How DoorDash's Portable Benefits Could Affect Gig Workers | Skipcart & Flex News | Ep 5

The Gig Economy Podcast

We would love to hear your feedback!

We explore various gig work options to combat the summer slowdown, focusing on Skip Cart, Amazon Flex, DoorDash shopping, and the emergence of portable benefits legislation across multiple states.

• Skip Cart is a last-mile delivery service handling food, groceries, retail, pharmaceuticals, and electronics
• Skip Cart integrates with Shopify and frequently features 7-Eleven deliveries in many markets
• Amazon Flex can pay $28/hour with 4.5-hour blocks, often completed in 3 hours
• Using the FlexAlert app helps secure Amazon Flex blocks through auto-refreshing
• Organizing packages effectively in your vehicle is crucial for efficient Amazon Flex deliveries
• DoorDash shopping doesn't require Platinum status, but has separate Pro Shopper metrics
• Meeting Pro Shopper targets (92%+ original items found, 99%+ total items found) can earn 30% higher pay
• Shopping orders provide more control over your time compared to restaurant pickups
• Portable benefits legislation is spreading, with Utah, Alabama, and Tennessee already implementing laws
• Several states, including Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Georgia, are running pilot programs
• Benefits models vary between cash stipends (like Prop 22) or structured benefits that follow workers across platforms

Speaker 1:

hello, hello, welcome to the shift hustle show. My name is jason, as you know. Thank you guys. So much for uh joining me tonight. A couple things. We're going to talk about. This episode five, by the way. Uh, we're going to talk about.

Speaker 1:

This is episode five, by the way. We're going to talk about Skip Cart. That's the app I want to highlight tonight to talk about. I haven't done it yet. I did sign up but I want to kind of Gabe did one. Actually, you know, gabe, he co-hosts with us at least once a month, sometimes fills in for me Actually, I think he's filling in for me on the 6th Think about it Now that I think about it. But anyways, he did one just for the show, which I really appreciate him doing that because I'm not live with it here yet. And we're going to talk about DoorDash and their shopping requirements. Just dig into that a little bit. I did some Amazon Flex. We're going to talk about portable benefits a little bit deeper. I kind of looked into that a little bit. I think I touched on that like a couple of weeks ago and then why DoorDash is pushing those portable benefits. So, all right, let's get right into it.

Speaker 1:

Got a comment here, bubba Sue. I've been on the waiting list for like six months. I don't know what I think I ended up like because I wanted to highlight a um, an app you know per week, just kind of like something new. And I saw Skip Cart and I had I think I definitely had heard of it. So I was like oh shit, it is live in Grand Rapids, but I think I think I am technically still on the waiting list. So six months is a long time if they're, if they're in your area I mean, they're gabe's like uh, I don't know, maybe like two hours for me, so it's not like you know, it's in a different state or anything but um. So skip cart basically is an on-demand delivery service. I dug it into a little bit more. I thought it was more food, but they're basically the last mile delivery service. So they do food. They do excuse me, I'm drinking a beer again. You know how that happens. They do grocery, they retail pharmaceuticals, food beverage obviously says electronics. I thought that what was kind of interesting is that skip skip cart Express is offered within Shopify, so apparently they have an is it called an API where you're able to put that in your website and you can get stuff delivered right, do that. So that's pretty cool.

Speaker 1:

I'm going into the pictures here. 7-eleven delivers yeah, so funny, you bring that up. Gabe's first delivery was 7-eleven. So I don't know a ton about this stuff. I'm just gonna kind of show you just so you kind of get what it looks like. It's relatively um, no, gabe wanted me to get rid of this guy's address, but like anyone cares, you know, just like any app looks like this the order you got a detail button, arrival time, mileage. You know just basic stuff proof of delivery, retake the photo. It looks relatively easy. Um, it's kind of the same picture. Gabe said it was very smooth.

Speaker 1:

There is a breakdown of the pay. It wasn't a great paying one, I'll be honest. He's like I'm just doing this for the show. I'm like, yeah, I get it, I appreciate it.

Speaker 1:

Uh, interesting, I know walmart spark does this and I don't know if doordash does. But like, how does this delivery go? Do you guys ever fill that out, the five stars, and comment and stuff like that? I typically only do it when it's bad. Um, but, and then the last thing on the skip cart they kind of have a rewards program, so each order that you do, you get paid a certain amount of points. Um, so I don't know if you know it's just a fancy way of like giving, getting a bonus. You know what I mean. But yeah, I guess it has like points you earn.

Speaker 1:

And there was another picture that I think that like I can't remember, maybe I cut that one out, but, um, yeah, what do you guys think of skip car? Right, like I wish I could give. Uh, only if it's bad. Yeah, the reviews. Yeah, I think Walmart Spark asks does it ask about the delivery or does it ask about the customer? Yeah, I don't know, I can't remember. But yeah, I only fill them out when it's bad. It's like, especially when I'm really trying to get orders and I want to be like let's go, I typically just skip past it, I don't fill it out. So let me know about skip cart if it's good in your market. Uh, like babas, who said a lot of 7-eleven deliveries. Uh, who owns speedway too. So speedway, 7-eleven deliveries. Um, again, if the price is right, I'm gonna take it.

Speaker 1:

I don't think it's anything crazier than any other app out there. They they say they cover 37 states. Clicked on, let's see the driver, just to kind of see if there was anything. Yeah, nothing really out of this world as far as different from any other app. So they do catering too. But it's always good to just add another app into your repertoire just so that you, you know, who knows, it might be great in your market. You just never know. Usually, when stuff joins as you know, most gig workers know that multi-app usually when the app comes to your area it's pretty good man, has it been slow? Then that kind of leads into my Amazon Flex.

Speaker 1:

I started back with amazon flex. So earlier last week I went out with, or I went out, you know, trying to make some money, and it is just painfully slow. I mean painfully slow. The, the spark is slow. I mean I got door dash on. I got grubhub, not grubhub I. I think my account's not, it didn't get deactivated, I just stopped using it, I think they just turned it off. But so I got uh, spark, doordash, uber, eats. I even turned instacart on, you know, and I'm just like you know what? Maybe I need to go to flex, and so, as you know, I use flex alert, which auto refreshes your phone.

Speaker 1:

I don't know how you do flex without this. I'll be honest with you. The link is in the description for that, for gary's apps. But so it auto refreshes your phone and, and I'll be honest with you, it is technically not a bot, because it hits your has to hit your phone first, but it does have a little bit of a grabber on there and I it doesn't win all the time. So it's, I think, the difference between gary's apps and a bot. A bot, you have to log. They log into your account through a server. That's not like it's. It's not on your phone. You don't get that from your phone. So I don't know how it's able. I think it's on their server so they see it first and then they can grab it. I don't know, but Gary's apps don't do that. It has to ping your phone, it has to come up on your phone and then it basically tries to grab it for you. So I lose a lot of them even with that.

Speaker 1:

So, that being said, I decided to get on there and one of the parameters on that is 25. Well, you can set it how you want. I mean, just like gary's other apps, you can set your parameters, and I wanted 25 an hour and I got one really quick and I was like oh shit, so um, and it was the caledonia warehouse, which is same day and I've never done a same day and uh, so that was interesting. I went there. Now, they don't have stickers on there, you have to organize it yourself. So the first I went there Now they don't have stickers on there, you have to organize it yourself. So the first day I went there I ended up looking at the address on each one and then writing a number on there. But God dang, that took so long. I bet it took a half hour for me to do that.

Speaker 1:

So I talked to one of my friends her name is Jamie and she says she does it this way and tell me what your thoughts on this. So she goes by the address, so she just grabs the box and when you have, you know, a bigger back, you can kind of do. I guess if you couldn't fold your seats down, it'd be a little bit tougher. But she goes. Everything starts with. It goes one, two, three, then the middle, four, five, six, and then the back seven, eight, nine. So if it starts at a one, it goes here, two, three, so on and so forth. So I did it that way and it was easy to load.

Speaker 1:

But the problem is I had a lot of big boxes and when I needed a two it was in the middle and it was blocked by all these ones. So what do you have to do? You have to pull that out. So that's a little bit of a disadvantage as far as, like have to do you have to pull that out. So that's a little bit of a disadvantage as far as like finding the box while you're working because you know you can't see it. Now, if you organize them, you got one, you know you got one, two, three right in front, like doesn't matter what size the box is, you've wrote them on there, you've wrote the numbers on there, and then you're you know it's right there, so I can see both.

Speaker 1:

If I had a lot of small stuff I think it would be fine because I could reach over the ones and kind of look for the twos. But I mean, I have a rear view mirror that has like a camera with it, so like if your back end is blocked, I had to turn that on. The boxes were so tall I couldn't see out the back and so that was kind of difficult. But I can see it for a smaller boxes, and I really liked the envelope system. I did the same thing. I just sat them on the floor and started one through nine, and then I knew that it was right, right where it was, without having to, you know, write a number on there. So let me know what you think about that, what, what would be, what would work for you, what would be better? If you have a better idea, I would love to hear it.

Speaker 1:

So yeah, I've done three routes and they've all been paid pretty good, I think. My last one I did was $28 an hour and they're four and a half hours, but they don't take four and a half, they take in like three. So you're really making, like you know, whatever. I'm not gonna do the math, you know we don't do math on here, but you're really making a lot more. So I don't sleep on amazon flex. I get. I, I understand I do have that app and that definitely does help me and I recommend getting it. The actually the app is free. Uh, flex alert. If you want to remove the ads, it's $20. And then, if you want it to help you grab a block for you, it's a dollar a time. So you buy tokens or whatever.

Speaker 1:

But yeah, I don't know, I think Flex might be my new thing for a while, until the other stuff picks up. School starts next month, 18th of August, I'll be back, so I won't be doing as much gig work except on the weekends. But yeah, traveler loves Flex. I love Flex too, man. I mean, it's very autonomous and you really don't talk to a lot of people and you just kind of do your own thing. And yeah, it's almost even better than food delivery for me, because food delivery there's waiting and that's annoying. You know what I mean. But you kind of like, just kind of do your thing when you're doing flex and you're just tearing it up through the street not literally tearing it up, but just doing your thing.

Speaker 1:

And, thankfully, what was the first one I got? Oh, I had well, this doesn't matter for you out-of-staters, but I had Lull. And then I did Rock for two days in a row. But I had to look back. I was talking to my friend Jamie. I hadn't done a flex route this whole year. I went back. The last time I got paid was December 2. So it had been a long bit. So I'm kind of mad. I slept on it a little bit because last week was slow, but I mean it has been slow as the summer has gone on, so check out Gary's apps and Amazon Flex. Don't sleep on that, okay. So DoorDash shopping I think there's a misconception out there about DoorDash shopping and if you need to be okay, so forgive me on the terms of a platinum dasher, is it platinum now?

Speaker 1:

Is it fucking? Yeah, get the job done, move on. Yeah, exactly, you don't have to fuck with anything, which is nice as long as the app works good. You don't have to deal with customer service. So there's no top dasher anymore. It's like platinum dasher.

Speaker 1:

But I think what a lot of people are getting uh, confused with door dash and shopping is you do not need to be a bubble suit platinum. You do not need to be a platinum driver to do shops. Now, can you be a better shopper and get more shops? Well, of course you can, and here we go. This is this is mine, okay. So get paid more as a pro shopper. So they have their own statistics inside of the app under ratings and rewards. This, these numbers are low for me and I'm shocked by this.

Speaker 1:

But original item found. So you have, okay. So here are the things that you need to be at, and I don't know the exact. I mean, I looked at them a little bit before I started the show, but you have to have a certain amount of lifetime shopping orders. I have 75, um, but I don't know what the limit or what the. What was the threshold? Uh, items that were wrong or missing I'm good there. Items of quality issue good there. Substance issues good there.

Speaker 1:

Total items found 93. They want you above 99. What's kind of bullshit about this, though, is that doesn't affect you like it. Just because I can't find it doesn't mean it's not there, or so no, no, that that a problem. Uh, reverse that. If it's not there, like I can't do anything about it. And then, original items found try to stay above 92. I'm at 83% Um, so I mean, I, I don't know.

Speaker 1:

I kind of think that's pretty strict for uh, for you know to to be that pro dasher, I guess, because some of that is out of your control. But this is awesome because, let me show you Gabe's His is better than mine, but he's not even. Let's see this one. Why is it not doing it? There we go. He's at five out of six. So his total item found they want to be 99. He's at 98. So I don't know. I think a lot of it depends on the stores you're shopping at. I think there's probably certain stores you want to not shop at. Right, I bet you Dollar General is shitty at having everything in stock. So, yeah, gabe's doing good. I mean we're all the. He's got 470 time, 479 lifetime, but we're all the same, except he's got 93 percent on original item found on 83.

Speaker 1:

But like I said, I don't know, I don't think I can really control that. Yeah, I know I. I. Yeah, it definitely does say that you do get paid more. Um, what did it say? Offers paying up to 30 more? Yeah, I don't, and it doesn't. You can cherry pick those too. You just got to make sure they're good. And I think honestly, I think you would kind of shoot yourself if you did big orders like big shops, because I think you had more opportunity to miss items and sub and stuff like that. But I'm trying to think a couple I definitely wouldn't want to do Dollar General, meijer seems to be great.

Speaker 1:

I do most of mine at Meijer, I can't. And maybe Family Fair I think that's a regional chain. For us it's like a Kroger. Well, I don't know if it's like a Kroger. I think Meijer is like Kroger. Family Fair is a little bit more expensive. They're smaller stores, I don't know.

Speaker 1:

But yeah, so don't sleep on shopping. I know Maureen from Moe's Side Hustles, she kind of don't want to do it. But I mean, if you can make more and you kind of like, kind of like flex, you kind of control your own destiny a little bit, it's like how fast you shop, you know you're, you're doing the best you can, you're not waiting on a restaurant. You know what I mean. So I think that's what attracts me to that shopping as well as just being like quote, unquote under, you know not, you're not not your own boss, but like you're in control of whatever is happening. Same for like spark.

Speaker 1:

You know, sometimes you get a pickup order and you might sit there a half hour, even. You might sit there 20 minutes before you even are able to even go to fucking pick it up. You know they send them out so early, but on, when you're shopping, you go there right away and you can knock it out. So check that out. Uh, what else did I? Oh sorry, I got distracted. Um, yeah, um. Well, let's just talk about the portable benefits. That's about all I got left for tonight. So I know I talked about it before. I got an email I don't know a couple of weeks ago from DoorDash, um and I. So I know I talked about it before I got an email I don't know a couple weeks ago from DoorDash, and I'm just going to read it. I did use ChatGBT and this is just. You know, it's great, it organizes shit so well, like I freaking love it.

Speaker 1:

But a lot of companies I shouldn't say a lot of DoorDash is pushing these portable benefits, and I think Bubba Sue had commented on that too. It's like why they are pushing it. So just a definition of portable benefits, which I didn't even know this was a thing, or maybe they curate it for gig work, but anyways, portable benefits are job-related benefits like health insurance, retirement savings, pto or worker's comp, that are not tied to a single employer. Instead, they follow the worker from job to job or gig to gig. This concept is especially relevant for gig economy workers, who often work for multiple platforms like DoorDash, uber and Sakaar and don't qualify for traditional employee benefits. So my first question on that can you get that in the W-2 world, although that wouldn't really matter, right, because they would offer their own. So it must be.

Speaker 1:

I would like to know yeah, see, this is where I should be chat. Gbting this while I'm talking is like was this here before? Gig workers? So why DoorDash is pushing portable benefits? They're protecting their independent contractor model. So DoorDash classifies its drivers as independent contractors and employees. If gig workers were reclassified, they would be required to provide full employment benefits. So that's why they're pushing it. Like makes sense. They're trying to advocate for a like middle ground solution um, like supporting them but keeping them independent contractors. Um, so it's shared responsibility across all platforms. But I I wonder how that's gonna work. Like I, they can do whatever they want, right, they're a technology company. They can figure it out. But if you do one Uber Eats delivery, that was like you know 20 minutes, how much of the benefits? Like how does that work for benefits? Like, let's say, I did one Uber Eats for the entire week and then the rest DoorDash Like I'd be curious to know how they break that down.

Speaker 1:

Now, this is where you may disagree with me. I think this is good. I really do think this is good. I think it doesn't get us as employers and we've always talked about. I've always said I don't. I want to be, uh, an independent contractor. Yeah, you can handle your own benefits, traveler, but paid time off, all that other stuff. I want to be an independent contractor, but I don't want to be a W-2. I don't want to lose that flexibility. That's the bottom line, is the flexibility. I did flex for a couple of days and now I didn't work today, I'm not going to work tomorrow. No one's calling me, no one's dinging me because I didn't show up.

Speaker 1:

But you guys say you want to handle your own benefits. But if you could have it one way or the other, if you were forced to, wouldn't you want it this way over the other way? I don't know. It is interesting, though Prop 22 might be a little bit better as I think about it, because they just give you money. Then you can do with it what you want. Right, you can buy your own benefits, or you can save it for paid time off, or well, you said no, but I said would you rather have, or maybe would you rather have it? You know, as an employee, or I see what you're saying yeah, you don't want any of them. Well, we may not have a choice. So that's why it's super important, if that stuff comes up on the ballot or whatever, that we get out there and vote for that stuff.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, doordash is calling for state-level legislation to create portable benefit funds. They have also supported pilot programs and partnerships to test models. So gigaworkers get stipends, which is kind of like Prop 22 for health or retirement benefits. But yeah, I mean, I don't, we gotta, we gotta separate that. This is coming from doordash because, like this is out there, stop, my dog is licking my leg. Do you have dogs and they lick your legs? And then or lick your hands or whatever, and you're like, oh, that's fine. Then, all of a sudden, it gets too much.

Speaker 1:

You think three states already have this. All right, well, let's ask benefits, is the one, one of those words I can't spell, worth a shit? I forget the e. Um, there we go. This is the problem when I do this, though, when I google, this is what we do on the patreon, because if I'm like doing a rig, uh, a regular show or whatever, and I start doing this shit, I forget what I was talking about, or I forget my point or whatever. Oh, let's see, it's a little slow tonight, okay.

Speaker 1:

So, uh, states that have passed portable benefit laws are pilots. Utah is the first to enact permanent portable benefits under sb 233 in 2023, so alabama in early 2025. Tennessee, uh, geez, bubba, sue, you're so damn smart, tennessee. So, utah, alabama, alabama, tennessee, wisconsin has proposed a bill that says it's not yet law. Yet they proposed it in may of of this year. It's widely supportive of actively moving through the legislature. It's a hard word Pennsylvania, maryland, georgia, not full of laws, yet these state-hosted DoorDash-led pilot programs in partnership with Stride. So, hmm, good job. Babasu Shit. So yeah, there's California, okay, babasoo Shit. So yeah, there's California. Okay, we know California. Hmm. So yeah, utah was like first on the bandwagon.

Speaker 1:

Sorry, I'm reading. I know that's super boring. Yeah, I'm surprised Michigan has not done this. Uh, although I want to say it's kind of a left-leaning thing and some of these states on here are. But tennessee, sure isn't. Alabama, sure isn't. Maryland. Georgia sure isn't. Isn't Maryland. Georgia, sure isn't. I don't know.

Speaker 1:

I know you guys are going to disagree with me, but I, I don't know if I could get, if I could do the same work and get other stuff. Like, why wouldn't you do that? What? What are y'all's worry about not being. You know, if that did happen, let's just stick to the portable benefit stuff. What would what would be your like? What would your worry be that? What would happen if that did get passed in your state?

Speaker 1:

Let me go back down here a little bit. So, uh, bubba, sue, new jersey introduced proposals to create a portable benefit we needed to say PBS for service concerts, though not enacted yet. So you're on there. I don't know if that's going to be a thing for you, but nothing else on the books for Michigan, let's see Utah, tennessee, alabama, wisconsin, pennsylvania I don't know if I know anyone. I know a few, obviously, california, I don't know. Well, jiminy is in Massachusetts.

Speaker 1:

So, yeah, it's coming. It's coming down the pike. Is it coming down the pipe I did that just so you heard me or coming down the pipe? Pipe, you can tell your own benefits, but my, you didn't answer my question. Pipe is this, is it pipe? You'd answer my question, though.

Speaker 1:

If everything stayed the same and you got more money, what would be the problem with that? In Bubba Sioux, new Jersey is trying to push through. Very bad luck. Yeah, I don't know what it says, because you feel like a lot of this shit. It says, oh, this is this, but then they have all the other bullshit along with it, right? What do they call that? The pig or the pork, the fat or whatever? That's what I freaking hate about when they pass stuff like this. It just pisses me off insurance costs more through portable benefits.

Speaker 1:

Well, here's the thing. That's why I kind of like the Prop 22, right, because they just give. You could be like damn it Traveler. They just give you the money and you can do whatever you want with it and that's like okay, I can tailor my own benefits to my own needs. That's perfect, right, tailoring my own benefits to my own needs. Hey, katie on TikTok, appreciate you.

Speaker 1:

Okay, we're having a big discussion on if it's oh shit, what was the coming down the pike or coming down the pipe? I know I can Google it, but Ultra says advantage mode was introduced to my market this week. I'm currently in advantage mode and have seen a huge, so ultra advantage mode was introduced to my market this week. I'm currently in advantage mode and have seen a huge, so ultra advantage mode. So I have that in my. So I don't do a lot of ride share.

Speaker 1:

I know there's like advantage mode and then there's is it exclusive? But you have to be like a certain tier to get exclusive. But I've been offered exclusive stuff, even though I'm my. I cherry picked the hell out of things. So all right, now I gotta google it. Well, I'm not gonna google it.

Speaker 1:

Oh no, what happened? Is it coming down the pike or pipe? I just got to know. The correct phrase is coming down the pike. The pike is short for turnpike, which refers to a main road or highway. So something coming down the pike means something approaching or merging, like a car or an event, or coming toward you on the road. People often mistakenly say coming down the pipe. Probably think of a. Well, you know what? What fuck it? I think both of them are fine.

Speaker 1:

So back to advantage mode. I don't know, I don't do rides, but you're always right, you need to start your own show. Yeah, I don't know, I don't know much about advantage mode. I maybe we'll talk to larry about that on wednesday, because although he hasn't been driving a lot either and he just recently got the upfront pricing.

Speaker 1:

So, yeah, well, back to the portable benefits thing. I think it's a good thing as long as I'm not uh, yeah, it couldn't be a plumber? Yeah, I'm sure that's what they use. Yeah, I couldn't be a plumber. Yeah, I'm sure that's what they use, as long as I think if it's a cash-like stipend that I can distribute how I want. But that's the thing how many people actually do what you're supposed to do? Right, if you get an extra $500 for the month, you should put that aside for a rainy day, or you should buy benefits with it. I mean, see, that's the thing, I don't need benefits. I either have benefits for my W-2, but currently I don't take them and my wife? I'm on my wife's plan, but it would be nice to have some of that money to put away on a rainy day fund. But that's just me.

Speaker 1:

So sounds like everyone in here is against it, which is fine. I mean that's, that's totally fine. Fine, I would have to see more details on it too. Like bubba, sue said that uh, the it's bad legislation. Well, if there's a bunch of other terrible stuff uh involved with just pushing that through, I don't think it's, you know, very good for uh, good for anybody. So, yeah, so that's all I got and uh appreciate you guys.

Speaker 1:

Talk to steve steve. Uh, steve is so busy and he's uh under the weather and, yeah, I cannot keep up with steve. I don't know how how he manages every day. Maybe maybe that's why he's under the weather he burned himself out but I do need to get him on the show. We had him on god. When we have him? Oh, we had him on like a couple months ago and we were talking about the colorado, the shit over there, but which I never even heard the end of. I'm so far behind in his podcast too. I'm like six episodes behind, so I need to get on top of that. But well, thank you guys, uh, for joining the show.

Speaker 1:
