughter's sweet 16, we're doing it in my backyard. And when I have a when I have a party coming up, it forces me to like do things in my yard, and like I'm always happy I did it. You know, it's like if I didn't have that party coming up, I wouldn't have like tightened certain things up and made sure I got everything in order. And then as soon as I'm done, like I love just sitting back and looking at like what I accomplished and enjoying like the labors of my of my work and and just sitting and enjoying it. So I'm looking forward to it this week. I could I could use a day in the yard just doing some stuff. Then next weekend I have my daughter's party, and then after that, I don't have plans for August. I will be on the boat every single weekend. I'm not committing myself to anything. Oh, I have Bobby's bachelor party in September. Uh in September,
Next Shows Weekend Plans Wrap
SPEAKER_04not August. August, I'm free. Um nobody did he tell you I can't go to that to the bachelor party? No, but he told me now. So have a cousin's wedding day days. Even even still like a fly into New York just for a uh a night is tough, so yeah.
SPEAKER_03But um, is the boat back?
SPEAKER_04No, it's still the guy is uh like there's nothing worse than boat mechanics, like the guy had not the most reliable uh demographic out there. They just have you in a position, like you can't get a new boat mechanic. Like they new in the summer, you cannot get a new boat mechanic. Like they are still everyone's so booked, yeah. They're so booked up, so you're stuck with your mechanic. I have another mechanic who really does do whatever I need, but he can't take the lower unit off because he can't do it in my drive. Like the guy comes to my house and does stuff, but he you need to be you need a shop to take the lower unit off. So um I'm just kind of stuck waiting on him to be able to squeeze my boat in, and it's is what it is. But I have stuff to do the next two week two weekends anyway, so I'm not that like uptight about it. It'll definitely be fixed before then. So, but all right, guys, we're gonna call this one a wrap. We'll see you guys on Tuesday.
