In this episode, Marty gives Clif the movie Moonlight to watch and Clif gives Marty the movie The Martian to watch.

Clif and Marty blast off to Mars before coming back down to Earth for one of the most acclaimed dramas of the last decade.

First up is The Martian, where Matt Damon finds himself stranded on the Red Planet with nothing but potatoes, duct tape, disco and an unreasonable amount of optimism. Clif and Marty debate the film's direction, pacing and if the science is 'hard' or not.

Then they turn to Moonlight, Barry Jenkin's Academy Award winning coming-of-age drama starring Mahershala Ali. Clif and Marty discuss quiet storytelling, unforgettable performances and how the film's themes of identity and loneliness create a powerful counterpoint to The Martian. Sometimes the biggest journey isn't through space. It's figuring out who you are.

Along the way: 1980s slang, listener mail and potatoes as a survival strategy.

00:30.90
Clifton Campbell

00:35.10
Marty Ketola
Yeah.

00:41.59
Clifton Campbell
i don't know why I don't know why we did.

00:41.53
Marty Ketola
Yeah.

00:43.55
Clifton Campbell
I know why I did that to you with the Martian, but I don't know why you did the Moonlight to me.

00:49.30
Marty Ketola
Because Green Book.

00:51.06
Clifton Campbell
Yeah. Oh, Mahershala.

00:51.89
Marty Ketola
They're both best picture winners and they both have. Yeah. yeah And I but I had no idea what this movie was about. I had no clue.

00:59.64
Clifton Campbell
did moon night it Did Moonlight win Best Picture?

00:59.67
Marty Ketola
Nothing.

01:02.26
Marty Ketola
It did. It beat La La Land. Remember?

01:04.89
Clifton Campbell
Oh, that's right.

01:05.88
Marty Ketola
It was the controversy movie.

01:06.10
Clifton Campbell
o I don't know if I agree with that.

01:10.90
Marty Ketola
It's weird, huh?

01:12.46
Clifton Campbell
We'll talk about it.

01:13.05
Marty Ketola
Yeah. But yeah, we're back. It's ah be another upbeat episode of Talking Pondo here. ah But since we're mixing things backwards and forwards and left and right and up and down, you have fewer mail for us.

01:27.05
Clifton Campbell
Let's do it.

01:30.43
Clifton Campbell
Can you believe it? I have viewer mail for us. That's insanity. Insanity. Anyways, I'm grabbing that right now. Give me just a second. So it is from Isabel Teran.

01:42.52
Clifton Campbell
Good old Izzy. And she says, I say I don't like hamburger the motion picture, but I've seen it three times and still laugh at it, even though I know it's terrible.

01:43.11
Marty Ketola
huh

01:51.96
Clifton Campbell
Guess I know what movie Cliff is covering on That's Bodacious, dude.

01:54.90
Marty Ketola
Oh.

01:55.51
Clifton Campbell
and And the answer is absolutely

02:00.34
Marty Ketola
Stay tuned.

02:02.22
Clifton Campbell
I have an excellent copy of that and I cannot wait to talk about it. It's going to be lot

02:05.24
Marty Ketola
Nice. Yes, we will both be guests on episodes of That's Bodacious, Dude. hosted by Izzy T. I'm doing the monkey shines.

02:13.33
Clifton Campbell
of fun.

02:14.11
Marty Ketola
I don't know when that's coming out soon. And then Cliff's doing hamburger because her show is all about the eighties and we lived through the eighties.

02:21.04
Clifton Campbell
That's right.

02:22.27
Marty Ketola
So we can, you know, and what year was,

02:22.90
Clifton Campbell
Oh yeah. I laughed at hamburger. The motion picture. It was 83. believe.

02:28.49
Marty Ketola
83, so you're going to figure out what type of eighty slang fits hamburger the motion picture. Now, a little spoiler alert, Monkey Shines came out in 88, about a month before I met you, actually, strangely enough.

02:35.87
Clifton Campbell
That's good call.

02:40.36
Clifton Campbell
Uh

02:43.29
Marty Ketola
And I had to think back, well, what what word fit And I said, Monkey Shines is rad.

02:50.33
Clifton Campbell
huh.

02:50.20
Marty Ketola
Because 1988,

02:51.49
Clifton Campbell
Good call.

02:51.83
Marty Ketola
it was rad

02:52.05
Clifton Campbell
Good call.

02:52.95
Marty Ketola
but

02:53.30
Clifton Campbell
Well, so, uh, hamburgers, I was wrong. Hamburgers actually 86.

02:57.59
Marty Ketola
Oh, boy. That

02:58.87
Clifton Campbell
So I should be able to get away with something close like that. I think I want to say maybe in 86, a lot of us were saying wicked.

03:02.00
Marty Ketola
might actually be bodacious.

03:08.40
Marty Ketola
Mm-hmm.

03:09.27
Clifton Campbell
That's pretty wicked.

03:09.10
Marty Ketola
Mm-hmm.

03:10.01
Clifton Campbell
Like that's wicked. Cause I remember my grandfather would be like, it's not wicked.

03:11.40
Marty Ketola
It's still around.

03:13.35
Clifton Campbell
It's good. And I'm like, ah, you don't get it.

03:14.43
Marty Ketola
remember when Wicked appeared around 84, and it hung around for a few years.

03:16.37
Clifton Campbell
Oh man.

03:20.06
Clifton Campbell
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

03:21.66
Marty Ketola
lot of that valley speak became a lot of that slang. Yeah. Mm-hmm.

03:27.19
Clifton Campbell
Gag me with a spoon. Gag me with a smurf. Gag me with a bloody smurf. Gag me, gag me, gag me. Anyway.

03:33.95
Marty Ketola
Gag me. Awesome. Totally awesome.

03:36.47
Clifton Campbell
so

03:38.97
Marty Ketola
All right, Hamilton.

03:39.77
Clifton Campbell
All right, Hamilton. Yes.

03:42.78
Marty Ketola
So M&M today, the other M being monkey shines, because I watched them all in the same week.

03:44.27
Clifton Campbell
Which one do you want to start? Yeah. Oh, yeah. well Yeah. M&M. That's interesting.

03:51.54
Marty Ketola
And next week is B&B.

03:51.91
Clifton Campbell
Oh, Triple M. Yeah.

03:53.18
Marty Ketola
So, know,

03:55.38
Clifton Campbell
Interesting. What do you want to first? Moonlight or the Martian?

03:59.71
Marty Ketola
Uh, let's defer to the guest. They have flipped the coin and Rosencrantz has said it's gummed up heads again. So I guess we have to start with the Martian.

04:12.85
Clifton Campbell
The Martian it is. Sounds good. All right. The Martian.

04:16.82
Marty Ketola
What is this movie that's already so old that never watched?

04:17.27
Clifton Campbell
I am. Yes.

04:23.18
Marty Ketola
And then I went, Hey, that's Nate from Ted Lasso.

04:27.47
Clifton Campbell
Mm hmm. The Martian 2015 PG 13, two hours, 24 minutes. An astronaut stranded on Mars must rely on his ingenuity to survive and arrange a potential rescue.

04:39.99
Clifton Campbell
directed but

04:39.88
Marty Ketola
Spoiler.

04:41.20
Clifton Campbell
Directed by Ridley Scott, ah written by Andy Weir, who also just released Project Hail Mary. I'm starring Matt Damon. And let's see here. Let me get your story on.

04:51.48
Marty Ketola
Not damn on.

04:53.11
Clifton Campbell
Not Damon. during a mad mission to mars astronaut mark watney is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew but watney has survived and finds himself stranded in alone on a hostile planet with only meager supplies he must draw upon his ingenuity wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to earth that he is alive Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring the Martian home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible, rescue mission.

05:22.71
Clifton Campbell
As these stories of incredibly brave incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney's safe return.

05:30.14
Marty Ketola
Yeah, that is all the main beats there.

05:30.46
Clifton Campbell
The Martian.

05:32.46
Marty Ketola
you know

05:32.91
Clifton Campbell
Yeah. Mm-hmm.

05:33.98
Marty Ketola
ah It's a science lesson disguised as a movie.

05:38.37
Clifton Campbell
It's so one of the things that I think a lot of people when this book came out, I read this book, I'll say starting off and say the book is a fantastic read. Listener, if you like reading books, or you know, movies that are books that are based on movies or so on this one's going to really stick out to you. I think it's well, really well written. It's one of those books that you can't kind of put down. You just kind of keep reading it. It's really well written, paced really well.

06:01.78
Clifton Campbell
um It's pretty true to the book. ah You know, as far as the, you know, it's states it's it's you had to cut a few things here and there, you know, a few jokes, a few small things, but just for, you know, time, but it's really well written and really well done. So it, I think, yeah, translates really well onto screen.

06:23.90
Marty Ketola
it's It's funny that we just watched Space Camp because this is very much like Space Camp, as in this is what we're going to do in the emergency situations, which is why I say it's like a science lesson disguised as a movie.

06:29.15
Clifton Campbell
Yeah.

06:36.97
Clifton Campbell
Yeah.

06:36.76
Marty Ketola
What happens when this happens? Well, we'll do this. But what if this happens then?

06:39.63
Clifton Campbell
Yeah.

06:40.64
Marty Ketola
Well, then we'll do this.

06:42.33
Clifton Campbell
Yeah. oh

06:42.80
Marty Ketola
It's like marooned, you know, we're trapped in space. Let's get Gene Hackman back to Earth, you know.

06:48.34
Clifton Campbell
Yeah. And um on my apologies. One of the things that people liked, my apologies, I i lost my train thought there for second. One of my my things that like people liked about this book was that the the science is relatively plausible, right?

06:58.28
Marty Ketola
Mm-hmm.

06:59.26
Clifton Campbell
it's not It's science fiction, but the science is relatively what they call hard science, right? Like some of this stuff could possibly be done. He he did a lot of checking with people to on facts and figures and stuff.

07:12.44
Clifton Campbell
you know, that, that seal that breaks, you know, when he keeps going in and out of that door and now of that door, it finally explodes. Like I love that the movie gives you clues. Like you keep hearing the alarms and the seals going as he's going in and out and it doesn't occur to you until it blows off. Like, Oh yeah.

07:31.10
Clifton Campbell
Yeah. And he figures that out and realizes he's got three entryways and he should have been spreading his time out. Right. And so, ah I like that. I think that it's really smart that the book works on the hard sciences of of forcing him to try to figure out how is he going to travel to this distant place?

07:45.82
Marty Ketola
Mm-hmm.

07:47.89
Clifton Campbell
How is he going to stay warm? How is he going to feed himself? You know, oh, he's going farm in his own shit. Well, that's creative.

07:54.02
Marty Ketola
Mm-hmm.

07:55.46
Clifton Campbell
Yikes.

07:56.66
Marty Ketola
Yeah, those are the best parts of the movie where he's just like, I'm going to do this, and you can't stop me. you know That was the entertaining part.

08:01.88
Clifton Campbell
Yeah. Yeah.

08:03.12
Marty Ketola
Yeah.

08:04.73
Clifton Campbell
Yeah.

08:04.96
Marty Ketola
But ultimately, it's... it's I don't want to say this in a bad way. It's it's propaganda, but it's good propaganda because it's supposed to get people interested in space travel and stuff, right?

08:15.62
Marty Ketola
it's to get you hyped up and go, look, we can we can do this, guys, you know?

08:18.84
Clifton Campbell
it's it's it's very It's very optimistic and pro-NASA for sure.

08:21.85
Marty Ketola
Yeah, it's optimistic stuff, yeah.

08:23.52
Clifton Campbell
For sure. For sure. Yeah. Which so was Space Camp.

08:25.91
Marty Ketola
And that's a good thing. it's a good And so is Space Camp, right?

08:27.38
Clifton Campbell
Yeah.

08:28.51
Marty Ketola
I think it's a good thing in that way.

08:29.21
Clifton Campbell
Yeah, absolutely.

08:30.07
Marty Ketola
But I was like, oh, I see what it's doing.

08:30.82
Clifton Campbell
Mm-hmm.

08:33.53
Marty Ketola
that's And that's why I think, you know, kind of story-wise and stuff that wasn't the strongest stuff but it was all about watching him survive and what do you do it was like a much more better version of send help yeah

08:43.53
Clifton Campbell
It's yes.

08:47.99
Clifton Campbell
Yeah. Or, or like you said, like, um like you said, like Castaway or something where the guy, you know, and that's in the book, he has this very optimistic, he's not a defeatist.

08:52.79
Marty Ketola
yeah yeah

08:59.37
Clifton Campbell
He's an optimist. He's, he's going to do everything that he can to, to save himself.

09:00.12
Marty Ketola
who

09:04.05
Clifton Campbell
And he does. Right. And, He's also got a ah great gallows humor. You know, those things he points out where he's like, oh, look, I grew food on Mars. So I've officially colonized Mars.

09:15.62
Clifton Campbell
Thank you.

09:15.64
Marty Ketola
home

09:16.57
Clifton Campbell
The first person to colonize Mars.

09:16.47
Marty Ketola
you

09:18.09
Clifton Campbell
Look at me. I'm in the history books with that.

09:19.29
Marty Ketola
one

09:19.65
Clifton Campbell
Oh, by the way, I'm not allowed to take over this spaceship without express written permission. And they can't give me that until I'm on it. So therefore, I'm commandeering a vehicle in international waters. I'm a fucking space pirate.

09:30.39
Marty Ketola
The very first space pirate.

09:31.76
Clifton Campbell
it's, it's brilliant stuff.

09:32.31
Marty Ketola
That's the best part the movie.

09:33.82
Clifton Campbell
It's so good.

09:33.93
Marty Ketola
Yeah.

09:34.78
Clifton Campbell
It's so fun. It's so first, what has got to be the most dreadful experience for any human being to be trapped on a goddamn planet so far away by yourself.

09:46.09
Clifton Campbell
He really manages to overcome it with a great attitude. And like he says at the end, just getting to it and doing the work, you know, but I, I like the look of Mars.

09:54.20
Marty Ketola
hu

09:58.72
Clifton Campbell
I think it looks right. You know, I, I,

10:00.90
Marty Ketola
this is way better looking movie than Blade Runner.

10:03.93
Clifton Campbell
it looks so good.

10:05.30
Marty Ketola
Because Ridley's has the ability to craft a much slicker movie than that.

10:10.84
Clifton Campbell
It's, it looks so good. It looks, it looks, no, no, it's, it's, it's a different aesthetic too.

10:12.86
Marty Ketola
Not to say that Blade Runner doesn't look good, but you see what I mean? It's like that was for 40 years ago. Yeah.

10:18.23
Clifton Campbell
You know, and he's got, he's, he's had the, the you know, the benefit of CGI and, you know, roving, ro you know, cameras and drones and all kinds of shit now i'm making alien.

10:18.07
Marty Ketola
yeah

10:24.50
Marty Ketola
Making Alien.

10:26.78
Clifton Campbell
Yeah. But, um, I think the story is pretty compelling and I can't imagine doing surgery on myself after, you know, that's just scary stuff.

10:36.05
Marty Ketola
yeah he's little rambo there. Yeah.

10:38.20
Clifton Campbell
Yeah. Scary stuff. And, you know, there's that scene where he's, um, He sealed up the the hab and pressurized it and he's counting all his food and that storm is hitting the hab.

10:50.07
Clifton Campbell
And it's just you can hear the the canvas whacking and it's just he just he's almost freezing going, oh, because he's just waiting for that seal to give away and for him to be sucked out into the Mars atmosphere and be dead in a heartbeat, you know, like, oh, my God.

11:06.07
Clifton Campbell
But yeah, I mean, and I also love the thing where he's like, I'm going to dip this potato and crushed fight it in and there's nothing anybody can do about this.

11:12.02
Marty Ketola
those are the best parts of the movie. That's why you told me not to watch the extended version and I didn't. And I almost feel like this thing was, I feel like both today's movies were too long.

11:22.80
Marty Ketola
Yeah.

11:23.35
Clifton Campbell
yeah This one, I think you could have probably peeled a bit from. Yeah, but you know, you need,

11:27.22
Marty Ketola
little bit. You need a lot of it for story, but some of the pacing is like, okay.

11:33.08
Clifton Campbell
I hear you.

11:33.20
Marty Ketola
Because it's, but but that's what it is though.

11:33.78
Clifton Campbell
I hear you. Um,

11:36.50
Marty Ketola
It's that type of

11:40.54
Marty Ketola
ah kind of an you know, action-y type thing. Like five minutes into the movie and I'm i'm fucking already checked out. Because I'm like, ice so it's going to be one of these fucking things. But then once he's there by himself, then it becomes interesting.

11:54.47
Marty Ketola
And then that stays interesting that whole middle part. And then when by the time it's like, okay, can we just fucking rescue him already? And then the movie's over. But I really like the middle of the movie the most.

12:05.77
Marty Ketola
That's the parts parts we keep praising, you know.

12:08.41
Clifton Campbell
the sort of this the sort of human story part of it right that

12:11.07
Marty Ketola
That's what, and I think that's the whole reason it was made is for those. Everything else is just the set dressing around it. and They don't really have a lot of personality. of The other people, the Chinese people have no personality at all.

12:22.31
Marty Ketola
We're not going to bother developing those characters, you know.

12:25.44
Clifton Campbell
Well, I think that's part of it.

12:26.30
Marty Ketola
about it and need a three hour movie.

12:27.49
Clifton Campbell
There's a little more of that in the extended. you get a you get You get a little more on like Kristen Wiig's character, Chiel Ejiofor's character.

12:32.09
Marty Ketola
Oh.

12:36.32
Marty Ketola
woefully miscast Kristen Wiig. I don't like to rag on actors, but I felt she was really out of place in this movie. like It seemed like she didn't know what she was doing.

12:45.43
Clifton Campbell
supposed to be in the book. She's sort of a smart mouthed PR person. She's this smart mouth, you know, get her done kind of, you know, ah

12:53.27
Marty Ketola
Her beats and her pacing felt weird to me.

12:54.97
Clifton Campbell
independent, independent agent type of woman who works for NASA does their PR. and And so she's got a pretty sharp tongue. And I don't know, I thought maybe they thought Kristen Wiig could carry that. But you're right.

13:05.42
Clifton Campbell
I mean, yeah, could be.

13:05.29
Marty Ketola
It might be an editing thing more than than her performance, you know, because I felt like she'd stop acting and it'd hold on her. And I'm like, shouldn't you be cutting to the other person?

13:15.74
Clifton Campbell
I like the actress who plays Mindy Park. She's the girl who figures out that he's alive on Mars.

13:22.13
Marty Ketola
Oh, yeah, yeah.

13:23.38
Clifton Campbell
um She's in a show called Halt and Catch Fire as one of the main actresses in that show. And she's fantastic. And it's a great show. I really like it. only went three seasons, but it's about the...

13:34.57
Clifton Campbell
It's about the that edge of the 80s, you and i remember, were where PCs became home computers and became that, you know, right before the internet.

13:45.02
Clifton Campbell
You know, that that phase where you had the TRS-80s or the whatever computers at the home. It's that phase.

13:49.60
Marty Ketola
Radio Shack.

13:50.81
Clifton Campbell
Yeah. so ah

13:52.94
Marty Ketola
The Martian brought me to the Radio Shack.

13:55.00
Clifton Campbell
So i um I do owe you an apology. and And here it is. I'm very sorry.

14:00.06
Marty Ketola
Well, thank you.

14:01.50
Clifton Campbell
You're welcome. I forgot that this movie is full of fucking disco. I completely forgot.

14:05.78
Marty Ketola
Oh, it's horribly full of disco. But at least the movie knows that it's bad.

14:11.58
Clifton Campbell
and and And I thought, when as I'm watching, I thought, well, at least the main character is shitting on the music for him. So he can at least enjoy that.

14:19.10
Marty Ketola
That was, um and you know, I did applaud at the end because i was like, yeah. But then the end credits started and I went, ugh.

14:29.11
Clifton Campbell
Oh, you got that i even for me, who doesn't really mind Disco, I Will Survive is so badly overplayed.

14:35.45
Marty Ketola
No.

14:37.50
Clifton Campbell
oof

14:38.14
Marty Ketola
look, they spent

14:38.81
Clifton Campbell
but But that whole Waterloo sequence, man, I'm watching that and I'm laughing so fucking hard as I'm watching because I know you are just like you are right now with that face.

14:49.30
Clifton Campbell
And i and i felt so I felt terrible.

14:49.26
Marty Ketola
I'm like one star removed immediately. who

14:53.11
Clifton Campbell
But at the same time, I'm like, it's such a good movie.

14:54.81
Marty Ketola
You didn't make the movie.

14:56.21
Clifton Campbell
I wanted you to see it.

14:57.02
Marty Ketola
Yeah, exactly.

15:00.31
Marty Ketola
Well, thank you for that. Cause I'm like, why is he feeding me? but

15:03.54
Clifton Campbell
I would never, I just, I, I, you know, look, if it's something where I really want you to see and it's disco, I'll make you watch it. But you know, if I know it's kind of bad and it's got to do, I'll, I'll avoid it. I just, I completely forgot.

15:12.88
Marty Ketola
Well, it brings up a,

15:15.26
Clifton Campbell
And I also thought it was more like, I thought it had more stuff like the happy days theme song and some other stuff in it that wasn't, you know, I didn't think it was all just like, there's a whole sections of fucking habit in that movie.

15:21.24
Marty Ketola
Well, it is in there.

15:27.61
Marty Ketola
yeah. And it makes me...

15:28.66
Clifton Campbell
It's like in concert.

15:29.94
Marty Ketola
It makes me realize, like, oh, you spent all this money on everything, but you got what is probably, I guess, the cheapest music to license on the fucking planet. Because you see this shit show up in so many movies and TV shows that I'm guessing ABBA and some of this other stuff must be easy to work with and easy to license and not cost very much. because This just keeps popping up over and over again.

15:53.18
Marty Ketola
I can't fucking escape this shit, man. ah It's like you spend all your money and we got like two bucks left for music. Well, ah well I know costs more than that, obviously.

16:06.36
Clifton Campbell
um I do like the hot stuff needle drop. I'll say this when he's.

16:09.75
Marty Ketola
Is that responsible for Hot Stuff being the temp track in our movie? I thought it might be. yeah

16:17.53
Clifton Campbell
Yes, it was. Yes, but I.

16:19.74
Marty Ketola
That was right before. That was really new when we shot that, yeah.

16:22.84
Clifton Campbell
It was, yeah. and And I do think it's probably one of the funnier uses because he is he's got that radio radioactive thing behind him and it's making the fucking cab really hot.

16:27.46
Marty Ketola
What

16:31.92
Clifton Campbell
and

16:32.18
Marty Ketola
does he say? This is the least worst song in her catalog.

16:34.84
Clifton Campbell
This is the least worst song and it's hot stuff, yeah.

16:38.10
Marty Ketola
ah

16:40.95
Clifton Campbell
So, speaking of odd casting, I thought Donald Glover was oddly cast also as Rich Parnell.

16:45.11
Marty Ketola
Yeah. I almost didn't even realize that two of that was.

16:47.47
Clifton Campbell
I was like, okay.

16:48.17
Marty Ketola
Hmm.

16:50.46
Clifton Campbell
He just... Hmm. Sure. I guess it it just didn't, he, he didn't, it didn't seem like he had a full handle on the part or something.

16:55.70
Marty Ketola
and don't think I don't think Ridley Scott's an...

17:00.24
Clifton Campbell
It was weird.

17:00.44
Marty Ketola
Yeah, I don't think...

17:01.04
Clifton Campbell
I'm not, and I'm not trying to rag on him. I'm just, it was just a weird performance.

17:04.41
Marty Ketola
I think Ridley Scott is not an actor's director. I think he's more focused on everything else.

17:08.10
Clifton Campbell
I would agree with that production design and shots.

17:10.17
Marty Ketola
He comes from the world of commercials originally, and so it's all about what it looks like, and the acting is like secondary, is how I felt.

17:17.56
Clifton Campbell
that would That would make sense why he's churning them fucking out one after the other after the other. that makes sense.

17:21.43
Marty Ketola
Mm-hmm.

17:22.68
Clifton Campbell
Like this dude is – Ridley has hit like a an assembly line chain in the last 20 years where he's just like – Every six months, here's – every six to 12 months, here's a new one.

17:29.61
Marty Ketola
Mm-hmm.

17:33.40
Clifton Campbell
you know Here you go. ah Napoleon, it bombed. Well, keep going. you know Here you go.

17:36.76
Marty Ketola
Keep going.

17:37.45
Clifton Campbell
How about that? bond Oh, good.

17:38.36
Marty Ketola
Mm-hmm.

17:38.84
Clifton Campbell
Keep going. Oh, that was a hit. That was a hit. He's just – it's crazy. Yeah.

17:46.23
Marty Ketola
Yeah, I feel that this movie and the other movie today and a lot of the movies from the last 10 or 15 years all share kind of the same thing. ah In so much as The Martian is the perfect example of it's everything that's right with movies nowadays and everything that's wrong with movies nowadays. Because as we've discovered going through a lot of these critically acclaimed films from the last 10 or 15 years, I watch them and I go,

18:13.91
Marty Ketola
Man, they're acting the shit out of this. But where's everything else? Then while it's back in the day, you'd have more of a the craft was harder to make the movies.

18:26.04
Marty Ketola
And so every aspect of the movie had to be worked on a lot more. And I feel like some of those older movies are more durable. And now it seems like there's a little shortcuts that are taken. And it's like the act and it's become just an acting medium.

18:38.98
Marty Ketola
But The Martian, outside of Matt Damon, really doesn't have a whole lot of intense, strong acting in it.

18:44.85
Clifton Campbell
No, it's well, it's he's on he to be fair, he's on screen 70% the time, right?

18:45.52
Marty Ketola
It's more of that. What I mean is. Yeah, what I mean is the modern movies that are good, they'll have a couple aspects that are just amazing in it.

18:58.49
Marty Ketola
But not the entire movie being amazing, only a few things. And most of the time, it's usually the acting in these modern films. That's the awesome part for me anyway. This one, it's like the technical aspect of it was the awesome part, I thought.

19:12.16
Clifton Campbell
I think, um I mean, I think that there are still movies that are made that are, you know, you know, from fade in to fade out, just amazing, right? Those are still being made.

19:23.59
Clifton Campbell
But I...

19:23.54
Marty Ketola
But these author bait films, these best picture winners and stuff, and those overly critically acclaimed, I'm i'm having trouble finding ones, even like I loved American fiction, but I still know that there's only parts of it that are great.

19:38.90
Clifton Campbell
I think that the the format has sort of shifted to this. The Martian is supposed to be an epic, right? It's supposed to be a a massive sweeping tale.

19:44.60
Marty Ketola
Yeah.

19:48.77
Clifton Campbell
It's got to be 230 because it's it's a five act. It's not a three act movie.

19:52.34
Marty Ketola
Mm-hmm.

19:53.33
Clifton Campbell
It's a five act movie. Beginning in space, lost on the thing, rebuild, travel to the thing, ah re regroup with the crew. That's five acts, right?

20:02.86
Marty Ketola
Mm-hmm.

20:04.30
Clifton Campbell
And that's just how it's made. So in in I think that people like you and I who grew up in the 80s with taught three act fucking badass movies everywhere. And there were some five act big long ones, Amadeus and shit like that.

20:17.44
Clifton Campbell
But for the most part, those were usually the big theatrical pieces. Like you said, Oscar swings, you know, going for that Oscar film. And what we saw in the cinema constantly was 90 minutes to an hour 45, hour 50 of just badassness where, you know, you're like you said, scene after scene is firing or.

20:33.40
Marty Ketola
Yeah. Even the cheat movies, they had to work their craft on every aspect because there was no shortcuts. Yeah.

20:40.54
Clifton Campbell
And here's what I'll say. Here's the other thing. As an audience, I remember that we were kind of fucking spoiled because there was so much good going around that we just literally throw shit away.

20:48.33
Marty Ketola
It's true.

20:50.94
Clifton Campbell
we' We're like, man, it doesn't work exactly. Boom. And now those movies, a lot of those movies are having a renaissance and you go back and look at him go, you know, I really didn't give this its fair shake because in the –

21:00.18
Marty Ketola
Okay.

21:02.33
Clifton Campbell
In the 80s, if it wasn't nines or tens or eights, people weren't watching that shit. if Those things other things ran to cable and ran to the VHS stores because that's where they were going to make their money.

21:10.40
Marty Ketola
Yeah,

21:14.10
Marty Ketola
yeah I think eventually we'll get back to that.

21:14.33
Clifton Campbell
you know So it's weird.

21:16.14
Marty Ketola
Yeah, I think it'll it'll come around to where it's like, okay, now we can do all the innovation plus the craft.

21:16.95
Clifton Campbell
I think so.

21:20.38
Clifton Campbell
I think this horror surge is helping. a i think this horror surge is helping. i remember I was telling somebody the other day, I don't remember another horror surge like this since the eighty s where it's just where they're just hitting the mainstream one after the other after the other.

21:34.07
Marty Ketola
late Scream.

21:36.60
Clifton Campbell
yeah Okay.

21:36.60
Marty Ketola
scream

21:40.89
Marty Ketola
because that leads to our favorites, The Ring and Paranormal Activity and all that good stuff. ah But it's funny you bring that up because

21:53.02
Marty Ketola
if if you're attuned to this type of movie, it's probably amazing for you, which is the same reason I like Scream 7 so much because I like that formula.

21:57.71
Clifton Campbell
Mm-hmm.

22:01.60
Marty Ketola
Well, if you like the space formula, then you're probably going to love that too. But I can still look at this one and go, well, it's still a really good movie though.

22:09.21
Clifton Campbell
This fucker plays um on like, but I go to my dad's for, you know, Thanksgiving or whatever, and he's got YouTube TV. And this fucker's on TNT and, you know, whatever, the channel constantly.

22:20.38
Marty Ketola
Oh, yeah.

22:21.10
Clifton Campbell
i mean, it's in constant rotation.

22:21.40
Marty Ketola
This is your My Cousin Vinny throw it on.

22:24.54
Clifton Campbell
You can, the exactly.

22:26.09
Marty Ketola
I think this worked even better than that.

22:26.42
Clifton Campbell
this This is a huge family picture because it's so optimistic.

22:28.49
Marty Ketola
Yeah.

22:29.90
Clifton Campbell
And it's got like a 91% rating, a popcorn and tomato rating on on Rotten Tomatoes. it's It's pretty universally agreed that it's pretty well made and pretty well liked.

22:40.86
Marty Ketola
Mm-hmm.

22:41.57
Clifton Campbell
I'm sure that there are people who, again, I'm not pointing fingers, but I'm sure that there are people out there who are like, not for me, I get it.

22:50.26
Marty Ketola
Oh, that's for everything.

22:50.62
Clifton Campbell
um

22:51.34
Marty Ketola
Yeah.

22:51.93
Clifton Campbell
But it is, but it is, yeah, but it is one of those films that's like, like you said, it's like, you can hate aspects of it or parts, but it's so well made and it's pretty well written.

23:02.86
Clifton Campbell
And Matt Damon's really acting the fuck out of that movie for the most part.

23:07.09
Marty Ketola
Mm-hmm.

23:07.94
Clifton Campbell
He's really on point um that, yeah, I mean, You can pick around the edges of it, I guess. but Or, you know, like I said, it might just might not be for you. I think my favorite part is the the David Bowie Starman needle drop, which is, hey, not not disco.

23:22.07
Marty Ketola
Oh

23:24.69
Clifton Campbell
It's not disco.

23:25.36
Marty Ketola
it' It's too on the nose.

23:27.77
Clifton Campbell
Oh, come on.

23:28.62
Marty Ketola
I'm sitting here groaning like, really? Okay, didn't see that coming. yeah

23:33.51
Clifton Campbell
i'll never I'll never complain about a Bowie tune in any film, so.

23:36.38
Marty Ketola
it was It was a nice relief from some of the other music, but I'm like, really?

23:41.78
Clifton Campbell
what the fuck you pitch about I mean you could have been fucking you know i mean what did you want on Project Hail Mary where they're heading towards the sun put some smash mouth on walking on the sun or something

23:41.64
Marty Ketola
He's going to space and we're playing the space thing. Okay.

23:56.38
Marty Ketola
Do they do that? I blame Marvel movies for this. That's Guardians of the Galaxy's fault.

24:05.08
Clifton Campbell
well then you can't blame Guardians of the Marvel you got to blame James Gunn

24:08.76
Marty Ketola
All right. We'll blame the ah author of Toxic Avenger Part 4 for it. James Gunn.

24:14.00
Clifton Campbell
Yeah, right. James Gunn. Congratulations, James.

24:16.50
Marty Ketola
Never forget your origins, James Gunn. I remember you in that movie and you're hilarious in it.

24:19.55
Clifton Campbell
That's getting a little hyping

24:22.49
Marty Ketola
PC or not.

24:23.93
Clifton Campbell
Getting a little high up in your tree there, aren't you, Mr. Gunn? Maybe we'll come down back down to Earth, touch some grass with us, Mr. Gunn. Hmm?

24:30.97
Marty Ketola
he can't the Martian it's a very good name has an excellent title for the movie he never once refers to himself as the Martian and nobody else ever does but it's such a perfect title for the movie because he is the Martian

24:31.67
Clifton Campbell
Hmm?

24:44.50
Clifton Campbell
Literally, literally. um I don't think I have anything else to say about it. Oh, I do have one other thing. Shitload of montages in this movie.

24:54.55
Marty Ketola
yeah yeah

24:57.99
Clifton Campbell
Like a shitload of montages. But again, if you if you listen to him.

24:59.96
Marty Ketola
and down that I'm spinning around.

25:06.42
Clifton Campbell
If you listen to him talk about how, especially during like the travel portion where he's moving with that rover, he said he's traveling like 2,700 kilometers.

25:17.37
Clifton Campbell
I mean, that's really far. That's not, I mean... It's it's a long that's a long track. That's that's that's weeks and weeks out there, you know.

25:23.74
Marty Ketola
yeah

25:26.24
Clifton Campbell
So I guess to Ridley's like, well, you know, i have to kind of move it along.

25:30.60
Marty Ketola
right.

25:31.10
Clifton Campbell
There is there is one interesting part of the book that they cut out of the movie and ah all they kind of infer it to a certain extent. But you know that when he drills holes in the top of the rover. Right.

25:44.15
Clifton Campbell
And then they knock the the roof out. But then you see that balloon that they blow up and it pops. Right. So I think that's a reference to in the book, right before he's going to go on this long journey, he's like, there's no way I'm going to be able to stay stuck in this rover in this spacesuit for like 40 days as we're traveling or however long it because it's weeks.

26:07.15
Clifton Campbell
He's like, going to have to take this thing off at some point. And the rover is small. He can't really. It's not like he can get up and move around in it. Right. It's a it's a vehicle to move a few people in. So.

26:16.06
Marty Ketola
Yeah.

26:17.11
Clifton Campbell
what he what he But he's got a trailer that he's that he's hauling with him and it's connected to the rover and he can go kind of back into that a little bit, right? Or something. Anyway, what he does is he knocks out or connect he creates a connecting a connection on a tube, like a one of the seals on the rover, right?

26:36.29
Marty Ketola
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.

26:37.14
Clifton Campbell
And he makes this thing that connects to it and it's like a pop-up tent, right? And so what he does is he at night when he's ready to go to, so you know, kind of relax or whatever he or take the suit off, he connects this thing to this seal and it pressurizes and it due to the rover's air pressure and it pops open and gives him like eight or it's like ah almost big enough like a jail cell for him to kind of stand up and walk around in and take the suit off and all that.

27:03.74
Marty Ketola
ah

27:04.89
Clifton Campbell
So i was like, i you know, I was when I read the book, i was like, I wonder how they're going to do that in the movie where they were like, oh, we're not going to.

27:09.74
Marty Ketola
Skip.

27:09.97
Clifton Campbell
We're just going to leave him in the stoop forever. Yeah.

27:13.18
Marty Ketola
Well, NASA, I hope you're listening. When you go to Mars, take way more supplies than you thought you were going to need. Find the Pathfinder, activate immediately. You know, there's all these things that you can do now because you have a plan.

27:28.18
Clifton Campbell
I wonder if NASA's like, from here on out, we're going to pack just a few vegetables just in case anybody ever has to farm in their poop.

27:34.09
Marty Ketola
Yeah, this little seed bank.

27:35.22
Clifton Campbell
You know, that way it's a little, yeah, a little seed bank.

27:36.38
Marty Ketola
then you hu Don't send people at the bare minimum.

27:37.86
Clifton Campbell
You know, that way he's got a little asparagus and little broccoli and potato and, you know. Yeah. Send some spices and herbs with them, you know.

27:47.96
Clifton Campbell
Well, that's the, that's the other great line where he, he, yeah, it's been seven days since I ran out of ketchup.

27:48.18
Marty Ketola
Exactly.

27:50.96
Marty Ketola
Ran out of ketchup. Just

27:56.38
Clifton Campbell
All I could think of was like, oof.

27:56.64
Marty Ketola
chewing that dry potato.

27:58.98
Clifton Campbell
oof Speaking of which, did you read about Kevin Smith and that potato thing?

28:04.44
Marty Ketola
Yeah, that came up on my feed too.

28:06.97
Clifton Campbell
Yeah.

28:06.86
Marty Ketola
But if long-term Howard Stern fans remember that he would have Gary Delabate bring him a baked potato for lunch every day. So I guess Howard was doing that shit years before it was popular.

28:18.39
Clifton Campbell
Interesting. Well, but but wasn't Howard putting something on it?

28:19.00
Marty Ketola
But that's just because Howard's eccentric.

28:20.97
Clifton Campbell
Wasn't he wasn't Howard putting but butter and shit on it?

28:21.53
Marty Ketola
No.

28:23.13
Clifton Campbell
Just just a potato hut.

28:23.35
Marty Ketola
Plain. That was back when he was having his weight issues as well. But apparently, what was the story? You eat potatoes all the time and it resets you.

28:33.11
Clifton Campbell
Yeah, and it you get you get tired of it. Like you get tired of food. It becomes like a reset where you're like, oh, I just don't i don't like eating anymore type of thing where he it allowed him to kind of quit the whole overconsumption.

28:45.62
Marty Ketola
Well, to quote Deathstalker 3, potatoes are what we eat.

28:46.04
Clifton Campbell
so I thought it was interesting.

28:52.98
Clifton Campbell
Potatoes, precious. Anyway.

28:56.79
Marty Ketola
I can catch you a rabbit. A rabbit? Potatoes are what we eat.

29:02.74
Clifton Campbell
So what do you give it? This is going be good.

29:04.73
Marty Ketola
Okay. ah Two and a half.

29:09.32
Clifton Campbell
Two and a half.

29:10.36
Marty Ketola
Yeah, one star off for Alba. And then another half star off for I Will Survive. You can't do that to me, movie. You can't.

29:18.81
Clifton Campbell
So that's three. So that's three and a half.

29:23.38
Clifton Campbell
One and a half stars. One star off minus a half stars.

29:25.53
Marty Ketola
I would have been at a four.

29:26.58
Clifton Campbell
Three and a half. Oh, you would have been out of four. Okay.

29:29.40
Marty Ketola
So if you, you know, and so in a way you can see that I'm running the gambit, but personally, two and a half.

29:30.72
Clifton Campbell
All right.

29:33.67
Clifton Campbell
I hear you two and a half okay

29:35.27
Marty Ketola
That's what I gave that Blade Runner, too. I must not be too keen on Ridley Scott in my old age.

29:41.21
Clifton Campbell
interesting uh I've seen this movie 15 times easily uh I like Mark's cheerfulness I like the story um I don't mind the disco and I never have.

29:56.66
Clifton Campbell
um It's a little, like I said, I will survive is one of the most overview songs.

30:01.65
Marty Ketola
It reminded me of the the replacements.

30:03.90
Clifton Campbell
And yeah.

30:04.41
Marty Ketola
And you know I hate this damn song.

30:07.31
Clifton Campbell
Oh man.

30:07.29
Marty Ketola
ah

30:07.90
Clifton Campbell
So it's a so bad. Yeah. No, cause it was not the, yeah, it's the, yeah, exactly. Every time that scene comes up in the replacements, I just hit the fucking next scene button.

30:19.40
Clifton Campbell
I don't want to watch Keanu dance to that shit. It's terrible.

30:22.26
Marty Ketola
it must be cheap to license, man.

30:23.00
Clifton Campbell
Yeah.

30:23.98
Marty Ketola
It must not cost that much.

30:24.22
Clifton Campbell
I guess, man, I guess. So anyways, but other than that, um I think it's really well done movie. I do think for the most part that um

30:36.28
Clifton Campbell
what's her name? um

30:41.31
Clifton Campbell
Why can't I remember the their captain? Her name.

30:44.76
Marty Ketola
Oh, yeah, yeah, Jessica Chastain.

30:46.57
Clifton Campbell
Jessica. Yeah. Jessica Chastain. I think she's kind of, yeah underused like you know this is a she's a really good actress who normally carries movies and she's kind of just in it for about 20 or 25 minutes now hopefully she got a massive payday and of course she this is a this thing was a massive summer blockbuster so i get why she'd take the role but at the same time wow it you know she's kind of underused but again anybody wanting to do this movie especially in matt davis part would just be like i'm on the screen by myself for 60 of this movie hell yeah you know

30:51.79
Marty Ketola
It's that kind of, hmm.

30:58.20
Marty Ketola
Yeah. Oh, sure.

31:17.36
Marty Ketola
Yep, yep.

31:20.26
Marty Ketola
I'm going to full Iron Man. And it's like, but you're Ant-Man's buddy.

31:21.94
Clifton Campbell
I'm going to full Iron Man.

31:25.30
Marty Ketola
Well.

31:26.81
Clifton Campbell
Anyway, I give it four stars.

31:27.29
Marty Ketola
three

31:28.99
Clifton Campbell
I think it's really, really well made.

31:28.86
Marty Ketola
Yeah.

31:32.48
Clifton Campbell
It's a lot of fun. And I think it's an, I think it's a modern classic. I think it's going to stick around for years.

31:35.18
Marty Ketola
Yeah, I'd be right there with you, but you know if we're doing an extra star for Joey Pants and an extra star for the Tooch, then I can take a star off for Abba.

31:46.42
Clifton Campbell
You took one and a half stars off.

31:47.77
Marty Ketola
Well, I will survive. And I will survive.

31:50.17
Clifton Campbell
Yeah. All right. right.

31:53.18
Marty Ketola
ah

31:53.61
Clifton Campbell
Well, that leads us to Moonlight.

31:55.93
Marty Ketola
Moonlight. ah Talk about all about the acting again. What is Moonlight? Because I didn't know anything about it.

32:05.02
Clifton Campbell
Moonlight 2016.

32:05.18
Marty Ketola
ah Not a damn thing. who

32:08.07
Clifton Campbell
Moonlight 2016 rated r one hour, 51 minutes. A young African-American man grapples with his identity and sexuality while experiencing the everyday struggles of childhood, adolescence, and burgeoning adulthood.

32:19.78
Clifton Campbell
directed written by barry jenkins stars marshall ollie story

32:22.55
Marty Ketola
They're not telling you stuff in that synopsis.

32:25.69
Clifton Campbell
i well it will in the storyline three time periods three time periods young adolescents mid-teen and young adult in the life of ah of black african-american i'm sorry black american chiron is presented when a child chiron lives with his single crack addicted mother paula in a crime-ridden neighborhood in miami

32:28.47
Marty Ketola
Storyline better. Yeah.

32:45.34
Clifton Campbell
Chiron is a shy, withdrawn trial, largely due to his small size and being neglected by his mother, who's more concerned about getting her fixes, and satisfying her carnal needs than taking care of him. Besides of these issues, Chiron is bullied, or because of these issues, sorry, he's bullied. The slurs are hurled at him, which he doesn't understand beyond knowing that they're meant to be hurtful.

33:02.36
Clifton Campbell
And besides besides his same-age Cuban-American friend Kevin, Charon is given what little guidance he has in life from a neighborhood drug dealer named Juan, who can see that he is neglected, and Juan's caring girlfriend Teresa, whose home acts as a sanctuary away from the bullies and away from Paula's abuse.

33:17.85
Clifton Campbell
With this childhood as a foundation, Sharon may have a predetermined path in life, one that will only be magnified in terms of its problems when he reaches these difficult teen years and when peer pressure affects what he and many of his peers do, unless he follows Juan's advice of truly making his own decisions for himself.

33:34.87
Marty Ketola
why won't they tell us this isn't a movie about gay people? Why won't they say that?

33:42.99
Clifton Campbell
I don't know.

33:43.50
Marty Ketola
That's such an important theme and they hide it. I guess maybe they're thinking people won't watch it or something, but that's,

33:49.79
Clifton Campbell
Well, there says it's dealing with his sexuality. And I think that, that, that when you, when you put in, yeah, the, the, no, the logline says,

33:53.11
Marty Ketola
Oh, it did say that. Okay. Cause I thought it was just saying he was having his issues and I'm like, well, there's a little more than that.

34:00.16
Clifton Campbell
no, the logline says he's grappling with his sexuality, which implies, you know, he's trying to figure out where he's, where he is in life with it.

34:03.13
Marty Ketola
Okay. Okay.

34:07.03
Clifton Campbell
Um,

34:07.10
Marty Ketola
So ah where to begin? Well, I guess since the movie's cut into thirds and normally I would have such an issue with the chapter one thing, you know, but I thought this movie was very well structured. I thought its pace was good because you get like 45 minutes, 45 minutes, 45 minutes approximately of each third. I don't really think they needed to put the thing, the one, two, three, because it's obvious it's a different time period. But I did like how they broke it up.

34:33.53
Marty Ketola
I thought that was good.

34:35.29
Clifton Campbell
What? You hate that stuff.

34:38.87
Marty Ketola
Well, i like I said, I don't like that chapter, Mark. They don't need to have that in there. But it was fine because it was just, you know, it wasn't as it wasn't, you know chapter one. It was like one, two, that. And i'm like, OK, fine. If you need that, at least it's subtle. But I still appreciate it the way that they broke up the different parts of the story kind of equally.

35:00.12
Marty Ketola
I thought his pacing was good, even if it was a little long. And also, I'm not a fan of shaky cam. Grab a fucking tripod. You've got to have consideration for your audience that who might be motion sick, and we might not be able to watch the movie.

35:16.02
Clifton Campbell
Well, yes, but, but I mean, there are times when you, you need the shaky cam to indicate the stress or the moment, right?

35:15.93
Marty Ketola
I don't know why they do that.

35:24.43
Marty Ketola
Hmm. Well, there's ways to do it that don't make me want to throw up.

35:26.28
Clifton Campbell
You know, um, I, I, I hear, I hear you about your, I hear you about your, yeah.

35:28.41
Marty Ketola
I mean it's not Blair Witch Project, but there's some parts in the beginning, especially where I'm just like, oh my God, I had to look away from the screen.

35:32.43
Clifton Campbell
Um, I,

35:34.69
Marty Ketola
Just like, please stop spinning. Stop. It's like that scene in Carrie where they're just spinning around at the problem.

35:40.93
Clifton Campbell
I,

35:41.74
Marty Ketola
i'm like, oh my God, no.

35:43.64
Clifton Campbell
You didn't have a problem with the spinning in straight time? That's weird. Because that...

35:47.03
Marty Ketola
Straight Time.

35:48.44
Clifton Campbell
yeah No, the...

35:48.25
Marty Ketola
The Dolly Parton movie?

35:50.51
Clifton Campbell
ah are Sorry, running time, right? The... That's weird.

35:52.31
Marty Ketola
Yeah, because that one, it's it's not the same.

35:56.50
Clifton Campbell
Okay.

35:57.21
Marty Ketola
It's, yeah hey, I don't know what, if it it's not ah it's not a personal preference, is does it sit trigger the motion sick or not?

35:57.53
Clifton Campbell
Okay. Straight time with donald park with... No, straight time with Dustin Hoffman, dude. Okay?

36:07.77
Clifton Campbell
I got you.

36:07.58
Marty Ketola
And that one didn't for some reason.

36:09.55
Clifton Campbell
Like a certain sequence of alliance... Triggering a fitters.

36:11.86
Marty Ketola
Yeah.

36:12.53
Clifton Campbell
Okay. All right. Gotcha. um So for me, that, do you remember that I found this kind of a weird movie? Cause it threw me like, like I knew nothing about it.

36:21.14
Marty Ketola
It is a weird movie.

36:23.94
Clifton Campbell
Like you, ah the boy being chased at the very beginning that ends with Marsha, Marsha Ali ripping down the plywood.

36:24.12
Marty Ketola
Mm-hmm.

36:32.18
Clifton Campbell
That's a great scene.

36:33.35
Marty Ketola
Mm-hmm.

36:34.17
Clifton Campbell
And, but it almost feels like a flashback. It felt like, it almost felt like Mahershala breaking in on himself, right.

36:37.89
Marty Ketola
Mm-hmm.

36:41.11
Clifton Campbell
And saving himself.

36:41.65
Marty Ketola
Mm-hmm.

36:42.19
Clifton Campbell
I felt like it was metaphoric.

36:43.99
Marty Ketola
Well, that's true in a way, because he kind of turned into him.

36:44.47
Clifton Campbell
ah And then it and it it it is, it and he does, but I thought there was like, I really thought that this was going to be about Mahershala being young and then middle and then so on.

36:54.07
Marty Ketola
Yeah. Yeah.

36:56.13
Clifton Campbell
And it wasn't, he's fucking, he's in this movie for 15 minutes and then he's gone.

36:56.86
Marty Ketola
No.

36:59.75
Marty Ketola
He's the be beginning, and then he's gone. And he's the best part of the movie, too.

37:02.28
Clifton Campbell
Mm-hmm. He's the best part of the movie. He's the best part of the movie.

37:05.94
Marty Ketola
he's It's like Green Book where Viggo disappeared. He disappears into the character of Juan.

37:11.57
Clifton Campbell
He's so good.

37:12.76
Marty Ketola
I almost didn't even know was him.

37:12.99
Clifton Campbell
He's so...

37:14.40
Marty Ketola
He's so different than his character of Don when he's playing Juan. Wait a minute.

37:19.70
Clifton Campbell
No kidding.

37:19.94
Marty Ketola
Don Juan.

37:20.46
Clifton Campbell
He's... The guy's a world-class...

37:20.72
Marty Ketola
Yeah, yeah.

37:22.78
Clifton Campbell
exactly

37:25.69
Clifton Campbell
ah He's a world-class actor, man.

37:27.38
Marty Ketola
yeah yeah

37:28.11
Clifton Campbell
he's so he's a he i would I would gladly cast him in anything that I was making in a heartbeat for damn near any role he wanted to play.

37:33.37
Marty Ketola
Yeah.

37:37.05
Marty Ketola
But it's kind of rival-esque where you think, is this the like a flash?

37:37.54
Clifton Campbell
He's awesome.

37:41.38
Marty Ketola
Is he looking back on his life?

37:43.32
Clifton Campbell
but so That's what I meant. That's what I meant.

37:44.15
Marty Ketola
Yeah.

37:44.80
Clifton Campbell
it Yeah. Yeah. And so, but then we realized, oh no, this is this little boy. And you know, my, my, my favorite moment in the movie. And of course it carries that theme throughout the the film is in the moonlight, all, all black boys look blue.

37:57.88
Marty Ketola
Mm-hmm.

37:58.95
Clifton Campbell
Oh, that's beautiful.

38:00.66
Marty Ketola
Oh, there's some great dialogue, like what was the line about the I cry so much, I'm going to turn into the drop and go into the ocean or whatever that was.

38:07.16
Clifton Campbell
Yep.

38:08.22
Marty Ketola
Yeah.

38:08.98
Clifton Campbell
Yeah. Yeah.

38:11.32
Marty Ketola
ah Yeah. And then it's even more when you get to the second part and you find out that Juan died somehow. And it's just like it just takes the wind out of you because he's such a strong character.

38:18.39
Clifton Campbell
yeah

38:26.42
Marty Ketola
You know, the movie was a and in a way very reminiscent of Boyhood. Even though they didn't spend 12 years to make it, they did manage to convey the passage of time very well, like how that the Boyhood movie did too.

38:40.76
Clifton Campbell
Yeah, I completely agree with you. I haven't seen Boyhood. So um that will probably I'll probably end up watching that here relatively soon.

38:45.05
Marty Ketola
Okay.

38:49.61
Clifton Campbell
But i I understand what it is and what it did. And so and I kind of agree.

38:53.22
Marty Ketola
Mm-hmm.

38:54.49
Clifton Campbell
This is um it also reminds me of like. a um I wanted to say like a Rashomon, but it's not because it's not told from different perspectives, but it is these three different slices of the same person's life that I really enjoyed.

39:03.67
Marty Ketola
Mm-hmm.

39:08.72
Clifton Campbell
Yeah.

39:08.95
Marty Ketola
Mm-hmm. But who would ever thought that somebody would mix Boys in the Hood and Brokeback Mountain together, but they did.

39:15.44
Clifton Campbell
It's I feel and here's the thing.

39:16.21
Marty Ketola
They somehow did. Right.

39:18.46
Clifton Campbell
I have a note that I feel like I've seen this theme in this movie before. It wasn't a surprise to me. I wasn't like, oh, this is a brilliant thematic leap as a you know filmmaker or director. I went, yeah, I'm pretty sure I've seen something like this before, but I don't think I've seen it this well done.

39:35.26
Marty Ketola
Yeah.

39:35.61
Clifton Campbell
where there's ah there's an artistry and ah and ah and a, that like we just talked about, the dialogue and the and some just, my God, dude, some of the lighting in it is so much like La La Land, where it's just like, Jesus Christ, is this the same cinematographer?

39:47.32
Marty Ketola
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.

39:51.68
Clifton Campbell
Because good Lord.

39:53.41
Marty Ketola
Mm-hmm.

39:54.62
Clifton Campbell
And while I still think La La Land should have won because it's just sheer, it it's just sheer balls of going for it.

39:58.84
Marty Ketola
Yeah.

40:01.40
Marty Ketola
But this is the movie they give the Oscar to, right?

40:01.91
Clifton Campbell
But this this is... and And I understand why the Oscars give why the Oscar wants to give Oscars to movies like this.

40:05.75
Marty Ketola
her

40:09.80
Clifton Campbell
I really do. It's well done. It's well made. um You know, at one point in the early beginning of this, i I'm like, please don't let this please don't let this boy being groomed.

40:21.53
Clifton Campbell
right? By this drug dealer, right?

40:22.74
Marty Ketola
Oh, yeah.

40:23.14
Clifton Campbell
Cause it felt a little, it felt in the beginning, a little kind of weird that way.

40:23.30
Marty Ketola
no

40:27.46
Clifton Campbell
And then I realized that's just the paranoia of modern times. Right.

40:31.50
Marty Ketola
Mm-hmm.

40:32.04
Clifton Campbell
Whereas, but, but like back then it would have was, yeah, it's, it's just feeding into everything, but yeah.

40:33.98
Marty Ketola
Well, you think that's what's going to happen, and then it doesn't, is Oak.

40:39.13
Marty Ketola
it becomes the mentor to him.

40:41.14
Clifton Campbell
listen

40:40.97
Marty Ketola
I'm glad we watched American fiction before this because there's so many tropes, especially in the first part of this. And it's like, is that what this is almost reactionary to?

40:51.15
Clifton Campbell
It's,

40:51.66
Marty Ketola
But yet, like you said, I'm not saying those stories shouldn't be told. And this is a version of telling it very well, but it's not quite the book fuck, but there are some elements in there.

40:56.47
Clifton Campbell
Right. Right.

41:01.23
Clifton Campbell
It's...

41:02.58
Marty Ketola
You got your cracked out mama and you know, a lot of these things, but it does, it does really good things with it though.

41:04.79
Clifton Campbell
Yeah. and and But it doesn't... But it also doesn't... They don't...

41:11.10
Marty Ketola
They flip it.

41:12.38
Clifton Campbell
They flip it and they're also... not dwelling in it. Right. Like it's not like precious where it's just, it's not like precious where it's just this poor victim who's being screamed at and can't do anything with her life and shit.

41:16.57
Marty Ketola
Yeah, yeah. It's just to set it up, yeah.

41:22.87
Marty Ketola
yeah

41:24.54
Clifton Campbell
And like, yeah, he comes home and he has to deal with his mom at certain points, but that's maybe five to 10 minutes of the movie, you know, just, just to set the impact of what his home life is like.

41:31.06
Marty Ketola
Yeah.

41:35.48
Clifton Campbell
Right.

41:35.39
Marty Ketola
But like you said, is it going to be this? i hope not.

41:37.98
Clifton Campbell
Yeah, exactly.

41:38.21
Marty Ketola
And then it's not. And you're going, oh, thank you.

41:39.73
Clifton Campbell
Yeah. Well, and that's,

41:40.47
Marty Ketola
Thank you for not being that. Yeah.

41:42.39
Clifton Campbell
one of my yeah One of my notes is this movie. Just when I think it wanders into being tried or formulaic, it digs deep and finds true emotion. like Like you were saying, you've got all these kind of things that are are in these sort of boys in the hood type of movies and that type of thing.

41:57.01
Clifton Campbell
But it goes a step further and then finds that true emotion. When he fucking goes into that school and just grabs that chair and busts that dude upside the fucking head, I was just like...

42:03.06
Marty Ketola
Yeah. ha Yeah.

42:06.58
Clifton Campbell
Damn. That was the moment where he decided he was not going to be that victim anymore. Right?

42:10.36
Marty Ketola
Right.

42:10.83
Clifton Campbell
Like it's over. You're going to kill me or I'm going to kill you.

42:12.35
Marty Ketola
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.

42:14.58
Clifton Campbell
And you could see it. I mean, they had to drag him away from that kid.

42:17.88
Marty Ketola
Mm-hmm. That teacher or the nurse. or or And you'll be all, and he's like, you don't understand anything.

42:23.29
Clifton Campbell
You don't get shit. You don't understand anything.

42:24.50
Marty Ketola
you know. Mm-hmm. And he tunes out while she's babbling.

42:27.35
Clifton Campbell
We live in two separate fucking worlds. Yeah.

42:29.34
Marty Ketola
Yeah. Mm-hmm. Yeah, that's that's that's some powerful stuff. Yeah.

42:35.61
Clifton Campbell
Yeah. yeah

42:39.16
Marty Ketola
I also like that it's very refreshing that it has a positive look on pot and a negative look on tweaking. It shows the difference from so many movies like to lump all drugs together as one thing.

42:52.50
Marty Ketola
This movie shows the difference and you think, oh, he's going to get him high for the first time. And he's like, man, I, my mom's had stuff all around for, like, oh, he's used to this, you know? And it's like, that's another thing where you think it's going to go one way and then it goes another, you know?

43:06.81
Clifton Campbell
So one of the things that I one of the questions that I wasn't answered for me and maybe I missed it was why the fuck does Mahershala Ali care?

43:17.56
Clifton Campbell
Right. Other than the possible metaphor at the beginning of the movie where he's kind of saving himself, but he's not because he's not a gay kid. Why does he care? You know, did he have like, ah did he have a gay brother at one point?

43:25.99
Marty Ketola
He's just,

43:28.69
Clifton Campbell
Like, you know, what, what does he care about?

43:29.82
Marty Ketola
well, it's, I think,

43:31.47
Clifton Campbell
Another, another hood kid that's out there on the streets. He's, you know, he's a gangbanger. He's got a good life. He's got a, you know, ye what, why this kid, why does he care that the movie just didn't answer that for me?

43:42.65
Marty Ketola
Well, it's in that line about the black boys are blue in the moonlight when he used to be and you know running in Cuba and up to no good, and that woman stopped him, and and then he had a bit of a change, right?

43:57.11
Marty Ketola
And I think he sees this kid, and he's trying to – he realizes this kid has nobody, and there's something in him that he realizes.

43:58.42
Clifton Campbell
You think that's the, okay. Maybe I did just didn't put that together. Okay.

44:04.35
Marty Ketola
He's like, oh, you're my kid's dad now? And he's just like, I'm just trying to help.

44:06.94
Clifton Campbell
Yeah. I, I wish there'd been a, I wish they dug on that just a touch more.

44:08.55
Marty Ketola
Mm-hmm. you know

44:11.70
Marty Ketola
here

44:12.45
Clifton Campbell
I wanted just a little bit more from Mahershala to that kid or to even Janelle Monae, who is so fucking gorgeous in this movie in general, just a gorgeous woman.

44:23.46
Clifton Campbell
But in that, I wish she'd had a little bit more to do and it would have been great to see a scene between the two of them where she asks him why he cares or they talk about this kid, you know, maybe there wasn't, they cut it out.

44:28.34
Marty Ketola
him Yeah. And maybe there was something they sniffed or, you know.

44:33.53
Clifton Campbell
Yeah. But good point. Yeah. Um,

44:35.70
Marty Ketola
It's funny how it does relate to Green Book because the character in that movie was the gay black man as well. And so you see that struggle happen again in a different in a different site.

44:46.73
Clifton Campbell
That's interesting. Yeah.

44:48.28
Marty Ketola
And as we've always heard, that being gay in the black community apparently is not easy. And it's not well accepted is what I've always heard.

44:58.58
Clifton Campbell
No, it's it's not. it's It's not any. It's a yeah probably. Yeah, probably pretty bad, honestly, from what I've heard. I don't know. I haven't lived that experience, so I won't i won't speak to it.

45:06.87
Marty Ketola
Right? That guy couldn't die.

45:08.03
Clifton Campbell
but i i from what i from what i yeah But from what I've read, it ain't easy.

45:08.75
Marty Ketola
A white guy.

45:12.49
Clifton Campbell
you know

45:12.44
Marty Ketola
No. I don't think this movie understands women very much. Those characters are kind of underwritten, but that's not really what this movie's about.

45:21.69
Clifton Campbell
That's not really what that movie's about, yeah. um And here's what I'll say. um i really, truly despise his mother. I don't, I don't buy the whole, Oh, I'm clean and sober.

45:32.91
Clifton Campbell
And now I'm your, I get to tell you what to do with your life.

45:34.80
Marty Ketola
That's why he was still holding all because he's like, no, you know, I'm glad you're trying to do something, but no, you know, it's been too much.

45:37.05
Clifton Campbell
You know? Yeah. And money. Yeah. And, and he, and he should let go. He should let go and he should try to be his own person and so on. Right.

45:47.93
Clifton Campbell
I, I just, I don't hate her, but I, I just, I, I hate this idea that, that somehow that you didn't do your job as a parent. Then later on in life, you want to have a say in your child's thing.

45:59.35
Marty Ketola
Yeah. And I was like, no, it's too late.

46:00.28
Clifton Campbell
Like, fuck off. You fuck off.

46:02.26
Marty Ketola
I'm a, I'm a grown ass man.

46:03.46
Clifton Campbell
I'm a grown ass man.

46:04.34
Marty Ketola
I don't even live here anymore.

46:04.89
Clifton Campbell
Yep. ye Yep.

46:06.86
Marty Ketola
I'm out trapping, which I had to look up what that slang meant.

46:09.08
Clifton Campbell
Trapping.

46:10.44
Marty Ketola
And it just meant, you know, doing all that, all that stuff.

46:12.98
Clifton Campbell
doing doing all that drug business.

46:14.87
Marty Ketola
Yeah. Mm hmm.

46:17.02
Clifton Campbell
ah The Anytime anybody, here's what I'll say to anyone who is ever in a group with a bunch of people stomped on somebody after they've gone down in a fight, you're literally just shit on someone's shoe.

46:31.91
Clifton Campbell
I would like you to know that personally.

46:33.02
Marty Ketola
aye

46:33.67
Clifton Campbell
It's a shit thing to do. um if two people want to fight, it's that's awful.

46:36.06
Marty Ketola
Oh, yes. hate crime Hate crime happens in the middle of that movie. Yeah.

46:39.26
Clifton Campbell
Two people want to fight, stand back, let them handle a business or whatever and keep them from killing each other for God's sake. But six people in one is, that's coward time.

46:48.54
Marty Ketola
hu

46:50.36
Clifton Campbell
Her name, Aphrodisia, she only come out at night.

46:50.55
Marty Ketola
Yeah.

46:54.17
Marty Ketola
Yeah. it's it's It's a little... almost tropey in ways, but they present you something you haven't seen before where it's like it's heartbreaking that the person that he's in love with now has to beat him up, which calls the catalyst to him break the chair, goes to juvie, and yet somehow later in life they manage to reconnect.

47:02.02
Clifton Campbell
That's what I'm saying. It digs deep suddenly.

47:07.48
Clifton Campbell
Beat him. Yep. Yep. Yep.

47:16.89
Clifton Campbell
The worst part of that for me is the is the at the end where he looks at him and says, you're the only man who's ever touched me. And I thought, good fucking God, this guy has lived the complete life of loneliness.

47:22.34
Marty Ketola
Mm-hmm.

47:27.11
Marty Ketola
Mm-hmm.

47:27.86
Clifton Campbell
One moment. Other than that, he's he's done nothing but you'll just live.

47:28.98
Marty Ketola
Yeah.

47:31.42
Clifton Campbell
a I mean, what is what do you do? You go home, you watch movies, play video games, go to sleep. You know, you don't have anybody that you talk to. You don't have anybody that you're with. You know, that's awful.

47:38.63
Marty Ketola
Mm-hmm.

47:41.47
Marty Ketola
Mm-hmm. And yet one of the reviews I read, because I sometimes like to see, okay, who's hating on this?

47:47.13
Clifton Campbell
You do. You do.

47:48.66
Marty Ketola
And the people are hating on it just don't want to see LGBTQ film.

47:52.95
Clifton Campbell
Yeah, absolutely. then Yeah, yeah.

47:54.10
Marty Ketola
But there was one interesting review that was a half star that said something like, nothing that the last 20 years of gay black cinema hasn't already shown me.

47:54.80
Clifton Campbell
It's something you get crawler. Mm-hmm.

48:04.34
Marty Ketola
And I went, oh, is this mainstream once again finally doing a version of something that's already existed in indie film? It's a good thing because, you know, people aren't being seen this, you know, usually.

48:17.53
Clifton Campbell
this is This is what I'm saying.

48:17.65
Marty Ketola
Mm-hmm.

48:18.93
Clifton Campbell
It's not something I don't find this groundbreaking. I find it very well handled and well made.

48:23.43
Marty Ketola
It's just well made. Yeah.

48:25.50
Clifton Campbell
And i but I mean, it's not pushing any boundaries. It's it's it's um it's again really well made. It's a character study.

48:33.98
Marty Ketola
Yeah.

48:34.49
Clifton Campbell
you know And it's a really well done character study. It just happens to be about a black guy who's a drug dealer.

48:37.24
Marty Ketola
Mm hmm.

48:39.86
Marty Ketola
Mm hmm.

48:40.41
Clifton Campbell
It could be anything. you know There's tons of character studies out there.

48:43.18
Marty Ketola
And.

48:44.75
Clifton Campbell
And it's it's just a really well made one.

48:44.79
Marty Ketola
And. her And once again, the best part is the acting, especially Mahershala in the beginning, just acting the shit out of it.

48:47.71
Clifton Campbell
Emotional as fuck. Uh huh.

48:55.22
Marty Ketola
It's just like, oh, I do wish he was in more of the movie, but it's more poignant that it's like, oh, because if he was, maybe this, you know, the kid wouldn't have had the same path, but he didn't have that mentor anymore.

49:00.82
Clifton Campbell
It's... Kid wouldn't do it. Yeah. Yeah. He would have stopped that kid. He probably would have stopped that kid going back into that school and with that chair.

49:07.14
Marty Ketola
Yeah.

49:10.14
Clifton Campbell
Or maybe he wouldn't have Who knows?

49:11.35
Marty Ketola
Yeah, who knows?

49:11.96
Clifton Campbell
i don't know.

49:12.07
Marty Ketola
Right? Could have ended up the same way. Yeah.

49:15.26
Clifton Campbell
I have, you know, I have a note that says, you know, the guilt, the unwanted and unfair guilt that this kid lives with is, is just that his mother heaps upon him is just not, you know it's not fair.

49:30.26
Clifton Campbell
And so well illustrated in the film. And again, i love the color of the movie. I don't think I've ever seen a film where black people look so gorgeous on film ever.

49:42.00
Marty Ketola
That's true. Because sometimes we've seen some movies where it's like they don't know how to light it and it's it's wrong.

49:45.98
Clifton Campbell
They don't. Yeah. These, these, this was just so richly lit.

49:47.36
Marty Ketola
But here the lighting is perfect for it. Yeah.

49:51.67
Clifton Campbell
Everybody looks gorgeous. and Everybody, even from, even the kid who's kicking the shit out of this kid looks great. Everybody's just perfectly lit makeup. Really, really nice. Really, really nice.

50:09.74
Clifton Campbell
let's see. it it does at points kind of, I feel like it loses its pace at times at the end, re the reconciliation with the guy is a little slow, but, but I also understand that if you rush it, it feels artificial.

50:25.86
Marty Ketola
Yeah.

50:26.33
Clifton Campbell
You need, you need to give it space to breathe.

50:28.82
Marty Ketola
Mm-hmm.

50:29.27
Clifton Campbell
Um,

50:29.66
Marty Ketola
Yeah, they if they had rushed through that, that would have felt weird, too.

50:31.77
Clifton Campbell
ah Yeah, totally, totally, totally.

50:32.22
Marty Ketola
Yeah.

50:33.74
Clifton Campbell
But at that point in the film, it's it's like, okay, i'm ah I'm a little, I'm ready. You know, like this is this is our forty hour 40, hour 50, I'm ready to kind of have it end.

50:39.58
Marty Ketola
Mm-hmm.

50:42.46
Clifton Campbell
um But I also wouldn't say, like I couldn't point to anything immediately and say, cut that out of the film.

50:48.05
Marty Ketola
It's true. And then you realize, oh, it's not even two hours. It's under. Yet it does still feel like it overstays its welcome a little bit, but...

50:55.85
Clifton Campbell
Mm-hmm.

50:59.16
Clifton Campbell
A little bit. That's what I'm trying to say. Yeah. But but I also can't say i can't pinpoint where it does that, you know?

51:02.97
Marty Ketola
Yeah. what What could you cut? Yeah.

51:05.46
Clifton Campbell
Yeah, because it's again, it's really pretty well made. I think possibly you could tighten up the beginning a little bit, maybe the middle here and there just but it wouldn't it would be like a series of small cuts. It wouldn't be a whole scene.

51:16.95
Marty Ketola
Yeah.

51:17.41
Clifton Campbell
Yeah.

51:19.74
Marty Ketola
Because it's got that equal... length for each part of his life. Like Boyhood was shot over like 12 years in 12 minute chunks.

51:29.11
Clifton Campbell
Right.

51:31.35
Marty Ketola
So you get 12 minutes, 12 minutes, 12 minutes and on and on.

51:31.58
Clifton Campbell
Right.

51:34.59
Marty Ketola
And this is kind of like, Oh, 45, 45, 45. And I really appreciated the passage of time. Well,

51:46.10
Marty Ketola
it's It's hard to do that artificially. That's why i like Boyhood so much, because that really is the past. It's happening in the past. You're not setting up make to make it look like that's the time they shot it during. And this movie is kind of eerily timeless in a way, like is the beginning the 80s, the ninety s the now?

52:05.27
Marty Ketola
They stay away from a lot of that stuff, right?

52:09.34
Clifton Campbell
Yep.

52:09.75
Marty Ketola
I mean, what year did they have cell phones in the first part of the movie?

52:10.62
Clifton Campbell
Yep.

52:14.04
Marty Ketola
Because I know he has a cell phone at the end, but...

52:17.85
Clifton Campbell
I don't know, but I mean, one of the great things about that film is that the way that it's shot, it doesn't really give you it doesn't doesn't really give you a lot of time to worry about that.

52:29.21
Marty Ketola
Yeah, that's not something else.

52:29.83
Clifton Campbell
you're so you're so You're so busy with the film and so busy with the characters that you're not really worried or you're not looking going, is that a fucking ColecoVision or not? you know

52:38.68
Marty Ketola
Yeah, it's like these people on...

52:40.39
Clifton Campbell
And the film's not providing any of that. The film's pulling all that away to say, look, it's just a generic background.

52:42.97
Marty Ketola
Yeah.

52:47.02
Clifton Campbell
This is just a tenement row house where he lives in a Section 8 housing with rows of them.

52:48.44
Marty Ketola
Mm-hmm.

52:53.50
Marty Ketola
Exactly. It's just like these people on social media who I'm guessing have just discovered Friday the Thirteen Youth movies and are like, why didn't Jason smash the window instead of doing the thing? thats Because that's... You're thinking too hard.

53:08.15
Marty Ketola
ah

53:08.62
Clifton Campbell
Yeah, you're thinking way too hard.

53:10.07
Marty Ketola
You can't... You can't rewrite the movie.

53:14.49
Clifton Campbell
No, you're thinking way too fucking hard on that shit.

53:16.57
Marty Ketola
Why did Jason stab the pitchfork through the top when he could have just broke through the window? Because the script...

53:22.37
Clifton Campbell
Right?

53:23.68
Marty Ketola
Because it's scarier that way? I don't know. That's what you don't worry about if it's a ColecoVision or if he has a square TV because they're in poverty, right?

53:33.02
Clifton Campbell
right

53:39.00
Marty Ketola
But yeah, I started this movie, I'm like, to be like some gangbanger thing, right? Boy, did it take a turn. it But it keeps you guessing, so...

53:46.81
Clifton Campbell
Yeah, I I I knew it was about a kid grappling with his sexuality. I just didn't expect it to be what it was.

53:55.89
Marty Ketola
Mm-hmm.

53:56.86
Clifton Campbell
And again, you know, it's it's it's really well made. think Barry Jenkins wrote and directed a really good film.

54:01.59
Marty Ketola
Mm-hmm.

54:05.24
Clifton Campbell
I these

54:06.36
Marty Ketola
Yeah, I don't think I've seen anything else he's done. Mm-hmm.

54:09.21
Clifton Campbell
and Me either. But these types of things can go wrong pretty quickly if you don't if you don't handle that type of subject matter properly. And and he he does ah he does a very, very good job with it.

54:19.22
Marty Ketola
Yeah.

54:23.22
Marty Ketola
And don't watch this movie when you're having emotional issues or or detoxing or or maybe maybe maybe do.

54:28.86
Clifton Campbell
Yeah, no, I wouldn't do that.

54:33.08
Marty Ketola
maybe Maybe it helped. I don't know.

54:38.90
Clifton Campbell
Oh, my goodness. You got any other notes on it?

54:40.82
Marty Ketola
And if I had watched The Martian first, then I would have had to watch Moonlight while was recovering. Maybe that would have been worse.

54:48.21
Clifton Campbell
That's true.

54:48.82
Marty Ketola
so No, I don't have any more notes on it.

54:52.30
Clifton Campbell
Yeah.

54:52.60
Marty Ketola
I did enjoy it. I don't think I need to watch it again.

54:56.78
Clifton Campbell
It's not something I'm going to watch again, either.

54:58.07
Marty Ketola
Because you really get a lot out of it the first time. But I also feel like if I did watch it again, maybe I might pick up some more subtext. Maybe there might be a thing of why Juan wants to care for the kid that I didn't catch because I was just trying to follow the story first time, perhaps, or...

55:12.54
Clifton Campbell
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. It's possible. Yeah, I can see that.

55:17.59
Clifton Campbell
um

55:21.72
Clifton Campbell
Yeah. What do you give it then?

55:23.18
Marty Ketola
I'm to three and a half.

55:25.08
Clifton Campbell
Three and a half? Okay. I'm going to go four again.

55:26.94
Marty Ketola
hu

55:27.83
Clifton Campbell
I feel like this and the Martian are kind of ah on the same level, but just completely polar opposite ends of the spectrum.

55:32.09
Marty Ketola
Yeah. And yet they're both about being isolated in different ways.

55:36.73
Clifton Campbell
think that's the truth. That's an interesting...

55:37.46
Marty Ketola
Yeah.

55:38.07
Clifton Campbell
now Hey, there's your connection.

55:39.38
Marty Ketola
Yeah. It's, you know, the Martian and the moonlight.

55:41.66
Clifton Campbell
Yeah. Yeah. One is self isolation and one is imposed isolation. Interesting.

55:47.96
Marty Ketola
Yeah. Yeah.

55:48.57
Clifton Campbell
Interesting. That's an interesting take, man.

55:50.51
Marty Ketola
It's so weird how these things line up like that sometimes.

55:51.42
Clifton Campbell
I like that.

55:54.55
Marty Ketola
ah

55:56.25
Clifton Campbell
Four stars. All right. Well, four stars it is, man.

55:58.26
Marty Ketola
All right. So, wow. That's another one done there. Yeah,

56:03.67
Clifton Campbell
are we announcing Are we announcing our next picks for this one?

56:05.72
Marty Ketola
yeah well we'll give each other our next no guest episode pick.

56:11.41
Clifton Campbell
OK, I was looking for my phone and here it is because I have your list on there. Do you know which one you want from going go first?

56:17.98
Marty Ketola
Let me see here real quick. Doing the thing. And if this one comes out then that means next week is a guest and a guest and a guest and a guest.

56:24.19
Clifton Campbell
I'm going to cut. I'm going to cut. I'm going cut all this out anyways.

56:28.78
Marty Ketola
He always says that, but he never does.

56:31.43
Clifton Campbell
I'm going to cut all this out anyways.

56:32.18
Marty Ketola
And then we'll be back in about three weeks with this episode that we're about to announce now. Okay. Okay.

56:44.05
Clifton Campbell
Uh-huh.

56:46.40
Marty Ketola
me look at this here. is this?

56:48.35
Clifton Campbell
Try and look at it.

56:49.02
Marty Ketola
Oh, you want to, you want an old one or a new one?

56:49.43
Clifton Campbell
What is it?

56:54.82
Clifton Campbell
I want a new one.

56:56.66
Marty Ketola
Do you want one that has more to do with this movie or more to do with an older movie?

56:59.19
Clifton Campbell
let's just Just pick one.

57:04.12
Marty Ketola
Well, it's, ah it's a hard call here. Which one do we do? ah you know what? Boyhood.

57:11.78
Clifton Campbell
Boy, I figured as much.

57:13.11
Marty Ketola
Why not? It's a good tee up for it.

57:13.88
Clifton Campbell
okay

57:14.79
Marty Ketola
Now let's do that one.

57:15.58
Clifton Campbell
Yeah.

57:16.15
Marty Ketola
Yeah.

57:17.08
Clifton Campbell
Well then it, in that case, uh, I'm going to give you, um the companion film to this and I'll give you project Hail Mary.

57:16.94
Marty Ketola
We'll go back to some link later here.

57:29.63
Marty Ketola
Oh, see, there we go. Good. Doing some brand new releases here.

57:35.42
Clifton Campbell
Yeah. Yeah. And I think, I think after that, if if you ask me again, I'll be like, yeah, throw some of that old stuff at me. I think I've, we've been doing a new stuff.

57:40.86
Marty Ketola
i then we bounce it up cause I want to be able to give you some option.

57:42.38
Clifton Campbell
Yeah. Bouncing around. Sure.

57:43.34
Marty Ketola
you know cause i want You'd be like oh i wanted to new then i'm like, I always have so many choices.

57:44.34
Clifton Campbell
Sure.

57:48.66
Marty Ketola
that it's like We can go see which way we go here with this. ah if you They're putting Boyhood back in the theaters this year briefly, which is strange. When you watch it, I know it's a long movie.

58:00.60
Marty Ketola
If you can, try to watch it as much in one continuous stretch. I think it's more and impactful if you don't break it up because the whole point is the going to the next.

58:10.49
Clifton Campbell
I don't don't do that. Yeah.

58:12.98
Marty Ketola
Because I know sometimes a long movie, you have to pause it and stuff.

58:13.53
Clifton Campbell
The only time I do that is if it's a... yeah if it's I broke The Martian up because I've seen it 15 times. But if it's a brand new movie, i always watch it from beginning in because i don't I don't want to do that.

58:19.77
Marty Ketola
Oh, yeah, yeah.

58:23.31
Clifton Campbell
So I'll watch definitely watch from beginning in. You got it.

58:24.79
Marty Ketola
because it really it's i mean Because for me, anyway, you get to the end of all that and it's just like, whoa. But some people don't like that movie, so it'll be fun to discuss those two.

58:37.22
Clifton Campbell
Yep.

58:38.15
Marty Ketola
I've been keeping that in my back pocket for a long time.

58:39.29
Clifton Campbell
But that'll... that'll be at a That'll be in a while though, because we've got guests coming up, right?

58:41.50
Marty Ketola
Boyhood.

58:44.22
Marty Ketola
Yeah, that's almost a month from now because we got a bunch of cool guest shit coming up.

58:47.03
Clifton Campbell
yeah Yeah. That's right, people.

58:49.91
Marty Ketola
Our next episode is another alliterative, right?

58:51.06
Clifton Campbell
Strap in.

58:53.07
Marty Ketola
Where both movies start with the letter B. So tune in next week for that.

58:55.90
Clifton Campbell
That'll be fun. You want to get out of here on a quote?

59:01.14
Marty Ketola
You have terrible taste in music. And that's when I just applaud it, man. I'm like, thank you. when You understand yourself. Maybe I'll give it another star on the recap, right?

59:12.91
Clifton Campbell
Ah, fuck you, Mars.

59:17.08
Clifton Campbell
later in

59:17.62
Marty Ketola
Later.
