Today, I sit down with Willie Handler, a memoirist and researcher whose family history traces back to the Holocaust. Mr. Handler’s parents were both Holocaust survivors — one imprisoned in seven concentration camps and the other deported to a Ukrainian ghetto. What began as a personal memoir turned into a mission to uncover how that trauma shaped not only his own life, but the lives of children and grandchildren of survivors across the world.

We explore his groundbreaking new project, “The Hidden Victims,” which documents the emotional and psychological aftermath inherited by second- and third-generation descendants of Holocaust survivors. Mr. Handler shares how trauma—when left unspoken—can become embedded in family dynamics, passed on not just culturally but genetically. He describes discovering shocking family secrets during his research, including documents from Nazi archives and international databases. His journey through grief, healing, and discovery becomes a blueprint for others hoping to reclaim their history and understand their own inherited struggles.

In our conversation, we draw parallels between the silence of Holocaust survivors and that of veterans from Vietnam, Korea, and Iraq—individuals who rarely spoke about their experiences until it was too late. Together, we reflect on the importance of storytelling, documentation, and intergenerational healing.
