Thanks so much for being here and big time cheers. Okay, hey, friends, it's Deb. Welcome back to Thriving Alcohol Free. I am so happy you're here. I am so excited.

Deb:

Today, my guest is Jessa Frances. Her Instagram handle is untoxicatedworld Same website. If you are not following her, please do so. She and I got connected at Sandsbar event is where we met in Nashville, tennessee, back in September. I am absolutely thrilled, jessa. Thank you for being here today. How are you?

Jessa:

I'm great. I am so happy to be here, just honored to be on your podcast and so excited to talk about all the things.

Deb:

I'm like we are going to have to talk fast, because you are a walking encyclopedia of everything from functional drinks to brands, to everything that is available. All the overwhelm that people feel, that we feel when we walk into the store and go what should I buy? What is this mean? What is this ingredient? You're just like you're the Google. You're the Google of non-alcoholic drinks. So instead of going to Google, let's just go to Jessa. We're going to get into it today and we're going to talk about what's available and what works. Does that sound good? Yes, this is right. This is like in your wheelhouse. Do you want to share it with everybody? Your background, how you got into this space and how you've become the authority in non-alcoholic drinks?

Jessa:

Yeah, no, absolutely. So it came upon my life just kind of serendipitously. The universe said this is for you the best things in life right Yep.

Jessa:

Yes, I, very strangely, I didn't even try for this job. I ended up as the director of brand operations for the non-alcoholic bottle shop Ceche and Arleson, south Carolina, and, as you know, these are new bottle shops, they're only a couple of years old. There's so much to learn. They're all startups. This is a new world, this whole NA space, and so we were just learning as we went along, like just figured out as we went, and so we started off with 20-ish different brands and started off with the different categories and just expanded and expanded, and expanded.

Jessa:

And part of my job was I was the copywriter and writing Meet the Makers posts, so I was reaching out to one brand at a time and interviewing them on their product and learning everything. And before I know it, I know every single brand out of every category. I know how they made it, why they made it, their back stories and that's not even touching the ingredients and the different functional purposes, how to mix and how to make and how to pair. And then I'm working, not just back of house, packing and shipping and moving things, I'm working front of house with the customers and guiding them through the store and helping them find the right products. Like what do you like? You want smoky, let's go over here. Do you like sweet, let's go over here. And just walking them through everything, and I did that every day for a couple of years. Wow, so yeah, I'm a walking.

Deb:

You're the Google. You're the Google of non-alcoholic drinks. Yes, okay. So do you want to talk about pairing the person to the product? Kind of get into that a little bit. Like you mentioned, smoky, sweet, like, do you want to drill it down to that a?

Jessa:

little bit, and I am creating a fun guide for this, which I'm really excited about now.

Deb:

Good, good, that will be brilliant.

Jessa:

Yes. So I just think it's just going to be so great and eventually I think it would be really cool to actually take a test Like what are the flavors you like? And then here's your list of products. A little quiz.

Jessa:

For me, for example, I love clean label. I don't want a bunch of preservatives, I don't want a bunch of sugar, I don't want stevia even. I want very clean label products. And so I actually, on my sub-stack, created a whole list of 10 different clean label products which are free, super healthy, infused with great ingredients, but beyond that, you know, sometimes we want a margarita, we're in that mood for a tequila, but we don't want a mezcal, we don't like smoky, we don't want really sour, you know those kinds of things. So it's going to have everything you need to know to get you to the right brand.

Jessa:

I'm so close with so many brands. These people are my friends and getting them your business is my goal and helping you find what you love right. It's just a process, a taste and try. You know, if you like something very herbal or botanical, if you like that fruity kind of thing and I think you're probably going to have this soon, you know, is the way to say okay, if I have something as a, I'm making these mocktails. If I have something that has lemon in it, these are the things that go really well with it. So, yeah, there's just there's a lot coming and right now I'm just doing free, like absolutely free one-on-one consultations with any direct consumer. That is just guidance, are you Really? Oh my gosh, find me on my LinkedIn or on LinkedIn on my.

Deb:

Instagram oh, your link tree Okay and you can set up an appointment with you.

Jessa:

Yes, Set up appointment, free consultations, just hey, I've tried the lines and I have not. I've just been so disappointed. There's so many things out there, I'm overwhelmed. What should I try next? And I will not only send you a list of products, but they'll probably all have discount codes.

Deb:

That's amazing, amazing, I love it. Okay, that's huge. Yeah, that's really nice. Yes, so have a free consultation on what to drink, right, when you're not drinking, because it can be. So I mean, you have to kiss a lot of frogs right before you find the ones in the store that you like. Like you said, you have to taste and try and to kind of cut back on maybe some of this money that you're spending and find, kind of pair it in advance would be very helpful. It's like the FastPass, like when you go to Disneyland you get the FastPass with Jessa. On what to drink when you're not drinking, yeah, okay, well, that's fantastic, all right.

Deb:

What about functional drinks? This is an area that I personally have not. I mean, I have drinks with Ashwagandha. I guess that's a functional drink, would it be? Yes, like that's a calming, okay, so that's probably the only kind of functional drinks that I've had, I think. Okay, yeah, I mean, maybe I've tried some, tried some with CBD. I personally didn't care for, like that flavor. There is a flavor, right, am I not? I'm not imagining it. There's some kind of taste there and I'm like it's just not my thing.

Jessa:

Yeah, you have to like it, you have to want that particular effect. I mean, for me hemp infused has never just been my jam. I have tasted and tried all the different products, so at least I know the flavor profiles and things like that, so that I could.

Deb:

Okay, wait. So hemp infused. So that would be like Pathfinder, yes or no? So, like I love Pathfinder, so that is that adaption. Is that? Is that a functional drink? I don't even know. I do like it.

Jessa:

Yes, pathfinder, and that that one is different. And I'm actually in the midst of writing a new sub stack about CBD and hemp infused in general, because now there's Delta eight and Delta nine, there's even Delta 10. There's the all what is that?

Deb:

What does that mean?

Jessa:

So that actually has a bit of the THC, and the THC is what will actually get you high. So it's not just like CBD. I need some stress relief. I just want to feel calmer and unwind. Thc is going to make you go wee a little bit.

Deb:

Oh yeah, no, thank you.

Jessa:

It's kind of just depends on what you want.

Jessa:

But for me I'm actually a huge functional gal, but I I stay away from hemp, cbd, all that. What I play around with is the new tropics and the use for it and the um. So there's a couple of different differences between like adaptogen versus new tropic, and the way about it is adapt. You're adapting to overwhelm, stress, frustration. New tropic this is for your brain, this is for cognition, and that's usually when you're going to be drinking things that are mushroom infused. Lion's main mushroom Great for your memory. There's Cordyceps, there's Turkey tail, there's a Rishi mushroom is a huge one which plays both ways.

Deb:

What do you mean? Plays both ways.

Jessa:

It actually helps you with your stress.

Deb:

Oh, okay, and cognitive function. So it's like an adaptogen and a new.

Jessa:

And a new topic. Yeah, and I did. This is another one and we can link my sub stack. I do have an article written with a little bit of a highlight about the different adaptogens and topics and the differences and more in depth. But yeah, it kind of depends on that effect that you're after, right, are you in it for the stress relief? Are you in it because you want to better your health and my favorite thing is the better your health stuff?

Deb:

Yeah, you're very healthy.

Jessa:

Yeah, I am doing the opposite of alcohol. I'm not taking away years of my life, I'm adding years to my life. I am bettering myself. Not only do I not have any guilt drinking this, I feel good, I'm proud of myself, I'm doing good things for my body, and so there are products out there that are truly going to be beneficial, which is amazing, amazing. I mean like take alcohol and spin it on its head right Screw you booze.

Deb:

Screw you booze. That's right. I love that. That should be the name of this podcast. Screw you booze. Yeah, I love that. There's our episode, yeah.

Jessa:

So I mean, that's what I love about the functional things, because they call it functional, because it has a purpose right. A lot of people go into this space because they're like well, I want to give up alcohol, but I don't want to give up the buzz. Well, if you're looking for a buzz, if you're looking for a feel, then you're going to have to try, specifically like amino acids. L-theanine is huge, it boosts your serotonin levels and all it is is a green tea extract.

Deb:

Oh, I like that. Okay, yeah.

Jessa:

Yeah, there's products like bon buzz.

Deb:

Well, I was going to say I drink arbon fizz sticks and that has L-theanine in it. Yeah, so was I drinking a functional drink. I didn't even know it. I drink it every day, yeah.

Jessa:

So clueless.

Deb:

Chessa, I'm so glad you're here to educate me and everyone else, because I drink that all the time. I didn't know that was a functional drink. I just knew it was healthy. It's healthy Like I felt like I was drinking my vitamins is how I describe it.

Jessa:

Right, well, that's functional, absolutely Okay, and one of the things that's really popular right now are those different drinks that have the list on the outside right that. Oh, l-theanine, and some of them have, like, the caffeine boost and, depending on if you're looking for energy, helping with your sleep, helping with motivation, focus, etc. L-theanine is also really popular for anyone dealing with ADHD. It helps with clarity and focus.

Deb:

Okay, I am so glad you're here, thank you. Thank you, I'm going to make sure I have two today.

Jessa:

Oh yeah. So I mean, I mean we could. We could definitely talk about it forever. There's so many cool things, so many different products that have these different ingredients and most of them.

Jessa:

I just met a new brand that I really, really love. It's called Benu and they have, you know, all of these and it's labeled right there on the can. It tells you exactly what it's uses for and everything. It's nice and clear and simple. Lion's Mane Mushroom helps with your memory. Different things like that. So, depending on the effect that you're after, depending on the benefit, one of my favorite brands and a brand I work with regularly, called Rosses Vada If you've never tried this, if you've never played around with this, if you're looking for something really full bodied, rich, unique, bold, you know that's going to stand out in a way that is so much more than a lot of these one-for-one replacements, right, we've got some great things C-Lip and Baxbotanics and Monday and Cutabove right these one-for-one replacements. But if you're looking for something that's not going to be triggering at all, it's going to help you feel better long-term and it's going to really make you feel like this is an adult cocktail I'm having a beverage for a grown-up right? This is not on the kitty menu.

Deb:

Yeah, yeah, it's not a Shirley Temple.

Jessa:

Yes, rosses Vada is amazing because not only does it have those rich flavors, it's 100% extracted from plants, no preservatives, and every single ingredient is some ancient remedy to something. You know, like it helps with cognition or blood flow. One is a libido booster. Wow, all of these different things. So that's my jam, that's my favorite thing. So when I'm making cocktails I have to slow down to sip it. Even you know Like I'm not just going to chug this Shirley Temple right, just slurp it up with a straw, like I'm going to sip in this and savor it the same way I did my red wine or that martini, and it's benefiting me.

Deb:

Now that brand. Okay, is it a ready to drink? Or it's something that you're like putting over ice and you're drinking. What is it? Sorry, it's a spirit.

Jessa:

It's okay, you're at restorative and it's called the Rosses Vada, which is Sanskrit for soulful sipping, which is very beautiful. I love that. It's another one if you're wanting to try this, I have a discount code and my link tree Highly highly, highly recommend it.

Deb:

Okay, awesome, awesome, awesome. Okay, I don't think I know I haven't tried that one.

Jessa:

Yeah well, it's definitely a unique one.

Deb:

It's a coming out of New York City, so when you drink that juice, just sip it over ice like a big ice cube. No, are you mixing that? Well, how do you make it? Do you make it as a as a non-alcohol cocktail? What do you do?

Jessa:

Yes, I make. I definitely am making cocktails with this. There's three skews. One of them, for example, the rose bergamot. It pairs phenomenally with grapefruit. I Just mix it with a sparkling grapefruit by Betty Buzz and I'm yeah, yeah. But I also make margarita-esque drinks and I actually mix in lime and agave and just shake it up in a shaker. The black ginger I mix with cold brew and some honey for an espresso martini to die for, oh my gosh. Oh, so martini's in my house for breakfast.

Deb:

We're coming over. We're coming over to Jess's for breakfast. That sounds so good, Okay. So when you make it in the morning, do you put it like in a martini glass? Are you putting it like in a mason jar? How are you? How are you drinking it?

Jessa:

I I do it different ways. That depends on my day to be honest yeah.

Jessa:

I want something cold. I'll actually make kind of like a, an iced coffee with it. Uh-huh, nice, yep. It actually also pairs really really well with like turmeric and pineapple and orange, so I'll make myself like this really healthy, like jumpstart breakfast drink. It's a. It's another one. They have their own full list of recipes for all of your brands and all of the different ingredients, where it's being sourced from, what the Effects and benefits are, the ancient ritual that was behind each product. It's incredible.

Deb:

That's huge. That's huge. Wow. It shouldn't come as a surprise that I am a massive fan of Giesen's zero percent wines and I am so proud to have them as the exclusive non-alcoholic wine sponsor of the thriving alcohol free podcast. If you're reducing your alcohol intake, Giesen's alcohol removed wines are a phenomenal alternative, without sacrificing anything except maybe a hangover. Giesen's zero percent wines are not grape juice in a wine bottle. There is some serious science that goes into every single bottle of their alcohol removed options. Their full strength wines go through advanced spinning cone technology where the alcohol is removed, but the wine maintains the aroma and the body to create a low calorie wine that never contains more than 0.5 ABB. Friends, I was not good at science, but the Giesen and winemaker Duncan he sure was. So I trust the magic of Giesen's alcohol remove deliciousness.

Deb:

Giesen comes from the Marble region of New Zealand, widely available in global markets. If I can get it here in Kentucky, you could probably find it where you are too. I hope you love it. Okay, how about for, like, maybe somebody who's pregnant, breastfeeding, or maybe first people on certain medications? Like, are there people who should be aware? What are? What things should we be aware of about functional drinks?

Jessa:

So this is pretty big for me and something I educate on all the time. I actually was working with the restaurant Flonta and they have three spirit and if you haven't heard of three spirit, it's another great brand with adaptogens one of the ingredients. There's one with um ashwagandha, and ashwagandha you should not be drinking if you're pregnant, and I found out that their their workers were just I mean, there's no, there's nothing on the menu. There's, they're not saying anything, you know. And of course there's pregnant women coming in there and I was like you have to put on here that this is adaptogenic. You have to have that label because as a mother, I would have Probably completely steered away from all adaptogenic, neutropic drinks while I was pregnant. Just go for your one for one. Replacements do your beers, your wines. There's plenty out there, absolutely plenty out there, and there are a lot of them that are saying you know, like they're safe. However, for me I say better safe than sorry If you were pregnant or breastfeeding, they're clear.

Jessa:

And then another thing you kind of need to notice if you grab a Adaptingic drink and it has citric acid in it because that's a big thing people are saying, oh well, I tried all these different ones and they don't do anything for me. Well, if they have citric acid in it, citric acid actually like cuts the adaptogens capabilities and half.

Deb:

Oh really.

Jessa:

You're like, why do you even put it in there? Right, but they're using it, of course, as a preservative, without realizing that citric acid is messing up the benefits, right? So, but yes, those are two big things. When it comes to adaptogens, be careful of the preservatives being used in adaptogenic drinks. And if you're pregnant, nursing and specifically on like certain medications, always consult a doctor. Say, hey, can I have Lyon's main mushroom? Can I have ashwagandha? Most of the time they'll probably say yes, if for medication, wise, but when it comes to pregnancy, no.

Deb:

Okay, no, that's really good. You had mentioned that you have, like, I think on your subject you said that you have like 10 different preservative free, clean products. Can you mention some of those that are on there? I mean, that's so important to be drinking things that aren't filled with preservatives.

Jessa:

Yeah, it's actually the or the uh substack is called. Are we substituting alcohol for preservatives? You know, because a lot of brands are really wanting to be shelf stable, they want to compete with the traditionals and they want to be up on that shelf, which is beautiful and needed. However, preservatives, depending on the preservatives, some are worse than others and I went into that in depth in the in the article as well, for better or for worse.

Deb:

Okay.

Jessa:

Nominal brand Love them and they are not just preservative free but organic and super low in sugar. They only use organic monk fruit. So great, great brand. Curious elixirs. A lot of people have heard of curious elixirs and John the founder was like refusing to cut corners. I'm not putting that junk in my in my drinks.

Deb:

Wow.

Jessa:

Um, and they have right now. They have eight different flavors and each one of them have a different adaptogenic ingredient. Some of them are like just very safe, even for pregnancy, where it's like just like lemon balm, so just kind of pay attention, but they're preservative free. And then uh rosses fata the one that I mentioned is definitely one of my faves. And then if you want to try a verju that's a really good way to go healthy and like steer away from the adaptogens there's Murie, uh M-U-R-I and Kali K-A-L-L-Y, both of those fantastic wine replacements. And then, if you want something very delicate, if you love something very light and fresh and delicate I love rock grace.

Deb:

Oh the wine, it's a mood.

Jessa:

It's like my self care, like I'm going to lay in the bath tub and have some rock grace and have some rock grace. Yeah, I love them.

Deb:

Okay, so a verju. How would you describe it? It's a wine replacement, so a verju is actually, you know, alcohol removed wine.

Jessa:

They make the wine traditionally, they go through the whole process of making the alcohol and then they do the extraction process. The verju is the unfermented grapes, usually Chardonnay grapes. So there's these little tart grapes that they just turn into like that grape juice that's very wine-esque. And then they add in all of these herbs and spices and all of these extra special flavors. I mean, the world is your oyster with verju, because they can play with it so many different ways, like Kali, for example, has a berry fennel, and then they have orchard sage. So it's got like, you know, those orchard like apples and flavors like that, mixed with that sage, so sweet and savory and pairs well with meals, that kind of thing. So so great.

Deb:

Yeah, okay, okay. Good snow and rock. It's rock grace, and that's the non-alcohol. Is that your favorite non-alcoholic wine? One of them? I know there's so many.

Jessa:

It depends. You know, like if I for an alcohol-removed wine, I typically go for prima pavé. I was never a big sparkling wine person before, but when it comes to all removed sparkles all day, it really makes a huge difference. And then when I'm wanting like that self-care moment at the end of the day to unwind, rock grace is usually my go-to.

Deb:

Okay, okay, and rock grace, is it?

Jessa:

You know I actually love the original. If I want to celebrate like for New Year's, I'm definitely going with the ar glow.

Deb:

Okay, it's called ar glow, ar glow Okay, I love that. Yeah, that's such a great name, that's so perfect. Yes, the holidays are coming, so these are great options for people for us to have for, especially as the holidays are coming. They're here. I should say by the time this comes out, it'll be Thanksgiving and Christmas and New Year's and all of it. So these are great for people to have options what to drink or not drinking. So we'll link as much as we can in the show notes so people can grab information from you. Yes, yes, so how long have you been alcohol free? I don't think I've been asked you that.

Jessa:

I'm actually a mindful drinker. I'm very lucky, all right.

Deb:

How long have you been a mindful drinker? Yes, Sorry.

Jessa:

I guess I should have said that. No, you're fine. I have been a mindful drinker for forever. Yeah, I'm very lucky. I do have a lot of addiction in my family, so it is very near and dear to my heart. I have loved being able to help them. For me, even I'm prior military and was I went through a period of time where there was definitely too much drinking but I was easily away to able to cut away with it. I drink less and less Like. I honestly remember the last time I had a drink Maybe my birthday, like I had one drink with my dad. Because I am fortunate enough to not have that addiction. It hasn't been an issue for me, but because of these amazing alternatives like why?

Deb:

Why, exactly Like you said, like you're doing something so much better for your body, right when you're yeah, for those times when you're not drinking, yeah, yes. Well, thank you for your service to our country.

Jessa:

Thank you for your support.

Deb:

Yeah, freedom is not free. So thank you, very, very, very grateful for our military. I didn't know that you were a veteran. I didn't know that.

Jessa:

Yes, yes, I didn't know that. So thank you for your service to our country. Thank you for your service to our country, thank you. Thank you for your service to our country, thank you for your service to our country. I'm going to say thank you to the Navy installation as we speak.

Deb:

Are you really you really love that, you really love the military? No pun intended.

Jessa:

Yeah, I've been affiliated to in the military, joined two weeks out of high school, wow, but yeah, I mean. It really taught me so many amazing things and one of them was pride in myself, and I think the reason I stick to saying mindful drinker instead of sober, even though I really don't drink, is because, as someone who is talking to bartenders all the time, I can go in and I can say listen, I'm your friend in every manner. I get both sides of the coin. I'm not here preaching.

Deb:

Exactly, exactly yeah.

Jessa:

Listen, vegetarians need a salad on your menu. Mindful drinkers and sober, curious and sober people need an option on your menu. You know we got gluten free. We've got, and that's another thing. I wrote a little post. You know how they put, like little peppers.

Deb:

Oh, right If it's spicy.

Jessa:

Yeah, Can you imagine having like a little NA like emoji?

Deb:

That's a great idea and then it's just yeah, you placed your order and it's not like you're making a big deal about it. Yeah, that'd be so perfect. Yeah, just a little. Yeah, maybe it's a martini glass, or there's no martini glass, you know, or something you know.

Jessa:

Yeah, so for me it's just about inclusivity, Like provide something for everyone, be there for you, know all of your guests and capitalize on it, absolutely yeah, the market's booming.

Deb:

So, before we go, if anybody is listening, and you have a restaurant that you love, you love to frequent and they don't have things on the menu, connect them to Jessa. She can help them create a menu, an alcohol-free menu. You actually are working with somebody that had reached out to me on Instagram a restaurant and you are working with them right now to you know, blow up their menu with amazing mocktails, non-alcoholic options, and so if you're a restaurant owner, you're listening and you're interested, definitely reach out to Jessa for that.

Jessa:

Yes, and I have one ask.

Deb:

Okay, yeah, okay.

Jessa:

So you are in a bar or a restaurant or a hotel and you're sitting there and you have nothing to order because there's nothing for you. Make your voice heard, tell them do you think you'll ever get anything alcohol-free? Do you think you'll ever get any alcohol-free spirits? You should really have, you know, something inclusive for somebody who doesn't want to drink alcohol. Because the more demand, the more likely it is for us to actually have these products for ourselves and to feel included when we're going out with our friends and family and to be part of the party and to be able to socialize and celebrate just like everyone else. So make the demand known, make sure that they understand that they're missing out, that you're going to get a water but you would have got a $10 cocktail.

Deb:

I was going to say, yeah, I mean, I'd pay $10. Yeah, absolutely, I'll pay exactly what I would have paid for a cocktail or for a glass of wine if I could have something. Yeah, that's great. Okay, that's great advice. Thank you for sharing that. That's perfect, okay. Thank you everyone.
