You're listening to the Get Out N Drive Podcast fueled by AMD with your host John customcarnerd Meyer and Jason oldcarrguy Carr, we'll be bringing you gear, heads, everything you never wanted to know about cars and why they should be on the road and not in your. Garage. Are you ready to Get Out N Drive?
John
As always, this weekend we are at 2024 MCACN. We are hanging out with Riley of Riley's rebuilds.
Riley
Hey.
John
Tell me about this wonderful car, because I know it has been in your family for quite some time.
Riley
Yeah, let's. We can start with that. So it's been in the family for 20 years. So my dad bought it, I think in Alabama. I always get those states wrong somewhere in the South. Didn't know what he was buying, thought it was just a regular Nomad with good sides.
John
OK.
Riley
He bought it, brought it home. Mom was really mad.
John
Ah.
Riley
Stayed in the family for a very long time. I was born. This is the car that was in our garage that I was raised up on because she was a stay at home dad. And my crib was in the garage with him. I have photos of me block sanding the car at like 5 years old. Yeah, this was the car that I grew up on and then it was kind of put on the back burner as we had different projects coming in. And as Riley's rebuilds blew up on social media.
John
OK, wow. Nate. Oh.
Riley
We started focusing on my car, the girls car, some other cars. And then about six months ago, I was talking to SEMO and Armo. And they were saying they needed a car. And I said I have a car. It's really cool and has a great back story and I.
John
I have a. Car.
Riley
Put the car in our mouth and didn't tell Dad at all until it was done.
John
Wow.
Riley
And I gave and it was shell when I. Dedicated it to SEMA. Yeah, and.
John
I see. Wow. So there was a lot of financial and financial responsibility and parts responsibility to assemble the car, right?
Riley
Yeah, there definitely was. And what's nice is with Riley's rebuilds and and social media, we're able to get sponsors for the car like Coker tires, sponsored us. And we have a bunch of other sponsors.
John
MHM.
Riley
Like classic industry. And so a lot of it was really good. And then with the business, a lot of it was a write off. So it it worked out very well with. The amount of time.
John
Wow. And and from when you said we're going to do it. Until you were finished.
Riley
Three months. Four months.
John
That's not bad.
Riley
No, we worked on it every single day. So when I was home for summer, when we talked to armo about it, they said you can't. Tell anybody about it. You can't show really anything about it.
John
Right.
Riley
And I was.
John
Because they wanted the reveal, they wanted everything right.
Riley
The review. Yeah. And I was going away to College in Connecticut. And so we had to do as much work as we could in the amount of one month.
Speaker 2
OK.
Riley
Not showing the car as much as we could. Not knowing what. We could or couldn't do so. We didn't really have a regulations. And so all the.
John
Right.
Riley
Videos that you guys see on. Social media of me working on this car was done in summer time and buffeted.
John
Right. Yeah. And you don't you make sure. You don't put them out. Yeah.
Riley
And then the little ones and my dad for the the rest of the three months worked on it completely and I'm giving Dane as much credit as due because he's put so much hard work and energy into his car. He's done so much research.
John
Yeah.
Riley
Into this.
John
When was the car painted?
Riley
A long time ago, actually, yes.
John
OK, because that was my question because I've been a body man for 35 plus years and. It had been painted and just not reassembled, and things like that.
Riley
Exactly. Yeah. So.
John
OK, because I've. Done a lot of TriFive cars. I've done a lot of interior and TriFive cars. We even talked briefly on social media about how hard the back rear quarter panel skins are to put on to get them lines to go. Nice. Yeah, I've done a lot of them. I've I've done.
Riley
Yes. Oh my gosh, yes.
John
A lot of them.
Riley
Yeah, yeah. The body was painted. I think when I was. Is 10 to 13. There was some. There was some paint problem with the guy and we couldn't get the car back. And then it wasn't getting painted. And it was, yeah. Paint jail for three years, I think. Yeah. But yeah, it's been painted. When it was committed to SEMA, Interior was out.
John
Wow. Oh no paint Jail. Ohh.
Riley
There was nothing in the Bay.
John
Mm-hmm.
Riley
Nothing was going on. Stainless wasn't. Stain stainless thing like it was not polished and there was nothing there but.
John
There was no there was. Nothing. Right, right. Wow. So for people that may not know the history of this car in a nutshell. This is a very special car. When did the family realize that it was that special of a car and what it was? Let's tell us about that.
Riley
So the car is the second fuel injection unit made. It is was made in 56. The prototype for the 57 Chevy Nomad. So there is a bunch of.
John
Please for meeting it.
Riley
Little hi. It was nice meeting you. So there is a bunch of. Random little things in this car that wasn't making any sense and that's why Dad officially started to like look into it. So what had happened?
John
Because of the reason it was.
Riley
Prototyped because it was prototype and because there's like Chrome on the fuel injection system and who's chroming that? Or like, there's no ashtrays in here. And like in a normal 57, there's ashtrays and there's some like weird fuel sys and stuff, fuel piping and tubing.
John
OK. Right, right.
Riley
Going on in the Bay.
John
And where the air intake was in a different spot is cut out and the course forward and all that like.
Riley
Yes, yes, yes, yeah. And so.
Jason

Riley
And So what had happened was when Dane was taking out the seats he found in the springs, pictures, of the car. And he took the.
John
Pictures like it went in there, or somebody put them in there, Easter egg.
Riley
It on. Put them there. . Yeah. And he took those photos and put it as his profile photo on Facebook. And he was just messaging around. He'd always been in these Facebook groups. And someone messaged him one day and said your car is in my book. Yeah. Which he was like, what? And the guy sent him the book, and he found the name. Nathaniel Waters. On the book. I think that's his name. I might be getting it wrong and.
John
OK, sure, sure, sure.
Riley
He messaged and emailed every single person with that name possible.
John
While to trace the history of the vehicle.
Riley
Yeah, and trace. History of the vehicle.
John
Because prior to that the, the the history of the vehicle was lost. There was.
Riley
Not at all. He just bought it a little farm. Tripped over it, OK, and a month later he gets a call from the guys daughter and she said unfortunately my father passed away six months ago, but that's my dad's car.
John
MHM. Ah. Oh. Wow.
Riley
And she told him all these stories and and still to this point, she didn't really know the history, but she would say like things like. Ohh yeah. My dad would go to the dealership for a year because he couldn't get his car.
Riley
And my dad was like, what do you mean he couldn't get his car? He had bought his car.
John
That doesn't make sense.
Riley
And also, when my dad was putting out some of the serial numbers, all the enthusiasts were like, that's not real.
John
Hmm. Does this have a VIN tag?
Riley
Yes it does.
John
OK, because I know it's so early it has like. A correct VIN tag for 57.
Riley
So that's what's crazy is so.
John
OK, that's I know that was something else. I want to talk to you about.
Riley
So what it is is.. The numbers were lining up to being the first production day possible for this car. And it was 56 of October, and you couldn't get a fuel injection system till mid 57, right? So everybody was like that's not that's wrong. That's fake. Yes, all the enthusiasts. And and we didn't also have the Chrome unit at this point. We had what's in the back.
John
That's wrong, everybody that that makes the rules says that's wrong, right? Right. OK.
Riley
The unit that originally came with the car.
John
Right, right.
Riley
Because the story behind that is when it was still at the dealership, whenever the these cars were brought in. To be fixed and worked on in the Bay, they said. Oh, just take that heat and out and put that one in because these are too faulty. They're they're prototypes.
John
Right, right there. And and the mechanical fuel injection in itself is a pain to tune and get running. And and all that stuff to begin with.
Riley
And not many people knew about it. Sure, because it's the second unit. It was taken from a Corvette, OK and put in here cause Corvette wanted to do was make a family car that could go. 300 horsepower, right? Right, right. And so they said, yeah, just take it off, put it on that new system and. You'll be good to. Go and so a lot of things, we're just not adding up.
John
Wow.
Riley
And so Dan went to the GM archives. And he started. Doing some crazy research into this and I'm sure if you talk to him he can go. So geek out on you about it. But he found work orders for four cars.
John
No sure Sir.
Riley
2 black widows.
John
OK.
Riley
The Nomad and the Corvette.
John
Yep.
Riley
All with the same system, all to go into the New York Auto Show.
John
OK.
Riley
And his car was in the book of the New York Auto Show. Wow. So that's some of the photos that was. That's on the board, is next to the Corvette is our car.
John
MHM. I spent a long time on the website, by the way. Yes, the website for this like just as a mechanical goof, I just geeked out on the website. I'm like, looking at these. Numbers looking at this picture and that, and that's all in my wheelhouse. That's everything that's unbelievable about this Car .
Riley
Yes moments and put all of this stuff together and really did some major research and and got it proved that this was the car with the VIN number.
John
Yeah. Mm-hmm. Wow.
Riley
And like all of the numbers that needed to be, and like the prototype stuff and everything sort of piercing together and about, I think 3 years ago we got a call from a buddy. Who says "Dane? You need to Check this out on Facebook marketplace." Our Chrome system was being sold on a state sale because one of the GM executives had. It home and put it on his like. And he had passed away.
John
But it but it's below the one that belongs to this vehicle. Is that the dunce off signed or numbered or whatever?
Riley
So there's 1001, 1002, that's 1002. The Corvette has 1001, OK and there was only four main and the other two are with their other cards.
John
OK. OK. Yeah. Yes. Right. OK, wow.
Riley
And the Corvette has it. It's Chrome.
John
And it made it back up to it, yeah.
Riley
And it's so we went. Even if even. If they got, like thrown around, it doesn't matter.
John
Sure.
Riley
Because they're the. Same things. It goes to all four cars. These four cars are together.
John
Right, right. But again, you just had someone say you have this car and they tripped over that and and and the planets aligned. You you couldn't even ask to create That.
Riley
, and no one knew. Any like what? Anything. Anybody had? No one knew that. What that system was, because that system is 50K. So people go.
John
Wow. Right.
Riley
Ohh it was like 15. That that's a that's a yeah.
John
Right. That's a lot, right? Yeah. It's it's absolutely unbelievable the amount of. Things that had to happen.
Riley
To line up for this, yeah.
John
To line up to make this happen and it's it's absolutely amazing.
Speaker 2
Enjoy your channel. I'll watch it all the time. It's it's so cool. Especially with your car show you walk up to the guys and say.
Riley
Ohh thank you so much. Thank you so much. Let me come out in a second. We're doing a interview. Right now, OK.
Speaker 2
Yeah.
John
But yeah, that's that's just. Just amazing of of of everything that had to happen. Yeah.
Riley
It's the universe wanted it to happen.
John
It is. It is fabulous and I'm glad you were able to be a part of this and grow up with the car and that has a lot to do with what we push, #whatdrivesyouth, YOUTH.
Riley
Yeah. Yes.
John
H. Yeah. And we want to figure out. How to get the next generation of of enthusiasts in this industry, and this is very helpful.
Riley
You know. What? Yeah. And you know what's really cool is I just got back from a panel. They had a panel over there of, like 16 kids of like, 16 and under that have cars here. Which is really cool. That's really awesome. So people are I definitely am seeing you grabbing, I actually heard. These numbers at 60% of classic cars are owned by 45 and younger.
John
I like those numbers. Those are good numbers.
Riley
Those are really good numbers.
John
As the good numbers and and I see that I have to adapt and adjust my numbers to get newer because I still think that cars from the 80s are just generic used cars and they are in here in malaise era classic Cars.
Riley
Yes. Yeah.
John
. Yes, so absolutely amazing. Thank you very much. Chatting with us for a little. Here's your reminder to support the companies that support your right to Get Out N Drive.
