Michelle B. Griffin: Welcome back everybody to another episode. I'm your host, Michelle B. Griffin, and this is the Standout Women Show. Today, I'm really excited to have another standout women's spotlight series and thrilled to welcome to the show Shari Biery.
Shari Biery: Thanks for having me, Michelle. It's so great to be with you.
Michelle B. Griffin: And fun fact, Shari and I live in the same town. Well, not for long. She's going to be moving, but we live in the same town, Pensacola, Florida city, I should say. So we actually, when we worked together, we did it in person, which was such a treat and just lit me up. But before we get into that, can you please share who you are, what you do, who you help, and then we're going to dive in.
Shari Biery: Yeah, thanks for having me. It's been so great to work with you. I am a purpose and wellbeing coach who helps midlife women who support high achieving spouses reclaim their identity. Because they're so busy in their lives taking care of everybody else but themselves, that they tend to lose sight of their own needs. I was one of them and I still am one of those women who are always focused on taking care of everybody else.
Going on my journey, when my husband handed me the American flag at his military retirement ceremony, he was so sweet. He knew what I was struggling with. I was having this identity crisis and purpose confusion. I didn't know what I wanted to be when I grew up because I had done so many different things as a military spouse, supporting him. He's a physician as well, so I was supporting his goals and dreams while mine took a back seat.
When he handed me that American flag, he gave me a kiss and said, "It's your turn." When he said those beautiful words, I realized I needed to give myself permission. And now I help women do that. It's just been an amazing journey being a nationally board-certified health and wellness coach and seeing how holistically every area of our lives affects our wellbeing. It really pulled me towards helping women who were giving so much to others and neglecting themselves. That’s how I became really clear on who my client was. We serve the best those we once were, just a few steps ahead of them.
Michelle B. Griffin: So you became this health and wellness certified coach, among the first out there. Flash forward five years later, there are about 12,000 plus, which brings us to the conversation today. You were doing what you love, found your way, had clients, and were evolving. At some point, you realized you were a little broad and needed to better yourself. Walk us through how you felt, what were the signs, and when you knew it was time to move on up.
Shari Biery: As a nationally board-certified health and wellness coach, I was speaking broadly to a lot of different people, and it was hard to identify who my person was. You want to know someone who’s lived that life, who has gone through something very similar, so you can relate to one another. I did a number of marketing courses and different masterminds focused on business growth. I really nailed down who my ideal client was and developed my process, the CALM method, that I coach women through. What I really needed help with was tying everything together. I not only have my business, but I also wrote a book that will be published in the fall. I needed help to speak to that woman effectively.
That's when I leaned into our relationship. We were both co-speakers at a conference when we met, and after having lunch, I had this big aha moment: Michelle, I need to hire you. You're the one. This beautiful collaboration has been so helpful in getting the clarity of what my message needed to be. People are now seeing what I do, which is super helpful. Specificity sells, and clarity compels. Those are the two things I love to say. You had everything on paper, it was just about putting it together and powerfully positioning for higher-level opportunities.
Michelle B. Griffin: I remember when we met a couple of years ago and had lunch around December of last year. In March, you had that aha moment. Between those three months, you finished your book. Writing a book is an open-heart surgery experience. It opens you up to everything. I'm assuming that process made you realize or think about going higher. Many of my clients are in some process of writing a book and want to align and position who they are to tie it in so it makes sense.
Shari Biery: Yes, writing the book made me realize who I am and what I want to convey. The themes that kept coming up were the woman with the helium hand, the invisible load, and the sacrifice syndrome. When I started saying, "Who is that woman?" it was a military spouse, a spouse of a CEO, a physician, a pilot, a chaplain, even a farmer. That's when the clarity started to come. I support midlife women who help support their high-achieving spouses. And they are high-achieving too. Getting clarity on that helped me speak to a smaller, specific group.
Michelle B. Griffin: Specificity sells and clarity compels. You had everything on paper; it was about powerfully positioning for higher-level opportunities. You’ve nailed your message. Now let's talk about some of the work we did to really uncover that.
Shari Biery: We worked on defining my ideal client and refining my message. We narrowed it down from broad to a very narrow lane, leading with one core signature offer. It gave me peace of mind. I can tell someone my anchor point now: purpose and wellbeing, with the flag in the ground for high-achieving spouses. It's so much easier to communicate. I have my foundational stuff set, which makes working with my team more efficient and saves time and money.
Michelle B. Griffin: Yes, getting that foundation set is crucial. Now you have complete clarity in who you are, how you communicate, and where you're going. Let’s talk about the book. What’s coming up for you?
Shari Biery: We’re looking at a launch in mid-September. I’m doing podcasts, speaking in groups, and collaborating with a fellow military spouse on merchandise. We have "It's Your Turn" bracelets, and I plan to do book tours and readings across the country. The rest of the year is ironed out. We worked on my thought leadership themes, PR pillars, and story angles. The book is an anchor point in my ecosystem, and I'm excited about in-person retreats, a podcast, and other ways to reach my clients.
Michelle B. Griffin: That's fantastic. You have an evergreen legacy piece that will continue to thrive. Armed with a book, speaking PR toolkit, and foundations, you are unstoppable. Every client I work with feels alive and empowered, owning their lane. What’s one piece of advice for those feeling held back or ready to move forward?
Shari Biery: There is no time like the present. Procrastination slows us down. The phrase I use was, "I'll do it when," but when is now. Surround yourself with support, find that person or accountability buddy. Believe in the possibilities. Anything is possible if you believe.
Michelle B. Griffin: Beautifully said. Where's the best place for people to connect with you?
Shari Biery: My website, after doing this work together, is sharibiery.com. Thank you, Michelle, for all your help and support.
Michelle B. Griffin: It's been an honor to work with you. We’ll update the links to your book and everything as it comes out. Another amazing episode, another woman standing out in her unique brilliance, owning her lane. I’ll be back with more wisdom to help you own your lane. Until then, keep putting yourself out there. You have a brand to build, a message to share, and people to impact. Catch you next time. Take care.
