This week Tim and Ade unpack their wild weekend running The Barter Barn at The Bushcraft Show — a stall that somehow became the busiest spot on site and raised a small fortune for charity in the process. Think constant crowds, premium gear flying in and out, and trades so bizarre they’ll live forever in podcast lore (yes, including the wedding dress).
From a kid swapping foraged mint for a water bladder, to Damascus knives, Dutch ovens, elf costumes, and a dedicated knife table that appeared out of necessity, the lads relive the beautiful madness of running a no‑cash trading post in 35‑degree heat.

SPEAKER_01Welcome, all of you lovely people, to this week's episode of Casual Camping Podcast. The sun is shining here in the UK. It's been a scorcher. My name's Tim.
SPEAKER_02And I'm an aide. An Aide's got a little surprise today, Tim. Look what I came home with.
SPEAKER_01Oh my god. You got Jesse's cakes. You got Jesse's buns. You got your hands on Jesse's buns. Easy now, Tiger. Oh, yeah, she brought us a little.
SPEAKER_02I also got the jam. And you know what is a good crossover? Putting a little bit of butter on these and some bit of jam. And it's heaven.
SPEAKER_01I'm guessing I'm never going to get to find that out.
SPEAKER_02Well, these this is my snack food for the podcast.
SPEAKER_01Perfect snack food. Perfect snack food. Jess, it was it was a pleasure meeting you. It was a pleasure eating some of your cakes, although I've clearly I've missed out on the rest of them. Um thank you very much for being part of our weekend. Cheers. I'm uh I'm on a beer.
SPEAKER_02Uh you are on a beer. I'm a little bit beered out, Tim. My God, that was a heavy weekend.
SPEAKER_01I see. I don't think it was that heavy. I thought the the last time we we we went there, I thought it was a really heavy weekend, but we were too busy working ahead. This was a working weekend. Literally. Really, really was.
SPEAKER_02So, for those of you that don't know, where have you been? Uh Tim and myself have been off at the uh Bushcraft show. We had excellent weather, uh, and like all winging palms, we'd probably say it was a little bit too hot, wouldn't we?
SPEAKER_01Tim, yeah, it was a little too excellent, to be honest.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, they must have been so happy with that weekend's weather. Um, absolutely uh brilliant. I've come home for first time that I've uh I've got a tan in three days, you know. It's brilliant. I uh I mean I did have the cooking oil on, didn't I?
SPEAKER_01You did have cooking oil. I was fat to 50 and I managed to not burn myself. You did burn your neck, but you were burn my neck, everything else.
SPEAKER_02Uh uh I'm looking golden, golden aid, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Ooh, that sounds a bit weird. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Does refer to me being quite old though, doesn't it?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, definitely more David Dickinson as you get older.
SPEAKER_02If you don't get that reference, do Antiques and David Dickinson, and then you'll see. And it's um the double of Ed. It's the double, hey, and he even got the glasses, anyway. Uh so yeah, so we were at the Bushcraft show, which is in Stamford Hall in Leicestershire. Uh, lovely, lovely estate, and you know what makes a really good weekend great people, and the Bushcraft crew customers, one and all, are absolutely excellent people, I think.
SPEAKER_01Um they are the friendliest bunch of people that you are ever gonna meet, and some of them we haven't seen for a couple of years, and they it was just great, you know, they're so welcoming, such such a laugh, you know. It's um, you know, uh big shout out to to Paz and um and Curtis for camping near us and and having such a giggle with us. It's um and we haven't seen them for two years, and and that was that was awesome, just awesome.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's um it yeah, it really was. And considering, you know, everybody is tooled up with knives as you're walking around, yeah. It felt like kind of like uh uh uh you know, uh America and their gun laws and stuff, and they go, well, you know, when you need a gun, you you have a gun. Yeah, uh kind of, you know, it it was like unilaterally, hey, everybody's friendly, because we we we all know we've got knives.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we're all carrying, we're all carrying, so it's a deterrent, no one's gonna do anything. Even the kids were carrying like horror knives on their belts. It's um the police were there just doing like some friendly stuff, and even they were walking around going, it's really weird, there's lots of knives here, but everybody's talking about them as tools, not as knives. Um, and it was like a real sort of light bulb moment for them because clearly they're coming from a world where knives are bad and stabby stabby stabby, whereas in the bushcraft community, a knife is just another tool, and and if you treat it that way, then actually it's it's not a negative implement, it's a it's a it's a positive implement. We talked about that before, haven't we?
SPEAKER_02On our uh it doesn't have to be just the bushcraft community. I think if you go camping an awful lot, having a belt knife, having a uh uh whether it's a sheath knife or a foldable pocket knife or whatever, there's a heck of a lot of uses when you're out camping, yeah. Yeah, you know, so so whether you're into bushcraft and uh we're very aware that uh um you know this isn't about the bushcraft show per se, but it is about what's it about, Tim?
SPEAKER_01So the title kind of gives it away uh if you've clicked on the link. So we did we're going on about it for weeks and weeks and weeks and weeks and weeks and weeks and weeks. We did the Bartaban. It was the Barterbahn. What's that, Tim?
SPEAKER_02What's that?
SPEAKER_01It's the Barterbahn. God, we have to explain that a lot of times, didn't we, over the weekend?
SPEAKER_02Oh, we really did. You know what it is? One of the most successful stalls uh at the show, I reckon.
SPEAKER_01No, no, no, no, no, no. It was the most successful stall, and and that's not from us, that's from people coming and telling us, that's from other vendors coming over and telling us. We um we expected to get there. You know, we got there on the Friday. This whole thing went from Friday morning to to Monday, sort of late afternoon, and we got there on the Friday, we set up our camp. There'll be images and videos of that on our socials, and then we we had to go and set up the stall before they kind of closed off the arena to vehicles. So we had to get our vehicle your van actually in there. So we set that up, and we really thought that we'd probably do two or three hours a day and spend the rest of the time sort of eating food, watching, you know, um some of the the speakers, looking around the stalls, having a few drinks, having a bit of a laugh. The second we opened that stall on the Friday, our feet did not touch the ground, and we didn't really stop until Monday lunchtime.
SPEAKER_02It uh we didn't do long days like some of the other traders. Uh you know, we opened at 10, we finished at three. We were gonna have a break, but that didn't transpire because we were just there was no way that we were closing down in the middle of the day. And Saturday none.
SPEAKER_01Saturday we didn't we didn't finish till after four because we couldn't get people out of the out of the barn.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. And I think it's a testament to one, what we brought, but what we brought changed pretty quickly. So so we were bartering for what somebody else had, and I think what I was saying to people, oh, I've got nothing to barter. I went, well, that's what other people have said, but when you find something uh that you like in there, then you kind of think, Well, what can I barter this for? Um so it was really challenging people to then go, right, okay.
SPEAKER_01Um it was it was a real game, wasn't it? It's a real game for people, and they're really they're massively engaged. I think the first few people that came in realized that actually it wasn't full of old tat, it wasn't a charity shop stall. Hey, there was some old tat in there, there was that bad. Okay, yeah, there was there was some old tat, some of which I I brought, but but it I was meaning mine, I wasn't thinking of yours. But but actually, in among some of the few items that were tat, the vast majority of stuff was actually quality brands, well-looked after gear, good camping stuff. So suddenly the first few people realized that and they were like, Oh, well, I could swappy this, and that's actually really good. You know, the first the first trade that we did was that lovely night um for knife and fork set, the folding knife and fork set that uh went to the guy who was an absolute legend who had the stall opposite, who kept coming, uh kept coming in and kept coming in and kept coming in. It's um and and suddenly because I don't know, there was almost like a bit of word of mouth had gone around that we did actually have good stuff on the stall, that people people really turned up and really engaged. And then it was almost on an hourly basis, nearly everything had changed because people were bartering, but we weren't taking crap, we were taking good stuff in, so it constantly changed to more good stuff and then more good stuff. So then the same people kept coming back because they knew there'd be a load of other stuff there that they could have a look at. It was mad, it it it's um it went way beyond our expectations and and and just performed amazingly, you know, in amongst stalls that were, let's be honest, selling things that were quite expensive, just really well made, yeah, craftman stuff, craft person stuff.
SPEAKER_02Uh yeah, so that was Dean Humphreys, who was opposite us. Yes, shout out to Deanaz. Deanaz. Uh and as he said, you know, I'm coming over every hour or so because it's changing so rapidly. You know, we we got uh was it a special boat services bladder? Somebody traded it.
SPEAKER_01That was that was early, early on.
SPEAKER_02Early on, that went, yeah. Somebody knew what it was. Yep, I'll have that. We had Lodge um uh cast iron stuff, yeah. We had some MSR stoves at some point. Uh yeah, we just didn't we have a dragon stove as well.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. And we had absolutely we had to have a knife table in the end um near the back because actually uh knives kept exchanging and exchanging. So we had a dedicated sharp pointy station at the at the back. And um it was it was just brilliant. We had tents coming in, and we're thinking, well, no one's gonna take those big tents. They all went. It's um you know, we it it was it was incredible, incredible. We did um we did um record a little bit of when we'd got to the show. Shall we just jump to that and um and uh do we do the drunken bit afterwards or should we miss out the drunken bit?
SPEAKER_02Tim, we don't edit. Good morning. This is Aide. We are finally, after looking forward to it for so many weeks, at the Bushcraft Show. We are at Stanford Hall. It is a wonderful weekend weather-wise. Uh, and so far some of us have got a little bit uh sunburnt, I would say. Uh we're camping in a field. There are some excellent tents around, so uh yeah, going around having a look at what people's setups are. Uh there is a lake to the side of us and some noisy Canadian geese. But I wouldn't change a thing of it, Tim.
SPEAKER_01No, no, there's uh there's a bit of a tractor in the background as well, but we are we are in country. We are in country. We're um we're we're in a a VIP camping field, which uh uh very privileged for massive, big, very mature trees all around us. A blue sky, the sun is already up. I um I don't know what time it is, Ed. It is 20 to 8 in the morning. That uh that is that is lovely, and not a cloud anywhere at all. It's um it's just a beautiful morning, isn't it, in the field?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's gonna be a good one. It's gonna be hot. Uh first real hotness of this year, I think. And so yeah, we've got to make sure that we've got our sunscreen on. Are you ready for bartering today, Tim?
SPEAKER_01I am so ready for bartering today. We we arrived yesterday and uh and the plan really from us, wasn't it, it was just to to get here, get our camp set up, and then go and set up the barter barn with a view to us starting today, sort of leaving it then and and overnight and then starting this morning. But we just got inundated, didn't we, by people?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it really hit a nerve, I think, for a lot of people in a good way. Uh so yeah, they started trading straight. Once they understood it, you know, they saw that there was some really nice stuff, uh, and then they were like, Oh right, I'll go see what I uh have got. And yeah, it was great. I mean we were offered, I think, three husbands, one wife, and a couple of kids. Which really did make me uh understand that uh yeah, we while we did say there was no rules, we uh had to draw the line at that, I think.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we did we uh we weren't um we're not into trafficking people. It's um this is casual camping podcast. It's um yeah, it's uh we're not into modern slavery. It's um It was it was really lovely actually seeing um seeing some of the the listeners, so uh seeing people who had clearly listened to the podcast and um and came by to say hello, that was really nice, wasn't it?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it really was. Um so yeah, it was seen a few people and we met up with uh some good friends and it's gonna be a cracking weekend. If uh anybody doesn't have uh tickets or didn't want to come, you're missing missing out. I hope you've gone and done something rather excellent because this over takes some beating to be honest. Great weather, loads of great people, the uh the people in the stalls that have been making stuff, there's axes, there's knives, there's just so much uh uh crafting things I I can't wait to uh have a look myself, really.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's that's the only drawback, isn't it, to running a stall. We was we were saying that this morning making coffee, that it's it's there's so much here. Yeah, actually when you're running a stall, y your your focus is on your stall and and and doing that. So um so yeah, we need to um we need to make sure that we we close the stall for a couple of hours in the middle of the day so that we can get round and see everything.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I think as well because it was so much fun at the s uh the stand, uh um just getting to know people, having a laugh with people, whether they bartered anything or not, just explaining to people, that was the best bit. And I know we there's uh enough of us that we could go off and have a little wander around, but you don't kind of want to miss it, do you?
SPEAKER_01No, really, really, really true. It's um you know, you all went back to the camp at one point yesterday, and I was kind of there on my own, and I was inundated with with people, and it was great, and there was some great conversations and great fun and some trades made while while you guys were away, and it was like you're missing you're missing all this fun.
SPEAKER_02I think I think that's the thing, and I I really felt that I did. Um I was doing a beer run team, so that was important. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, I wasn't gonna stop you. Uh but there's still uh loads of things, so I'm I'm excited to see how it goes today because everybody was saying to us last night Friday is quiet generally, Saturday's busy. So it'll be really interesting to see how busy we get today. Because ours is a small stall, so maybe we we bring some of that out onto so that people can see.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, I agree. We'll um let's see what today brings. Gotta do a big shout out to Jess for um come to say hello and bringing us cakes, um, which is brilliant. So Jess is just one of our listeners who's also doing some catering here, it turns out, for the volunteers, which is which is incredible. But she brought us some cakes yesterday, didn't she?
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Listen up, listeners, if you come and meet us. Jess has now set the bar quite high.
SPEAKER_01What's my watch my foot? Alright, how many times have you got to stab that in the ground? Of you. Oh man, it's late at night. It's evening. What is it? Actually, it's quar a quarter to witch an hour. Uh what are the highlights for today, Tim? We have uh a bartered and bartered and bartered like we've never bartered before.
SPEAKER_02It's like a barnstorm, as well as we've had a few trades that might have given us a few beers. So thank you for those traders. Uh and we've also seen the Chief Scout.
SPEAKER_01That that's a that is a hell of a day, really, isn't it, actually? When you put it in those terms, we um we have bartered and there are people moving through the darkness. It's um we bartered and bartered and bartered on the uh on the barter barn, and we have we've had unbelievable numbers of people come through there, haven't we?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, we have. I think I think I would say we're the busiest stall.
SPEAKER_01Well, we would say it, but what's better is actually several people have said it, and then other stall vendors have also said it. We are officially the busiest stall at the bushcrasher.
SPEAKER_02What a success. Who knew that people wanted to come and swap stuff? And just see what we've got. Have a laugh, have a great time. We've chuckled. Uh I think laughed. There's some times that we have maybe not got the best deal, and other times where we've got the better deal, but the main thing is that we've enjoyed striking that deal. I think that's the crazy thing.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. And people have literally had a laugh and a giggle, and as long as everybody goes away feeling like they've they've done the right thing, then that's that's all that really matters. And and you know, we've taken cash out of the equation, we've had a load of gear that that has got quality to it, but we don't need everyone else, has got the same stuff, so just come together and swap it all and and play around. And it's been amazing, and literally, every hour there's been new stuff on the bar to barn, and people have come back again and again and again all day long, haven't they?
SPEAKER_02All day long. We we've got sick of some some people have got sick of us, Tim. I've got sick of you.
SPEAKER_01That's most weeks, eh? To be honest. To be honest. There's there have been some people who have come back a lot, haven't they? They've come back a lot, but they um it's it's just been it's just been really I I think it's been really cool. I think it's been a really cool day.
SPEAKER_02It has been such a fun day, and you know what, people make days like this. We're not gonna forget it. I hope uh if you've come and swapped and you're listening now because you didn't know that we existed. One, press that subscribe because we need it. Damn right. We don't we don't care about those other stalls. Who cares about them? Who cares? But you know, we were we were officially the busiest stall to to to this point. We got a whole other day at this time, but you know, so It's just gonna be a laugh and a giggle, and we'll see what trades we can do and we'll see what happens. We're sitting in the field at the moment, it's really dark. It's um like I say, it's getting close to Witching Hour and uh we're we're putting more wood on the fire. We've got the Charles of Chasington Towers with us. We've got the Richard the Fixer who's sitting here. You know, the four of us have done the bartabarn. It's it's not an an AD and Tim show 'cause uh we just couldn't have done that. It's uh it's a foolesome. We uh we've greased each other up and we've got oiled down and we've had a good time. Haven't we guys?
SPEAKER_02Absolutely. I've been satisfied, that's all I'm saying.
SPEAKER_01How many times? It's um it's day three. You've been drinking too many beers, Tim. Not yet. It's uh it's what, it's it's ten to twelve on uh on day three, and we're we're at the barn.
SPEAKER_02We are at the barn and another day of uh bargains, bargains, bargains, deals, deals, deals, and you know what? A load of good conversations with some cracking people. I've really enjoyed it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's been absolutely absolutely brilliant, hasn't it? We've uh we've met so many people and I've had a real good laugh. It's um well, what was it the chap was saying this morning? He's kind of in the stall opposite, and he's just sitting there watching so many people come out of our stall with big smiles on their faces.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, massive smiles, and that's obviously what we don't see because we're in the stall as and they're walking away. We've done the deal, uh we're not being too hard on uh anything. We've been traded some really nice stuff. We've let a lot of things go. Sometimes we've got the better of the deal, I think. Other times some people have got the better of the deal. But what is really important is it's a friendly, nice interaction, and it's something different. And I think everybody's gone away going, I hope this is here next year, because I'll bring loads more stuff.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. I don't know whether we could do it next year, but we if we can find a way of doing it, I think we will, because it has been an absolute scream, hasn't it? It's um just to sort of see everyone and and just just have a laugh and see the same faces come back again and again and again. This chap in front of us has been here about four times just this morning.
SPEAKER_02Well, yeah, somebody's rushed off to get something to trade me for uh a fire that I've got. Uh so that's an interesting thing, and and that's the bonus of it, really, isn't it? You never know what you're gonna see, and people are coming back two or three times, four times, just to see what else it is. And I've been saying to people, you know, come and have a look, because you don't know what you'll find. Yeah, and then once you find something that you want, it's what are you willing to let go of? Yeah, you know, what can you trade? And uh, you know, there's very few people, mostly it's it's been for stuff. There's a few things that we we've traded as skill. So I'm doing uh bow drilling, which I've never done before, and I've I wanted to do it the last time we were here. Uh yeah, so that that's really interesting uh to to think of uh those kind of things.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, no, it's um that'd be really great for you to go and do that. I um I I tried it the other week on my um Timu bought set and uh failed miserably, and uh it'd be nice to know actually how to do it properly. You'll be able to teach me. Well, I wouldn't go that far, but uh yeah, I'm looking forward to it. So yeah. Right, let's get uh let's get bartering. Well, maybe we should have edited that.
SPEAKER_02Oh dear, right. I I think um I think initially what people's nervousness, not just about oh well you don't take cash, because I just want to give you cash. It was the fact that we weren't trying to uh make the best deals in the world. Sometimes I think we got lucky, and somebody was like, you know, oh no, I'll I'll I'll give you more for that.
SPEAKER_01Um the guy with the uh damasque uh oh god how knife how bloody lovely was him him and his wife, and um he's he'd not long been into bushcraft and um and the outdoors, and um and he uh there was a Damascus steel knife on uh on the the the knife table and he wanted a fixed blade knife and he absolutely loved it and he had nothing to trade at all and he was gutted and I and I just said well we'll trade some food, you know, we'll trade food and beers. So he went and got us some food and um and then that wasn't enough, you know. It was enough for us. It was enough for us, yeah. We were fine because we were you know the priority for us was that everybody needed a good deal, you know, on both sides. We all needed to be happy, you know. It was it was a bit of fun, is what we were doing, um, but it wasn't enough for him, so he got us a drink. Um, and then I think the following day he still got something else, and he came back the next day with the city.
SPEAKER_02He came back, yeah. Oh, I've got this for you, and I think it was a pair of binoculars.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, it was, it was. Yeah, and it was just like you didn't you didn't need to do that, but actually that made him feel like he got the right deal. So that so that was that was fine. It's um, but they were such a lovely couple, absolutely lovely couple, and um, and they're you know that was one of the nicest trades for me was uh was him because he was he was so made up, so made up with um with getting the knife that he really liked. And um, and you know that something like that is gonna go on and have another life. It's gonna go on and you know, it's not gonna sit in someone's shelf who's not using it anymore, it's gonna go off with someone who's really excited to have made this trade and is gonna go off and use that and use that, and um and that's what it was all about, and it was it was brilliant, absolutely brilliant.
SPEAKER_02And and I I think that's the thing. If we'd have done that anywhere else other than the Bushcraft show, I think the reception might have been a little bit cooler, yeah. But because there were families, there were really experienced guys, there were um, and there were there's very few trades we said no to. Uh, I think we said no to somebody bringing us an old pair of boots.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. But actually he went and sold those to one of the other traders for 70 quid. Oh, did he now? Yeah, yeah. I just didn't. They looked worn, they looked a bit knackered, and I didn't recognise the uh the brand on them. And he said what brand they were, and uh as though I should know, and I didn't know. And he and he was absolutely fine with with not trading them, but um he came back a bit later and went, I got 70 quid for those boots off uh somebody around the corner. I was like, good on you, good, you know, yeah, good, good trade. Good, good trade, well done. Well done, well done. It's um well we took we took some trousers at one point, and I thought, oh, we shouldn't have taken those trousers. Yeah, it's uh that's a that's a bad move. Somebody traded for the trousers the uh the following day.
SPEAKER_02Well, yeah, we did also, I traded uh a young lad who had made his own Swedish hood, felt hood. That was cool, was that? It was so cool, but it was quite niche. Certainly, it made you look like an ewok or something like that.
SPEAKER_01Um great picture of you in it looking like you're about to go.
SPEAKER_02Which will go up on socials, yeah. Um uh and I'd not seen them before, but we traded that, uh didn't we?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that went that went on on the Sunday afternoon quite late on that that got traded, which um which was awesome. The best trade for me um out of the whole thing was a little lad who came in and he'd seen something on the stall earlier, but had nothing to trade, and his family didn't have anything to trade, and he'd gone off and foraged a big bushel of um of wild mint and came back and went, Can I trade this for that? And I went, Yes, you can, young man. That is amazing. And um and his face lit up and he was just really happy. I think it was a water bladder that he wanted, like an odd an odd thing for a young lad to a young lad to want. He was probably about seven or eight or something like that, but he'd um his mum said he's he's been trying to find something to to swap for you, and he'd he'd gone off and found some some wild mint and um and got a big handful of it all together and brought it to trade. And it was like that's the essence of that stall.
SPEAKER_02I I think you're right. Uh it you know, I think if profits are at the heart of what you're doing, and that wasn't our intention. No, it was for us, it was content, it was uh promoting ourselves a little bit more, it was being part of something like the Bushcraft show and and knowing that we're contributing, uh and you know, things like that. The young lad that you know is desperate to do something, knows the environment that he's at, and you know, we'd have traded him half the stall for that, just because the essence of him going and doing that. I mean, there was lots of scouts there, there was Cub Scouts, people who are you know on the edge of that sort of wood, or or even quite part of it, and the chief scout was there. We had uh uh an evening uh uh chat with Dwayne.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, what a what a thoroughly nice man he is.
SPEAKER_02It's um what a thoroughly nice chap. I've listened to his desert island this now. He's got pretty strange taste in music, though. Well, if you if you're listening, Duane, you come and tell us uh anything different. We're quite happy uh if you take up our offer of coming on the bushcraft on the uh casual con.
SPEAKER_01If he's listening to those songs, he's on a desert island on his own, so it doesn't matter. We don't have to listen to hey.
SPEAKER_02I think one of them was uh uh the locomotion bike.
SPEAKER_01That's not that weird. I like that one. I mean it wouldn't be on my desert island.
SPEAKER_02Wait on, let's not uh properly uh I am sagging him off actually.
SPEAKER_01Don't you know it was I'm such an ass gun. He was a really authentic guy. It's uh really really came across as genuinely interested in our story about how we got into camping and how we started a podcast. And you know, listeners will the long-time listeners know we we started doing this because we weren't talking together as often as we should have been, and he really really engaged with that story and really really liked that story. And uh he did say he uh he wouldn't mind coming on the show, so we're gonna try and track him down somewhere. And um, and at some point it'd be really nice to get um the chief scout for the UK onto um onto the show because he was he was a cool guy, he was a cool guy.
SPEAKER_02He uh man, he yeah, he just was, and he he made you he's got that um good attribute that a lot of people in public life do have, where they s meet a lot of people and make everybody feel listened and heard, and and he certainly did that uh for us. And I saw him the following day uh going around the event, he was talking at the event, and we were too busy, so we said no, sorry, we didn't uh come and hear that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we we I mean, like I say, we we had every intention of going to lots of the talks, but we couldn't get we couldn't get away from the barn. It was um once it was open, it was just manic, until we were literally forcing people out and kind of going, we are actually closed now, we can't we can't do any more. Please stop trying to trade.
SPEAKER_02Hey, one of the first trades we had on the uh Saturday morning was for uh I think a beer or two uh for something. And I I was like, Well, this is a little bit too early until I drunk it, and I was like, Yeah, okay, sound sounds like we we might just go on. I've just got to monitor that I've got some other liquid going into it as well.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I do remember that boy, I did say to him, Can you can you bring them about 12 o'clock? Because it's a bit too early for beer. They turned up in 20 minutes, so it was Yeah, it was like no no, I'm off.
SPEAKER_02And I was like, Oh, okay, then well, there you go.
SPEAKER_01I'm not gonna say no. Yeah, I did bring beers home from the weekend, but it's only because there were quite a few trades that were beer and food.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, we had a great breakfast. Uh and we will we have been sharing some of these things. I think what uh you will have seen from our uh Facebook pages and our Instagram is that the forfeit of either the elf costume or the wedding dress uh was taken up by some great sports. Yeah, uh, Matt being the first, uh, and he was like, Yeah, okay, I need that thing. I've got nothing to trade. Yes, I'm gonna do it. I think pressure from his kids.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, he did he did have a few things to trade, but it didn't quite add up to the Petramax sort of Kelly Kettle type thing that he really wanted, and uh, and we were like, You got anything else to trade to add in? And he went, No. And we went, Well, there's always the wedding dress, and he was like, Oh god, no, no, no. And they was like, Yeah, I'll do the wedding dress. Was that a no, no, no? Oh, go on then. Suited him actually.
SPEAKER_02What uh what a brilliant example for his kids there, actually. You know what? If you don't take yourself too seriously, it doesn't matter. And you know, he got some wolf whistles going round, uh, lots of people looking, wondering what the heck that was. So it was great self-promotion for us, and I think an excellent trade. Uh so well done to Matt. Big shout out. Yeah, I didn't get to go see his tent, and I'm gutted about it.
SPEAKER_01I know, I know. I've watched a reel this morning of them putting it up, and I'm like, we didn't, we we didn't get to go and see the tent. We didn't get to go see the tent.
SPEAKER_02We didn't, we didn't get to do anything, eh? We didn't get to do anything. Yeah, the the only thing that we did do that I didn't want to do was we did the auction on the main stage, Tim.
SPEAKER_01We got on the main stage every day. We we we were officially um pushed into being famous, and we didn't cock it up too much, really, did we? We didn't actually. You know what? We raised we raised over four grand for them, essentially on um water bottles and trousers. We just had a laugh, and the crowd for that grew while we were doing it because actually we were funny, we were engaging, and although I know I was very nervous, I know you were very nervous beforehand. So we didn't really know what what we were what we were doing. It was a little bit lastminute.com, but you know what?
SPEAKER_02We pulled some of the some of the best things you know turn out to be we just got on with it in the end. Um, I was absolutely bricking it, I really was. Um, and then you just go and do it, and a couple of people were very nice the following day, going, yeah, no, it was good fun, uh, considering that you had six of one thing and a dozen of the others, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Like, yeah, you know, it was um it was uh I I'm someone who likes I like to plan, I like to have, you know, I can I do presentations at work to room full of people, but it's stuff that I know, and and I get really stressed when it's kind of thrown at me without any planning, and uh, and I think that was quite apparent on the day that I was pretty stressed just beforehand. But the odd thing is you and I, you put a microphone in our hand, and suddenly there's a switch that's flicked, and we're okay, and we're quite happy to stand in front of people and be a bit silly and a bit daft, and um well we did a good job. We did a good job, mate.
SPEAKER_02Uh I I would agree with that, but I would also say that actually, you know, I I would like to say that, you know, maybe we're the more common wise of the uh sort of uh but I think we're probably a little well we're we're not even ant and deck, we're probably um we're probably ant and deck's aunt. Little and large, little and large.

SPEAKER_01Well, we work off each other, and that's why this podcast works, doesn't it? It's um you know, I can't do this podcast without you, it'd be really boring.

SPEAKER_01We couldn't have done that though without um Richard's help and with Alex's help, because uh Alex was the scribe, and uh which allows us there, you know, she did all the writing work and all the uh making sure the numbers and who'd bought what was written. Who bought what, who'd paid, who'd not paid, who needed to pay. Yeah, yeah. That allowed us to be the freedom to be a bit silly and not have to hold all that stuff in our heads. It's um I still haven't had my hearing check though, because I was clearly looking the wrong way sometimes when people were shouting.
SPEAKER_02So you know I th I yeah, my uh it it's really strange when lots of people throw their hands up and go, and then you've got to choose who you heard first.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. And a couple of people, you know, felt like they missed out, but the bids went beyond their bid anyway, so it's like, you know, what are you on about? You only bid 20 quid and it went for 200. You know, calm yourself down.
SPEAKER_02Uh but it you know, I think ultimately what an experience I've had. Yeah, um, and I I wish I could have seen more of the Bushcraft show. It's uh really quite evident that running something that is busy and successful, uh you see a different part of it, and because you know there's a lot of craftsmen there, there was uh some axe makers, knife makers, lots of craft things. I did get to uh go off for an hour and do some uh fire making.
SPEAKER_01Tell tell everyone Ed about your uh your fire making.
SPEAKER_02Uh tell you, I uh I'm walking a little bit taller because I feel like a real man. So uh we traded. Well, first of all, we we traded uh what we thought was a tent for a guy who said, Well, I I actually do a fire making course. Um it's 20 quid, you come for an hour and show you uh, you know, give you some tips and tricks, and you you should hopefully be able to make fire. And I was like, Right, okay, that sounds like a good deal. I've been wanting to do that. I've been here like all weekend and I've not done it. I wanted to, and so we we kind of did that. Um, and then he he brought it back. We were too busy to go on the first day, so I missed out. And uh I said, Oh, can I just change it until tomorrow? And he said, Yeah, yeah, fine. He said, I I've had that tent up and it's an inner tent, not a tent. Oh bugger, I didn't I didn't realise that. Can I trade it back? Um, and I was like, Yeah, what do you need? And he went, I'm I'm liking the look of that chair, and I went, Yeah, done. At this point, I was nervous that the big stuff we'd be bringing back with us.
SPEAKER_03So yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Um, and so yeah, and it yeah, one of his uh uh people on his store was saying, Oh, he loves that chair, and I went, Well, it looks a comfy chair, to be honest. Uh it was a big bear hug of a chair, kind of. Um, so yeah, so I went off, and there was three types of fire making skills. So bow drill, uh, hand drill, and then I don't know what it's called, Tim, but it's a boingy-boingy spinny thing. The spinny roundy disc thing that bounds up. Yeah, yeah. I know what you mean, but I don't know what it's called. Uh, we'll put a picture up, I'm sure, but yeah, boingy boingy fire making. Um, that's I think the technical term.
SPEAKER_01I got a video of you doing of you doing the bow drilling. Yeah, I got a video of you doing that, but I didn't get the boingy boingy thing, but I'm sure we can find pictures of it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Um, and I did he said that he'd not had somebody that's been able to do all three, and I did it, nailed it. Um I think he did thought that I'd had some training beforehand, and I was like, no, honestly. I've tried bow drill and found it too difficult. And so I've only had two or three like little goes at it, and then go, I don't, you know, I've obviously. Not got the technique. So he showed me some really good techniques of how to stand. Don't be crushed up so that you can breathe and you know, because it takes a bit of effort. I didn't expect to get it done with the uh hand um drill, uh, and I did. I didn't get it, he got it really smoking. I didn't get it smoking like that, but I got a good ember, uh, and then that that just did it. And then the last one, I tried, couldn't get it, swapped over with somebody else. They tried, they couldn't get it, swapped back to me, I got it.
SPEAKER_01So proud of you for that, Aid, because it that's an epic thing to do, you know.
SPEAKER_02What a trade, you know, and that that's the opposite end of. So Dean was telling us, he said, what you guys don't see is everybody that's traded from your store uh uh has then come away and he said they've got massive smiles on their hat uh on their faces and going like, look, you know, that they've really swapped that. And he said, So it's just a joy seeing smiling faces, and I think that's what I experienced in going and doing that. And I was like, well, that's a damn good trade.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's a brilliant trade, and um, and that was a lovely thing that that that Dean said really, it kind of really lit it up for us, wasn't it? Because it did. He he spent a lot of time opposite looking at people coming out of the stall and seeing the joy that um that they were getting from from just bartering and there being no money involved. It's um it was that's it's such a such a lovely a lovely thing. Such a lovely thing. Another great trade we did, which is gonna be it's gonna become a future episode. So um Ashley Kenlock, Ashley of um Canoe Trail, um with Rich Harpham. Uh Ashley came in to have a little look and wanted some cast iron, she wanted um the Petramax cast iron um Dutch oven, uh, which was a key item. Somebody had traded that into us, and that was like that's a premium item. Um, and she uh she really wanted that uh for her camp cook, her camp kitchen, and uh and then it was like but she didn't really have something that was worth that to trade, so then she traded in a canoeing weekend with her and her husband, which was like, Well, that's worth way more than a Petramax Dutch oven, so she made a massive pile of stuff together that we all kind of agreed was about the right thing, and um, and we're going canoeing with uh with Rich Harpham and uh and uh and Ashley, which is gonna be great, absolutely, yeah.
SPEAKER_02So once again, the recipients of this, and before people go, uh, you know what? We turned up with our stuff, we traded our stuff to you know, there wasn't we thought about going to brands and asking them if they'd got stuff, and we just thought that we'd maybe get a lot of water bottles and some buffs uh and scarves and branded up stuff, so it was our stuff that we didn't want to sell, that we just thought, you know, it's it sat in our sheds, and if this is uh uh an inspiration to anybody, you know, you could be doing this with your friends, you could be absolutely when you're meeting up, when you go, right, I've got a pile of stuff, you know. Does anybody want some of it? Um, to clear through, you know, a lot of this stuff is so well made, yeah. It's just because you're not using it anymore doesn't mean to say, and maybe it doesn't have an eBay value or a selling-on value or whatever, but it has a good trade kind of thing. Uh so the lady whose son uh was of uh uh quite an impressionable age, but he wasn't going to wear you you offered him the wedding dress already, yeah. And and she was like, No, he's you know, and so she had agreed that she would wear the elf's unit, uh elf's uh uniform and walk around down to the main stage and back again, and he was mortified, yeah, even though his mum was doing such a wonderful thing for uh him. Uh when she came back, she was like, he doesn't realise that he is doing the washing up for the next year.
SPEAKER_01Oh, that was funny. No, we um, you know, just going back to your point there of, you know, yes, we've accepted a camping trip for that, but we we started this barn with stuff that was all ours that all had an inherent value to it. You know, we joked that some of it was tat. Actually, none of it was tat. It was and that and that's that's what why people kept coming back because actually it was quality stuff, so all of our stuff that we've paid for over the years is now gone. So I don't feel bad in the slightest. Um taking you know Rich and Ashley up on a canoe trip. That actually we met them at the campaign, caravan, and motorhome show, and they offered us a canoe trip then anyway. So actually, you know, it's uh it feels like we've done the right deal there completely by actually not just accepting it for nothing. And we're with it, we've we've exchanged something when we then saw them again at uh at the Bushcraft show. So it it feels like it feels like the right deal. Feels like it feels like the right deal.
SPEAKER_02It's a good deal. There was a lot of handshaking and there was a lot of laughs and a lot of jokey fun with people.
SPEAKER_01We had a real giggle, we just had a real a real giggle. I love your idea of actually people replicating this with your groups of mates. So if you're if you're going camping with like three or four of you or more, all bring a few items, all bring half a dozen items that are spare stuff, put a blanket down and just just barter, just exchange some stuff. Because you know, if you we all tend to look after our stuff, we all tend to buy quality stuff, and just because we're not using it anymore doesn't mean it hasn't got a life that and a and a use that can go on, and um, and your mate will will will love it, and they might well have stuff that you're gonna go. Actually, I've always really liked that torch, you know. I've always really liked that kitchen set that you've got.
SPEAKER_02You know, I'll swap you the there's all uh and I wish I wasn't the consumer that I am. I wish I consumed less.
SPEAKER_01Um Eddie, we're all really glad that you're consuming. If it if Eddie's buying, we're all buying. The camping the camping retail community can't exist without you.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I mean, you know, where is it the the how Jones goes up and down as to whether or not I um but but that is the the essence of it, isn't it? That um you know you can barter things for well you could do breakfast in the morning or you know, but essentially it is moving that kit on. Uh means that somebody's not buying something new, that it's you know it's properly using its lifespan, essentially. And we were there for for content. We were there for content, we wanted to have a stall that the brushcraft show people would say to us that was great. Uh that people had fun, that people talked about it, which I think they did in spades, yeah.
SPEAKER_01And and and also again, you know, going to the back to the point about the exchanging for the canoe trip, you know, we were given tickets to the buscraft show, we'll be open and honest about that. It's um and we didn't we didn't want to just accept tickets because you know we're not sponsored, we're not we're you feel obliged then, don't you, to talk positively about stuff, which we don't like stuff off anyway, but but it's more authentic if there's a reason that we got those tickets. So that the we said we'd only go this year if we were actually doing something, and it feels like again, that's the right deal. We'll have to do that.
SPEAKER_02We we came up with the offer, and we'll and we'll do a bar to buy non not for profit, yeah. Um, and so finally on the the last day, because what we didn't want to do was come away with a lot of stuff, yeah, yeah. Your poor van. Yeah, um, I mean, we all turned up actually. Our vehicles were groaning with you know, I we all wanted to take our our kit, our your new tent, my tent, my setup, my stove. Wrong weekend to bring a stove. Um looked pretty. It looked pretty, it looked pretty, and that that's the thing, that's what Matt was saying. His um uh he'd brought the stove, but he was like, Oh no, it's too hot. It's like, yeah, you have a stove, and you might not use it, but it looks great with a stove pipe sticking out of it, so you know, and that's inspired us in the past, things like that. So that's you know how the journey that we're on. So, so yeah, finally on the last day, uh, and we did announce this after the auction finished, just to say who we were and what we were doing, and uh we would finally take cash on the last day, but only uh to uh give uh us money so that it would go to uh the bushcraft charities, so uh the Maasai and Woodlands Wiz, their work that they do. Uh so yeah, so we made over £500 on that final day with everything that uh that had been traded. We still had great stuff. People were very generous uh and giving us more money. Uh really they really were things were but they were still happy with that as well, and so it was really lovely to go around and meet Jason and Gamels from Woodland Ways. Uh, they've been giving talks uh uh about what they've been doing, and we we've seen them before.
SPEAKER_01Can I can I just apologise to to Jason? Because I did meet him on the Saturday night when I was a little bit drunk, and I did call it wilderness wares, and uh and about five minutes afterwards he went on stage to thank his team for the uh it was a big anniversary year for them and uh and I just gosh, well I'm a complete idiot, but um he was very gracious in accepting the uh the um the donations from us when we went.
SPEAKER_02I think he he was just a little bit blown away. Um, but he I don't think he could really work out that we just had a lot of laughs all weekend, and then the end result of those laughs was not only that we got what we wanted, which is a canoe trip, I've got a pair of binoculars, um bits and pieces, uh, but we had 500 quid to give to his charity. Uh and yeah, I think he he was just like, Oh, uh, because we'd sent a couple of people around that didn't have cash and just go, can you go make a donation around there? And uh so Yeah, they had a they had a card machine, didn't they? They had a card machine, so I uh somebody came back and said, Oh yeah, they they were a little bit kind of uh this is weird, but yeah, okay, we'll do it. So I thought I'd better go and uh just explain ourselves. And he was like, Oh, okay, then yeah. Uh so so yeah, you know, yeah, brilliant.
SPEAKER_01It's um it was absolutely brilliant. Yeah, I mean I think to the bushcraft community, we are, as to most campers, a couple of idiots, but actually to be able to put all that together to make it the absolute smashing success that it was, which doesn't happen by accident, my brother. We know we we organized ourselves properly, we made it a huge success, and then at the end of it all, after having a scream for so many days, we ended up with over 500 pounds to go and give someone who's actually massively respected and and very serious gentleman. I I I think you know, huge success for for the Barterbahn, massive success. And I I I've got to say now we we didn't do it alone, it wasn't just you and I.
SPEAKER_02No, we just wasn't. We couldn't have done that.
SPEAKER_01The excellent Richard Marples and Chaz of Chasington Towers, you know, literally put in 100% as much as we did, um, including a lot of their stuff. And um, and you know, we all worked our fingers to the bone to to make sure that that was a huge success. And it was a bloody brilliant success. I'm so proud of it. It's um it was really you know, what what a weekend, you know. The barter barn worked, it raised some money. We ended up on the main stage running running the charity auction, which made a load of money. You know, in total, we've managed to get for that charity, um, either directly or or through our our foolishness, you know, over four and a half thousand pounds, over four and a half grand, which is um which is amazing. You know, that that's an amazing achievement, and we should be really proud of that. You know, it's um we we are just a couple of idiots, a couple of yorkshire guys who like to fool around and be daft, but you know, sometimes when we we turn on the the microphones, the magic happens, doesn't it, Ed?
SPEAKER_02Well, I I hope that it's you know why why we have friends, people like listening to us, like like we've said before on the last week's out. We're not even the funny ones in our group, you know. No, there's some proper comedians that are like hilarious. This is just like you know, second rate kind of stuff. We're we're on the fringes of our groups as the uh we're the warmer packs.
SPEAKER_01But we are the warmer pact, yeah.
SPEAKER_02But hopefully we're just nice people, you know. Nice people is nice people, you know. We're we're quite unassuming, come and chat to us, we'll talk to anybody, and yeah, we'll probably try and make you laugh.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we met a lot of listen, a lot of listeners, a lot of people that that you know I wasn't expecting to meet, but some really nice people who are who are listeners to the show, which is still blows me away that people listen to this this show, and um, and it is it is great. Most tents here are synthetic materials and are freestanding. Anyways, as always, the two of you are good for a laugh and to see different gear options and ways of doing things. If you're ever in Crescent Beach, we lived on the corner of Beecher and Mackenzie, uh, a little bakery there that my dad had for uh 1984, 1985. Yeah, so it was uh formative and stays with us.
SPEAKER_01We love British Columbia, yeah, yeah, very dear to our hearts. It's um so that's cool. That's cool as.
SPEAKER_02Absolutely cool as. Now, the only problem is with something that is a success, and you know, whether or not uh we we've agreed that we uh could potentially or would potentially do the auction next year. Yeah, um I I've got a little bit of fatigue uh about whether or not you know what, when something's such a a good laugh and a success, so it's not the good laugh that um I I mine so much because I love that, that's what I uh uh live for, really. Always a good laugh, always with good people, always uh make new friends, brilliant. Um, it's just whether you know we have deliberately emptied our sheds of our stuff.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's um it's it's not necessarily going to be possible to do the bar to barn ever again because it took us 20 years to collect all of those bits of kit and they're gone now. So we don't have anything to seed it with. And um, and a few people have said, Oh, again, like you said earlier, you could contact some brands and see if they'll give you stuff. We will literally end up with a load of water bottles and you know, stuff that they don't want to pay to store and they're not going to sell anymore.
SPEAKER_02So, you know, it's I think I think what made it really interesting in that first bit was that there was some gold on our store.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, there really was. There really was.
SPEAKER_02And how do we do that? Loads of people said, Oh, they'll bring us some really stuff if it's here next year. And I so what I would say is uh tickets for the Bushcraft show are gonna go on sale. You get some great discounts uh over this next month or so.
SPEAKER_01They they generally do that so that you get to do a real early, early bird discount price.
SPEAKER_02And I would worth looking at the there is no hesitation in me that I don't want to be there next year. Uh so you know, for listeners, get yourself a bargain, buy early, get a discount, those will be going up. Watch that space. For those of you that do have tickets when it's coming around next year, look at the website because they did give us advertising, even though you didn't seem to notice it, they did give us advertising, we've advertised it. There was uh uh quite a few things about that. So just pay attention as to whether or not that is happening. I'm sure it'll happen in some form or another because it was successful, whether or not it's Tim and Aid that's doing it, or whether it's uh somebody else, uh, and we might just try and enjoy the show because it's a cracking show, and we did feel that we didn't get round uh to see that. Yeah, and and that's the bit that like we did with Outdoor and Social a few weeks ago. If you listen back to some of our podcasts, uh the content that we can get is going around and promoting. You know, I I would have loved to have gone and spoken to the uh um the axe guys, both from Sweden and from Somerset. Yeah. Um, they had forges there, there were people that were selling knives, making knives. You could actually go on courses with the forges and the blacksmith.
SPEAKER_01I would really like to do that if we go next year. Is I've been desperate to go to a forge and make something, even just like a little trinket to hold. I um I I would I would really want to book onto the forge, the the old forge, and actually make something and do some of the do some of the fire lighting that you did. I um, you know, we it's it's I feel like I missed out on a couple of stuff. You know, we we saw the great guys at Rika, guys and gals at Rika, um, and they're lovely. And they had an they had a really great setup. We went to their um cheese and pork night, which was awesome, and um, and they had a great setup of stalls, but I never got back to the stalls in the daytime to actually look round and talk to them and see stuff because we were just so busy.
SPEAKER_02It's isn't it so interesting uh that you know that that is the case? So and we did you know uh Curtis and Paz they were saying that's why we don't work them anymore because you just don't get to see stuff.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. So we'll we'll definitely be there next year because they've already asked us if we would do the auction next year. So uh in in some capacity, Tim and Aid will be representing casual camping podcast at the Bushcraft show. I think we'll definitely be doing the auction, we'll definitely be better prepared than we were, and we'll we'll be all singing and all dancing, and it'll it'll move a lot slicker. Um, and it's uh but it will still be fun. It is still well, right? Yeah, who am I kidding? Who am I who am I kidding? It'll be chaos as everything else is that we do.
SPEAKER_02And I and I hope that they're taking uh good long time off because putting on a show like that is incredible.
SPEAKER_01And again, hats off, you know, there's lots of people to say thank you to, but hats off to the entire volunteer crew at the Bushcraft Show who were working tirelessly in 35 degree heat for days, you know, people sitting on chairs, making sure that people don't didn't walk down the wrong path, and people emptying bins and doing all sorts of stuff. You know, hats off to all of those people, the un the unsung heroes of any of any festival are the people of the volunteers who are doing those jobs, and um to do that in such blistering heat is um you know, hats off to them.
SPEAKER_02Re really, really good. So, yeah, you know, but uh big thank you to um you know everybody at the Bushcraft Show that you know that's the uh attend. As well as the stall holders that came. I got to see uh guy called uh David Fryers who was on our stall, didn't trade anything, but yeah, uh his in his setups and Instagram posts have been inspiring me for uh years, and I did kind of think have I inspired him or is he yeah, no, it's definitely the other way around, but you know, I was hoping, you know, in my little daydream as I'm making fire, but he didn't do the triple triple threesome, what was it?

SPEAKER_01Ah, lovely, lovely. That should inspire you to get out and do some bushcrafting, to do some, or if not bushcrafting, just get a blowtorch out and light a fire. That's that's what that's what I did on Sunday night.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, well, I I think that is uh the thing, isn't it? You know, as needs must. If you've got time and you have a skill that you want to maintain, you know, if you've got a skill, you've got to maintain it. Gets harder if you don't maintain it, like a language, like anything else. But then again, you know, I'm going camping on Friday. Uh just a quick one nighter. And you know what? Am I going to use a bow drill to light a fire? Well, I might be showing off, but you did maybe not.
SPEAKER_01You did get traded a bow drill, didn't you?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, uh, it was given from Dean's. Dean gave you a bow drill. He said you don't have one. I went, no, I need to go buy one. He went, No, I'm gonna give you one. I've made that. That was that was really cool. That was a really cool thing. Yeah, yeah. So it's in Pride of Place. I've tried it at home. Uh not fully, I've just like, look, I did it, and you do it like this, but you know, I've not really set it up, so I will be doing that this week just to make sure that I maintain it.
SPEAKER_01That's cool, that's cool. And I really like Flint and Steel. Um, that's that's uh I've I've really liked making fires with that, but on Sunday night uh it was starting to get a bit chilly, and we just um we got the blowtorch out, which is not Sunday night.
SPEAKER_02You were at the bushcraft show on Monday night.
SPEAKER_01No, we came home on Monday.
SPEAKER_02Oh, right, sorry, I thought you were meaning in your uh garden, but yes, I was there once.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, sorry, yeah, yeah, you were there.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, you were there, Ed. I wasn't there, I I was quite drunk off having to be made uh to get on stage and do an auction. I didn't want to do it, uh, and I do need to check. You know, when uh um something when somebody asks you something, you can say no to him.
SPEAKER_01I just need to know when David, who uh runs the Bushcraft show, is walking past you at pace with a worried look on his face and and said, We've been let down by someone um and we thought you and your brother could do the auction for us. You can't really say no to David, it's not possible. It's um so it's so it was a yes, and then I literally felt like I'm glad that we were there and could help out.
SPEAKER_02Um but that worried little boy in me was like yeah, uh what?
SPEAKER_03Uh have to get a bad stage, people but it was good fun, wasn't it?

SPEAKER_02We're going to the outdoor trade show.
SPEAKER_01We're going up to Liverpool, Liverpool to see all the stuff that nobody can buy for 12 months, all next year's amazing new innovative equipment, so um, which will be next week's episode. So uh something to to wet your appetite there. That's gonna be it's it's it's the show I look forward to the most. You know, there are a lot of twice.
SPEAKER_02I only went for the first time last year. Yeah, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I think we know a few more people, so it'll be a good laugh. And Tim, if there's one thing I wish for, it's it's could we stay over and maybe get drunk?
SPEAKER_01Aid, I've booked a hotel. We're doing two whole days at at um OTS, and uh and yeah, we're we're probably as we found out at um the outdoor and social, this outdoor crowd can drink. So let's join them again.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so we we're meeting up with Richard, we're gonna see some new stuff. Uh we're gonna talk about the things that we can talk about. We'll keep our lips stum uh for the things that we can't talk about. I've heard that there might be something that you know there's some NDAs about.

SPEAKER_01It makes for two very excited casual campers. Uh it's uh yeah, looking forward to seeing a lot of people that we've met a few times now. Um, Mark Ashton, shout out to Mark who's been very good and supportive of the show. It's um it's gonna be it's gonna be cracking, isn't it?
SPEAKER_02And and you know what? Um a final shout out to uh Chris from Van Gogh. Yeah. Uh because uh while uh you've been uh having an adventure with the small little tents, you sent a little titanium flask down, and they're from Scotland, so there's a lot of whiskey that they sort of arrive with generally uh just to keep the crowds going and stuff. Uh on a night. This is outdoor and social, I'm talking about. But he remembered that I don't like it, sent me a little uh uh tiny flask of uh brandy. So what a lovely, lovely, lovely gift. So hopefully we can uh buy him a pint and uh you know get get a bit merry and go, ah the the aim is I need you to be caterpillaring. Oh right. Oh, you know you're drunk when you're caterpillaring.
SPEAKER_01No, it's gonna be cracking. It's gonna be cracking. All right, then everybody. Think take home messages, think about doing your own bartering with your mates. If you're going out and in a big group of you, all just bring a few bits of extra kit, put them on a blanket and do some trades, because um, you know, we uh that's what it's all about. You know, give that gear an extra life, let someone else have a play with it.
