Speaker 1:

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Come Compass podcast. So I think, as women, we always want to know how impactful like if I don't really do anything about stress, like what's going to be really the big impact. You know, how does it really play in my day to day life? Like, should I really care? Right, and from one of the last senses in the Australian Bureau of Statistics, they obviously keeping in mind that the beginning of 2020 was the beginning of the pandemic that went on for years and we're not really talking about the impact that had on people's mental health enough and how we, as leaders and workplaces, are supporting out the culture of our employees. Because if you don't support what happens, you push them so hard they take more sick leave. They take more leave without pay because they're so burnt out getting physically sick. They're run down because you're pushing them so much instead of going.

Speaker 1:

Well, actually, we need to look at the whole structure of our workplace. Maybe during certain times of the year we can see that and you can see it in different industries there may be a busier time to project, so you might be looking at okay, well, during this time and this time we actually need to have more staff and more resources, because we know that that's a high risk of burnout and that's a high area of demand and we cannot expect what we are doing now to continue being as effective, because people are leaving, people are getting sick more frequently, they're taking more days off. So if we can look and plan for supporting the culture of our workplace and you can always see it like when, sometimes, when you're looking at you are a leader and you're looking at where your employees are taking more time off or where you might be getting more work that is the time that, as one of your strategies as a leader, is to actually project what is actually required providing the resources, providing the staff and looking at having an environment where people can take time off and not feeling like they aren't able to do that. And so when we look at from that census in 2020 that what it showed was people were under enormous levels of stress, and this is going to increase if we really do not look at all aspects of supporting people's mental, physical health and how they are responding in that, it's just going to become more of an issue, and sometimes we're concerned always as how much this is going to cost and what we've also got to remind ourselves. If we don't address it early, on providing preventative, it's a much harder thing to look at when people either have disease or chronic health or that a lot of those symptoms have become irreversible. And we need to start, as a society, really looking at how we can support ourselves, how we can support our workplaces, how we can support our family.

Speaker 1:

And women are the primary caregivers a lot of the time. They are usually working, often full time, and they are still the primary caregiver. They're the ones who go oh, johnny has this appointment or Johnny has, you know, these are extra activities and they're it's still usually the mother who is organizing and sees that different plan and takes on that role. And I think as women we want the best. We want the best for our children. We want to make sure that we provide them with all the love and all the support that we can.

Speaker 1:

And sometimes what we've also got to remind ourselves in each moment we're doing the best we can with the resources available and some days the best for us might look different. The best might be that you get out of bed and you have a shower. That may look like the best for you because you are going through so much, the best for you might be that it's going to do some yoga or going for that walk or asking for someone for help. So we've always got to understand that what is one small thing that is going to support my mental health, my physical health, today?

Speaker 1:

Sometimes we start too many habits all at once instead of just looking at those micro changes that we can make today, not waiting for tomorrow. Just what can I do today that is going to support me? It could be eating an apple, right, it could be eating an apple and going okay, well, that's one small thing that I'm in control of and that I know that will help me. So it's making those micro changes and being so kind to ourselves, because we are juggling a lot. We are juggling a lot of responsibilities and it's okay to have a moment to breathe and to work out what you need, what's going to be in the best interest for you for that day, and always moving forward. And every person's journey is always going to look different, so always just comparing your journey to you and what you need.
