00:00:00:10 - 00:00:03:19
Welcome to the AEC Groundbreaking Growth podcast.
00:00:03:24 - 00:00:06:24
Hosted by Stambaugh Ness.
00:00:27:18 - 00:00:28:09
Hi everyone,
00:00:28:09 - 00:00:31:09
and welcome to the AEC Groundbreaking Growth podcast.
00:00:31:09 - 00:00:36:28
I am your host, Emily Lawrence, and I am here with my co-host, Jen Knox.
00:00:37:00 - 00:00:43:27
We really just wanted to start off with an episode to describe our backgrounds
00:00:43:27 - 00:00:49:13
and give a little bit of context on the conception of this podcast
00:00:49:13 - 00:00:53:06
and what it means to us, and what we hope it will mean to listeners.
00:00:53:28 - 00:00:57:09
So I will go ahead and jump into my background.
00:00:57:09 - 00:01:02:00
I have a degree in strategic and organizational
00:01:02:00 - 00:01:03:21
communications.
00:01:03:21 - 00:01:06:11
I started out my career
00:01:06:11 - 00:01:09:11
working for Zillow
00:01:10:02 - 00:01:13:02
in client engagement and agent support.
00:01:13:25 - 00:01:16:06
Tech startup was sort of
00:01:16:06 - 00:01:21:04
my first introduction to a big kid job.
00:01:21:04 - 00:01:24:06
And then, from there, I worked for Walmart.
00:01:25:11 - 00:01:28:02
I moved to Bentonville, Arkansas, and I worked for the Walmart
00:01:28:02 - 00:01:32:11
headquarters, and I worked in operations.
00:01:32:11 - 00:01:36:06
And then, I moved into merchandising from there.
00:01:36:28 - 00:01:39:17- 00:01:43:14
From that I knew I wanted to get into marketing,
00:01:43:14 - 00:01:49:02
I got a job at a small architecture firm in Colorado Springs.
00:01:49:02 - 00:01:54:11
I worked for them and joined SMPS, Society for Marketing Professional Services.
00:01:54:13 - 00:01:57:12
I made some connections and,
00:01:57:12 - 00:02:02:05
from there, worked for a national full-service firm in Denver
00:02:02:23 - 00:02:06:23
and did marketing for them internally.
00:02:06:23 - 00:02:12:12
I worked from there at a general contractor here in Colorado.
00:02:13:00 - 00:02:15:12
And got experience there.
00:02:15:12 - 00:02:20:21
And now, I am at Stambaugh Ness working as a consultant
00:02:20:21 - 00:02:25:05
in our Strategic Growth Advisory Group and I work with Jen.
00:02:25:05 - 00:02:30:04
Jen is also my coworker on the SGA team. And
00:02:32:04 - 00:02:35:21
I do mainly outsourced marketing,
00:02:35:23 - 00:02:39:09
and marketing strategy as well for firms.
00:02:39:09 - 00:02:42:09
We have clients all over the country,
00:02:42:24 - 00:02:44:23
even some international clients,
00:02:44:23 - 00:02:47:23
and provide a host of services for them.
00:02:48:17 - 00:02:49:20
I love my job.
00:02:49:20 - 00:02:51:08
I love being a consultant.
00:02:51:08 - 00:02:57:22
I have had my experience working in AE and C, and I love this industry,
00:02:57:22 - 00:03:01:24
and I love getting to work with all the clients that we do
00:03:01:27 - 00:03:04:27
and getting to see what's going on in the industry.
00:03:05:18 - 00:03:08:21
So that kind of takes this up to now, as your hosts.
00:03:08:25 - 00:03:12:05
Jen, do you want to provide a little bit of your background as well?
00:03:12:05 - 00:03:13:19
Yeah, I’d love to.
00:03:13:19 - 00:03:19:29
So similar to Emily, I've worked in AEC a majority of my career.
00:03:20:16 - 00:03:23:07
My background is actually in civil engineering, so I have a
00:03:23:07 - 00:03:27:01
BS and MS in that, but really, as soon as I entered the workforce,
00:03:27:01 - 00:03:30:07
I really stepped into construction more than anything
00:03:30:24 - 00:03:33:25
and worked as an owners project manager
00:03:34:08 - 00:03:37:08
at a large Fortune 500 organization
00:03:37:09 - 00:03:40:09
for seven, about seven or eight years.
00:03:40:12 - 00:03:43:10
So in that role, I was really responsible the whole way
00:03:43:10 - 00:03:46:20
from RFP for design
00:03:47:01 - 00:03:52:13
for our design team members, the whole way through construction,
00:03:52:13 - 00:03:57:20
and then turn over to our operations and fiscal management teams.
00:03:57:20 - 00:03:59:19
Had the opportunity to work
00:03:59:19 - 00:04:03:22
internationally and manage construction work in Malaysia and Mexico
00:04:03:22 - 00:04:07:19
and throughout the US, which was a great experience.
00:04:07:19 - 00:04:11:20
And doing that, I really fell in love with kind of the business
00:04:11:20 - 00:04:13:09
side of engineering and
00:04:14:07 - 00:04:16:20
what are the economics behind
00:04:16:20 - 00:04:20:05
these projects that large organizations are trying to execute, right?
00:04:20:06 - 00:04:24:03
What's the return they're looking for, and what's kind of the dynamic behind it?
00:04:24:20 - 00:04:31:10
So I decided to go out and do an executive MBA, which was such an eye-opener.
00:04:31:10 - 00:04:36:03
My cohort was made up of people from multiple
00:04:36:03 - 00:04:40:14
industries, health care, you know, everything under the sun.
00:04:40:14 - 00:04:42:12
So that was great exposure.
00:04:42:12 - 00:04:48:22
And through that, I decided to step over and start working for a small family-owned
00:04:48:22 - 00:04:53:03
business and heavy civil construction, heavy side work.
00:04:53:29 - 00:04:56:28
And again, that was another big eye-opener, right?
00:04:56:28 - 00:05:01:03
Coming from a large Fortune 500 where you have a lot of resources
00:05:01:13 - 00:05:05:15
at your disposal. It's very structured and formatted
00:05:05:15 - 00:05:09:12
and whatnot, to small family business.
00:05:09:21 - 00:05:11:16
It's definitely a different dynamic.
00:05:11:16 - 00:05:14:23
It's a lot of bootstrapping it, which is amazing, right?
00:05:15:02 - 00:05:17:12
As an employee, you get a lot of flexibility.
00:05:17:12 - 00:05:21:02
You can see multiple aspects of the business.
00:05:21:02 - 00:05:22:12
You wear a lot of hats.
00:05:23:19 - 00:05:25:18
But I think it really opened my eyes
00:05:25:18 - 00:05:30:06
to; I guess a little bit, that lack of resources, right?
00:05:30:06 - 00:05:34:27
These people are amazing at what they do, great at site construction, electrical,
00:05:34:27 - 00:05:39:06
mechanical, etc., the skilled trades, they're amazing at that,
00:05:39:08 - 00:05:43:05
and they can maybe use a little bit of support and guidance
00:05:43:05 - 00:05:47:00
on some of the business aspects, HR, strategy, etc.,
00:05:47:03 - 00:05:51:19
and that's why I then decided to step over to Stambaugh Ness as a consultant
00:05:51:28 - 00:05:55:00
and really see how we can help
00:05:55:00 - 00:05:58:00
businesses with the business side of the business,
00:05:58:09 - 00:06:02:15
how we can help the AEC industry with those other components
00:06:02:15 - 00:06:06:23
of running an organization and growing and whatnot.
00:06:06:23 - 00:06:09:21
So that's a little bit about my background.
00:06:09:21 - 00:06:12:09
I love AEC; I grew up in it.
00:06:12:09 - 00:06:14:28
My dad is in construction, so
00:06:16:09 - 00:06:16:27
it's just a
00:06:16:27 - 00:06:19:27
it's a great industry to work in, and I'm excited about this podcast.
00:06:20:05 - 00:06:25:18
So, Emily, I guess give us a little bit of background on how the idea for
00:06:25:18 - 00:06:31:10
the podcast came about and kind of where we landed from a formatting standpoint
00:06:31:10 - 00:06:35:10
and really what we hope our listeners can get out of it.
00:06:35:29 - 00:06:38:20
Yeah, So
00:06:38:20 - 00:06:42:04
when I joined Stambaugh Ness,
00:06:42:06 - 00:06:47:10
we had an AE advisory team, and it was a little bit of everything.
00:06:47:10 - 00:06:50:10
And then really my skills, obviously with my background
00:06:50:10 - 00:06:54:16
in marketing, I moved over to the Strategic Growth
00:06:54:16 - 00:06:57:23
Advisory with Scott Butcher, who is, our team leader
00:06:58:09 - 00:07:01:05
and is just he and I,
00:07:01:05 - 00:07:07:04
and after working with the advisory team and just seeing the immense
00:07:07:04 - 00:07:12:00
talent and well-connectedness of our team and
00:07:13:17 - 00:07:15:08
all of these people have something
00:07:15:08 - 00:07:19:26
really interesting to say and experience in the industry.
00:07:20:07 - 00:07:23:02
And it's something that I, I mean,
00:07:23:02 - 00:07:26:02
I had never experienced being around that type of,
00:07:26:06 - 00:07:30:11
you know, that group of people with that type of experience so broadly.
00:07:31:14 - 00:07:35:03
And so when I joined the Strategic Growth Advisory Team,
00:07:35:26 - 00:07:38:15
I pitched the idea to Scott, and I said, “Hey,
00:07:38:15 - 00:07:41:15
with all of these people at our
00:07:42:17 - 00:07:45:14
fingertips on our team,
00:07:45:14 - 00:07:49:03
what if we do a podcast?” I feel like it would be a really,
00:07:49:17 - 00:07:50:11
you know,
00:07:50:11 - 00:07:55:01
everyone has these crazy networks within the industry and know amazing people.
00:07:55:01 - 00:07:59:08
And I think we could really have something interesting here.
00:07:59:27 - 00:08:02:24
And Scott said I love the idea.
00:08:02:24 - 00:08:05:03
And so we sort of kicked around some different
00:08:05:03 - 00:08:08:07
formats, like, do you want to do an interview style?
00:08:08:07 - 00:08:09:29
Do we want to, you know...
00:08:09:29 - 00:08:15:01
and even then, Scott and I recorded a couple of pilot episodes
00:08:15:01 - 00:08:18:08
really early on just to test it out and see what it would take.
00:08:18:08 - 00:08:22:19
And I was doing research, and then our team underwent some growth,
00:08:22:19 - 00:08:26:13
and we were, you know, focused elsewhere for a little bit.
00:08:26:13 - 00:08:29:12
And so we, we put the project on pause.
00:08:29:12 - 00:08:32:25
And then, after our growth,
00:08:32:25 - 00:08:37:27
that included adding Jen to the team and some other team members. And
00:08:39:22 - 00:08:41:20
it sort of came back to life.
00:08:41:20 - 00:08:45:22
And so we started the discussion again, and wanted
00:08:46:05 - 00:08:49:05
I kind of wanted to change our approach on it because
00:08:49:08 - 00:08:52:08
with just doing like interview style,
00:08:53:07 - 00:08:54:21
like episodes, it
00:08:54:21 - 00:08:57:22
just, it didn't feel as organic to the way
00:08:57:22 - 00:09:01:20
we like to interact with our clients and the way we interact as a team.
00:09:02:06 - 00:09:05:11
So we changed our approach to maybe just having people on
00:09:05:11 - 00:09:07:26
and talking about trends that we're seeing in the industry
00:09:07:26 - 00:09:11:20
and just having a conversation, and we can share what we're seeing,
00:09:11:20 - 00:09:17:00
and the expert guests that we have on can share what they're seeing as well.
00:09:17:14 - 00:09:20:11
And so we really wanted it to be more of a conversation
00:09:20:11 - 00:09:23:11
and make it more of an approachable format for people.
00:09:23:27 - 00:09:28:11
And so we kind of brought it back to life, and we were playing around with that.
00:09:28:11 - 00:09:33:16
And then, really, my aha moment was when I was in our SMPS
00:09:33:19 - 00:09:39:21
Colorado Communications Committee meeting.
00:09:39:23 - 00:09:43:12
I was just listening to what everyone was discussing,
00:09:43:12 - 00:09:46:21
and I knew of a lot of things just because
00:09:47:19 - 00:09:50:15
I work with people all over the country.
00:09:50:15 - 00:09:53:26
I get to see what other firms are doing; I get to talk to people
00:09:53:26 - 00:09:58:18
that are using different software or, you know, management systems. And
00:10:00:15 - 00:10:02:29
it's just a different world, right?
00:10:02:29 - 00:10:07:05
When you work with people all over the country, then to just sort of
00:10:07:10 - 00:10:10:28
use what you're using at your firm, which I have also been in that position.
00:10:10:28 - 00:10:13:14
So I know what that's like.
00:10:13:14 - 00:10:15:14
So for me, I had this aha
00:10:15:14 - 00:10:18:25
moment where, you know, I was kind of being asked like, Oh,
00:10:18:25 - 00:10:23:17
wow, you know, about so many things like how do you get all this information?
00:10:23:17 - 00:10:29:18
And it's like, man, if I could help people in the industry,
00:10:29:20 - 00:10:34:00
just share my knowledge of what's going on because of the unique position
00:10:34:00 - 00:10:39:00
that we're in as consultants, I think that would be a game changer for people.
00:10:39:14 - 00:10:43:07
And the way that we started looking at it was,
00:10:43:27 - 00:10:48:16
you know, when you're at a conference or when you're around other professionals
00:10:48:16 - 00:10:52:29
in some sort of learning environment or setting where everyone's just sharing
00:10:52:29 - 00:10:54:19
what they have going on,
00:10:54:19 - 00:10:57:17
and you come back to work, and you're excited,
00:10:57:17 - 00:11:01:24
and you've learned all these new things, and then that kind of fades
00:11:01:24 - 00:11:05:18
because you get back to your day-to-day grind of what needs to get
00:11:05:18 - 00:11:06:02
done at your company.
00:11:07:14 - 00:11:07:28
And so
00:11:07:28 - 00:11:12:06
we really thought this would be an accessible way to continue
00:11:12:06 - 00:11:16:25
that conversation for people and the ease of access.
00:11:16:26 - 00:11:21:21
You can access it at any time and just hopefully share ideas
00:11:21:21 - 00:11:24:21
that we learn and trends that we're seeing.
00:11:25:07 - 00:11:29:12
And that sort of brings us to today.
00:11:29:15 - 00:11:33:12
And with Jen, your background just of, you know,
00:11:33:12 - 00:11:37:29
you have such an interesting background with your engineering degree,
00:11:37:29 - 00:11:39:28
so you've been on that technical side,
00:11:39:28 - 00:11:43:13
and then I've sort of been on that support and marketing side.
00:11:44:08 - 00:11:46:23
And with our expertise
00:11:46:23 - 00:11:49:23
and sort of being next-gen leaders ourselves,
00:11:50:03 - 00:11:54:06
that really was the area that we wanted to focus on as well as information
00:11:54:06 - 00:11:58:17
for our next-gen leaders and starting the conversation for them.
00:11:59:08 - 00:12:02:18
And when you first, you know, tapped on me
00:12:02:18 - 00:12:06:00
and asked to see if I was interested at all.
00:12:06:00 - 00:12:10:17
And when you explained that kind of energy around
00:12:10:17 - 00:12:11:27
when you get to collaborate
00:12:11:27 - 00:12:16:13
with other industry professionals, that just resonated with me so much. And
00:12:17:20 - 00:12:20:16
it's tough for middle management
00:12:20:16 - 00:12:24:22
young leaders to find the time to step outside the business
00:12:25:06 - 00:12:29:29
and collaborate and think strategically about their organization.
00:12:30:23 - 00:12:34:05
And that's why I think we have such a unique opportunity to share
00:12:34:05 - 00:12:37:22
ideas and trends that we're seeing with those next-gen leaders.
00:12:38:03 - 00:12:41:15
And it's tough to step outside of the day-to-day
00:12:41:15 - 00:12:44:17
grind and work on your business and not just in it.
00:12:45:03 - 00:12:47:26
And I hope what we can share with
00:12:47:26 - 00:12:53:18
those leaders is just the little tidbits, you know, gold nuggets,
00:12:53:18 - 00:12:57:24
different trends we're seeing and that, you know, other clients are experiencing.
00:12:57:24 - 00:13:00:24
What are their challenges around workforce, around
00:13:01:17 - 00:13:05:02
business strategy and, you know, different
00:13:05:02 - 00:13:08:17
legal aspects and whatnot, and how can we help them
00:13:09:26 - 00:13:14:08
or broaden their perspective on what opportunities are out there
00:13:14:08 - 00:13:17:13
different resources they can leverage to solve
00:13:17:13 - 00:13:19:14
some of the tougher problems in their organization?
00:13:21:07 - 00:13:22:07
I'm excited, and
00:13:22:07 - 00:13:25:07
I hope that people find it useful
00:13:26:04 - 00:13:29:12
to kind of tap into that energy on a more frequent basis
00:13:29:12 - 00:13:34:18
than having to go to conferences or other industry organizations.
00:13:34:21 - 00:13:38:01
Then wait for those to happen.
00:13:38:04 - 00:13:38:17
Right?
00:13:38:17 - 00:13:41:07
It's like they aren't just at your fingertips.
00:13:41:07 - 00:13:44:14
And that's this accessibility that we really wanted
00:13:44:14 - 00:13:48:04
to share with listeners and bring to the industry.
00:13:48:04 - 00:13:51:20
And we also really want it to be a collaborative space.
00:13:51:20 - 00:13:55:24
So as a listener, we want people to engage, and we want
00:13:55:24 - 00:14:00:08
people to let us know what they are seeing or what they would like to know about.
00:14:00:21 - 00:14:04:11
So we really want it to be a conversation, and we really want
00:14:04:11 - 00:14:08:06
this to be a platform to talk about what people are interested in.
00:14:09:21 - 00:14:12:27
And it's really about the industry as a whole, right?
00:14:12:27 - 00:14:18:07
How can everyone, A-E-C, all these people in different firms,
00:14:18:14 - 00:14:21:14
how can we just elevate the industry
00:14:21:14 - 00:14:23:06
and make it one,
00:14:23:06 - 00:14:28:08
maybe more attractive as an employment opportunity, or really leverage
00:14:28:08 - 00:14:31:27
what we're doing on our projects to benefit the community more?
00:14:32:04 - 00:14:32:11
Right.
00:14:32:11 - 00:14:35:11
What are all those ways that we can just
00:14:35:13 - 00:14:38:01
be a little bit better and one, you know,
00:14:38:01 - 00:14:41:01
1% improvement day over day for the industry as a whole?
00:14:41:22 - 00:14:44:09
Yeah, Yeah, absolutely.
00:14:44:09 - 00:14:49:06
So that is the background on Groundbreaking Growth.
00:14:49:09 - 00:14:52:26
And so we hope that everyone is able to take
00:14:53:16 - 00:14:56:16
some sort of nuggets away, like you mentioned, Jen,
00:14:57:17 - 00:14:59:06
and really just engage with us.
00:14:59:06 - 00:15:02:10
So, we hope that this is a beneficial
00:15:04:24 - 00:15:07:23
way of gaining knowledge and insights. Yes.
00:15:07:23 - 00:15:12:29
And kudos to Emily for the idea and keeping it going.
00:15:12:29 - 00:15:15:10
And we're super excited to launch.
00:15:15:10 - 00:15:16:06
Yes. Yes.
00:15:16:06 - 00:15:20:25
It has been a long inception process from start to finish,
00:15:20:25 - 00:15:25:01
but we are very excited about it, and I think we have come up with a
00:15:25:01 - 00:15:28:01
really unique experience.
00:15:30:05 - 00:15:34:25
Well, thank you all, and we hope you enjoy our future episodes.
