Performance Beyond Athletics

SPEAKER_00

No, I love it. Yeah. And I think you hit on something like performance is not just for athletes. Like, of course, we are like that is part of our lifestyle, is like, you know, moving our bodies and like being an athlete. But I think performance is just being able to show up as our best selves every single day and just kind of having that like mental clarity and focus as we go through the day.

SPEAKER_02

So you're the most decorated racquetball player in US history. World's strongest man. From childhood passion to professional athlete. Eight-time Iron Man champion. So, what was it like making your debut in the NHL? What is your biggest piece of advice for the next generation of athletes? From underdogs to national champions. This is the Athletes Podcast, where high performance individuals share their triumphs, defeats, and life lessons to educate, entertain, and inspire the next generation of athletes. Here we go. All things can I wellness, health, fitness, wellness, your journey, my journey, how we've connected with Chris Lord and everyone else in between. It's been a fun ride over the past few years. I think we've established last time we spoke, you were interviewing me in the back of my converted van talking about Can I Wellness products as I prepared for the Toronto Lakeshore Marathon. Now, practically two months or two months, two years later, as I prepare for the New York City Marathon, we're here again. Not in person, but somewhat here together again today, chatting about KI Wellness, how things have been over the past few years, how I've been using the supplements, how you use the supplements. I've talked way too much already. Introduce the folks to yourself, who you are, what you do.

Rochelle’s RN Path And Wellness Basics

SPEAKER_00

Awesome. Well, hi everyone. My name is Rochelle. I am a former registered nurse, so I completed my Bachelor of Science in Nursing a couple years or three years now. And I worked in the healthcare field for like three months. And I was like, I just want to build something of my own. I ended up finding Can I Wellness two years ago, June of 2024. And yeah, I'm part of the marketing team here. I help with developing educational content. I'm also an athlete. So I I actually did my first ever high rocks in May of this year, which was the most challenging but like rewarding thing that I've ever done. Don't think I'll ever do again, TBH. Like it was a lot. So yeah, I personally really understand the importance of sleep recovery, energy, and like everything wellness, as I've kind of gone through my own health and wellness journey. I am a really big advocate for all the things that I just mentioned. And I do believe in making wellness simple. I think now, especially in the industry, we've overcomplicated things and we're like trying to like optimize everything. And I think wellness should just be really simple, kind of going back to the foundation of like sleep, nutrition, moving your body every single day, getting some sunlight, water, honestly. So yeah, so I do think that wellness should be simple and realistic for busy people, depending on where you are in your life, whether whether you're an athlete, you're busy professional, or you're a mom, like we're all in different seasons that require different things. So yeah, that's a little bit about me. And then I met Chris Lorde two years ago, which is the CEO of Can I Wellness? And I was really intrigued by the products because I literally have never seen a spray before. So I was like, wow, this is really cool. And I'm a huge believer on like trying the products before actually working with them. I do really stand behind that. And yeah, I tried the products and I was like, yeah, I'll definitely help you with your content marketing, especially because I have my science background. And it is a pretty complex product, which we'll kind of dive into a little bit. I have the sleep and the boost, a little bit deeper. Sorry?

SPEAKER_02

I gotta get jazzed up. I'll probably need the calm, the relaxed, the fresh here in a second.

SPEAKER_00

I know, right? I've actually been combining both of them before sleep is

How Athletes Actually Use The Stack

SPEAKER_00

best. Okay. Now I've chatted a little bit. Let's get into your story. Tell us a little bit more about the athletes podcast and how you became so connected to the professional athlete world through all those conversations, relationship. What have you noticed that the very best athletes do differently when it comes to taking care of themselves?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I mean, first off, it's what made me believe in the product. It's what you believed in when you started. I mean, I got introduced a few years ago also through Kelowna Hockey Fest. That's why I'm wearing this shirt. Chris brought me up there, introduced me to guys like Travis Martell, Mark Fitzgerald. They were using the products in the dressing rooms. The products were developed by and in collaboration with guys like Matt Duchesne and the NHL. He's a huge advocate of the products. I started using it that weekend, and now it's something that we give to all of our Cookstark management athletes, like we just did in Calgary for our development camp. We had 25 athletes on site, they each got a full setup. All four, I'm missing the green one, everyone's favorite flavor, green, the mend. I know, right?

SPEAKER_00

I just have my two favorite ones that I use.

SPEAKER_02

And honestly, that's the best part. Like the the fact that you can have a full supplement stack gives you a solution in each is like, you know, for me, I I live an active, busy lifestyle. I am on the go. I don't always, as much as I would love to be able to have a constant sleep schedule, I don't always have it. So on days where I'm going to bed later or I need to go to bed, I you know, I'll take a spritz of this sleep, right? And it's a good way for me to stay consistent despite maybe a consistent schedule. Um I'm also uh of the opinion that you shouldn't be taking a million different things and you should know what's in it. You talked about it, you know, Chris and the team did a ton of research before launching, and all of these products are really built for the active, ideal performance human being who's looking to achieve those goals. But we don't need to optimize by tracking every little detail. This does it for us, right? Like I got eight sprays and no I'm good.

SPEAKER_00

That's brilliant. No, I love it. Yeah, and I think you hit on something like performance is not just for athletes. Like, of course, we are like that is part of our lifestyle, is like, you know, moving our bodies and like being an athlete. But I think performance is just being able to show up as our best selves every single day and just kind of having that like mental clarity and focus as we go through the day. So honestly, those products have really helped, especially the the sleep. I typically do sleep a lot, but I feel like in different phases of my cycle, I definitely need the sleep like spray to like get back to sleep and getting up throughout the night and all that kind of stuff. So yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Elaborate on that though. Like I have you know, you know, 50, 75 athletes within Cook Stark Management and our team there that are going through the same thing. And there are thousands of athletes listening right now to this conversation that could benefit from a bit more of an understanding of why you would use something like this.

Women’s Cycle And Sleep Disruptions

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, so I I'd love to dive deep into that. So I think a lot of the research has been done a lot on like men. Men have a very, you know, you guys are on a 24-hour cycle. Like your testosterone is like on this like cycle where as women is a very different. We're on a 28 to 30 day cycle. And I think the expectation for women to be as performance-based, like to compare ourselves to men, is just not the reality. So I really like to look at our cycle into like two different chunks, really. Like half of the month, I'm like super, like right now, I have a lot of energy and super like motivated. But the other part of the month, like, you definitely like I use the sleep all the time because I am getting up throughout the night, whether it's, you know, I'm thinking about the next project I need to do or the next deadline, or it's just stress related, but also our hormones are working differently, right? It is normal for kind of have to have sleep disruptions, to have mood disturbances. So that's where those supplements really come into play and to really help you, you know, you can't really change your biology. You can't change the way that our hormones are going, you know, whack in and out of the month. So I think it's like really important to understand that we're on a cycle. We don't have to, you know, show up the exact same way as men do. And we do require more sleep and more, you know, energy and like fuel, especially near the end of our cycle in that luteal. So day 14 to day 28, which is like honestly half the month, which is kind of crazy. So I think it's really important to understand that, especially being a female and understanding how to use those supplements effectively.

SPEAKER_02

I've said it before, I will say it again. I am so grateful that I'm a guy. Like I would not perform the same. Um I say that. I would probably do what you're doing, and I'd be dialed in and I'd have an understanding of how to manage it, and I'd be using stuff like this because honestly, like I have enough time as it is without an additional worry on the responsibility board, put it that way. Um obviously, though, when we talk about athletes, for me, it's like I I am always trying to find that you know, cliche 1% better. You are familiar with every aspect of individual. I'm trying to reiterate to those who are listening that everyone is an athlete to some degree. Everyone can move their body, everyone in theory should be able to move and experience that motion. For someone who maybe needs that little extra bit of boost, could it be just a little bit of an additional support system to put into your routine that allows you to stack habit stack, we'll say, from atomic habits from James Fleer?

Boost Without Pre-Workout Side Effects

SPEAKER_00

That's funny you brought that up. I actually was reviewing the just like the the questions beforehand, and I was like, that's kind of how I like to look at the sprays. The can I boost is really designed to help with that like mental clarity, that mental focus, the brain fog that you can kind of get midday. So it is a great like kind of habit stack to just add on to your routine and just to kind of make you feel more alert. And there are like complexes of vitamins, so vitamin B12, B6, a bit of abiquinol, which is CoQ10, and those all really help from the cellular level without needing that extra coffee. I don't get me wrong, I love my coffee, I love my lattes, but I only stick to one a day typically, just because it can disrupt your hormones. Again, it can affect your cortisol. So I think, and there's a few athletes actually uh from you know your team, Katie, that uses she loves the can I boost as a pre-workout rather than taking pre-workout. Because pre-workout, like, don't get me wrong, I used to love it when I was like, you know, doing my CrossFit at like 5 30, but it would just jack up my heart rate and then my cortisol, like my stress hormone. Like I was just stressed all day and I was like, I don't need this. So I think it's a great way to kind of still feel focused and like clear, right? That's what we're kind of looking for, is not the jitterness of like having another energy drink. And maybe that's your cup of tea, but I think you should really consider looking at like the long-term effects of consistently using, you know, an energy drink every single day, for example, rather than the boost.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, it's scary. That's all you definitely don't want to mess with it. I am very well aware that there are prominent athletes out there who are sponsored because they're paid millions of dollars to promote that product, but they're not consuming it on a daily basis. And they know the ramifications if they do. So, with that being said, having something that is formulated for health focused first, and then these additional benefits come afterwards. You can probably even tell over the 10 minutes that's typically what Chris says it takes to absorb. My speaking has probably improved slightly over that.

Why Sublingual Sprays Work Faster

SPEAKER_02

To avoid the little extra jittery that came from the coffee, I'll probably take some fresh in a second, but why use a spray format instead of like gummies or pills, powders? Like what's what's the reasoning behind the spray? Because you've you've been behind it, right?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, for sure. So basically, our spray, it's super convenient. So it goes into the bloodstream within 15 minutes. And the reason for that is because the sublingual uh format is the second fastest way. The number one is actually just an injection, but you know, we wouldn't do that. So the second is through the oral mucosa, which is like just under your tongue, and it bypasses the stomach. So what happens when you're ingesting either a pill, a powder, or anything like that, it actually goes through your digestive system and it breaks down and your body doesn't actually fully absorb what it's taking. I think it's only 80%, like 80% of what actually is in that capsule. So the spray actually bypasses it and it goes right into your bloodstream. So that's why the sleep spray, for example, or the boost, you know, you can really feel those effects within 15, 15 minutes. Health Canada approved. So that's kind of the first thing. The second is that it's super small and convenient. So I actually use other, like I'll use magnesium, for example, but when you start stacking all of those supplements, especially if you're traveling or even if you're just in your like it's just a lot of space, right? So I think having this spray is just so convenient to either put in your purse, your gym bag, your travel, like it literally takes no room. And it's really easy to incorporate in that nighttime routine rather than having a stack. It's just a lot easier. And you can just put it at your bedside table or you know, or in your bathroom if you're taking the boost during the day or something like that. It's just a lot easier for your brain to recognize, okay, like I'm gonna take this, you know, as I'm getting ready for bed. It's like already there. So yeah, it just makes it a lot like cleaner, I guess, than having a bunch of like supplements and powders.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, and like the to-go format, I love the ease of it. You don't need a water bottle, shake it up, whatever the case may be.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I am curious, like you've seen people using these products all the time. I've obviously talked about the fact that I use the fresh specifically after my workout, before I sauna. Love to throw that in there because it lets me go an extra couple minutes in the sauna and stay calm under you know, stress.

unknown

Literally.

SPEAKER_02

I use this, the the pre-work, like this one, it is a pre-workout. It's perfect for that because again, like you said, after 12 o'clock during the day, you don't want to have any additional caffeine. So you throw some of this in a small, small amount of it, and it's like perfect. And the sleep, obviously, we've raved about it, and everyone needs to sleep. The people who are still sleeping on sleep should be crucified. I'm sorry. No, I just I kid, but it's it's serious.

SPEAKER_00

It's like the sleep is honestly it literally is the best one. I have my whole family hooked on it. Like my brother actually like asked me to get him like the six-pack.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Like, because he just uses it all the time. He just like loves it. And I think the cool thing about the sleep is that it's it's the blend of ingredients. I always kind of struggled having a nighttime routine, especially when I was like bartending before nurse, like I was a bartender when I was in nursing school and then nursing school, like it was just I was constantly under a lot of stress. And I used to use like melatonin gummies, but they were just terrible. Like I remember just like getting up and like feeling so groggy, like I was hung over and I was like, hey, like I can't be feeling this. And I just felt like there was no other like solution. So I thought it was really cool that you know, there is a solution that you can wake up and you don't feel groggy.

SPEAKER_02

So for sure. And my family's the same. I think they're constantly asking more than my friends at this point. And it's like, hey guys, come on, let's spread the love a little bit.

Quick Protein Sidebar And Discount

SPEAKER_02

No. Um speaking of friends, family. Did you see Diesel's new balanced protein? No. Oh my gosh, Rochelle. I just made milkshakes on the top of a mountain on the weekend. That's cool. Yeah, it's pretty legit. All that being said, new diesel balanced protein. It's got 23 grams. Obviously, Diesel's been the best in the business for years.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

It's got 28 grams. This is a couple less grams, but milkshake flavored and a little bit more price conscious for those folks who want to use the code AP15, save 15%, but then also save a little bit more on their protein. All I'm gonna say is let me know what you think. Rochelle, I'm gonna get you some to try. Vanilla, strawberry, or chocolate, what's your favorite flavor?

SPEAKER_00

Uh, strawberry.

unknown

Nice.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, it's on its way. I'm not gonna be able to shake it myself on the top of a mountain, but but but we'll get you some and hopefully you like it as much as I did. Wanna know, next question though.

Sleep Wins For Shift Work And Menopause

SPEAKER_02

When you look at can I wellness and the people that have been impacted by it, I think of you know, I a few years ago, Chris is talking about going down to Barstool Sports, meeting with Paul Bisonette, Biz Nasty, spitting chicklets, getting them using the products. Matt Duchesne gives it to his entire team before the playoffs every single year. Where have you seen it most impactful? What stories do you have from over the years working with the brand and seeing people firsthand?

SPEAKER_00

I love this question. I think I think for me it's been shift workers just because of my own experience. When we were at the women's show last year, there was actually someone that had seen our products because we were in Booster Juice last year. And she had come up to us and she was like, honestly, like the sleep has been such a game changer. I cannot find any other products that help me get to sleep after a 12-hour shift. And I I remember coming home and the birds are chirping at 7 a.m. And you're like, all you want to do is just sleep. But it's like, you know, it's obviously unnatural for your body to go to bed that like late or early, whatever you want to call it. But she was like, I just can't believe how amazing the product is. And I literally use it for all of my night shifts, which I thought was really special because especially coming from, you know, my nursing background and working in the hospitals for years, you know, night shifts are tough when I, you know, trying to get home and going back to bed. I think, well, that's one of the reasons I actually mostly left nursing was because of the lifestyle, because I truly believe sleep is the foundation. If you do not sleep, there is nothing in the world that will get you through the day. I don't care. You might, you know, you think you're gonna go through all these coffees, like you're gonna feel worse, you're gonna feel wired, not concentrated, but you need to sleep. Like if you're not getting sleep, and I know moms like you know, you can't sleep, but you need to find a way to sleep. Even if it's an extra 30 to an hour, it literally is your foundation. I will die on that hill. So I think that was the most impactful. People going through perimenopause, menopause, being able to get back to sleep throughout the night is just like amazing. Uh, there isn't really any product out there that you can take at two or three o'clock without feeling groggy and like you know, that you just risen from the dead in the morning. So I think that's really impactful. Yeah, just seeing people like overall like live better, healthier lives has always been a really big part of like my life, but just seeing that in other people is amazing.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I guess everyone refers to the big names, the big stories, but it's the everyday worker, it's the everyday you know, shift person who gets off their nine to five, five to nine, whatever time you were getting off, 7 a.m., but still needs to perform for their children the next morning. Ultimately, right? And you need to be able to wake up the next day. I know again, even just crossing Canada here, coming back, avoiding that jet leg time difference, like it's been nice. I know the women that were using it this past couple weeks in Calgary were all raving about the sleep, they were all raving about the fresh. I was trying to get them to use the mend more because obviously when you are exposed to a Calgary stampede, you want to take advantage of some of the festivities in Calgary.

SPEAKER_00

Totally, for sure.

Mend For Alcohol And Liver Support

SPEAKER_02

So having a product like Mend that you can take afterwards that will hopefully negate some of the negative impacts of alcohol, can you maybe elaborate on that a little bit more so that our livers can survive if we do tend to dabble in a little bit of alcohol?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, for sure. So yeah, the can I mend is I personally don't use it because I actually don't drink anymore, but it has great antioxidants that really help you recover after either a late night out or even having a couple drinks. It really just helps your liver, basically. There's choline, glycosin. I mean, these are all kind of like technical jargon that you probably don't know, but there's just antioxidants that help you recover and make you feel less icky after drinking. We're seeing also a lot of liver support with like stress and like people who aren't recovering well from like you know, training and stuff like that. The can I men can be used for that as well, which is awesome. I I I need to get back into the routine of using it, but especially my luteal, actually, in like the last few weeks or a week before my period, like just having that like extra recovery support just helps, right? Because your liver processes everything, which is pretty cool. So yeah.

SPEAKER_02

So you get set up with the stack, you get all four.

Building A Flexible Daily Routine

SPEAKER_02

How is Rochelle using it throughout the day from morning to night? What's your can I wellness stack look like?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. So for right now. Now I love to get up in the morning and have my like I usually have my coffee, so I don't really use boost until the afternoon, which I need to get back into it because I am deficient in the vitamin Bs. But then in the afternoon, I have a really hard time, especially being a high performer and like doing working on a lot of projects and being self-employed. I have a hard time shutting my brain off, to be honest. So I actually like to combine the fresh and the sleep before bed. Really gets me to like fall asleep fast and just like really, like you said, just be more calm and having that like nighttime routine. So that's kind of what my stack looks like.

SPEAKER_02

Love it.

SPEAKER_00

How about you? What is your what what are you currently?

SPEAKER_02

What's your similar similar to that? I would say, like I said, the fresh post-workout or even after a work day, like I'll come home and I can be wound up and high strung. I got a lot of stuff on the go. So it's a good way for me to even just like separate workday from after day.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

You know, when I turn my fluorescent lights off and try and start my nighttime routine, I might throw in a fresh before so that it's an hour before it when I throw on the blue light blockers. Again, it's a fluid stack for me, which is the nice part. Like I don't have to have that routine that I always have. I've got my sleep when I need it. I try not to have it every single night because I will be like your brother and I'll use it all the time. Then I'll be getting Chris up and using the code AP20 or CSM2024-7. But yeah, either way for me, yeah, similar to you. I'm using the fresh after or with my coffee as kind of like a way I use it. L theanine would be like the other supplement that I would take in lieu, but the fresh does the same thing for me. And then yeah, that that boost before workout in the afternoon is great. And even before a podcast like this, just to be a bit more alert before a big meeting, I'll throw that in. Again, combining the two. But for me, it's like because I've seen so many people use it and experience the benefits, to me, it's a no-brainer to have. And it's like a dollar per serving or whatever it breaks down to be, which is significantly less than a lot of the other stuff that we're taking out there to see a performance improvement, even when you think of that energy drink. Like that energy drink's gonna cost you know, four bucks, five bucks, whatever it is. You think about you know, you can have your entire stack of supplements for a month for the same price as what you would spend every day on those. Like, I don't know, to me, it's uh a value impact or a valuable solution to a ton of different problems that everyone's experiencing, and then you just decide which one works best for you. I will warn everyone the mend may not taste good, but you gotta do it, and you gotta suffer a little bit if you're gonna put your body through that stuff. So, some way, shape, or form.

Nervous System Regulation And What’s Next

SPEAKER_02

What tips would you have for people moving forward here now after this conversation from what you've experienced over the past few years? Obviously, Can I Wellness has seen tremendous growth. Like you said, you're in booster juice, you've got people across all sports using the products. Where do you see the brand going? How are you incorporating it into as you take on future speaking endeavors, for instance, as well, Rochelle?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I love to kind of incorporate the brands that I work with, especially Can I Wellness, into you know, events that I do. I also do cold plunge events, uh kind of like nervous system regulation in the wellness space. And I did a small intimate event last month and with all the ladies that are like perimenopause, menopause, and a lot of them do struggle with like energy or like sleep. So it's really nice to kind of include my own endeavors with the product. And it feels more authentic and natural because I do use the products, and I think that I always want to help other people build better lives. And these supplements have definitely impacted, you know, my sleep and other, you know, my energy levels and all that. So I definitely see it kind of evolving through, you know, wellness events, nervous system. Nervous system regulation is something that we're is kind of not that it's trendy, but we're talking a lot more about it. And what what we're what it really means is just being able to kind of go from the high alert to kind of calm, regulated in your body. And I can already see that you're, you know, with the fresh and you know, when with breathing, which is super simple, but a lot of people don't know how to properly breathe, you can really get into your body, right? Like we don't want to be in a state of like, uh, like all the time. Like that was, you know, you don't want to be in that high alert state all the time. It's not good for your body. And it's also not as, you know, authentic when you're just in your body and you're like, okay, like I am good. I'm well. And yeah. So that's kind of like what I kind of see the brand go. And

Where To Buy And Final Takeaways

SPEAKER_00

yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Where can people find it? Because obviously now I'm like, hey, I want to be a part of one of these wellness retreats. But you know, obviously.

SPEAKER_00

So we're available through our like can I wellness uh website online. We're available on Amazon, we're across different retailers throughout Canada. You know, Can I Sleep became the number one like sleep spray on Amazon last year in 2025, which is awesome. But yeah, I honestly just were like with search up can I wellness or can I sleep if that's like something you're interested. We're also on Instagram and TikTok. So those are kind of the places. But if you want to buy directly, it would be on our website or through Amazon.

SPEAKER_02

Don't forget to use the code AP20 at checkout, CSM20, whatever you want to use, whichever. No, it's it's cool to be able to see the growth, be a part of it, use the products myself, incorporate my feedback into what you guys are doing too. I really appreciate Chris, your entire team, Sarah, yourself for coming on the show, sharing some of your insights. We'll obviously make sure that we get more people using Can I Wellness across the world because, like you said, everyone needs to sleep. It's not just for professional athletes. There's a product that every single person can use. My grandmother uses the sleep, my brother uses the sleep. It don't matter. We all got to sleep, but yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Totally. And I think again, going back to what I stated at the beginning, like I don't, you know, performance or just becoming your best self is not just for the entrepreneur or the business owner. It is for the mom that is trying to navigate that or the athlete, like the newer athlete or even someone who has a nine to five, like you want to be able to show up as your best self and feel good in your body. At the end of the day, like wellness is should be simple and it should just be feeling good in your body, feeling regulated, feeling happy, content, you know, like it's not like this high, but it's just like, yeah, I'm good. Like life's good. Yeah. And I think Ken Eye Wellness is all about making wellness simple, easy, kind of like seamless to integrate into your routine. And that's what our supplements are for and our sprays are designed for.

SPEAKER_02

If you want can I wellness products, hit us up. Maybe we'll give away some free products. Maybe I'll deliver some to you in person during our travels. Uh, Rochelle, thank you for coming on the show. Every day is gonna look different. And don't think that you need to be like 110% every day because life happens and yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Like, I do race for fun. I do not get paid to race, and I put a lot of pressure on myself and injured my back, and it was just it was a lot. So I'm just trying to find fun within training.
