Are There Human Subspecies?~ with LAURA VAN HOLSTEIN
Show Notes Chapter Markers

LAURA VAN HOLSTEIN is a PhD Candidate at the University of Cambridge who has recently published her revolutionary research on the role of subspecies in evolution, authenticating one of Charles Darwin's theories.

Laura studied for her BA from 2013 to 2016 in Biological Anthropology. Her main fields of research include human evolution and phylogenetic comparative methods.

MARK from Evolution Soup talks with Laura about her ground-breaking work, what is meant by a 'subspecies' and how these phenotypically distinct groups can lead to new species.

We even chat about Tiger King!

You’ve proved one of Darwin’s evolutionary theories….
Can you just tell us a little bit about your background?
What exactly is meant by a ‘subspecies’?
Talk about your dissertation on archaic humans.
Tell us why the relationship between animal species and their subspecies is the key to understanding how evolution works.
A large genus of animals is more likely to give rise to lots of varieties, correct?
And when we say ‘subspecies’ were definitely not talking about ‘race’ or ‘ethnicity’ – because that’s a totally different thing, correct?
Your work can be used by conservationists and environmentalists to predict how a species may or may not go extinct…
