Cold Open: The Generator Opportunity
SPEAKER_03Guys, if you're not involved in portable generators, you're missing out on a huge niche market. If nothing else, don't take my word for it. Just explore it for yourself. Either look at some of the wins that have been there, look at some of the options you can make, and I guarantee you're gonna find something worth the investment.
SPEAKER_01Hello, hello, hello, and welcome to the Million Dollar Electrician Podcast, where we help home service pros like you supercharge your business and spark up those sales.
SPEAKER_02I'm Joseph Lucanny, and together with my co-host Clay New Meyer, we're here to share the secrets that have helped electricians sell over a million dollars from a single service band.
SPEAKER_00Now it's time for sales. It's time for scale. It's time to become a million-dollar electrician.
SPEAKER_01Hello, hello, hello, and welcome back to another great episode of The Million Dollar Electrician powered by Duramax. Today's a super cool episode. We've got a second interview with our sponsor and the senior account manager over at Duramax. And he's got some cool stories because recently they saw some major surges from the ice storms that have been happening. Jesse, welcome back to the show. How are you doing today, brother?
SPEAKER_04Doing great, man. Thanks for uh thanks for inviting me back. Um I'm glad we uh we can carve some time out to uh get in front of the people again and share some wins and and keep this train on the tracks.
SPEAKER_01Me too. And it goes without introduction, Joe. I know you're excited for this one. Someone said generators. I mean, Joe wasn't even invited here, he just overheard it and snuck in the back door as soon as that word came out.
SPEAKER_03That's a game plan. I had my ear against the door being like, I wonder what the cool kids are doing. Oh, generators, I'm in.
SPEAKER_01Forget what the cool kids are doing. I'm doing generator stuff.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Oh my gosh. So these ice storms, um, we've heard a bit about them. I didn't have it didn't happen where I am in Vancouver, Canada, but Joe, were they around you?
SPEAKER_03Oh my gosh, yeah. No, there are the entire East Coast, uh, millions had lost power at one point. We our us ourselves, we had like over 18 inches of snow, uh, and then everything froze over. So it was it was pretty intense.
Ice Storms Spike Demand Nationwide
SPEAKER_01Well, awesome to have you, Jesse. I know you already told me some of the exciting stuff and some of the the uh the drives that you saw for people to get portable generators. Um, there must have been a huge demand in homeowners from what you told me. I mean, I've never heard of such a uh big drive for these things. Tell us more, man.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, well, I mean, long story short, last year we we were on here and we kind of, as I like to call it, planted some seeds, kind of got the message out, and uh a lot of customers uh you know kind of had the seed plant in the customers' minds uh that there's an affordable solution out there. And the first of the year came around and uh everything just lit up uh like like you wouldn't believe. I had customers reaching out begging for pallets and pallets of generators, but more importantly, they're just being able to offer their customer an affordable, realistic solution to uh you know, home power backup. And that's what was nice to be able to fill that gap. Um and I had people that I kind of shared with you were driving from states over South Carolina, North Carolina all the way to our Tennessee warehouse. It was unprecedented. I mean, uh it was pretty wild to say the least.
SPEAKER_01Just for a couple of units?
Electricians Buying Pallets And Truckloads
SPEAKER_04Uh not a not a chance of. We had um I had several full truckloads show up there. I mean, I'll I one one story I'll kind of share with you that was kind of a fun one. A gentleman had uh wired in money for 24 generators, hit the road, drove all the way to Tennessee from South Carolina or North Carolina. I'll be honest, I'm not sure off the top of my head, but he showed up at Tennessee the next morning and had sold another 36 more generators while he was on the road, wired the money in. I had to wake the owner up because we're in California. No, he the people in Tennessee didn't even know that they uh there was an order waiting for him. It was uh it was one of those kind of weeks to say the least. So this guy ended up taking over 50 generators and was a hometown hero. And uh he was one of many. I mean, he was one of the bigger ones, I won't argue, but I had several guys getting multiple, multiple pallets, uh, full truckloads. Uh, and it was it was great to be able to offer these guys, you know, something that could help them out, and we've got a great product to boot.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's wild. It was this like a generator shop, or is this an electrician acquiring generators for his customers?
Why Portables Win: Affordable Backup
SPEAKER_04I'll be honest with you, these are all the only thing the only customers I'm just I'm discussing today are going to be electricians, and and the majority of these guys are under your umbrella, to be to be frank with you. I mean, that's why I was kind of excited to get back in front of you guys because the guys that I I do get from your your channel are all about growth, and they could see the writing on the wall, and they're they're not shy and uh very reputable. So it's a great relationship. I mean, for the guys I've been doing business with for a while and the new guys I've got brought on, I uh I know I'll be getting a lot of Christmas cards this year for sure. Yeah, that's amazing.
SPEAKER_01Joe, I just saw the big fist pump over there. Why why are you so excited, brother?
SPEAKER_03So uh I'm super biased towards electricians, you know, coming from the multi-trades and like you know, having to work with HVAC and plumbing, like I wanted to strictly be with electricians and hearing that my people finally got the message and they're like they're on the train of generators, we're all on the same boat, we're rowing it to the right direction. It makes me so happy knowing not only that they came from our group, but also that electricians are as a whole are really starting to get the message and let it sink in.
Noise Myths And Real-World Use
SPEAKER_04Yeah, no, it's definitely uh it's a game changer for for really everybody involved because kind of like we we discussed you know briefly before, it's so many people, or I should say almost everybody wants a solution when there's no power, when there's a storm, and the grid's so unstable, there's a million different reasons why this is on the back of everyone's mind. But at the end of the day, most people don't have 10, 12, 15, or 20 grand, you know, put aside for something like that. And this you know comes in clutch and fills in all the blanks.
SPEAKER_03The cool thing on top of that is, and actually, this may even help you when you actually talk about your generators. You'll occasionally hear someone say something along the lines of, oh, well, they're too noisy. My neighbor's not gonna like it. It's like actually the neighbor will. He's gonna come by and stay with you when he has no power.
SPEAKER_04That is true. Like we we get that a lot. So you have the only thing you're gonna be hearing is your neighbor's generator if you don't have one going, and what are you gonna complain? That his he's got a generator running and he's powering up his house. The last concern you have when you're you're trying to you know stay warm or keep the lights on or anything in between. I completely agree.
Jesse’s Setup And California Context
SPEAKER_01Jesse, when I imagine your house, I imagine that you don't have grid power and that you just have a warehouse worth of generators in the background and you just pick a different model every night and you're like, ah, 13. Well, I don't know. What are we gonna run today? Is that true or or am I just making this up in my head?
SPEAKER_04I mean, I'll I'll be honest with you, I I have I have some protection. I have a transfer switch at the side of the house, an inlet box ready to go. But I our our grid, knock on wood, is pretty darn stable, so I haven't really had to worry about, haven't had to be on the other side of the fence uh not very often. And if we have, it's only for a brief time. We're we're in a pretty safe area of Southern California over here at the headquarters where it's I mean knock on wood semi-safe. I mean, we're not where the fires are at, so that was that was the only part of California that was pretty pretty rough at one point, but we're safe thus far. But meanwhile, I still have a transfer switch anyway. I mean, I have to, you know? Can't be that guy.
SPEAKER_01That reminds me. Last time you were on, we did our generator workshop right after, and you guys issued a free generator uh as a gift on that one, and it ended up not having to ship too far then because I think that one went to Cali.
CARB, EFI, And Product Upgrades
SPEAKER_04That's true. That is true. That one did to go to California, and then we you know we kind of had to ended up upgrading that gentleman because in California we've got some serious emissions, uh, aka Carb, the California Air Resource Board. So lo and behold, uh he was in California, so I talked him into letting us upgrade him to the EFI machine, which was uh not a 13,000 but a 15,000 with the EFI and it kind of had all the all the bells and whistles. It was still warm from the factory. It was a it was a brand new machine, and he was probably one of the first guys to get a chance to kick the tires on that. So I'm sure that was definitely a nice thing to be able to reward him with.
SPEAKER_03Oh, just so you know, we were gonna give you a 13, but is it okay if we actually give you a better 15? Like, would you be you wouldn't mind that?
SPEAKER_04It's like, uh find it in your heart to forgive me for this. Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, I had to walk the plank on that one for sure.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I was gonna say you're you're focused on the wrong conversation. Jesse's a senior account manager, but I'm sure he had to go to someone and explain how we're we're sending a better generator than anticipated. Whoops.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I was like, well, uh honestly, I was like, hey, even if you guys would let me send him a 13, I didn't want to because I wouldn't be able to sell him one of those later. I wanted to be able to at least put something in front of him that I could talk to him about down the road. So that was my, you know, that was pretty much how I got that to how I got them to give me the uh give me the green light on that.
Service Mindset And Going The Extra Mile
SPEAKER_01Can I pay you guys a compliment? Go ahead. The reason we at Million Dollar Electrician and Service Super Electrical wanted to work with Duramax was because of the feedback that we were already receiving from the marketplace. And that feedback has been true to you, Jesse, as as a really good customer service representative, someone who truly puts the best foot forward and really thinks about the person you're talking to. So I wanted to give you that compliment. But also, it seems to be that you have a full support of the people you work with at Duramax to make these things happen. I mean, let's be honest, that's why we're here, because you guys did that. You made steps, you made concessions, you made this more available, you've come on and and been a representative, but also still every piece of feedback I get from anyone that talks to you personally has been Jesse's awesome, he's the guy, here's his number, don't call anyone else. Why? Why do you care so much about this? Like what drives you to serve at that level?
Warehouses, Logistics, And Texas Expansion
SPEAKER_04I I mean, to shorten it up for you, I'm I'm I'm just probably in too deep at this point. And uh I'm I just I mean I I I I I couldn't tell how else to say it. I don't know any other way to do it. And I just look at things like uh, I mean, I've been here for a long time. I know we shared before, I've been here for a little over 30 years now. It was it was just been 30 years last year, and this will be my 31st year. So I've been through a lot of storms and a lot of different, you know, different climates when it went when when it comes to when not just you know the seasonal climates, but even inventory climates and fluctuations as far as like not being able to support somebody during a storm. And the difference this time was we actually had inventory ready to go, which was really a huge advantage. And I could see that, hey, this is not, you know, this is this is something we've been waiting for. Like it, like I mentioned earlier, we're planting seeds all last year. It's time to time to buckle up and uh get after it because it'll be, you know, it it'll it'll come and go here before long, and uh we'll be we'll be licking our wounds and missing these days. And and right now is kind of uh an in-between, which is a great time, like I said, to get back in front of you guys and kind of remind people, hey, if you didn't jump on board, it's not too late. This year just started. Um there's still a ton of potential, and there's still a you know, this is the grid's not getting any any more stable. It's getting only only worse in that respect, and it'd be a great time to you know share some wins and let your guys understand the advantages that we have. And uh it's really nice to hear that you guys uh some of the guys got back and share that I do a good job because I I really do take a lot of pride and that's hearing that kind of stuff is really what keeps me going. It's just like I like to be the guy that goes the extra mile. I mean, to be honest with you.
SPEAKER_03I feel like you're definitely fit to be a generator guy because the fact that you're prepping and you're like, you know what, these things are gonna happen, they're gonna be specific times, we got to be ready for it. I feel like a generator specialist is always on the edge of his seat looking at the weather channels as fingers crossed, like, all right, is this storm coming? Is it gonna hit? And you were ready for it. You had the inventory, you planned for it, like well done, man. Really well done on your end.
SPEAKER_04And as far as that infrastructure, I know we shared before, I mean, I'm at the headquarters in California. We've got another massive warehouse in Tennessee. Um, but just to share this with you, that I'm sure a lot of your customers will appreciate, is we're only a few months away from building our third warehouse right outside of Houston in Texas. So in a few months, we'll be able to get generators to to all your customers within just a few days. And right now it's still less than a week for most customers if the you know if the roads aren't you know froze over. But give us a few months and we'll have stuff to in guys' laps in just a couple of days, which is going to be a huge advantage when it comes to just trying to take over and be convenient for everybody.
SPEAKER_01Slight observation here, but it seems like everyone with the headquarters in Cali soon has a headquarters or wants a headquarters rather in Texas.
SPEAKER_04That's the rumor.

Come on, guys, let's brighten this thing up. Is it gonna be you? Back to the show. Jesse, what's what makes this storm different? And and like what's the difference between Jesse and Duramax last year and what you guys are doing today? I'm sure there's been some updates and some other news on your guys' side.
SPEAKER_04We've definitely revamped a lot of our products. I mean, we're constantly trying to make our products um, you know, better for the customer, user-friendly. Remote controls are almost standard on most of our machines now. Even without that, they've got push button starts. Um, and the reason they do that is in the years before, I'm sure Joe remembers this, they were key starts. If a storm comes in, nobody remembers where they left their keys at. So you gotta you gotta grab your rosary if you walk downstairs when there's a storm going a few years ago when customers are calling, going, I need keys, I need keys, there's a storm coming. We used to send out thousands of keys. And to kind of speak on your point, we would do that. We would send out thousands of keys to customers storm after storm because we knew that's all that separated them from you know being able to be a hero uh and being able to, you know, make their make bring their uh some comfort to the house. So it made a big difference. And now we go into the push button start so they don't have to worry about remembering the keys. They still have backup recoils, so if the battery's dead, they can still go out there, pull the cord. Um, and they're you know, they recharge themselves, they got alternators built into them, they got solid tires now, so if it's been left in the shed for a couple of years, you don't have to scratch your head, go, man, I gotta get an air compressor back there in the dark, just to figure out if I if the battery's dead or you know where it's at. It's they kind of thought of everything. The windings have been conditioned to be where they're on a lot of our new machines now are 5% THD, which is a great, great advantage that we can share with uh a lot of our customers out there. They're plugging in some sensitive electronics. It's kind of a nice advantage to be able to share. Not all our machines are there yet, but they're they will be soon enough. We're we're basically evolving them to that. And that's one thing we are doing, is just constantly evolving.
SPEAKER_03That's amazing. You're able to get the frequency to dialed in to that extent. Like that's such clean level power.
Tri‑Fuel Flexibility And Clean Power
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it's kind of it's almost it's it's it's almost as good as our inverters, you know. And our inverters are super clean. Those are they say they're they're less than 5%, but they they usually say they're they're less than 3% on the inverter.
SPEAKER_03I remember they're really back in the day when we were doing different brands and different generators, like way back. I remember that was the biggest thing where you couldn't get systems that had clean power. It was like, well, you got a portable, it's dirty power, we're not gonna be able to back it up. Don't put don't connect your computer to it. But now it's like you could leave put anything you want with that level of clarity.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, nothing with the motherboard was what they what was kind of the the rule of thumb for on our side of the fence. It's kind of like how you tell a customer what you can and can't plug into these type of generators. And nowadays, yeah, yeah, you can hit the ground running. Absolutely. And then kind of kind of going back to your point, we we have been bringing out a lot of new inverter generators and and newer machines in the tri-fuel capacity, as well as, you know, we've always had the dual fuel, but now we've got tri-fuel and just about everything, so the customers can use gas, propane, as well as natural gas, which is a huge advantage if they have natural gas at their house, they don't have to, you know, chase it or store it, is what I like to tell customers so they don't have to worry about you know looking for it or babysitting it. If you know regular gas, it's just they just have a quick connect, like a barbecue pit or something on the side of their house, they can just hook right up to that and go back inside the house and and be a hero for the wife. She can watch her housewives again. What all what we all want.
How Electricians Partner With DuroMax
SPEAKER_01Yep, yeah, really good. Jesse, when uh when an electrician contacts you for the first time, and maybe you even by now you have a way you talk about this and ask if they're one of our members. Is that kind of how it works? And walk us through how how did your average electrician find you or or get a hold of you, even?
Turnkey Installs And Sales Enablement
SPEAKER_04Well, I do I do ask them a lot of times. We get we have a spot on our website for inquiries, but I do like to ask them, you know, where they did find us, uh, how they heard of us, and and kind of get a feel for I I reach out to personally every every dealerslash installer, and I'm sure you guys can vouch for that, and talk to myself and just kind of get a better understanding of what they're doing. And then also at the same time, what I also want them to do is understand every advantage that we can offer them. So we're not just a place you can just call up and order a generator. I could ship directly to the customer's address blind with no pricing involved. Send your electrician the tracking. So essentially what I tell him is you don't have to do any heavy lifting. We'll do all the work, send you the tracking, you show up with your cape on, you hook it up, and you tell me where you want the next one ready, and I'll gift wrap it and send it to his neighbor, because that's usually how it works. Once uh everybody starts figuring out you know how much money you saved, you know, the guy on the corner, it kind of snowballs. And that's usually kind of how the uh the conversations kind of kind of go. But I do I do like to kind of have a quick conversation with with each guy just to kind of, for the most part, make sure they understand what we offer so they can uh so that they're as I like to call them a good informed general for our product out in the field, because you know, we do we do a lot of things behind the scenes, our copper windings, our real long warranty, which is five years on almost every machine now. Um, and those some of those things cost a lot and they make a big difference. And if an electrician isn't aware, he's he's doesn't have that tool in his tool belt is the way I look at it. So I want to make sure he understands everything that uh that I could supply him with it'll that'll make his closing rate and his job, you know, drive down that bumpy road justified.
SPEAKER_01Joe, I saw you light up there when Jesse was talking about basically you don't have to lift a finger, we'll do all the heavy lifting. What happened in your mind there?
SPEAKER_03So the biggest issue that I found with the misconception about portable generators is like, oh, the customer's gonna have to wheel it out and they're gonna have to pull start it, and they're gonna have to go by flashlight. And that's not at all the case. And I love that Jesse is really emulating that turnkey service you can provide. So the first thing that came to my mind was what's turnkey? Emergency backup lighting, automatic connect or anti-theft anchor points, and then having easy transfer systems and having everything wheeled out and having the storm light outlets. Like that's what I think of turn, doing all the permits, doing all the inspections, coordinating it, setting it up, maintaining it. So when I hear turnkey for generators, my brain instantly goes to solutions, and I'm like, yes, we're working with the right person.
SPEAKER_01Okay, Jesse. So we're getting a ton of great feedback. You saw a big push. You guys are picking up truckloads, trailer loads of these things. Uh, what's next? You said warehouse in Texas. Uh, what's next for Duramax beyond that?
SPEAKER_04We've got our warehouse in Texas, which is definitely going to be gonna be huge. Um, our warehouse, like I mentioned, in Tennessee and California are already factory service centers. We've got our own techs there with all our parts in stock. And the Texas warehouse will be the exact same with uh with our own guys there, our own parts in stock. Meanwhile, you know, going on parts, we do have service centers all over the country in the interim, but it's nice to have our own factory service centers um, you know, essentially located or at least in uh you know three different locations here soon enough. Um, we're bringing out a lot of different machines um in the next few months. We're gonna have a lot of different products coming out. Um, to be brutally honest with you, this recent ice storm basically expedited everything, is the best way to put it. We had a lot of things that were quote unquote on the back burner that we were kind of thinking about, and uh, but we, for lack of better words, had a lot of stock of our of our current models on the shelf before it was even worth kind of uh you know investing into and bringing in. Well, that ship sailed. I mean, right now we're looking at, okay, we're almost out of a couple of machines um as it is right now, and a lot all the other ones are are getting a lot skinnier. So the good news is we're gonna be bringing out a lot of new stuff spring and uh and summer. We're gonna have a lot of brand new products, inverters, um, some some really cool inverters that we're gonna be able to share with our customers, as well as some new open frames. Um, so we're definitely got a lot of a lot of stuff that get got expedited. It wasn't wasn't gonna be due till the end of summer, it's gonna probably be ready to go March, April, like real quick. Well, this this uh this video is still warm.
Sales Surge And Flagship 13k Units
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's awesome. How many units do you think if you could ballpark like how many homeowners got new units? Let me put it that way, in this last little surge for you guys.
SPEAKER_04For the company, it'd be hard to gauge because there's so many different channels, to be honest with you. The um I I only really kind of keep good have a good barometer on come my own sales, but I can tell you I for what it's worth, I know personally I had my strongest month in over a year and a half. I would say, I mean, I I've sold probably a a couple thousand generators, uh, and they were there were a lot of the the bigger ones too. In the past, we've had a lot of a lot of uh big orders, but a lot of times there were some smaller units. This time it was all 13,000s or 15,000s, or even some of our 16,000 inverters. I mean, it was nobody wanted to play around anymore. 13,000s were flying. I mean, everybody that I that we've discussed earlier was a 13,000 customer. Uh that's our our pretty much our our flagship model for home power.
SPEAKER_03I personally have the 13 and absolutely love it. So I don't blame them at all for wanting to jump on it.
SPEAKER_01That's right. Since our last podcast, Joe actually got one himself for his house and then made trainings based on the installation, didn't you?
Training, Maintenance, And Real Preparedness
SPEAKER_03Exactly. Yeah, we haven't set up, and we're also gonna be doing maintenance series on it and everything when it's time for the tune-ups. But it was great. I had all the system set up, everything ready to go. When the storm came, my generator was ready to go. I had already shoveled the snow out to make sure there was a path for it. Everything was installed over the it was great. I was like, we didn't lose power, thanks be to God, but at the same time, if we did, I was crossing my fingers like we would. I was like, I want to lose it. Give me an hour. Just give me an hour out. I want the block out and I want to flex it. That's pretty much it.
SPEAKER_01I love it. The way Mel's been helping you, I'm surprised she didn't go just flip a breaker just to see you uh peak excitement there.
SPEAKER_03You know what? I'm gonna pass that message along. Be like, yeah, am I ever feeling down? Please just turn the main breaker off. And I'll be like, Yeah, we lost it. All right, sweet. Run outside. I'm making a video.
Partner Perks, Pricing, And Contact
SPEAKER_01That one comes with some background knowledge. I know Mel was treating Joe like it was his uh his birthday here this morning. So at the time of this recording, anyway. Um, no, excellent stuff. If you guys are just seeing Jesse for the first time, first time hearing about this, we have a partnership with Duramax. That's why uh we say we're powered by Duramax. To make sure you're on the inner loop with us as an SLE Pro. And if you're a member of the app, then you're going to get these great deals, which I believe is some of the best pricing around for Duramax. So excellent. Guys, please sign up. Take advantage of that. Jesse, is there anything else you need our listeners or viewers to know about Duramax on this visit to the show?
White-Glove Support And Customer Care
SPEAKER_04I would just like to extend an invitation to reach out to me if they have any questions. And even existing guys, if they want to if they want to share some ideas, I would love to hear what kind of marketing ideas they have. I can kind of help them out, put some graphics together. I can get them access to some of our images. Basically anything I can do to spin the needle to help them out. If they I've even called homeowners myself, if a customer, you know, because I'll be honest with we had some issues with some of the shipping delays, uh, you know, with some of the storms recently. So I'm the kind of guy that said, let me call your customer and from Duramax and just extend uh you know an apology for the fact that there's been some delays and let your customers know that I'm willing to do that kind of stuff. And it it's uh and I know that kind of stuff speaks volumes for you know on the customer's end that they feel like they were heard and and respected and uh you know not neglected or a face in the crowd. So I just want everybody that's on the other side of this uh this podcast to feel the same way, to be honest with you, and know that they uh they got someone here that helps. And I'm at my desk. Chances are I'm ready.
SPEAKER_01Uh Joe, anything for us before we part ways today?
Final Pitch: Portables As A Profit Niche
SPEAKER_03If I could just make one blanket statement to electrician out there, that's what I want to do. So the biggest thing is that a lot of us really don't understand that when a customer says they want a generator, they don't necessarily know what's available. And the biggest misconception is that we always assume that they want the automatics. But I can personally vouch that portables are not only the most profitable way of getting into it, but has the best lifetime retention, really high satisfaction for customers, tons of customization that can be attached to it. Guys, if you're not involved in portable generators, you're missing out on a huge niche market. And I, if nothing else, don't take my word for it. Just explore it for yourself. Either look at some of the wins that have been there, look at some of the options you can make, and I guarantee you're gonna find something worth the investment. Just take it from me there.
SPEAKER_01Absolutely. And check that link below for all the information to get a hold of Jesse. For anyone that's just listening and wants it most conveniently, Jesse, how can they get a hold of you or find out more information?
