Can You Cure Herpes?

Welcome to the Friday mini episode of America’s number one sex podcast Dr. Sex Fairy. I am Dr. Kanwal Bawa, America’s favorite sex doctor and I am here to transform your life.  Today we are going to talk about Herpes. Make sure you share this episode with at least 10 friends because this is a topic that is relevant to all of us.

After all, up to 80% of American adults are infected with Herpes. Chances are that you either have it, or that you are with someone who has it, or will be with someone who has it. It is often seen as a sexually transmitted disease. It can certainly be transmitted through anal, oral or genital sex, but it can also be transmitted by kissing, or touching someone’s Herpes lesion and then touching a mucous membrane on your own body.

Maybe you touched a herpes lesion and then picked your nose. Maybe you shared lip balm with someone. It could be that simple. Herpes is a virus, and there are two main types: HSV-1and HSV-2. People often think that HSV-1 is only in the mouth or nose, and that HSV-2 is the one seen in genitals. That is completely incorrect. Either type of herpes can infect either place. You can have HSV-2 on your lips, and you can have HSV-1 on your genitals.

The answer you are waiting for is whether or not you can get rid of Herpes. Unfortunately, you can treat it with antiviral medications like Valcyclovir (which commonly known as Valtrex) or Acyclovir, but you cannot cure it. If you have frequent Herpes outbreaks, you can go on daily medication for it. If you get it only occasionally, you can go on a short burst of treatment when you do get it. Remember, the sooner you take this antiviral medication, the better it will work. Also remember, you can be shedding the virus without even having an outbreak.

I am going to do an entire episode about the most common sexually transmitted infections and whether or not you can cure them. Make sure you subscribe to my podcast so that you don't miss that important episode.

I will leave you with this thought: While I am all for you having a good time, don't forget that while your relationship or one night stand may not last, Herpes is forever.

Until next time.
