This Week on The Hudson Valley Disc Golf Podcast: Alex, Corey, Randy, Ryan Nelson, and Evan join to break down a very busy week (plus) of local action. We caught up on missed results from Renaissance Man Returns 2 in Warwick and Randy and Corey’s rounds at the Discap Flex Series #5 at Prospect Park, Ryan Nelson talks about earning a spot on Team USA for the WFDF World Team Disc Golf Championship in Vilnius, Lithuania and Alex gives an inside look at playing the 2026 PDGA Amateur Disc Golf World Championships in Buffalo. We probably might have also mentioned the winner. 

We also recapped some of the recent Summer Battle Royale matchups, Doubles and weekly League action and where to find the best Rochester garbage plate. We finished it off with a round of Disc or No Disc pitting Alex and Evan against Corey and Ryan.

Renaissance Man Returns II

Yeah, okay. So uh Renaissance Man Returns 2 in Warwick, New York, Jason Murak, tournament director, had 43 players, bunch of divisions here. MA3 mixed amateur three, Dennis Flynn won that, beat Will Burn by a stroke. Bagger Wilburn, MA2, Pete Newland, shot a plus one, won the MA2 division. MA60 mixed amateur 60 had three players under Park. Chris Gurnett, shot a minus one, Tim Mendolia, shot a minus three, and your winner Steve Beckman shot a minus four. MA40, mixed amateur 40, Noah Blanchard, shot a minus one, Jared Secor won it at a minus two. Kelly Turpening won FA1, women's amateur one. There was a tie in MA1. Alex Zanouski and Ryan Fulkertzma. Uh they both shot plus six, but it looks like Ryan won in some sort of playoff. Uh Matt Pappas won MA40, beat Nick Smith and Mr. Mixelplick, beat a guy named Nick S by a stroke, and then MPO looks like Tyler Ferrari shot a minus five for second place, and Leighton Brinster, your winner minus nine. In the MP40 division, Bramwell Thorne from Thomwood Vale, United Kingdom. That's uh Ivan Yvonne Marmota Marmoda. He changes his name with every tournament, apparently. It looks like it's back to Ivan Marmota, so but he played this tournament since it was Renaissance Man, he played it as Bramwell Thorne. That's uh Renaissance Man returns too. Thought it was worth a mention.

Discap Flex Series #5 at Prospect Park

Also, we missed last week was the Discap Flex Series 2026 five of six in Troy, New York, and prospect. Uh Mike Schwartz, tournament director, had 75 players. Had a girls junior FJ 15, girls junior under 15, Luna Pelton won that. FA3 Women's Amateur 3, Martha Aday beat Alyssa Kazlin to win FA3. MA3 Eamon Henshee came in third place, shot even parr. Eamon Foster in second at minus two, and Kenji Klein, your winner. So Kenji's playing disc golf again. That's cool.

Valid point. MA2 mixed amateur two tie for fifth place. Charles Bednarchik and Patrick Jeffries shot minus four. Tie for third place at minus five, Christopher Evanchuk and Brandon Klein. And there was a tie for first at minus six. Daniel Ramsey and Mark Davidson. Marcia Fock won the F-A-60 Women's Amateur 60 division. That puts her at 133 wins career. MA60 mixed amateur 60. Peter Cornish won that, shot even par. Carleta Darling won F-A-50, Women's Amateur 50. Jakeuey won the MA 50 mixed amateur 50 by a stroke over Earl Steinberg. Krista Kovac won F-A 40, women's amateur 40. Uh looks like Joe Karan tied with Todd Everleth at even par for third place in the MA40 mixed amateur 40 division. Terry Hudson shot a minus one for second, and Jordan Kaslin is your winner, shot minus two. MA 1, everybody in the whole uh division shot under par. So Dennis Daly and Dan Perry came and tied for second, minus seven, and Josh Lee is your winner, shot a minus nine.

One crazy thing about that is when I got to the park before my round was right around the time that Dan Perry's card was getting to whole 18, which is right next to the parking lot. I didn't see him throw it, but I heard like some exclamations before got to the basket. And I turned around just in time to watch him ace it, which ended up being meaningful, obviously, because it made him tie Dennis. But as that hit the chains, he just started running it down and you know going crazy. And at one point he's like, Wherever you are on the course, Dennis F you. That on a big FU Dennis, but uh it was a sick ace.

And then he hit hit one the next day or something with the same disc apparently.

MP60, Mix Pro 60, Dave Chaken, and Greg Kurtz tied at minus three. MP50, Mix Pro 50, Dave Herodis came in third place, shot minus one. Ron British tire in second at minus two. And Jeff Darling is your winner, shot minus three. Kathleen Bemis held off Megan Mercier for the FPO win. And Randy, how'd you play? Do you play Prospect very often?

I played it a lot. This year I realized I hadn't played it since maybe the first week or two of dubs. So it had been been a while, but I mean, yeah, over the years I've played it a lot. I did sign up for the wrong division. So that was that was a mistake. But played MPO. Got there with enough time to warm up and just had one of those rounds where things just got a little little wild. Like hole one, I threw it a hundred feet long. Like I threw a normal shot and it just didn't do what it was supposed to do. And that's just kind of how the round went. I got myself a few under par on the front nine after a few goofs early, and then I just hit this little stretch between like holes 10 and 14 where I basically double bogeyed all of those holes. And that has never happened to me. If I'm going into a prospect round, I'm expecting like a bogey, maybe, maybe two on the on that stretch, like 13 and 14 are like super bogeyable. I would never freak out about bogeying either of those holes, but like I doubled both of them. It was just bonkers, but I don't know, didn't give up. I could have easily just continued to like trash my round. And then after I got out of the woods there, I just uh almost birdied out. I got 15, 16, 18. At 18, it was raining. We were the last card. It started to downpour for like our last two holes. And 18 felt good to just finish that round off with like a 45-footer straight down the hill. No reason for me not to run it at that point. I was in last place, anyways, and just managed to make that putt. So ended up being really fun, and I'm just gonna forget about the bad holes in the middle.

Well, you said you you think you played the wrong division. Why would you say that?

Oh, because I shot my worst rating since 2019. It's my first time being under 900 in like a couple years, maybe. Yeah, that's probably why.

I would argue that that was your play, not you. You should you play I think you played the right division.

I know, I know. But it was just funny that the entire, I think, MA1 division also shot under par, and like I I managed to shoot over par at prospect, which I never would have imagined. But hey, I did it.

Absolutely. I mean, you would have came in like seventh place in MA2, but yeah, he's exactly I'm sorry.

No, it was it was a great event. I I really can't complain. I mean, I got a lot of birdies, so like I had fun. It was just the bogies that were wild. Stuff that just, you know, had never happened to me before happened, and then it got worse after I tried to fix it. You played as well, Corey. How'd that go?

Yeah, I was gonna say, Randy, did you not get any weather during your round?

It was just the last, I don't know, maybe three holes, which is somehow where I got birdies. But yeah, it's it started to rain right at the end, like pretty, pretty heavy.

Yeah, I uh I signed up late and sniped the fourth spot in uh the card with Justin Michelli, Megan, and maybe Leighton. Was he playing this? Leighton Scott, yeah. It it was hot as hell, but we when I remember that vividly because I did not bring enough water even for prospect. I thought, you know, prospect, one water bottle be good. Wasn't enough. I started off with two birdies and thought it was gonna be a great round. I don't play prospect that often, and I know like it's it's basically birdie or die, which is kind of tough as I'm coming to this event, it's the last thing before rating update, and I'm trying to pass Michelli. And I just know that uh prospect can be a rating killer. I feel like you could probably plot it out. There's probably a line where like ratings for prospect are just really hard to get without going absolute lights out as far as like what your rating is. But um, I feel like that like locals are just gonna crush that because there's a bunch of holes that are like under 220 or or at least under 250, and a couple of them are kind of janky if you're looking at holes is it 12 and 14, are probably like the the two jankiest ones. Well, 12 being the most janky, but most jankiest? Most jankiest, jankiest of them all.

You gotta so I don't know. I just once I got to the middle section of the course, I was just I wasn't picking up any birdies. I had bogeyed hole five, which is one of the shortest, if not the shortest hole, by just being soft at the teapad and then aggressive later on. That kind of burned me. But they get to play with Justin, who got a ton of birdies. He eagled hole eight, which is a soft par four, but managed to uh myself kind of scrape together a below ever drown. He had a pretty good day. It was fun hanging out with Lane and Megan, you know, seeing Dan's ace, and then from there I was just like, well, Adam and Randy are the last ones to play because they were playing after us, so I kind of kind of watched their scores a little bit as I was also watching this giant storm cloud come from the south to the north as I drove through it and thought, well, they might have a really rough the last few holes.

That point, yeah, probably. I probably came right home with my tackle bell that I probably picked up on the way after and turned the AC on, drank an outlaw light. Like, oh, another double bogey, Randy. Who's whole strategy? But no, I've uh I gotta you gotta shout out Mike Schwartz, which we do this every single time. But I don't know what the first tea time was, and I don't know when the last person left. But to just to be sitting out there in 95 degree weather with 100% humidity for eight hours or whatever it might have been.

If you were to estimate whereabout is the white teapad, if could you describe it?

I would say it's probably halfway from the tea to the basket in between two of those trees that you're kind of throwing around from the long teaped. So it's like a par three? It's a par three, yeah. It's probably like 220. There's some branches you gotta miss and you gotta get up on the rock. Nice.

But it's not out in the field, it's on the other side of the trees.

It's like in line with those trees. So, like, yeah, it's like in line with them. There's basically like three, there's like three sets of trees there. There's like the long ones that people are trying to get to to have an easy approach in the long. There's the middle tree that is like short of that spot, and then there's actually another shorter tree that's like 60 feet short of that one. But I'm sure that doesn't make any sense for anyone that doesn't know the hole, but it's definitely not a gimme tree. If you do, it helps. Yeah. That's actually a good point, Ryan, because I'm sure people have played hundreds around at J Park, and one didn't know that there was white T's, or two didn't know where to find them because at least this one was just like some old bricks in the ground.

a couple weeks. Let's pause a minute and take a look at some of the results from the last week in disc golf. On Monday, we had Gunks dubs. Max Horowitz and Brian Hauser came in second place, they shot a minus five. Purple Phil and Dave Irving are your winners, they shot minus seven. Saratoga Spa Random Dubs, week 19, presented by 80k discs. Cody Canine and Joe Carron came in third place with a minus 14. Jacob the Butler, Bethel, and Emily Jackson in second at minus 16, and Aaron Hopey and Ryan Clary are winners, they shot minus 18. Colonial Acres dubs had a three-way tie for first place. Peter Fitzisti and Stephen Gaylord shot a minus 11. So did Kevin Newen and Mark Bryan, and Christopher Evanchuk and Larry B. They shot at minus 11 as well. Prospect Park doubles from last week. Mark Davidson and Leighton Scott came in third place at minus 12. Adam Nelson and Nick Alcatraz at Katz in second at minus 14. And Josh Lee and Brooke Arnold are your winners, they shot minus 15. We play J North, which I'm sure fended off a lot of people, but I believe that's the last time we're doing it with the time dwindling down. And that was week 20, so we're really getting to the asset of the of the league. Dennis Daly, Harry Lehman took it down with a nine down, beating out James Scow and Justin Mucelli, who shot a seven down for second place. Tim Goyet did manage to take the cash CTP on hole 19. And I think it was their card that messed up putting down the CTPs, or at least the first one, because um walking down hole 15, which was a free CTP hole, I found both flags just sitting in the fairway, like they fell out of somebody's bag. So we didn't do a free CTP that day, but that actually didn't do much for the leaderboard as far as the top 10 sets. For we 21, we're playing JE South, and probably the last time we're playing at 5.30. Yeah, I think probably starting the 25th, we're probably gonna start at 5.15.

Uh yeah, top five of the season actually pretty interesting. Here Lehman's at 19 events, reminder, top 18 count. So he he's at 278. Justin Mucelli has also hit the 18 mark, and he's at 272, so there's a six-point spread there. I'm in third with 20 events at 237, just ahead of Brian Bickersmith, who has 229, but he's only got 16 events, so he's got two more events coming in that are full points. And then fifth place, we have Jake Orsage with 226 points and 17 events.

So how many total weeks do you play?

26, I believe. I mean, really, at this point, it's this it's a two-horse race between Harry and Justin. I mean, this literally could come down to if someone can get an ace in these last few weeks. I know Justin's lead trying to go for the four peat, I believe, and and Harry is a previous multi-year winner. So yeah, that's gonna be an interesting finish of the season.

They shot minus 14. CTA Handicap League had a three-way tie for third. Rick Steeler, Ryan Travis 148, 343, and Jim Robertson shot plus one to their handicap. Tom McGuckin in second shot even, and your winner Jim Burns shot three strokes better than his handicap. Kisko Tuesday doubles. We were playing an ultimate tournament and we had like a 30 rack per person, and the campus police rolled up and told us it was a dry campus. And luckily, yeah, uh we were an alumni team and we were all over 21, so they just let us leave, but they took all our IDs first and told us to never come back. So we did not win that that tournament.

Yeah, I've played a tournament out there probably like four or five times, like through all of college, and then as an alumni, and then it was over. But yeah, uh, there's like a chain, so this is probably just a touristy answer, but like the one I went to is Henrietta Hots. It was like the town of Henrietta right outside of Rochester. So the hots, I guess, chain, those at least hit the spot after a day of being outside.

Excellent. And what's the what's like the the proper way to order it? Is there like a because I I've saw there's like a whole bunch of different types of plates. You can get like a Reuben plate, you can get like, but isn't it just like meat sauce on the stuff build it from the ground up?

So like mac and cheese, fries, and then you pick your like protein to like slap on top of it. And so you can basically just like build a cheeseburger if you want that you can just shovel into your face, or you can get a little bit weirder and get like colesla and like mac salad on it or something. So yeah, it's just basically a ton of sides with meat sauce slopped on top of it.

It's like a deconstructed American cookout burrito bowl. Something like that, Gary. I want everything but the bun and throw it onto a plate.

Just sounds like American nachos, just meat sauce on a whole bunch of American sides, which sounds incredible. So but that's not the reason I'm going to Rochester. That's just, you know, among the things that I gotta do when I go out there. My wife and I wanted to go see the Odyssey in 70 millimeter IMAX. And there's only a bunch of theaters that like do that in the US, like the traditional film. And so we looked at like going to Union Square, which you know, I can take the train to down to Manhattan, but like everything's booked for like months out. And so my wife found seats in Rochester at their 70 millimeter IMAX. So we booked that like last week and found an excuse, you know, just we're just like, we'll just make a weekend out of it. And uh so we got like a a little like lake joint at one of the finger lakes up there, and that's like 35, 40 minutes from Rochester. So we're gonna be there this weekend just to see the Odyssey, which would be pretty sweet.

I think mine is the one no one mentions, and it's called Shore Winds, and it's like a state park property, and it's massive. There's 36 holes. It's like a chucker's delight. You're right on Lake Ontario the whole time, so there's like wind coming across it, like directional wind. So I threw my furthest throw ever, like on flat ground there just by like playing the wind. I threw like 600 something feet. It was really fun, and it landed near the basket generally. So I don't know. It's worth playing once if you're in Rochester.

Okay. The two courses I used for states was Parma and um Shadow Pines. Shadow Pines is like on like an old golf course, I believe. And Parma was well, you could watch videos.

So yeah, last year I like on a whim applied on the PDGA website to be considered to be on Team USA for the World Team Disc Golf Championship, which is in Lithuania this year in September. Funny enough, like in February, when I was at the Olympics, you know, watching hockey and everything, I literally got the call from the PDGA that was like, hey, you know, you're next up on the list if you're still interested in competing in the Team Disc Golf World Championship. So I was like, hell yeah, I'm still interested. So that's what I'll be doing September 3rd through the 10th, basically, is going out to the capital of Lithuania called Vilnius for like a five-day international competition. Do you know like what they're gonna do? What's the format? Well, it's funny because it you know, we're less than a month away from the tournament, and most of the details are ironed out in terms of like logistics-wise, like we know when the practice days are going to be, what they've arranged for like food and lunch at the course, and you know, rosters are are all submitted and stuff like that. I had to take like a five-hour long anti-doping test because it's like an international competition that's hosted by Wiff Diff, that's like the IOC recognized frisbee organization. So, like, in order to compete internationally in a Wiff Diff thing, you have to literally like take the same test that like Olympic athletes do for like anti-doping. So I had to like take five like a five-hour course and pass that. Well, how much was that? No, that it was free. Oh it was free. No, no, no. Yeah, yeah. It's it was it was free. But it was it was definitely time consuming. Like you had to learn about like all the different rules, not just for players, but like trainers and stuff like that. And I'm like, trainers.

You know, what's funny is it does it it says that like you know, because this is under like Wada, the World Anti-Doping Agency, they could spot check players if they wanted to. Like the local organizing committee or the or like the WADA local committee or whatever local body for Lithuania or Europe, like could drug test people, which is interesting. So I mean, obviously a lot of players were like, Well, what the hell does that mean? And there apparently there's like medical use exemptions that you have to file. So uh there's been a lot of chatter in the uh the WeChat about uh about medical use exemptions for certain certain things. The competition itself, it's like team-based, so very similar to like team challenge. There's a pro team and there's a masters team, and there's uh something like 11 or so players on each team. Um so there's like eight MPO players on the pro team and three women on the pro team, and there's like 32 different countries going. There's four matches happening per game. Two of the matches are going to be singles, and I don't know if it's stroke play or match play, they haven't haven't said, but it's like four seated. So like MPO1 Lithuania will play MPO1 USA, MPO2 would play MPO two, and then they'll do a doubles match where it might be like your FPO two and your MPO4 versus their MPO4 and FPO two. So there's a little bit of strategy there because you're only rostering, I guess, six players from your team per game, so you're gonna have a bench, and they do like the force ranking, and it's just by rating. So I'm like the third worst on the team, but it's possible that if we're playing a weak team, they might actually you know start the bottom half of the roster, and I'll I would be like the MPO2 for that match or for that game. So it should be pretty interesting. I'm actually excited to not have have to play like every match because like I can't remember the last time that I played disc golf like eight days in a row. I feel like my body's gonna fall apart. So I'm looking forward to the rest to be able to sit out certain matches for sure.

Okay, interesting. So there's apparently two courses. They're at like Puckerai Park, which I think means the pilgrim or something. It's like park style, 18 holes, and then they have like a five-hole little loop of some sort. So I think that they're they're gonna build two eighteen-hole courses that are on like in that park. So you're you're gonna be in the same venue, you know, for the entire competition. But I guess they're setting up something temporary for the other 18, which should be pretty cool. But I was looking at like the Udisc pictures for the park itself, and like some of them have turf pads, some of them don't have pads. So I'm hoping that they, you know, put something down for some of these holes, especially if it's like muddy uh and rainy, but it should be interesting. But overall, the course the course looks fun, it looks very park-like, like an FDR or something like that. It's interesting. Apparently, they're going to be live streaming it, like on the PDGA website or something like that. So there's uh Pulsea Disc Golf and Wiff Diff and the PDGA are doing live coverage with like the Parade of Nations and the opening ceremony and the medal ceremony, uh, and live coverage of at least for the pro side throughout the competition, which should be pretty cool. We just got like an email from the PDGA guy about like, hey, we need to know what your like notable achievements and sponsors and stuff are. I don't think they would accept uh like won the 2024 made in the glades while blackout drunk for round two. I don't think that's gonna make the coverage. So I I gotta find I gotta find out so I gotta find some cool stats to uh to put in there.

Like this is the sixth time they've done the the Team Disc Golf World Championship. It's been in like Australia, in Estonia, in the UK, and I know a couple of guys that have done it previously. Oh man, I can't remember the name of the guy. There's a there's a guy in New Jersey, he he helped to uh to save the course down there near Philly, Stafford Woods.

And my rating's pretty good right now, just because I had a couple of really good like tournaments last year. So I you know, I I was up there. But yeah, there's really no like pros. Like Leah Siagini, Sinogenny is gonna be on the uh the pro team, so she's one of the FPO players, but yeah, the highest rated guy is Chris, and he's he's a thousand nine, and then everybody else is like also just around like a thousand rated. One of the guys is actually an Amherst guy. Have you guys heard of James Cairn?

There's like stipend for food and for stuff when we're over there. They actually got some really sweet jerseys. We're each getting like four t-shirt type jerseys with like this, you know, sweet team USA, you know, get your name on the back and everything, and the logo, and we're getting these awesome like sun hoodies as well. You could order extras. So, of course, my entire family, like some of my friends, wanted a bunch. So the swag is pretty cool. So I'm excited to have like Fourth of July outfits for the next foreseeable future. Because they're all decked out in red, white, and blue, which should be pretty sweet.

So the the guy that called me when I was in Milan, he's actually a friend of mine, which you know you would think, okay, so that's how you got on the team, Ryan. But he's like, no, seriously, like you're next up on the list if you want to play. This guy, Nick Wilder, used to live in Easton, uh, where I was out in uh in Pennsylvania, and he actually got a job. He used to work for the um the Iron Pigs, which is like, you know, a triple A baseball team. I think it's in Bethlehem or something like that, maybe Allentown. And he did like all of their like promotional stuff in marketing. He actually staged a tournament that we did at the stadium, at the Iron Pig Stadium, which was pretty cool. But he got a job down at the PDGA and he's one of the like the membership coordinators. So he like manages the membership program. So obviously when Doug Bierkus came in and they made all those changes to what you're paying for for your membership, like got rid of the you know, magazine and and all that good stuff, like a lot of that was stuff that he was involved in, I guess implementing and rolling out. I'm not sure you know how much influence he had on what to do, but uh so it's funny. So he's down to the PDGA, he moved down to Georgia, and he was the one that called me because he's the one that's coordinating for the team, and it was uh it was pretty funny. But the reason I bring him up is I could probably get him on to chat about it like after the the competition is over, too, Pat. So something something to consider. He's uh he's a nice guy.

I played against JJ Knapp, my good good friend, Tower of Power. I was still captaining when JJ came aboard. Just one of my very favorite people to hang out with and play disc golf. When did we play? I guess it was probably not long after we got back from Long Island. So we agreed to play at SPW because I live really close to Prospect, and he lives really close to Central, so those feel like kind of home courses. We have history at Wallace, so we played SPW Whites. I remember it was early and the ground was pretty soggy, which is not surprising. We had a great match. I feel like I went up, he got a point back, I went up again, he got it back, I went up, and then he didn't get him back. I got a few coming down the stretch, and I think I took it down three and two. So unfortunately, that sent JJ out of the battle royale, sad to say, but it means I do get to play Dennis next. And I saw Dennis tonight at dubs, so we started talking a little about when and where we might want to do that.

So I messaged Jamin, and this is you know, he said that he's going to Maine this week, so he's gonna be out. And I'm like, all right, well, what if I leave work a little bit early? I have to be in Albany Thursday night, anyways, for adult kickball. And I basically, you know, I figured that we could probably meet up before that. So I kind of wanted to not pull any more shisty maneuvers like Ryan Nelson wanted to do by picking courses that were not in the list of courses for that level. Okay, I just figured you know, I try to make it a little bit easier for Jamin, pick something that's north of Albany or so or closer to Albany, and then you know, flaunted Shenantaha or CPS. We decided to go to Central Park, play from the blues. The first six holes, I think, we pushed, and then once we got to I think it was hole seven, which plays from the near the pavilion. I ended up getting five in a row. Then we get to the back part of the course, and we just kind of continued the pushes. And I believe he got one on me on the par five in the back. Oh yeah, I I he definitely did. I went OB. But then I think I won five and four or something like that. So it was somewhere around there. But it was a nice day, and uh, we kind of told we but we kind of both agreed that it was a win-win. Either you win and you move on, or like you said, Pat, you don't gotta worry about it anymore. So I kind of made it a little easier for both of us.

I did. I did. I played uh Justin Park in round three on the winner side, which just happens to be the RPI bracket, apparently, or RPI round, because you've got Justin Muchelli. I don't know how how do you pronounce his name? Muchelli or something.

Yeah. Well, I was looking at it. It's funny because like if Jason ever plays this tournament, which you know may or may not happen, if he beats Nick Warren and Nick Cardone, then round three could have been all RPI grads. Justin M, Justin P, myself, and Jason, which would be interesting. But yeah, I played uh Justin Park, just like Corey said, I've been trying to get people to come down my way so I don't have to drive all the way up to the Capitol District. And so Alden and I had played at J Park, J South, and then uh Corey and I played 27 at Wilcox, and that's what I conned Justin Park into doing was coming down to Wilcox. And I wanted to play the same layout. I wanted to try to play red front, red hatchet, and blue back because I think it's a pretty fair layout. And had I known that Justin Park could throw, you know, a mile both forehand and backhand, probably would have protested playing what we did, which was blues on the regular 19, as well as um the hatchet red, which I think definitely favored him a little bit more than I was anticipating. I mean, he's just got an absolute bomb of a forehand, and uh he was just playing lights out to start on the blues. So I, you know, I was just hoping to be able to get him. As soon as I realized that he had a massive forehand, I I just wanted to try to get him into the hatchet, so I thought I could pick up a couple of uh strokes on him there. Unfortunately, I was like two back going into the hatchet, and within the first like four holes, like he actually had gotten another one on me because he had birdied like four straight and I had only three of them or something like that. So he ended up finishing it up at the back of the hatchet holes. I had a chance on I think eight to hit a putt to come within one, but I got a roll away and he took that one, and so I was three back going into the last hatchet hole, and uh I botched that one too. So he won four with three, and uh I'm now patiently awaiting, I guess, some combination of Travis, John Kirby, or Corey or Alex or no Alex, yeah, Alex or Corey or Travis, I think.

I think Justin put it in as like the J Degenerate uh layout. But it was, I mean, it is obviously a a layout you would not be able to do with like you can never do like a tournament with that layout because there's a lot of crossing fairways. But it was just really fun. Uh we had five people, I think, myself, Justin Park, Justin Michelle, Leighton Scott, and then Megan Mercier, which was cool because there's like some long shots and and all of us can throw you know fairly far, uh, or at least relatively. I mean, Justin Park will will crush us, but uh, you know, Megan throws far, Layton throws far. I'm not even gonna go through what the holes were. Maybe uh when you drop the episode, we'll like share a layout picture or something in the um in the Facebook comments. But it was just fun to play some of the holes a little bit differently. There was like some classic safari layout holes like hole ten to hole eleven, hole eight to hole nine. We played the Lasasso Krakenhole over the pond, but we also did some other fun holes like hole 11 to hole 13 or hole 12 to hole nine, which is uh like I don't know, probably 900 feet par five. So it was just it was really fun. It was a great day. I'm glad he he came up with it. There was also on the flip side, there was also like a 50 foot hole where we played hole 32's T Ped to hole 31's basket. If you could picture that, then you know what I'm talking about. But I did take a three on a 50-foot hole.

Maybe four. I think maybe more three or four, depending on how you space them out. But there's there's definitely some some blind shots or just like crossing fairways. Uh it could get pretty interesting if you had more than three cards, maybe. I won the Safari layout with a 60, uh, with a 63 over Mucelli, who shot a 67. And at least right now the schedule says Jay North.

All right. Well, how was your week? Could have been a lot worse. Um, I've got some family friends out in Buffalo, so I was able to come out a little bit early. I went out Sunday and played a couple of practice rounds, then did some more practice on Monday. So I felt like I was, you know, reasonably prepared for the tournament to start. I was able to meet up with Tyler Gannon to get some practice round at Royalton on that Sunday. Then I went and did the Black Diamond at Emery, played about half that and decided that I was going to not play the last half because uh I was no longer throwing productive disc golf shots. I was just kind of making myself tired. After you know, five hours of driving and an entire previous round, I think that's pretty reasonable. I think that might have been the best decision I had made that uh that weekend, because I just know if I had you know tried to push through that round, uh I would not have been feeling 100% for the first round.

So there were four courses to play, but MA1 only played three of them, and FA1 played three of them as well, but each division had one that only they played. Like I don't think FA1 played Royalton Ravine, and I don't think Ma1 played what's it, Como Sullivan. I do say Como Lake? I should know this. Lighthouse Disc golf course at Como Lake. Como Lake, that's what it was. Yeah. But yeah, so so three different courses, and we're guaranteed to play Royalton twice, and we would potentially play Bond Lake twice, but you'd only ever play Emery once, Black Diamond and Emery.

I'm sorry, Alex, continue. Super great courses, you know, in super uh really good shape. You could tell people spent a lot of time working on them. I really enjoyed them. Uh, you know, there's a lot of times when I can travel to courses and feel like, you know, 75% of these holes are just unbirdiable for for somebody of my caliber. And I think they did a really good job of managing that, where I would say m pretty much every hole bar, maybe 10% over all three courses, were birdieable in some capacity. You might have to have two pretty good shots, but it wasn't the super high-level, like pro-level Maple Hill Golds or something like that, where it's just not a not a thing for amateur level players. Had you ever been to Buffalo before? I have been to Buffalo before. Yeah, like I said, I have I've got some family friends out there, so I've sort of done all the um the touristy things. Went to see the falls the previous time, you know, got plenty of Buffalo wings, that that sort of thing. So I was free to focus on disc all for this trip. So the first round was at Bond Lake, and this was probably the one that I thought was the hardest of the three with the layout that they had done. A couple of early early round jitters took a bogey on the second hole, was able to bounce back with a birdie on the third, and then took a seven on a par five for the fourth hole, and it's you know, it's sort of how it goes. It's a difficult hole, but I made it much more difficult than it had to be. Got a bad kick into some Obi, it happens, but then bounced back with three birdies in a row after that, and you know, it was kind of smooth sailing, you know, got the jitters out, pretty calm for the for the rest of the round until the very end. I knew I was sitting even and I was thinking I might have to push. So a little bit about the format. So there's uh an A pool and a B pool for the MA1 players. A pool was the top half by rating, B pool was the bottom half by rating, I was in B pool, as you might guess. But after the first two rounds, there was supposed to be a reshuffle. So if you're in the top 50% after the first two rounds, you get bumped up to the A pool. So that was my goal for the weekend was you know, if I can get on the good shy a good side of the reshuffle, I'll be feeling pretty good about things. So I went a little bit aggressive. The last hole was another par five, took another OB, ended up with another seven, which is a little bit disappointing

I was just curious what people thought.

Oh, yeah. I didn't go, I don't remember what I was doing when you sent these, but like how loose the string looked, I couldn't tell if that's because there was another stake missing. Like, and I'm assuming you're gonna post these pictures in like the episode Facebook page or whatever, but at least the first one you sent, like Alex, it seems like if the if there was another stake between where your disc is and that guy is standing that would help the string stay taut, it's definitely OB. But I guess if you play between the stakes, like it looks like you guys did, then it's definitely inbounds. Because you're like, you're still definitely what is the purpose of of the OB to like mark out this weedy area.

Luckily that was not this situation, but they did say he can't pull up any of the staples to do anything like that. But if there is no staple, then it's meant to be you know taut.

Yeah. To be fair, Ethan was playing Royalton for round one. So uh he was playing a different course that I thought was a little bit easier. But yeah, Ethan was was in A-pool and he was playing really well. So the Fly Mart, which is, you know, just effectively vendors, local disc golf people, non-local disc golf people. I went to that after my rounds, uh, checked things out, saw Greg Hill. Greg was one in like a little part two, or not part two, but uh a little putting obstacle course thing, like you've seen him do at you know disc east or any number of other things. Jay Gorsage was out there helping him out. He was using his disc golf leagues app to do scoring for that, which was really cool. I did not putt very well at that, but uh as long as I'm putting all right on the course, uh uh that's where I prefer to have it. Round two was at Royalton, which I think was my favorite of the three courses. I thought this course was relatively easy, and I had played well enough to earn myself a pretty late starting time. I think I had a 153 starting time, and as I'm driving there, I get the alert that uh there's been a rain delay, and I'm like, all right, well, we knew it was coming, it was on the forecast, you know, hopefully it's not too long. You said you're staying with family and such, family friends? Uh I was about a half hour to 40 minutes away from all three courses that we played. So pretty centrally located. It was nice. The initial backup pushed us back, uh, I want to say about an hour and a half, two hours. I can't remember what my interim uh tea time was, but it was something like 2.45 or something like that. And as the cart ahead of me is teeing off, we get another lightning delay. So we're backed up another hour. I don't end up teeing off until 4.45, which is really not what you're looking for. I'm just kind of sitting in my car. You know, it's it's raining, but it's not coming down too hard. The rule for lightning is it's a minimum half hour, right, from the last strike? Minimum half hour from the last strike. So if you get another strike at 29 minutes, that's another half hour to back you up. That's how it gets extended into these big long delays. But as we're teeing off, you know, we're we're kind of talking with the TDs and trying to figure out, you know, how's things gonna work? You know, we're starting almost five o'clock and we've got four cards behind us. What happens if people don't finish? And the rumor was they wouldn't do a reshuffle because if you reshuffled, it would make things all sorts of complicated with, you know, some people would have to come back to Royalton for their uh for the end of the round the next morning and then immediately run over to the other course for their next round, you know, like 15 minutes later or something like that. And just to avoid that, they were just gonna not do the reshuffle. You'd do the rest of your round if you didn't finish, and then you'd still be at that same course for for your round three. And now that's the course you like though, right? That is the course I liked, but I was I was gonna end up playing it twice no matter what. Okay. It was just a matter of what order I would play it in. And obviously, I want to be on the good side of the reshuffle, like like I was talking about. That's you know, sort of my goal for the round. But the only thing we can do at this point is, you know, just play as well as we can. I decided I wanted to take 14 pars this round. Luckily, most of them were pretty low stress pars. I was saying pretty much the whole weekend, I was giving myself 12 footers and really racking up uh C1X putting stats, because it's technically not a tap-in, because I'm just outside of the the little white whiskers that mark the bullseye.

So early rounds, round three, and it turns out the rain didn't affect me at all because I shot even, and this was at Royalton again, so uh shot even for the second time in a row. Same deal, you know, made a couple more mistakes, fixed some of the mistakes from the previous day, but definitely left a couple strokes out there. But you know, I'm still averaging right around 950 golf, so I can't complain. That's 30 points over my rating. So not too upset with that.

Yeah, Thursday was the players' party. They gave you a little dinner voucher, ice cream voucher to go get some food from a food truck, and there was some live music. They had some putting and mini course, like putting with minis and throwing minis and and things like that. I didn't stay there too long. I had an early morning again, but it was a cool little uh little thing that they had going on. Round four is at Emory Park, Black Diamond in Emery Park. I enjoyed this course, but I was thinking it was probably right in the middle of the two as far as difficulty-wise. Unfortunately, I was right next to Bobby Hallam and I got split from him because of the way tiebreakers work. He was on the card behind me, I was on the card ahead of him. We were doing the math at the beginning because we were, you know, sitting waiting for our tea times. And in order to hit the cut line to play on Saturday, you had to be top 25%. And at that point, it was like minus two, minus three for the entire tournament. Bobby and I are sitting at plus two for the event, so we've got to shoot like four or five down, and we math that out to be approximately a 10-10 rated round, which it's not likely. Not saying it's impossible.

Like 980 something. Okay. 980 something with a really stupid triple bogey at the very end, which was at Wilcox not too long ago. So it's possible. And this is a course that's you know, it's a pretty bomber course. Honestly, if you think FDR with a little more elevation change, you're you're pretty dang close. Took a birdie on the first hole, took a couple bogies later. I was plus two going into 13, and I hit a birdie. So going into 14, I'm plus one. You know, if I get birdie out from here, that's approximately four down. It's it's not impossible. I've got like a 45-foot putt with OB directly behind it on 14 for birdie. And I'm like, I'm not gonna do anything stupid, I'm just gonna lay it up. And I throw my shot, it hits a root, and stands up and rolls OB anyway. That was the backbreaker. I was I was pretty much done from there. You know, tapped in my bogey to go to plus two, and I'm like, if I really birdie out from here, you know, maybe that there's a couple of eagle opportunities, maybe, but it it just wasn't it wasn't in the cards for me at that point, which is, you know, unfortunate, but honestly, ending up anywhere near the top half of the list. I think in my early goals for the year from the podcast, you know, back in January, I think I just said I didn't want to embarrass myself at worlds. I think the biggest like play goal is not embarrassed myself at uh M Worlds. I think I did a pretty good job of that.

It was a very long course. Like I said, it was pretty dang close to an FDR where you know you've got these par 5s and par fours out there with some OB around. But you know, that's sort of the disc golf that I want to be playing. You know, I want I want to have the the challenge be the distance as opposed to you know super technical, tight wooded stuff. I was gonna say, would you have preferred to play that one twice? In hindsight, maybe. You know, given how I had played, probably not. Um I took a lot of stupid bogeys on that one, and there were really some some opportunities to get in some really bad spots, especially early on. Basically, all of them I feel like I could have played a little bit better, except for Bond. I think I played about how I expected to at Bond, but the other three rounds I feel like I could have done a little bit better. Did you get any practice at Emery? Yeah. I played half a round and then walked the rest of it. So like I was aware of what was coming. I just didn't play all of it.

Yep. So at that point I was like tied for 120th or something like that. It would take a very spectacularly bad round from everyone above me in order to bump me in. So I started off for home, kept an eye on you know some of the other things. Jeremy Casper was was so close to getting there. You know, obviously Ethan Hatters was doing super well, so I was keeping an eye on those. But yeah, no, ended up tied for 117th out of 284, which puts me at like 40, 41 percent of the field. If I was playing pro, I probably would have gotten paid out. So can't complain too much there.

Yeah. You were already on your way home. Yeah, I was on my way home because I had an early tea time, I was able to drive home, you know, no problem on Friday. So Saturday I was home and keeping track of uh everybody online. Well, I say everybody. It turns out of the locals, Ethan was the only one who made the top 25 cut. It turned out that I didn't need the you know four or five down round that I needed. The cut line ended up being at even for the event. So, you know, if I had just been able to shoot two down, maybe something could have happened. You start thinking back to you know, all the places he could have saved, one or two strokes, you know, going back to round one, playing super aggressive when I didn't need to. But um, you know, that's golf. You can't you can't be thinking about things too much. There's always gonna be opportunities where I could have done just a little bit better. Absolutely. So you said even par was the cut? Yeah, even par for the event was the cut line.

Ethan literally he put the pedal to the metal. He was going into the finals with a two-stroke lead over Gavin Bednar, and I believe they finished at Bond Lake, which they played round two, and Ethan shot a seven down, and Gavin shot a 12 down. So they hadn't played Bond Lake since that round, and they're going through it for the final, and Ethan is up against the guy that popped off at the course previously.

The thing that impressed me looking at it, as the final round was happening, I was looking back and he didn't have the hot round in any of the first four rounds, but he did so consistently well that he was winning by two strokes going into the final and then just absolutely slayed. It was great.

He went bogey free and basically for the most part matched Gavin's birdies with birdies of his own and picked up a couple extra. Hole ten, Ethan takes a birdie on a par four, Gavin takes a six, three-stroke swing. Next hole, hole eleven, three hundred and fifteen feet, Ethan aces during the final round of the amateur world championships, and Gavin takes a par, so another two-stroke swing. At this point, he's already up by like, I don't even know. Yeah, he's up by like six strokes at this point. So I I mean, I'm sure nerves are flying, but you know, I'm sure everyone that's looking at their phone or the computer screen is just like he just has to hold on. But he did more than just hold on, he buried him even more by picking up four more birdies in the last five holes. Even as they're coming into hole 16, it's like he's really about to do it. He's about to he just won junior worlds and he's about to crank out the entire amateur world championship as well. Seven stroke lead over a second place to win is crazy. And he he threw a 1062 rated round, which I think is his highest round so far, averaged 1031. I I think a lot of their guys he played against are thousand rated or or or pretty close to it.

That was an interesting night. We had the kids with us, and Ben Ayers and Meg Jame showed up after the round had started, so they joined our card. So we had a six em with the children. Because you could just see like a wall of dark clouds like rapidly coming toward us. And in the time it took to tee off on seven, it went from just a little windy to like an uncomfortable hard rain. Like it was pelting you. My kids were, you know, soaked to the bone instantly. I couldn't even try to wrangle them up. Me and my partner, Jordan Castlin. We we just held on and didn't really bogey during the it was like a four hole stretch of just horrible rain. And then it basically stopped. So yeah, just not bogeying during that bad stretch and keeping it together. Um, we were able to win by a lot. I think it was like four strokes at the end of that. And I that basically I think comes down to to playing the rain holes pretty well.

Sean Collins aced, I would think the hardest ace on the course, besides the part fours. He aced a hole that is downhill, turning right, can't even see it, and there's an Obi River halfway there. So like I bogeied that hole with like an okay shot. Yeah. Hole 15. Hole 15.

Sean Collins took down the first ace of the inaugural Sassafras Solos League, a dream ace on 15, a 350 feet downhill dog leg blind shot. Not only did he ace and take $248 of $298 ace pot, he took first in our largest win of the year. He also donated $50 to the ace pot to keep other players wanting to come. Second place today was Mill Smith, who had a great round, and JQ took third. We had five people get their handicapped today and look forward to some of them taking our money with a handicap round coming for them next. It was a gorgeous day today, and every week inches closer to the Montgomery County Championship, so we did some work after and essentially finished Hole 4's new basket, giving the front nine its first par four. Lastly, and I didn't get a picture, but the Boy Scouts were back working on the bridge, fixing the erosion bags that helped save the creek from that huge deluge we got, and fixing up the older part of the bridge.
