Darren:

All right, Coraline Mass, are you okay with being recorded on a podcast?

Coraline:

Yes.

Darren:

Well, there goes that liability. This is I Took a Hike. I'm your host, darren Mass, founder of Business Therapy Group and Parktime Wilderness Philosopher. Here we step out of the boardrooms and home offices and into the great outdoors, where the hustle of entrepreneurship meets the rustle of nature. In this bonus episode, we follow along the inspirational trail of my four-year-old daughter, coraline Mass. Our topics include little leg motivation, counting the ABCs of life using our senses, and leaves, lots of leaves. I'm a very proud dad when I took a hike with Coraline Mass. Is this your first hike? Yes, yeah. What are you looking most forward to on a hike?

Coraline:

I don't know.

Darren:

You don't know. Well, what do you think you're going to find on a hike?

Coraline:

Horses.

Darren:

You're going to find horses and birds and birds.

Coraline:

Can I see one right now?

Darren:

You see a bird. What kind of bird is it?

Coraline:

I don't know A robin.

Darren:

A robin. That's a cool bird. So, coraline, how old are you? Four, four, do you like being four? Yeah, what do you like about being four?

Coraline:

My sister treats me nicely.

Darren:

Your sister treats you nicely when you're four. Yeah, yeah, what else do you like about being four?

Coraline:

Because you give me candy.

Darren:

I give you candy. What kind of candy do I give you?

Coraline:

You give me chocolate.

Darren:

Oh, I do. What's your favorite chocolate?

Coraline:

Chocolate with vanilla in it.

Darren:

Chocolate with vanilla in it. Yes, I don't know which chocolate this is.

Coraline:

It's caramel.

Darren:

It's caramel. Okay, so I give you chocolate vanilla caramel in a bar or in a little kiss.

Coraline:

In a little kiss.

Darren:

Ah, okay, I have found that. You know what I see on this trail over here, over here. Do you see that pile over there? Do you know what that is? No, take a guess.

Coraline:

Pineapple.

Darren:

Nope.

Coraline:

Poop.

Darren:

Poop, that's horse poop. Yep, I guess we might see some horsies after all. Are you excited to see the deserted village?

Coraline:

Yeah, is that what a horse needs poop like.

Darren:

Yes, big blobs.

Coraline:

Big, big blobs.

Darren:

Is that funny to you?

Coraline:

Yes.

Darren:

Yeah, what's the funniest word you know?

Coraline:

It has big blobs and poop down in the tail.

Darren:

Yeah, what's the funniest word you know?

Coraline:

A cow poop.

Darren:

Cow poop. Yeah, okay, those are two words, though.

Coraline:

How do cow poop poop?

Darren:

They just lift their tail and go plop Like horsies yeah, like horsies and doggies and everyone else. They have a house here, yeah, there's a house here, yeah, and we're going to come up across a deserted village.

Coraline:

Where.

Darren:

It's coming, you'll see it. So what other animals do you think you're going to see on this hike? Bunnies, bunnies. You think bunnies are going to be in the forest?

Coraline:

I think so.

Darren:

Okay, are you going to try to hug a bunny? Yeah, okay, do you hear the birdies?

Coraline:

Sure.

Darren:

Yeah.

Coraline:

What's this? Is that a hole?

Darren:

That is. I think that's the ranger station.

Coraline:

What is a ranger station?

Darren:

That's where the ranger lives.

Coraline:

What's a ranger?

Darren:

The person who helps maintain and clean up the park. He's like the forest police officer.

Coraline:

Oh, is he the one who cleans up?

Darren:

Yes, well, maybe Sometimes we all have to clean up.

Coraline:

What do they do?

Darren:

Well, they walk around and make sure that the park is safe for everybody. Oh is that another way to do one.

Coraline:

Yes, oh, and we all have to do our part.

Darren:

Why do they have so many rooms? Hey, we all have to do our part. When you see litter, we got to pick it up and throw it out, right?

Coraline:

Why is it so many? Why is there so many rooms?

Darren:

Because there is.

Coraline:

Maybe it's a appointment. Yeah, all right. Wait, what if a person goes in there? What is an ranger? What if they go in?

Darren:

Maybe the ranger will make them some tea.

Coraline:

Wow, that's a big house it is. It's a ranger's house.

Darren:

It is. Are those little?

Coraline:

Do they, do they sleep there? No, they when did they sleep then?

Darren:

They probably go home to their house.

Coraline:

What if we walk down there?

Darren:

Well, you're not going to because that's a big stream bed.

Coraline:

What.

Darren:

Yeah, that stream comes down there. You see how it pushed all of those big rocks. When it rains, this fills up with water. You don't want to be caught in there when it fills up.

Coraline:

What if it didn't fill up and I fell in here.

Darren:

Well, I'm not going to let you fall in, but if you did, I would come and save you.

Coraline:

Maybe you get a rope.

Darren:

I don't need a rope, I would climb down. So, coraline, let's talk about.

Coraline:

What if I go right there?

Darren:

Let's talk about.

Coraline:

What if I fall right there?

Darren:

You won't fall there. I won't let you.

Coraline:

What if I fall right there? If I fall right there, I can easily get back up.

Darren:

Well, you'd also have to fall while holding my hand, and I don't think I'm gonna let you go. So, core line, let's talk about success. Do you think you're successful at four years old? Yeah, yeah. Why do you think you're so successful? No, that's just a person. Oh, why do you think you're so successful?

Coraline:

I don't know.

Darren:

Okay, well, are you good at school? Yeah, are you happy? Yeah, yeah. Why are you so happy? What makes you so happy? Because we have dogs. No, we're gonna go down this way. So what about the dogs makes you the most happy? They lick you. Well, that would make me happy too, yeah, so what are some of the things you do at four years old that makes you really, really proud?

Coraline:

We like to move the cross. We just have to a tiny, tiny bit of water a tiny bit of water.

Darren:

So what do you do?

Coraline:

We move cross, daddy, I know where the water is coming from. That yeah, it's gonna go down and down and down and down.

Darren:

Do you want an adventure and try to cross that stream over there?

Coraline:

Yeah, all right, let's do it because it's rocks and we can cross it.

Darren:

That's right.

Coraline:

Can you, can you carry me across it one, two, three.

Darren:

No, you got to do this on your own. You need a carry across this any big jumps, I'll carry across, but you have to learn to do this on your own with those little tiny legs. Hey, what? Yeah, all right. So what do you see here? Water, water where the rocks Right there. Okay, now how do you think we should go across it?

Coraline:

on the rocks.

Darren:

How about? One foot in front of the next? Okay, but you make sure that you feel first with your foot to make sure the rock isn't too wobbly so you don't fall in. Okay, so here's your first step. Go, good job. You go. One after the next, all right. Step on the big rocks. It's wobbly Okay good job, one foot in front of the next. Wait, pause here. Navigate your path Ready, next path go. You think you can make the rest.

Coraline:

Daddy no.

Darren:

Okay, I got you.

Coraline:

What is that?

Darren:

Hmm, is this a stick?

Coraline:

No, that's off I.

Darren:

Don't know You're going, you're doing it, doing it. Go all the way to the edge. Go all the way to the edge, you can do it. No, I can't get the water right there. You can jump over it. There you go, ready, go, big jump. You did it. How do you feel? Good? Good, all right, we're going uphill this way.

Coraline:

I didn't even get water on me.

Darren:

No, that's because you navigated your path. Did you feel like you have a sense of accomplishment? No, no, why not?

Coraline:

I feel a little scared at first, but now I know you felt scared at first, but now you don't. But Now that I like the past, that I didn't, I feel to say a little bit. And then I then, when I got to the Etter and I didn't have to say okay, but now do you feel like you could do that again?

Darren:

Yeah, so you feel like it was accomplishing Mm-hmm. So you did something really special. I want to do it again. We will do that over there. We well, we have to go back there, so we'll do it again.

Coraline:

Yeah, I, let me go here, go, go back back home right now.

Darren:

No, we have a big hike to do. We have miles and miles of hiking.

Coraline:

Yeah, it was a mile mile. What if I get tired?

Darren:

Then we could take a break, or we can try to figure out a way back. That's quicker.

Coraline:

Or we can get in the car and go back home.

Darren:

Well, you have to hike back to your car. Remember, when you hike in you have to hike back. So if you're tired when you get to your destination, you're only going to be more tired on the way back. They have to reserve some energy.

Coraline:

Okay, I'm getting energy about it.

Darren:

You're getting energy. It's a good thing we brought bug spray, huh.

Coraline:

Yeah, what if we didn't?

Darren:

Well then, all these bugs would be biting us.

Coraline:

Even the mosquitoes.

Darren:

Yeah, we don't like the mosquitoes.

Coraline:

That's why did you put mosquito on. The mosquito bite on yes.

Darren:

So what's your favorite subject in school?

Coraline:

Playing with my friends.

Darren:

Playing with your friends, you play well with them. What's your favorite game?

Coraline:

Tag.

Darren:

Tag who usually wins?

Coraline:

I do.

Darren:

You do. Why is that?

Coraline:

Because I chase them.

Darren:

You chase them, yeah, and you always tag them, yeah, that's cool.

Coraline:

No, they chase me.

Darren:

Oh.

Coraline:

But they don't tag me.

Darren:

Because why.

Coraline:

Because they're too tired of playing that game.

Darren:

They're too tired to play. Does that mean that you're bad?

Coraline:

So then we play hide and seek.

Darren:

Okay, do they ever find you? Yeah, and do you like? When they find you, mm-hmm. And then what happens? You have to chase them.

Coraline:

Yeah.

Darren:

Very nice.

Coraline:

Then they hide, and then they hide and then I find them. Then they need to chase me. I don't know.

Darren:

You want to go up or left Up Up, all right. This is a big climb. We're going on. Really, dig in, lean forward and use those feet. Good job.

Coraline:

Why does it make steps?

Darren:

It didn't make steps. Nature makes steps. These are the roots from the trees.

Coraline:

Oh.

Darren:

See.

Coraline:

Why is that tree pokey?

Darren:

Well, because it's on a slope and it's about to fall. When are you on my? On my name? Okay, we could write your name at some point.

Coraline:

On a tree. If I'm sticking, you can write it yeah.

Darren:

So what are you most motivated by?

Coraline:

Hmm, wait, I found a sick Right here. Here Can you write my name with the sick.

Darren:

Sure, how's this little dirt patch over here?

Coraline:

Good.

Darren:

Good, how do we spell your name? C? C.

Coraline:

I don't know O.

Darren:

O, c O, what else Uh?

Coraline:

Hmm, I don't know.

Darren:

R R A L I N E. Oh, I'm going to ask you a challenging question, ready, do you think you inspire people? Yes, yes. Why do you think you inspire people?

Coraline:

Because I was a.

Darren:

Because, why Because?

Coraline:

I was a.

Darren:

Because you're love people. Wow, that's really nice. And do you think they're inspired by you? Mm-hmm, they are. What do you think they're inspired most about? Uh?

Coraline:

Because, mm, because they play with me Butterfly, because?

Darren:

they play with you Butterfly. That's a perfect answer. What do you want to be when you grow up? Um Adult, an adult, yeah. Oh, what do you think is so cool about being an adult? You got to care your kids, yeah.

Coraline:

And you got to make them dinner.

Darren:

So you think the coolest part about being an adult is Taking care of kids and making dinner.

Coraline:

Yeah, who Wait? Did someone do that with twerk?

Darren:

Uh, someone carved that tree.

Coraline:

Oh yeah, it's a lot of Tell me you, you can do that.

Darren:

You really shouldn't, because it hurts the tree.

Coraline:

What is? What is someone else doing?

Darren:

Because sometimes people don't think.

Coraline:

And some people want to Wait. A birdhouse Right there, Look at that?

Darren:

What kind of bird lives in there?

Coraline:

Uh, some bug tan go in there.

Darren:

Bugs definitely go in there.

Coraline:

A bug just went my eye.

Darren:

It happens, got to get used to it.

Coraline:

It was a fly.

Darren:

It was a little tiny fly.

Coraline:

What if it goes in your eye?

Darren:

Well then you just blink really fast and it comes out. So what do you want to tell the listeners of this show?

Coraline:

Hmm, can we find a birdhouse right now?

Darren:

We found a birdhouse right now. What else, what do you think is most important or important for a listener to hear?

Coraline:

Well, well then I think, whatever it is, I don't think there is room left. Can you guarantee I would, because I want my sisters to go on a hike with me.

Darren:

You want your sisters to go on a hike with you.

Coraline:

Mm-hmm.

Darren:

Okay.

Coraline:

It was like all of my sisters Wait, is this moth?

Darren:

That is. What else do you think is most important?

Coraline:

A bug when they're my eye again.

Darren:

You think a bug is really important.

Coraline:

Yeah, when they're my eye again.

Darren:

What else?

Coraline:

That uh work. Did someone make that with twerk right there?

Darren:

Yes, that's the trail marker. It's also called a blaze.

Coraline:

Oh, so did they make it with twerk, and that tells us if we're on the right trail.

Darren:

It tells us to go left. It tells us to go right.

Coraline:

They did that again work.

Darren:

Yeah, they did it all over this park. Do you hear the plane?

Coraline:

That's not a plane.

Darren:

So when you're hiking, the reason why it's so amazing is you're using all of your senses Right. Take a deep breath, Smell. You smell the nature. What do you smell?

Coraline:

I smell like trees.

Darren:

What else? Poop? You smell poop, you smell trees. What else? Flowers, flowers, anything else? Uh, a moss, a moss, very good observation. And what do you hear? Uh, the birds, birds. What else? The water, the water, Anything else? No, I hear some wind rustling through the leaves. I hear some wind, yeah, and what do you feel?

Coraline:

I feel like a wind. I feel like a wind. I feel like a wind. I feel like a wind.

Darren:

I feel like a wind, yeah, and what do you feel? I?

Coraline:

feel bugs, you feel bugs.

Darren:

What about the breeze? The chill from the breeze?

Coraline:

Uh-huh.

Darren:

You feel warmth.

Coraline:

I feel moss.

Darren:

You feel moss, anything else?

Coraline:

Not the, and I feel warmth and tree and tree dogs.

Darren:

Yeah, and what do you taste?

Coraline:

I taste like weed and stuff you taste the leaves.

Darren:

Well, we're not really using our taste.

Coraline:

We've got it. I wonder what it is in there.

Darren:

That's probably a raccoon. It's a little dead. And then your last sense. Most importantly, what do you see?

Coraline:

Tree.

Darren:

Tree, what else?

Coraline:

Plants, plants and sticks, sticks, walks.

Darren:

What else?

Coraline:

In the leaves, that's it.

Darren:

That's right. What about that stream? And I see a sleam. And if you look all the way up through the clouds and the trees, what do you see? I see A Sun. What about the thing making that noise? Airplane.

Coraline:

Airplane. And daddy, I know what was in there bunny, oh, a bunny could live in there, so that's why it's important for us to hike Let me feel this again, you're using all your senses. Well, this feels so good.

Darren:

Yeah, which? What are you feeling?

Coraline:

I'm feeling moss.

Darren:

Moss, that's right.

Coraline:

Yeah.

Darren:

Feels good.

Coraline:

There's a big ant on that one.

Darren:

Lots of ants. This is their home.

Coraline:

I'm not going to touch that one because there's an ant on it Probably not wise to touch an ant right now. Yeah, I'm touching this one because there's no ants.

Darren:

Yeah.

Coraline:

Even a nut right on the tail.

Darren:

But you see how important it is for us to be a nature.

Coraline:

She has nuts on here.

Darren:

Oh, maybe a squirrel. You see how important it is for us to be a nature.

Coraline:

I want to go on a long hike.

Darren:

Well, this is kind of a long hike, don't worry.

Coraline:

Can we go on a long hike?

Darren:

We are going on a long hike, good.

Coraline:

Not a short hike.

Darren:

Not a short hike. How many miles do you want to go?

Coraline:

Five.

Darren:

Five miles.

Coraline:

No 10.

Darren:

No, I don't think those little tiny legs can go 10. I can.

Coraline:

They can go 10.

Darren:

Okay, well, this is going to be a long hike, then yeah, a long hike. Well, we're almost a mile in. Believe it or not, those little legs are walking yeah this money. What do you think is really important when you're hiking, walking, walking, yeah, how about looking where you're going? Yeah, how about looking where you're going.

Coraline:

I'm feeling trees.

Darren:

Feeling trees. You don't want to do that to too many plants. Here's why Some of those might be poisonous. We want to look out for poison ivy. Don't worry, that was not, but I'm going to point out poison ivy too, so you never, ever ever touch it, not even by mistake.

Coraline:

Okay, what if it's just a tree?

Darren:

If it's the tree, that's fine, but you want to make sure you identify the plants that you're touching.

Coraline:

Can you tell me if it's poison ivy?

Darren:

I will tell you if it's poison ivy, Is that poison ivy? No, poison ivy usually grows on a vine, or it always grows on a vine, because it is a vine it's usually coming from, and around a tree it's got leaves of three, so three leaves. One of the leaves is slightly bigger than the other two and it looks like this. It's like a triangle. So there's one, two and three.

Coraline:

Does it look like that? Is that poison?

Darren:

ivy. No, that's not. That's part of a tree, it's okay, and the stem is usually a little red on the newish Can.

Coraline:

I feel that, can I feel that?

Darren:

And lastly, the leaves are a little bit rigid or jagged. So I'm going to point some out because it's funny.

Coraline:

Daddy, we'll get that leaf.

Darren:

That's a cool leaf.

Coraline:

Yeah, and that one.

Darren:

Yeah, lots of leaves, so we're going to find some poison ivy.

Coraline:

Daddy, I want to see that leaf, what it looks like on the back. Okay, wow, it looks brown on the back.

Darren:

It's going to fell, so it's not alive anymore.

Coraline:

Wow, is this alive?

Darren:

The wetter. Hold on to that special leaf. We're going to find some poison ivy and I'm going to show you what it looks like which is not going to touch it.

Coraline:

Is this poison, ivy?

Darren:

No, that's just a maple leaf.

Coraline:

Oh, does maple leaves look like that? Is that a maple leaf? Yeah, colorful leaves, or those maple leaves. They are. Is it colorful or are they maple leaves?

Darren:

Well, they get colorful when they lose its chlorophyll.

Coraline:

Chlorophyll is what makes it green. This one is colorful, not the poison ivy.

Darren:

Nope, that's not.

Coraline:

The poison ivy is your wand.

Darren:

Oh yeah, you do not want poison ivy Ever.

Coraline:

Are we going back right now?

Darren:

No, we're going down another trailhead.

Coraline:

Oh, it's not. This is back. Are we going to go up that ramp?

Darren:

Yeah, that's a bridge.

Coraline:

For the water, you don't step in it.

Darren:

Hold on. Do you think that you can cross this bridge on your own?

Coraline:

Yeah.

Darren:

OK, go, dad, I come Coming. You found the orange marker. Yeah, it's right there. What does that tell us?

Coraline:

It tells us we're going the right, we're going the right direction.

Darren:

Yeah, point to it. We are going in the right direction.

Coraline:

Dad, this is O3-2.

Darren:

Well, that would have been a telephone pole that they probably repurposed just to make a trailhead. Oh, that's a good thing.

Coraline:

And this is a telephone pole.

Darren:

So, baby, do you have any heroes?

Coraline:

Yes who? Uh, my sisters.

Darren:

Close to them, uh-huh. Why are they your hero?

Coraline:

Because sometimes they play with me.

Darren:

Oh, ok, that's your order.

Coraline:

And then if one of my toys have a booboo, they help them.

Darren:

Do you miss your sisters? Uh-huh yeah, they'll be home soon.

Coraline:

Not that way, because that's the way we just went.

Darren:

You have a really good sense of direction. You must get that from your mama. Go this way.

Coraline:

Which way are we going now?

Darren:

Watch out for the mud. Yeah, there you go. Always look forward, and a little bit slightly down.

Coraline:

What if there's a poop, hoist poop, then you don't step in it, yeah don't step in it. You go around.

Darren:

Go around.

Coraline:

You go right here, and if there's a poop right there, you go right here. Yeah, where is it?

Darren:

Stay out of there, bitch. Why? Because you never know if this boy's not even there.

Coraline:

OK, let's go. I was gonna dig in there If there was, if there was, if there was a cricket. Was there, Dad? What is that?

Darren:

What, what it's a rock.

Coraline:

There's lots of colorful weeds on this.

Darren:

There's lots of everything out here.

Coraline:

So much colorful weeds.

Darren:

What have you learned so far on this hike?

Coraline:

Finding colorful weeds. Daddy, get me a sunny yeah, we're going to go.

Darren:

Can we go swim today? Yeah, for sure.

Coraline:

Can we get me a sunny yeah?

Darren:

Do you want to go to the fair too? Yeah, fairies, get me some animals. Yeah, we are animals. What's your favorite animal? Horse, horse.

Coraline:

I want a sea horse.

Darren:

OK.

Coraline:

I want a sea horse.

Darren:

You want a sea horse, like as in a sea horse, or you want to see a horse.

Coraline:

Like a real horse.

Darren:

A real horse, but not a sea horse. Yeah, ok.

Coraline:

I wonder why this bridge is here. Because of the water, yes.

Darren:

You have to walk over the water. It's a nice trail, huh.

Coraline:

Mm-hmm.

Darren:

How are your legs doing Good Good? Are you motivated?

Coraline:

No.

Darren:

No.

Coraline:

That means I'm not even tired.

Darren:

No, motivated doesn't mean that you're tired, not. Do you want to keep going? Do you feel good about yourself?

Coraline:

Yes, I want to keep going.

Darren:

All right, let's hike up this mountain and get to where we're going. Ready, are we focused? We're on a mission. Now, right, what's the mission? Going home, no, getting up this mountain One foot in front of the next. That's how you do it.

Coraline:

Wow, I thought of putting.

Darren:

Hey, core line. All right, look here there's poison ivy when, right here. You see those leaves growing on this tree. Here the three leaves. All right, you see how they're growing on that vine. Ok, sometimes they grow on the floor because they stretch out. Ok, see three leaves. They're a little bit shiny. There's one main one that's longer than the other two. The branch that connects the leaves is slightly red and the leaves are a little jagged. You touch that and you'll get very itchy. So we're never going to touch that.

Coraline:

Daddy, is that poison, ivy?

Darren:

That was poison, ivy. Yes.

Coraline:

Is that poison ivy on that tree.

Darren:

No.

Coraline:

That's a white ball.

Darren:

Oh wait, yeah, that's poison ivy right there too.

Coraline:

Hey Daddy, hey what. I know what this is from. Someone maybe walked a toy. Maybe yeah, they maybe walked a truck. They're like little yellow truck toys yeah.

Darren:

All right, we're doing it. We're almost up this mountain. Keep going, Keep going. Have any more words of wisdom for us? No, OK, you getting tired? No Good, I like that. Lots of energy, right? Yeah, it's giving me so much energy. Here we go. More poison ivy Ready. See this hairy vine Now it's fuzzy that right there attaches itself to the tree and it grows up this tree. It eventually chokes a tree. You know why that vine has a cut in it? Because someone who works here is really nice cut the vine which kills the poison ivy above it.

Coraline:

Oh.

Darren:

But it's still poisonous.

Coraline:

So someone's been very nice and they kill the poison ivy.

Darren:

But it's still poisonous. Here, actually, come here. This, right here, that right, there is poison ivy. This one. See how it comes out Slightly red on the inside. Don't touch with your foot, it's fine. It's my foot. One, two, three. The main one is a little bit longer and bigger than the others. It's a little jagged, shiny.

Coraline:

Are you only allowed to touch it with your foot?

Darren:

because you have so long I can, because I know what I'm doing and I don't want you even playing around with it. But that's how dangerous it is. It looks like all the other little plants here. It's all over here.

Coraline:

I'm not going to pick up any more leaves.

Darren:

OK, so what have you learned today on this hike?

Coraline:

Picking up leaves.

Darren:

You learned picking up leaves, so you love picking up leaves. I don't get that leaf. I see it.

Coraline:

I'm going to show you what's in my foot.

Darren:

This is endless supply of leaves.

Coraline:

Good job, that leaf.

Darren:

What color is it?

Coraline:

What is the other one that I don't know?

Darren:

God did you learn how to cross the stream?

Coraline:

We need about crossing the stream. We need about seeing if we see poison ivy not touching it.

Darren:

Anything else? No, All right. Well, I think that's a really good job, the fun guy right now. Of course it is. It's a sunny day.

Coraline:

So can we go to the field.

Darren:

Absolutely we can.

Coraline:

Yay.
