Oh, that's amazing. I um I've been once and stayed in a cottage with uh with some friends, and uh and it's just somewhere that I've always wanted to go back to. And you keep going every year, don't you? It's like your favourite place.

I'll have to think of a second trick now, won't I? Oh dear. Um, yeah, so uh I do, I think it's lovely. I know you like going down to Cornwall. I've done that once or twice. I love Cornwall, I think it's it's absolutely gorgeous. But you know what? When the traffic and uh people and uh it just I've never seen it that busy in Pembrokeshire, and it's equally as beautiful with some absolutely stunning scenery. You get to see puffins if you go before July, uh, which is uh quite a nice thing. That's cool.

Yeah, absolutely brilliant, and you can see them out in uh North Yorkshire, um at Bamptam Cliffs, uh but yeah, it's like five percent of the amount of puffins compared to like the thousands that you see uh uh uh in Pembrokeshire. So yeah. So it's not just bird watching. I'm I'm I'm not necessarily a tweeter, but it's quite nice to see a lot of wildlife and be out there and going on uh cliff walks, and hopefully I'll be a little bit slimmer and leaner. Yeah, maybe not though, you know.

It is a holiday after all. Should we stop at that pub? Yeah, yeah. It's like oh, stop, stop at a cafe, have a bit of cake. Oh, it's lunchtime, stop at a pub, have a couple of pints and something to eat.

Yeah, it's um yeah, we need a good breakfast before uh we go out, uh, you know, and I'll also have had first breakfast while I wait for uh her ladyship to awaken.

Oh yeah, no, you um uh it's holiday. Calories don't count when camping. I've said it all along. It's um you know, they certainly don't count when you're on holiday. You um worry about it when you come back.

Well, yeah, unfortunately, because I'm camping quite a lot. Yeah, keep keep on kicking that diet down the uh road a little bit. Maybe 2027 will be the slimming.

We um our problem is each year we keep saying we're gonna camp more next year, and we do. We're we're succeeding at that. And uh calories don't count when camping is a real problem when you're probably camping half the weekends of the year.

It's um it's not like back at the moment, yeah, it really is. Um, so yeah, I'm so excited about that. One uh you know, camping with you, uh camping with some friends. Shocks. Uh the Bushcraft Show was fun. Uh, I really enjoyed it, but you know, it's uh I saw a post the other day that said uh where's your favourite place? And it was like, I don't have a favourite place, I have favourite people, and wherever they are, that's my favorite place.

I'm just repeating stuff that I've seen. It was probably all AI, just uh it's probably all AUP, A up. But yeah, it was uh yeah, and I thought, yeah, actually that is so true for me. I uh it's just um I like being around certain people and uh being in a field, being able to light things on fire while um you know intoxicated. It's all good.

I'm I am joking. That is not you at all. You get more and more chilled out as the evening goes on. It's um and then and then you you you hit a you hit a point where you just go, and I'm going to bed now. And uh and and off you go.

And you know what, you know what that happened, what happens when I say that? What? It means I've stopped drinking, so I need to go find some chocolate and snaffle that while I'm getting into bed. Like, you know, that's what happens. Oh because I don't I don't drink uh eat chocolate or anything while I'm uh drinking beer. Kind of puts me off, it spoils the thing. Although I have worked out that I can drink red wine and still have chocolate, and port is just fortified red wine, so yeah. I mean, you know, doesn't hold the same things, but you know, it's uh yeah, so so yeah, it's um yeah, looking forward to that. Uh I I've kind of thought what my setup is, what I'm gonna be taking. I need to be peak, peak, peak.

Um yeah, well, I've got a new tent. I've got a new tent that's still not been out. Well, at the point of recording this, it's not been out of the box. I can guarantee by the time this episode goes out, it's been out of the box. It's been out of the box, I can guarantee it. It's um because I've got such a new tent itch, I need to get that that baby out of the box. It's um so yeah, I'm I'm new tenting. I'm actually so the weekend that this goes out, I'm going, uh, I'll be camping. And um, and it's uh it's gonna have its its inaugural test run prior to taking it to the bushcraft show where I can proper show it off. And uh so yeah, I'm I'm I'm really excited for new tent at the bushcraft show.

I haven't had it out of the box yet to know what what it's actually got as um as guy lensioners. I know it's got um reflective guy lines, so I don't need to replace those, but um and uh I uh yeah I it's it's it's not even been out of the box. I've not even broken the seal of the box because I'm uh I've been so blooming busy with with last week's episode of fly camping. It's um I uh I haven't literally I haven't had the brain space to go, yeah, I need to open this properly because I've got a video here, I've got to do this, I've got to do that. Not that I'm moaning about doing any of that stuff, but it does take up a lot of time.

Yeah, I think that's the thing. Do what other um like content creators do where they get it out of the box, but you open it a certain way so that you have a look at it, and then you fold it all back in and go, Oh, look at this, kill some breeze.

Three times, yeah, it's like uh thank god we don't do uh um like walking videos and stuff like that, because that's like you walk through a field four times, you know. One, here's me approaching the field, two, there's the back of me going past the field, there's me in the middle of the field, yeah.

You know, I'd be a lot thinner, but quite quite grumpy, quite cross, yeah, quite annoyed all the time, and I'd be going, I ain't going camping again, it's just annoying.

Oh god. So um what what we um what we what we're talking about this weekend?

Well, we've talked about sort of the uh camp cooking. Uh we've done some uh really good food recently. Uh if you've not listened to those uh things, go back, have a look. Hope you're trying some uh to up your game as a campier. It doesn't always have to be burgers and it doesn't always have to be hot dogs. But now that I've said that, all I want is uh burgers and hot dogs next week.

Yeah, I gotta say I to be honest, yeah, uh there's been quite a few weeks now where we've we've really pushed the boundaries of what we're cooking. Um, and I haven't done burgers and sausages for ages, and actually, you know, a nice flame-grilled burger in the field is really tasty. So I might um yeah, yeah, I might I might for my next camping trip set some burgers and sausages.

Yeah, yeah. Um, so yeah, so uh with that in mind, we've not really talked about a kitchen setup and how useful to you know prepare a kitchen area, you know. If you are cooking, constantly going in and out of boxes, constantly uh getting stuff that you you need from somewhere else. Sometimes you're just cooking on a pot on the ground, and you're you know, and and all that doesn't really aid you in either upping your camping game uh and you know just being prepared. Like anything else, like anything else that you do, you know, if you're prepared, you're one probably your food is gonna taste better. Yeah, two, uh, because you're not searching for something in other boxes and doing all of those things, it's not gonna be burnt or or whatever. Um but also as an aside to that, I was having a discussion the other day uh with somebody who said, I've never put up a tarp. Where where do you use it? And I was like, Well, actually, I tend to use it over my cooking station, yeah. You know, so so that you've got a slight sort of angle so that rain would come off or whatever, and it tends to be at the back of that. So I thought we'd talk uh about you know kitchen setup and things like that, uh, but then also go through, you know. Actually, I know we've talked about tarps, go find that episode, but actually, you know, setting up a tarp, I think it worries a lot more people. Um, and I I'm by no means a tarp expert, you know, people that just go camping and you know camp under a tarp and know various knots. Yeah, that's not me. I'm a two poles and guy out, and that's it.

Yeah, I've I've had a I've got better with tarps, I will, I will say, the more you practice with them, the better you are. I've I've had my oldest tarp is my my little tiny Van Gogh adventure tarp. And it's and it's great because one end of it is elastic and it's designed to hug the side of a tent to literally give you a small canopy so that you can cook under it if it's raining. Um, you know, it's it's literally designed for that. And um and it's such a lot of people.

You've had that years though. I have had that donkeys years and must be 20 years, I think.

And it's literally, it's universal, it goes against any tent. It's um it's absolutely it's absolutely brilliant, and um and it's you know it's gone through it's gone through so many different adventures. It's uh as its name suggests, the adventure, the the Van Gogh Adventure Tarb. It's um but it but it is brilliant, but it is it is designed essentially for going up um hugging the side of a of a hiking tent so that you've got an outdoor area that you can then cook under if the weather turns really bad. And um and and that's what I've used it for. It's less brilliant for larger cooking stations and larger tents because it's designed for a smaller tent. So then I've I've got um I've got a couple of sort of larger rectangular sort of three meter by four metre tarps that one came with my hammock um for hammock camping.

Um but is actually a decent enough, decent enough tarp, and it's foil, it's just like um silver lined underneath to uh to try and reflect some heat back to the the um the uh the hammock, and then the other one's just a massive big um uh uh ripstop piece of ripstop fabric that's that's huge, but I I love that and that's gone through some serious storms. But I that's my primary one that I use over my kitchen setup, and I I used it a you know a couple of weeks ago when we were in Cumbria, and um and it was and it was great because I'd taken a little tent that I was just gonna crawl in and out of, but I knew I had this this um covered area in case the rain did come in that I could stand up in. You know, it was high at one end, slightly lower at the other. I'd got my kitchen fully set up in there, and it just meant I knew I was gonna be doing some proper cooking. I had a really dedicated space that I could stand up in, move around in, sit down in, properly cooking, and um and and it was it is it's a really key key part of the camp, I think.

I think I think you're right. I mean, you know, you you talk about it there, you know, if the rain comes in and stuff, it's also a really good sun shelter, you know. Okay, we don't get that much uh in the UK, but it is a good uh uh shelter for that. Uh, I think as well, uh, when you are setting up a kitchen, however your kitchen is, you know, there's some really modern ones uh that uh you can buy. There's the 1970s camp kitchen spelt with a K, camp kitchen. Um that you know, I've got one of those, I absolutely love it. Um and then I've also got my uh Snoopy kitchen, and the reason I think a tarp is good is because actually, when you've got some really good kit, you don't want it left out in the rain. Yeah, you know, and how many times have we been away where we've not had a tarp and the rain has come in in the middle of the night, and you go, Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. Great, great. Oh god, I left my tent uh my uh chair out there. Yeah, yeah, totally. You know, you go, Oh god, I'm gonna have a wet bum in the morning. Yeah, yeah. It's um that might be just me drinking too much, but you know.

It's uh no, you you're spots on. I mean, I've got I've got that, you know, great retro kitchen stand that you you um bought me for.

I've never seen another one like that. I mean it it's it's reasonably heavy, um, so it is uh a definite car camping one, but it's made out of steel, so you know.

Yeah, it's um it's absolutely brilliant, and and it's it's got a couple of shelves to it, it's then got a really great top to it that that fits perfectly my jetball genesis and is a matching colour, which it's like you know, it's like you bought it for it, even though it pre way predates the uh the Genesis. Um but then it's got a great sort of wind shield all the way around it as well. So it's it is a perfect cooking station. You've got shelves to put all your pots on and and some of your food supplies, you've then got somewhere to cook. I then personally, as I did you know, a couple of weeks ago, put a um put my my um all pro table next to it to make a bit of an L shape because then I've kind of got somewhere to prep food at the side of me, keep my ingredients there, chopping stuff up, putting, and then I literally just turn in and I'm and I'm cooking with it. And you've just got this really good sort of L-shaped cooking station that um that I'm I'm under the tarp with, and it's um I I think it works rather nicely. I think it looks I think it also because we do like to dress a camp and make it look pretty, don't we? I think it looks pretty good as well. I think it's a pretty good looking camp kitchen.

Well, I I mean I would say that, yes. I think you took it too far with the frilly pinny that you had on. No, you didn't. I was just making you laugh. Um can you know, yeah, but that that is the uh the the thing, and essentially, you know, it think about it from a safety point of view. You know, you were cut cutting up chicken, and you know, if you're then having to go into boxes and stuff, you know, you don't want to be putting kind of meat juices around your camp. You just you know, you're cooking for other people, you've got to be safe, you've got to have something to wash your hands in, um, or at least have some sanitizer so that you know, and you reduce that risk by having a good kitchen setup, whether it's uh camp kitchen, that 1970s kitchen, whether it's just a table that you know you're prepared for, and before you start, have I got everything that I need? Um so it can be everything, and I think the what the worst kind, and I think this is just me, um, but whether it resonates with anybody, um, you know, actually, we've had a couple of beers, we set two, and then cook uh just on a pot on the ground, and that just it was affecting the drinking team, bent double trying to trying to cook while I've had like a few beers down there. I was like, oof, yeah. Um so you know, and similar to you know, the chair that I've got is you know, instead of sort of all hunched up and a very straight back, mine slightly uh the angle of it helps because actually, you know, you're having a a drink, it's a nice angle to uh eat from as well. But uh, you know, I think setting up a kitchen is is a real good thing, and and then you know, putting up a tarp over it. I think I really love the elasticated um thing, the the elasticated tarp that you were talking about.

I have seen larger ones where that is the case to go over larger tents, um, but then also setting up a tarp, and sometimes you're setting up a tent by yourself is quite a difficult thing.

It's not an easy No, it's not, it's not, and again, it it's something that you need to practice. You know, there's no there's no harm in trying to set up a tarp in your own garden just to practice with it. I um I've I've found that you know, even if it's a little a little bit breezy, doing a tarp on your own can be really can be really

quite challenging and and i i've um i've even uh i'll lay it out where i think uh it needs to go and i'll actually peg two corners straight into the floor at at the corners of it and then lift the other end up one at a time with a pole and and guy rope it out and then go back to the other yeah yeah because you do need the tension otherwise it just falls all the time doesn't it yeah it does i think i think that's the bit uh that is a top tip for anybody really you know get your guy lines out however long they need to be two thirds of the way uh peg them out i had a uh nortent um tarp that they sent me and it was made of hardcore space fabric or something and it it was the flappiest little thing and it was so light that I just couldn't and you know that was a challenge and you know I struggled with it um somebody came and helped me in the end and I had to peg down one side of it just to be able to stop it from floating away because just because it's literally so light the fabric yeah the slightest break which makes makes it more difficult and then I've got um you know my uh Thorn ultra heavy tarp which is a thing of beauty it's a thing of beauty craftsmanship on that is just brilliant uh but it's uh five foot by nine foot ideal to make a little slope that protects your uh kitchen if the ring uh does come um but yeah absolutely uh uh brilliant thing and it's waxed cotton so that is the opposite where you've got quite a bit of weight to that it's got leather corner tie downs and but it's lovely you know but that that certainly suits just you know a kitchen anyway yeah it does you you you know I've seen you a few times have that over your snow peak kitchen and it's um and a little windbreak your that little um black windbreak that you've got what company's that from oh they do campervan stuff uh stitches stitches and steel stitches and steel stitches and steel stitches and steel yeah it's that's a lovely um low little um short windbreak I um I've never seen that anywhere else before and it's it is really nice that paired with your Thornhill ultra heavy um smaller top and your snow peak kitchen is just like yeah that's that's on point that's nice oh thanks thanks that's what I do it for Tim it's the praise that I do it for yeah we're both we're both as bad as each other what we're what we're doing all of this for is that we need constant praise for everything we're doing we need people to constantly feed into our narcissistic nature of that's nice you're doing really well you know where mine came from though I was camping uh oh gosh uh up in Yorkshire with some friends and I'd set my stuff out and it was uh I was a a little bit annoyed because I had to use the campsite um campfire instead of my snow peak one and I was like so I'd done this setup with uh my tent and then I put a tarp over it and uh created a nice layer there and uh this like really professional uh camper walk pie went nice setup I think I've just been chasing that ever since oh man oh man so if you're out there and you do see somebody with a nice head go tell them because go tell them because you were gonna make headowing to them yeah have you chased me chasing sorry our brain went to the same place yeah yeah oh god oh man yeah well I I maintain that you know we we we we saw Uncle Raymers at the bushcraft show two years ago and uh and one of his lines was he'd he'd as he'd come onto the site he uh he was impressed by how some of the camping setups were better than the last time he was there and of course he was talking about us well we saw him come in and the only the only tent setups that he passed coming in was yours and mine and um and and Richard Richard Marple's um orange uh bell tent it's um so bag hopper's one of one made of trousers made of trousers it's uh one of those three tents in impressed Raymond's enough for him to say it in his speech that you know there's been a significant step of I think it was probably yours to be honest with the with this with the swag and the Birkenwill swag yeah um yeah I mean I'll take it of course but yeah it was certainly we we were in the area that we were in yeah you know yeah of course he um yeah it's um and yeah I think that's the thing really but it you know for me it is that showing off but you've got nice kit you want to be able to uh you know apart from anything else it makes it easy if you've got a nice kitchen yeah that you you know you're not having to pack down because the rain's coming in because you've got a tarp over it you know you're you're prepared um and even if even if you've got like one of those briefcase stoves you know with the that takes the the the gas long gas cylinder cassette that slides in you know even if you've got one of those if you've got a decent kitchen station even if that's just a table with all your stuff laid out that it makes that work so so you don't have to have the snow peak kitchen you don't have to have you know the really the really expensive yeah but you know what I mean if if if you've got that that you know equipment that's not quite as expensive if you're setting it up in a kitchen set in a proper kitchen setup it just works better you know it's doing the job that it's intended to do whereas if you're struggling with it on the floor and you're trying to do all sorts of stuff it just makes it hard work.

So um you know I would I would say if you haven't got something like the the kitchen station that I've got that's got a built-in windbreak one of the best purchases you you can make um is go and get a windshield protector for your for whatever stove that you're using and you can buy generic ones in in places like Decathlon and and and a lot of you know actual camping stores and they it is so beneficial having something like that in your kitchen setup because it will save you an awful lot of time because the wind's not blowing your gas away it'll save you an awful lot of money because you're not burning twice as much gas and um it also instantly makes whatever table you're using look like a kitchen station.

Makes you look like a pro it does I mean uh I know uh um one of our friends had problems on the Sunday morning because the wind had just picked up and it just wasn't cooking sausages or bacon yeah um I had it uh when I was in fire and stars a couple of times before uh where I was trying to uh do I had my toasting machine on just a little burner and just it just wasn't getting through the wind was just blowing it off yeah blowing it off um it all go it all goes on at fire and stars it doesn't it doesn't go on at fire and stars uh the um so yeah you know it's it's just one of those things I uh I was just making a quick toasty you know yeah as you do as you do bean and cheese second breakfast second lunch there's no wonder I'm the size I am is that oh go away I'm bigger than you at the moment I'm bigger than you at the moment it's an I realised about you know um you're saying one of our mates at the the last camp was uh was struggling I um at no point did I say do you want to use my kitchen station with the windbreak which I should have just done should have just moved moved over to my kitchen station yeah I think I think you packed it by then had I oh well yeah oh well then that's why get lost get lost do mine first next time we're going camping it'll be like uh are you gonna do like that three hour breakfast again he's not listening is he's not listening he's definitely not listening oh man oh man uh the others are though they know they know they're in the know I mean uh Richie had the right idea just stick to your own yeah yeah yeah I mean thank god I had first breakfast that's all I'm saying because second breakfast took a while took hours hours to come oh man that was funny it was Richie's breakfast looked like like like shite now didn't it I wouldn't have eaten I wouldn't have eaten that filthy muck to be honest I mean you know when the first breakfast was wearing off I was like I could have one of them sausages do oh I thought he had some bowl of porridge filthy muck that looked like I thought it was on was that the other day it was the other day I think yeah okay all right yeah no I'm getting my days mixed up it's um yeah I think his first breakfast on the first the first day he stayed was um porridge porridge and it was just like he needed oats because he'd been walking and stuff he's like hardcore is that guy I know I know I know hardcore and his beautiful MSR tent yeah that is a that is a really nice tent he's got there it's um nice equipment nice equipment scene uh across all of us that weekend it was it was a good um a good weekend for looking at stuff in the camp yeah so um yeah a little recap make sure you've got a good kitchen station get yourself organised your food'll taste better you won't make yourself sick and your kit won't get ruined if you've got a tarp over it don't be cooking in your tent cuz that way lays danger yeah and don't be licking your fingers after you've chopped raw chicken that way however hungry you get oh god oh yeah don't be don't be like cutting raw chicken and then chopping up a salad oh no oh dear it's um it's simple stuff though you know really thinking about you know what am I gonna cook how am I gonna cook it what am I gonna cook it on um and setting up a proper dedicated station to do all of that just makes life a lot easier doesn't it well it does and and you know there might be some people out there going oh I can't be bothered with all that what are they talking about and stuff but honestly it just makes getting up getting the kettle on so much easier yeah you know how many times have we over the years where we've gone like oh who's got kettle on because like actually the 10 minutes of oh I don't have any water I didn't get myself set up I've got to walk across the site to go get some water and fill me kettle and you know it it's just a laboursome that it doesn't need to be yeah uh get yourself set up and you go right kettle's got water in for the morning I can just get up put my head out get that on boom yeah and you're you're ready to to make a brew because you absolutely need a brew first thing in the morning it's um yeah you really do makes you know it's about making camping easier much easier I um I'd be really interested to know um you know one of our listeners Hugh who goes camping in the Arctic be really interesting to see how uh his kitchen setup looks yeah I mean okay if you're going from point to point and you're on the Arctic and stuff we know you're not gonna have a kitchen setup but you know I I've seen uh Paul Messener um he loves uh point to point camping at the top of a thing takes a small tent and he cooks just in the awning of it and things and you know that that's it's a different game altogether isn't it you know we are still talking about car camping which is what we do the majority of the time but there are differences and I'm sure off uh last week's episode you didn't have a camp kitchen when you went to Scotland planes, trains and automobiles.

We'd taken a couple of stoves we were cooking on on the ground it's um and we we we made it as needs must yeah as easy as as we could but it's um fraught with danger I did um I did lose a pan of water that was nearly boiled because my um my stove went over at one point so it's you know it was a bit of a pain in the backside but um but that's it you know you'd planned specific meals then that you know can cope with that kind of stuff yeah yeah yeah but it's um you know if you're car camping get yourself a proper kitchen station it's um have a look at some camping furniture and um you know even do like like like you know you've gone all ultra modern I've gone super retro you know both systems work they really do you know I've I've got retro too I've got two lots Tim depending on you know what I'm in what mood I'm in you know it's a it's a little bit like um you know oh what shall I oh I've not tried not tried that it's like trying on different pair of pants or something you know is it is it like if you you know this camp I feel like a space cowboy or do I feel like a a um like a 70s chick you know which which one you go in with yeah who knows who knows who cares who cares yes I think we've lost uh lost listeners now um so as always thank you for listening um the uh we don't do sponsorship so you don't get adverts on our things uh we would really appreciate a like a comment a follow a subscribe uh because that makes us uh continue on nobody wants we don't want you to be listening to adverts and uh you don't want to be listening to them so um that's a small thing please uh if you can do that'd be great uh we would love it you can find us on most of the socials but mainly on Facebook and Instagram we are on YouTube as well for some longer videos if you want to see us uh messing stuff up stuff up in the field that's where you can do it yay yay no we um we do all right with our we do all right with our videos we look reasonably um you know not completely stupid but um this is casual camping you know we are casual we try and have a laugh and a joke and um and just have a good time don't we uh we do uh I think that is the main uh thing you might have come for the camping hopefully you're staying for the laughs let's do a minute mindfulness have we got any uh five star mediocre reviews oh god let's go to minute mindfulness while I find one welcome to the casual camping minute mindfulness let the sounds of nature take you back to the camping field oh yeah I have actually well good good minute mindfulness should we come back in from a minute mindfulness go on you bring us back in and I'll I'll do it I'll do it.
