The Seven Sorrows of Mary, also known as the Seven Dolors, are events in the life of Mary that caused her great sorrow. The Seven Sorrows are:

  • The Prophecy of Simeon
  • The Flight into Egypt
  • The Loss of Jesus for Three Days
  • The Carrying of the Cross
  • The Crucifixion of Jesus
  • Jesus Taken Down from the Cross

According to a pious tradition, the Blessed Virgin Mary grants seven graces to those who honor her by meditating on her sorrows and saying seven Hail Marys, one for each Sorrow. These graces include:

  • Peace for their families

  • Enlightenment about the divine Mysteries

  • Consolation in their pains

  • Accompaniment in their work

  • Fulfillment of their requests, as long as they do not oppose the will of God or the sanctification of their souls

The devotion to the Seven Sorrows of Mary unites the suffering of the faithful with that of the Blessed Mother.
