Cain, the First Blade & the Mark of Cain Explained

It's 1863, Confederate demons are terrified, and a man with a jawbone and a leather jacket just kicked in a door. That's our cold open, and we are already locked in.

Dean and Crowley hit the road together as the world's least likely hunting duo, tracking down the First Blade, the only weapon that can kill Abaddon. The trail leads them to a crotchety hunter named Tara (who shares way too much information about John Winchester) and eventually to a very charming beekeeper (who turns out to be the father of murder himself). Cain is retired, unbothered, and shucking corn while demons get their asses handed to them in the next room. Berly and LA are smitten, and they are not hiding it.

Back at the bunker, Sam and Castiel are working on extracting the last traces of Gadreel's grace, and somehow a peanut butter and jelly sandwich becomes the emotional thesis statement of the episode.

The lore this week covers the real biblical Cain: the first murder, the mark, the curse, and how the world's original problem child accidentally kickstarted urban civilization and the music industry. It tracks.

Devastated after Kevin's death, Dean vows to hunt down the angel that kidnapped his brother and murdered Crowley's favorite prophet. Speaking of Crowley, he has a very particular set of skills that Castiel suggests they use to separate Sam's consciousness from Gadril. Gadril.

Firstborn son episode opens up. It's Missouri. We're in Missouri and it's 1863. We see Jasper Springs. Oh, Jasper. We're in Jasper Springs. Oh, wait, we're in it. This says Mississippi. I thought it said Missouri. Who's right? This or the TV? I don't know. But they were Confederate soldiers. They are scared of something. And then they're blinking their black eyes. One of them comes in and he's like, he's coming. And then he came, and then I was coming. My hot damn. He kicked in that door. I don't know what I was expecting, but it wasn't that.

It was real nice. It was real nice. Well, then he's like smiting them, but it's kind of pink red, like this dark magenta. I liked the different colors. I'm I'm liking that they're playing with the colors and they aren't doing the same for everybody. Yeah. He fucks everybody up in that cabin, I'm assuming. And he's making his way to his back room and he has this weird like skull fracture piece that he's carrying. It's like a big jawbone. Yeah. We find out what that is later. Oh, well, he's Kane. So isn't wasn't he a shepherd? So he killed his sheep, too. That's a big jaw, though. Damn, Kane. What what is it then? I don't know. Well, anyway. We cut to present day. Dean is drunk at Gudriel's bar.

LA finally just goes, why is he talking kind of weird? He like when he was looking at Crowley talking, it reminded me kind of of the uh you talking to me. And I was I just kept thinking, why the hell is he acting like this? And then you're like, I think he's supposed to be drunk. And then it like if it like comes the screen goes out and it shows like four beer bottles in front of him. I was like, oh yes, yes.

And I love how Crowley shows up with like a flower and like, oh my god, this is so neat. We're besties. You're gonna help me. I'm so excited. This is gonna be wonderful. Fuck that waitress. Actually, you know what? Don't fuck that waitress. Trouble. She's got VD. Venereal disease.

He's warning our boy. Dean looked hot. He was all scruffy. Drunk Dean. Good looking. I mean, he wa he looked good. He looked good. You know? I mean, I'd pay for his Uber home. Because I'm a gentleman. Make sure you got there. Yeah. Anyway, Crowley convinces Dean not to kill him. Again. And he's like, listen, okay? Gadrill fucked off. All right. He's not here. He's not coming back. I know that's why you're here. We can't do anything about that. I can't help you with that. But you want Abaddon dead just as much as I do. And I figured out how to do it. It's this first blade thing. And it turns out that the demon who knew something about the first blade, your daddy killed him. John Westchester killed him. So how about you go looking through that little journal you've got, check out the John Winchester archives, and tell me if you can tell me anything about the first blade. And Dean's like, You want to hunt? And Carly's like, that's when I was like, You want to hunt with me? Yeah, that's what you were. That's when I what? You talking to me? Well, he goes through Jean's uh he goes through John's journal, and sure enough, there's little notes in there, numbers, T, and he tries to just be like, Yeah, okay, it says what you just told me, and that's all it says. He tries to shut it, and Carly's like, oh, oh, oh, no, no, no. What about this? What about that? And it there's a code. It's to Daddy's locker, which we haven't gone to one of his like locker things in a while. I liked whenever they got in there and it showed the old school devil's trap, the like detailed one. It looked so cool.

Okay, so the blade they're looking for is what that's what Kane was carrying. The Archangels. I'm assuming that's what Kane was carrying at the beginning. Right, but it it's from when the Archangels killed all the knights of hell, except for Abaddon. She got away. Okay, yeah. All right. I just wanted to.

But then Kane tells us. But we find something else. Yeah.

Okay. I just want to get that right in my head before we keep going.

Yeah, it's only known weapon to kill a knight of hell, which is why they need this very specific weapon to get shit done. So they go check out John's locker, find out some more notes, and they're like, oh my God, dad wasn't hunting alone. He was hunting with Tara, and they showed us a picture. And I was like, Hello, Linda Hamilton. Yes. Yes. I wish she still had the short hair.

Yeah. I liked it. Her arms. Oh my God.

I feel like when I was younger, the reason I like consistently worked out, even from when I was really young, was because of Linda Hamilton's. Linda Hamilton's arms. Yeah. Have we talked about that before? No.

A lot of that's like a thing. Like a lot of women have said that they started working out because of Linda Hamilton. She's just such a badass. Those arms, yeah. Phenomenal.

Yeah. She was doing her own stunts. Not all of them, but she was doing some of her own fight work and stuff on that show. Mm-hmm. Good for you. But yeah, we're loving Tara. Well until we meet her.

She's a little crotchety. She's a little crotchety. And she's very weird with the details that she decides to share aggressively. So like I get the feeling she doesn't spend a lot of time with people. Okay. So in the meantime, back at the bunker, Sam and Castel are just hanging out. Cass is really pissed off because he can't taste PB and J anymore. Oh my god.

It becomes a whole thing, guys. Like it's it's the overarching theme of the show that like PB and J. If a PBJ can be gross to me now, then maybe you can change Sam Winchester.

Also, that's pretty sad. I would miss PBJ's too. But when he was starting to bite into it, at first I thought, is he just eating two percent? This is a bread?

Because it didn't look like there was a middle. I know. I'm like, that's your problem, Castel. You didn't put enough PV and J on your PB and J. My God. No wonder you couldn't taste anything.

Sam comes in and just sticks his finger in the was this the peanut butter? I was like, rude. Rude. Well, Sam has suddenly decided, hey, yeah, you know how Dean said he was gonna hunt down Gadrill at the end of last episode? And I was just like, okay, cool, fuck off. I'm not gonna stop you. Bye. That actually was a pretty good idea. I think that maybe we should try to hunt down Gadrill. Like, I wanna, I wanna find him. And then Cass is like, oh my god, well, guess what? There's Gadrill left a little bit of himself inside you.

And you know what? Dean didn't know where he was either because he wasn't at the bar.

And Sam's huge needle. Sam Winchester says, sign me up. Let's go. I'll be the guinea pig. I just finished healing. In fact, I don't think I'm even quite done healing from the trials yet because we're still going in stages here. But sign me up. Let's go.

I liked when Cass thought he really had a guinea pig somewhere in there. It's like, where?

Just a little bit. And then they're like, we gotta, we gotta keep going. We gotta keep going. Well, Dean and Crowley go to Tara, who is working like a pond store or something like that now. And as they're walking in, her knee, it sounded like somebody stepped on crackers. Like a crunch. I was like, what the fuck is that? Like, I have bad knees. I ain't never heard of mega noise like that.

Yeah. That's a problem, Tara.

Dean comes in and introduces himself, and she's like, But didn't you grow up pretty? And it's like the way she said it was like, wait a minute, are you complimenting him or not? Correct.

Even Dean's face was kind of like, the fuck? But that didn't stop her from continuing to say awkward things about him the rest of the time they were there.

Semi-heading on him. Yeah. But in an angry way.

Yeah, exactly. Yeah. I would go, I'd go anywhere with him, but not you, Crowley. I was just like, I don't think Dean wants you to go somewhere with him, Tara. I think you scare him. When she was randomly like, oh yeah. And after the case, me and your daddy had a lovely weekend. I'm like, that was a detail you could have left out there, Tara. Right? Hey there, T Dog. I don't think he needed to know that.

And then when he's like, trust me, and she's like, You sound just like your daddy. When he said he was gonna call me. All right, bitter.

She's giving them everything but what they came for. She's like, let me tell you the tea. Well, finally, she agrees to help them out, even though she does not like that Dina's working with Crowley. Uh-uh.

Oh, I love I love that she thought he was possessed and splashed the holy water.

I love that whenever she decided to break the devil's trap so that Crowley could get free, rather than scratching a line in the devil's trap that she could repaint once they were gone. No, let me blow it with my shotgun so I'm fucked the rest of the day until I can get the floorboards fixed. Probably got some paint thinner around there somewhere. I mean, come on. There had to have been another. I mean, Dean Dean surely had a knife in his pocket. You you had other options here, too. She had no other choice. Yeah, no. She had no other choice.

Well, then she finally reveals that she knew more about the first blade and gives them some more exposition about this thing, and that, yeah, okay, it was Abaddon's friend, and the archangel thing that LA was already talking about. She's explaining all this stuff to them. And then she says that all she could find was a location spell.

I kind of love like Loki loved this. The how they found it.

Oh, wait, no, no, no. I loved the little the little set that she took out of the safe.

LA 14:18

Yeah. Oh, yeah, yeah.

She had it ready organized ready to go in this safe right behind me in the counter.

Well she says only thing in the safe. She it ruined her life and something else. Her knee. Her knee and her life.

I was like, That's why she's got she's got the crunchy knee and the crunchy attitude. Yeah. Yeah. But she keeps it all in a safe. Wait. Waiting right there. It's right there. And then she tells them that she couldn't find one ingredient, essence of Kraken. And Crawley was like, oh my God. Got it. I've got it. In my Belize, my Belize warehouse. I can get to it easy peasy. So, like I said, she blows her load on the floor and Crawley disappears. And then she's like admonishing Dean, like, oh, I can't believe you're doing this. You're your daddy. If your daddy could see you now and all that other stuff. Just more crunchy attitude. Crawley comes back, they do the spell. Take it away, LA.

I so yeah, this is what I love. They they mix all the ingredients in a bowl. And then they pull out the world map and then they just slosh it all over the map. And then Dean lights it on fire, and the whole map lights up and then just crumbles the whole thing down to Missouri. Missouri. Just little tiny Missouri from the whole world map.

And then there was a little charred dot in Missouri. So they didn't have to like go scouring the whole state. They knew like this little dot is where we're going.

It looked really cool. I liked that.

I enjoyed that effect as well. They haven't done something like that that I'm remembering off the top of my head since um they did that spell. They did a similar spell on the table. But it like told them.

Dean and Crowley go driving up to a lovely little plot of land, an adorable house. Yes. I mean, it's so cute. And we'd live there. I would too. And then they get out of the car and Crowley's like, oh my God, I'm feeling something.

The way he stopped and like touched the car a little bit was like, it reminded me of like a lady clutching her pearls.

He was like, oh. I feel I feel so. Kane was giving him the vapors, and you know what? Me too, Crowley. Yeah, yeah. He he was beekeeping age. That Kane.

But I I like the moments where you see Crowley, like not his total put-together, like snarky self. So I liked he's like, I feel something dark. And then he's like shitting his pants when he sees this beekeeper.

Dean sees the beekeeper and is like, oh my god, look at your dad. He keeps bees. And then Dean, you know, by the end of the episode, is like, Carly, I'm gonna fuck your dad. He's gonna give me something. He's gonna give it to me. They really do share. They do. They do. Family don't end in blood. Well, anyway, Kane knows they're there. So even though they try to s Crowley tries to get Dean to sneak off, Kane suddenly appears and does his dramatic lifting of the veil. And we get to see those baby blues and that waxed mustache. Perfectly salt and peppered. How tall is hair? How tall is he? I don't know.

For all intent and purpose. Well, it turns out that it wasn't the archangels that killed all the knights of help. It was Kane.

He uh also let them know that, hey, by the way, yeah, my brother, he wasn't talking to God. He was talking to Lucifer. And Lucifer was going to take my brother's soul. So I made him a deal. Let my brother go to heaven and I'll go to hell. But Lucifer said, Okay, deal, but you have to be the one to send him there. Yeah, so that's why I did it. That's why he did it. He's a good guy. Yeah. The father of murder. Great guy. Daddy. He's the daddy of murder. Well, after he tells them all this stuff, he's just like, Okay, well, I'm going to the store. I gotta make my weekly grocery run. I need some vegetables. Oh, he also told them how awesome bees are. Oh, yeah. If the bees go, we go. Bees are amazing. Bees are amazing. And another important thing, when they were talking about Abaddon, he got noticeably agitated and started fucking with his wedding ring.

I totally thought his ring was gonna be the blade somehow.

That was somehow gonna be related to the weapon. Yeah. Yeah. Because it's like they were like, we didn't do a tracking spell to find you, Daddy. We did a tracking spell to find the blade. So where is it? Clearly, it's gotta be here. Well, then Kane explains well, me and the blade are one because I have this fancy mark on my arm.

It's like a little keloid scar. I was just gonna say how funny he looks standing there with the grocery bag when they when he just like pops in.

When he comes back.

Like the father of murder just standing there with the bigger. He had his jacket on, and it's like he used his paper and I appreciate that. I appreciate it, Daddy. I love you. He was getting fresh produce. Like we said, he's the good guy.

Like he just looked so so weird, just standing there waiting, like he was just waiting for them with his groceries.

Yeah. So of course, before before he comes back with his grocery bag, though, Dean and Crowley are outside. And Crowley's like, oh my god, let's get the fuck out of here. And Dean's like, uh, no, he just told us he's about to leave the house. Like, we're just gonna wait for him to go, and then we're gonna go in there and find the weapon. Like, surely it's here. Do a be B and E. Do a real quick one. Good old B and E. It's been a while. All right. Gotta make sure I'm not rusty. I'm like, yeah, of course. That's what you do.

Naturally, yeah.

Raid the father of murders house. So they go back in there to do that. And while they're trying to find it, they find the picture of his dead wife. And Dean realizes, oh my god, their rings are similar. So this woman's picture on the mantle isn't just here for decoration. This woman is actually important to him. And they're like, oh my god, yes, this woman is important. And so Crowley's walking around holding the picture. And then they see uh lights and hear a car come in. Oh no, I think that's when they turn around and see Kane with his groceries. And then the trucks are pulling up, and Kane is pissed because he straight up asked them, like, did anybody else know that y'all came here? Like, I'm trying to be off the grid. I'm trying to be out of just me and the bees, man. I'm retired. I'm retired, Daddy. Well, demons fucked his shit up. They did. Demons found him. Like, not only that, like he had to murder all those demons, but never all of a sudden done. Like, how long has it been since he's had to do that? But I think he likes that style because that was what he did in the beginning.

They're all in there together, and he's like, I mean, just make make this as efficient as possible.

Berly 23:44

But that was in 1863, LA. He's changed.

Well, no, because remember he had to go to the grave and be like, look away, wife. Because I gotta do it again. I gotta do it. Daddy's gotta murder. Yeah. These guys fucking came to my house. They blew my spot up.

Love you, baby. But I gotta bring my promise. But first, I'm gonna make sure that this killer guy is actually a killer. So Kane just sits at his kitchen table whenever all these dean lets let's these demons in. I mean, at least he was nice enough to only let them in like a couple at a time. True. He could have just left the doors open and had them all come in, but he was like, no, I want to spread this out. Yeah. Let's make this last.

Give it a fair fight. So he's having them come in.

Berly 24:31

He's giving Dean like two or three at a time and then giving Crowley a little one-on-one action in the living room. All while he's just sitting there shucking his fucking corn. I'd watch him shuck some corn. I mean me too, but really, guy?

They're getting their asses beat. Hey, not his not his problem. That's true. I I kind of appreciated him and his just uh very even killed nature. And that he was sticking to his word until he couldn't.

And Crowley, I liked that he would kill his one guy and then stand there and watch. Yeah, Dean. Like, I noticed that Dean obviously noticed it too from the ending of the episode, but I was getting I got tickled by that.

And then Kane is like, oh my god, yeah, let me tell you what happened to my wife. So I was so in love with Colette. She was awesome. And they're like, but she told you to stop, didn't she? He was like, Yes, yes. She told me to stop. I left the Kings of Hell. I was gonna put everything behind. But, or not the Kings, the Knights of Hell. Yeah. But the Knights, they didn't like it. So they kidnapped my wife to try and force me back into action. And so I started murdering. I went on murder, murdering, murdering to go save my wife. And whenever I found her, she was possessed by Abaddon. And whenever she was like hurting my wife, that was crazy. It was horrible. The noises like cracking her neck over and over again. Yeah. I mean fucking her up. So Kane's thinking she's dead. Like Abaddon's already killed her because she snapped her freaking neck and is doing all kinds of stuff.

Well, it was kind of cool how she was going in and out of her plus the wife and then the wife and then her.

The actress did phenomenal. Yeah. The actress did phenomenal between Colette and Abaddon and all of that kind of stuff. Well, anyway, he's thinking she's dead. So he goes to finally stab her with the first blade, thinking he's gonna kill Abaddon, but Abaddon smokes out just in time, and his wife is still alive when he stabs her.

I liked that it showed the demons running in, and then he put his hands on them and teleported them outside to where the demons are just running right past them. Like the demons don't even realize that the two dudes that they've come there for that they're running right by. It was it was cool. Yeah. I liked that. I like that. And then we saw the the pink stent going on in the house. Kane was Kane was up there in his house, doing his daddy murder thing. In the meantime, Cass and Sam are back at the bunker, and Cass is talking about his sandwich, and Sam is like being like, get it, get the grace, and so they finally get it all out.

Well, anyway, Dean and Crowley go to the ocean. And just I think just Crowley goes, right? Well, I mean, Crowley actually goes in the ocean. Dean drives them there, though. Oh, okay. Like they drive to the ocean. Oh they drive to the ocean, and that's when Dean is just like, all right, fucker. You knew the whole time what was going on. You played me. You knew we were gonna have to get the mark. You knew that I was gonna be worthy. And Crowley was just like, Yeah.

So Dean gets a nice punch in, and then Crowley goes to search the ocean because he can to find to find the blade. The mark. Dean's Dean's mark. I liked the transfer of the mark. Me too, yeah. That was cool. All the veins a nice effect. Yeah. All the veins and the pulsing and the transition from one arm to the other. But yeah, at the end, Dean like pulls up a sleeve and is like, oh, I'm marked.

Before Kane was doing Morley Gray caveman things in a leather jacket on our screens, he had a whole millennia-long resume as the Bible's original problem child. Cain is the firstborn son of Adam and Eve. In other words, the first baby ever born to another human instead of just poofed into existence by God. He grew up to be a farmer, married a woman named Aklima? Not Collette. No. Oh, they got it wrong.

God was into Abel's offering, but not Cain's. The text never actually spells out why, but scholars have been throwing theories at this for literally millennia. Maybe Cain half-assed it. Maybe it's a farmer versus shepherd metaphor. Maybe Abel just looked super hot that day. We we saw that. We saw what Cain looked like. Oh cable. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.

But God also slaps a protective mark on him so nobody else can kill him in revenge. Yes, this is the actual biblical original mark of Cain. Britannica adds a scholarly wrinkle here. Some biblical crit critics? Some biblical critics think the whole story might have started as an origin tale explaining why a nomadic tribe, possibly the Kennites, carried a special tattoo-like mark and avenged murdered, avenged murdered members severely. So the mark may have started as tribal lore before it became one guy's personal curse. And here's the part that's very on brand for supernatural. Cain doesn't just wander off and disappear. He becomes a city builder, and his family tree turns into an entire industry. Descendants who become tent-dwelling herdsmen, musicians, and blacksmiths. So somehow the world's first murderer is also credited so terrible with kickstarting urban civilization and the music industry.
