SPEAKER_00Dr. Grossman. I'm Dr. Mark Grossman, integrative medical optometrist, acupuncturist, in practice for over 45 years, and author of five books on natural eye care. And today we're going to discuss one of the most powerful nutrients that you can supplement with, and that's glutathione. That's right, glutathione is the eye's master antioxidant, crucial for protecting the lens, the retina, and the cornea from oxidative stress, free radicals, blue light damage, and can help prevent issues like cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration. Though its levels naturally drop with age, making supplementation and sulfur-rich foods such as garlic, onions, and asparagus are all important for maintaining eye clarity and function, along with exploring the role with vitamin C. Key roles in eye health. Glutathione neutralizes harmful reactive oxygen species free radicals that are generated by sunlight, screens, and protects delicate eye cells. It is in high concentrations in the lens of the eye, so it helps maintain its transparency, and declining levels are directly, that's right, directly linked to cataract formation. So if you've got the beginnings of cataracts, always do glutathione. Retinal protection. It supports retinal cells against damage, which is vital for preventing age-related macular degeneration. Detoxification. It helps detoxify the eye's fluids and maintains normal hydration in the cornea. So why do levels decline? Aging, natural production decreases with age. Environmental factors, toxins, pollutions, and UV light deplete it. Poor diet and stress can also affect glutathione. How to support glutathione? As we said, what are some of the sulfur-rich foods? Garlic, onions, eggs, asparagus, watermelon, and grapefruit. Supplements such as alpha lopoic acid, and acetylcysteine can boost production. Vitamin C is super important because it works synergistically with glutathione and it therefore enhances its antioxidant power, especially in the lens of the eye. Cataracts. Why is it related to low glutathione? Declining levels initiate protein clumping and light scattering. In glaucoma, it may help with fluid outflow in the eye. And in macular degeneration, lower levels correlate with increased oxidative damage. So in summary, glutathione is essential for preventing age-related eye diseases. Now, what are the key benefits for vision? As we said, cataracts, retinal support, glaucoma, and corneal health. What are the foods again that are helpful for it? Let's go over those. We talked about cruciferous vegetables, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, kale and cabbage, along with garlic, onions, and leeks. Protein sources, such as whey protein, eggs, fish, and chicken. Selenium rich foods, such as Brazilian, it's my number one favorite. I have three to four Brazilian nuts a day. Beef, chicken, turkey, if you get good organic ones, are good sources of selenium. Let's talk about ways to increase levels. Again, we talked about diet, we talked about supplements. You can even do IV injections. So that's another way to get glutathione into your system. And then just overall, what else could it be good for in terms of your whole body's health? Antioxidant defense, as we said. Liver detoxification helps with that. Helps your immune system by enhancing the activity of the immune cells. It's also great for the skin. It can improve skin brightness by reducing melanin production and increasing elasticity. It's used to minimize wrinkles and hyperpigmentation. It protects your mitochondria.
