Speaker 1:

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Calm Compass podcast. So as I was going for a walk this evening, it really resonated about creating change, that we create 60 to 70,000 thoughts a day, and most of those we've had the day before. So if we keep having recurring thoughts that are not helpful maybe on the negative bias perspective, we keep feeling the same way. And so how do we actually start? When we? Our brain is wired to look at the past, it's looking at evidence, it's getting the data and the information and we keep repeating, we keep becoming the same person each day. And how do we break that habit? As Dr Jo Dispenza says, how do we break the habit of being our selves? And from my perspective, and really what resonated for me when I was going for that walk, is how easy it is to focus on what isn't working in your life. Maybe you're doing something that feels really scary and maybe it's not working to how you would really like it to. And it's so interesting when I speak to so many people and we go into I'll be happy when I'll do that when, instead of actually making way now for that future self and it seems really fluffed in some ways, and maybe it's how it's described and it's understood by you, and it's also about your awareness. So the more aware you are and the more that you are curious to do that work, you keep understanding the importance of looking at what is. So I'm going to give you an example. I'm going to be doing something very, very soon within my business and I was getting I was focusing on what may have gone in the past. Right, I was focusing on those results from the past and that really wasn't helping me in any way at all. So by focusing on the past, I kept noticing those certain behaviors. I kept noticing the same thought patterns that were looping, and so what I did is I decided is what if everything worked out exactly to how I desired? And really going into that now.

Speaker 1:

But what we understand about, you know, changing the way we think and feel, we have to almost trick our mind. First, we have to look at what we have now. So when we are trying to create, for example, more abundance, or we're trying to create something that feels different for us, we have to look at activities or do things that we can have that feeling now, instead of going I'll be happy when, or I'll be happy when I lose weight or, you know, when I get that partner or whatever it is, or that job or whatever, instead of going, what can I do right now in that feeling? What can I be grateful for? And maybe you are in the process of shifting huge things within your life, right, but it just takes that moment of presence. And so, when we are really focusing on what hasn't worked, we're looking at the past, we're ruminating on conversations that we did, maybe things we did say we didn't say, how we were perceived, et cetera. We are creating that same loop, we're creating that same behavior. So we almost have to look at what we notice is working and give ourselves gratitude for that.

Speaker 1:

And so, from a perspective called acting commitment therapy, what that tells us is, rather than focusing to help us shift, is one learning about being aware of the present moment. And it's something that when we are, when we've been programmed let's say it that way when we have been programmed to focus on what hasn't worked, and we've also got to think of yes, this could be part of what you have formed in the past, that has become part of what you believe to be you, but we've also got to look at how society looks at these things, at. We always look at what hasn't worked right, especially in Australia, you know, I was hearing my coach talk about tall poppy syndrome and I have to agree that we don't. We don't. We feel like, oh gosh, if I talk about all the amazing things that I'm doing in my life, people are gonna think X, y and Z, or, for starters, if they do, they do not deserve someone such a beautiful soul like yourself to be in their life. But also, that's such a working progress.

Speaker 1:

So always, when from an act and commitment therapy perspective, what that tells us is awareness is such a key point. So when we notice that we are trying to shift, our identity is just being aware of the present moment, what are we hearing, what are we noticing? What are we hearing, smelling, et cetera. Right, and then and this is something I talk to my clients about always moving in the direction of your values. Okay, so this is just so we're moving away from maybe those fear narratives and we're moving in the direction of what's important. And it's really important to do this work and reflect on what's important and see also where your direction of your life is and if these values support you right.

Speaker 1:

So it's always going when we are shifting and changing our behaviors and to also think differently, feel differently about who we are, about our reality, and maybe we're making big changes. We've got to almost start doing the feeling first. So, rather than waiting until you have the material thing or when you lose something or you get a job or whatever it is, rather than going I'll be happy when, what can you be happy with now? What are you grateful for within yourself? And sometimes that is even such a cultivation of self love and acceptance, because it's not. Sometimes we think we're just going to get there by doing one thing. It's such a journey point, it's such a you know, in a work, and that's where I really wanted to come on this podcast and just talk about.

Speaker 1:

Often we are wanting to create a new perspective, but we really have to understand that many of our thoughts are regurgitated from the day before. So it's almost like we have to do different. We have to feel differently each day of doing different behaviors, doing different actions that are going to create a different behavior. We have to create a different feeling to what we are right. So if we're feeling like we want to feel happy or we want to feel more abundant, and it's looking at what you do have within your life that you notice, or you know it might be that you're so grateful that you have electricity and when we are in lack or scarcity, we have to start training our mind of what we do have available to us, especially in the West, of what you do have, what is working, and it is a cultivation of self love.

Speaker 1:

And when we are building, let's say, building that muscle of shifting how we, how we think and how we feel and creating different results, we do have to do things differently and you sometimes may see on Instagram people talk about what got them to that particular point is not going to be the same actions, behaviors, ways, ways they think to get to another big goal right, and we've really got to take that on board that if you are creating shifts and changes within your life, you have to do things differently. The way that you did things yesterday is not working for you and it's looking at what small changes can I consistently do to feel differently, and it's doing that consistently. So, when I was really noticing that, I was want, focusing on what wasn't working. You know this, this doing huge things within my business. I just started to journal on well, what if it worked out exactly how I was now? You could say, oh, that's not realistic, but really start imagining how that would be. And then I'm starting to notice well, how can I cultivate some of these feelings into my life now? What can I do? What activities, actions can I do to create that feeling? So then it changes the way that I think and approach different things.

Speaker 1:

So I wanted to come on here very sort of coming from my walk. And when we're walking we're activating, where we're creating movement, and movement is that fire and transformation, right? So even if it's not a fast walk, it's still activating and it's still transforming. Right. And we really have to really understand that many of those thoughts and beliefs Maybe they're not working for us. So what new beliefs and behaviors can we start adopting in our life today? So I hope you found that podcast helpful. I would love you to share on your socials and tell us what you found to be the most useful in this episode. Thanks so much.
