Ep 60 Julie Armour - practical safety wins over theory ever time!
Oct 31, 2022 Season 2 Episode 60

Julie Armour is a Human factors, health & safety risk consultant who has been working in this field for over 35 years, running her own consulting business for almost 30 years. This has led to extensive experience in human factors risk and HSE management which has been demonstrated in academic, clinical, recreational, and industrial environments. Experience stemmed from an initial master’s degree in biomechanics which progressed to an academic career in anatomy & biomechanics primarily in rehabilitation & occupational health, lecturing at both Australian and British Universities. This initial training in biomechanics flowed onto work in ergonomics, human factors engineering and other safety related disciplines. This training was of particular importance when considering the large proportion of costs in any organisation that can be traced back to incidents involving a mismatch in human-machine-environment interaction design, which biomechanics attempts to redress.

An academic role was followed by a consulting role with a range of experience initially in heavy industry such as mining, oil and gas, construction, utilities (power, gas, water, sewage & waste services) & telecommunications, transport (aviation, road, rail & maritime) to all other industries including manufacturing, education, healthcare, retail/wholesale trade, hospitality, finance, public administration, agriculture, forestry & fishing, arts & media. Julie has since worked in a variety of capacities for regulators, union and government organisations as well as international consulting firms. Consulting work has included extensive involvement in Front End Engineering & Design, Engineering, Procurement & Construction Management & Turnkey (FEED/EPCM/EPC) in greenfield and brownfield engineering projects. She has been involved in the setup of major engineering projects across the Asia- Pacific region providing Human Factor risk & Health Safety Security Environmental (HSSE) advice & workshop facilitation. This has included the development of HSSE management systems the diagnosis of HSSE issues, strategy/plan development, implementation, monitoring & review. Julie is also employed by a variety of law firms throughout Asia Pacific to provide expert opinion. She is a member of several professional societies including the International Society of Biomechanics, UK’s Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors, International Business Continuity Institute, and the Risk Management Institute of Australasia.
