Hard Work Motto And Setup
SPEAKER_02Hard work makes talent.
SPEAKER_01Love that.
SPEAKER_02So just doing that and saying keeping in mind that any goal is possible. Like nothing's too small, nothing's too big.
SPEAKER_00You're the most decorated racquetball player in US history. World's strongest man. From childhood passion to professional athlete. Eight-time Iron Man champion. So what was it like making your debut in the NHL? What is your biggest piece of advice for the next generation of athletes? From underdogs to national champions. This is the Athletes Podcast, where high-performance individuals share their triumphs, defeats, and life lessons to educate, entertain, and inspire the next generation of athletes. Here we go.
First Impressions Of Dev Camp
SPEAKER_01And we have the pleasure of chatting here on the 287th episode of the Athens Podcast. Again, featuring Danny and Haley. And I'm going to go Danny and Haley that way. We are here in Calgary for Cook Stark Management's second annual development camp. As my legs get compressed here. I want to know first off for you guys, first time here Dev Camp. What are your thoughts? Initially heading in.
SPEAKER_02For me, I think it's a dream come true, honestly, being able to be on the ice with people, professional, female Nazi players, and being able to showcase my skill with them and then kind of see what I have to do to get to the next level. Yeah, I think like this camp has just been super amazing. And like being able to play against players that, you know, are like in the league and in the PWHL, and obviously that's both of our dreams to get there. So just seeing like what the pace and like what we have to do to get to that level. And I think just like also the coaches here, they've been so helpful. They've helped us like learn stuff that we didn't like really think to learn. And I think it's just like a great overall camp.
SPEAKER_01It's crazy to see from last year we had 12 people at our dev camp in Denver. Only 12. Only 12. And now we have 25. Wow. We literally doubled, right? This year at the draft in Detroit, we went from having what was it, four players drafted to now having 16.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that's awesome.
SPEAKER_01So obviously, we're scaling. We have people like Vivo Barefoot, like Hyper Rice, like Can I Wellness Boost Products, all of these different amazing brands that are supporting us. Yeah. But that's because we have incredible athletes like yourselves coming, training, taking part in this, and buying into what we're building here at Cookstart Management. Because ultimately we're trying to provide you guys what us men have been provided for decades, when in reality, you guys deserve that same attention, that same support, whether it's financial, whether it's brand deals.
Penn State Year One Highlights
SPEAKER_01I'm curious, you go to PSU, you're heading to Ohio State. Maybe we'll start with you, Daniel. What are your thoughts on after your first year of NCAA hockey, what that was like?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I think it was just a great experience. Like when I was younger, I always dreamt of going to university, and like PSU was just such a great school. And I think for us, like my first year was we were hosting the Frozen Four, so that was just like our goal to get there. And we obviously accomplished that. And I think just having that as my like first experience as like a freshman and just an overall first year, I think it was just amazing. Super cool to like be a part of. And yeah, now I can just like take what I learned from my seniors and what I learned in the past year and and bring it into the next, I guess, three or four years.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, who knows? You might figure out it before then, but we uh oh I was gonna say yes it will.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, right, right.
SPEAKER_01We got to actually get to get down to PSU to Hockey Valley and to watch the White Out game. That was an incredible atmosphere, cold as heck. I know the ice wasn't also ideal for you guys. Can you tell me a bit about what that game was like?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it was actually it was such a cool experience. Like being able to play in Beaver Stadium, like you don't really get to do that often, and it was like the first for our whole program. So it was just like a surreal home. And uh yeah, obviously you said like the ice wasn't the best, but like you never really get to do that again. So it was just so like cool. We got new jerseys and everything, and yeah, it was just like such a cool experience for the freshman season.
SPEAKER_01Once in a lifetime, yeah, legitimately. Okay, Ohio State.
SPEAKER_02Ohio State.
Why Ohio State Felt Right
SPEAKER_02The Ohio.
SPEAKER_01I forgot the draft intro, my bad. What's uh what sold you on that school? We talked about on the ride here, but obviously you've got some incredible alumni that had been there in the past. So what what was it that sold Haley McDonald on going there?
SPEAKER_02Uh for me it was kind of like right when I stepped on campus. I remember thinking when I was in the car when my bad and I got picked up, but I think I'm gonna go here, but I just wanted to be sure. But for me, it was the facilities, the coaches, and the way that the team culture was. I felt like a part of the team, even though I was just going on my visit, and the coaches treated me so so well, and I have like the goals that they have are very close to what I want to achieve, and they always want to get better, and the coaching staff was top tier, and the players and the atmosphere is just way up there.
SPEAKER_01That's what you get when you get at one of the top levels D1 NCAA sports in all capacities, right? I think I had Emma Monte on the podcast a few years ago, obviously, an Ohio State alone as well. She talked about, she raved about the facilities. Trailer player played lacrosse there a few years ago, played with my brother. And again, you guys pull some of the best athletes, hence why you're heading there. But you also have the facilities and the organization to be able to support that, right? And yeah, I'm jealous. Have they never been able to cross down that 49th parallel and play in the NCAA? I look at PSU, I look at the Ohio State. I'm jealous to say the least.
Recovery Tools That Keep You Ready
SPEAKER_01Tell me about Normatex. I know you guys both used them in the past. We're rocking them right now. What other recovery modalities are you guys using? Do you rock these when you're at school? Are you going in the sauna, ice bath? How do you guys use to stay in tip-top shape?
SPEAKER_02Oh, little furbs because I'm not anywhere study. Yeah, I guess like our facility has like a bunch of stuff to like recover. I think we just got like a big new facility, is it's like Greenberg Recovery. So it has like the sauna, the ice baths, and the hot tubs, and then like this hyper barric chamber.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_02Nice. So like we got a lot of stuff like that to use, but we have normal techs like in our lobby and like our dressing room. So I definitely use those, and I think it's a great way to recover. But yeah, just going into the sauna when I can or like the hot tub or like the cold tub just to just to recover and then not actually stretching, because that's a big part.
SPEAKER_01You guys have been two of the first on the ice and some of the last two off the ice for the first couple days of camp. Kudos to you for doing that. Obviously, you see what's ahead. It's a long road, but you guys are putting in the work right now. What about you? You seem pretty dedicated for fresh out of high school.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I mean, I always try to be the first on and last off ever since uh like triple R. So I don't know. It's just something I've always done.
SPEAKER_01The uh last episode that we had, episode 286, featuring Brooks like Washington Capitol's alumni, I like to think of him as probably one of the best blue guy camaraderie colleagues in the NHL as I've heard him described by others.
Building Routines From Role Models
SPEAKER_01But he talked about the fact that basically at 13 years old, he made the commitment that he was gonna work every single day to go to the NHL and do whatever it took. Whether that meant going to bed at 9 a.m. every night to make sure he just got enough sleep, whether that meant eating specific meals during the day, he was dedicated. Do you guys have, I guess, athletes that you looked up to that you follow along or try to follow in their footsteps and some of the guidelines that they've provided, or are you doing it all yourself, building your own routines? What does that look like for each of you?
SPEAKER_02Well, for me, it's a bit of both, but I always my whole career and I always just wanted to kind of be like her, so always kind of watch what she's doing on and off the ice and kind of keep up with that, then I'll still implementing my oak stuff. That's in like eating better, trying to shoot clocks every day, and staying on on the ice longer than everybody else who had stuff like that. Like I said, going to bed earlier, trying to if I can't sleep, but um Yeah.
SPEAKER_01That's what gets you to uh captain of the U18 hockey. No big deal. What are you, Danny?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I think like growing up, I definitely idolized you know, like defensemen like Clint Hughes or Carolyn Carr. Like, I think their playing styles are just so unique and so deceptive. So I think definitely I looked up to them, but for like styles, especially going into like university, just like seeing how everyone like eats and every how everyone like just kind of like the covers, hydrates, like it's like an everyday thing, and like obviously like I did that growing up, but I think it's just like more focused during in university. So just like seeing people do that, I think it's just like unique, and I I definitely want to like implement that more. So I've been like creating different food things and eating lots of steak things to your dad. Yeah, eating a lot of steaks and ground beef from my dad. So no, but uh yeah, it's it's definitely like cool and there's so many like healthy options that you guys that you can like choose to eat and do. So yeah, I think it's just doing that and analyzing quick names panel car and just like focusing on on recovery to get to the next model.
SPEAKER_01Heck yeah, yeah, you gotta shout out your dad shop.
SPEAKER_02Me, yeah, farmhouse butchery.
SPEAKER_01Farmhouse butchery. Some of the best steaks I've ever consumed can confirm. We had about 40 of them on the barbecue deanless, cooking them up. Exceptional, exceptional work.
Energy Boosts And Sponsor Support
SPEAKER_01Uh, do you guys think we need a boost? Yeah, I think we need a boost. I think we need a boost. Are you gonna break it open or you won't be a boost? Yeah, you got you. All right, all right, all right. So today we're having can I boost? This is an incredible product, something that I used before. I go play hockey myself, not to the same level as these ladies, but to try and stop the puck, sometimes you need a little extra energy and a little bit of boost. This product specifically contains vitamin B12, theamine, green tea extract, caffeine, ubiquinol, and rhodiola. So you gotta do one primer spray. There you go, you see that, and now we get eight. And it's a slightly longer commercial, but we'll fast forward that part. And you guys will be able to see how much more energized we are over the next 15 minutes. Yeah, give it a go. Nice. There you go. I like to go under the tongue and it sits nicely. There you go. That's canide boosts. We're gonna see if you guys notice a difference over the next little bit. But they have four products. I also consumed a bit of the mend last night because I got to go from Langley.
SPEAKER_02Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Uh that was pretty I know, Big X, LO Langling. Big X could use a development training camp as well. We gotta get him on a on a diet plan, but that's okay. Ella Langling was great. Stampede is
Canada Pride And Rivalries
SPEAKER_01great. You guys have obviously been to Calgary before.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Born in Canada, both of you. I like to feature highlighted Canadian athletes. What do you love about Canada? And how hard did it hurt watching that Olympic Games?
SPEAKER_02Um, obviously, Canada is amazing. Yeah, I think just like it's our country, and we want to like obviously represent and you know it's just something that like we grew up with and we want to like take pride in it and everything. Yeah, I was you know, like the girls and the boys was a little like to watch. And I was down in the States when it was happening, so all my teammates were chirping me and and everything, but uh it was great to see like on the woman's side, uh, some of my uh Tessa Janicky, like she got to win the gold medal. So obviously, like that was good to see, and and obviously it was like great for her, and and yeah, I'm not gonna like take away from their their winner anything, but I'm Canada, it's through my heart and everything. So yeah, I wish they would have pulled through, but yeah, it's it's just like a great experience with the Olympics and everything, too.
SPEAKER_01And I know you got snubbed from some Team Canada stuff. We weren't gonna highlight it, but I'm gonna bring it up because the next opportunity for Team Canada selections, I know you'll be a part of it. If size has anything to do with it, once they see you on the ice, they'll know that's not next year.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Right?
SPEAKER_02I don't like playing against you.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and you guys have your first game next year against each other. We do.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Your first game in the NCAA.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Danny's probably what's that?
SPEAKER_02Oh I guess uh a little friendly wager on this one.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, a little CSM client action. Maybe we will have some type of gift package.
SPEAKER_02Oh goodness. For the stink song.
Training For The NCAA Jump
SPEAKER_01How's that feeling heading into your first year? Obviously, you're doing stuff like this to prepare, but anything in particular that you have planned over the next month?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, just a lot of training. I feel like uh bear coach is a bit of a hard ass, but I love that. I mean uh she's very like keen on being conditioned and strong and resilient, so that just working to those points with like pushing past meds, like maybe almost throwing up after a gold spike, or like trying to get that one extra rep or something like that. So just pushing myself every single day just to prepare for that next level and being at university.
SPEAKER_01I am not gonna share names, but I know there was GM watching our camp yesterday that was drooling over you that had no idea that you were not even in the NCAA yet. So that's all I'm gonna say. People can put two and two together, but people are noticing. Obviously, when you have competitors on the ice that are performing, like you both are, people start to notice, right?
Favorite Places To Play Abroad
SPEAKER_01Favorite place you've ever been able to play? Hockey around the world. I always like to know.
SPEAKER_02Finland for sure. That was that was a good one. Yeah, that was that was just amazing. Even though we only got like three hours of sunlight, it was so cool.
SPEAKER_01You were there in that winter?
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it was for worlds. Yeah, it was such a cool experience.
SPEAKER_01So when you're playing in the worlds, when you are facing other countries, which country do you least like going up against?
SPEAKER_02It's not that I don't like playing against them, it's just I don't like I have nothing against them, but I don't really enjoy playing against the Americans, but I do at the same time. Really?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, for sure, they're hard competitors.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I also like playing against Czechia, because they're sneaky country, if I'm being honest.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, okay.
SPEAKER_02So I like Gary, I was gonna say, like, I think Czech is like kind of under the radar, and I think uh we always have like good games against them, and then obviously like Blue has like it's just the viral reason. So like you always are gonna have like a fun or a good game against them. So yeah, I think those two.
Quick Hitters And NCAA Adjustments
SPEAKER_01Okay, quick hitter questions.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_01Does pineapple belong on pizza?
SPEAKER_02No, yes. Oh no, but only only homemade pizzas. Okay, it can't be like almost or like what's what's the difference? Because it's like fresh pineapple. But like if it's from a can, okay. But like, no, no, you don't understand because it's like I feel like it gets soggy on like if it's in the box. Yeah, and I feel like it just like gets soggy, but like sometimes I put like I cook my pizza and then I put pineapple on top of that.
SPEAKER_01Oh cold.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Oh, so like a third option has been introduced.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I wasn't even wow. I I might have to try that sometime.
SPEAKER_02No, it's good, yes.
SPEAKER_01Okay, all right, all right. What was the difference for you going down to the states PSU adjustments as a Canadian? I think a lot of obviously athletes who are growing up in Canada look at the states they see the NCAA. See going to play a PSU, play alongside a guy like Gavin McKenna. What does that process look like for you? What were adjustments? What would be recommendations for that next gym?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I think like obviously I went kind of far away from home. And so I would get like homesick for a little bit, but you just like kind of want to look for a team that like kind of feels like a family. And I think that's like one of the reasons why I chose Penn State was because when I went there, like everyone was so welcoming and and it was just like such a great environment and culture. So like I just went there and I didn't like it. Was great. Like if I felt it's homesick, like they were there for me. Everyone was just like like it's such high level like compete. So like every practice, you're you're battling against like the best in on your team and like in your league and in the sports. So I think just like that factor is is kind of why I went towards the stakes. And yeah, I think like Hennessy is just obviously at good school and we kind of get like overlooked, but yeah, we I think we made like our mark this past year and we want to continue doing that too.
SPEAKER_01For sure, for sure you guys did. Not enough time golfing, hence why our golf games all struggled this year because we were too busy playing hockey, right?
SPEAKER_02Obviously.
SPEAKER_01How'd your team do? Who was that? Who else was in your courses?
SPEAKER_02Uh Morgan Smith and Jordan Sam Brano. Nice, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Nice. And who was the best out of the crew?
SPEAKER_02Uh I think we were all Morgan.
SPEAKER_01Morgan.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah. Morgan definitely was that next.
SPEAKER_01She was the next one.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, Danny, you look good too. Only on the second half. Better than no half. You you did a good on the first half. Yeah. This girl, first time ever golfing, and she's like, oh, like, I'm gonna be so bad. I bombed every single hit she takes a swing and miss like the first time, and then I get the ball. Yeah, literally.
SPEAKER_01No pictures on the scorecard.
SPEAKER_02No, exactly.
SPEAKER_01That's all that matters.
SPEAKER_02It was the practice swing. Yeah, and you just took like seven of them, but it stuck with the ground.
SPEAKER_01What's
Skill Work That Actually Translates
SPEAKER_01been uh what's been your guys' favorite part of the camp of the trip so far?
SPEAKER_02Honestly, I really like that estimate.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. That's good.
SPEAKER_02Like they're just like so like high level, and and like it's focusing on specific skills, which I really like. Like, I think sometimes in the offs we seem like to get stuck kind of doing like flow drills, which like you know, those are good, and it's good to do everything in a big group, but in a camp, I think like working on individual skills and kind of like skills that you want to kind of implement into games. Like, I think that's what we kind of end up doing here, and I think it's really cool, and I don't think like it the most fans of the yeah, no, I totally agree with that. Like back home, we don't have a lot of um specific people that might do stuff that like we've done the recently, but now I'll had a show from like myself, Danny, and Morgan things that we never would have thought to work on. And yesterday I couldn't really figure it out, but that eventually did.
SPEAKER_01But just getting a different perspective on things is like it just opens up so many more doors and kind of makes us think about different things that we can implement into our game and kind of figure out what we need to work on and just fontating everything instead of like just keeping up that sounds like I think I heard Woody in the van yesterday talking about the fact that she learned more like on those ice sessions than she did throughout her season.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, like I think again, like that's just like on like the specific skills, like especially when you're in like a team setting, like you're getting prepared for like your season, so you're kind of like getting those like quick touches and like kind of getting that chemistry built before like your first game or like this camp is like specified for like skills and stuff that little things that you need to work on to get better.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and that's part of the reason why we do it, so that when you guys are having conversations with GMs and when Alani, Lander, Claire are having those conversations with general managers, it's hey, we host this. What do you want them to work on? How can they get better? Where can we improve their skill set so that you do draft them or that you do play them more? Like, you know, there's a reason why we've continued to grow and scale, and obviously we're gonna continue to do that, but it's you guys putting in the work at the end of the day, too. So kudos to you for keeping on doing that. I can already tell I'm boosted up. I got a bit of more energy. Yeah, I can tell you guys are fired up from that. I am curious though, we have one ice section left. We have A scrimmage that's gonna happen at some
Toughest Goalie And Athlete Branding
SPEAKER_01point. Who's one person in this dressing room? Maybe let's start with goalies. Who's been the goalie that's been the hardest to score on this week so far?
SPEAKER_02Oh, I'm not good with names either.
SPEAKER_01Sandy?
SPEAKER_02I think so. Yeah, she's huge.
SPEAKER_01German national goalie.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah. I can't, I got just a brick wall. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01She's been.
SPEAKER_02I agree.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yeah. I mean, uh, you know, she's gonna be doing the same thing again at the WHO this year. She's been on Ingold Mag, she's been on the Athens podcast here. You know, she's one of our high-profile clients and someone who does an incredible job on the social media side. She's probably gonna end up with some Normatex. She's been, I'm gonna hook her up with Sensorina. We've got the Ingold Mag membership. But again, those are little things that as you guys continue to develop, not only your game, but building your brand off the ice, you end up benefits benefiting like Sandy does. She's got an incredible warrior deal, right? She's actually the only warrior-sponsored athlete other than Leon Dry's level.
SPEAKER_00Oh wow. No big deal.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, no big deal. No big deal, right? Yeah, it's it's cool. So I also want to just thank you guys for coming on, being a part of this because thank you for having us. It's an honor to highlight you guys now because you know, in two, three, four, five years, when you're in the PWHL, sniping 30, talks a game, you're getting rookie of the year, whatever happens next. I'll be able to have these conversations again with you, and we'll be able to look back and see, hey, you remember that? Talk and that's you know, this is cool.
Shout-Outs To Coaches And Family
SPEAKER_01You also have been impacted by a ton of coaches, teammates throughout the years. I always give people one opportunity to give a thanks, give a show-to, give a highlight to people who have made an impact in their life. So I'll maybe Danny, I'll let you start with you.
SPEAKER_02Okay, okay. Yeah, this is kind of a tough one because I have a lot of people to say. So but no, yeah, like when I was younger, like I had like Tyler Label, Jim Label, Derek Rock, my dad, and then like Venla and the men that Venla home be a men with Halkey, and then obviously like Chris Hogg, Garrett, and then like just going into like PSQ, like uh like Ragenna, Jeff, like all my training stuff there, like they have been amazing and helped me like get into the college level and get like prepared for like my first season and everything. And I think I my biggest shout-out for just like this past season would be like my senior class. Like, I think they they gave like they're so like inspirational and just kind of like really easy to like connect with. And they like brought our team up to where we wanted to go, we wanted to succeed. And yeah, I think like without them, like it wouldn't have been possible where we have gotten to as it's a full team. So yeah, definitely thanks to them, and they won't be missed.
SPEAKER_01But hey, but now you're part of that next yeah, you're gonna be that that next crew, right? Yeah, how about you, Haley? Um from Saskatchewan.
SPEAKER_02Born raised in Pega, yeah. Um for me, there's a there's a lot too. Um my younger years, my dad, obviously, Tony Bevan, Kent McKinnon, Janessa Panchuk, Nolan Yakowowski was a big one. He was he was the one who put a lot of faith in me when I was 13, and we still are really close now. Nice. And then I guess just going my older years, like Stay's that grides, Friggin Bolton, Kelsey Cole. Big uh big ones for me at Balmoral Hall where I quit in one quite, and then obviously coming to rank. Only had Chris for about three months, but still loved him. And Adam Cook and Garrett Fetterling definitely, definitely helped me out throughout the year.
SPEAKER_01We're gonna have a list. Yeah, yeah, they're we'll we'll make sure you're included on it. If you're not, you send us a note, we'll get your name there.
SPEAKER_02Sorry if I forget.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's I know it's impossible to do, but these are cool opportunities, and you know, those people are the ones that typically end up consuming this kind of content. So kudos and shout out to you two for being willing to come on, share your story. It's gonna help when we go have conversations with Typer Rice, when we talk of can I wellness, bio steel, perfect sports, whoever it is, and you guys are gonna benefit
Advice For The Next Generation
SPEAKER_01from it. The last question we ask every guest when we wrap up is their biggest piece of advice for the next generation of athletes 60 seconds, 30 seconds, quick hitter, who wants to start.
SPEAKER_02Then you go, no, you asked. Okay, for me, it's just always working hard because hard work makes talent. Well, talent doesn't work hard.
SPEAKER_01Love that. You know what I mean? Love that.
SPEAKER_02So just doing that and saying keeping in mind that any goal is possible. Like nothing's too small, nothing's too big. Well, I go by the code, like we work hard today to be better for tomorrow. So, like, that's just like the one percent better. And I think like, yeah, that's all you gotta do. Like, just get one percent better every day while just like having fun, just like putting in the effort. Like, if you're not putting in effort, you're obviously not working hard. So just effort, have fun, and get one per 1% better every single day.
SPEAKER_01Heck yeah. Future faces of the PWHL, right here, folks. 287th episode of the Athletes Podcast. Thank you very much for tuning in. Hope you have a great rest of your day. Thank you. Bye.
