178. Why Group Coaching Creates Real Change

Laura Sexton Season 4 Episode 3

We’re living in a trust recession. People are unsubscribing, deleting courses, and drowning in information—yet nothing is changing. The problem isn’t motivation or discipline. It’s isolation.

In this episode, I explain why group coaching creates real change when doing it alone doesn’t. We’ll talk about why information without accountability leads to paralysis, why most courses get abandoned, and why real momentum rarely happens in isolation.

If you’ve tried to get your money under control on your own and keep stalling out, this episode will help you understand why—and what actually works instead. You don’t need another idea. You need movement. And movement happens best in relationship.

Hey, accelerators, have you heard the term trust recession? I am shocked by what I am seeing online. People are unsubscribing from email lists, deleting courses. They feel overwhelmed by information and what's even worse? They keep buying information, thinking that it's gonna help them, and they find that there's not anybody to hold them accountable. There's nobody to walk'em through it when it's hard. You know what drives me absolutely insane. You cannot get a person on a phone to ask a question until after you've talked to 18 different robots. You can't understand me when you're like, just say whatever word that you need so I can get you to the right person. You can't understand me, so I'm just yelling at the phone and I'm begging for an operator, and you're like, do you wanna talk to the parts department? No, I wanna talk to a person. I'm so sick of it, to be completely honest. I just got myself off on a tangent of anger because I just spent 25 minutes on hold with the water and power department trying to make sure they got my application to make sure that my service can get connected. What are we doing? So there's no doubt in my mind that people are unsubscribing and disconnecting from all of this. And they are desperate for relationships with people. Coaching is for when doing it alone isn't going to make it work. That's why I do what I do. And people aren't lazy and they're not unmotivated. They wanna get things done, but there's too much information and people are left feeling completely muddled. And when they're muddled, they can't decide. And so they don't decide, they don't move, they don't make anything happen. If you've tried to do this money thing on your own and you keep stalling out, this episode is gonna explain why and what actually works instead. I wanna give you a big reframe in the middle of this AI generation trying to change how people operate in the world. We are people, and people need people, and life change doesn't happen with a computer. Life change happens in relationship. One thing that I have learned in the course of my business is that people don't need more ideas. They don't need more information. They need movement. They need progress and movement rarely ever happens in isolation. I myself just signed up for this really big course, and they're like, Hey, we've got a couple options for you. You can spend$3,000 and you get all the bells and whistles to the course, or you can spend$18,000 and you can have a person that walks alongside with you. Which one do you think I picked hearing my rant that I just had? Which one do you think I picked? Absolutely. I spent the bigger amount of money because I have already found in the first two months that if I don't have a person walking alongside going, did you do this? Did you do this? Did you do this? I would not have done it, and I would've wasted my money. Why? Because they gave me this beautiful program and there were too many options and I couldn't decide where to start. And by not deciding, I made no progress, no momentum was created, and then I started doing the shame spiral, right? And I was starting to hide and starting to feel bad about it. And the more bad I felt about it, and that's not good English, the worse I felt about it, the less decision making I had. And I started to spiral and spiral. And then I was like, why am I spending this money? I'm not doing any of the work. This is why the courses get abandoned. 80% of courses get abandoned, and it's not because they're bad, but it's because information without any sort of accountability isn't going to create the change. The people that are desperate for the information, it's amazing. I'm so excited that you are here and that you want to learn more, but you have to do something about it. Just hearing about it isn't gonna create any kind of change. You've got to make a move. And that's why I have just recently started group coaching because this is what's gonna create major breakthroughs for a lot of people. Now, let me tell you, I love my one-on-one coaching. I don't think I'll ever stop one-on-one coaching. It's absolutely amazing, super fun. But because my time is limited, my rates keep going up, which is a great problem to have. But it means that a lot of people aren't able to get the help and accountability that they need. And that breaks my heart. I don't want that to be a thing. And that's why I started doing group coaching work and have more of you at a lower price point where we can learn. I was an actor for a decade. Okay? And one of the things that I did when I was an actor is I signed up for something called the Actor's Accountability Salon. Now, I love my time at Salon. I love my time at John Rosenfeld Studios. I've never felt like more of an actor than when I was in these two spaces. I credit the life that I have now to being coached by John Rosenfeld. Because he was able to ask a really pointed question, and maybe one day I'll tell you about it, but that's not today. But I was never acting alone. I was constantly being fed into and learning from other people. As an actor, I learned more by watching other people acting than I would just doing it on my own. You can't have a one-sided conversation. I can't be a monochromatic actor. I have to have somebody that I'm listening to that I'm playing off of. Now the Accountability salon, what it did for me was the business side of acting. It's called show Business, and there's a reason why there are more letters in the word business than the word show. Okay? There is a business to it, and one of the best things about being in this group was not what I was taught. It was not, oh, I got my time an hour a month where I was getting fed into and I was learning so much. No, no, no. I got my hour of time, but I got everybody else's hour of time as well. I was not just learning from the questions that I asked or the mistakes that I made, but I was watching everybody else. I was seeing what worked for them. I was seeing what problems they were running into. I was learning what not to do. I didn't just grow from my own experiences. I grew faster because I got to learn from everyone else's. Now, could I have done all of those things by myself? Yes, absolutely. There was nothing being done inside the group that I could not have done on my own, but I had been trying to do it on my own. And what I did in a year of actress salon had taken me four years prior to getting into that. This is borrowed learning. Okay. I'm borrowing from their mistakes. It's pattern recognition. I'm watching and I'm seeing what is working for them. I'm recognizing it, and I wanna do that too. It's also seeing the consequences without having to pay full price for it. Right? Oh, they did that when they fell flat on their face. I'm not doing that one. In a group. You can't hide. And sometimes that's super, super scary, right? Sometimes it's like, okay, I am in this group, but I don't wanna talk about my problems or my misgivings. Let me tell you, everybody in that group is worried about everybody seeing their problems and their misgivings. But you can't grow unless you bring it out into the light. If you just let shame fester and grow inside of you, whatever it is you're ashamed of, and the shame shrinks. It's full on amazing how that works. And inside the group, you can't hide from inaction either. People are gonna see that you didn't do what you said you were gonna do, and sometimes this is exactly what you need. It forces you when you're inside this group to do the things that you would've avoided had you been alone. Being around others is gonna create some massive motivation because whether you feel like you're ready or not, people are going to push you towards action. People are going to push you towards becoming a better person. When you say your goal out loud. You stop swapping it out for a shinier one. That's a really big deal, guys, because I know a lot of you out there, you're saying, oh, I wanna save an emergency fund. I wanna get out of debt. I wanna have money in retirement. I wanna make sure my kids are taken care of. I wanna make sure that we go on vacations. I want to, and you just have a laundry list of things that you wanna do. I get that when I tell you to pick a goal and say it out loud in front of the group. We're all gonna hold you accountable to hit that goal. And sometimes you're like, no, I wanna hurl up and hide in the corner. But you're never gonna get to where you wanna go. I want you to get to where you wanna go. Group coaching is going to remove the escape hatch. There's not gonna be a quick escape route. There's no eject button. You gotta do the hard stuff and I get it. I get it. You're gonna feel like, oh, there's gonna be so much pressure to do what? No, no, no, no. It's not pressure. Nobody's pushing on you. We're all pulling you up. We all want better for you. Nobody's pushing you. We're bringing you along. Everybody's moving forward together. There's something about forward momentum that we can all go a little bit faster'cause we go together. Your presence. It's going to cause you to move forward. It's awesome. I love group coaching and, let me say this clearly in case you're like, no, but I can't go in there and talk about my money. Nobody's looking at you. To be completely honest. Everybody wants you to succeed and everybody's cheering for you and rooting for you, but everybody's so worried about their own thing. It's like when I was 16, I had a pimple. It was like right above my left eyebrow. I had this pimple and I spent the whole day looking at everybody's foreheads, and I was like, they're all looking at this giant pimple. And I said something to a friend of mine later, I was like, oh, this pimple. And she's like, oh, I didn't even notice she had a pimple. Did you see mine? She had spent the entire day thinking everybody was looking at hers, and I'd spent the entire day thinking, everybody's looking at mine, but everybody's looking at their own problems, their own pimples. Nobody cares about yours. We're just happy you're here. And that is human nature. We're also concerned about what people are gonna think about us and our problems, but nobody else is looking at us and our problems. So I'm just gonna say this very clearly. I want you in group coaching. I wanna work with you. I want people to build you up. I want you to bring people along with you as you build yourself. But group coaching is not for someone who wants to stay stuck. If you're like, no, no, no, I'm comfortable here. I don't wanna change. I highly recommend you go and listen to my podcast last week on doing uncomfortable things financially and what kind of amazing outcomes that can have for you. But if you want to stay stuck, group coaching's not for you.'cause we are going to push you forward. We're not gonna let you stay there. We are done with people languishing. We're not gonna let you languish. Group coaching also doesn't work for people that are unwilling to put their pride in the line to make progress. If you're gonna say you're gonna show up and you didn't do the work, so you're gonna skip this week, that's not gonna work. You're not gonna be able to make any progress. You didn't do the work. Okay, come show up, tell us you didn't do it, and tell us why. That way you can get the coaching so that you don't stay stuck. You don't keep letting your pride get in the way of your progress. And look, if you are wanting one-on-one attention, then you should do one-on-one coaching. That's fine. Group coaching isn't for everybody. But Group coaching works because everyone is choosing movement over comfort and they're choosing to do it together. You don't need another idea, friend. You don't. But what you do need is to stop doing this alone. Put all of the the gurus aside. Stop listening to 900 podcasts about what you would like to do one day, and do it. Come join our Money Mastery Group.
