This week, Tim and Ade face their biggest challenge yet… fitting two full camping setups into one vehicle. No pressure.
In The Great Pack Down, they’re planning a Cumbria getaway and, thanks to a 4 hour car sharing journey, are forced (yes, forced) to rethink their usual “bring everything just in case” approach. With limited space and big ambitions, it’s time to strip things back and figure out what you actually need for a brilliant weekend outdoors.
There’s plenty of debate, some surprisingly sensible decisions, and the small matter of squeezing in Ade’s cooking plans—because apparently a leg of lamb is now considered “essential kit.” Think downsizing from bell tents to lighter setups, ditching fire pits, and trusting the British weather to double as a fridge… because nothing says luxury like Nature's 1°C beer chiller.
Less gear, shared journey, same great adventure.

Welcome to season four of Casual Camping Podcast. Hope for the best camping discussion both in and out of the field. Here are your hosts, Tim and Aid.
SPEAKER_01Hello and welcome to this week's episode of Casual Camping Podcast. We're incredibly grateful that you've lent us your dirty little earhills once more. I'm Tim. I'm Aid.
SPEAKER_03I was just cloughing down a sandwich there. And uh welcome. Thanks for joining us. Uh it feeling like springtime here in the UK.
SPEAKER_01It's it certainly is, isn't it? I'm uh I I should have closed the curtain actually on uh where I'm recording because I'm a little bit blinded. Blinded by the lights. Don't sing it, don't sing it, don't sing it.
SPEAKER_03One time they will start taxing the thoughts in our heads too.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, they will when we're all plugged into the machine. That uh that's when that will happen. What um what are you drinking today, Ed?
SPEAKER_03Well, I made a rookie move and thought hydrate, get some water. Um it'll be uh good for you and stuff. I did get the brandy out and thought, no, actually, you're only drinking it just to show off and stuff. And we are recording at eight in the morning, you know. It's probably what you're drinking, Tim.
SPEAKER_01It's not eight in the morning. Cheeky. It's uh it's nearly 7 p.m. And uh, and I've I've actually um I've upgraded my cup of tea to a shandy. Oh but it's not a proper beer, it's uh, but it's very it's very refreshing.
SPEAKER_03Wow. Uh yeah, you you've put me to shame. Uh, like I say, I was gonna go with because I've been drinking a lot of beer recently, and I think, well, you know what, we're gonna have a heavy weekend this weekend because we're camping.
SPEAKER_01If we are going camping, I mean you're camping every blooming week at the moment. It's so yes, I'm very excited because I'm going camping.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, well, the reason I'm camping every week, Tim, is I don't know whether you know, but I do a podcast, it's all about camping.
SPEAKER_01I uh I do a podcast too, but you know, it's more about talking about going camping rather than actually going camping. That's why you're the lead, and I'm just the tech guy.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, very good, very good. I um yeah, it's just all worked. I mean, don't get me wrong, uh I I I am gonna be left. Uh my my partner is annoyed that I'm away every weekend. She's like, I'm going to die just from starvation.
SPEAKER_01You mean she's not grateful that you've gone away?
SPEAKER_03Well, I mean, most people are really, you know, oh god, thank God he's left. But uh I have been getting what what I have been doing really is finalising my list of what I'm taking to the bushcraft show this year. And now I know which tent I'm going with, I know what I'm gonna set up because that show off in me thinks, you know what? This is this is the bit that I want to be taking with me. This is what I'm going to be comfortable with, yeah. And this is, you know, there's there's within me there's a certain amount of showy-offness, but also really I mean pourquoi.
SPEAKER_01I have I hadn't noticed that you're a bit showy head.
SPEAKER_03I'm sorry. I it's it's a a very uh peculiar mix of embarrassed about it, but also showing off as well. So you know it's it's a weird.
SPEAKER_01I'm really embarrassed about about showing off, but come and have a look and tell me it's nice. Oh.
SPEAKER_03Sorry about that. Sounds fun at my end. Yeah, no, it's mine. I'm up in the loft. Anyway, so so yes, it's been very handy to be uh uh going away every weekend uh and playing with my kit and meeting people, seeing friends, catching up, uh testing out some of those because it's still quite cold on an evening. Yeah, you know, I mean it's not Arctic or anything, but you know, making sure that we've got that. I've tested out uh cooking breakfast on the Dollam uh uh plate.
SPEAKER_01Nice, nice. You say it's not it's not cold out. I've had to scrape the car for the last few mornings, so it's it is just your driving, Tim. It's because I'm drinking at eight in the morning.
SPEAKER_06Allegedly, allegedly.
SPEAKER_02I can neither confirm nor deny, but Tim might be being breathlise tomorrow at work.
SPEAKER_06Oh my god, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
SPEAKER_01The day this goes out tomorrow is actually uh I'll already be in a failed. Please don't breathalyze me because uh I I will have been drinking the night before. You will fail.
SPEAKER_03Or will it be a fail, Tim, or will it be a succeed?
SPEAKER_01I won't be driving, that's for sure.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, driving them beers down your neck.
SPEAKER_01Oh dear, no. I can't do 8am drinking. That's um yeah. Well, the only time you can do eight uh 8 a.m. drinking is when you're in an airport because airports time doesn't count, and you've got to have a pre-flight drink, haven't you?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, no, of course. Um, unless you're flying with somebody that's tea totaling, they frown upon it. Oh god. I've had some funny looks for from her next door.
SPEAKER_01That's because you you like you like to travel dressed as a pilot, don't you? So you get loads of funny looks getting drunk.
SPEAKER_04Imagine some funny shit in an airport. Travel, please.
SPEAKER_01I like to go down to the local dressed as a paramedic. You get through to the bar really quick, and then everyone looks at you a bit funny when you just get smashed.
SPEAKER_05Brilliant. Oh, how funny would that be? Which flight you want? Doing it with your mate, and then going, which plane are we flying?
SPEAKER_01And just so going up to the gate, staggering like with a bag of duty free clinking. You know, when we do the Sweden trip, we gotta we gotta travel there dressed as pilots. Oh, funny.
SPEAKER_05That's the funniest. Oh, brilliant.
SPEAKER_01Um I don't know what we're talking about. So you um you've you've been camping this weekend. Tell us what you got up to this weekend. You I uh I sadly couldn't join you. I've got a blue hand. Um I sadly couldn't join you, but um you were there with uh with the fixer, Mr. Marfles.
SPEAKER_03Yes, uh he uh he gave us some dates, and I I was like, yeah, I'm doing it. Uh we went off to the beautiful fire and stars again. Uh I tell you what, that place is gonna get rammed. Uh I'm glad it's been sort of early springtime. There's not many people there, but it has got busier. I've been about four times this year already. Wow. They just opened a sauna on the site.
SPEAKER_01Wow, nice.
SPEAKER_03They've got a coffee shop coming a little bit later in the year. Uh, they've got a good shop there as well. And yeah, they're opening up more and more pitches, but I think it's just gonna be busy, busy, busy there. Um, so I was glad to get in. It rained a bit the first night, so it was a bit muddy. Uh, but then it was beautiful on both Saturday and Sunday, dried it out, and we got to play with some kit. Uh had a uh look at the tent that um we'd been given that was a prototype that we were going to take to the bar to barn, um, and we couldn't get the damn thing up. It yeah, there's a reason it was a prototype, it didn't work.
SPEAKER_01Really, really interesting though, to get get your hands on a tent that never went into production because it had problems, and um, you know, because that never that never happens, you know. It's um it's you it's cool to get your hands on some something that's literally one of a kind that that nobody else in the world has, and um, and you just got to get a bit of a play with it. It's um so what what's the plan with it? What you're gonna do?
SPEAKER_03Well, we you and I have been talking for a while about you know those weekends that you've got planned, it's been in the book for ages, and then you know, lo and behold, it's gonna piss it down. Yeah, yeah. Um, and so this is uh well, it's a canvas tent, and it had an inner ditch in the inner, and just gonna keep the canvas on the outside, and it has a front um that was uh that would zip up like almost like a TP tent. Okay, it went down on the diagonal to the floor on kind of three sides of it, and then one side was open. Um and in the middle of the back side kind of thing, there's a zip where you know you you would go in and out of the tent. So you had excess access both sides.
SPEAKER_01We just to be clear, we're still talking about tents and not those leather trousers you bought. Yeah. In Amsterdam.
SPEAKER_03Listen, don't aware uh uh I know I'm sticking to it. They're good for camping them. They go anywhere, trousers. I'll leave the imaginations to everybody. I'm only going with that, I'm only joking, listeners. Um but anyway, yeah. So um, yeah, but the thought is really that this 10 it had low eaves, it didn't have really good standard unless you were just by uh the ridge of it. It kind of needs a ridge pole as well. I think the updated version that they did try and put into production has a ridge pole. So I'm gonna mess around with that, and I think I'm gonna take the uh height up maybe to uh get some new poles and push it up and just see.
SPEAKER_01Make it like a big, massive, high floating tarp that you can sit under.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and then at one end put a stove jack. So if it's gonna rain, you've got this warm under a tarp area that everybody can just get under.
SPEAKER_01Cool. No, I really like that idea. I like that idea. It's um we'll have to get together and um try and build it, make it happen.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I think so. I'll uh try and get some uh some plans. Might even uh put as we showed you a video really, didn't we? So I've got a video of it, but yeah, it just didn't work as a tent. And certainly what we were trying to do was give it away at the you know, trade it, or if somebody didn't trade for it, we were then gonna give it to the auction at the end of it. So unfortunately, that's not going to happen, but we're gonna have some fun playing with some kits instead, and that's um that's what it's all about at the end of the day, isn't it?
SPEAKER_01It's just playing with toys. We're just big big boys playing with expensive toys.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, so I got to play with some new kit. Uh so the uh Dallum uh fire it's like a it's like a griddle plate, isn't it?
SPEAKER_01So it's on a tripod leg that's um so three legs that screw screw off, sits in the fire. It's um it's carbon steel, so it's not cast iron, so it's designed to be ultra light. If you go on our socials from uh from when we were at um outdoor and social, we met the the Tobias there, great guy from Darlem, and um and he uh there's there's videos of us cooking steak on it and talking about it.
SPEAKER_03It's uh but eight so so this was my yeah, this was my bit of right, well, instead of getting a stove out, we had a fire more or less 24 hours a day. So we uh we got that out on the first morning, uh, did eggs, bacon, and sausages, not in that order. Um sausages first, then the bacon, then the eggs, and yeah, it was it was just excellent, really, really enjoyed it and really good for you know when you're sharing kind of breakfast, really, which we were. Uh so really like that. Uh had pizza on a night. Um Richard did uh a curry the first night because I got there quite late because I was working, so yeah, really, really good play around with kit, play around with uh food, and yeah, sort of just enjoyed having my setup really.
SPEAKER_01And um on the back of last week's episode about inflatable tents, you took you took your inflatable, your um what's it called, the Poseidon?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it's um really really turning out to be one of my favourite tents.
SPEAKER_01Wow, wow arguably one of your cheapest tents.
SPEAKER_03Uh it is, yeah. Um and and and that's that's the Yorkiness uh that comes out of me. I have been lusting after various other tents that are similar to other tents that I've got, and this was just a little bit different. So you can see that on the socials. It took me two minutes 30 seconds to pump the thing up. There seems to be a lot of chat at the minute around airbeam tents and what they do and what they don't do. Um, hopefully, last week's episode, go and listen to it. You can have a little bit of the myth busting that we were trying to do, and so far it's performed exactly as expected, considering it's a cheap AliExpress tent.
SPEAKER_01No, it's um it's a cracking piece of kit. I I loved seeing it when you brought it to Edale. Uh really surprised by the size of it, but super surprised by how how quickly it went up and how stable it was. I um you've really um you've really kind of sold air beams to me. I um interestingly last week we did a we did Tim's tent poll um of what uh what might be Tim's next tent, and uh we stuck that on the socials and the the winner was the uh the Vango Sierra TC, the Air 300. In the in the listeners, in the listener's mind, that was that was the winner. I um, you know, I don't have to listen to you. But it is is kind of my winner as well. So um, you know, watch this space, watch this space to see what happens if I uh manage to save up enough pennies.
SPEAKER_03Well, I think um yeah, I think what was really evident um is you and I I thought this right from the start, really. You threw in the Winnerwell uh tent, which I think is a cracking tent if you compare it to the tent TP, say, of a similar ilk, it's half the price of a tent TP for uh you get so much more um with the Winnerwell. Uh it's quite adjustable. Uh it's actually set for uh the stoves that Winnerwell do, and certainly the air venting stoves that they do, uh, and it is just very adjustable. And you compare that to the basic range of tent TP, which will cost you a lot more. Uh I think it's just a cracking tent. But it's a TP tent, it's a wigwam, and we all know that you know you you put it in there just because it fits your stove.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, and that that is the reason because it's it's made for the Mars fire, you know, it is absolutely designed and made and built around the Mars fire, which is a great stove, and having the tent that kind of goes with it just feels right because you've got to have the double vent and everything else, and it and it just feels right. But I've also you know, a few listeners pointed out I've moaned quite a lot about TP tents and how much wasted space there is, so it would get on my nerves, you know.
SPEAKER_03It just would. You you'd make the best of it because you do, you set up a really good campsite, uh, but I I do think I think it's a cracking tent. Uh, I think there's people that are not uh annoyed about that on TP tents and root ground tents, so you know they they would go with it. Um yeah, you know, I think uh yeah, it was an interesting thing, uh, but I think you were plumbing more towards the polymer uh or Pamolly um to start with. I think you might have influenced uh so you've you've put that out there into the ether, and my friend Chris has sent me uh a thing we went, goddamn Tim, I really like that Pamoly tent.
SPEAKER_01It's bloody lovely, isn't it? For for and the reason that's in there is because it's a dedicated hot tent. Pamolli make really great hot tents. Yes, they don't make it in canvas, which I wish it was in canvas, but you know, it isn't in canvas. Um, it's super lightweight because it's not canvas. You know, I'm looking for something to replace my three-metre bell tent. So a hot tent that I can use as a one-person tent that will give me the space, you know, and and it it just ticks all of those boxes, and the fact it's under 300 pounds, you know, it's it's a great tent for what is 280 pounds, uh 300 and some dollars. It's um an absolutely brilliant tent. It's already got the stove jack fitted, the stove would go perfectly at one end, sleep at the other, you get your kitchen stuff in the middle. It's a it's a great tent. It's got it's got semi-geodesic tones to it, stands up a bit tall to really stand up to really high wind, but it it's it's a it's a really interesting pole setup in it. I just think bloody lovely tent, that really bloody lovely tent.
SPEAKER_03And um and I I don't disagree with you. How do you feel about not having a floor in a tent?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I'm always you know, you've said it a number of times. Winter, it's fine, there's no creepy crawlies, the ground tends to be pretty hard. Um, but if I took that to Fire and Stars at the moment where it's a bit muddy, it'd just be carnage inside of there. I um, you know, I you couldn't put anything on the floor. I'd have to, I'd have to get a tarp down. That would annoy me a bit because it would never fit properly. So it's um yeah, I I I think I'd I would fall out of love with it for its negative points quite quickly. Um and uh so yeah, so yeah, it's um it's a beautiful looking tent. If it had a floor in it, I'd be all over that tent. If they put a floor in the bottom of that, that would be an incredible tent.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it would add to the weight though, wouldn't it? It would be because you don't put a lightweight floor in something like that.
SPEAKER_01You put uh a heavyweight uh but you know, I'm not in nobody's in nobody's world are they carrying that on their back up a mountain. It's still too heavy for that. So it's a car camping tent. Uh and you know, whatever whatever they do to it, you know. But if they did put a floor into it, yes, it would be heavier, therefore it would be more expensive, but it would still be a really great tent and would be far cheaper than both the Vango and the um and the winner well, which were comparative prices, you know, in the 900 pound range.
SPEAKER_03Right, yeah, yeah. Um, yeah, so similarly to that, uh my airbeam tent doesn't have a floor in it. Yeah. And thank thankfully, my um under my robin's uh footprint fits it exactly. Wow. Um there's still obviously it's not. A Soning thing, so um it's just one of those things, but I I think because I do winter camp and what have you, I'm less bothered about it these days than I once was. Um I do take uh uh that footprint. I am thinking there's peg out points and elastic uh so that you can get hooks to pin it onto the bottom of the tent, and there's also a snow skirt, which means you can tuck that under it. Um so it'll all kind of work, and I I'm I'm less uh bothered about it, but you know, hey, we're talking about very specific things on our setup, but hopefully, you know, if you're thinking about tents, this helps you. Um and hopefully it's this time of year that you are thinking about tents. Everybody wants something new.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, they do, they do, and there are some bargains out there. There are um there are some some manufacturers that are doing sort of spring sales at the moment, so it's it's worth if you're if you're in the market and you missed the shows from earlier this year where the real bargains were, you know, there's still some things out there if you um if you go looking.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah, I think there really is. And I keep on thinking that I want to uh buy some bits and pieces, and then I realised that actually I do have all those bits and pieces. So, say for the um canvas tent that we set up that I want to try and do something with, I do have two meter 40 poles that I could use in from another tent, but that way lies a little bit of danger, I think, because okay, do I need lots and lots of different tools to uh poles and various other things, or can I just use the same poles from tent to tent to tent? And that way I think there's danger that you get somewhere and you go, Oh, I forgot to bring the poles that yeah or in the other tent. Yeah, or you end up bringing two tents to make sure you don't do that.
SPEAKER_01Uh it's that is the danger because I I have that issue because I've I've taken all my tent pegs out of my tents, and I just I bought one big pack of massive heavy-duty tent pegs, and I take that bag with me. You just gotta remember to take the bag. It's um, you know, I'm packing up today for this coming weekend, and um, and I kind of I I laid everything out in the garage of what I'm taking equipment wise. I'm like, yeah, everything's there. And walking out of the garage, I walked past my my tent uh my tent uh my um my peg bag and I was like, oh, I think I might need that. It's um so I went and uh went and added that to the pile. That would have been really quite annoying if I'd have got there, and then going round to everybody else going, has anyone got like a couple of pegs I could borrow? You got you got a couple more, yeah.
SPEAKER_03I mean, we lose our credibility really quickly then, Tim.
SPEAKER_01We don't we don't have credibility. What are you talking about?
SPEAKER_03Not with the guys that we're going with this weekend, not at all, not all. Loving it, the uh the oldest of the best friends, and uh nobody else get bent out of shape there, but we've known these guys for 35 years. Um what I hear you say, listeners, you're not that old, are you?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, right. Somebody say it, please. Yeah, I uh I think I I first met them when I was 15, so yeah, it is uh literally fifth uh 35 years ago. So um yeah, bonkers, really that very, very bonkers.
SPEAKER_03Um, and like uh good friends can do, they can make you feel uh brilliant and uh yeah, not so brilliant, all in one go, all in one sentence.
SPEAKER_01You know, I think that's a northern thing, isn't it? That um we can't ever let people get above themselves. So uh so you know it's going to be a weekend of us of us being reminded what our place is.
SPEAKER_03You might have a good tent, but you know, yeah, you left your tent pegs at home. I see you've left the top button of your trousers undone because you don't fit them anymore. We laugh because we know it happens.
SPEAKER_01I'm not wearing my fall ravens now because I can't currently do them up fully. I've put a little bit of you know comfort wear on. Well, uh I'll lose it again.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I can't uh go drinking three weekend three weekends, uh, or camping three weekends. You see, camping or drinking, I'm calling it drinking. Maybe camping's just my vehicle to go drinking.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you call it camping, I call it drinking, drinking, camping, call it a session in the field. Maybe that's what we should have called this podcast.
SPEAKER_03Uh session in the field.
unknownYes.
SPEAKER_03Um, anyway, we have digressed and uh gone over a couple of bits and pieces. Uh, there is a lot of chat to my last uh weekend camping and a few purchases that people have made. Uh, you'll find that find us on uh social medias like Instagram and Facebook, and there's a dedicated group. So come and join, come and share, uh, and like, subscribe, all of those things.
SPEAKER_01It really helps. Yeah, absolutely. Come and um come and join the fun. It's um what are what are we talking about this week, Ed?
SPEAKER_03Well, so this week is an actual live conversation with you and me, Tim. Oh my god, yeah, I know. Uh have I built it up too much now?
SPEAKER_01Just just for me, it made it sound like every other episode. Well, people fast forward, they're only here for the laughs, aren't they? Somebody said that to me at work this week. They went, Oh, I listened to your podcast finally. And I kept like skipping through, and all it was was you and your brother laughing, but you just sound the same. I went, Yeah, we've heard that before.
SPEAKER_03You you sound the same, like you know, we're proper schizophrenic kind of it's just one person.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I did say that. I mean, obviously, you know, I work with mental health stuff, so I did kind of say it is just one of us. We're just yeah, we're just pretending I don't actually have a brother.
SPEAKER_03Do you know how difficult it is to have a conversation with yourself? That back and forth is not easy to do, you know.
SPEAKER_06Oh dear.
SPEAKER_03Um, so yes, so we are going camping this weekend, and um, so we want to invite you customer, uh your you listeners into the fact that we need to sort out who's driving because we want to share. We're going quite a distance, it's four hours away for me, three and a half for Tim. We're going up to Cumbria, so it's a bit of a road trip, brilliant. And uh you sent me a text last night to say, Did you want to uh share the petrol? Um but mind you can't put all your van stuff in my car. And and so the dilemma I've now got, and uh of which you've got is we're going to a campsite, we're sharing there's five of us on two pitches, uh so I don't think we can take massive tents, uh, and then it's about well, actually, what do we want to take? Um will will we one fit it into your car and two take the things that are important to either of us when we go camping with people?
SPEAKER_01That's the thing, because there's also the expectation of we are the casual camping podcast, they do expect us to bring the toys, and um but it's you know the the first consideration at the moment is um fuel price has just gone through the roof, and and you know, a a three and a half, four hour journey there and then back is gonna cost a lot of pennies, it's gonna it's gonna cost a lot of money, and um and it'll be worth it because we'll have a great time. But it's um my first my first thought was hey, do you want a car share and and share the fuel cost of this?
SPEAKER_03Um sounds perfect perfectly uh legitimate to do, you know. I'm a Yorkshireman Tim, just like you. I was like, Well, that sounds sensible, and you know, what kind offer? And then the things go to me to go, oh actually, will we even get your cool box and my cool box in the car with tents?
SPEAKER_01You know, that's the thing beers first, but but then it starts beers before biverwax.
SPEAKER_02I'm on fire today. Oh dear.
SPEAKER_03Oh brilliant, Tim will have it on a t-shirt soon, I'm sure.
SPEAKER_01You might have snitches get stitches. I've got beers before biver wax.
SPEAKER_05I used that today. Did you?
SPEAKER_03Snitches get stitches. Somebody cut themselves at work, and I was like, accident book snitches get stitches.
SPEAKER_01I didn't stab you, I didn't stab you. I hope you wrote that in the accident book.
SPEAKER_03Oh dear. Um so so yeah, um, so you know, you're kind of brilliant. Um, but then I so now I'm thinking that the tent that I was going to take I now can't take because it's quite big. I was gonna take the uh Berkham Wills lovely, lovely, lovely swag, uh, and have it off the ground, on the bed, have my robin's tarp over it. I've got a really lovely setup, and I think you know what? No, uh, I can't. That'll be too I my airbeam tent would give me much more space, usable space and stuff. Um it'll be smaller even though I'm taking uh an air mattress and an uh an under bed base as well. It'll still be smaller than taking the uh swag.
SPEAKER_01Wow, that's really interesting. I I do think there'll be room for the swag because I've so I've decided I'm I uh because of this dilemma. One, I don't really want to load the car up to its to the gunnels because it's uh it'll weigh a ton and we're then gonna use more fuel. So we're you know, we're if we're going a long way, we kind of have to think a little bit lighter. Um, and then literally just the fact of fitting it all in. Obviously, half the car's gonna be filled with firewood because we're gonna need fire. Um, so so then I was just thinking, well, okay.
SPEAKER_03Tim Shush.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03We've got to use the sights, and we're gonna do that, aren't we?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, oh look, I've got some pallet wood in my pit that I bought from the site.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. Mine looks like a wardrobe. All of them chairs that went up really well that you had the last time. They were great. I'm going we're going back to that building tomorrow. I'm gonna see if they got anything else. Brilliant. No, it's uh it is it is um so we're probably helped in a little bit in we're going to a site that uh does one of the things that really annoys us the most is um you're only allowed to buy our wood. You got to buy our wood, and it'll be crap wood. Um, so we're we're gonna buy a bag off them and then we'll we'll you know, we might use some of our own. But they're also saying you can only use their fire pits. So actually, we can't take a fire pit. It's um so I'm now thinking, well, that saves a lot of weight and a lot of space if we're not taking fire pits. Um yes, we'll take some wood, but if I'm not doing that, then you know what I would normally take for two nights is the is a three-metre bell and a stove and everything else that goes with it, and a big camp bed and all of that stuff, like you were saying with the with the swag. All of that takes up masses of room. Whereas I've I've pivoted completely, and I'm gonna take I'm gonna take my northways tent, a tarp over it. I am gonna take a kitchen station, but that folds down pretty small. You know, my orange, orange kitchen station that you got me. Means I don't need a stove, means I don't need a a fire pit, there's there's don't need the big camp bed. There's a lot, there's a lot of big chunky and heavy stuff that actually I can I can leave at home. And for you and I, it's it's a fast and light weekend, isn't it? Really?
SPEAKER_03Well, yeah, I mean, uh you uh and and the dilemma that I've got with that then is because I get a great deal of fun out of just getting my stuff out, getting my toys out, and uh having last weekend uh and thought, oh yeah, I'm thinking ahead to the Bushcraft show, I'm thinking ahead to going away uh to Wales uh in a couple of weeks' time, and oh yeah, this would be nice, oh that could do with adjusting, oh could this could be um and so there's a dilemma there for me to go uh because I don't have a specific fast and light small tent anymore because I wasn't using it, I was using the swag on those kind of uh events, um and now uh the air beam is lovely, um, which I'm gonna go with, but then I also think if I'm just camping in a big square framed box, am I not just in a warehouse?
SPEAKER_05You know, so I want so well, what are the other things that could dress this little warehouse with that makes me feel? Can I take a rug? Well, Tim let me take a rug.
SPEAKER_01And and while you say that you fill my car with soft furnishings, is what you're saying.
SPEAKER_03I'm saying this is the dilemma. I know I've got a problem, but this is the dilemma. And I was like, I can just imagine turning up at yours, like you know, with my van full, which I haven't even unpacked because I was thinking I'm taking most of this with me. Um, but then I I was thinking, well, actually, it'll be like the scales, the sword of Damocles before Tim blows his top, going, What are you fucking doing?
SPEAKER_01Not I've literally I've I've pared it down to the bone so that we can get there without it costing us a fortune, and you've filled my whole car with all your stuff.
SPEAKER_05So, this is what I mean about the dilemma.
SPEAKER_01Because it's great head, but look at mine. I'm in a pivot back.
SPEAKER_03Tim calls himself a casual camping podcast host, does he? I'm not very casual today.
SPEAKER_05Is he going making or something?
SPEAKER_03But so uh, and a little more detail about what we're doing. So we've been really good. Uh, it's a friend's 50th, so happy 50th to Glenn. Uh, we're really looking forward to it, but we've all been really good about saying, right, okay, there's five of us the first night, six of us the second, who's doing what? There's a few meals that we need to do, and you've got the meal on the first night, I think.
SPEAKER_01I have, I have. So which actually is is helping me. Yeah, as everybody knows, I drink warm beer. Um it's not warm beer, but I don't need it to be ice cold. It's actually gonna be get down to one degree overnight. So I'm thinking if I've got the meal on the first night, which is gonna be chicken chorizo risotto, a recipe from the absolute brilliant Tom from Off the Beaten Pot. I um sorry, I'm I'm eating a chocolate, I do apologise, but it's really bloody lovely. It's uh white chocolate and like raspberry. It's really lovely. Focus, Tim. Focus what it what it means is I don't need to put a cool box in the car. Because actually, I don't need any I don't need to chill anything, because all of my food will come out of the fridge when we set off. I'll cook it that night, it's gonna be absolutely fine. And uh if I'm not needing to keep beers really cold, you know, like you know, really, really cold, because you know, one degree centigrade overnight is gonna keep my beers really cold. You know, you don't need to put them in your fridge at home, it's like four or five degrees centigrade, you know. You really don't need to have a cool box full of ice. Um, so uh so actually I I don't need to put a cool box in there, which is one really heavy and two massive. I've got two cool boxes. I've got my Dometic, I've got my Stanley, they're both amazing, they're both massive pieces of kit. So if they're not in there, literally, you know, I'm really pairing for me, I'm really paring stuff down to the basics. I do think you'll have the space for the for the Birk and Will swag.
SPEAKER_03It's um yeah, but but as you say, you know, we're we're talking about weight now. So my other dilemma is I'm cooking a leg of lamb on the Saturday. Therefore, there's salad, there's there's quite a lot, and my cool box. Uh, you're right about the beers and stuff. I went camping a couple of weeks ago, and I put I chilled down my beers, got some ice, put it in the thing, and it was about freezing on the night, and I'm sat there around a fire drinking ice cold beers, and it just didn't need to be. Um, you know, they need to be chilled maybe, but not ice cold. Um, and and that's the thing. And this weekend I chilled them, put them in the cooler, they kept cold all weekend. Yeah, yeah. You know, just chilled. It wasn't too, you know, that where you know you can't hold the can because it's so freezing cold, or you need gloves on and stuff.
SPEAKER_01You know, I make sure I take an insulated point pot now, because um because actually, in the if the beer's out of the cool box, they're so bloody cold you can't hold on to them. And it's like you don't need beer that cold unless it's like the hottest summer day.
SPEAKER_03It's uh you know I I can uh hear Laird over in America going, no, he's wrong. You have a different temperature there, Laird. Just uh just be aware of it. Um it's actually he's actually just pressing pressing the horn on his on his Winnebago, it's just going but um so yeah, so I've got stuff that I need to keep as well as my beer, as well as actually I'm doing a leg of lamb, so I need to take quite a lot of stuff with me. I actually, you know, the pots that that goes in, um, you know, the equipment and all the stuff that help me get pots on and off the fire, make sure it's all right, be able to serve it. So, you know, table and plates and and other things. So mine feels quite a lot. Um so yeah, you know, I don't I don't know.
SPEAKER_01Um I I have thought about you with your Legolam because I did know that you were doing that, and I was thinking if we've got to use their fire pits, we don't know if your your pot is going to be able to sit on their fire pit with coals and stuff. So I've um I I recently bought one of those um those metal things with three holes in it and a chain hanging down so that you can go and get some sticks and make your own tripod because I do have a tripod, I've got a uh an iron tripod, but again, that weighs an absolute ton. So I recently bought one of those simple metal metal triangle things with three holes in it, and I thought, well, we could always, if you need to suspend it, we can go and find three decent sized sticks, can't we? And uh and get this to a right height and suspend it over the fire.
SPEAKER_03Uh yeah, you know, it's um yeah, not knowing what we're cooking on and stuff. I don't, you know, I'm I'm not necessarily uh I think I think we can do that quite easily. It's uh it's not gonna be a problem. But like I say, I just I do need to take more stuff, and that's for the second day, so I yeah. Um so yeah, I I'm no further. Further forward with sorting that out, I think I am gonna go with the uh the airbeam tent. I'm I'm still gonna take that. I think it's um probably less hassle and less space and certainly lighter. Um so yeah, it is just uh a very one and done kind of thing with the Birk and Wills, uh, which I absolutely love, but I think it is just bigger and it'll give us a bit more space, really.
SPEAKER_01So yeah, give you that standing up space, won't it, that's um that that we we've talked about previously on our on our you know stand-up tent episode. It's yeah, it is it is nice. I'm gonna be crawling in and out of a of a little hiking tent, but um you know I'm younger than you, I can get away with it.
SPEAKER_03Okay, Tim. Here here's the thing then. Go on then. Do you do you want to share?
SPEAKER_01Well, it's funny, me or the half said, why don't you just take the four-metre bell tent and you and Aidy share? And uh and we just take one, and then she said she said you could take the stove then, and you're cutting down everything, and all Aidie needs to bring is his cool box, is um uh and his and his bed set up. And I thought, that's not a bad idea, but actually, we're going away for a couple of nights, and and you know, we've said before, we do like to it is nice to have your own space, isn't it? It is nice to have a dedicated space. And I know Glenn's got a couple of pitches, but I'm not sure how big they are. Yeah, yeah. The four meter four meter bell is a monster, it's um it takes up a lot of space, and um, I know he's bringing he's bringing his bell tent, which is gonna be really great to see. His bell tent and his and his wood burning stove. I think he wanted me to bring mine as well because you know we could have a comparison and stuff, but um it's it's more the distance than anything else. So so yeah, I mean your offers your offers great. I um I I think your tent's brilliant. Are you gonna put the awning up?
SPEAKER_03Um well once again, uh you know, we we're sharing sights, they're gonna put us at one end. Do we have enough space for it? Yeah, is that something that I'm just bringing along? I didn't take it last weekend and it was lovely. Um, you know, uh pitched out uh the awning, the door, uh, and it it yeah, it worked really, really well.
SPEAKER_01So I am bringing a tarp and my poles because I do want it's not meant to rain, but I do want my kitchen station's gonna have to be sort of freestanding because obviously it doesn't fit in a hiking tent. So I do want a sort of cover over that just in case it does if we do get a shower passing through. But um I think I think I want my own space and and you know nothing against you, but you know, yeah, no, uh completely understand.
SPEAKER_03We've not shared a bedroom for a long time, Tim. You know, actually, we did when I got the snow peak one. You came over and spent anything. Yeah, yeah. And and we uh we shared a bedroom when we went to uh Edinburgh Fringe, yes, yeah, of course in the Airbnb, but you know, yeah, but you know, we're we're adults, you know, there's only uh uh so much uh of that, and you know, we all like our own stuff, you know. It it's then going, Oh well, I'm uh um on somebody in somebody else's kit. So the other thing, and listeners, if you're wanting us to get to the end and go, all right, you're gonna have to see the pictures next week of what actually happened, because I don't think it's something that we're going to agree now, which we're talking through some of the deliberations that we've got.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Um, so the other deliberation is uh we go in my van, which has more space um instead of your car, um, and then I will take whatever I want to take, um, and you can throw your stuff in on top of uh because it's got got more space.
SPEAKER_01So um there is there is that, there is that. It's um yeah, I hadn't even thought of that. That's probably a more sensible idea, but then it still comes down to the weight.
SPEAKER_03Um and the it does, but it's you know, whatever the weight is um it's a long journey, it's gonna be uh what is it? It's uh 180 miles there, 180 miles back, um for me. So that is essentially a tank of petrol. That's 30 to 40 quid each. So, you know, what that's roughly going to be, and I think the deliberation on weight won't even save you a five pounds.
SPEAKER_01So no, true, true. Well, you know, because obviously I'm cutting all my equipment down, but I'm putting you in the car, so that kind of balances everything.
SPEAKER_03Oh, we we're going we're going there, are we? You're just easing me in before we meet Glenn and he he oh he starts off with uh god yeah, yeah. Let's let's I wouldn't say I'm very sensitive about my weight until somebody really goes, Well, my heck, oh my god. Like, yeah, all right, you know, uh for the last 10 years I've been about the same weight.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. I'm only joking. I'm only joking. I know, I know sometimes that can be a bit of a bit of a running joke that gets a little tired a bit quick.
SPEAKER_03It's um listen, if I was bothered about it, I'd do something about it, but you know, I'd yeah, I like my beer and I like my chocolate. What can you do? But not not not at the same time.
SPEAKER_05Oh you won't like one of those chocolate stouts, then it's it's like do not don't spoil, don't ruin both things in one glass.
SPEAKER_03I'll stick my beer until I go to bed and then I find that stash of chocolate biscuits that I've got and then eat them and get indigestion and wake up in the middle of the night.
SPEAKER_05It's a fail-safe thing that I've done for years, okay? I just need something sweet after uh oh god.
SPEAKER_01Well, yeah, I'm I'm sitting here with a bowl of all sorts of stuff. It's um yeah, none of it's mine, but I'm stealing it.
SPEAKER_03So uh so yeah, so I I think that's the other thing, and the deliberation then really just comes down to um we're going to a new site there there's normally two people per pitch. There's five of us going, so they're putting us on two pitches. Uh the thing about the wood, so it's a greener camping club, uh greener camping site, which they've got to be ethical, so actually transporting wood into them and things like that. It's a really good thing that um uh some campsites are doing. That's the same thing with uh Thai Park in Wheels that I like to go to. Yeah, the these are making sure that they are re-wilding and looking after their environments and stuff, so you know we should support that by not taking our wood. Uh, and certainly when I go to Thai Park, he's got an axe and a chopping barn, so you can go chop your own wood. It's pretty good. That's cool.
SPEAKER_01That's a really that's a really cool thing, and it's a good price normally.
SPEAKER_03So um, so yeah. Yeah, I'm winking at Tim. There'll still be some pallet wood in there, don't worry. We're not made of wood, you know, or money.
SPEAKER_01It's just it's an interesting dilemma, isn't it? That that you know, one because we're we're having to go such a distance, but because actually the cost of of fuel is so high, it is just seriously making us think about how can we still have the adventure, how can we still enjoy it, but we've really got to think about what we're taking and how we're getting there. So car sharing is is you know number one on the list. But yeah, the the the active car sharing just means we got to take half as much stuff, and you know, and for us that that's uh a really difficult that's really hard, and for a lot of our listeners, you know, we um you know a lot of our listeners have got a massive amount of of uh of kits. And um yeah, Joe, we're talking about you, Joe. We are talking about Joe. She uh she's she's had a lottery win somewhere, I'm sure of it. She's you know, you know, she won't tell anyone that but there'll be signs, yeah. She's on the spend, she's got more camping equipment than you had. She's at the lottery win.
SPEAKER_03Uh yeah, I'm very, very jealous uh about that. Um, but but it is, you know, and and okay, we're going uh quite a distance, but you know, from the environmental point of view, car sharing is always a good thing. Yeah, a lot of campsites are seeing that there's more cars turning up for fewer people because people are meeting there, so you know, think about it. I did see um oh, where I went in Wales where we had the boat on the lake and the thing. Um that site anyway. If you get the train to some of those, they give you a 75% voucher off your next uh walk.
SPEAKER_01Wow, that's a brilliant, absolutely brilliant idea. And um, you know, we talk about the the um the campsites in E-Dale and going to E-Dale and um uh in the Peak district, and it's um uh you know, train station there, a lot of a lot of people turn up there and um on on the train. It's there are lots and lots of really amazing places and amazing sites that you can get to on public transport. We'd have a hell of a time carrying even our pared-down stuff on on public transport, but it's it's an option, isn't it? It's an option.
SPEAKER_03Well, how have we got ourselves into a spiral? And this is something we've been asking ourselves generally uh over the last few weeks about sometimes just being overfaced, outfaced by what we've got. One putting it up, but two taking it down, taking it down with a hangover, you know. That's half the problem. Um, but we're not gonna give up drinking, don't worry.
SPEAKER_01I am but I am looking forward to actually going with slightly less kit and um and seeing what's like what that's like what what that's what's that no seeing seeing how I do because the following the following weekend I'm putting my gear on a plane and flying somewhere and having a wild camp. So I've really got to think about it for for the next episode. But that will you know that's a little um insight into what's coming in the next couple of weeks, it's um from an episode. But um that's gonna be that's gonna be really tricky.
SPEAKER_03Well, it's gonna be tricky, but I think it's we've got very comfortable with our car camping, and we've got to get the enjoyment of having less stuff, but it being, you know, really out there, um, so that you, you know, you can enjoy it that you're comfortable, that you know that it's not gonna be your best um most comfortable night's sleep or or whatever, but it's still gonna be cracking, and you've got to still take that ethos that you're out, you're out in the wild, you're under the stars for the night, yeah in canvas or nylon or whatever it is, and you've got a full belly and you're nice and warm. Yeah, that should be the you know the prerequisite of all of it. So maybe that's what I'll take away with when I'm starting to put things in the van.
SPEAKER_01So, yeah, and and you know, we've said all along, you know, camping, yes, we we do solo camping trips, but by far and away, the best camping trips are when we meet up with mates and we just sit in a field and we catch up with people that we haven't been around for ages. That's the best piece of camping equipment you can take with you.
SPEAKER_03Yep, yeah, yeah, it really is, and that's what I'm looking forward to. I uh obviously don't want to let people down with the uh uh half cooked leg of lamb or or all those other bits. Hungry Geordies are not friendly.
SPEAKER_01No, no, no, don't forget the charcoal. We definitely there's uh you can't do a leg of lamb with a blowtorch head.
SPEAKER_03Um but that I think the other thing that is the unknown is we're going to a new site. I think if we were going to Fire and Stars or whatever, we kind of know what to expect. Yeah, don't know what we're cooking on, we don't know the space of the site, we've never been there before, uh, which is exciting. Uh, I know the standard of these kind of sites and uh um yeah, love them and love the efficacy that uh comes with them because they have to attain a certain standard to be on the greener camping uh sites. Um so yeah, you know, I think that's just that unknown of not being there. Um and the longer journey and the fuel prices, it it just gives us a dilemma. But yeah, you know, I think it's it's something that everybody should think about when they're they're going away, maybe.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. I think um I think everybody's got to at the moment because because everything's just got so expensive. And uh and the further you've got to travel for that, it's it's really got to be a thought that you're you're thinking about of can you car share, can you cut down what you're taking, can you make it more economical? And naturally then it's more environmentally friendly. And uh and if you do that a few times, well actually can you change your whole setup? Can you can you change that to be a a more um you know softer footprint when you're you're you're going out in the field?
SPEAKER_03I mean, you know, listeners will be questioning is Tim not taking his uh hammock? That would be the cheapest and lightest. I'm only fame with you, Tim.
SPEAKER_01You know, I'm still not. I if I chose to take the hammock and really cut everything down, and then you turned up with your massive snow peak tent and everything else going, oh are you just doing that? Great. Well, I thought there'd be room for this.
SPEAKER_03You saving yourself some weight, and me just going, ah, well, I'll just put that third fire pit in just in case. Yeah, Tim saved us some.
SPEAKER_01Oh no, oh no, oh dear, you said earlier on about um, you know, there's like an expectation of we we bring stuff that people can kind of see and and and we can show off. So actually, I've you know to counter that, I um I've brought uh a load of fire making stuff. So um flint and steel, I've got a bow drill that I want to try out, I've got magnifying glass, I've got a few different ways of actually, you know. We've said this before, we we could do with like a day where we're just trying to light fires with loads of different, you know, different means.
SPEAKER_03If you're gonna let other people go, we just gotta sit there and watch you do it.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, can you all say this?
SPEAKER_03We like to have a go, but Tim's not a sharer.
SPEAKER_01Everyone sit in a circle and watch me for about three hours fails with a bow drill.
SPEAKER_03They've just released a few things, uh uh an easy setup tent uh and a sleeping bag that doesn't have a zip and it's just got magnets either side of it and stuff. And you were came straight back with uh yeah, that'd affect me, pacemaker. I couldn't have it. I was like, I was just showing you it, it's not all about you. Apparently, it is all about you, but that's what people say about me as well. Oh, it's the eighty show, is it? And I was like, Yes, it is.
SPEAKER_01You're showing actors in my game. If you're showing me kiss, I am naturally going to assume you're showing me because I might want to buy it, not you know, not anything else. My my first thought was it closes with magnets. Well, that'll just shut my pacemaker down. Maybe that was your plan.
SPEAKER_03I just need to because it was north face, I just need to buy it anyway. Like, well, I'll give it a quick try. One minute one hurt with it. I think because it was nose face, that's why you thought, oh, yeah, he's sending this to me because it's nice.
SPEAKER_01Oh god. Oh yeah, insert windows shut down music. Doo doo doo doo. Funny, funny. It is all about me. Oh god. Should we go some minute mindfulness? Yes.
SPEAKER_00Welcome to the casual camping minute mindfulness. Let the sounds of nature take you back to the camping field.
SPEAKER_01Ah, that was uh that was yours recorded last weekend.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Sausages, if I'm uh not mistaken. Yes, I mean we should go back to is it sausages, rain, or uh all fire? It was sausages.
SPEAKER_03It was sausages, but the highlight of the weekend, uh oh well there was a few because it was a great weekend, um, was um catching uh Richard rinsing out his old fashioned uh glass bottle um that he brought whiskey in uh the night before at eight in the morning, and instead of throwing away the the washtower, he drank it. I was like, God, hardcore. I wish I was that hardcore.
SPEAKER_01That is that is drinking in the morning.
SPEAKER_03And um we also did cocktails, uh so uh a pink Barbie.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you sent me a picture of that, and I was like, you know what? Most of those pictures and videos you sent me all came through really pixelated because you're on fire and stars, and there's no there's no signal. The pink Barbie came through clear as anything.
SPEAKER_06What the hell is that?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I'm gonna leave it there. You all need to search what it is, but it was tasty as, and it's what the kids are drinking. So the barmaid recommended it, she said it was her favourite, and we went with it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, finish that story yourself, listeners. I've been tin. Good night.
SPEAKER_05We're not going yet, we've still got messages to do.
SPEAKER_03So, um, uh, as we mentioned a little bit within this episode, that we are going to be doing uh going to the bushcraft show uh later on in the year. We are going to be doing the bar to barn where we take cash out of the equation and hopefully people bring some nice things to swap, some other nice things for. There are some things of varying different price points, but it's really good. If you'd like to come and you don't have a ticket, you could get day tickets, you could get weekend tickets, you could get camping, you could get glamping. They have all kinds of things on there. Um, and there is a discount code as a listener to this amazing podcast, uh, which is CCP15, which gets you 15% off. So uh there. Now we can go. I've done the uh the prerequisites.
SPEAKER_01Uh the the Barterbahn's gonna be really good fun. It feels like it's it's it's getting really close now. Um, we've got a lot of stuff, you know, like you say, of varying values, but you've got to bring something to trade. So um so come along, or you'll you'll have to do a forfeit, but it'll all be in uh in good nature and it'll be a really good, a really good laugh. Come come for a chat if nothing else.
SPEAKER_03And come for a chat, and you know, see if you can make a deal, see if there's something that I think there is things that people want. It's uh you know, uh will you entice us with the things that you bring us?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. Can we um can we put loads of fake tan on you and a and a big wig? And can you be like David Dickinson?
SPEAKER_03Oh, then the cheapest chips I'm I'm thinking more of a trading post in the out uh old western stuff rather than sort of the antiques flipping whatever it is.
SPEAKER_01You've all you've always had quite a boof on hair, and for years you we used to compare you to Lawrence Llewellyn Bowen. As you've got older, it's more David Dickinson now to our North American listeners and our Australian listeners, just search David Dickinson.
SPEAKER_03I take the dick out of David Dickinson's that one.
SPEAKER_01You're dicking with the Dickinson.
SPEAKER_05Last week this is like a comedy show where last week's sort of bit of a joke came into this week's. What's going on?
SPEAKER_03Somebody said this is scripted. I challenge you to find a script.
SPEAKER_01Oh, on that high note, I'm definitely saying goodnight, it's Tim. And I've been a thanks for listening.
