He was malnourished, bruised, and had clearly suffered abuse before his death. Despite a massive investigation, no one came forward to identify him, and he became known simply as “America’s Unknown Child.”
Police pursued thousands of leads over decades, including tips from psychics, witnesses, and possible family connections, but the case went cold. The boy was buried and reburied several times as investigators continued to search for answers.
In 2022, advances in forensic genealogy finally led authorities to identify him as Joseph Augustus Zarelli. However, while his name was confirmed, the circumstances of his life and death remain largely unclear. Investigators have not definitively identified who killed him, though they believe the answer may lie within his family.
The case remains a tragic symbol of lost identity and unresolved justice, even after more than six decades.
