Podcast Title: Ask the Brand Therapist
Episode: New Year, New Goals with Guest Jen Lafine
Host: Michelle B. Griffin
Guest: Jen Laffin, Success Coach
Michelle B. Griffin: Welcome everybody to this week's session of Ask the Brand Therapist. I'm Michelle B. Griffin, your host for today and this new year. Welcome to a new season, and it's so fitting that our guest today, Jen Lafine, joins us 10 days into the new year. I've been eagerly waiting several months to have her on the show.
Jen Laffin Thank you so much, Michelle, for having me. I'm thrilled to be here today to chat with you.
Michelle B. Griffin: You're here to help us set goals and take action, stepping out of that "comfort cave" as you call it. In my work with personal branding for women, I emphasize positioning oneself for the next big thing, especially in a new year. Before we dive deeper, Jen, could you share with our listeners what you do and who you do it for?
Jen Laffin: Absolutely, Michelle. I am Jen Lafine, a success coach. My role is to assist goal-setters in becoming goal-getters. I help people navigate the discomfort that accompanies setting big goals. This discomfort is a natural part of our growth journey, and I'm here to guide people through this process and help them reach the finish line.
Michelle B. Griffin: That's amazing, Jen. There's a strong parallel between our approaches. We both use roadmaps to guide our clients to their desired outcomes. I'd like to share my backstory. When I aimed to leave my job to fulfill my dream of owning a PR agency, I discovered the power of digital branding. But I remained stuck in a cycle of consuming content and credentials without taking action. I don't want anyone else to fall into this trap. So Jen, where should people start to overcome these challenges?
Jen Laffin: First, I want to commend you for sharing your story. It's vital for others to hear such experiences to realize they're not alone in these struggles. We all face obstacles like procrastination and the lure of comfort. I talk about the primal brain in my work. It loves familiarity and comfort, and it resists growth. It can create roadblocks like doubt and perfectionism. However, once we understand that these are just internal barriers and not real dangers, we can learn to override them and embark on our journey to success.
Michelle B. Griffin: I love your concept of the "Comfort Cave". It's about moving from comfort to growth, which is a significant theme in my work too. For instance, I discuss the "PYOT Zone" - Put Yourself Out There Zone - in my talks. We also mention in our LinkedIn branding book how people often grapple with almost 30 different fears, all of which are essentially unfounded. So, Jen, could you elaborate more on how we can take the next step despite these fears?
Jen Laffin Absolutely. It's crucial to remember that we all have the power to choose. When faced with discomfort, you can either retreat back to safety or push through it. Research shows that the discomfort of trying something challenging lasts about 90 seconds. If you can endure this brief period, you'll realize that the fear or discomfort was not as daunting as it seemed.
Michelle B. Griffin: That's a powerful insight. I can relate to that in my journey to LinkedIn. I hesitated for nine months before making my first post. When I finally did it, I realized it wasn't as bad as I had anticipated. So, Jen, you mentioned we have three key points to discuss today, with the second being about treating mistakes as data. What's the third point?
Jen Laffin: The third point is to recognize that every person experiences self-doubt and roadblocks due to our primal brain, which aims to keep us safe and comfortable. It's crucial not to compare your journey with others because everyone's path is unique. We all face challenges like imposter syndrome, confusion, and perfectionism.
Michelle B. Griffin: I've experienced those challenges, especially comparisonitis. It's important to stay true to your path and avoid getting sidetracked by others' successes. My goal for this year is to write my book "Own Your Lane", emphasizing the importance of clear and distinct positioning. Jen, you mentioned a bonus concept about doubting your doubt. Could you explain that?
Jen Laffin: Sure. Doubting your doubt involves examining the negative thoughts your mind generates. For instance, when I was developing a new offer, I wrote down all the doubts that came to my mind, like "no one will be interested" or "who are you to offer this?". I then assessed these thoughts to determine if they were true or helpful. This exercise helps in becoming an observer of your thoughts and choosing which ones to believe.
Michelle B. Griffin: That's a valuable practice. It's about feeling either friction or flow in what we do. So, Jen, as we wrap up, could you give our listeners one actionable tip or takeaway to move forward with their goals?
Jen Laffin Certainly. I recommend goal journaling. It's a quick process where you list your goals, the feelings you want to associate with them, and one action step to take each day. Doing this daily keeps your goals top of mind and ensures you're actively working towards them. I offer a goal journaling PDF on my website for anyone interested.
Michelle B. Griffin: Fantastic! We'll link that in the show notes. Jen, how can people find and follow you?
Jen Laffin You can visit my website at www.jenlaffine.com (spelled L-A-F-F-I-N) and connect with me on LinkedIn, where I share lots of content. I'm also the founder of the Goal Getter Club, a community offering support and accountability.
Michelle B. Griffin: Thank you, Jen, for sharing your insights and helping me with my goal to write my solo book. I'm excited to announce that I'm partnering with someone for an accountability book project. It's important to set deadlines and make your goals public. Until next week, keep putting yourself out there, building your brand, sharing your message, and impacting others. Take care.
