I do have some follow ups from our last episode, Pie Mary. so we had wondered if or how Chris Gethard, aka the guy from the male activist group, got on

Parks and rack. and c because a lot of times, especially in these later seasons, like they already knew people, especially if they had been in the comedy world with like UCB or whatever other improv team, whatever, a lot of times either the casting will reach out to them, to the actor, or the actor will reach out to whoever they know on the show. But online it says that he just regularly auditioned. they knew him, like I said. Mike Stern, the casting director, knew him from UCB slash the comedy world, but it was a regular audition process. He had also been in the office.

prior to this. So I just can't imagine him auditioning for that role because you know he was just so good at it. but yeah he just auditioned.

I know. I know. Super cool. But anyway, I'm glad they got him. And then we had also wondered why Aziz Ansari, aka Tom, was missing from these last three episodes, including this one that we're about to do. And there's nothing specific online. Like we had speculated maybe it was because Master of None, his show with Alan Yang was coming out. And I looked it up and Master of None did come out in twenty fifteen when this was shooting slash aired. So it could have been but I'm not really sure.

actually that's a lie. So it's shot in twenty fourteen, Parks and Rick this last episode, and then aired in twenty fifteen. But you know, with T V schedules and filming schedules, you never know. So that's kind of my only guess on why Aziz was missing for three episodes total. So I'll have to talk to him.

I thought that he had said that before. And it is true that and we were right that it's also in the Andy also suggests that in the scene where April loses the files in the win, loser, draw episode. And Andy says, If you get fired, I'll quit too. We'll burn off our fingertips with acid, swap faces, and start a new life. Like, no worries. This is the solution. So that's his whole thing.

Yes, exactly. And I mean, luckily the one last week was in the producer's cut and it was a deleted scene. So like it wasn't something that people would pick up on unless you saw the producer's cut. But still, what I think that's funny they gave him that line regardless. It's like, yep, when we have to run away and we're feeling pressure, we're just gonna burn our fingertips off. So they can't get the fingerprints. my god. Okay.

So we are now moving on to season seven, episode 10, The Johnny Karate, Super Awesome Musical Explosion Show, written by Matt Hubbard, which was such a huge part of all of our favorite shows. Matt has written slash produced quite a few things. He wrote on 30 Rock. He also created Loot on Apple TV with Maya Rudolph. he created that with Alan Yang, aka Chang from Mouserat, but also a writer on Parks and Rec, of course.

Matt Hubbard also wrote on Superstore. I also found out, and I can't believe I haven't mentioned it before, at least I don't think I have anyway, that he wrote on the show Joey, The Friends Spinoff.

I know no, I never did. I feel awful about it, but no, I never watched it. Maybe I should add it to my list. because to at least see. But I have to say it's it's I have looked up the whole idea of it and like Joey moves to LA because he wants to give acting a shot in LA. And to me, the whole premise sounds not right. Like he's New York through and through. But I d so I guess they just needed to switch it up. But I'll watch it like when I have time and don't have nine hundred other things on my watch list.

Me too. Yeah, me too. Yeah, agreed. Anyhow, okay, so he's also he's written two episodes. Matt Hubbard, who wrote this episode, has written two episodes total of Parks and Wreck. The first one was Fluoride, which is such a great episode. So love that. He's coming back for this one. And then this is his second episode and his final writing credit on parks. Very sad, but also great.

Okay, this was directed by Dean Holland, who we love. And if you're new here, we are obsessed with Dean because he is a huge backbone to the editing process of the mockumentary style. He edited and kind of stylized the office and then lended his editing and direction style everything to parks as well. I know Greg Daniels and Mike Sure were like the creators of the mockumentary kind of situation, in American television, but I feel like this

Editing style of as far as like the quick cuts and like how comedic it is when like you think that it should go on for longer, but they cut right at the right moment to make you like bust out laughing. That's I feel so much due in part to Dean Holland. and he actually directed, I went through he directed 27 episodes of Parks. I don't think I realize how much he directed. That's so crazy. Yeah.

Proving again like what a huge part of Parks he was. obviously, of course, since he had worked with everyone on the office before, he also worked in The Good Place. He'll be working on the new or is working on the new Amy Polar Mike Scher show called Dig. He's incredible. And this will be his last episode of Parks as a director anyway. So my gosh. Such a series wrap on both of these amazing writer, director, Matt Hubbard and Dean Holland. And by the way, Dean Holland, if you're

And it would be nice to not have to like review an episode every week 'cause it's it is a lot of work to do that. and I do a lot of work when I like research interviews and people and stuff, but that would be like I don't know, just a different vibe, different energy.

I will say I feel like this was kinda I know I I don't know if they did this on purpose. I'm sure that they needed a tiny break too, but there it was still a lot of writing involved. To me, it felt like a spin on a clip show, which are you familiar with the term clip show?

Yeah, essentially where they sh yeah, exactly. Where they show clips. That's why it's called a clip show, it's annoying. But like it happens in the later seasons sometimes where like they need a break from writing. They don't really have a ton of other things that they have to wrap up or whatever. and so they show old clips. the one that comes to mind is when Joey is auditioning for mac and cheese and he's like, I'm not a good actor, I'll never get this and Rachel's like, How can you say that? You're a terrific actor and then they go back over his all of the clips of like

him acting and all the other things he's been acting in and so that takes up like fifteen minutes. but it's a really cool way to go through the memories of each character. I don't mind clip shows, especially if they don't do it often, which most shows don't because you know, there's not really a need to. but I like that they did a bit of a spin on it where like it's a fresh episode, it's a new episode, but we're still getting so many memories and like

And there were a lot of people and sometimes I struggle with whether to bring this up or not, because I do sometimes, but the reviews on this on IMDb and some like Reddit threads and stuff on this episode in particular when it first came out were not great. Like people thought it was boring. People thought it was like, why are we touching on this? And I'm like,

Y'all need to sit down, 'cause there's no reason to not like this episode, you know?

He was like waiting for the horse to talk.

And I was like, my God, that's the kind of Perd stuff that we know and love, you know.

But anyhow, she brought the scariest animal in the whole world, a Goliath bird-eating tarantula. And of course, it's missing. Andy took it out to play hide and seek, and now they can't find it. And I love that we get to see that now it's going to turn into another segment of like animal loose in the studio. Or loose animal in the studio or whatever. And like the cause this is exactly like this has clearly happened before. Just be aware.

And it also it reminded me so much, and I know that

You're not one that can like quote the office. But I know that you've seen it. And I feel and not that I'm gonna quote or anything, but I do feel like this is probably when I was watching it anyway. This is one of the scenes slash shots that reminds me so much of what the office used to do. Because parks doesn't do this as much.
